Context Trivia / MetalGearRisingRevengeance

Go To

* ApprovalOfGod: ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=meJckIFWFR0 Metal Gear Sunrising]]'', a Creator/FreddieWong parody about Raiden trying to lead a normal life in a parody of the first scene of ''Film/AmericanPsycho'' was not only approved by Creator/{{Konami}} and Creator/HideoKojima, but Creator/QuintonFlynn himself reprised his role as the voice of Raiden.
* BeamMeUpScotty: The "Standing Here I Realize" meme shows the scene where Raiden is repeatedly punching Armstrong while "It Has to Be this Way" plays over it. The song in question actually plays a bit later, during the final fight between the two [[spoiler:amid the burning wreckage of EXCELSUS while Raiden wields Murasama]], while the rapid-punching sequence happens in a glorified cutscene right before Armstrong reveals his nanomachines (son).
* TheDanza: Philip-Anthony Rodriguez provides the English voice for Samuel Rodrigues.
* DevelopmentGag: The character of Boris was featured in the original version of ''Metal Gear Solid: Rising'' that was set prior to the events of ''Metal Gear Solid 4''. This is alluded to in several Codec calls revealing that he met Raiden at Area 51, the place Raiden was turned into a cyborg, and he helped Raiden and the Paradise Lost Army rescue Sunny from the Patriots.
* DuelingGames: The game came out one month after fellow HackAndSlash games ''VideoGame/NinjaGaiden 3: [[UpdatedRerelease Razor's Edge]]'' and ''VideoGame/DMCDevilMayCry''. ''VideoGame/GodOfWarAscension'' followed not more than a couple of weeks later.
* DummiedOut: The Hebidamashi, a wooden sword that speaks with Solid Snake's voice, was only included in the Japanese version of the VR Missions expansion pack. The reason for its exclusion in the English version wouldn't become obvious until months later, when Konami announced they would be replacing Creator/DavidHayter with Creator/KieferSutherland as the voice of Snake in ''VideoGame/MetalGearSolidVThePhantomPain''; reusing Hayter's voice clips would make the transition even more jarring, while Sutherland is too expensive for such a small joke role.
* FakeAmerican: Creator/AlastairDuncan, who is Scottish, voices the [[{{Eagleland}} very American]] Senator Armstrong.
* MemeRoleReprise: After WebVideo/{{Max0r}}'s "An Incorrect Summary of ''VideoGame/MetalGearRisingRevengeance''" gave birth to a memetic exchange between Senator Armstrong and Raiden, Creator/QuintonFlynn (Raiden) and Creator/AlastairDuncan (Armstrong) [[https://www.reddit.com/r/metalgearrising/comments/wpftra/the_original_voice_actors_of_senator_armstrong/ dubbed the infamous "Nice argument, Senator"]] exchange.
-->'''Raiden:''' That's a nice argument, Senator. Why don't you back it up with a source?!
-->'''Senator Armstrong:''' My source is that I '''made it the FUCK up!'''
* MidDevelopmentGenreShift: Originally, the game was announced under the title of ''Metal Gear Solid: Rising'' as a stealth-action game with a focus on stealth hunting. The game instead shifted to a focus on hack and slash gameplay when the development of it was switched from Kojima Productions to Creator/PlatinumGames. However, the emphasis on stealth hunting still remains with the alert system, AR vision mode, and ability to hide and do stealth take downs (akin to the ''[[VideoGame/BatmanArkhamSeries Batman: Arkham]]'' series).
* NoExportForYou:
** On consoles, ''Metal Gear Rising'' is a Platform/PlayStation3 exclusive in Japan because the Japanese Platform/Xbox360 version was cancelled. Because of Konami's regional maps, this expands to the whole of East Asia and Southeast Asia.
** The Solid Snake Sword DLC is this for Western fans thanks to Creator/DavidHayter being replaced for ''VideoGame/MetalGearSolidVThePhantomPain'' by Creator/KieferSutherland; it'd be too expensive to bring him in for a joke role.
** The PC version isn't available on Platform/{{Steam}} in all Southeast Asia regions for no given reason other than it being a [=PS3=] exclusive in Asia, since the [=PS3=] version is being sold at all Sony Centers and game shops in aforementioned regions.
* PreOrderBonus: Different bonus skins for Raiden are available for pre-ordering the game, including a ''Metal Gear Solid'' Cyborg Ninja skin, a ''Metal Gear Solid 4'' Raiden skin, a red "Inferno Armor" that gives you more grenades, a white "Medical Armor" that gives you more healing items, and a green "Commando Armor" that give you more rockets. The Steam version comes packaged with most of these as standard.
* OlderThanTheyThink: Sam was not the first one to use a bullet trigger on his katana sheath. The 2005 manga ''Manga/GaRei'' already had protagonists fighting ghosts and demons with these.
* RefittedForSequel: Blade Wolf combines elements of Crying Wolf from ''Metal Gear Solid 4'' and an unused RobotDog AssistCharacter from Platinum's previous game, ''VideoGame/{{Vanquish}}'', as seen [[http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/vanquish8510.jpg here.]]
* RoleReprise: Once again, we have Creator/QuintonFlynn providing the voice of Raiden. [[Franchise/KingdomHearts Got it memorized?]]
* SavedFromDevelopmentHell: The game was cancelled before Platinum got involved.
* SimilarlyNamedWorks: The song "Red Sun" should not be confused with the credits theme of the same name in ''VideoGame/MetalGear2SolidSnake''.
* StillbornFranchise: Stillborn subseries, to be exact. ''Revengeance'' was successful enough that Kojima was talking about a potential sequel, but the conflicts between him and Konami supposedly put an end to whatever future installments in this subseries. As of now, the closest thing it has to a sequel is ''VideoGame/AstralChain'', a SpiritualSuccessor that combines gameplay elements of both ''Metal Gear Rising'' and ''VideoGame/NierAutomata''.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Kojima initially wanted gameplay to be like "a hunter stalking their prey." However, the Kojima Productions version was cancelled after difficulties with gameplay and stage design in late 2010.
** Kojima considered offering the project to several Western studios, before settling on Platinum.
** ''Rising'' was originally an {{interquel}} set between ''Metal Gear Solid 2'' (the Plant Chapter ended in 2009) and ''Metal Gear Solid 4'' (which is set in 2014). The final version is set in 2018, four years after the events of ''Metal Gear Solid 4''.
** Kojima personally wanted Gray Fox to be the main character as opposed to Raiden. However, the development team wanted to use Raiden. Kojima also admitted that had Fox been used, then he would have been the director of the game instead. In the final version, Fox's [[PoweredArmor exoskeleton]] and sword appear in the game as [[DownloadableContent DLC]].
** You could initially run on walls and running toward enemies would automatically have Raiden block the bullets. It was scrapped as it felt it would be too easy for the player, although Raiden still parries bullets while in Ninja Run.
** Had David Hayter not been replaced by Kiefer Sutherland, it's possible Western players would have gotten the full version of the Wooden Sword DLC.
** The game was intended to be dubbed solely in English when Platinum took hold of it, with subtitles depending on the region à la ''VideoGame/{{Bayonetta}}'' and most of their previous works during their time in Capcom; this was a decision Kojima had supported. Konami, several members of Kojima Productions, and allegedly Creator/KenyuHoriuchi, Raiden's Japanese voice actor, had managed to convince Platinum into providing a Japanese language track for the final version. That said, the imperfect lip syncing in the final version makes it obvious that the changes and recording were made too late.
** Regarding the "[[FanNickname ninja cat]]" on the beach in the second mission that dodges all of Raiden's attacks, [[http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-03-05-revengeance-used-to-have-a-lot-more-cats there was apparently supposed to be more of these throughout the game that were supposed to eventually follow Raiden around.]]
** People digging through the files of the demo and full game found unused, early mixes of the boss themes within. These mixes, while largely similar to the final version's, have less electronic instrumentation and a few have different lyrics. These mixes can be found fairly easily floating around the internet. "A Stranger I Remain" in particular features an entirely different verse that wasn't in the final version.
* WordOfGod: Per Kojima, [[spoiler:Sam could have defeated Armstrong in their fight at the end of the ''Jetstream'' chapter had Sam not rushed into the battle and instead wore Armstrong down like Raiden did.]]
* YouLookFamiliar: The designs for the Mastiff enemies (the hulking [=UGs=] with the cannon attached to their right arm) were reused from concept artwork from ''Guns of the Patriots'' that was originally meant to be the designs for one of the B&B Corps members.
