* AuthorsSavingThrow: After the show was criticised for glorifying terrorist and fascist warriors, the hosts made sure to state that they were not celebrating Saddam Hussein and Pol Pot during their mutual episode.
* BannedInChina:
** Rather [[UsefulNotes/TheTroubles understandably]], the IRA vs. Taliban episode did not air in the UK. The closest it came was when Creator/CharlieBrooker showed clips of it as host of the show ''Series/YouHaveBeenWatching''. The "Back for Blood" special which included the IRA a second time didn't air in the country either.
** It seems that Bravo cut out the Stiletto test from Jesse James gang vs Al Capone gang and in KGB vs CIA they cut the use of the exploding cigar at the start of the sim.
* ExecutiveMeddling: Many of the experts who appeared on the show have complained that executives pressured or even outright ordered them to showcase weapons that were cool instead of weapons that were BoringButPractical.
* FalselyAdvertisedAccuracy: There's controversy about the scientific and statistical validity of the tests and whether the experts know what they're talking about. Some people have legitimate complaints about the capabilities of individual warriors portrayed in situations. Others are just nerd raging. The combat scene follows RuleOfCool and is not really intended to be well researched or informative.
* PromotedFanboy: Before he became a host, Richard "Mack" Machowicz revealed that he is a fan of the show in one of the Season 3 preseason Aftermaths.

!!Non-trope trivia
* Spartan vs. Ninja immediately disproved the "skill always trumps power" trend that began with Gladiator vs. Apache and Viking vs. Samurai. The second instance of "power" trumping "skill" is Vlad the Impaler vs. Sun Tzu.
* Atilla the Hun vs. Alexander The Great was the first simulation battle to have extra soldiers (who end up as mere fodder) alongside the main fighters, but Jesse James vs. Al Capone was the first to have a squad battle with leaders.
* Jesse James vs. Al Capone was the first squad battle that ended with more than one of the winning team left standing as opposed to just one man remaining. It's also the only episode is which one title character is NOT killed by the other title character, as Frank is the one to deliver the kill shot to Al Capone, and not Jesse himself.
* The KGB vs. CIA was the first battle that featured women in combat (their first actual appearance in a combat scenario was Mafia vs. Yakuza as a bystander).
* The Ming Warrior vs. Musketeer is the first team battle that takes place without any buildings in sight.
* The Navy SEAL vs. Israeli Commando is the first battle that had a weapon perform a [[OneHitPolykill polykill]] in the simulation.
** While that battle had a polykill as the ''last'' kill, a polykill was the ''first'' kill in Saddam Hussein vs. Pol Pot.
* Like its future successor, ''WebAnimation/DeathBattle'', several matchups (especially later in Season One) had connections between the fighters:
** The Mafia and Yakuza are the two viscous criminals gangs of East and West.
** The Spetsnaz and the Green Beret are the elite forces of their countries' armies.
** The Taliban and the IRA are two notorious guerrilla war units.
** During the "Back for Blood" special that had winners from the first season facing off, the Ancient Warrior matchup consisted of Spartan vs Samurai, which the experts agreed were a good match given their similar cultures of raising warriors.
** SWAT and GSG-9 are the two most elite units of their home countries' police.
** Attila the Hun and Alexander the Great are two brutal generals of history that helped conquer for their home countries.
** Jesse James and Al Capone are America's most infamous outlaws, with dozens of corpses left behind in their wake of crime. What sets them apart is how they ran their gangs: Jesse ran his like a brotherhoood, while Al was more than happy to kill anyone who might be a rat.
** The Viet Cong and the Nazi Waffen-SS are two military units who were infamous during two of the world's most famous wars.
** The Somali Pirates and Medelin Cartel are two notorious criminal organizations who stole from their countries to forge their empires.
** The KGB and CIA are two of the most well known spy agencies of their home countries.
** The Ming Warriors and Musketeers are warriors who were the first users of gunpowder.
** The Comanche and Mongols are both badass horse riding warriors.
** The Navy SEAL and Israelli Commando are two units trained to be absolute warriors.
