* [[WordOfGod/DragonBallZAbridged Word of God]]
----
* ActingForTwo: Even though the cast is significantly larger than that of most Abridged Series, multiple performances are still unavoidable.
** Creator/{{Lanipator}} has it the worst, voicing Krillin, Popo, Piccolo, Master Roshi, and Vegeta, where there are multiple cases of them talking to each other. The ''Episode of Bardock'' special sees all the proto Saiyans being voiced by Lani (though with some takes supplied by Kaiser), and the ''Buu Bits'' would add Babidi to his list of roles, where he talks to Vegeta before his Majin transformation.
** Like the original Japanese version, Goku and Gohan share the same voice actor, Creator/MasakoX. He manages to make them so distinct that he can even pull off ''young'' Goku in flashback, who sounds kind of like Gohan but not enough to be mistaken for him. In "Black to the Future", a ''Anime/DragonBallSuper'' short, he plays both Goku and Goku Black in the same scene.
** [=Megami33=] plays Bulma, Puar, and Chiaotzu in the main series, along with baby and Kid Trunks in Season 3 and Buu Bits.
** Recoome and Jeice are both voiced by Ganxingba, who are two members of the Ginyu Force that often talk to each other in the same scene. Gan also plays Tenshinhan of the Z-Fighters and Android 17 during the Cell Saga, though they don't talk to each other as often.
** Alongside [[BreakoutCharacter Nappa]], [=Takahata101=] plays Dende, along with Guru, Mouri, and Porunga, who more often than not talk to each other in a scene throughout the series. Lampshaded by [=KaiserNeko=] in the creator commentary track for Episode 14, noting he plays all the "Green dudes" (referring to the aforementioned Namekians, along with him playing Cell in Season 3 and Guldo of the Ginyu Force). He also takes on the role of Bardock for the two Specials focused on him.
** Creator/KaiserNeko mostly played supporting or peripheral characters before Trunks' arrival, although he ends up talking to himself during scenes with King Kai and Gregory, along with George Takei whenever he interrupts King Kai's telepathic calls. The same happens with Korin and Yajirobe, who live with each other in the former's tower (and were upgraded to a romantic pairing in the Abridged Series). Kaiser does voice his frustration over voicing so many characters with similar sounding voices, including supporting casts.
--->'''Kaiser:''' Why do I voice Burter, Korin, and Yajirobe? Why do I voice those three characters?
** As of ''[=DragonShortZ=]'' and ''Buu Bits'', [[Creator/KimlinhTran Hnilmik]] plays both Chi-Chi and Goten.
*** Simon Robertson plays Majin/Kid Buu and Uub in the Buu Bits.
*** The Supreme Kai Shin and Old Kai are both voiced by Tom Schalk.
*** Ryan Palmer plays both Teen/Adult Gohan and Teen Goten.
*** Alongside Bulma, [=Megami33=] voices Kid Trunks and Pan in Buu Bits.
* ActingInTheDark: Wes "funnywes" Wiggins, who voiced a [=DoorDash=] Driver that got eaten by Buu in the Buu Bits, [[https://twitter.com/funnywes/status/1703202639306015140 stated on her Twitter account]] that she was given her lines alone without any context as to where they would end up.
* ActorSharedBackground: Character aspects of Tenshinhan are shared with his actor, Ganxingba, such as his affinity for fantasy Battleball and Judaism. Lampshaded by Lani and Kaiser, where they note the team gradually "wrote Tien more like Gan."
* ApprovalOfGod: Many of the voice actors of the original English dub of ''Anime/DragonBallZ'' have expressed approval of the series, even quoting the show's lines in-character. [=Takahata101=] was even hired to use his Nappa voice for one of the player voices in ''VideoGame/DragonballXenoverse''. Creator/ChristopherSabat, in particular, is close friends with the team; he's let them crash his panels, he's provided cameos for various videos (under pseudonyms), and he attended the opening of the TFS studio after their successful Patreon campaign.
** In the creator commentary for ''History of Trunks'', Kaiser revealed that Chris Sabat told him that Kaiser's performance as Trunks talking to Goku for the first time was one of the most natural performances of Trunks he had ever heard in his life (to which Kaiser remarked "I will sail on that till I die!"), and Lani also mentioned that Sabat once tweeted that if he died he'd leave the part of Vegeta to Lani in his will, which Lani very much doubts would stand but still finds it high enough praise that he genuinely considered framing the tweet.
*** Also hilariously, in one of the episode Creator Commentaries, Kaiser and Nick recount that Chris Sabat has said to them that the DestructoNookie between Bulma and Vegeta in this series as his personal [[{{Fanon}} headcanon]] as to how they actually conceived Trunks in the actual canon too because the setup and performance of the whole scene is described as ''perfectly in-character'' to Sabat both in Abridged canon and actual ''Dragon Ball'' canon.
** Hell, the TFS cast members that live in Texas have even worked at [=FUNimation=] as voice actors. Chris Sabat even tried to sneak them into the dub of ''Kai: The Final Chapters'' as the filler characters dring the Cell Games Re-enactment until a commercial on Toonami showing part of said scene aired, leaving many people to talk about it on social media and Toei finding out about it in the process, who then forced [=FUNi=] to reuse the audio from the dub of the original non-Kai version for its official airing and English home release, barring an initial digital stream release that still had the unaltered dialogue that got recorded and uploaded to the internet. This caused Lani, Taka, Kaiser, and Masako to get barred for some time from working for [=FUNi=] for some unknown amount of time at Toei's request. A lot of the secondary cast members in Texas still work for them, though.
** Taka revealed on his [=VTuber=] channel and in [[https://youtu.be/r3nSeMJHJ0w?si=mzmYM73vEA0kHLHJ&t=234 the Episode 60 Part 3 Creator Commentary]] that, after getting cast as Cell for ''DBZA'', Creator/DameonClarke met him at a con, dragged him outside, and asked to hear how he intended to play all three forms of Cell. He approved of the first two forms on the spot, but firmly told Taka to make Perfect Cell's voice sound "Less British," even going as far as to have keep demonstrating the voice until it was to his liking. After that exchange, he sincerely complimented Taka's portrayal and said it was awesome to meet him. Dameon Clarke would even quote one of Imperfect Cell's lines from ''DBZA'' in his own voice: "Wanna see me drink this guy?"
* AllStarCast: Imagine the series in its heyday and premiering for the first time: the series boasted a cast list consisting of various Abridgers from all across [=YouTube=], some of whom were working on their own AbridgedSeries while they provided their voices to this one. It can be taken for granted nowadays due to everyone generally being associated with TFS now, but if you were a fan of those individual series the voice actor lineup was practically star-studded. A lot of the other cast members in the third season in particular, such as Creator/AmberLeeConnors and Creator/ChrisGuerrero joined the show before they became regular voice actors at [=FUNimation=].
* AscendedFanon:
** In TFS Plays: ''VideoGame/DragonBallXenoverse'' Episode 32, Lanipator confirms the fan theory that their created character Dumplin is a young (well, [[TimeAbyss younger]]) Mr. Popo.
** In the second TFS Podcast, [=KaiserNeko=] confirms a fan theory about the muffin button: the starship Dr. Briefs built was the same space pod in which Goku first landed on Earth, just massively restored and upgraded. He kept a lot of the original technology without necessarily knowing what it did, and that included the muffin button.
** Many fans wished had TFS continued onwards to the Buu Saga, they'd want to hear Vegeta call Goku "best buddy" when he made his HeroicSacrifice. ''Buu Bits'' fulfills that purpose for WebVideo/TotallyNotMark's review of the Buu Saga.
* {{Blooper}}:
** Near the beginning of the ''Lord Slug'' movie, after Goku and Krillin fire a Kamehameha at the incoming meteor, Bulma asks "It'll work," which Lani and Kaiser confirm the full line is supposed to be "Do you think it'll work" with the clipped audio left in the final product. Both of them note that this was likely due to shifting a piece of music while editing in the Adobe Premiere timeline that caused the first part of the voice line being trimmed.
** In episode 28, when Goku tells Piccolo to look after Gohan and Krillin, Krillin is seen flying away in his Turtle School gi instead of his Freeza Force Armor Vegeta lent him. This mistake was present in the original animation and was at a point before Kaiser got into the practice of having such errors corrected/redrawn, so his solution was to simply use as little of the footage possible and not draw any attention to it.
* ConclusionInAnotherMedium: Though the main show itself got a GrandFinale with the three-part Episode 60 and the epilogue, the Majin Buu Saga remained untouched by the crew due to multiple real life factors resulting in the cancelation of the series, the biggest being burnout and fear of legal wrath from Toei Animation. [[https://twitter.com/teamfourstar/status/1692962822584442921 But then it was announced]] that [=TeamFourStar=] would be collaborating with WebVideo/TotallyNotMark to produce short burst adaptations of multiple Buu Saga scenes titled "Buu Bits" to complement his review of the entire saga. [=MasakoX=] stated that his recording session lasted over ''fifty minutes'', meaning this will be the closest the crew will ever get to adapting the Buu Saga in their signature ''[=DBZA=]'' style.
* CreatorBreakdown: Burnout was cited as one of the major reasons for pulling the plug on the abridging of ''Anime/DragonBallZBojackUnbound'', as well as Season 4 of the show itself.
* CreatorsFavorite: Several team members voice characters they particularly like:
** Creator/{{Lanipator}} has admitted in various gaming streams that Piccolo is one of his favourite characters from ''Dragon Ball'', if not his absolute favourite, and that Piccolo was one of the first roles he auditioned for when ''DBZA'' was in its early stages.
** [=KaiserNeko=] has said many times that Future Trunks is one of his favorite characters. His casting isn't an intentional case of PromotedFanboy; he insists that he auditioned other people for the role, but the team liked his performance the best and pushed for him to play Trunks. It certainly helps that he has a passion for the character.
*** He also really liked writing for Zarbon.
** [=Takahata101=]'s [[https://twitter.com/Takahata101/status/1764455725026161025 favorite role to play in the show was Cell]].
** Creator/MasakoX has stated that Goku is his favourite character.
** Gaxingba's favorite character to voice is Recoome.
** Though he's no longer part of the team, Lani has stated [=Vegeta3986=] is a fan of the underdog characters such as Raditz and Yamcha, hence why he played their roles before his departure from the series. He also based his performance on Creator/JasonGrayStanford in the Saban-Ocean Group's dub of the series.
* CreatorsFavoriteEpisode:
** Taka, Lani, and Kaiser have confirmed that Episode 42 is one of their favorites in terms of writing, because it has a little bit of everything: Gohan acting as a detective, Krillin fawning over 18, the dramatic fusing of Kami and Piccolo, and Cell's introduction.
** During the Creator Commentary for their series, Kaiser states that Episode 24 is one of his favorites in terms of pacing.
** One of Lani's favorite videos that the team has ever produced is their adaptation of ''Lord Slug'', owing it to the memorable moments, jokes, and fight scenes.
** Lani and Kaiser both love their abridged version of ''World's Strongest'', due to it not only being one of their favorite ''Z'' movies in general, but also the jokes and twist on the villain, Dr. Wheelo, that were made in their Abridged version.
** Lani notes that the stretch of Episodes leading to the Cell Games (specifically 54-57) are some of his favorites, due to the amount of downtime that allowed them to write a lot of character-based interaction and humor.
* CreatorsPest: All three of the founding members ''hate'' Icarus the Dragon, to the point that they killed him at the end of every movie he appeared in[[note]]Kaiser noted in the Creator Commentary that he personally hates him the least but still finds how hard Icarus stops the plot in its tracks with his antics infuriating, while Lanipator outright despises him for being an annoying KidAppealCharacter that took away from other people's moments in the movies he appeared in.[[/note]].
** They also went out of their way to kill Mr. Satan's students the instant they show up in the Cell Games, feeling they added nothing.
-->'''Kaiser:''' I'd rather edit them out of every scene they were in than bother to write jokes for them.
* CrossDressingVoices:
** Chiaotzu and Puar are both voiced by [=Megami33=]. She also voices Kid Trunks during the Buu Bits.
** Hnilmik plays Goten in the Buu Bits shorts.
** [[spoiler:Dodoria]] also counts, although you'd be forgiven for not picking up on it.
* TheDanza: A minor example -- one of the Cell Jr's is named Curtis, and thus shares a name with his voice actor [=Takahata101=]. This is because each Cell Jr was named after each voice actor to play Cell, [[AerithAndBob except or Vegeta Jr.]] [[CallBack Jr]].
* DevelopmentHell: The finale of the Cell Saga. Episode 59 was released in June 2017, but the first part of Episode 60 didn't come out until August 31, 2018, with the other two parts coming out on a weekly basis. They were heavily focused on other work at the time, including the dub for ''Manga/{{Hells|Angels}}'', new episodes of ''WebVideo/HellsingUltimateAbridged'', a new season of ''WebAnimation/FinalFantasyVIIMachinabridged'', and a brand new Website/YouTube channel. Some suggested that this was a case of ScrewedByTheLawyers, given their [=YouTube=] channel's frequent struggles with copyright claims from Creator/ToeiAnimation. Either explanation is plausible for the eventual cancellation of the show following Episode 60.
* DisownedAdaptation: If you ''somehow'' haven't noticed, this is very much the case for Toei Animation, who are very much known for hating this series with a ''passion'', mostly through copyright strikes, but also forcing [=FUNimation=] to "greylist" Lani, Taka, Kaiser, and Masako over the Cell Games Re-enactment scene in ''Kai: The Final Chapters''.
* ExecutiveMeddling: Despite their being friends with many of the official ''DBZ'' voice actors, TFS can't cast any of them in {{Role Reprise}}s because of their contracts.
* FakeAmerican: Creator/MasakoX is British, but affects an American accent when playing Goku and Gohan, even though neither of them are American (or even come from a universe where the U.S. exists).
* FlipFlopOfGod:
** In the tenth anniversary stream, when they get to Yamcha's first scene in the first episode, TFS gives conflicting answers about whether or not it was Puar that Yamcha was caught sleeping with when Bulma walked in on him. Lani insists that his and Taka's two votes for it outweigh Kaiser's no.
** The team's stance on whether Episode 60 would serve as the SeriesFinale has gone back and forth. They didn't tip their hand either way until the episode was released. TheStinger makes it explicit that ''DBZA'' would return for season 4 and cover the Buu Saga, and Lani also implied that the team was mulling over doing something with the Otherworld Tournament as well. They went back on that for a number of reasons: copyright issues, [[AttentionDeficitCreatorDisorder wanting to work on other projects]], concern over avoiding SeasonalRot (the Buu Saga was not a high point in the original, and they shut down ''[[Anime/DragonBallZBojackUnbound Bojack Abridged]]'' out of frustration with the source material), adjusting to new production schedules and techniques, and just general burnout. It helped that Episode 60 had a sense of finality to it and was a good place to end it. But they held out hope for a bit, until Scott [[https://www.patreon.com/posts/33758684 finally made it official on Patreon.]]
* GodNeverSaidThat: As mentioned under DevelopmentHell, the series ending after the Cell Saga. There was a lot of speculation in the gap between episodes 59 and 60 as to whether the series would continue after that, and although TFS didn't tip their hand either way ([[https://www.reddit.com/r/TeamFourStar/comments/8npgr0/kaiserneko_here_about_is_episode_60_the_last/ here's Kaiser on Reddit]] saying that the series ending was a "possibility"), fans were convinced that episode 60 would be the end. TheStinger for episode 60 explicitly said that the show ''would'' continue partly to assure the fans of their thinking -- at least until TFS changed their minds and decided to end it after all.
* HireTheCritic:
** Grant Smith (''a.k.a.'' Master Wuggles) hates ''Dragon Ball Z Abridged'' and its style of comedy. However, Team Four Star invited him as guest for their gaming content, and he eventually became a full member of TFS. He would later contribute to ''DBZA'' himself, first by playing [[Anime/PokemonTheSeries Brock and James]] for one of the ''Cell Vs.'' videos, then as a BitCharacter in the last episodes of Season 3 of the series proper. He seems to have softened up to the series a little bit, but he clearly still isn't a fan of it.
** Kirran Somerlade (''a.k.a.'' [=LordMoonstone=]) is another critic of the series who nonetheless joined Team Four Star. He even joined the main trio ([=KaiserNeko=], Lanipator, and [=Takahata101=]) as one of ''DBZA'''s main writers.
* InMemoriam:
** ''History of Trunks'' was dedicated to Creator/MontyOum, TFS's original choice to play Future Gohan, not long after he passed.
** ''Plan to Eradicate Christmas'' was dedicated to Bulma's Japanese voice actress Creator/HiromiTsuru, who had passed away a month earlier.
** The commentary for ''Buu Bits'' was dedicated to Akira Toriyama himself, who had passed away earlier that month.
* InspirationForTheWork:
** Lanipator’s voice for Mr. Popo was originally one he developed for a school production of ''Theatre/LittleShopOfHorrors'' where he was cast as Audrey II.
** [=Takahata101=] had three inspirations for his Imperfect Cell voice. The first is obviously Creator/DameonClarke's voice from the series' English dub, with the second being [[WesternAnimation/SpaceGhostCoastToCoast Zorak]]. The third one was the villainous Djinn from the 1997 Horror film ''Film/{{Wishmaster}}'', which he demonstrates in his individual and group creator commentary.
*** For his Perfect Cell voice, Taka directly cited [[WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons Sideshow Bob]] as a source of inspiration, more specifically, Creator/KelseyGrammer's performance during the episode [[Recap/TheSimpsonsS5E2CapeFeare "Cape Feare"]] and his line "I shall send you to heaven, before I send you to Hell".
* KeepCirculatingTheTapes:
** TheStinger of Episode 16 was originally not uploaded on the [=YouTube=] version due to the video time limits set in place back in 2010, and it could only be found on TFS's website. Since the videos were removed from their website, the clip was considered lost for a long time. However, the full version of the episode, including the stinger, can be found on both [=YouTube=], [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rakhTQpu4CI as seen here,]] and TFS's Twitch channel, [[https://www.twitch.tv/videos/321204520 as seen here.]]
** The brief teaser for the now-cancelled Season 4 was removed from the GrandFinale, only existing through mirrored versions.
* TheOtherDarrin:
** [=Vegeta3986=] replaces Lanipator as Raditz in [[HostileShowTakeover the middle of the first episode]]. As of ''Dragon Ball Z Kai Abridged'', Lanipator has gone back to playing Raditz since [=Vegeta3986=] left the show.
** Starting in the Bardock special, Creator/LittleKuriboh replaces Lani as Freeza, which is subtly indicated when Freeza starts off with Lanipator, coughs mid-line, and switches voices when he starts again.
** This happened with Chi-Chi's casting behind the scenes. The original plan was for Whiteash to handle the character, but she backed out due to life issues before Chi-Chi's first appearance. Then Krisrix voiced her for the first season. Then she was replaced by [[Creator/KimlinhTran Kimlinh "Hnilmik" Tran]], a veteran of many popular flash animations, machinima, and adaptation projects, as well as voicing Ms. Fortune in ''VideoGame/{{Skullgirls}}''. Pick your favorite.
** Because [=Vegeta3986=] left the series, everyone he played in the series had been replaced since Episode 24. Kami is now voiced by [[WebAnimation/WeeklyTubeShow Remix]], Lanipator has gone back to voicing Raditz (whenever he appears, anyway), Yamcha is now voiced by Faulerro from ''WebVideo/NullmetalAlchemist'', and Garlic Jr. and Oolong both went to [=KaiserNeko=].
** Master Roshi switched from being played by Creator/MasakoX in Seasons 1 and 2, to Lanipator for Season 3. It was explained in the commentary for Episode 31 that Masako's voice wasn't working out for the comedic opportunities they saw now that the character was appearing more frequently in Season 3, so they switched from Masako's impression of Kōhei Miyauchi to Lani's more expressive Mike [=McFarland=] impression.
** [=KaiserNeko=] played Cooler in the Abridged version of the original Bardock special, but decided not to reprise the role for ''Revenge of Cooler Abridged'' and its sequel because he felt he couldn't give the character the proper "majesty". So TFS got Creator/ChrisGuerrero to play the role instead.
** When he appeared in ''Christmas Tree of Might'', [[spoiler:Santa Claus]] was voiced by Creator/KyleHebert. Assuming that it's the same character, [[spoiler:Santa]]'s appearance in ''Plan to Eradicate Christmas'' is this, since there he's played by Kamran Nikhad.
** Kaiser has said that, outside of one scene in Season 3, he'd never voice Kid Trunks long-term. The Buu Bits has him being played by [=Megami33=].
** Buu Saga Gohan was initially voiced by Creator/JustinBriner in an EarlyBirdCameo during the ''Super Android 13'' movie. The Buu Bits shorts have him voiced by Ryan Palmer, [[CastingGag who voiced]] [[Franchise/MyHeroAcademia Deku/Izuku Midoriya]] in the WebVideo/XInXMinutes videos the team also does.
** In Videl's EarlyBirdCameo appearance in Season 3, she was voiced by Creator/SarahAnneWilliams. In the Buu Bits shorts, she is now voiced by [[https://twitter.com/KaniDayOfficial/status/1698397630856937788 Katy Johnson]].
* TheOtherMarty: There are times where [=KaiserNeko=] fills in for certain incidental lines when an actor isn't available to record, such as a groan from a weakened Ox King and Kami in the ''Dead Zone'' special. Kaiser does this again in ''Episode of Bardock'', where he plays some of the primitive Saiyans whom were all originally recorded by Lanipator. The creator commentary for the special has Taka, Lani, and Kaiser playing a game of identifying whether it was Lani or Kaiser voicing one of the proto-Sayains in a scene.
* PlayingAgainstType:
** Taka pushed to play Bardock for the ''Father of Goku'' special to prove that he could play a wide range of emotions and a more relatively serious character. Taka's Cell, while still having plenty of comedic moments all-around, is also a far darker and more chilling character than either Nappa or Guru. It goes from violent mood swings in his first form, to a very creepy and stalker-like personality in his second, before rounding out in his final form to be a FauxAffablyEvil character with the power to match his arrogance.
** On the flip side of Taka's case, when the team was abridging the ''Episode of Bardock'' special, Gan approached the team and asked to play Lord Chilled, who was written to be a far sillier and shriller character than the ones that Gan had portrayed in the past (the aforementioned [[DeadpanSnarker Tien]] and [[AffablyEvil Android 17]]).
* QueerCharacterQueerActor: Yajirobe, Korin, and Burter, who were all made gay in the series, are voiced by the gay [=KaiserNeko=]. He also voices the flamboyantly gay Sharpner in the Buu Bits years after the series ended.
* RealitySubtext: In episode 60 Part 3, Goku gives a speech about not wanting to be brought back to life, which is framed in such a way to bring up the real life rumors that ''DBZA'' would be ending. TFS wasn't certain what they were going to do, so they wrote the episode as a possible SeriesFinale in case they decided to end it there. It was [[TrollingCreator designed to needle the fans]]. Although episode 60 ''was'' the end of the series, that wasn't the plan when it was released; only much later did they pull the plug on the show.
* RecycledScript:
** Parodied in-universe in ''Lord Slug Abridged''. Several of Slug's henchmen get fried after they accidentally refer to him as "King Piccolo", and even the Dragon finds his wish ''very'' familiar. It's similar enough that even [[IdiotHero Goku]] figures it out.
*** Piccolo also adds to his RunningGag of how the QuirkyMinibossSquad in the movies is always the same: DumbMuscle, PrettyBoy, and freaky alien with the weird powers.
* ReferencedBy:
** Trunks' line "Either loosen your moral code, or stop hinging the the fate of the world on deathmatches!" is referenced by WebAnimation/OverlySarcasticProductions in "Trope Talk: Tournament Arcs" to summarize the problem with the artificial situation of tournament arcs.
** Vegeta's line "That's not funny! It's never been funny! It's never gonna be funny" was quoted word-for-word in ''ComicBook/SonicTheHedgehogIDW'' when Sonic calls Eggman "Baldy [=McNosehair=]". When the guys asked [[Creator/IanFlynn the writer]] about it, he confirms that it was an actual reference to ''Kai Abridged 2''.
** The creator commentary for Episode 32 has Lani note that he's seen at least three wrestlers quote Vegeta's "[[HesBack I'M BACK BITCHES!]]" on Twitter after recovering from an injury.
** The English dub of ''Manga/JojosBizarreAdventureStardustCrusaders'' has the Mannish Boy utter "crap baskets!"
* RoleReprise:
** After more or less putting ''WebVideo/YuYuHakushoAbridged'' on permanent hiatus in 2011, Lanipator reprised the roles of Yusuke and Kuwabara in 2017 for a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yyi2IaxO00I video short]] where they challenge Cell to a fight in the days leading up to the Cell Games.
** Yami Yugi in the ''Cell Vs.'' Short is voiced by none other than Creator/LittleKuriboh.
** Christopher Robin Miller first played [[SuddenlyVoiced Talking Movie Bubbles]] in the ''Lord Slug'' movie in 2011. He would return 6 years later to reprise the role for the ''BROLY'' movie.
** Almost every actor reprises their role for the Buu Bits after the conclusion of Season 3 in 2018 (though it helps some actors reprised for their characters in the ''WebAnimation/DragonShortZ'' series).
** Grant Smith, who left the team at the start of 2023, returns for the Buu Bits as the same BitCharacter he played in Season 3 (whose last appearance was in 2018).
* ScheduleSlip: The release of ''History of Trunks'' was given a teaser trailer that promised a February 2015 upload. It didn't come out until March 19th.
* ScrewedByTheLawyers: As with many Abridged Series, ''DBZA'' has been hit with copyright strikes and various other troubles, particularly in its later years. This ended up being one of the reasons (along with the usual creative burn-out and desire to do original work rather than parody an existing one) that Season 4 was ultimately cancelled, as by then TFS had grown exponentially as a business with its non-''DBZA'' projects, and all of it could have been lost if they pushed their luck too far.
* ShrugOfGod: In the commentary for Episode 18, Lani and Kaiser admit they don't know if Ghost Nappa is an actual ghost or just a bunch of hallucinations conjured up by Vegeta's mind.
* SignificantDoubleCasting:
** [=MasakoX=] plays both the father and son duo of Son Goku and Son Gohan, just like in the Japanese audio.
** For the Buu Bits, [=Megami33=] plays both Bulma and Kid Trunks, who are mother and son respectively.
** The Buu Bits has Hnilmik playing both Chi-Chi and Goten, who are also mother and son. Brothers Teen Goten and Adult Gohan (seen at the end of the series timeskip) are both voiced by Ryan Palmer.
** Simon Robertson voices the titular villain of the Buu Bits (both Majin and Kid forms), along with his reincarnation seen at the end of the series, Uub.
* ThrowItIn:
** [=KaiserNeko=] mentions in a few Episode Breakdowns a number of unscripted things that were added in during editing:
*** In ''Kai Abridged'' Episode 2, Goku getting interrupted in mid-sentence by Vegeta dying is a result of [=MasakoX=] flubbing his line. Freeza FlippingTheBird was also ad-libbed.
*** When Cell meets the East City Westmen in Episode 44, his head turns in a quick, unnatural fashion. This was originally a fluke, they but kept it because it looked, fittingly for Cell, disturbing.
** Krillin's "bitch" rant to Bulma in episode 18 was improvised on the spot by Lanipator.
** The reason why Goku keeps calling Freeza "Freezer" is because of [=MasakoX=]'s accent where he calls Vegeta "Vegeter". Since it's in character for Goku calling Freeza "Freezer", they decided to write Goku's lines where he calls him Freezer.
** Kaiser mentions in the original anime, he heard 8 thudding sounds when the Namekian Dragon Balls land on Earth. He intentionally left in the sounds in Episode 30 part 2 to see if anyone caught it.
** [[https://twitter.com/GanXingba/status/598179403181531136 GanXingba mentioned on Twitter]] that he ad-libbed a lot of Android 17's dialogue.
* TimeShiftedActor:
** Son Gohan went from being voiced by [=MasakoX=] as a kid in Seasons 1-3 to being voiced by Ryan Palmer when he's a teenager in ''Buu Bits''. Before that, Adult Future Gohan from ''History of Trunks'' was voiced by Zach Holzman and Buu Saga Gohan in the ''Android 13'' special was voiced by Creator/JustinBriner.
** In Buu Bits, [[Creator/KimlinhTran Hnilmik]] plays Kid Goten and Ryan Palmer plays his teenaged self.
** [=Megami33=] plays Baby and Kid Trunks in Season 3 and Buu Bits, while [=KaiserNeko=] plays his teenaged self.
* TrollingCreator: As explained under RealitySubtext, the entire final act of Episode 60 part 3 is played up as the SeriesFauxnale for all it's worth; they didn't intend for it to be at the time, but fans were speculating that it would be. It did turn out to be the real SeriesFinale, but over a year after the episode was released.
* TroubledProduction:
** ScrewedByTheLawyers from Toei's copyright claims and CreatorBreakdown due to burnout plagued the series behind the scenes, culminating in the cancellation of the Bojack movie and eventually the announced Season 4. ''Bojack Unbound'' in particular suffered from the team struggling to make anything satisfactory out of the source material (since the villains barely have any lines, they felt they had basically nothing to work with), to the point that they began to resent the process and the movie itself.
** A less serious example would be the scripting for ''History of Trunks Abridged'' going over an hour past schedule because of [=Takahata101=] insisting on keeping the punchline to Future Bulma propositioning Future Gohan. Lanipator also fought for it but not as hard, and [=KaiserNeko=] eventually convinced them that regardless of how many times it CrossesTheLineTwice and might be acceptable in context, the optics of him having known her since he was four while she was older than his father is far too reminiscent of real life grooming to make the cut.[[invoked]]
* TwoVoicesOneCharacter:
** In the Buu Bits, Simon Robertson plays Majin and Kid Buu while [=KaiserNeko=] voices Super Buu.
** Much like the source material, the Buu Bits' [[FusionDance fusion characters]] are voiced by the actors of their constituents talking in unison.
*** Vegito, the fusion of Vegeta and Goku, is voiced by both Lanipator and Masako X.
*** Gotenks, the fusion of Goten and Kid Trunks, is voiced by Hnilmik and [=Megami33=].
* {{Vaporware}}:
** The abridged version of ''Anime/DragonBallZBojackUnbound'' was teased in ''Anime/DragonBallZBrolyTheLegendarySuperSaiyan Abridged'' in January 2017, and was officially promised in several update videos and social media posts. It was officially cancelled in September 2019.
** The Season 3 finale of ''DBZA'', released in 2018, ended with a teaser card promising a Season 4. Multiple update videos and social media updates throughout 2018 and 2019 made promises about the release window, with the timeline being pushed back every time. In October 2019 an off-hand reference was snuck into an update video that the team was considering making Season 4 with original 3D animation rather than the repurposed anime footage the series was known for. In January 2020, [=KaiserNeko=] made a Twitter post that noticeably said that ''[[ExactWords if]]'' Season 4 was made, it would be done with 3D models. After being bombarded with questions by upset fans, the team finally admitted that Season 4 was cancelled in February 2020.
* WordOfDante:
** Some fans use TFS's {{Fanon}} about the canon series, especially with regard to TheMultiverse. The Abridged Series itself refers to {{Alternate Timeline}}s as "universes", in keeping with the use of the term in ''Webcomic/DragonBallMultiverse'', but ''Anime/DragonBallSuper'' established a whole different definition of a "universe" that directly contradicts TFS's explanation.
** The original ''Dragon Ball Z'' never depicts how Gero's son was killed, and Creator/AkiraToriyama said [[AllThereInTheManual in supplemental material]] only that he was killed in battle by an enemy soldier. The Abridged Series includes a scene which shows that Gero's son was killed (along with many others) by Goku himself in the course of the original ''Manga/DragonBall''. Many fans now adopt the Abridged Series version as {{Fanon}}. This also elaborated further in the Creator Commentary that choosing to have Goku be responsible for Gero's son's death in Abridged canon was a deliberate choice to paint him as more morally gray due to his general indifference to consequences [[DeathIsASlapOnTheWrist like death]] rather than sanitize him as Toriyama ended up doing, which was also more favorably received in making Goku a more nuanced character.
* WordOfGay: Several characters voiced by [=KaiserNeko=] are gay, but not all of them are. He's had to clarify on Website/{{Tumblr}} that they're not gay because ''he's'' gay, but because it would have been funnier; Korin and Yajirobe were a perfect OddCouple, and [[spoiler:Burter]] having no obvious indicator of his sexual orientation made it funny for him to be outed. But Oolong, Turtle, King Kai, Gregory, [[spoiler:Zarbon]], and Future Trunks are not gay.
* WriteWhatYouKnow: During the 10th anniversary marathon on Twitch, Taka explained that Guru's "Party Pooper" song was something his father used to sing when he was being melodramatic. He added that when his dad saw the episode, he jokingly asked, "When do I get paid for this?"
* WriteWhoYouKnow: A number of Tien's character traits -- such as him being Jewish and having a fantasy battleball league -- are directly based on his voice actor Marc "Ganxingba" Soskin.
-->'''[=KaiserNeko=]:''' Gan literally told me, "You ''can’t'' keep making Tenshinhan me!" and I told him, "Yes, we fucking can," and will!
