1* BTeamSequel: [[VideoGame/LuigisMansion1 The original]] was developed in-house at Creator/{{Nintendo}} while this game and [[VideoGame/LuigisMansion3 its sequel]] were developed by Creator/NextLevelGames.
2* {{Blooper}}: During Mission D-2 of the Secret Mine, a spotty transmission from E. Gadd ends with the line "But whatev_r you do, don’t pa _ _ t with cr_ _ _ a _ _l!" Whether this is a mistranslation or just a simple typo, there is no way to render it legible in a way that connects to the circumstances of the mission in question; the last word contains one letter more than necessary to spell "crystal", and the only verb that can be spelled using "pa _ _ t" is "paint", which wouldn't make sense in context.
3* ChristmasRushed: Inverted. The development of ''Dark Moon'' was delayed to coincide with ''Advertising/TheYearOfLuigi'' in 2013, rather than releasing it on 2012's holiday seasons.

5** The original Luigi's Mansion was developed with the Gamecube's stereoscopic 3D rendering ability in mind, which was ultimatively never used due the cost of the hardware needed to actually bring the effect out of a TV. Being able to have 3D effects was the reason why the sequel was developed for the 3DS rather than a home console.
6** The Sneakers are based on a scrapped ghost from the original, whose purpose was to give Luigi a health-crippling JumpScare.
7* DummiedOut: The first boss of the game, the Grouchy Possessor, inexplicably has the same [[https://youtu.be/z9WMuWv2E10 catching theme]] as the Overset Possessor, the third boss. In the files, the Grouchy Possessor [[https://tcrf.net/images/9/9f/LM2-MUS_MansionA_SpiderBoss_4_160.ogg actually has its own theme]], which goes unused.
8* MarketBasedTitle: The original [=3DS=] version is known as ''Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon'' in North America and simply ''Luigi's Mansion 2'' elsewhere. This was done to raise awareness to the fact there was indeed another ''Luigi's Mansion'' game. The remaster, on the other hand, is ''Luigi's Mansion 2 HD'' across the globe.
9* SequelGap: The game was released twelve years after the original ''VideoGame/LuigisMansion1'' in 2001.
10* ShortRunInPeru: The game was supposed to be released on March 29th, 2013, but wasn't, due to its launch coinciding with Good Friday, a Christian Holiday in parts of Europe. In response, Nintendo gave special permission to affected countries to release the game either a Day Early (Thursday), or a Day Late (Saturday). Some countries were very unfortunate to not get the game until the following Tuesday (as Monday was Easter Monday).
11* MilestoneCelebration: Part of Nintendo's ''[[Advertising/TheYearOfLuigi Year of Luigi]]'', the 30th anniversary of Luigi's debut in ''VideoGame/MarioBros''. Incidentally, the inclusion of ''Luigi's Mansion'' just happened to be by chance, since it wasn't developed for the anniversary in mind.
12* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Earlier builds of the game shown off during E3 and Comic Con events have E. Gadd mention that the Old Clockworks closed down due to a series of "horrific accidents", and during the level itself, Luigi can pull out a lab coat jamming some gears, heavily implying someone got caught in the gears and crushed. These dark implications were toned down in the final release, with the lab coat being completely absent and E. Gadd instead saying the place is a good haunt for ghosts due to neglect.
