* ActingForTwo:
** Creator/ToshiyukiMorikawa voices both Kimimaro as well as Minato Namikaze.
** Creator/NaoyaUchida voices both Tobi (in his gruff voice) and the real Madara Uchiha.
** Keiko Nemoto voices Shizune and provides the vocal effects for the pig Tonton. It's the same in English with Creator/MeganHollingshead doing them both.
** Creator/NobuoTobita played Ebisu and both Zetsus.
* ActorExistenceLimbo: After the death of Creator/TomoyukiDan in October 2013, Kisame (whose death scene had already aired in the anime at that point) was essentially written out of the series, receiving no (filler) scenes that would require new dialogue recordings (and thus necessitate [[TheOtherDarrin the casting of a new voice actor]]). Any voiced appearances he did get, such as appearing in video games, would reuse existing recordings.
* AdoredByTheNetwork: After the show premiered on Creator/{{Toonami}} and became popular, Creator/CartoonNetwork aired ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' episodes ad nauseam. It was even on the page image for a time.
** It's popularity on Cartoon Network was so great that, for a time, the network aired reruns of the show even when Toonami wasn't on, alongside their Cartoon Cartoon shows. A rarity for most other anime running on Toonami.
** By the end of the original Toonami, it was one of '''three''' shows airing on the block and the only one that ''wasn't'' a rerun.
** On the revived Toonami on Creator/AdultSwim, the original ''Naruto'' was given uncut reruns starting in late 2012. Not much of a problem. In late 2013, it was announced that the show would be leaving and its sequel show, ''Naruto Shippuden'', would be taking its place. However, when the production crew behind Toonami revealed the January 4th lineup, it turns out that not only would ''Shippuden'' be airing, but the original would stay, rerunning the first 52 episodes at a later timeslot[[note]]the production crew stated that this is because Viz gave them a choice of either continuing the original ''Naruto'', or picking up ''Shippuden'' and rerunning the original ''Naruto''[[/note]].
* BeamMeUpScotty: Tobi didn't say "Tobi is a good boy," Zetsu did. As well, a translation error by Sleepy Fans has Sasuke claiming that he wants to kill '''all five Kages''', instead of just Danzo.
** Made HilariousInHindsight and AscendedFanon when Sasuke really '''''does''''' say that in Chapter 692.
** The actual line Itachi says when asked by Sasuke about slaughtering the entire Uchiha clan is "to test the limits of my abilities", '''not''' "[[MemeticMutation To measure my abilities.]]"
* CashCowFranchise: There's just something about {{ninja}}s that managed to get this manga to sell over 200 million copies and become the third best selling manga of all time. With 700 chapters, an anime with nearly 700 episodes in total counting Part 1 and Shippuden, 11 movies, several [=OVA=]s and video games, a spin-off manga, a play, several novels, and a SpinOffspring [[Manga/{{Boruto}} anime]], ''Naruto'' really has proven its popularity as a cash cow.
* CastingGag: Naruto is voiced by Creator/JunkoTakeuchi, and the BigBad of the series, [[spoiler:Obito]], was voiced by Creator/MegumiHan as a child. Both voice actresses provided the voice for [[Manga/HunterXHunter Gon Freecss]] (in the 1999 and 2011 anime adaptations respectively).
* CreatorBacklash: Kishimoto admitted in [[https://web.archive.org/web/20170131084216/http://www.saiyanisland.com/2017/01/naruto-creator-masashi-kishimoto-2017-interview/ this 2017 Jump Festa interview]] that he regrets adding "the messy LoveTriangle" between Hinata/Naruto/Sakura because 1) Naruto is a battle manga, not a romance story, and 2) despite the {{Red Herring}}s that he deliberately placed throughout the manga to [[TrollingCreator mess with the Naruto/Sakura shippers]], he explicitly stated that there was ''nothing'' set in his mind '''at all''' about Naruto and Sakura becoming a couple, and he later reiterated that he '''never''' thought about making them a couple because they were going to be [[LikeBrotherAndSister just friends]] and [[TrueCompanions teammates]]; it was all about Naruto and Hinata [[OfficialCouple getting married]] since the early stages of the manga.
* CreatorsFavorite: At approximately 25:00 of [[https://web.archive.org/web/20170124225549/http://www.viz.com:80/blog/posts/sj-podcast-kishimoto-sensei-special this 2015 Viz Shonen Jump podcast]], Creator/MasashiKishimoto reveals that his favorite female character is Hinata, because "[[NiceGirl she's not violent at all]]."
* CreatorsPest: Creator/MasashiKishimoto dislikes Sakura just as much as [[TheScrappy the majority of the fandom does]]:
** In [[https://web.archive.org/web/20141021073730/https://narutochapter.wordpress.com/2010/02/06/interview-masashi-kishimoto-jump-festa-2010/ this 2010 Jump Festa interview]], Kishimoto admits that Sakura [[FauxActionGirl hasn't been much of a heroine]] by that point, and that there is ''no way'' she would become Hokage before Naruto. He also confesses that he intentionally made Sakura "detestable" for giving Naruto her [[NeverLiveItDown infamous]] [[FalseConfession fake love confession]] in [[ShipSinking Chapter 469]]:
--->'''Sakura's Voice Actress:''' With the latest developments, Sakura has...\
'''Kishimoto:''' That chick is detestable for [[ManipulativeBitch using Naruto's good will]], but, well that's just how I'd think to write a realistic girl. You hear all the time that Sakura is a detestable person, but that's what seems to be the intention.
** In [[https://web.archive.org/web/20180330022613/https://imgur.com/a/4Fouv this 2014 Jump Festa interview]], Kishimoto reveals that Sakura was included in the narrative because of ExecutiveMeddling. He admits that he didn't plan on creating her because he's not good with female characters.
** In [[https://web.archive.org/web/20170924111946/http://naruto.wikia.com/wiki/Thread:164031 this 2014 Fuji TV Kobayashi interview]], Kishimoto reveals that he thought Sakura would appeal to female fans, but he was surprised when she actually became hated. He acknowledges that a lot of people, including young girls, hate Sakura, and it's gotten to the point where he now continues on regretting her character as well. He also explains that the reason why [[CanonForeigner Sakura's parents have never appeared in any canon work]] is specifically ''because'' of her haters--Sakura is ''that'' unpopular that even if he expanded on her character by making her parents canon, she would still be hated and both she and her parents would be on the sidelines anyways, so he saw no point in canonizing them. As time went on, it was too late for Kishimoto to drop Sakura, so he tried to increase her popularity by making her more physically beautiful [[SatelliteCharacter without changing her characterization]], but in the end it had no effect because no one noticed. Finally, he states that Sakura was "always a pain to draw."
** In the aforementioned 2015 Viz Shonen Jump podcast, Kishimoto states that Sakura is ''not'' his favorite female character, because she's [[HairTriggerTemper really violent]] and "[[HotBlooded kind of a hard woman]]."
* CrossDressingVoices:
** Naruto is voiced by females in both Japanese and English, emphasizing his quirkiness and immaturity.
*** And in the Latin American dub, he shares his voice actress with [[WesternAnimation/Ben10 Young!Ben Tennyson]].
** Orochimaru is surprisingly voiced by a woman in Japanese. One has to wonder how her voice is so hoarse.
* TheDanza: In the Japanese dub, Shiho's voice actress is Shiho Hisajima.
** Barely subverted in the anime-only Land of Birds arc by the main villain Hōki. He is voiced in his councilman guise Mōsō by Katsuhisa '''Hōki''' but his true form was voiced by Creator/KojiTotani.
* {{Defictionalization}}: There's a [[https://www.facebook.com/Organisasiakatsukiafkar/ charity group called Akatsuki Afkar]] in Indonesia, whose members do charity work wearing Akatsuki gear.
* DevelopmentHell: Creator/{{Lionsgate}} has had the rights to a live-action adaptation since 2015 and even a director in Michael Gracey, but no production has begun. Part of this is [[https://twitter.com/anime/status/979712363560669187?s=21 because Gracey has went on record]] that he refuses to begin production on a script unless [[ApprovalOfGod Kishimoto approves it]]. As of February 2024, Gracey is no longer involved, with Creator/DestinDanielCretton being hired to direct the movie and cowrite its script.
* DirectedByCastMember:
** Creator/LiamOBrien worked on the English dub of ''Naruto'' as a writer and voice director while voicing Gaara.
** The French dub of the original series was initially directed by Jean-Pierre Denuit, who also pulled double duty by voicing Shikamaru, Rock Lee, and several minor characters. Starting with the 157th episode, Julie Basecqz replaced him as the dub's director, leading her to direct the dub for all subsequent ''Naruto'' series and all 11 movies. Basecqz also voiced several characters such as Chiyo, Konan, and Mei Terumi to name a few.
* ExecutiveMeddling: Creator Creator/MasashiKishimoto shares several stories about editors and executive meddling in [[https://web.archive.org/web/20170924111946/http://naruto.wikia.com/wiki/Thread:164031 this 2014 Fuji TV Kobayashi interview]]:
** Kishimoto explains that the Chunin exam was mandated by his editor because introducing each of the teams one-by-one would take too long. His editing team also told him to disrupt the tournament with Orochimaru, the villain that became the threat for many years.
** Kishimoto shares that the anime team forced him to create Sakura's LoveLetter scene in Chapters 539 and 540 so that they could create a {{filler}} arc from it. No such filler arc came to fruition in the end. Kishimoto admits that since he didn't know what to write, given his own admission that he's terrible at writing romance, he had to put something to appease the anime team, so he halfheartedly created the scene.
* GodNeverSaidThat: As a long-running very popular series it was prone to this:
** Creator/MasashiKishimoto is often mentioned as having said that Sasuke is his favorite character, particularly by people who think he's a CreatorsPet with [[SpotlightStealingSquad too much screentime]]. He actually said Sasuke is his favorite character... ''to draw''.
** During mid-2014, persistent rumors circulated about how Kishimoto had stated that the manga would end in 2014; in truth, he did say that the manga was nearing completion and was in its final arc, but didn't put forward a concrete deadline. This is a very peculiar example in that the manga ''did'' end in 2014 after all, so anyone who believed the rumor was RightForTheWrongReasons.
** Due to the series' ongoing {{Romance Arc}}s, several interviews were scrutinized heavily by those in the fandom, the most popular being that the OfficialCouple got together due to ExecutiveMeddling; the truth, however, is that the OfficialCouple got together in the usual way that fictional couples do -- because the author already decided who they would be at an early stage.
** Kishimoto's involvement with the production of the [[NonSerialMovie non-canon]] movie ''Anime/NarutoTheMovieRoadToNinja'', which is heavily loaded with Naruto/Sakura ShipTeasing, made a lot of their {{shipping}} fans to claim that the author was giving an explicit endorsement of the pairing and that it was meant to be the official one; in reality, Kishimoto was only involved with the characters' designs and story draft, while the actual script of the movie was done by Yuka Miyata, who was infamous for her Naruto/Sakura-teasing [[ArmedWithCanon additions]] to the anime via {{filler}}.
** When the series was reaching its end, quite a few fans claimed that Kishimoto had confirmed that in the ending Naruto would have a son named Shinachiku, based on an interview made during the promotion of the aforementioned ''Road to Ninja'' movie; in reality during the interview Kishimoto when asked if Naruto would have a child how would he call him, he ''jokingly'' answered that ''probably'' Shinachiku. The real names for Naruto's children turned out to be [[spoiler:Boruto and Himawari]].
** A few of their shippers claimed that Kishimoto had confirmed in an interview that Naruto and Sakura's relationship was based upon his and his wife's; in reality during the [[https://web.archive.org/web/20151015033145/https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interview/2015-10-14/masashi-kishimoto-at-new-york-comic-con/.94186 interview]] when asked if his relationship was more similar to Naruto/Hinata than Sasuke/Sakura, he answers "it might not actually be like either", then when comparing Hinata to his wife he describes the latter as "strong", then it's ''the interviewer'' who suggests that Sakura could be more similar to Kishi's wife personality-wise (Naruto's relationship and dynamics with Sakura were not even mentioned).
** Some fans claimed that Kishimoto wanted to [[ContinuityReboot reboot]] the series after he finished it. In reality, according to [[https://web.archive.org/web/20180616153940/http://www.spirallingsphere.com/2016/07/masashi-kishimoto-x-ikemoto-full-interview-english/ this 2016 Jump Festa interview]], the one who actually said that was his assistant, Mikio Ikemoto. Kishimoto has consistently said that he's happy with ''Naruto'' and the way he finished it, and Ikemoto stated that he loved the idea of making a sequel rather than a reboot, so after [[ApprovalOfGod Kishimoto endorsed him to Shueisha]], he began writing the ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'' manga under Kishimoto's supervision.
* InspirationForTheWork: Like many Shonen Mangaka, ''Manga/DragonBall'' was a big influence. Naruto's [[HighlyVisibleNinja outfit]] was even created as a ShoutOut to Goku's Iconic Gi. Kishimoto has mentioned in interviews that the works of Creator/YoshihiroTogashi, ''Manga/YuYuHakusho'' and ''Manga/HunterXHunter'', were also major influences on his plot.
* NoExportForYou:
** The first and fourth O[=V=]As of the original anime have never seen an official release in America.
** Most countries in central and eastern Europe did not receive ''Shippuden'' due to Disney deciding to drop the series from their international Jetix feeds, most likely because of the show becoming increasingly violent over time.[[note]]Ironically, they would later pick up ''Shippuden'' for broadcasting on Disney XD, the successor to Jetix [[/note]] However, Russia did receive a voice-over translation on 2x2.
** ''Narutimate Accel 2'', what would have been known as ''Ultimate Ninja 5'', has been confirmed to be out in the UK, but will not be coming out in the USA (or so says tens of thousands of forum-ers and a semi-official statement, versus a scant few hundred clinging to false hope).
** Because of the "Quality" of their edits in the first few seasons, Jetix UK never did air the later Seasons of Naruto or anything of Naruto Shippuden.
* NonSingingVoice: In the Hoshigakure filler arc, Natsuhi's singing was done by Creator/MaryElizabethMcGlynn instead of her regular actress Kirsten Potter.
* PlayingAgainstType:
** Creator/YuriLowenthal traditionally voices some form of the KidHero - Sasuke is pretty much the exact opposite of that.
** Creator/NolanNorth traditionally voices TheHero - in ''Ultimate Ninja Storm 2'', he voices the villainous Tobi.
** At the time, Creator/SteveBlum as Orochimaru was this.
** In the Mexican Spanish dub, Besides voicing Hayate Gekko, Creator/IrwinDaayan also voices ''Kurama'' of all characters. Keep in mind in Mexico, he's normally type-casted on voicing [[{{Bishonen}} pretty boys]] or HotBlooded heroes, and while not the first time voicing characters with deep voices (like [[Anime/SamuraiChamploo Mugen]] or [[Anime/BlueSubmarineNo6 Tetsu Hayami]]), maybe it's one the few times he voiced a villainous role, [[spoiler:[[HeelFaceTurn at first]]]].
** In Latin-America, Tayuya is voiced by Sakura. [[Manga/CardcaptorSakura The REALLY famous one.]]
* PromotedFanboy: Key animator Chengxi Huang revealed in [[https://web.archive.org/web/20170417194504/https://wavemotioncannon.com/2017/04/16/interview-with-naruto-animator-chengxi-huang-part-12/ this 2017 Wave Motion Cannon interview]] that he's been a fan of ''Naruto'' since he was in middle school, and he was happy to become a part of the anime team in 2014, beginning with his inaugural 2nd Key Animation work for Neji's death scene in ''Shippuden'' Episode 364. [[https://web.archive.org/web/20171107032713/https://wavemotioncannon.com/2017/08/08/interview-with-naruto-animator-chengxi-huang-part-22/ He also revealed]] that he wanted Naruto and Hinata to become a couple since the Chunin Exams arc in Part I, and he was happy when they became an OfficialCouple in the manga's epilogue.
* RecastAsARegular: Creator/WataruTakagi was first heard as Iruka's Rain ninja disguise in a filler section of the Chūnin Exams long before he would become the voice of Tobi in ''Shippūden''. Creator/NaoyaUchida also voiced Suien in the Waterfall Village OVA before being cast as Tobi's Madara Uchiha voice plus the actual Madara.
** Creator/KenyuuHoriuchi appeared briefly as Tobirama Senju, the Second Hokage, in Part I before he became equally recognizable as Pain in Part II. Things became full circle when Tobirama came back again in a bigger role long after Pain's death in the anime.
*** Plus Nagato's main body's actor, Junpei Morita, was previously Hōki in the Ultimate Weapon filler arc; the final of the pre-''Shippūden'' fillers.
** Yutaka Aoyama was the voice of the Elder Moya Brother in the infamous "Kakashi's True Face" filler before being cast in the role of Sasori's Hiruko guise.
** Both Creator/MasakiTerasoma and Katsuhiko Kawamoto, Hidan and Deidara respectively, were the voices of [[FillerVillain Renga and Ruiga]] from the Land of Vegetables filler arc beforehand. Jiga's actor, Tadahisa Saizen, also voiced Kagerō's male guise and Tsurugi before being cast as Ao.
** Creator/NobuoTobita appeared as Ebisu in only the second episode of the anime before being cast as both Black and White Zetsu.
** All of Taka's actors appeared in inconsequential roles before being appearing as their respective characters:
*** Creator/TakashiKondo voiced Sai's late brother Shin, plus a ninja chef and a samurai bodyguard in Part I fillers, before Suigetsu.
*** Kanako Tojō was the initial voice for sand kunoichi Maki and several others in early ''Shippūden'' before voicing Karin. Karin's second actress, Creator/ToaYukinari, also voiced Akane and Nagato's mom Fusō before she replaced Tojō.
*** Shuhei Sakaguchi was the voice of StraightMan Kiyoyasu Kagetsu in "Laughing Shino" before voicing Jūgo.
** Sai's actor Creator/SatoshiHino briefly appeared as filler character Akio in the Shinobazu arc late into Part I. Also, Creator/RikiyaKoyama earlier appeared in the Star Village filler arc as Hotarubi before being cast as Yamato.
** Keiko Nemoto first appeared as lady ANBU Yūgao Uzuki before becoming better known as Shizune's voice.
** Creator/HisaoEgawa previously played Fukusuke Hikyakuya in the Land of Tea filler, plus Kongō in the third movie, before voicing the one and only Killer Bee in ''Shippūden''. Gyūki's actor, Masaki Aizawa, also appeared earlier in the Land of Rice Fields arc as ninja-turned-gangster Hanzaki Fūma.
** Subverted with Akiko Koike, who first voiced Kin Tsuchi before replacing Creator/IkueOtani as Konohamaru in the opening arc of ''Shippūden''. When Konohamaru returned later on, however, Otani resumed the role for the remainder of the show.
** Creator/ToshiyukiMorikawa previously voiced Kimimaro in the Sasuke Retrieval arc before becoming the voice of the Fourth Hokage himself, Minato Namikaze.
** Misumi Tsurugi's actor from the Chūnin Exams, Kunihiro Kawamoto, returned later in ''Shippūden'' as [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} Cloud ninja cuckoolander]] Omoi. Darui's actor Ryota Takeuchi also voiced a Leaf ANBU in the Three-Tails filler arc.
** Creator/TomomichiNishimura voiced minor character Hachidai in the Curry of Life filler arc before becoming Ōnoki, the Third Tsuchikage's, voice. His bodyguard Akatsuchi's voice, Creator/KentaMiyake, previously voiced Jirōbō of the Sound Ninja Four.
** Katsumi Cho voiced an elder of the Hyūga clan in Part I and would later voice the Land of Iron's general Mifune in ''Shippūden''.
** Creator/KenjiroTsuda appeared in a late filler episode as all-around jerkass Shin'emon during Part I before being cast definitively as Aoba Yamashiro in ''Shippūden''.[[note]]Aoba was originally voiced by [[Creator/HideoIshikawa Itachi]] and [[Creator/HiroshiTsuchida Raidō's]] actors in his Part I cameos.[[/note]]
** Long before voicing [[TheDanza Shiho]], Shiho Hisajima provided the voice of Uroko Kurama in the Kurama Clan filler arc from Part I.
** Ikuo Nishikawa first appeared in ''Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow'' as Sandayu Asada, and later as an elderly miner Sukeza in the Curry of Life filler arc, before being cast as frog sage Fukasaku. Creator/YojiUeda was the voice of Rain genin Mubi before he played Gamakichi and Creator/AtsushiOno appeared as Gozu in the Three-Tails arc plus some extras in earlier episodes before voicing Gamaken. Gamamaru's actor, Mitsuo Senda, had previously voiced a villain, Shinayakana, in a standalone filler in Part I.
** Creator/HaruhiTerada voiced Tsunade's childhood self in flashbacks and Karenbana in ''Guardians of the Crescent Moon Kingdom'', before appearing as Rin Nohara, who'd be pivotal to Tobi's motivation in the series.
** Long before Hanabi Hyūga became important, her actress Creator/KiyomiAsai voiced Ageha, a poor girl from the Land of Waves whom Sakura gave food to.
** The Second Mizukage's actor, Hideyuki Umezu, had previously voiced Amachi in the Land of the Sea filler arc.
** The Second Tsuchikage's actor Osamu Mukai had previously cut his teeth on the holy man who would become Pain's Jigokudō body in the ''Jiraiya's Ninja Scrolls'' special.
* RecycledScript: Noticeable in Part I. Canonically, Team 7 leaving Konoha on a low-ranked mission only to get pulled into something with much higher stakes happened ''one'' time in the Land of Waves arc. In the anime {{filler}} and {{Non Serial Movie}}s, however, it happened every other Tuesday, thanks to it being the go-to plotline for numerous filler arcs ''and'' the first three movies.

* SameVoiceTheirEntireLife:
** Naruto kept his Japanese voice actress even when he grew into an adult. His English voice actress also voices Naruto into adulthood.
** Creator/YuriLowenthal voices Sasuke even in pre-series flashbacks in the dub. Sasuke already had a low voice for a 12-year old at the start so it's not too jarring, plus he sounds young enough in the flashbacks. He also voices Sasuke as an adult using virtually the same tone he did when Sasuke was twelve.
* StarMakingRole: Most of the Los Angeles-based voice actors can, due to the massive popularity of ''Naruto'' in the US, claim their role as their best-known. The main exception is Creator/KyleHebert who is still best known as [[Anime/DragonBallZ Adult Gohan]]. Creator/YuriLowenthal in particular got really popular after voicing Sasuke.
* TrollingCreator:
** Most infamously in regards to everything related to romance in the series (see: [[Analysis/{{Naruto}} the Shipping Rollercoaster]]). By [[WordOfGod his own admission]], Kishimoto indulged himself on playing with the ShipTease through the whole series by planting [[RedHerring several false leads]] in order to mess with the shipping fans until the true OfficialCouple was revealed in the epilogue.
** During [[spoiler:660, he had Madara extract Kurama from Naruto. This was during the holiday week, but for Americans, it came on CHRISTMAS. And then we had to wait three weeks for the next chapter.]]

In which Madara steals Kakashi's Sharingan and enters Obito's alternative world with an exhausted Obito and Sakura alone with him. 115** Kakashi's real face has been a matter of debate for years: what is under that mask? It's never shown, not even on his [[spoiler:likeness on the Hokage monument.]] The tie-in story "Book of Wind" (Chapter 700.2) finally reveals it and [[spoiler:it's the one Pakkun suggested in "Kakashi's Real Face Is Finally Unveiled" manga omake (Chapter 420.5).]] Kishimoto, a troll? Perish the thought!
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Kishimoto's early concept (and the series pilot) live in a completely different continuity from the series as we know it today. Originally,
*** While still involving jutsu, ''Naruto'' took place in an UrbanFantasy setting, including modern fashion and technology, and there was no trace of a "hidden village" to speak of. The pilot featured a gun, a motorcycle and a murder investigation by the regular, {{Muggle}} police.
*** Naruto (the character) was actually a reincarnation of the nine-tailed fox, rather than [[SealedEvilInACan having had the fox sealed in him]] (throughout the pilot chapter, a cover story is perpetuated where Naruto is the fox's son). Also, the beast was sealed away not by the 4th Hokage, but by "9 powerful men," of which only one survived - a grumpy old man of high standing which Naruto refers to as "chief," and is obviously a precursor of the third Hokage.
*** The cast was very different. Most of the important characters from the pilot never appear in the series proper, and vice-versa. The closest we have to an exception to this is early concept art, which featured Ichiraku from the Ramen shop; the above-mentioned character very similar to the 3rd Hokage; Kakashi (sans his lazy eye); Iruka (sans his ponytail or scar); Hinata (wearing a modern dress and wristwatch); Ibiki and Anko. It is not known which other characters were planned originally, but it is explicitly known that many were not. In the [[AllThereInTheManual first databook]] interview, the author relates how he felt the story "wasn't going anywhere", so he went to his editor [[Administrivia/TropesAreTools for help]] and was advised to introduce a rival for Naruto--which ultimately led to the introductions of Sasuke, Sakura (who was originally ''not'' going to be the main heroine, because she had the same level of importance as supporting characters like Kiba or Shikamaru), and the rest of the Konoha 11.
** All of the Akatsuki members, notably, were originally intended to resemble monsters with little-to-no human qualities at all, and some of them (particularly Itachi and Kisame) likely only had more sympathetic qualities added with time - this is especially true of the inhuman-looking Kisame and Zetsu (who've always been that way, from what we see), and can also be seen with Kakuzu, Sasori & Hidan (who all mutilated themselves for power, in the process losing their humanity), as well as Deidara with his hands. Even Itachi, Pain and Konan have elements of this, more specifically with their abilities (Itachi with his eyes, Pain with his multiple bodies, and Konan with her ability to ''turn into paper'').
** [[WordOfGod Kishi has revealed in a recent interview]] that he intended to write seinen when his shounen one-shots kept failing, but his editor convinced him to try one last time before trying for seinen. This last try led to the ''Naruto'' manga.
** Naruto was supposed to be a GogglesDoNothing shonen hero, but the creator found the goggles too tough to draw consistently so he changed it to the ninja headband. The headbands would then be expanded to a cultural motif for the Ninja World and almost every character wears one.
** Boruto and Himawari were supposed to have the Byakugan, but Kishimoto forgot to draw them with it when Chapter 700 came out. This was retconned in ''Anime/TheDayNarutoBecameHokage'', where we see Himawari awakening her Byakugan.
** Creator/VicMignogna was the original choice to voice Orochimaru, but due to being unavailable, the role went to Creator/SteveBlum.
** According to Canadian voice director Karl Willems, Ocean Studios in Vancouver tried hard to have the ''Naruto'' English dub recorded there (as they were still Viz's usual dubbing studio at the time), but it ultimately went to Studiopolis in Los Angeles.
** Kishimoto had intended to follow up the Land of Waves Arc with more storylines of Team 7 traveling together on missions, gradually introducing them to the other shinobi nations and Konoha teams. However, his editor felt this would have dragged the story for far too long and thus the Chunin Exams arc was moved up and retooled in order to fulfill the same purpose.
* WritingByTheSeatOfYourPants: Inevitable, given the schedule constraints of writing a chapter every week and there being no way any author could plan everything ''ten years'' in advance. Unlike some other manga writers, Kishimoto rarely pauses for research, and it shows. A lot of turns of plot involve a RetCon in some capacity; a lot of apparent contradictions, plot holes and {{Ass Pull}}s make more sense when you adopt an out-of-universe perspective.
** During the height of Madara's reign as ultimate villain, [[https://web.archive.org/web/20131225234646/http://www.shonengamez.com/2013/12/22/kishimoto-naruto-will-end-2014/ Kishimoto outright stated]] that he doesn't know how he's going to have him lose. [[spoiler:His solution was to have him stabbed in the back by a DiabolusExNihilo, who wound up being UnskilledButStrong and barely knows how to fight]].

* On Website/FanFictionDotNet, ''Naruto'' has by far the most fanfiction pieces of ANY anime or manga (over 400,000), well over three times as many as runners-up ''WebComic/HetaliaAxisPowers'' and ''Manga/InuYasha''. The only property in ''any'' medium with more fanfictions is ''Literature/HarryPotter'', making ''Naruto'' the second-most popular subject for fanfiction in the world.
* Rock Lee is a shoutout to Creator/BruceLee.
* The name of Kakuzu's attacks are named after Zeon mobile suits from ''Anime/MobileSuitGundam'', a show that the author mentions he watched as a kid in the anecdotes of a much earlier chapter.
* Might Guy is named after the HotBlooded protagonists of ''[[Anime/TheBraveExpressMightGaine Might Gaine]]'' and ''Anime/GaoGaiGar'', Might Senpuuji and Guy Shishioh.
* [[SeriousBusiness Regarding Konan's ultimate paper bomb attack]]:
** To meet the 600 billion quota, she would need to produce 228,159 paper seals every second for 1 month. That's 13,689,546 paper seals every minute; 821,372,779 paper seals every hour; And 19,712,946,700 paper seals every day for one month.
** In 2007, all the ''newspapers'' in the world only sell about 395 ''million'' copies per day (55 million in the U.S).
** Assuming Konan's paper seals have the same dimensions as a standard playing card (63 mm x 88 mm), 600 billion paper seals would have a surface area of 3,326 kilometers squared. New York City has a surface area of 790 kilometers squared. Konan's papers could blot out the sun in New York City four times over.
** A standard 52-card deck weights 94g. 11,538,461,500 decks could be made from Konan's paper: weighing at a total of 1,195,583 tons.
** One ton of non-recycled office paper uses 24 trees (each tree 40 feet tall and 6-8 inches in diameter). Without ninja magic, 28,693,992 trees would have to be slaughtered.
** The typical thickness of a playing card is 0.25mm. If Konan were to stack up all her paper, it would have a height of 150,000 kilometers. The diameter of Jupiter is only 142,984 kilometers. It would take a stack of over 11 Planet Earths to reach 150,000 kilometers.
** The total volume of the paper at 831,600 cubic meters exceeds the volume of the BP oil spill at 4.9 million barrels or 780,000 cubic meters. Konan's papers could soak up the BP oil spill.
** Konan's attack produced one billion explosions per second. If the amount of energy released from one of those explosions is equal to just one gram of TNT then the amount of energy release per second is equivalent to 1 kiloton of TNT. The total amount of energy released from the 10 minute onslaught is equivalent to 600 kilotons of TNT, which translates to 0.6 megatons. To put this into perspective:
*** [[UsefulNotes/AtomicBombingsOfHiroshimaAndNagasaki The Little Boy atomic bomb exploded on Hiroshima]] with an energy of about 15 kilotons of TNT.
*** The highest yield nuclear weapon ever detonated was [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsar_Bomba#Analysis Tsar Bomba]], at 50 megatons.
*** The variable-yield [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B83_nuclear_bomb B83 nuclear bombs]] in the current US arsenal have a maximum yield of exactly twice this estimate of Konan's total assault, at 1.2 megatons.
*** [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_weapon_yield#Examples_of_nuclear_weapon_yields This chart]] of nuclear weapon yields suggests that ''this estimate'' of Konan's assault would carry a ''total'' yield of somewhere between the Ivy King and the B83.
** Supposing four tags are the size of one book's leaf of paper, bound in sets of 200 leaves (400 pages), that's 800 tags per book. Squeeze those on to double sided bookshelves, eight shelves high, eight books per foot. Konan filled a library building, ten stories high, each story having twenty-two quarter mile long shelves. Imagine every sheet of paper in the French Bibliotheque Nationale exploding four times.
** It would be simpler if Konan had some kind of doubling power where she could split paper bombs into double the number of equal sized paper bombs with a fixed input of time and chakra. If she had, starting with a single paper bomb she would only have to employ this jutsu ceiling(lg2(6,000,000,000)) = 33 times. Then again, the implications of allowing such a jutsu to operate without bound are catastrophic- even according to the highest estimate, it would only take 186 applications of the jutsu for the mass of produced paper bombs to exceed that of the observable universe.
** From this we can determine that WritersCannotDoMath and have SciFiWritersHave/NoSenseOfUnits.
* Mifune is named after Creator/ToshiroMifune, famous for his portrayal of samurai in movies of Creator/AkiraKurosawa. Interestingly enough, the name of his sword is Meifou Kurosawa.
* Every time two Akatsuki members fought, an Uchiha was involved and won.
** Also, whenever an Akatsuki member has to [[TheCoatsAreOff take his robe off,]] he dies during that fight.
* Mizuki was created to be as offensive to Naruto as possible. How so, you ask? [[FelonyMisdemeanor His least favorite food is ramen.]]
* Naruto and Gaara have a lot in common: their father is the Yondaime and their mothers died after they were born; their hobbies deal with taking care of plants (Naruto: gardening, Gaara: taking care of cactus); by ''Shippuden'', they're the same size (height and weight); they both want to fight Sasuke; if you add the month and day of their birthdays, you get 20; and they were also made Jinchuuriki when they were babies.
** WordOfGod says this was intentional to make Gaara as the {{Foil}} to Naruto. And if that's not all, their fathers as well as the events of meeting their fathers also play out very similarly to each other.
* The Third, Fourth, and Fifth Kazekage have all had some variety of telekinetic control over sand--the Third with his Iron Sands, the Fourth with his Gold Dust, and the Fifth (Gaara) being...Gaara. (It's almost like they pay attention to terrain advantage or something.)
* Deidara is the only known person who was alive and fought a [[spoiler:living]] Kage straight up and won, in this case winning against Gaara in his own village: what happened between the Third Kazekage and Sasori is unknown; the Fourth Kazekage was slain by Orochimaru in an ambush; the battle between the Third Hokage and Orochimaru was a draw at best (if only because Orochimaru wasn't trying as hard as he could have); Minato defeated Tobi, but gave his life to seal Kurama inside both himself and Naruto; and [[spoiler:Danzo]] wasn't officially sworn in.
* Mitarashi Anko is the name of two types of ''dango''. Ain't that funny?
* Chapter 615 -- where Hinata successfully breaks Naruto out of his DespairEventHorizon and they subsequently have their HoldingHands moment -- came out on the week of Hinata's birthday, December 27th. Fans following early leaks/scanslations got it ''exactly'' on her birthday, but that's probably a coincidence.
* Each of the Sound Trio's names (Dosu, Zaku, and Kin) are each a form of onomatopoeia.
* Torune Aburame's design was apparently inspired from that of American superheroes.
* ''Naruto'' concluded with 700 chapters, and ''Manga/NarutoGaiden'' ended with 10 chapters. 700 + 10 = 710. Naruto's name in goroawase can mean 7 (Na) and 10 (to). 7 + 10 = 17, which is how old Naruto is in the final arc.
