Context Trivia / GrandTheftAutoV

Go To

* AccentDepundent: There's a jetski manufacturer named "Speedophile", a pun that only works with the British pronunciation of "pedophile".
* ActorInspiredElement:
** Trevor's initial backstory was that he grew up in the rural American backwoods. However, when Canadian actor Steven Ogg was hired to voice the character, the producers decided to work Ogg's thick Canadian accent into the character. As a result, Trevor's origins were changed and the character was now purported to have grown up "near the Canadian border". Trevor's Canadian origins are something of an in-joke throughout the game, as numerous characters express anti-Canadian sentiment.
** Ogg also came up with the idea of Trevor trying and failing to jump over Denise's fence in "Fresh Meat", which Rockstar liked enough to implement in to the game proper. Many thought that the scene was actually a case of ThrowItIn, before Ogg clarified what had actually happened.
* ActorSharedBackground: If this [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67nHCfm0aK0 Vlad TV interview]] is to be believed, Slink Johnson does indeed have a lot of commonalities with his character Lamar, particularly their experience with carjacking and petty theft. Fellow GTA V actor Shawn Fonteno also had a rap sheet in real life as well, having been involved with the Crips in his early life much like Franklin was involved with the Families in this game.
* AdoredByTheNetwork: When ''Grand Theft Auto Online'' surpassed the game's single-player mode, Rockstar almost completely dropped their support of the latter in favor of the former with the ill-gotten gains update being the last one that had most of its content added to story mode in the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions while the next generation consoles had more extra content added to story mode if players had a Rockstar Social Club account and were returning from that generation. Later updates after this has their content almost exclusive to Online, but certain exceptions such as Lowriders adding the Machete to both V and Online while radio stations were still added to V all the way to The Diamond Casino Heist with music that was released after 2013 when the game took place timeline wise.
* ApprovalOfGod:
** Shawn Fonteno, the former rapper and actor who played Franklin, [[https://www.instagram.com/p/CJT_2Y5nyj_/ reuploaded]] a [[MemeticMutation parody]] video of his character being roasted by Kermit the Frog, showing his approval of the meme.
** Slink Johnson (Lamar) watched a bunch of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7wU1r_TrOI Lamar Roasts Franklin memes]] and clearly had a fun time sitting through every one of them. He even got in on the action by appearing on [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cU0oHq9Y6Ws a "real life" version of the meme]] alongside Fonteno. His personal favorite is "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSQ2cZrhnsQ Everybody Roasts Franklin]]". He also [[https://www.instagram.com/p/CJtZ7uMsf98/ voiced]] his approval in an Instagram post.
* AuthorsSavingThrow: ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoIV'''s missions were criticized for being repetitive in their nature, a lot of them having Niko being told to chase and assassinate someone with little variation. Rockstar addressed this with a wide plethora of missions, particularly with the heists. The assassination missions proper were reduced to being optional but with high payouts, particularly with manipulating the stock market.
* BannedInChina:
** A mild example for eighth gen when the Australian branches of Target and Kmart[[note]]Both owned by [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wesfarmers Wesfarmers]] (whose company policy bans R-Rated content anyway) and unrelated to the American chains aside from licensing the names[[/note]] both chose not to stock the game after an uproar caused by [[https://www.change.org/p/target-withdraw-grand-theft-auto-5-this-sickening-game-encourages-players-to-commit-sexual-violence-and-kill-women this petition,]] which claims that the game rewards players for committing acts of sexual violence against women (killing escorts after using their services, etc.)
** The gambling elements of the GTA Online Diamond Casino and Resort update are, banned in Belgium, which is usually the first country to ban things that promote underage gambling like LootBoxes. In other countries (e.g. Germany), players are not allowed to gamble any in-game currency bought with [[BribingYourWayToVictory Shark Cards]] (the game has a system in place to tell the difference). This is also apparently the case in the Middle East: The casino minigames are all off limits to the players, and the private gambling area part of the penthouse is walled off, but everything else is available.
* CastTheExpert: Rockstar Games hired [[http://www.destructoid.com/actual-gang-members-bring-grand-theft-auto-v-to-life-261231.phtml actual gang members]] to voice some of the side characters, and they often rewrote the dialogue when it seemed unrealistic. They also allowed Shawn Fonteno and Slink Johnson to improvise most of their lines, as they knew more than anyone how black gangbangers on the West Coast would talk in real life.
** The Next-Gen version has a variation. All the new songs added to the game were handpicked by their respective [=DJs=], instead of Rockstar themselves. Meaning that Cara picked the new songs for Non-Stop Pop, Loggins picked the new songs for Los Santos Rock Radio, DJ Pooh picked the new songs for West Coast Classics, etc.
** Real gangbangers were also called upon to graffiti up memorials of fellow members who have died.
* ContentLeak: In late December 2023 the [[https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/cyber-security/purported-gta-5-source-code-distributed-on-telegram-data-spill-comes-a-year-after-the-lapsusdollar-rockstar-smash-and-grab source code]] for the PC version of ''GTA V'' leaked on the dark web. Said source archive appears to contain code for the single-player portion of the game and the associated mission logic, and is even [[https://twitter.com/PC_clown/status/1739628774587605076/photo/1 compilable]] according to a Twitter user. Interestingly enough, the leaked sources also hint at what Rockstar could have done had they not turn ''GTA Online'' into a cash cow, i.e. code for the cancelled single-player DLC (most of which was later recycled as missions for GTA Online) and even an expansion set in Liberty City.
* CreatorBacklash: While he initially enjoyed playing the character and obliging fan requests relating to him, Creator/StevenOgg implied [[https://gamerant.com/grand-theft-auto-5-trevor-actor-steven-ogg-cameo/ in a Cameo he sent to a fan in 2022]] that he's since become disillusioned with being known as Trevor Phillips over the years, noting how he felt that the character was a "cartoon", and expressed annoyance that people were asking him to send messages to people while in-character rather than AsHimself as an actor. As detailed in IAmNotSpock below, Ogg no longer wishes to reprise his role of Trevor in any capacity due to his negative experiences.
** A smaller scale example with Ned Luke. Michael's signature line "You forget a thousand things everyday. Make sure this is one of them." was assumed to be his favorite line, but Ned confirmed on his [=TikTok=] that he actually hated it because of the way it was written.
* DawsonCasting:
** Shawn Fonteno was 42 years old when he played the role of Franklin, who is 25 during the events of the game. By comparison, Steven Ogg, who plays Trevor, is five years younger than Fonteno, and only slightly younger than his character Trevor.
** Lamar Davis, who is also 25, is played by Slink Johnson, who was 40 at the time of the game's release.
** Danny Tamberelli (aged 31) and Michal Sinnott (aged 36) were a over a decade older than Jimmy (aged 20) and Tracey (aged 22) respectively.
* {{Defictionalization}}: In collaboration with West Coast Customs, [[http://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/51297/rockstar-and-west-coast-customs-present-the-2013-gtav-bravado-ba.html Rockstar has created a real Bravado Banshee]] - the GTA equivalent of a Dodge Viper.
* DevelopmentGag:
** After paying a visit to [[spoiler:Martin Madrazo]] for a job, Trevor thinks that Michael brought him to a big fancy house to case it so they can rob it and its homeowner later, which Michael repeatedly tells him that they weren't there to do that. A cut heist (see WhatCouldHaveBeen below) called "The Sharmoota Job" had Michael and Trevor disguised as clowns or mimes to rob said house during a party.
** Before the mission Cadia Libre, Michael texts Franklin saying that he was going to [[spoiler:Martin Madrazo's]] house to discuss a job and [[spoiler:Martin]] wanted Franklin in on it but Michael convinced him to use Trevor instead. A pre-release screenshot of the mission showed Franklin on a dirtbike chasing the plane, suggesting he was going to be in the mission before being replaced during development with Trevor.
** One Diamond Casino and Resort mission has Ms. Baker sarcastically noting that it "only took five years" for the casino to open. Players who dug through the game files found unused dialog that suggested [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbifEfTm0Yw&t=2m the Casino was intended to be available right from the start of the game]], along with the Maze Bank (which, in turn, was made available via the Arena Wars update).
* DubNameChange: In the Polish version Stretch's nickname was translated to DÅ‚ugas (''Longy''), likely because of the potential loanword connotations with stretch wrap.
* DuelingGames:
** With ''VideoGame/SaintsRowIV'', which came out a month before. Despite ''Saints'' selling well and getting positive reviews, ''GTA'' completely trounced it, both in reception and sales.
** ''Saints Row'' still got a good one over by releasing the "GAT V" DLC on the same day as the console release, making a stand for PC gamers by offering it for free on that day. (Also eventually by having the expansion and the bundled next gen port out before ''GTA'' reached the PC).
** One year later, the Next-Gen port of GTA V competed with ''VideoGame/FarCry4'' as both are open-world games being released on the same day.
** 2021 saw Rockstar butting heads with the aforementioned ''Saints Row'' franchise again, this time with ''GTA V'' getting an UpdatedRerelease for [[MediaNotes/TheNinthGenerationOfConsoleVideoGames ninth generation consoles]] less than half a year after ''VideoGame/SaintsRowTheThird'' got its own re-release.
* DummiedOut: ''Princess Robot Bubblegum'' and its voice actors are credited in the 7th Gen version of the game, even though the actual content would only become available a full year later on the 8th Gen UpdatedRerelease of the game.
** Radio playlists that include songs never added into the game, as well as files for an entire cut radio station, can be found in the game's files.
* DyeingForYourArt:
** Ned Luke put on 25 pounds to help get into character for Michael.
** Steven Ogg would sometimes strip down to his underwear to get more in character while recording Trevor's lines.
* EditedForSyndication: Just like how the online component for ''VideoGame/RedDeadRedemption2'' locks out the poker mini-game for players from countries with strict gambling regulations, the gambling functions for ''GTA Online's'' Diamond Casino are also locked out for those same players.
* LyingCreator
** Shortly after the game's announcement, Rockstar stated that like in ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoIV'', you would not be able to purchase property. That element has since been confirmed. Although, this was most likely done so Rockstar wouldn't spoil any gameplay until they were ready to announce it.
** After ''specifically'' stating that [[spoiler:[[VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoIV Packie McReary]] wouldn't be in the game, who should appear? Packie.]]
** Before ''Grand Theft Auto V'' was originally released on the [=PS3=] and Xbox 360, Rockstar specifically said that it would not be released on next-gen consoles. Come E3 2014, and GTA V was announced for both consoles, with many improvements, additions, and enhancements.
* IAmNotSpock: Creator/StevenOgg has grown tired of being associated with Trevor and fans pestering him to berate them or say various things relating to the GTA universe while in character. Because of this, he declined to return for follow-up stories in ''Online'' and the Fooliganz were created to take his place.
* IronyAsSheIsCast: Throughout the game, Michael frequently expresses hatred of yoga instructors, in part because his wife is cheating on him with some of them. It's funny once you consider that Ned Luke, Michael's voice actor, is currently married to a yoga instructor.
* MemeAcknowledgement: Shawn Fonteno (Franklin) and Slink Johnson (Lamar) eventually got together to recreate the memetic "Lamar Roasts Franklin" scene [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cU0oHq9Y6Ws in live action]]. Rockstar themselves would homage the scene in ''The Contract Update'' in ''Videogame/GrandTheftAutoOnline''.
* MultiDiscWork: ''GTA V'' had two discs on Xbox 360. The PC version, which was a port of the [=PS4=]/Xbox One versions, had ''seven''.
* NoCommunitiesWereHarmed: The game's locale plays this straight in regards to Los Angeles and its surrounding areas, but it was inadvertently subverted due to the Edinburgh-based Rockstar North's PatrioticFervor for Scotland. A councillor from Hawick was [[https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-south-scotland-24142883 far from happy]] that a district in the game [[ShoutOut shared its name]] with the town.
* OfficialFanSubmittedContent:
** If Rockstar Games approves of a player-created race or deathmatch map made with their LevelEditor, it will become "Rockstar Verified" and easily accessible in-game to everyone playing ''Online''. Additionally, they regularly feature videos and crews made by members of the Social Club community on their website.
** A fan-made patch by a modder going under the pseudonym t0st which cut down on loading times in the PC version of ''GTA Online'' was incorporated by Rockstar in a March 2021 title update. Besides being [[https://support.rockstargames.com/articles/360061161574/GTAV-Title-Update-1-53-Notes-PS4-Xbox-One-PC mentioned]] on their official support page, t0st also received a $10,000 cash reward for his findings.
* PopCultureUrbanLegends: It was believed for a long time that Trevor tripping over the fence he hops over in "Fresh Meat" was an accident, and that Franklin bursting out laughing at the event was actually Shawn Fonteno corpsing, resulting in Steven Ogg improvising Trevor getting angry at Franklin in response. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8LTaeBs82c&t=2240s Ogg clarified that this wasn't the case at a Comic Con London panel in 2018]], as the work with the motion-capture equipment made it next to impossible to improvise much of anything, much less falling down.
* PromotedFanboy: Hannibal Buress has said in the past that he's a big GTA fan, and even [[https://youtu.be/EIxY27x3Y1Q?t=2m7s did a bit]] about ''IV'' in his stand-up; ironically, he got his cameo on [=FlyLo=] FM from Flying Lotus himself being a big fan of Hannibal's comedy.
* RevivalByCommercialization: Any song featured in trailers.
** "Radio Ga Ga" by Music/{{Queen}} was already highly popular, but after the Michael trailer it surged in popularity, with most of the comments for it on Website/YouTube being related to this game.
** "Hood Gone Love It" by Music/JayRock and Music/KendrickLamar. Its views on Website/YouTube tripled in less than a week after being featured in the Franklin trailer.
** Any song featured on the in-game radio stations count. Find any one of the songs from any of the stations on [=YouTube=], guaranteed you will find someone, sometimes the top comment, saying they first heard it on ''GTA''.
* RoleReprise:
** Nearly every [[Characters/GrandTheftAutoVCharactersFromGrandTheftAutoIV character who appeared in GTA IV or its episodes]] were voiced by their original voice actor. The only [[TheOtherDarrin exception]] is Al Di Napoli.
** The voice actors for Cris Formage, Jack Howitzer, and Fernando Martinez, who all appeared in ''GTA San Andreas'', reprise their roles for GTA V.
** Agent ULP was initially reprised by ''Creator/MiltonJames'' in the single player game; however, in the ''Doomsday Heist'' update, Agent ULP is voiced by Jeff Steitzer, due to James suffering a stroke and subsequently dying from its complications.
* ScheduleSlip:
** The original version of the game was slated for a Spring 2013 release, before being delayed to September 17 of the same year.
** The 9th generation re-releases were initially planned to release in late 2021, before being delayed to March 2022.
* StarMakingRole: Following his acclaimed performance as Trevor, Steven Ogg landed roles in ''Series/BetterCallSaul'' and ''Series/TheWalkingDead''.
* ScrewedByTheLawyers: In the original Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game, the menus for the Lucky Pluckers restaurant actually show stickers for the real life drinks Sprite, Fanta, and Barq's. In the enhanced versions of the game, these were only able to be seen in the Little Seoul branch of the restaurant before a later patch removed them entirely. This was likely done in order for Rockstar to avoid a lawsuit by those brands.
* ThrowItIn:
** In a more serious example, Madrazo's actor Alfredo Huereca miscalculated his swing with a soft bat during the mission Marriage Counselling and managed to hit Ned Luke in the elbow with the wooden part of it. This take is used in the final version of the game, making Michael's reaction real.
** Much of Franklin and Lamar's dialogue in the game was heavily improvised by both Shawn Fonteno and Slink Johnson, particularly with their slang since they were dissatisfied with Rockstar's use of the word "mate" in place of the N-word.
** In the mission "Did Somebody Say Yoga?", Michael's line "Nama-go fuck yourself." to Fabien was improvised by Ned Luke, who also cited it as one of his favorite lines.
* TechnologyMarchesOn: Michael and the Online Protagonist's iFruits were changed in the UpdatedRerelease to match the latest iPhone hardware and software.
* UrbanLegendOfZelda: For a while, there persisted a rumor that there was never meant to be a Golden Ending, instead Ending C would end [[spoiler: with the death of Franklin.]] This rumor was never substantiated, however.
* {{Vaporware}}: In a way. A single-player DLC was teased for a while after the game launched, but eventually just disappeared. Some leaked details from 2014 involved something named "Clifford" which at the tile many believed to be a new city - the ''Doomsday Heist'' would later use the name for an A.I. It is commonly believed that this DLC (and any other potential single-player DLC) were simply scrapped and converted to Online content.
* WagTheDirector: Rockstar really wanted to avoid using the n-word and tried to use "mate" as an alternative in the dialogue. However, Shawn Fonteno and Slink Johnson, who played Franklin and Lamar, pointed out that real gangsters really do make liberal use of the n-word and kept using it during recording sessions so that there were no sanitized alternatives that could be used.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** In 2012, a radio station called Nightride FM was announced by {{Music/Kavinsky}} on his Twitter, and was stated to be hosted by him. It seems to have been completely cut and is not even mentioned in the final game - or Kavinsky lied about it ever existing.
** Vinewood Boulevard Radio was originally going to be "P.M.R", a 90's rock station similar to Radio X in San Andreas, and hosted by [[Music/NineInchNails Trent Reznor]]. It was cut and replaced with the modern rock station we have in the final version, but this change seems to have been a late one as the P.M.R station logo is still in the game files.
** Worldwide FM was a jazz station before it became a world music one. This and the above example are referred to in the game files as "Jazz" and "90's Rock" stations respectively.
** [[VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoIV Brucie Kibbutz]] was originally supposed to have a slightly larger role in the game, as one of the targets in Devin Weston's car theft ring in a scrapped story mission known as "Social Networking" where the player would have to steal his red Stinger by luring him with a prostitute. While most references to that mission have been removed, the car the player was originally supposed to steal (a red vintage Stinger convertible) is present as a sixth car on the Packer in "Pack Man", despite Devin only asking for five cars.
** There was going to be a heist called "The Sharmoota Job" that would have involved robbing Martin Madrazo's mansion and stealing a safe, his prized horse and [[spoiler:Patricia Madrazo, his wife]]. It would have involved Michael and Trevor and have three options for how it would have been performed with one option being them dressing up as mimes, one involved them dressing up as clowns, and the third one had them pretend to be a gay couple with this option actually having some lines left in the game with most of them belonging to Trevor while referring to Michael as "Albert". In the final game this is reduced to Trevor [[spoiler:kidnapping Madrazo's wife off-screen, with Michael being unhappy about it when he finds out]], partly because the horse riding mechanism from ''VideoGame/RedDeadRedemption'' couldn't be implemented into the game.
** As mentioned above, Horses were supposed to be one of the animals encountered in the game, but we're cut due to the aforementioned mechanism from Red Dead Redemption being unable to be implemented in the game. Some leftovers of horses being in the game are still present, such as one shown on one of the many TV programs and one being shown in one of the in-game movies.
** Similarly, the Paleto Score had a second option that was abandoned.
** A design document and later a major leak across Rockstar Games confirmed that Single Player was to have 8 DLC packs; One continuing the default GTA experience which was actually teased along with the Heists update for Online and was known to contain even more flight school missions with its name implied to be "Assassination Pack" which would have added 12 more assassination missions for Franklin after the missions for "Agent Trevor" we're completed, one known as "Prologue DLC" which would have seen the player return to Luddendorf, North Yankton and take place before the prologue of the original game, one known as "Agent Trevor" with 2 3 missions where Trevor would work with the IAA to steal a submarine and stop a rich billionaire named Clifford and later Rob the casino at the very end, an expansion where the player could return to Liberty City from the previous game with early screenshots showing what it would look like, a DLC themed around one of Rockstar's other game series "Manhunt", a relationship DLC, an enterprise DLC, one which featured aliens cracking open a mountain and starting a full-scale invasion with a ship hidden inside (The mural is believed to connect to it) and a Next Gen only Zombie DLC titled "Norman" in the sorce code. The latter two would have featured changes to the map, such as destroyed buildings, walled off Los Santos and campsites on the countryside. They were scrapped after Leslie Benzies left Rockstar Games and they were forced to reorganize their internals, with the GTA Online creators being the only unaffected. Modders have unearthed what seems to be a DLC select with the options "GTA" "Trevor" and "Dead". Rockstar [[WordOfGod eventually revealed]] that the main reason the singleplayer DLC's were scrapped was the growing interest in GTA Online and the then unannounced ''VideoGame/RedDeadRedemption2'', which required a lot of attention from them. This may be technically [[SubvertedTrope subversion]], as a lot of the planned content eventually made it's way to the multiplayer mode, although heavily edited with "Agent Trevor" eventually becoming " The Doomsday Heist" and the finale becoming "The Diamond Casino Heist" only for Trevor's role to be cut out and the enterprise DLC was recycled as "The Business Update".
** The leaked source code for the game revealed that Cluckin Bell and Burger Shot both originally had explorable interiors where you could also order food from, just like you could in ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoIV'', implying that the eating friend activity from that game was originally going to return. They were likely cut due to the game's massive file size which was reaching its limitations on the seventh generation console versions of the game.
** Datamining the game would reveal data for an EOD suit for Franklin that is not used, indicating that he would have had a more active role in the Paleto bank heist as opposed to just organizing the getaway.
** Similarly, Trevor has [[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/gtawiki/images/5/58/TheBureauRaid-GTA5-FiremanT.jpg an unused fireman's uniform]], indicating that "the Bureau Raid" might have taken place before "Bury the Hatchet." The Heist was also called "The Agency Raid" in the beta, implying that the IAA was supposed to be raised instead of the FIB.
** Michael has a police uniform - not the S.A.H.P uniform he wears in "I Fought the Law", but [[https://i.imgur.com/4B1ZycV.jpg that of the L.S.P.D.]] - that is unused.
** Trevor was meant to be an American who grew up in the countryside. When Steven Ogg was picked to voice Trevor, the production team rewrote his backstory to make him Canadian.
** Michael's fake name, ''Michael De Santa'', was chosen after the name ''Albert De Silva'' was used during game production.
** There were originally going to be at least two more missions for Solomon Richards that were cut from the final game. One of these, "Harrier", had Michael steal a jet for Mr. Richards, while the other, simply titled "Save Film Studio", was implied to have Michael defend Richards Majestic Productions from someone who was attacking it.
** Besides the scrapped Heist "The Sharmoota Job", there was also another Heist mission that was scrapped from the final game. Unlike the former however, this Heist mission was never actually given a name, implying that it was cut very early on.
** There was plans for a scrapped mission called "Final Furlong". Besides the name however, there is no other information about what was supposed to happen during this mission, implying that it was cut out very early on.
** According to Shawn Fonteno, in an earlier version of the mission "The Long Stretch", Franklin was the one that originally killed D after he lured the group into a trap. In the actual game, Stretch is the one that kills D instead.
** There was going to be a random event where you encountered a scrapped character, a military officer known as First lieutenant Kyle P. Slater where upon completion, you would receive his phone contact. Interestingly, if you dial his numer 328-555-0145 in the final game, you can still hear his voice mail.
** There are lines from the police dispatch that go unused in the game for other crimes, including prowling, shooting endangered animals, drug deals, and riding a motorcycle without a helmet. Other lines include the dispatch identifying Michael, Franklin, and Trevor by name and appearance, as well as the names of various ''Grand Theft Auto IV'' vehicles that are inaccessible.
** It's heavily implied that you were originally allowed to enter Tequi-la-la outside of the Strangers and Freaks mission "Vinewood Souvenirs - Willie" and play Darts due to the presence of a Darts board as well as the inside of the bar being fully designed and finished. In the final game however, you can only play Darts with your friends at the Yellow Jack Inn all the way in Blaine County.
** It's heavily implied by the presence of the Pool table in the Yellow Jack Inn that Pool was originally planned to return as a minigame and friend activity like in the previous game before it was scrapped. However, the Pool cue was eventually added to "Online" as a melee weapon.
** The Pipe Wrench that Trevor uses in the mission "By The Book" was originally planned to be an actual melee weapon in the game instead of just appearing in the mission only. It was later added to "Online" in a later update.
** Shawn Fonteno came very close to giving up on the game early in production, due to being frustrated with the mocap work for the film, and not understanding what the game was really about (as Rockstar had not told him he was working on a GTA project for secrecy reasons). Thankfully, he was convinced to stay on.
** A pre-release screenshot suggested that Franklin would have chased the downed plane in Caida Libre. In the finished game, he was replaced with Trevor.
** Some phone contacts were cut from the final game, such as one for Chop, which was likely just a placeholder for actual contacts, one for Ashley Butler which implies that she was originally going to have a larger role in the game's story, and the LS Tour Board in the original [=PS3=] and Xbox 360 versions of the game, implying that the wildlife photography challenge was planned for the original release before it was added back in the enhanced versions for returning players who linked their Rockstar Social Club accounts to the game.
** There was another street race known as "Terminal" planned for the game before it was scrapped.
** Sea Races were originally planned to only be available to Franklin in the game like Street Races are before it was later made available to all characters in the final game.
** In the files for the game, there are at least six unused mugshots for bail bonds targets, implying that there was originally ten bail bonds available instead of just the four in the main game.
** A third variant of the Stockade security vans belonging to Bobcat Security was planned for the game before being cut.
** Originally, each character was going to have there own unique mission passed jingle instead of sharing the same one. They are still accessible on the PC version of the game and can be accessed through mods.
** Early screenshots of the game showed more trees and foliage present in locations that didn't have as many in the final game.
** [[spoiler:Michael and Trevor's]] deaths in the non canon endings for the game were originally planned to be much more gruesome than in the final game. [[spoiler:Michael was originally going to fall to his death and drop into a helicopter's blades instead of just hitting the ground while Trevor was supposed to originally crash into a liquid nitrogen storage truck and freeze to death after being forced into it by Michael and Michael would have smashed his frozen body to pieces with his vehicle.]]
** There were going to be profile pictures for Michael,Trevor, and Amanda for the in-game dating website "Hush Smush".
** Slink Johnson confirmed that Lamar Davis was originally planned to have a bigger role in the game than what was shown. However, Johnson got caught up with something else in real life for a few months and Rockstar was forced to move on from what they originally planned for Lamar in order to finish the game while keeping Johnson as the voice of Lamar.
** Multiple Strangers and Freaks missions ended up being cut from the final game. One was another mission for Barry as Franklin where he had to deliver a helicopter full of drugs near Barry's apartment and would have taken place in between the Grass Roots missions "The Pickup" and "The Drag", Two missions for Franklin involving him meeting a character named Dale outside a nightclub with the first mission being him asking Franklin to take photographs of ten hot women around town and send them to him as a sort of Collectibles mission with the second one revealing that Dale was drugging said women and Franklin was drugged by him as well a s had to kill him in order to stop him while still drugged, three missions for Michael where he meets Magenta Andrews with the first mission having her ask him to attain true perfection by buying and wearing high-end clothing in order to be welcomed by her and access the second mission at her house where he is invited in to the sight of a group of elderly people having sex and becoming disturbed in the process where he exists building and calls his shrink for more therapy with the third mission being mostly unknown, and finally five missions for Franklin split between two characters known as Mrs. A and Mrs. B who both have each other where he would help one of them sabotage the other throughout most of the missions with the final mission having both of them confronting and attempting to kill each other with Franklin having the option to either join in the right or watch them kill each other.
* YouSoundFamiliar: Robert Bogue, voice of CorruptCop Steve Haines, previously voiced Troy the Hercules doorman in ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoIVTheBalladOfGayTony''.
