* DawsonCasting: Even though Bret was older than Bart, Jack Kelly was nearly seven months older than Creator/JamesGarner.
* FakeAmerican: Londoner Creator/RogerMoore plays Beau Maverick, a Southerner and Confederate Army veteran.
* SeparatedAtBirthCasting: The producers cast Robert Colbert as Brent Maverick, due to having a similar look to James Garner, and they even ordered him to wear a costume identical to that worn by Garner. Because of the obvious comparisons this would bring, Colbert told them, "Put me in a dress and call me Brenda, but don't do this to me!"
* ShoutOut: Two wildly different things were named for the TV series. The first was a brand of budget playing cards by Hoyle Products in what could be considered a case of bootleg merchandising. (The brand is now owned, along with the Hoyle brand by the US Playing Card Company, the makers of Bicycle brand cards. Notably those two brands continue to use the face card designs from Hoyle, which are different than the ones used on all other USPCC brands.) The other is the Dallas Mavericks of the UsefulNotes/NationalBasketballAssociation. Series star James Garner was one of the team's original owners.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** A then-unknown Creator/SeanConnery was originally offered the role of Beau Maverick. Who got the part? Creator/RogerMoore.
** Creator/RodTaylor was considered for Bart Maverick.
** The studio wanted Jack Kelly, Creator/RogerMoore, and Robert Colbert to appear together, but Moore had left the series by the time Colbert filmed his first episode.
* WrittenByCastMember: In addition to making regular appearances as Big Mike [=McComb=], Leo Gordon also wrote several episodes of the series.

* AlanSmithee: On the score album, the last track is a saloon song called "Tartine De Merde", whose singer is billed as "[[Film/ThreeAmigos S. Bush]]." Have a look at the music credit on the poster above there to see his real name.
* AllStarCast: Within the many [[TheCameo cameos]]. Country singers and old western-actors have supporting roles, especially during the All River's Draw Poker Championship, as Robert Fuller, Creator/DenverPyle, Creator/WilliamSmith or [[Film/{{Blacula}} William Marshall]]. Also, the championship features cameos from Doug [=McClure=] and Creator/DanHedaya.
* DeletedRole:
** Music/AliceCooper had a cameo as the town drunk, but his segment was cut.
** Creator/LindaHunt and Creator/ClintWalker both had cameo roles in this film, Hunt playing a magician and Walker playing a sheriff. However, the film itself ran too long, so their parts were cut from the theatrical release.
* DeletedScene: In ''Five Screenplays with Essays'', Creator/WilliamGoldman describes an earlier version of the script, in which Maverick explains he has a magic ability to call the card he needs out of the deck. Although he is not able to do so successfully, the old hermit he attempts to demonstrate it for tells him that he really does have the magic in him. This scene was shot with Creator/LindaHunt playing the hermit but it was felt it did not work in the context of the rest of the movie and was cut.
* FriendshipOnTheSet: Creator/MelGibson and Creator/JodieFoster became close friends during production.
* PredecessorCastingGag: Bret Maverick is frequently accompanied by Marshal Cooper, played by Creator/JamesGarner, who was Bret Maverick in [[Series/{{Maverick}} the original series]]. [[spoiler:At the end of the movie, we find out that Cooper is actually Maverick's father]].
* RoleReprise: Given the reveal that [[spoiler: Zane Cooper is actually Maverick's father]] it means that [[spoiler: James Garner was reprising the role he played in the episode "Pappy". Or, even better, since the film is cagey about the year of its setting, he may in fact be playing... Bret Maverick, and Gibson is in fact Bret '''Jr.''' The idea has been endorsed by many, including Gardner.]]
* ThrowItIn:
** Annabelle's gracelessness in the film stems from the first scene Creator/JodieFoster shot, when she waited for Creator/MelGibson to help her down from the stagecoach. Instead, he took her parasol and walked away. She tried to get down alone, and flopped to the ground. Creator/RichardDonner liked it so much that he kept the shot in the film, and staged more scenes of Foster stumbling, being dumped through windows, etc.
** During Marshal Cooper's explanation of the rules at the beginning of the tournament, he pulls out his own guns and claims that they're the only weapons allowed on the ship. When putting them away, he ends up dropping one but smoothly continues talking while someone hands him his dropped gun. James Garner had actually dropped the prop by accident but kept acting through the mess-up, resulting in a funny moment that the director kept in the final cut.
* UncreditedRole: Creator/DannyGlover's cameo is uncredited.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Creator/MegRyan was the original choice for Annabelle. Creator/MichellePfeiffer and Creator/JuliaRoberts were also considered.
** After writing the script, Creator/WilliamGoldman offered the role of Zane Cooper to friend and collaborator Creator/PaulNewman. He loved the script and agreed to the film, but the producers lowballed his asking price; he reluctantly turned down their offer.
** Music/PhilCollins revealed in his autobiography that he was considered for an unspecified part in the film, but that he didn't get the role.
** Creator/JamesGarner wasn't an initial consideration for the role of Zane Cooper, and ony landed the role when other choices, like Creator/PaulNewman declined. The film definitely would have been different without Garner eventually taking on the major supporting role of Coop, and it makes [[spoiler: the final reveal that "Coop" is actually Maverick's father all the more sweeter because his father is played by the original Maverick.]]
