Context Trivia / KaizokuSentaiGokaiger

Go To

* ActingForTwo:
** Not only does Creator/KenjiOhba reprise his role as [[Series/DenshiSentaiDenziman Denzi Blue]], he also appears as said character, [[Series/BattleFeverJ Battle Kenya]], ''and'' Series/SpaceSheriffGavan in the ''Gokaiger vs. Gavan'' film. All untransformed. In fact, it's PlayedForLaughs and [[LampshadeHanging lampshaded]] when Daigoro Oume and Shiro Akebono bump into the Gokaigers at the same time: the Gokaigers mistake them for Gavan, but Gai insists that there are actually a lot of differences between the two ''while he's looking at both of them''.
** Earlier in ''Ghost Ship'', it seems modifications were done to the Gokai-Oh suit to make the evil Gokai-Oh suit. As a result, the two Gokai-Ohs are only seen together in CG, unless only parts of one interacts with the other, and never the same piece (right arm with right arm, etc.).
* ActorInspiredElement: Gai Ikari was originally meant to be a straight-faced character who would serve as a MoralityChain for the others, helping them become a more traditional Sentai. But Junya Ikeda’s natural enthusiasm resulted in him being rewritten as the lovable AscendedFanboy the character ended up as.
* BonusEpisode: ''[[Recap/KaizokuSentaiGokaigerLetsDoThisGoldenlyRoughly36RoundGokaiChange Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger: Let's Do This Goldenly! Roughly! 36 Round Gokai Change!!]]'' was released with an issue of TV Magazine.
* CashCowFranchise: The Ranger Keys, specifically, which have gone on for a good while after ''Gokaiger'' ended. The ''Series/TokumeiSentaiGoBusters'' keys were reasonable since that team did cross over with the Gokaigers, but after that we got keys for not only all the [[Series/ZyudenSentaiKyoryuger Kyoryugers]] but also ''their enemies'', as well as unofficial (as in, not working) keys for ''Series/HikoninSentaiAkibaranger''. That seemed to be the end of it for a while, but then in 2015 came the announcement of ''even more'' keys featuring rangers that didn't get them the first time around- [[Series/HikariSentaiMaskman X-1 Mask]], [[Series/NinpuuSentaiHurricaneger [=HurricaneDark=]]], [[Series/TokusouSentaiDekaranger DekaBright and DekaGold]], [[Film/TokumeiSentaiGobustersReturnsVsDobutsuSentaiGobusters the Doubutsu Sentai Go-Busters]], and [[Series/TensouSentaiGoseiger GoseiGreen]]. Not only that, but keys based on ''Series/ResshaSentaiToQger'' were also announced, including ''all the line changes''. Although this got somewhat justified in their crossover with ''Series/DobutsuSentaiZyuohger'', where they ended up transforming into some members of the 4 post-''Gokaiger'' teams.
** In December 2021 and throughout 2022, for the 10th anniversary of the series, as well as the 10th anniversary movie; ''Ten Gokaiger,'' Bandai started releasing new versions of the Mobirate, the older Ranger Keys (with new buttons and springs to allow people to replicate the flipping of the legs from the show and associated movies with the characters), the Gokai Cellular, and new Ranger Keys based on the red rangers (or team leaders in Zenkaiser's case) and some of the 6th rangers from the post-Gokaiger to Zenkaiger teams, with possibly more to come. The Mobirates and Gokai Cellulars are modified from the original molds; the Mobirates being slightly bigger than the original and having the screw holes covered up on top of other stuff modified from the original mold, and both have new sounds replacing a lot of the older sounds recorded by the original voice actors of the Mobirates and Navi, as well as has the ''Gokaiger'' theme song, the ''Super Sentai Hero Getter'' song (and has the last verse and chorus of the 10th anniversary version for the teams post-Gokaiger), other music from the show, as well as voice clips from the first and last episodes from the Gokaigers making their stands against the Zangyack. The Gokai Cellular is even getting an add-on piece called the "Tweaker/Tsuiker Unit" that allows the user to play transform into the post-Gokaiger 6th rangers (and Beet and Stag Buster in ''Go-Busters''' case). These sets come in fancy packaging and are of great quality like you'd expect from premium products. And the fandom has been over the moon happy with them.
*** The Ranger Keys have also inspired others to make their own keys. Ei Hamura, the actor who played [=TenmaRanger=], is an avid fan of the keys and makes original [=RKs=] that aren't canon in the sentai verse.
** ''Gokaiger'' is one of the only teams to have S.H.Figuarts figures released for its entire team before SHF pivoted away from Super Sentai. Once SHF Sentai figures were being made again, it look less than a year for Bandai to show off a Gokai Red figure as the first figure in the even more premium Shinkocchou Seihou subline of SHF.
* CharacterOutlivesActor: The Rangers in the Legend War are implied to be the same characters who wore the suits in their respective shows, including Daita Ōiwa ([[Series/HimitsuSentaiGoranger the original Ki Ranger]]), whose actor died in 1978.
* CreatorsFavoriteEpisode: Yui Koike's favorite episode is #41, which depicted Ahim's tragic past of losing her home planet to the Zangyack.
* MilestoneCelebration: 35 seasons!
* PromotedFanboy: Junya Ikeda, Gai's actor, [[http://forums.henshinjustice.com/showpost.php?p=1367490&postcount=395 is a lifelong Sentai fan]]. Also Gai himself, in fact his [[GenreSavvy knowledge of Super Sentai]] is his useful skill!
* PropRecycling: Naturally, though most of them have to be remade entirely and some costumes have been altered, as mentioned under MiniDressOfPower.
** A special cross-franchise case is with Damaras' sword in #42, which looks to be a redeco'd Medaljalibur from ''Series/KamenRiderOOO''.
** The Sneak Brothers monster costume from #8 gets recycled in ''Gokaiger vs. Gavan'', albeit as a GenderFlip.
* RealitySubtext: Ryota Ozawa, who plays Marvelous, is best friends with Yasuhisa Furuhara, who played Sosuke.
* ShootTheMoney:
** The reason that you never see more than three Sgormin on-screen at the same time is that Toei literally only has three Sgormin suits.
** This may also be the case with the [[LawOfChromaticSuperiority Dogormin (read: red Sgormin)]] since only two of them appear each time. Thanks to a WhipPan between split-screens, we see four Dogormin on screen in #49, two over each shoulder when they come to offer backup to Insarn.
** It's assumed most of the gender changed suits just add a piece of fabric for a skirt for male to female (the best example would be whenever Luka uses the Big One power; the suit looks baggier on her compared to when a male uses it, likely meaning it's the same suit, altered as stated before). However, some of the teams have suits where there are more major design changes (Bioman, Changeman, Flashman, Jetman, Hurricanger, Magiranger) so Toei likely had to be judicious about when to gender change those suits (of all the teams, only Jetman, Hurricanger, and Magiranger need new gendered suits for a normal full-team Gokai Change.
*** [[Series/MahouSentaiMagiranger A female MagiRed]] is used for every all red Gokai Change because a new female [=MagiRed=] suit had to be made and Toei obviously wanted their money's worth (tellingly, it's always used by Ahim, even negating the possible need to make two or alter what they have to fit Luka's suit actor). Otherwise, the go-to genderswaped red suits are [=GekiRed=] and Shinken Red (which was done back in ''Shinkenger'' itself), which have been used by both Luka and Ahim. Later in the series, a female Ginga Red was made, a necessity for the all-lion change in #45 but also used for another all-red change in 48, by Ahim and Luka respectively, and was even reprised for the latter in ''Zyuohger''.
*** Ahim likely Gokai Changed into [[Series/ChoushinseiFlashman a female Green Flash]] because of this. Toei may've known that they were gonna get Dai back but no pink rangers and made the suit for the All-Green change in #43, killing two birds with one stone.
*** It also helps to have the Gokaigers' cast of veteran suit actors wear costumes that they had worn in previous years, even if they do not match their color. For instance, the all-blue change in #45 has all Gokaigers (with the exception of Silver as Aorenger) wearing a suit which their suit actor had worn previously. The all-yellow change in #44 has Green and Yellow become Hurricane Yellow and Gosei Yellow respectively. Counting his appearance in ''Zyuohger'', Gokai Green has become Gosei Red three times.
*** Of the ten Extra Hero suits, only three ([=MagiMother=], Zubaan and Lady Shinken Red) were used by more than one Gokaiger.
* SurprisinglyLenientCensor: Ryota Ozawa was surprised to see the censors allowed the foot stabbing scene in the finished product. He also later said that he was surprised at the level of violence in general that was in it for a kid's show.
* ThrowItIn: For the two-part ''Go-Onger'' tribute, a number of interactions between Sosuke Esumi and Gai were ad-libbed, their actors having co-starred in earlier productions.
* TroubledProduction:
** Reportedly, two of the head writers nearly came to blows over Gai Yuki of ''Series/ChoujinSentaiJetman'' in the Great Legend War - one of them, an original writer for ''Jetman'', didn't want him to return, but the other was insistent he did.
** There were also rumors that [=GokaiGreen=] was going to have to be recast or otherwise replaced after his actor Kazuki Shimizu was injured when they were filming near where the early 2011 earthquake struck (thankfully, this was just a rumor.)
*** To be fair, the earthquake did just fine messing up production on it's own, causing 199 Heroes to be postponed from 5/21 to 6/11. The series was only postponed a week (earthquake occurred before the Dekaranger tribute). That not getting into the fact that the earthquake would be on everyone's minds and they likely had their own worries about it.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen
** According to director Hiroshi Butsuda, it was considered that the 35th series would be a "Mecha Sentai" before, as testified by producer Takaaki Utsunomiya, the pirate motif was proposed by head writer Naruhisa Arakawa. A Mecha Sentai would appear ten years later in ''Zenkaiger''.
** The Mobilates were proposed to be smartphones but changed to conventional mobile phones to fit the classical motif of pirates. It was also considered to have Tomokazu Seki record a Gokai Change announcement for '''every individual Sentai warrior''' before this was scaled down to just the teams and certain subdivisions such as Gouraiger, Shurikenger, Go-On Wings, Gosei Knight etc. However, an announcement for Go-On Gold alone would be used in ''Super Hero Taisen Z''.
** A potential gimmick of combining the Gokai Saber and Gokai Gun with a steering wheel was dropped, with the Gokaigers instead routinely swapping their weapons for DualWielding.
** Yutaka Kobayashi, who we now know as [[Series/KamenRiderGaim Kaito Kumon / Kamen Rider Baron]], almost won the part of Captain Marvelous but [[http://henshinjustice.com/2013/10/27/kamen-rider-baron-the-banana-who-split-on-gokaiger/ had to drop out]] because he was committed to ''[[Manga/ThePrinceOfTennis Tenimyu]]''. .
** Luka was initially devised as a character who would use her sex appeal as a weapon. Remnants of this concept can be seen in Gokai Yellow's "provocative" pose, and Luka's FakeDefector ploy to Basco in #16.
** Head writer Naruhisa Arakawa [[http://www.jefusion.com/2011/09/don-dogoiers-backstory-revealed.html stated in an interview]] that his original idea for Don's backstory was for Don to have been an orphan who witnessed his scientist father's horrific death at the hands of Zangyack; this would have been established in #3 to explain the fear and hesitation which Don demonstrates in that episode. This was dropped in favor of having Don be "an ordinary guy." He ultimately left the character backstory-less once he realized he preferred characterizing him as a RidiculouslyAverageGuy. The only remnant of this scrapped story that did make it in a sort of way is that Don's homeworld did get blown up by the Zangyack. It gets only a passing mention when he talks about [[spoiler:being able to restore his homeworld with the Greatest Treasure of the Universe in #49]]. And, aside from the whole thing [[spoiler:he fabricated]] about being an amnesiac dragon-slayer, not much is said of his backstory except for the details on how he joined the crew.
** An early concept by Arakawa was introducing the granddaughter of Commander Gonpachi Edogawa, TheMentor of ''Gorenger'', as an "Earthling representative" who would teach the Gokaigers about the legendary Sentai. Remnants of this are seen with the nursery teacher who recognises the Gorengers when the Gokaigers change into them in #1, and the young boy who mentions having lost his grandfather during the Legend War in #2; ultimately, the position of "Earthling representative" was taken by SixthRanger Gai Ikari.
** ''Gokaiger'' originally wasn't meant to have ''that'' many returning characters. It was said that the only returning characters would have been those connected to Gokai-Oh-related toys (which mean those from ''Gorenger'' and the series between ''Gaoranger'' and ''Gokaiger'') with exceptions including ''Gekiranger'', where the actor wanted to return, and ''Carranger'', which was done purely for comedy. One of the returning actors expressed how awesome it was on a Twitter post and it didn't gain traction until the 2011 Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, where a special Twitter set up by the original actors to calm the children, inspired others to try to return to their roles, even if they had retired from acting. This led to some tributes essentially being shoehorned in, at the cost of giving the characters development and the FullyAbsorbedFinale afforded to all other post-Shinkenger teams.
*** Gai Yuuki of ''Series/ChoujinSentaiJetman'' nearly didn't get to show up in the Great Legend War. One of ''Gokaiger'''s writers was one of the writers for ''Jetman'' and actually got into a fist fight with one of the other writers over the man's fate and if he should come back.
** Initially, the show was committed to focusing on the legendary Red Rangers. However, Ryuji Sainei's schedule made it apparent that Banban "Ban" Akaza ([=DekaRed=]) could not be accomodated into the ''Dekaranger'' tribute (#5) as originally planned, so his role was taken by former [=DekaMaster=] Doggie Kruger (voiced by Tetsu Inada), with Ban making a brief appearance at the end of the episode.
** For #9, the ''Gaoranger'' tribute, writer Junko Komura initially wrote Kakeru Shishi ([=GaoRed=]) as the hot-blooded character he was back in ''Gaoranger''. At the request of producer Takaaki Utsunomiya, his character was amended to be more reserved so as to establish Kakeru's maturity post-''Gaoranger''.
** For once, admitted by the filmmakers themselves, in regards to the 199 Sentai movie ([[https://web.archive.org/web/20120502100741/http://orendsrange.blogspot.com/2011/06/199-great-hero-battle-movie-synopsis.html taken from the translated pamphlet given out during the film and posted on someone's webpage; warning, this page also contains a spoilery synopsis of the film]])
*** Dead characters from previous seasons were apparently [[BackFromtheDead brought back to life]] to fight in the legend war. Who brought them back isn't clear. Apparently Rio and Mele being killed in the series and then revived to fight Long in ''Go-on vs Geki'' is mentioned in the pamphlet as something that happened, so this adds a bit more evidence that Gokaiger incorporates everything as [[ContinuityNod "canon."]]
*** There was a massive battle that happened prior to what we saw in the Legend War where over 100 robots/giants fought against the Zangyack fleet. Many of the robots were destroyed or killed during this battle. This was also mentioned in an interview with the Director, Takemoto and was posted on 2ch long before the pamphlet came out. The only hint towards this in the actual movie is a brief shot of a destroyed Gosei Great during the opening battle.
** Much like with [[SixthRanger Secondary Riders]] in the crossovers for ''Franchise/KamenRider'', Gokai Silver has an EarlyBirdCameo in the crossover with ''Goseiger''; however, it's reported that had it not been for the earthquake forcing a change of plans, his debut would've been much bigger than what the end result was.
** Thanks to owners fiddling around with the Mobirates toy, they had learned that it had already been preprogrammed with the cry of "''Series/KamenRiderOOO''!" a year before ''Film/KamenRiderXSuperSentaiSuperHeroTaisen'' was even announced. It is highly possible that they had planned for the Gokaigers and OOO to team up while OOO was still airing, but was scrapped.
** Zodomas, the MOTW in #4, was originally named "Zanzas".
** Initially, Basco's partner would have been a woman pirate. The monkey that would be named Sally was added to the pitch, and the difficulties of juggling the two was resolved by axing the woman in favor of the monkey.
** Sally was initially envisioned as a large figure in the vein of [[Franchise/StarWars Chewbacca]] but this was changed to a smaller stature, necessitating a modification to the costume.
** #28, the ''Jetman'' tribute, was subject to a number of modifications:
*** Veteran writer Toshiki Inoue did consider bringing back Kotaro Tanaka as Ryu Tendo (Red Hawk) but decided against it lest he overshadow the Gokaigers and so Toshihide Wakamatsu was brought back as Gai Yuki (Black Condor).
*** The scene in which Gai Yuki punches Joe was challenged by one who claimed that Joe would not fall to him and so suggested that he punch Don instead. Inoue, however, insisted that Gai Yuki, being one of the strongest ''Sentai'' characters, would throw a punch at the stronger Gokaiger rather than the relatively timid Don, as it would not suit his character to bully the weak.
*** The script called for Gai's ghost to give the expected cry of "[[ByThePowerOfGrayskull Cross Changer!]]" as he transformed. However, both Wakamatsu and Inoue decided it would be better to do the transformation without a word.
*** There was a scene confirming the reason that Gai Ikari could not see the ghost of Gai Yuki when the other Gokaigers could was because he was an Earthling. However, it was cut for time.
** The first draft of #29, the ''Abaranger'' tribute, had Ahim and Emiri commandeering a television station where they sang and dance while showing off their cosplay.
** For #31, the ''Ohranger'' tribute, it was proposed that Masashi Goda (who had recently appeared in ''Series/SamuraiSentaiShinkenger'') return as Yuuji Mita ([=OhBlue=]), who would keep the Gokaigers busy whilst Basco was confronted by the former [=OhRed=]. However, director Noboru Takemoto opted to bring back Tamao Sato as Momo Maruo ([=OhPink=]) instead.
** Emperor Akudos Gill's appearance is derived from an early design for Prince Warz Gill.
** There was an idea that Damaras would betray TheEmpire. Ironically, he ended up as perhaps the most loyal Zangyack member.
** Writer Yoshio Urasawa and director Taro Sakamoto planned for Jealousto, who had appeared in two episodes, to return in the later stages where he would die on a beach evoking ''Film/DeathInVenice''. Ultimately, he survived the series.
** In #40, the ''Timeranger'' tribute, Honami Moriyama and her son Mirai were not part of the original draft. It was only when Shuhei Izumi was secured to reprise his role as Domon (Time Yellow) that director Noboru Takemoto incorporated them in to give Domon his FullyAbsorbedFinale.
** Early info for ''Gokaiger vs. Gavan'' said that [[spoiler:Warz Gil]] would appear in the Makuu Castle prison scene, but this turned out to be false, presumably because it would be a PlotHole for [[spoiler:Zangyack's own prince]] to be there.
** Whilst Don sharing his name with the long-dead BigBad of ''Series/SpaceSheriffGavan'' ended up being PlayedForLaughs in ''Gokaiger vs. Gavan'', it was apparently considered at one point that he would be infact be the grandson of Don Horror.
** For the ''Kakuranger'' tribute...
*** The pamphlet for ''199 Hero Great Battle'' states that Ninjaman was among the giant army which fell to the Zangyack fleet. This was overwritten by the ''Kakuranger'' tribute which established that Ninjaman missed the Legend War.
*** The return of Tsuruhime (Ninja White) was a very last-minute affair. Utsunomiya inserted a cameo by an unidentified Kakuranger in the final script for #45, and it was only after that that Satomi Hirose was secured to reprise her role.
*** Ninjaman was initially planned to turn into a Ranger Key (which was realised in the toyline post-''Gokaiger''), but Junko Komura changed this to him fighting alongside the Gokaigers as the Greater Power of the Kakurangers.
** Initially, only ''Sun Vulcan's'' Takayuki Hiba ([=VulEagle=]) was to grant the Gokaigers approval to use the five Greater Powers that had been stolen by Basco. Noboru Takemoto insisted that all of the five Sentai be represented and so invited their actors to return.
** Dyrandoh was originally planned to be killed off in #50, the penultimate episode, but in the end he made it to the first half of the finale.
** ''Ten Gokaiger'' would originally have featured an AlternateSelf of [[Series/KikaiSentaiZenkaiger Kaito Goshikada who had never found himself in the unique situation of ''Zenkaiger'' Kaito and so never became Zenkaiser]], but Arakawa couldn’t think of a way to feature him without overcoming the ContinuityLockout caused by Zenkaiger’s multiverse premise.
* WordOfGod: As stated by Koichi Sakamoto, the episodes he directed (namely 5 and 6) have ''Franchise/PowerRangers'' references.
** In episode 5, when the four Gokaigers become Go-ongers, Gokai Yellow used the wheel designed armbands of the Go-onger suit as a weapon, which is exclusively used in ''Series/PowerRangersRPM''.
** Episode 5 also had the Gokai Change to Dekaranger have more of an homage to ''Series/PowerRangersSPD's'' morph than ''Dekaranger's''.
** The entire scene when Elder is discovered in #8 pretty much homages a similar scene in [[Series/PowerRangersRPM RPM's]] "Handshake", even substituting billiards for baseball.
** Most of the time, when the Magiranger powers are used, Ahim will use Vida's 'big pink tornado of windy doom' technique rather than Houka's 'turn into something small and cutesy' technique, though it could be Ahim simply having a different personality from Houka.
* WordOfSaintPaul: According to Tetsu Inada, [=DekaMaster=]’s actor, the reason why his character was seen with [[Series/GekisouSentaiCarranger Carranger’s]] Signalman in the finale is that S.P.D.’s Earth Branch was looking after whatever inanimate object he turned into after the Legend War.
* YouSoundFamiliar: The Mobilates is voiced by none other than [[Creator/TomokazuSeki Suneo himself]].
