* ActingForTwo: A unique variant: Malcolm Corley and Father Torque are voiced by the same actor... and the only time the two are on-screen at the same time is at the former's ''funeral'', with the latter delivering his ''eulogy''!
* CreatorBreakdown: The original draft for the game had [[spoiler: Ben and Maureen hooking up in the end.]] However, during production, several key members of the creative team had their relationships sour and in a fit of angst, decided to rewrite the ending. Ironically, the game's BittersweetEnding was lauded for being truer to the tone of the rest of the story.
* InMemoriam: The ending credits of the 2017 remastered release dedicate the game to Ben's voice actor Roy Conrad, who succumbed to lung cancer in 2002.
* TheOtherDarrin: Roy Conrad died before sequel ''Hell on Wheels'' went to production, so another VA voiced Ben in the trailer. The game was ultimately never finished, however.
* PlayingAgainstType: While Creator/MarkHamill had already broken away from his most famous role as [[Film/ANewHope Luke Skywalker]] by playing ''WesternAnimation/BatmanTheAnimatedSeries''' ComicBook/TheJoker, here, rather than another maniacal LargeHam, he plays the cold, stoic Adrian Ripburger.
* PopCultureUrbanLegends: Some websites claim Ben's full name is "Reuben" and that he is the older brother of Hoagie from VideoGame/DayOfTheTentacle (note the EdibleThemeNaming). No official source has ever confirmed this to be the case.
* ProductionPosse: It's basically the cast of ''WesternAnimation/BatmanTheAnimatedSeries'' trying something completely new. Bonus points for a Creator/{{Lucasfilm}}-owned company including Mark "Luke Skywalker" Hamill -- as the villain.
* StarMakingRole: ''Bone to Pick'' got a ton of sales out of the game, and made a name of The Gone Jackals.
* ThrowItIn: "Chitlins, Whiskey, and Skirt", in which the singer thanks the Lord for the apocalypse, was just a song composer Peter [=McConnell=] composed on his own and does not actually describe the game world (there was no nuclear holocaust), but even if the lyrics didn't fit, the tone did.
* UnspecifiedRoleCredit: A variation -- voice talent is fully credited, but many of the minor characters are never actually named in-game, so we're left to try to guess (for instance) which of the Rottwheelers is Blotch and which is Sizeable Bill.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Two sequels were meant to be made. ''Payback'' in 2000, but fell through due to key artists leaving and CreativeDifferences. The sequel ''Hell On Wheels'' in 2002, was meant to pick up where the original game left off. However was never finished and likewise cancelled. And with Creator/LucasArts now disbanded, all prospects of a continuation still very low. Though fans are holding out hope Tim Schafer will consider doing it independently.
** According to Tim Schafer, MTV met with him about a potential animated series based on the property, though nothing ever came of it.
** An early storyline involved Maureen and her twin, Tina, that would have mimicked ''Literature/ThePrinceAndThePauper''. Schafer got the names from college friends of his. Eventually Tina the character was dropped entirely.
** The game's iconic soundtrack was originally intended to use Music/{{Soundgarden}}. The Gone Jackals got picked up due to Soundgarden costing far too much for the game's budget to allow.
** At one point, Schafer had an idea for a DreamSequence where players had to work through Ben's mind to help his psyche. While it was eventually scrapped, Schafer eventually [[RefittedForSequel reworked the idea]] into ''VideoGame/{{Psychonauts}}''.
