1	* CompletelyDifferentTitle: The original American arcade release was called ''Sonic Championship''. This apparently didn't stick, as both the ''Gems Collection'' and HD re-releases used the original Japanese title.
2	* CutSong:
3	** The theme for the unused Sunset Town arena goes unheard.
4	** No version of the game uses the proper theme for the Death Egg Hangar arena. The original Arcade version has no music, while all others use the Sonic vs. Knuckles theme.
5	* DummiedOut:
6	** Honey the Cat, Metal Sonic, one of the Eggman robots (which has the name of "[=RoboEgg=]"), the "rocket" Metal Sonic from the intro (who even has his own unique name card), and Dr. Eggman[[note]]in various forms - normal and big on-foot à la [[VideoGame/FightingVipers Mahler and B.M.]], in his copy UFO, and presumably a tank of which only the treads are finished[[/note]] are all playable through hacking. Honey the Cat and Metal Sonic were made playable in the HD re-release, along with Dr. Eggman in his [[PoweredArmor E-Mech]], though the other characters remained left out.
7	** There's also a dummied out stage, Sunset Town; all that remains in the game's data is its music, which is included in the SoundTest and the official soundtrack. Apparently, this was meant to be Honey's home stage.
8	** There's leftovers of unused attacks and objects, including a charmed/lovestruck move and a VideoGame/{{Pengo}} cameo.
9	* FirstAppearance: Of [[MadBomber Bean the Dynamite,]] [[MightyGlacier Bark the Polar Bear,]] and [[GuestFighter Honey the Cat.]]
10	* KeepCirculatingTheTapes: Due to the cancellation of the Saturn port, as explained under WhatCouldHaveBeen below, the game didn't get any re-releases until the ''Gems Collection'' port.
11	* LateExportForYou: The game only received a very limited overseas release prior to its port in ''[[CompilationRerelease Sonic Gems Collection]]''. This changed though after [=Model2=] Collection's re-release on Platform/XboxLiveArcade and Platform/{{PlayStation Network}}.
12	* ThrowItIn: The game was ''conceived'' through this; the character designer for ''VideoGame/FightingVipers'' put Sonic and Tails in the game as a joke. When producer Yu Suzuki saw it, he loved it, and with Yuji Naka's blessing, he proposed the idea of a fully ''Sonic''-themed fighting game to [=AM2=] head Hiroshi Kataoka. According to [[https://web.archive.org/web/20070927211322/http://www.1up.com/do/feature?pager.offset=1&cId=3149135 an interview]] with Kataoka, he believes this is also why Honey the Cat was included as an unused character; it was the same character designer messing around and putting her in without anyone else knowing.
13	* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
14	** There is a scrapped character called [[GuestFighter Honey the Cat]] (an anthropomorphic version of Honey/Candy from ''VideoGame/FightingVipers'') as well as a full playable moveset for Dr. Robotnik that [[DummiedOut can both be found within the game's code]]. Furthermore, Rocket Metal Sonic, seen in the opening, was supposed to be playable too. This was later changed, as the Xbox Live Arcade and [=PlayStation=] Network re-release of the game features Metal Sonic, Dr. Eggman in his [[PoweredArmor mecha-armor]], and Honey the Cat as officially playable characters without the need of hacking. However, the other dummied out characters like Rocket Metal Sonic unfortunately remain unplayable. Dr. Eggman in particular deserves further elaboration: There are actually ''four'' variations of the doctor in the game: The version seen in-game, a variation with a more elaborate mecha-suit of which only assets remain, and two versions of him fighting without the armor, one of which is bigger than the other (presumably as a reference to the ''Fighting Vipers'' final boss). It's unclear to tell if the original idea was to have separate playable and boss versions of Robotnik or if something else was planned.
15	** There is a hidden song named "Sunset Town," which apparently was supposed to be a stage in the original game, possibly for Honey the Cat. However, there are no models for the scrapped arena.
16	** According to Hiroshi Kataoka, the new power-type character was originally conceived as an orangutan before being passed over in favor of a polar bear who lives in Russia named Bark. Bark also had several design iterations over the course of development, and the Russian aspect was dropped.
17	** The game was originally planned to get a Platform/SegaSaturn port. However, difficulties with the hardware prevented the port from happening.
