* ThrowItIn: That whole storyline about buying stuff for Gyopi all started with what might have been either an artistic shortcut or [[ArtisticLicenseAnimalCare simply assuming that water and rocks are a sufficient environment for fish to live in]]. To start with, the author had Kagami give a few simple instructions to Inori and Matsuri on how to take care of it, simply because it was already canon. His main beta-reader explained more that there is to it (as well as assuming it lived in a bowl or tank, due to a lack of familiarity of the show). He then showed his beta a certain scene from the anime's 15th episode, to which she replied how insufficient a habitat it is.

* AccidentallyCorrectWriting: There are rare variants of the Poptop and Adult Poptop called the Albino Poptop and Albino Adult Poptop. Strangely, they are mostly cream and only white on their undersides, rather than being white all over. But there are many different variants of albinism, some of which only cause a partial loss of pigment and so result in blonde or brown hair. This means that is actually plausible for the Poptops to have this colouring.
* ApprovalOfGod: The devs at Chucklefish must've listened to and loved Music/DanBull's [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyfkNzOd-OI Starbound song]], because its instrumental would later be added into the game -- you can listen to it through the club speakers in Hylotl underwater cities, located on ocean planets.
* DevelopmentGag: Though the beta is long over, some references to it remain:
** Among the junk in Penguin Pete's shipyard is the booster of the original Hylotl ship design from before ship upgrades were added.
** Dreadwing's codex entry mentions that he used to attack people who are using distress beacons, but gave up after he kept getting shot down.
** According to the fish collection, the Imperviray has skin made of Impervium.
* DummiedOut: [[http://starbounder.org/Category:Removed A lot of content has been purged from the game]], especially by the Cheerful Giraffe update, which completely revamped a number of systems. Some of them include:
** Greenfinger of the Floran does not exist post-1.0, and the name 'Greenfinger' is instead used to refer to a caste of Floran wise men gifted with technology. If you find the Floran sandstone statue, a Floran protagonist will say that it depicts Greenfinger.
** Fatal Circuit was the game's second boss, but it was replaced. You can still attempt to spawn it, but the Shockhopper MKI will appear in its place.
* {{Homage}}: The Apex themselves are nothing but a giant homage to both ''Literature/NineteenEightyFour'' and ''Franchise/PlanetOfTheApes''. It's as creepy as it sounds.
* OfficialFanSubmittedContent: The Poptop enemy was the winning entry in a contest to design a monster for the game. The entry itself is [[http://community.playstarbound.com/threads/the-poptop-educational-pamphlet.3407/ here]].
* PreOrderBonus: In order to help get extra funds to speed development along, Chucklefish set up one of the most elaborate digital examples of one to date. Apart from Kickstarter-esque stretch goals (two of which were reached within a week), the more expensive preorder packages came with different perks:
** Pixel Tier ($15): The game on release, a beta invite, and the soundtrack.
** Silver Tier ($20): Same as Pixel, plus a forum badge.
** Gold Tier ($45): Same as Silver, plus the donor's name appears in the NPC name pool.
** Diamond Tier ($75): Same as Gold, plus the donor's name appears in the game credits.
** Platinum Tier ($500): Same as Diamond, plus the ability to design a hat to be included to the game.
** Solarium Tier ($1000): Same as Diamond, plus to ability to help design a gun to be included in the game.
** Impervium Tier ($2000): Same as Diamond, plus the donor gets immortalized as an in-game statue for players to build.
* ScheduleSlip: The game was originally scheduled for a summer 2013, but missed the deadline. The development team then gave a rough estimate as to the release date of their game for "when it's done". Thankfully, those who pre-ordered were guaranteed beta access by the end of the year. [[http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/addressing-beta-questions.33566/ The beta release was announced for December 4th.]] Unfortunately, stable updates were abandoned after February 18, 2014, with the team resorting to unstable updates, then giving up on those and releasing only nightly builds that they warned "might crash your system and kill your dog".
* TrollingCreator: The devs are prone to trolling the fanbase, such as showcasing the fake Glitch AI (a busty woman with a horse's head) which was later replaced with a wizard Glitch. The horse head was later used for the Novakid AI, minus the woman's body. This has resulted in heavily mixed reactions, with most players either being amused or rolling with the jokes, but a rather vocal segment of the player base will usually voice their displeasure when they believe a joke either was in bad taste or has overstayed its welcome, such as the aforementioned Novakid AI incident.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** It was originally planned for each character to use space stations as their main base, however that idea had given way to a single, personal spaceship for each player that has all they need in terms of advanced space travel and advanced item crafting. In version 1.3 the game finally allowed you to build space stations in addition to your own ship, but it starts out fairly small, and expanding it in any fashion takes a lot of resources.
** Originally each race was going to have their own separate introduction mission, instead of the shared prologue on Earth in the final game. What's more, each introduction was given a voiceover by [[VideoGame/{{Bastion}} Logan Cunningham]], but they never made it in to the game.
** The [[MushroomMan agarians]] were originally written to be an antagonistic race of parasitic fungi that [[ParasiteZombie infest and mutate other living creatures]], but in the final game the agarians are [[DemotedToExtra a harmless and irrelevant NPC race]], with only a few DummiedOut props alluding to their original concept.
