!!!The novel:
* TechnologyMarchesOn: The novel seems a bit dated in the way its characters eroticize car accidents, since it takes place at a time when not only was automotive design more self-consciously sexual, people did not generally wear seat belts[[note]]Ballard is only wearing his in his own accident near the beginning of the book because he wanted to keep his secretary, whom he was ending an affair with, from embracing him as he drove off.[[/note]] even though they were available, and airbags were not included in cars either, making the possibility of serious injury or death in a car crash more likely.

!!!The 1996 film:
* BannedInChina: The film was banned by the local council in the City of Westminster (which includes most of the central London cinemas) after the ''[[UsefulNotes/BritishNewspapers Daily Mail]]'' launched one of the most unhinged censorious campaigns against a single film in the UK's living memory. [[LoopholeAbuse However, anyone wanting to watch the film only had to walk along to the non-Westminster half of Shaftsbury Avenue- that is in the neighboring borough of Camden- to see it in a cinema there]].
* CreatorPreferredAdaptation: After seeing the film adaptation, J.G. Ballard [[https://www.wired.com/beyond-the-beyond/2015/11/david-cronenberg-mulling-over-j-g-ballards-crash/ reportedly said]] that he found it better than the book.
* TheDanza: Creator/JamesSpader as James Ballard. This one is most certainly coincidence, as this character's name is taken from the writer (James Graham Ballard) rather than the actor.
* DeletedScene: Sex scenes between James Ballard and his secretary were filmed but cut because Creator/DavidCronenberg felt the actors' chemistry was too good, contravening the nature of all the other relationships in the film.
* FakeNationality: Unclear; the film's set in Toronto but it's never specified whether Creator/JamesSpader, Creator/HollyHunter, and Creator/RosannaArquette's characters are Canadian or not.
