!!The franchise in general:
* BTeamSequel: Every game in the series after the first one was made by a different team from the one behind the first game. That said, the developers had remained fairly consistent since then.
* DevelopmentHell: It was announced in 2011 that Creator/ScreenGems had acquired the movie rights to the series and planned to make one with [[https://screenrant.com/devil-may-cry-movie-screen-gems/ Kyle Ward]] attached as screenwriter. Nothing was heard from it since the announcement.
* FlipFlopOfGod:
** Capcom originally announced that Creator/NinjaTheory's ''[=DmC=]'' was a ContinuityReboot, then said it was a {{Prequel}}, and then an AlternateContinuity.
** In regards to ''2''[='=]s placement in the [[AnachronicOrder chronology]] of the numbered titles. While the placement of ''3''[='=]s manga, ''3'', ''1'', ''[[Anime/DevilMayCryTheAnimatedSeries TAS]]'', and ''4'' were easy enough to arrange, Capcom was so wary about ''2'' that it wasn't until the ''[[https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/4862333907/ Devil May Cry:]] [[https://www.amazon.com/Devil-May-Cry-3142-Graphic/dp/1927925487/ 3142 Graphic Arts]]'' artbook that gave fans a resemblance of a timeline. With ''5'''s announcement at [=E3=] 2018, it was initially stated that the order was ''3'' > ''1'' > ''TAS'' > ''4'' > ''2'' > ''5'', but later on, Capcom streamed a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oa6pa4RGpMw summary recap]] on February 6, 2019, that [[https://twitter.com/gypsyOtoko/status/1093463599874486272 changed the order]] where the timeline became ''3'' > ''1'' > ''TAS'' > ''2'' > ''4'' > ''5'' instead.
* FountainOfExpies: Dante's received his fair share of these over the years:
** [[VideoGame/{{Gungrave}} Brandon "Beyond the Grave" Heat]] is more a {{silent|Protagonist}} variation minus the {{BFS}} and more emphasis on shooting. It appears the [[GunFu Gunslinger]] Style was inspired by his gunplay on the debut game.
** [[VideoGame/GodHand Gene]]. He also doubles as a (decidedly more lighthearted) expy of [[Manga/FistOfTheNorthStar Kenshiro]]. Capcom would later take notes and base Nero partially off the former.
** [[VideoGame/{{Bayonetta}} Bayonetta and Jeanne]] are both GenderFlip examples. The two ladies are snarkers that both fight with swords and guns, taunt their enemies, and the latter even has white hair and dresses in red. The only differences is that they are witches that fight angels. [[note]] They fight demons in the sequel.[[/note]]
** [[VideoGame/{{Onechanbara}} Kagura]] is another gender flip example that is very {{Stripperific}} and arguably an expy of the ''[=DMC3=]'' incarnation. A HalfHumanHybrid ({{Dhampyr}} in this case) that's young, snarky, taunts, and likes to show off. It fits the bill.
** [[VideoGame/TheWonderful101 Wonder Blue]], Dante in Franchise/SuperSentai form. A HotBlooded, cocky swordsman with silver locks and a BadassLongcoat. Not surprising considering [[Creator/HidekiKamiya his creator]] also made Dante.
** [[VideoGame/HonkaiImpact3rd Siegfried Kaslana]] is a dead ringer for Dante - the hair, the BadassLongcoat, the use of two guns and a {{BFS}}, the lecherousness, the laid-back attitude, the fondness for pizza, and [[BreadMilkEggsSquick the ability to turn into a half-demonic form.]] Like Dante, he gets his half-demonic form through getting [[ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice impaled by his own sword.]]
** [[VideoGame/LeagueOfLegends Samira's]] creators have listed [[https://twitter.com/Lanky_Tree/status/1300124059225616384 many inspirations]] [[https://twitter.com/Kindlejack/status/1300174488894537728 for her character]], but the one she most obviously resembles is Dante, from the StylishAction-inspired fighting style (complete with a {{combo|s}}-based [[GameplayGrading grading system]], itself called ''Style'' to parallel ''DMC'''s "Stylish Rank"), to wielding a sword and a pair of handguns (one black and one white), to having an ability called ''Inferno Trigger'' (not to be confused with Dante's "Devil Trigger"), to being voiced by Trish's [[Creator/AtsukoTanaka Japanese voice actress]], to even [[ShoutOut directly quoting several of his catchphrases.]]
--->'''Samira''': Jackpot.
** [[VideoGame/TalesOfCrestoria Vicious]] is another Dante expy; dual wielding guns, wearing a longcoat with no shirt and surviving being stabbed through the heart. Complete with a cocky and trollish attitude, as well as not even hiding the fact that he's thought of as a bad guy.
** [[Manga/VampireKnight Zero Kiryuu]]'s characterization is patterned around Dante. Both despised the other species that they become hunters in hunting them down, skilled with both a gun and sword, white-haired, have an evil twin brother (Vergil and Ichiru), and [[EtTuBrute getting betrayed by the female lead]] (Trish and [[spoiler:Yuuki]]) [[WomanScorned that they vowed to kill them the next time they crossed paths with the respective female]].
* NoExportForYou:
** There's a bunch of ''DMC'' materials that were never released outside of Japan, including: a good amount of [[AllThereInTheManual artbooks]] that go into further details on things that got left out, two [[AudioAdaptation drama CDs]] for ''[[Anime/DevilMayCryTheAnimatedSeries The Animated Series]]'' that serve the same role (and fill in some of the blanks between ''[=DMC1=]'' and ''TAS''), the two-volume novelization of ''4'' subtitled ''Deadly Fortune'', and the tie-in[=/=]prequel novel for 5 titled ''Before the Nightmare''.
** For a more minor example, while ''Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition'' was released digitally around the world, physical copies were only released in Japan and other parts of Asia. Somewhat subverted, however, as those who live in other countries can still purchase a physical copy online, as there is an English option available and the [=PS4=] and Xbox One both aren't region-locked.
** The pachislot machines (a combination of a traditional slots machine with a pachinko machine) for ''[[http://www.enterrise.co.jp/slot/product07/index.html 4]]'', ''[[http://www.enterrise.co.jp/slot/product13/index.php Devil May Cry X: The Last Judgement]]'' (the "X" pronounced "cross"), and ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfHSWBVyRuM CR Devil May Cry 4]]''. The first two, produced by Enterrise, used the in-game assets that included additional scenes and lines not seen in either the original game's release or the ''Special Edition'', to which online comments have noted that ''DMCX'' somehow tied Vergil's story much ''tighter'' into ''4'' compared to the ''Special Edition'' release.
** In a rare inversion, the Collector's Edition of ''5'' that included a miniature version of the van seen in-game as well a small artbook was restricted to Amazon US and Canada, and the US Capcom online store.
** The ''Visions of V'' [[https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2019-03-09/devil-may-cry-5-game-gets-manga-spinoff-about-v/.144360 spin-off manga]] tells V's point of view prior to the events of ''5'', but the online manga service it's being released on is region-locked behind Japanese [=ISPs=] unless one uses a VPN.
* NoPortForYou: During MediaNotes/TheSixthGenerationOfConsoleVideoGames era, the original versions of ''VideoGame/DevilMayCry1'', ''VideoGame/DevilMayCry2'' and ''VideoGame/DevilMayCry3DantesAwakening'' were exclusive to the Platform/PlayStation2 and weren't released on the other home console platforms (Platform/{{Xbox}}, Platform/NintendoGameCube, Platform/SegaDreamcast). It took the next generations of consoles and future ports, particularly the ''HD Collection'' [[UpdatedReRelease re-release]], for the three games to be available in some form on the newer Xbox consoles and eventually on the Platform/NintendoSwitch.
* TheOtherDarrin:
** Dante's voice actors, due to the first game being recorded in Toronto and the later games being recorded in Los Angeles. They didn't bring one back for a second game until ''4'' (see the Characters page for the full list). It wasn't until Creator/ReubenLangdon (Dante's InkSuitActor) voiced him in ''3'' that a VA stuck. Subsequently, Langdon went on to reprise his role in ''4'', ''[[Anime/DevilMayCryTheAnimatedSeries The Animated Series]]'', and ''5'', the latter two causing a massive moment of fandom rejoicing when announced.
*** This is made even more jarring if one considers Dante's appearance as a SecretCharacter in the [=PS2=] version of ''VideoGame/ViewtifulJoe''. Although it came out a year after ''2'' (where he was voiced by Matthew Kaminsky), Dante's voice actor is the same as the original game (Drew Coombs). In other words, it went from Drew Coombs, to Matthew Kaminsky, ''back'' to Drew Coombs, and then finally to Creator/ReubenLangdon, who has been voicing Dante ever since ''3''.
*** This doesn't even factor in Dante's ''other'' out-of-universe appearance as a GuestFighter in ''Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne'', where Dante's voice actor is Kaminsky again. However, it's just a case of [[NonDubbedGrunts reusing his grunts and warcries]] from ''2''. The HD rerelease of the game would properly give him a voice, that of his now-standard actor Reuben Langdon.
*** Dante was Darrin'd again for the reboot, this time being voiced by Tim Phillipps. Granted, that Dante is technically a different character with a different personality, so keeping the same voice actor would have been odd.
** Trish was voiced by Creator/SaraLafleur in the first game, Creator/LuciChristian in ''TAS'' (Creator/AtsukoTanaka in the original Japanese version), Danielle Burgio in ''4'' and ''[=MvC3=]'', and then Creator/WendeeLee in ''5'' (with Tanaka reprising in Japanese from ''4'' onward).
** It would seem that out of all of the recurring characters (what few there are), only Lady has kept her VA (Creator/KariWahlgren). At least until ''[=DMC4:SE=]'', where Creator/KateHiggins assumed the role, rerecording all of Wahlgren's lines along with providing new ones for additional cutscenes and [[PromotedToPlayable Lady's playable outings]].
* ThePeteBest: Creator/ReubenLangdon is Dante's third voice actor after Drew Coombs (who voiced him in [[VideoGame/DevilMayCry1 the first game]] and ''VideoGame/ViewtifulJoe'') and Matthew Kaminsky (who voiced him in [[VideoGame/DevilMayCry2 the second game]] and, by technicality of reusing grunts from that game, ''VideoGame/ShinMegamiTenseiIIINocturne'') but because Langdon became a mainstay since the third game and also voiced Dante in [[Anime/DevilMayCryTheAnimatedSeries the animated series]] and [[VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom3 other cameos]], he's a lot more iconic than his predecessors, to the point where him being given proper voice acting in ''SMTIII''[='=]s HD remaster was recorded by Langdon.
* PopCultureUrbanLegends: A rumor once claimed that there was "supposed" to be a ''Devil May Cry'' spin-off subtitled ''Dance of Sparda'', implying that it would've focused on the Legendary Dark Knight. For a long time, it was being passed around as some interesting "trivia" within the fandom, and at one point, it was also rumored as a spin-off for the Platform/PlayStationPortable. But due to the lack of any verifiable evidence supporting these claims, let alone the lack of a definite proof or WordOfGod that it was a legitimate WhatCouldHaveBeen behind-the-scenes, by the early [=2020s=], the ''DMC'' fandom just eventually classified it as an Internet hoax, misinformation, or wishful thinking that got spread online.
* SimilarlyNamedWorks:
** Music/TheWeeknd has a song titled "Devil May Cry", which is used in the Official Motion Picture Soundtrack of ''Film/TheHungerGamesCatchingFire''.
** There's a Ghana movie titled ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZo59DeZY9g Obonsam Besu (Devil May Cry)]]''.
* ThrowItIn: The enemy juggling mechanic was born from [[AscendedGlitch a glitch]] that accidentally allowed juggling in ''VideoGame/OnimushaWarlords''. The glitch was fixed before ''Onimusha'''s release, but was so awesome that Capcom added it to to the first ''DMC'' and later became a staple for the series.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** There was a plan for a ''Devil May Cry'' game to be released on the Platform/PlayStationPortable. The original announcement came via Sony during [[UsefulNotes/ElectronicEntertainmentExpo E3]] 2004, but [[https://www.ign.com/articles/2004/05/12/devil-may-cry-and-viewtiful-joe-to-psp IGN noted that it wasn't mentioned in Capcom's pre-E3 press briefing]]. When IGN later asked Capcom producer Tsuyoshi Tanaka (who worked on ''[=DMC2=]'') and Yuji Shimomura (action scene director on ''[=DMC3=]'') about it, the only response was a "[[https://www.ign.com/articles/2004/05/15/e3-2004-what-about-devil-may-cry-psp no comment]]." Eventually, [[https://kotaku.com/devil-may-cry-psp-cancelled-5213742 Kotaku reported]] via an April 2009 issue of the Japanese gaming magazine ''Famitsu'' that showed the tentatively titled "Devil May Cry series" being "suspended for retail," which meant it was cancelled.
** After ''Devil May Cry 3'' was released, there would've been a new game solely focused on Lady, but Director Hideaki Itsuno said it didn't get off the ground.
** When he was interviewed for ''VideoGame/DevilMayCryPeakOfCombat'', Itsuno [[https://youtu.be/wcPCPFVnH0k?si=WyPBvUfZq25tIFqg&t=90 implied]] that a [[PlayerVersusPlayer PvP]] mode was planned at some point in the older games, even before ''[=PoC=]'' made it possible. [[note]]In that interview, he refers to the older games as the "console" versions while comparing the mobile game to them.[[/note]]
--->'''Hideaki Itsuno:''' When I heard that there's going to be a PVP mode... I was surprised, but for some reason... We originally wanted to do this in the console versions. We considered a lot but it was difficult to realize and we didn't make it in the end.
* WordOfGod:
** Hideki Kamiya states that Dante was inspired by [[Manga/SpaceAdventureCobra Cobra]] and ''[[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventureBattleTendency Battle Tendency]]''-era Joseph Joestar, noting that both characters were heroes who snark and provoke their opponents without fear no matter how dangerous they may be.
** Following the release of ''[=DMC5=]'', Hideaki Itsuno gave some tidbits for those who are new to the franchise, which also serve as a refresher to the general lore, or a way to answer some questions. For example, what ''is'' Dante's motivation or drive? [[https://www.gameinformer.com/gamescom-2018/2018/08/24/capcoms-hideaki-itsuno-on-ninja-theory-nico-and-the-difference-between Dante is driven by a desire to protect something. Specifically, he wants to respect his father's decision of protecting humanity.]]
