!!The 10 Hunter Commandments, from the series itself:
* 1) Hunters must hunt something.
* 2) All Hunters require a minimum level of martial proficiency. Being able to use Nen is the minimum level necessary.
* 3) No matter what may happen, one who has become a Hunter will never have their title revoked. However, no matter the circumstances, a Hunter License will never be issued a second time.
* 4) Hunters may not hunt their fellow Hunters, except for those who have committed atrocities.
* 5) Hunters who achieve extraordinary accomplishments in certain fields will receive a star.
* 6) Veteran Hunters who have received a star, become superior officers and have had their students receive stars will receive two stars.
* 7) Hunters with two stars who achieve extraordinary accomplishments in multiple fields will receive three stars.
* 8) If the Hunter in charge does not receive a minimum level of support, then they will have their post removed. In this case, the minimum level is support from the majority of his fellow Hunters. If the seat of chairman becomes open, an election for the next chairman must happen immediately. The vice-chairman is to be left in charge until the new chairman is decided.
* 9) The chairman decides how the new Hunters are chosen. But in order to make a great change in the existing method, he must not receive support from the majority.
* 10) Everything not written here is to be decided by the chairman, vice-chairman, and their advisers. The chairman has the right to choose who becomes the vice-chairman and advisers.

!General
* CastingGag: Chrollo Lucilfer, who conjures his stolen Nen abilities as a notebook, is voiced in the 2011 anime by Creator/MamoruMiyano -- Miyano previously played Light Yagami in ''Manga/DeathNote''. The manga would later make this gag more explicit, with Shizuku refering to Chrollo's notebook as a Death Note.
* ChildrenVoicingChildren: The Brazilian Portuguese dub for the movies featured two teenage boys voicing the characters Gon and Killua, who were respectively 15 and 13 years old at the time. Pairo in ''Phantom Rouge'' was voiced by a then-13 years-old as well in the dub.
* CreatorBreakdown:
** Long rumored to affect the author, particularly the arcs that appeared to be sketchbook work. At least a couple of breaks have been confirmed to be due to a literal physical breakdown causing health issues such as chest pain.
** Togashi's [[CreativeDifferences experience]] writing ''Manga/YuYuHakusho'' have also seemed to play a role in the direction ''Hunter x Hunter'' has gone. Namely, the rotating cast of characters and the {{Deconstruction}} of Gon's character during the Chimera Arc. The latter of which [[WhatCouldHaveBeen Togashi wanted to do with Yusuke]] in ''[=YuYu=] Hakusho''.
** Togashi's comments in the author's section of ''Magazine/ShonenJump'' in 2016 are downright depressing and sorrowful, with him complaining about being in pain and generally miserable. It's no surprise he went back on hiatus sometime later.
* CrossDressingVoices:
** Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and many other male characters are voiced by women in Japanese.
** Gon is voiced in French by voice actresses, namely Creator/NathalieBienaime in the 1999 series and Creator/JackieBerger in the 2011 series.
** In the Latin American Spanish dub of the 2011 series, Mexican voice actress Susana Moreno voice Gon. Averted with the one from the 1999 series, which was voiced by a male one, the Colombia-born Leonardo Salas. Likewise, the dub of the 2011 series has Kurapika voiced by a male voice actor, David Ramos.
* {{Defictionalization}}: Want to test your skills playing Gungi but you missed out on the ones released with the [[https://japanimedia-ex.com/rare-hunter-x-hunter-gungi-board-game-of-chimera-ant-japan-anime-manga/ Japanese blu-ray set]] years ago? There's now an [[https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2022-02-16/hunter-x-hunter-gungi-board-game-gets-1st-official-real-life-set/.182680 official Gungi game set]] finally available for sale to the public, with actual rules implemented.
* DuelingWorks: With ''Manga/ShamanKing.'' Both started publication the same year (with ''Hunter x Hunter'' predating it by three months), they both have a magic rule set that allows them to turn everyday objects into deadly weapons, and they both have the hero's friendly rival being a child raised by a family of assassins.
* ExtremelyLengthyCreation:
** As of 2022, Yoshihiro Togashi has been drawing it for 24 years and is still not finished. It is not a particularly lengthy series compared to its ''Magazine/ShonenJump'' brethren, but rather, Togashi took so many long breaks, with its current and longest hiatus lasting 41+ months (as of April 2022), that it has taken this long to make it.
** As of 2022, even though the series is not nearly as long as typical LongRunner, it's currently the only pre-2010 manga besides ''Manga/OnePiece'' to still be serialized in ''Weekly Shounen Jump'', making ''Hunter x Hunter'' the second oldest series that is currently in ''WSJ''. If you compare its age with other series running in ''WSJ'', ''Manga/MyHeroAcademia'' (2014) is the third oldest with the rest premiering from 2015 on.
* GodNeverSaidThat: There's a persistent rumor spreading around that Creator/NaokoTakeuchi will continue working on the manga if something happens to Togashi that even [[https://www.ecumenicalnews.com/article/hunter-x-hunter-chapter-361-rumors-togashi-wife-collaborate-to-finish-long-overdue-chapter/53893.htm news articles]] and [[https://www.mobilenapps.com/articles/36071/20170129/hunter-x-returns-february-creator-togashis-wife-takeuchi-reportedly-assigned-write-next-chapter.htm fansites]] picked up on, yet there's no official interview of Togashi or her confirming they said this. She ''was'' an assistant to Togashi doing screentone in the early days of the manga before their marriage, which might have been the basis of the rumor, but she left due to the heavy workload and to focus on ''Manga/SailorMoon''.
* NoExportForYou: Those who want to watch the 3 [=OVAs=] (1 finishing the Yorknew arc, the other 2 adapting the Greed Island arc) related to the 62-episode TV series are out of luck, since due to a combination of poor [=DVD=] sales of the 62 episode TV series, as well as Viz Media licensing and dubbing the 2011 adaptation (Which not only covered all the content adapted in the TV series, but also covered the content in the [=OVAs=], as well as the Chimera Ant and Chairman Election arcs), Viz has all but officially announced they aren't going to license it. The Italian, French, and Latin American distributors, however, licensed and dubbed all three [=OVAs=] into their respective languages.
* TheOtherDarrin: A good chunk of the cast was changed between series.
** While a majority of the dub cast stayed for the entire duration of the 2011 series, two characters were recast:
*** Gotoh in his first three appearances was voiced by Dave Mallow. Following Mallow’s retirement, Joe J. Thomas takes over in his later appearances.
*** Bloster/Brovada was first voiced by Chris Cason in the first half of the Chimera Ant Arc before Creator/JoeZieja takes over.
*** The mysterious announcer (actually Prince Baka Ki El Dogra from another Creator/YoshihiroTogashi series, ''Manga/LevelE'') is voiced by Takuma Suzuki and David W. Collins instead of Creator/DaisukeNamikawa[[note]]Who wouldn’t have been hard to get back since he already voices Hisoka.[[/note]] and Creator/VicMignogna.
** In Brazil, at first the movies got a dub [[SequelFirst before the 2011 TV series]] because of different licensing reasons. However, when the series become finally dubbed in the language, the entire cast were changed. (the movies were casted in Rio de Janeiro while the series was in São Paulo, but even without the 1999 cast also recorded in São Paulo, since Viz requested it [[CreatorsApathy while they totally ignored the existence of the movies' dubs]])
* PlayingAgainstType:
** 1999 Version
*** Creator/{{Tarako}} voices Melody in a gentle soft-spoken voice instead of a cutesy {{moe}}-like voice that she does for other characters she voiced.
** 2011 Version
*** Creator/MatthewMercer who usually voices serious and/or sarcastic badasses with deep voices, plays Leorio.
*** Creator/CristinaValenzuela, Creator/ErikaHarlacher, and Creator/KiraBuckland normally provide the voices of several different female characters. Here they portray Killua, Kurapika and Zushi respectively which are considered to be the first time they portray boy characters.
* RealLifeRelative: Creator/MegumiHan and her mother Creator/KeikoHan play Gon and [[ParentalSubstitute Aunt Mito]] in the 2011 version.
* SeriesHiatus: Several, leading the more cynical readers to refer to the series as "Hiatus x Hiatus". At ~390 chapters to 2019, it would be quite the mental task to determine how long the series would have been ''without'' the hiatuses. That is, were it not for [[https://hiatus-hiatus.github.io/ this]]. As of 2022, the series has actually been on hiatus for more of its run than it hasn't. Its current hiatus of 156+ skipped issues of ''Magazine/ShonenJump'' missed is the manga's longest ever.
* JustForFun/SurprisinglySimilarStories: On a meta-level, ''Hunter x Hunter'' and ''Literature/ASongOfIceAndFire'' have a number of striking similarities. Both are critically-acclaimed deconstructions of their respective genres with vocal online fandoms whose size increased exponentially upon the airing of a popular television adaptation but are now perhaps best-known for their veteran creators' chronic ScheduleSlip and the growing fear of their fans that the series will never be completed.
* TroubledProduction:
** Creator/YoshihiroTogashi's chronic pain ''really'' started to get worse during the making of the manga, and would eventually lead to many chapters having to be released [[OffModel in sketch form]] and the [[ExtremelyLengthyCreation infamously long and frequent hiatuses]] as Togashi became increasingly physically disabled. His current condition forces him to draw ''lying down''.
** The Colombian Spanish dub suffered of many problems during its production: Besides of having a very irregular quality, the script of the dub was ''plagiarized'' from a fansub, complete with [[TooLongDidntDub honorifics and all]]. ''Unlike'' what happened with the other Latin American dubs who used plagiarized scripts (like the Mexican Spanish dubs of the first ''Manga/CaseClosed'' movies, who were caught red-handed with this), they dubbed '''the whole first TV series and the [=OVAs=]''' with those scripts with no problems whatsoever with the Japanese licensors, who normally are very strict about using non-official translations for dubs.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Brendan Hunter, the dub actor for Hisoka in the 99' anime, expressed interest in reprising the role for Viz's dub of the 2011 version. Considering his performance was seen as a highlight of that particular dub, it would've been interesting to say the least. Unfortunately, Viz decided to play it safe and cast Creator/KeithSilverstein instead. Hunter does, however, play Hisoka in ''[[WebVideo/HaXHa HA x HA]]'', an AbridgedSeries.
** Togashi mentioned in a discussion after returning from his Hiatus in 2017 that he originally planned for [[spoiler:Machi to also get killed by Hisoka, alongside Shalnark and Kortopi, after his fight with Chrollo. Togashi decided to leave her as a survivor because he felt the narrative would have better stakes if she returned to the Phantom Troupe as a messenger.]]
** Reportedly, Studio Madhouse had originally planned on making the 2011 anime a 26-episode seasonal anime, hence the 2 recap episodes early on[[note]]presumably, this would've accounted for the constant hiatuses, so assuming Togashi wrote content whenever the anime was in between seasons, they would've been able to avoid filler as much as possible[[/note]]. However, they eventually decided to make the series a long-runner, resulting in the finished project.
** In the Otakon 22 convention, Mariya Ise said that she was considered to voice Killua with another unknown voice actress. At the time, she was confirmed for the role because she answered the call from the anime sound manager Chiaki Yamada. If she didn't get the call, the other voice actress would have been the other candidate as she was the first choice. Lucky for Ise, the other actress didn't bother to pick up her phone.
** Turns out that the 1999 adaptation would have had an anime only ending with two extra episodes where Kurapika and Chrollo would have a final duel to the death with both of them dying in the process setting their score, and with Kurapika dying in Leorio's arms. Seen right [[https://hunterxhunter.fandom.com/wiki/Talk:List_of_Episodes_(1999_series) here]]
