Context Trivia / BuffyTheVampireSlayer

Go To

!!The movie:
* ActingForTwo: In the flashback, the medieval Slayer and her Watcher are played by Creator/KristySwanson and Creator/DonaldSutherland. On the other hand, the Slayer and the Watcher continually reincarnate looking identical to her past lives, so they are theoretically still the same characters.
* CompletelyDifferentTitle: Became ''Magic Wizard'' in Taiwan.
* CreatorBacklash: Joss Whedon eventually walked off the set due to how his vision was being mishandled and rewritten.
-->"The director ruined it. What I started with was a horror action-comedy. It had fright, it had camera movement, it had acting — all kinds of interesting things that weren't in the final film apart of the jokes — and there were a lot more of them [in my script] and all of my favorite ones got cut — it was supposed to have a little more edge to it. It was supposed to be a visceral entertainment rather than a glorified sitcom where everyone pretty much stands in front of the camera, says the joke, and exits. I wasn't happy about anything. I had one advantage from it: the direction was so bland that the jokes kind of stood out, because they were the only things to latch on to. In a way, that kind of worked for me because it got people to notice it. But that was a big disappointment to me. It was crushing. I had written this scary film about an empowered woman, and they turned it into a broad comedy. It was terrible and a great lesson for me. I knew in the future that I would find a way to do things in a different way."
* DawsonCasting:
** 22-year-old Creator/KristySwanson playing high school senior Buffy.
** Luke Perry likewise was 27 playing Pike.
* DeletedRole: Creator/SethGreen filmed some scenes as a vampire but most of them were cut. He can be seen from behind and briefly when Buffy kicks him outside the gym.
* ExecutiveMeddling: Creator/JossWhedon wanted a BMovie feel to the movie, while the execs much preferred the comedy aspects of the script. The meddling was so bad that Whedon -- himself no stranger to executives meddling in his TV series -- walked off set one day and never came back. A version of the original script apparently still exists and is considered canon in series continuity. Whedon claims that the ''Origin'' comic miniseries is the closest publicly available thing to it.
* FakeBrit: Merrick, a British character being played by the Canadian Creator/DonaldSutherland.
* FakeNationality: The medieval maiden played by the California-born Swanson in the flashback sequences would obviously have to be non-American. She comes off as [[FakeBrit English]] [[NotEvenBotheringWithTheAccent (not that Swanson tries very hard)]], but a brief line by Merrick suggests that she was Hungarian. (In the original script, she's an Italian.)
* HostilityOnTheSet: Joss Whedon called Donald Sutherland "a prick" and says he was rude to everyone.
* InspirationForTheWork: According to Creator/JossWhedon, "the idea for the film came from seeing too many blondes walking into alleyways and being killed. I wanted, just once, for her to fight back when the monster attacked, and kick his ass. It was a simple thing for me to write because I knew exactly how I wanted things to work. I have special powers and I thought it would be great to have vampires as the villains. She wouldn't be able to fit into normal society because she had these powers and this job that kept her from being what she wanted to be."
* LoopingLines: Creator/BenAffleck was quite embarrassed to discover he apparently delivered his single line “Take it” so badly that it was dubbed over.
* ThePeteBest: Creator/KristySwanson was the original Buffy, but of course Sarah Michelle Gellar is the one who played the role in the TV series. And achieved greater fame as a result.
* RealLifeRelative: Kristy Swanson's father plays the referee of the basketball game.
* ThrowItIn: Amilyn's ludicrously protracted and over-the-top death in the movie, ad-libbed by Creator/PaulReubens.
* VindicatedByCable: The film got a much better reception on VHS and TV re-airings than its initial release and it was because of that that Joss was able to try again and make a TV series out of it. A lot of fans are grateful for the movie because if it wasn't for the home releases, we likely wouldn't have the TV show in the first place.
* WagTheDirector: Donald Sutherland had a habit of improvising and ad-libbing, greatly annoying Joss Whedon. He did however have full permission from director Rubel Kuzui, because he was the biggest name in the cast.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Creator/AlyssaMilano almost got the lead role. She would later become one of the leads for ''{{Series/Charmed|1998}}'' - a show heavily influenced by ''Buffy'' (albeit more the show, rather than the movie).
** The first incarnation of Creator/JossWhedon's idea of "a young woman who is far more than she seems" that eventually developed into ''Buffy'' was called "Rhonda the Immortal Waitress".
** Music/DavidBowie, Music/MickJagger, and Creator/CaryElwes were set to make cameos as vampires but these were cut due to time and budgetary constraints.
** Amilyn was written to be female and played by Creator/JoanChen. When she dropped out, the character became male instead.
** In the original version of the script, Merrick committed suicide to escape being turned into a vampire by Lothos, who wanted to know the Slayer's identity so he could dispatch with her. It is this version that was restored in the Buffy "Origin" comic.
** Buffy says she wants to marry Creator/ChristianSlater. In the original script, she said Creator/CharlieSheen. (Kristy Swanson would [[HilariousInHindsight co-star with Sheen]] [[Film/TheChase1994 in a film two years later]].)
** The element of Buffy burning down the gym existed in the original script but was not incorporated into the final production. The event is first referenced in the debut episode "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS1E1WelcomeToTheHellmouth Welcome to the Hellmouth]]".
** Check out Whedon's original script [[https://buffy.fandom.com/wiki/Buffy_the_Vampire_Slayer_(film)/Original_Script here]].

!!The TV series:
* ActingForTwo:
** One episode was dubbed into French with one single male actor and one single female actor. They didn't even try to disguise it.
** "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E16Doppelgangland Doppelgangland]]" had Willow meeting her LesbianVampire [[EvilTwin counterpart from an alternate universe]]. This resulted in Creator/AlysonHannigan not only talking to herself, but licking her own neck.
** Several episodes had Buffy interacting with a robotic duplicate of herself.
** Season seven's BigBad was [[spoiler:The First Evil, who can only take the form of people who have died, which leads to Buffy and Spike both having conversations with "themselves".]]
** Oddly enough, "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS5E3TheReplacement The Replacement]]", where Xander is split into two people is a subversion. Creator/NicholasBrendon, has an identical twin, Kelly Donovan. Their conversations and interactions are done completely without special effects, though through using multiple takes, and editing Nicholas Brendon still did nearly all of the dialog for both Xanders.
* AbilityOverAppearance:
** Producers were reluctant to cast Creator/AmberBenson as Tara because she was too voluptuous - they wanted someone daintier and waifier to take Willow's place as TheWoobie. But Amber won them over with her ability to play awkward and vulnerable.
** Creator/AlysonHannigan's casting went something like this too. Joss stated that all the other girls who auditioned for Willow wore NerdGlasses and acted stereotypically nerdy (including Riff Regan, who played her in the pilot). Alyson won the part based on the fact that she didn't do that.
** Dawn was originally a pre-teen. When Creator/MichelleTrachtenberg was cast, there wasn't enough time to rewrite, hence why she comes off as whiny and immature in her first few episodes.
** In the final season, Violet was originally Asian until Creator/FeliciaDay was cast. There was an Asian potential called Chao-Ahn. Also, Molly was originally written as a pudgy English or Indian girl. When Clara Bryant was cast the character was altered, apparently becoming working-class Londoner.
* ActingInTheDark:
** Creator/ClareKramer and Charlie Weber didn't know about the link between Glory and Ben until the episode it was revealed.
** Sort of. Creator/JamesMarsters only read the scripts for his own scenes, as he was a fan of the show and didn't want to have the rest of the episode spoiled for him.
** Creator/SarahMichelleGellar was the only cast member who knew about Dawn.
** Speaking of Dawn, Creator/MichelleTrachtenberg says she was thrust into the role without knowing much about Dawn’s personality; she describes her initial meeting with Creator/JossWhedon as "Alright, welcome to the cast, you're a teenager, you're a Key, have fun".
* ActorInspiredElement:
** Creator/AlysonHannigan was the one who introduced Creator/JossWhedon to Music/NerfHerder's music, leading to them scoring the show's theme song.
** After reading the script for her character, Creator/ElizaDushku bought accessories and makeup for Faith at a local Claire's.
** The Master was originally supposed to have a beard and long hair before Creator/MarkMetcalf suggested the bald look as a homage to ''Film/{{Nosferatu}}''.
* ActorInspiredHeroism:
** Angel was originally supposed to make a FaceHeelTurn and never turn back. However, Creator/DavidBoreanaz and Creator/SarahMichelleGellar had become close friends, and Gellar allegedly hated the idea that Angel would not get a chance at redemption, so his character arc was changed.
** Spike was originally meant to be a short-lived villain, but Creator/JamesMarsters proved to be very charismatic, and thus the executives made him a recurring character. This allegedly led to HostilityOnTheSet, as Creator/JossWhedon, having already soured on "heroic" vampires after being forced to make Angel redeemable, resented having to do it again for Spike.
* ActorLeavesCharacterDies:
** A very weird example occurred in the ''last'' episode. Creator/EmmaCaulfield wanted to take her career in other directions so explicitly asked to be killed off so that her character could never be used in any of the Spinoffs.
** Maggie Walsh was supposed to be the BigBad of season four, but Lindsay Crouse was offered a film role, so she was hastily killed off by Adam, who became the main villain.
** Kali Rocha (Halfrek) was performing in ''Theatre/NoisesOff'' when season seven was shooting. She was flown in for one day and filmed all her scenes on that one day. As a result, she appears in two episodes and is killed off. She filmed her "death scene" before a green screen for later super-imposition into the scene.
* ActorSharedBackground:
** Creator/JamesMarsters based his accent on Creator/AnthonyStewartHead's. Giles uses an RP English accent on-camera, but his actor sounds like a working-class "tough guy" in real life, using an accent close to Estuary English. Head uses it for Giles' adolescent persona in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E6BandCandy Band Candy]]".
** In "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS1E10Nightmares Nightmares]]", Buffy's personal nightmare is being buried alive by the Master. Creator/SarahMichelleGellar is terrified of graveyards for this same reason, which is [[NightmareFuel amusing]] seeing as her character was buried alive ''twice'' in the show ("[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS1E10Nightmares Nightmares]]" and "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS6E1BargainingPart1 Bargaining, Part 1]]"), and [[IronicFear spends most of her evenings in graveyards]].
** Creator/AlysonHannigan maintains that she [[PerformanceAnxiety cannot sing or dance]] (which hasn't stopped multiple writers from shoehorning her into [[Series/HowIMetYourMother splashy musical numbers]], but oh well), mirroring Willow's nightmare of being forced to sing ''Theatre/MadameButterfly''. ("[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS1E10Nightmares Nightmares]]")
** Baby Buffy went through a phase during which she idolized ice skater Dorothy Hamill. Creator/SarahMichelleGellar enjoys figure skating in real life.
** The scene in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E8LoversWalk Lovers Walk]]" where Cordelia gets impaled is based on a real incident. At five years old, playing around a swimming pool that was still under construction, Creator/CharismaCarpenter fell onto a piece of rebar. Only in real life, she fell off a horse and not through stairs.
** Faith became a Boston native after Creator/ElizaDushku was cast, though Eliza herself is actually from Watertown rather than South Boston like Faith.
** Creator/SarahMichelleGellar and Creator/MichelleTrachtenberg were both raised by single mothers.
** Creator/KristineSutherland said that she drew from her experiences to play Joyce:
-->My mother was a single mother and struggled with a lot of those same issues that I struggle with as Joyce. For the sense of deep love and connection, I draw on my own feelings for my own daughter. In terms of trying to parent an adolescent and my relationship with my mother. I try to figure out those struggles, and try to get into that from her point of view.
** In Season 2, Creator/WentworthMiller plays a jock on the swim team. Miller was a college swimmer in his day.
* BreakthroughHit: For Creator/JossWhedon.
* ButIPlayOneOnTV:
** Due to Willow and Tara appearing in LBGT magazines, Creator/AlysonHannigan and Creator/AmberBenson did have to remind fans that neither of them were lesbians in real life.
** Creator/EmmaCaulfield claims she constantly has to tell fans that she's not afraid of bunnies like Anya is.
* CashCowFranchise: There was no real need to continue the series after it ended (and many feel it should have ended a few seasons before it did), but Creator/JossWhedon and company continue to profit off of it with the line of comics that continue the series.
* CastTheRunnerUp:
** Creator/NathanFillion first auditioned for Angel, before eventually getting to guest star as Caleb in Season 7. However in this case, he already had a working relationship with Creator/JossWhedon from ''{{Series/Firefly}}''.
** Creator/SarahMichelleGellar or Creator/BiancaLawson (Kendra) could have been cast as Cordelia, which was the role they originally auditioned for. Both Creator/CharismaCarpenter and Creator/ElizabethAnneAllen originally auditioned for Buffy. Sarah and Charisma's roles were switched, and the character of Amy was created for Elizabeth.
** When Bianca Lawson actually won the role initially, she opted instead to take a role in the sitcom ''Goode Behavior'' instead. Producers liked her so much that she was introduced on the second season as Kendra.
** Creator/JulieBenz (Darla), Elizabeth Anne Allen (Amy), Julia Lee (the girl who goes by Chanterelle, Lily and Anne), and Mercedes [=McNabb=] (Harmony) all auditioned for the lead role of Buffy.
** Creator/DannyStrong auditioned for ''Xander'' originally. He didn't get the part, obviously, but was later given the role of Jonathan, and his talent at portraying a hapless dupe of a SpearCarrier with HiddenDepths led to his becoming a recurring, popular character. What would have happened if he, not Nicholas Brendon, had won the role of Xander?
** Creator/FeliciaDay auditioned for the role of Fred in ''{{Series/Angel}}'' that went to Creator/AmyAcker. She played the smaller recurring role of the potential Vi in Season 7 of ''Buffy''.
** Creator/ArminShimerman first auditioned for Principal Flutie, before getting cast as Sunnydale High's next principal Snyder. Although the plan was for each principal to be killed off after a few episodes as a RunningGag, they liked his performance enough to keep him on the show until the end of season 3 (with a cameo appearance in "Restless" the following season).
** K. Todd Freeman was in the running for the role of Spike before being cast as Mr. Trick.
* TheCastShowoff:
** Seasons four and five increasingly called on Creator/AnthonyHead's services as a singer and guitarist, which just serves to illustrate how drastically his character changed with time.
** "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS6E7OnceMoreWithFeeling Once More With Feeling]]" reportedly was written after Creator/JossWhedon discovered how many of his cast could sing well during an after-shooting karaoke party; the episode was written specifically to show off the cast's various talents. Notably, Creator/MichelleTrachtenberg, who'd had dance training, got a scene where she danced with Sweeet's {{Mooks}}, and Creator/AlysonHannigan sang about two lines without accompaniment; her other lines were mostly filler. She reportedly begged Joss not to give her many singing lines because she hated her voice, although when she heard how good she sounded after post-production Hannigan regretted giving up so much singing time. Most notably, the Tara solo "Under Your Spell" was supposed to be a duet with Willow.
*** Creator/EmmaCaulfield apparently surprised Joss Whedon with her singing voice, resulting in the writers giving her another song in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS7E5Selfless Selfless]]" (in a flashback to "Once More With Feeling".
** Creator/SarahMichelleGellar's [[ActionGirl Taekwondo and Kickboxing skills]] came in handy for most of the series, but in the episode "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS2E9WhatsMyLinePart1 What's My Line, Part 1]]" she got to show off her ice skating talents too. Also, at Anya and Xander's wedding in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS6E16HellsBells Hell's Bells]]", she got to juggle in order to distract the attendees. In an ironic inversion, Gellar also happens to be terrified of graveyards.
** Creator/MarcBlucas, a gifted college player, had a couple of basketball scenes.
* ChannelHop: The series moved from Creator/TheWB to Creator/{{UPN}} after its fifth season. This temporarily put a halt to crossovers with ''Angel'', which remained on The WB.
* CompletelyDifferentTitle: In France, "Buffy Contre les Vampires'' (Buffy Against the Vampires).
* ConstrainedWriting: A few episodes involved Joss deliberately handicapping the show, usually in response to criticism. They're generally held to be some of the best in the show's run.
** In response to a critic saying the show relied too heavily on its quippy dialog, Whedon wrote "Hush", an episode with almost no dialog. Absent dialog cues, everyone had to relearn how to know when to hit their marks and perform their physical action.
** In response to a critique that the show relied too heavily on its score, Whedon removed all music from "The Body", turning it into an entirely diegetic piece.
** In response to just wanting to, Whedon spent a week at a cabin writing "Once More With Feeling".
* ContestWinnerCameo: When "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E8LoversWalk Lover's Walk]]" originally aired in the US, it was followed by an advert for the phone service 1800-COLLECT, in which Creator/SarahMichelleGellar and Creator/DavidBoreanaz offered a prize of a walk-on part in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E20TheProm The Prom]]."
* ContractualImmortality:
** At the finale of Season 2, Angel is run through with a sword and sucked through a portal into hell. However, Creator/DavidBoreanaz stays on as a regular character in Season 3, even appearing in the title sequence. They try to MindScrew the audience by having him appear in dream sequences but there's never any doubt that he'll be back from hell soon. And sure enough...
** Season 5 ends with Buffy dying, but by the time the episode aired, the fans all knew that there would be a season 6.
** Whedon stated that none of the core four would die in the finale.
* ContractualPurity: Creator/SarahMichelleGellar deliberately kept out of the spotlight, as she didn't want younger fans to see Buffy smoking, drinking, etc.
* CreatorsApathy: Creator/JossWhedon has confirmed that by the time of the seventh season, everybody — cast and crew — was exhausted and eager to move on to new projects. Whedon and much of the writing staff returned to the franchise in comic book form a few years later with considerably renewed enthusiasm.
* CreatorBacklash:
** Creator/SarahMichelleGellar told ''Entertainment Weekly'' that she disliked season six due to its darker tone, the destructive romance between Buffy and Spike and how unrecognizable Buffy was. She also hated the Parker Abrams storyline from season four, as she felt it was out of character for Buffy to engage in a casual fling so soon after Angel's departure.
-->It wasn't who Buffy was, or why people loved her. You don't want to see that dark heroine; you don't want to see her punishing herself. You want to see her killing vampires and making quips. It didn't feel like the character that I loved. Joss always explained that season as being about your twenties, where you’re not a kid anymore, but you don't know what you want to do [with your life]. He always said that I didn’t understand last year because I've always known what I wanted to do, and I didn't have that confusion, [that] dark, depressive period. But I think the heart of the show lies in the humor of the drama. I felt like Buffy's spirit was missing last year.
*** During the twentieth anniversary reunion, she elaborated:
-->I've always said that season six was not my favorite. I felt it betrayed who she was. Even just getting to talk to Joss and be able to get his opinion was not as easy when he’s not upstairs. He had three shows. He had ''Series/{{Angel}}'' and ''Series/{{Firefly}}'' so that was hard.
** Most of the cast came to hate the library scenes because they would take forever to film.
** Subverted with Creator/AlysonHannigan. She requested that she not sing too much in "Once More With Feeling" because she hates her singing voice. But upon seeing the episode, she was surprised at how good she sounded and regretted not singing more. While Gellar was proud of the episode, she hated making it, due to the extra workload it involved.
** Willow's "magic addiction" arc was disliked by both Alyson Hannigan and Joss Whedon himself; the latter added a scene in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS7E1Lessons Lessons]]" where Giles explicitly states that magic is not addictive, and it's explained that Willow's actions were actually due to her not using magic.
** Creator/JamesMarsters was not very happy with Spike's treatment as a regular in season four because of being defanged by the military brain chip. He was actually excited when told that Spike would fall in love with Buffy, seeing that as a much more interesting take on why the character would stay around but was opposed to [[AllLoveIsUnrequited Buffy returning that affection]]. He was also so disturbed by Spike's AttemptedRape of Buffy in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS6E19SeeingRed Seeing Red]]" that he had his contract updated so he would never film such scenes again.
** Creator/SethGreen left because after being really excited about his character arc in the second season, the third season he described as [[DemotedToExtra being on set all day just to say]] "[[TheStoic I agree with Buffy]]." His career taking off in other directions because of the ''Film/AustinPowers'' movies made him ask to leave in the fourth season, even though they tried to keep him with a story arc involving a female werewolf. Rumors say they tried [[TheBusCameBack to bring him back for guest returns]] on either Buffy or Angel, but he was uninterested.
** Jenny Calendar's actress, Robia La[=Morte=], had become a born-again Christian by the time she reprised her role as a guise for The First Evil and didn't take kindly to it, seeing it akin to playing Satan.
** Like many fans, Creator/AmberBenson was unhappy about her character [[spoiler:Tara's death]], to the point where she declined all offers to return to the show when they wanted her to play the First Evil.
** Creator/EmmaCaulfield was a little annoyed at [[spoiler:Anya's death]] when she saw the completed series finale. [[spoiler:She had volunteered for the character to be killed off in the final battle but didn't realise it was going to be [[DroppedABridgeOnHim so sudden]]]].
** Creator/AnthonyStewartHead disliked the plot of Giles possibly being the First in Season 7, partially because it didn't go anywhere, partially because he found it frustrating to not touch anyone. He also felt it was {{out of character}} for Giles to just leave Buffy in Season 6.
** Marti Noxon, who took over as showrunner for Season 6, [[https://www.syfy.com/syfywire/buffy-showrunner-marti-noxon-on-how-season-6-went-too-far-and-was-almost-sadistic later admitted]] that the season was too dark and that [[spoiler:Tara's death]] was a mistake.
** It wasn't just the fans who hated the HD remaster. Whedon stated that the show in widescreen was nonsense, writer David Fury called it "piss poor" and "an embarassing mess", writer Steven S. [=DeKnight=] said that somebody should be indicted and director of photography Michael Gershman said:
-->It's a shame to have all my work thrown in the garbage. I tried to give ''Buffy'' a texture that would turn a teeny bopper show into a serious dramatic presentation. Alas, once any piece of art leaves the artists' hands, control is lost. Sorry everyone can't see the work in its original incarnation. Thanks for keeping me up on the look of the show.
** Creator/JossWhedon has made every effort to ensure that the unaired pilot is never seen.
-->"Ow! That was my favourite spine!"
* CreatorsFavorite:
** Xander (who was a stand-in for Joss), Dawn (with her actress being such a big fan of the series, focus was given to her), and Kennedy (Whedon really liked the character and gave a lot of focus to her) being standouts. Within Season 4, Giles' girlfriend Olivia only appears in episodes Joss directed. She's also mentioned in "Who Are You?" - which is directed by him also. He called Spike his most fully developed character.
** In 2015, when asked about the favorite character among his own, Whedon replied: "My answer would change daily. But, I kind of feel how can say Buffy? She is the distilled essence of everything I am... not. She's the beating heart of everything I have done or will do."
* CreatorsFavoriteEpisode:
** In an interview with ''USA Today'', Creator/JossWhedon named his ten favourite episodes:
*** "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS2E14Innocence Innocence]]": "It's a mission-statement show, and one of the ones where I first found out what we could do".
*** "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS6E7OnceMoreWithFeeling Once More, With Feeling]]": "What am I going to say?"
*** "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS4E10Hush Hush]]"
*** "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS5E16TheBody The Body]]"
*** "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E16Doppelgangland Doppelgängland]]": "Because one Willow is certainly not enough".
*** "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E9TheWish The Wish]]": "Very bleak, very fun. It went to a dark place, and that's really exciting to me. That's where I live".
*** "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS2E22BecomingPart2 Becoming (Part 2)]]": "Buffy loses everything. Also, it had a SwordFight. I love sword fighting".
*** "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS4E22Restless Restless]]": "Most people sort of shake their heads at it. It was different, but not pointless".
*** "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS7E7ConversationsWithDeadPeople Conversations with Dead People]]": "I'm very fond of "Conversations with Dead People". I just thought structurally and tonally it was very interesting and had a lot to say. And I got to write another song".
*** "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS1E12ProphecyGirl Prophecy Girl]]": "Because that was my first time, besides telling directors what to do, that I actually got to direct. And it was the first time I got to kill Buffy, and the first season ender, and it was the first time I realized I could take everything we did in the season and tie it in a bow".
** Creator/SarahMichelleGellar talked to ''Entertainment Weekly'' about her personal favourite episodes:
-->I loved "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E20TheProm The Prom]]". It stood for everything Buffy was about: the fact that she so badly wanted to be part of the other kids’ lives. I think "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS5E16TheBody The Body]]" is pretty amazing. I loved [[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS4E16WhoAreYou the episode in which Buffy and Faith switched]]. That was one of my all-time favorites because I thought [[Creator/ElizaDushku Eliza]] was so great. And also [[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS2E22BecomingPart2 when Buffy realizes she has to kill Angel and she kills him and he comes back]]. Those are my favorites.
** Creator/AlysonHannigan told ''Entertainment Weekly'' which her favourite episodes were in an interview in October 2005:
*** "Hush": "It was a whole new way of figuring out how to act, the not-talking thing".
*** "The Body": "I just remember the no sound, no music - it was so disconcerting".
*** "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS2E11Ted Ted]]": "Creator/JohnRitter was the best. We would all just hang out in his trailer and be like, 'Hi, John Ritter!!' and he didn't care. And, we got to shoot at a mini-golf place".
*** "Doppelgängland": "I was in the vampire Willow outfit, and Alexis had some holy water, and he made this noise, like FFFFT!! And it just cracked me up. I had such a crush on him"[[note]]doubles as a Heartwarming moment, as Alyson and Alexis would end up getting married, and are still together as of 2022[[/note]].
** Creator/NicholasBrendon's favourites were "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS2E16BewitchedBotheredAndBewildered Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered]]", "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E13TheZeppo The Zeppo]]", "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS4E10Hush Hush]]", "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS5E16TheBody The Body]]" and "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS6E7OnceMoreWithFeeling Once More, With Feeling]]".
** Creator/AnthonyStewartHead's favourite episode was "[[{{Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS2E17Passion}} Passion]]".
** Creator/CharismaCarpenter says "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E22GraduationDayPart2 Graduation Day Part 2]]" because that was the first time she got to stake a vampire.
** Creator/KristineSutherland named "Innocence" as her favourite episode to watch as a fan, but the most fun she had was "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E6BandCandy Band Candy]]". She also cited "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS2E1WhenSheWasBad When She Was Bad]]" and "Ted" among her favourites.
** Creator/ElizaDushku's favorite is "[[{{Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E14BadGirls}} Bad Girls]]".
** Creator/JamesMarsters' favourite is "Once More with Feeling".
** Creator/TomLenk said:
-->I'd have to say, out of respect for my character, "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS7E16Storyteller Storyteller]]". I just got to make such an ass out of myself. It was so much fun. Dancing in a toga on a hillside singing with unicorns was pretty embarrassing. I don't do that sort of thing ever in my down time. So, I just had so much fun doing it, but I loved [[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS7E5Selfless Emma’s history episode this year]]. It was really funny. And I’m a huge fan of "The Body". The most devastating hour of television I've ever seen and I loved that.
* CreatorsPest:
** Creator/JossWhedon felt that Adam was the most boring BigBad, a sentiment shared by some of the fandom.
** To say that a decent number of writers on staff were befuddled and annoyed by Spike's popularity would be an understatement. Whedon was known to be particularly frustrated by it, as he believed very firmly that soulless vampires shouldn't be redeemable, and Creator/JamesMarsters has told several stories over the years of seeing the brunt of that frustration on-set. Other writers like David Fury were known to openly condemn Spike's fans on online forums while the show was running, likening them to people writing love notes to serial killers in prison. It had also been stated in several interviews that the point of the deeply controversial episode "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS6E19SeeingRed Seeing Red]]" was to [[CharacterCheck remind viewers that Spike was evil]]. Curiously, later down the line many of these creators have walked back on much of this, with Whedon admitting to preferring Spike with Buffy and David Fury trying to push for Spike to be the one to fulfill the Shanshu prophesy.
* TheDanza: Larry Bagby III as Larry Blaisdell. DB Woodside as Robin Wood.
* DawsonCasting:
** The tenth-graders (16-year-olds) were played by Creator/SarahMichelleGellar (19) as Buffy, Creator/NicholasBrendon (25) as Xander, Creator/AlysonHannigan (22) as Willow, and Creator/CharismaCarpenter (26) as Cordelia. Possibly lampshaded when Wesley (Creator/AlexisDenisof, who is four years older than Carpenter) first meets Cordelia and mistakes her for a teacher. Particularly funny is that Robia [=LaMorte=], who played Jenny Calendar (a teacher), is less than three weeks older than Charisma Carpenter.
** Later additions to the cast included Creator/SethGreen (23) as Oz (18), Creator/MarcBlucas (27) as Riley (22), and Creator/AmberBenson (22) as Tara (19). As for immortal/unaging characters, we have Creator/JamesMarsters (35) as Spike (27-29) and Creator/EmmaCaulfield (25) as Anya (18-19), though it's mentioned in season 4 that Anya started aging again at some point.
** Averted by Dawn and Faith, who are both the same age as the actresses playing them, Creator/ElizaDushku was even legally emancipated from her parents so she wouldn't be limited by child labour laws. Dawn was likewise made a couple of years older to match Michelle's age since she was originally written as a preteen. Mercedes [=McNabb=] (Harmony) was also sixteen when the first season was shot.
** The Potentials in season seven are supposed to be teenagers, yet none of them look a day under twenty. Kennedy is said to be nineteen in the script, yet Creator/IyariLimon was twenty-seven at the time. There were some aversions in Lalaine (Chloe) who was sixteen, Clara Bryant (Molly) who was seventeen and Indigo (Rona) who was nineteen.
** Buffy was around five years old when Dawn was born. Gellar is eight years older than Trachtenberg. Sarah Hagan likewise was nineteen playing Amanda, who is implied to be the same age as Dawn.
* DevelopmentHell: The proposed remake film. Creator/WarnerBros purchased the rights to do the film in 2010, and earlier Vertigo Entertainment had expressed interest in doing a reboot film without Creator/JossWhedon to much controversy, with virtually every castmember expressing disapproval. It was also announced that the film would likely be a remake of the 1992 film and have nothing to do with the series with Heather Morris and Creator/CandiceAccola both in talks for the title character, and Creator/KristySwanson expressing interest in a cameo. Whit Anderson had written a script that was rejected in 2011. That's the last we've heard of the project since.
* DistancedFromCurrentEvents: "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E18Earshot Earshot]]", which depicts Jonathan bringing a rifle to school (albeit to kill himself and no one else), was set to air within a week of UsefulNotes/{{Columbine}} and was therefore delayed until after the season finale, which was also delayed in light of Columbine because of the destruction of Sunnydale High School.
* DyeingForYourArt:
** According to Creator/JossWhedon, all three lead actresses had the same brownish auburn hair colour when they were cast. Creator/SarahMichelleGellar eventually bleached her hair blonde for Season 2, Creator/AlysonHannigan went fully redhead, and Creator/CharismaCarpenter darkened hers (which she has kept to the present day).
** Creator/JamesMarsters also had to bleach his hair to play Spike.
** Creator/NicholasBrendon was told by producers to stop working out because they didn't want Xander "looking too buffed." This also resulted in Xander often being dressed in baggy clothing to hide his muscular build. This may have been complicated by his struggles with substance abuse, however.
* ExecutiveMeddling:
** In the pilot, Willow wears drab clothing that her mother picked out for her. Network execs told creator Creator/JossWhedon that they wanted Willow to "look more like Buffy" who wore brighter, preppier, and more stylish clothing. This had a positive result, however, as Whedon decided to give Willow colorful, if geeky clothing, leading to the famous fuzzy sweaters and silly clothes.
** Willow's character was the subject of a lot of meddling. In the unaired pilot, she was played by Riff Regan, who actually looked like she could be a geeky social outcast, as opposed to... say... Creator/AlysonHannigan. She wasn't recast for this reason, however -- she frequently flubbed lines and generally played the character as too nervous.
** But the most famous example of ''Buffy'' meddling involves Creator/TheWB's notoriety for jumping to ridiculous conclusions about what would upset the audience (see also the ''WesternAnimation/XMenEvolution'' example in Western Animation). Remember when the "Graduation" season finale of ''Buffy the Vampire Slayer'' almost didn't air in the wake of the Columbine tragedy? True, it involved the image of a class full of students coming to school armed to the teeth... to ''fight [[BigBad a giant demon-thing]]'' in a showdown between good and evil that had been set-up as the climax for the entire season. This was apparently considered too soon.
*** The WB also postponed the ''Buffy'' episode "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E18Earshot Earshot]]", as the episode involved a plot to mass-murder students (with a RedHerring that it would be by shooting). It was supposed to be the next episode to air following Columbine, so the network instead aired a rerun of "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E6BandCandy Band Candy]]". The irony is that Buffy keeps the character Jonathan from killing himself in "Earshot", which makes it all the more significant that he is the one to give her the Class Protector Award in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E20TheProm The Prom]]", the episode that was originally to air after "Earshot". OutOfOrder like that, it makes little sense.
*** Creator/JossWhedon's comments regarding the decision to postpone "Earshot" indicate that he agreed with it wholeheartedly. However, Joss was very angry about the delaying of the Season Finale, to the point of advising fans to "pirate the damned thing," a rare (maybe unique) instance of a producer encouraging fans to pirate copies of his own show. A key difference was that "Earshot" was not significant in the seasonal arc (likely why Whedon was okay with its postponement), but making viewers wait months to see the payoff of the season-long StoryArc was pretty cruel. TV would be much better without the MoralGuardians.
** Whedon has confirmed that the "Buffy Working At A Fast Food Place" plotline would have been taken further in Season 6, if not for network worries that it would alienate advertisers, who were threatening to pull funding if the story continued.
* ExiledFromContinuity: Season six saw no {{crossover}}s with ''Angel'' due to the show moving from Creator/TheWB to Creator/{{UPN}}. Note that during the First's impersonating the previous {{big bad}}s in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS7E1Lessons Lessons]]", Angelus is notably absent. This was cleared up by the end of season seven so that Angel could appear in the final two episodes, albeit briefly.
* FakeAmerican:
** The Californian Harmony was played by the Canadian Mercedes [=McNab=].
** The Canadian Creator/NathanFillion as the Southern preacher Caleb in season seven.
* FakeBrit:
** Creator/JamesMarsters (American, born in California) as Spike. He based his accent on Anthony Head's real voice.
** Creator/JulietLandau (American, born in California) as Drusilla. Interestingly, while Landau is an American, she really does have an English accent on account of growing up in England. It's just that her ''real'' accent isn't anywhere near as broad or campy as the one she put on to play Drusilla. She later admitted that she gave Dru that accent as a sort of satire of every bad English accent she's ever heard come from an American actor, and as Whedon found it hilarious, they went with it.
** Creator/AlexisDenisof (American, born in Maryland) as Wesley Wyndham-Pryce.
** Clara Bryant and Courtnee Draper (American, born in California and Florida respectively) as Potential Slayers Molly and Annabelle. Their accents are quite horrible.
** The men from the Watchers' Council are played mostly by Americans, with the exception of Alistair Duncan.
** Kali Rocha (American, born in Tennessee) as Cecily in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS5E7FoolForLove Fool For Love]]". If the theory that Cecily and Halfrek are the same person is canon, then this is an in-universe example.
* FakeIrish: Creator/DavidBoreanaz attempts an Irish accent for Angel's past. Emphasis on [[OohMeAccentsSlipping attempt]].
* FakeNationality: Creator/BiancaLawson is American playing Kendra, who WordOfGod confirms is from rural Jamaica.
* FriendshipOnTheSet: Creator/SarahMichelleGellar and Creator/AlysonHannigan were best friends, much like Buffy and Willow. Gellar is still friends with Creator/DavidBoreanaz, Creator/EmmaCaulfield, Creator/SethGreen, Creator/JamesMarsters, Creator/AmberBenson, Creator/CharismaCarpenter and especially Creator/MichelleTrachtenberg.
* GayPanic:
** Inverted when Xander was supposedly in the cards to come out as gay in season four. However, Tara - who was introduced to take Willow's place as a DamselInDistress since the latter was getting too powerful to put in danger - ended up becoming Willow's girlfriend. This was apparently down to the chemistry that developed between Creator/AlysonHannigan and Creator/AmberBenson.
** Another inversion was the introduction of Kennedy in season seven. After Tara's sudden death, Creator/JossWhedon received massive backlash for seemingly employing the BuryYourGays trope. So Kennedy's introduction as a new love interest for Willow is a pretty obvious attempt at damage control. It ended up being the only relationship to survive the televised series.
** In an interview with UK Metro, Creator/JossWhedon was told not to make Willow bisexual in case her same-sex attraction would come off as a phase.
-->If I did it now, I'd be like yes she can be bi. Because some people are! But back then, it was like "No, we're not ready for that".
* HeAlsoDid: Creator/NicholasBrendon (Xander) [[http://verybadkoalas.com/2010/09/29/episode-1/ has a webcomic]].
* HeyItsThatPlace:
** The external (and some internal) shots of Sunnydale High School are of Torrance High, the same school used for the show ''Series/BeverlyHills90210''
** The exterior of Angel's mansion is of Frank Lloyd Wright's Ennis House, a popular shooting location.
** Buffy's old school, Hemery High, is the clock tower made famous in ''Film/BackToTheFuture1''.
** "[[{{Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS4E4FearItself}} Fear Itself]]" took place in what would become better known as the Murder House house in ''Series/AmericanHorrorStoryMurderHouse''.
** The battle between the Slayers and Kakistos ("[[{{Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E3FaithHopeAndTrick}} Faith, Hope, and Trick]]") takes place inside L.A. Firestation 23, also used as HQ for the ''Franchise/{{Ghostbusters}}.''
** The Gentlemen are seen floating down the same street that later served as [[Series/DesperateHousewives Wisteria Lane.]]
* HostilityOnTheSet:
** Reports had come out in the years after the show ended regarding backstage tension and difficulties between producers, cast, and crew. This came to a breaking point in 2021 with numerous cast members acknowledging the issue, which lead to an [[https://variety.com/2021/tv/features/joss-whedon-buffy-angel-charisma-carpenter-toxic-workplace-1234915549/ in-depth expose]] by Adam B. Vary and Elizabeth Wagmeister for ''Variety'', who stated, "[t]he series was set at a California high school beset by vampires, demons and toxic mean girls, but it turns out its real-life {{big bad}} was the show’s creator, Creator/JossWhedon." The general opinion of Whedon was that he was a talented ShowRunner who collaborated well, but also a tyrant who forged a CultOfPersonality around himself that only grew as he became [[CreatorWorship a geek icon seen as the driving force behind the success]] of ''Buffy''. Between Whedon's inexperience running a TV show, the low-budget show's heavy reliance on special effects, the long hours, the young cast, and the lack of supervision by the studio, the atmosphere on the set of ''Buffy'' quickly turned into something resembling its HighSchool setting, with Whedon as its AlphaBitch: treating his inner circle well and regarding them as TrueCompanions, and everybody else like dirt and subjecting them to bullying and scorn. As such, many people have horror stories about the production of both ''Buffy'' and ''Series/{{Angel}}''.
** Creator/JamesMarsters has [[https://www.comicbookmovie.com/tv/buffy_the_vampire_slayer/buffy-the-vampire-slayer-star-james-marsters-on-aggressive-disturbing-interaction-with-joss-whedon-a176820#gs.aylwza stated]] that Whedon reacted ''very'' negatively to Spike's EnsembleDarkHorse status. He envisioned the show's vampires purely as AlwaysChaoticEvil villains and the audience reaction to Spike as a romantic hero (and presumably network execs wanting him to stick around) caused him to lash out in anger at Marsters, backing him against the wall and saying "I don't care how popular you are, you're dead!" Marsters viewed it as the stress of managing a chaotic production, but in light of later allegations against Whedon he admitted it takes on a different tone.
** Few had as miserable a time working on ''Buffy'' and ''Angel'' as Creator/CharismaCarpenter. In 2021, she [[https://twitter.com/AllCharisma/status/1359537746843365381 went public]] with long-rumored allegations surrounding her time on ''Buffy'' and ''Angel'', which inspired the ''Variety'' article. She said that Whedon played favorites with actors on set and pit them against each other to win his approval, that she was overworked to the point where it caused her physical harm, and that she only stayed on [[MoneyDearBoy for the steady paycheck]], all while justifying his behavior in her mind because she didn't want to admit she was being harassed. The ''Variety'' article notes she was a network-mandated hire, which grated on Whedon, who wanted complete control and would be dismissive of her performance. Whedon in turn was frustrated by Carpenter's tardiness. She also suffered from anxiety which caused her to struggle with her lines and marks, which frustrated Whedon, who was obsessed with word-perfect dialogue. Long before this was revealed, it was known that her pregnancy in the fourth season of ''Angel'' caused a lot of friction between her and Whedon, but he seemed to take the reveal personally (suggesting she get an abortion), which ended with Cordelia being written out of the fifth season in a manner that left a lot of bad blood, not least because Carpenter only found out from the press. She was eventually brought back for the fifth-season episode [[Recap/AngelS05E12YoureWelcome "You're Welcome"]], [[spoiler:only for Cordelia to be KilledOffForReal after Whedon [[LyingCreator promised her he wouldn't do so]]]]. By her account, Carpenter was in tears when she realized how she was being written out of the show. In 2022, she referred to him as her "former tyrannical, narcissitic boss who is still unable to be accountable or just apologise". Gellar, Trachtenberg, Marsters, Creator/AmberBenson (who described the onset atmosphere as toxic), Creator/NicholasBrendon, Creator/AnthonyHead, Creator/DavidBoreanaz, Creator/ElizaDushku, Creator/EmmaCaulfield, Creator/JulieBenz, Creator/ClareKramer, Creator/AdamBusch, Creator/DannyStrong, Creator/TomLenk, Jonathan M. Woodward and James C. Leary either backed up her claims and/or lent their support.
** Creator/MichelleTrachtenberg's mother was horrified by some of the raunchy jokes that were regularly thrown around backstage. Reportedly, this hit the teenage Trachtenberg herself, who later accused Whedon of inappropriate behavior; while she didn't go into detail, she claimed that he wasn't allowed to be alone in a room with her after an exchange that several crew members believed crossed a line. Although Whedon would later deny that such a rule existed, interviews with the show's crew confirmed that it did, but was not so much a rule forbidding Whedon from one-on-one alone time with her as it was a guideline that she was not to be left alone with him, which Whedon may not have actually been informed about.
** In 2017, Whedon's ex-wife Kai Cole wrote an open letter accusing him of having had several affairs throughout their marriage, including with women he worked with on his shows. Some of the sources in the ''Variety'' article corroborated Cole's claims that Whedon was having affairs with female employees, though all of the actresses from those shows have denied he ever made advances towards them.
** By various accounts that have circulated from the set of ''Buffy'' and interviews later on, Creator/SarahMichelleGellar was one of two things: [[ThePrimaDonna a diva]] who let fame get to her head (especially after doing ''Film/IKnowWhatYouDidLastSummer'' and ''Film/Scream2'' before the second season filmed), or a ConsummateProfessional who was committed to her work, and as such avoided the media and didn't fraternize much with the rest of the cast and crew. Not that Gellar didn't have reason to be grumpy, though. Her working relationship with Whedon fell apart fairly early in the show's run, to the point that she did not want his name spoken around her, likely contributing to her losing interest in the show. Season six, which fandom consensus generally holds to be the show's [[SeasonalRot creative low point]], seems to have been the point where she gave up on the show completely. She was already unhappy about the ChannelHop from Creator/TheWB to Creator/{{UPN}}, and the decision to pair Buffy up with Spike in a destructive relationship was one that she protested against, feeling that it was out-of-character and that Buffy's relationship with Angel was the one that mattered. The fact that Whedon was [[AttentionDeficitCreatorDisorder also working on]] ''Angel'' and ''Series/{{Firefly}}'' during this time, and had stepped aside as ShowRunner on ''Buffy'', made matters worse, as she felt that she had nobody to appeal to when she disagreed with creative decisions. After Carpenter made her allegations against Whedon, Gellar quickly supported her, saying that, while she was proud to be associated with Buffy Summers, she wanted nothing to do with Whedon.
** ''Buffy''[='=]s stunt coordinator/second unit director Jeff Pruitt and Gellar's StuntDouble (and Pruitt's wife) Sophia Crawford feuded with both Whedon and Gellar, which contributed to their departure. They have [[https://metro.co.uk/2020/07/12/egomaniac-joss-whedon-faces-claims-buffy-stunt-double-12942160/ said]] that Whedon let the show's growing popularity and critical acclaim go to his head, and that, while he started the show as a humble guy who regularly turned to Pruitt for help shooting fight scenes, he turned into an egomaniac. The last straw was when Whedon demanded that Pruitt and Crawford end their romance if they wanted to keep working on the show. Pruitt also claimed that the production had installed a keylogger on his computer, allowing the producers access to all of his emails. As for Gellar, Pruitt wrote [[http://web.archive.org/web/20000619003429/http://www.mcs.net/~jcomroe/Knight.html a short fantasy story]] that was a thinly-veiled RomanAClef of his and Sophia's feelings regarding working with her, and while he would later disown it and be more diplomatic regarding her later on, saying that she'd mellowed out since, he still [[http://buffyangelshow.fr/buffy/dossiers/jeff-pruitt-sophia-crawford-the-interview/ believes]] that, back then, Gellar had a tendency to WagTheDirector with the way scenes were shot and that she had grown jealous of Crawford during the third season. Whedon, for his part, [[https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/alt.tv.buffy-v-slayer/jIAqP0884z0 countered]] that Pruitt and Crawford weren't blameless in their departure, and that Pruitt had an ego of his own, seeing himself "as a noble knight being plotted against by evil courtiers, [which] really doesn't help."
** Creator/AlysonHannigan, once close friends with Gellar, was not on speaking terms with her by the time the show wrapped. In a post-series interview, she blamed her for putting her out of a job without any warning (Gellar chose to end the show after the seventh season through an announcement in ''Entertainment Weekly''), and said that Gellar was getting sick of working on the show as early as the third season, though she was quick to praise Gellar's work ethic. However, time (and mutual parenthood) seems to heal all wounds, and the evidence indicates that Hannigan and Gellar are friends again.
** Darla was reportedly written out of the first season more quickly than intended because of conflict between Creator/JulieBenz and the regular cast members, especially Hannigan, who claimed that Benz was mean to her. Fortunately, she later mellowed out enough for Whedon to bring her back for a couple of guest spots, and eventually a recurring role on ''Angel''. By the 2000s, Benz and Hannigan had patched things up and could be seen exchanging pleasantries on Twitter.
** While Creator/EmmaCaulfield has never named names, she has [[https://gregstacy.wordpress.com/2006/12/21/emma-caulfield-on-buffy%E2%80%99s-final-days/ said]] that, by season 7, she felt "very unappreciated" and "continually disrespected" by certain people involved with the show, and that they had made her experience working on ''Buffy'' miserable.
** According to Caulfield, Creator/NicholasBrendon and Creator/DavidBoreanaz never really got along. For the twentieth anniversary reunion, Boreanaz reportedly had Brendon blocked from the photoshoot, possibly due to his substance abuse issues (he was inserted in later). It's worth noting that Boreanaz was close friends with his late ''Angel'' co-star Creator/GlennQuinn, who had a drug problem that resulted in his premature death.
** Season six is arguably the show's most divisive season, but few people were and are as open and vocal about that as Gellar herself. Her grievances? Where to begin? For starters, she was ''very'' unhappy about the {{channel hop}} from Creator/TheWB to Creator/{{UPN}}, eliminating the chances for crossovers with ''Angel''. She was also quite upset about the decision to pair Buffy and Spike in a mutually destructive relationship (Gellar is an outspoken Buffy/Angel shipper, calling them "soul mates"), and the graphic sexual nature of their scenes made her very uncomfortable (she's reported to have said "If I wanted to do porn, I'd do porn!"), finding it disrespectful to her and her character. Finally, she felt the dark and depressing nature of the season was out of tone with the show and that the Buffy she was playing was unrecognisable from the one she and the fans knew and loved. With Whedon largely hands-off this season to work on the third season of ''Angel'' and ''Series/{{Firefly}}'', she had no-one to vent her complaints to. It reportedly got so bad that she almost quit the series after this season, but ultimately stayed on for a final season, with a few conditions, among them Whedon returning as ShowRunner and a significantly lighter tone.
** In an interview for the book ''Into Every Generation a Slayer is Born'', Creator/AmberBenson [[https://www.reddit.com/r/buffy/comments/woa9zi/from_the_book_into_every_generation_a_slayer_is/ stated]] that she was having issues with somebody on the show that were coming to a head just as her character Tara left, and that, despite many fan requests to bring Tara back (including Whedon reaching out to her personally), she refused to return to the show because it would've meant interacting with them again. While she didn't name names, many fans have speculated that the person she was talking about was Creator/AlysonHannigan, who played Willow, rather ironically given that the romance between Willow and Tara was one of the show's most popular pairings.
* IAmNotSpock:
** Although Creator/SarahMichelleGellar did become a star in the late 90s and 2000s, she's still best known as Buffy Summers. She even says that when she's acting [[IAmNotLeonardNimoy she's just playing Sarah in a costume]]. Buffy is her most remembered role twenty years later.
** In contrast to Creator/AnthonyStewartHead and Creator/AlysonHannigan - who moved onto ''Series/Merlin2008'' and ''Series/HowIMetYourMother'' quite soon - Creator/NicholasBrendon never had another notable role and to this day is best known as Xander.
** Creator/AmberBenson ultimately retired from acting and became an author instead, so Tara is her best-known role.
* KilledByRequest: Anya became the only regular character permanently killed off in the GrandFinale, because Creator/EmmaCaulfield had no interest in playing the character again and asked for it, though she was reportedly taken aback by how sudden and brutal the character's death was.
* LoopingLines: Creator/AnthonyStewartHead had to loop many of his lines as Giles in order to incorporate the character's mild stutter. This was such a hassle that Head declared he would never play a character with a speech impediment again.
* MakingUseOfTheTwin: Creator/NicholasBrendon's twin brother Kelly Schultz (their real last name) worked as his stunt double, and they also brought him in to play Xander's magically created double in season five's "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS5E3TheReplacement The Replacement]]".
* OnlyBarelyRenewed: Having filmed all twelve episodes of season one before any were transmitted, the cast and crew had no idea how popular the show would turn out to be, or if they would be called back to film more episodes. Creator/AnthonyStewartHead even returned to the UK to play magician Adam Klaus in ''Series/JonathanCreek''. Luckily, the producers released him so that he could continue to play Giles when the show was picked up again.
* TheOtherDarrin:
** Creator/KristySwanson played Buffy in the movie, but Creator/SarahMichelleGellar took over for the TV show because Kristy was thought too old to play a sixteen-year-old at the age of twenty-eight. Likewise, Donald Sutherland played Merrick in the movie and is portrayed by Richard Riehle in a flashback to Buffy discovering she's a Slayer.
** Nikki Wood, the second slayer Spike kills, is played by a stuntwoman in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS5E7FoolForLove Fool For Love]]". When The First assumes her shape in Season 7, she was recast as a more vulnerable-looking actress.
* TheOtherMarty:
** Riff Regan played Willow in the unaired Proof of Concept to sell the show but never intended to play her in the series.
** Another actress was cast as Anya, but dropped out when she found out it was only for two guest spots. Creator/EmmaCaulfield took over and eventually became a regular for the rest of the series.
* PlayingAgainstType:
** So Creator/SethGreen isn't the PluckyComicRelief?
** Creator/NathanFillion as the sadistic, satanic serial killer working for the Big Bad (If you take the First Evil to be Satan and that Caleb had killed people ForTheEvulz before meeting it).
** Creator/EmmaCaulfield noted that she rarely got to play wacky characters like Anya before or after. Indeed this is reflected in how Anya starts out as a much [[CharacterizationMarchesOn more serious persona before developing her wacky side as the series goes on]].
* PostScriptSeason: The fifth season ended with Buffy dying heroically to save Dawn and, [[ApocalypseMaiden by extension]], all reality; the episode even ended with a shot of her gravestone ("She saved the world. A lot."). It was picked up for two more seasons on a different channel. Even after the series was cancelled for good, it received a comic book continuation starting with ''[[ComicBook/BuffyTheVampireSlayer Buffy: Season 8]]''.
* ProductionPosse: Several actors who had starred in ''{{Series/Firefly}}'' had smaller parts on both this and ''Angel''. Notably Creator/NathanFillion as Caleb. Jonathan M Woodward played Holden in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS7E7ConversationsWithDeadPeople Conversations With Dead People]]" and Tracy in ''Firefly'''s "[[Recap/FireflyE12TheMessage The Message]]" (as well as Knox on ''Angel'').
* PromotedFangirl:
** Creator/MichelleTrachtenberg was a huge fan of ''Buffy'' before being signed onto the show, and once told Joss "There was never a ''Buffy'' episode that sucked. I love you!"
** Creator/JulieBenz was a fan of the movie.
* QueerCharacterQueerActor:
** In November 2008, Creator/TomLenk came out as gay in ''The Advocate'' magazine. Creator/JossWhedon was interviewed for the article, and revealed that it was decided that the character of Andrew was to be gay when they decided to cast Lenk in the role.
** Kennedy is a lesbian, played by bisexual actress Iyari Limon.
* RealLifeWritesTheHairstyle:
** Willow is portrayed as a redhead for the whole series because Creator/JossWhedon wanted the three lead actresses to differentiate themselves - and Alyson Hannigan volunteered to go that colour (she is naturally brunette).
** Buffy chops off her hair in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS6E11Gone Gone]]" in a fit of depression. This was because Creator/SarahMichelleGellar had asked to cut her hair and they wrote it into the episode.
** Gellar had her hair cut shorter, and dyed blonder, for her part in ''Film/Scream2'', which she filmed in the summer between seasons one and two. Xander comments on her new hair in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS2E1WhenSheWasBad When She Was Bad]]".
** Gellar was only available for three days to film "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS7E5Selfless Selfless]]", as she was getting married to Creator/FreddiePrinzeJr that week. Drew Goddard said in his DVDCommentary for the episode that her hair in the show (the little braid at the side of her head) was her "wedding hair".
** In "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E17Enemies Enemies]]", Oz has blonde hair, as Creator/SethGreen had just finished filming ''Film/AustinPowersTheSpyWhoShaggedMe''.
* RealitySubtext: Creator/KristineSutherland was the daughter of a single mother too, and took inspiration from her own mother to help create Joyce's persona.
* RecastAsARegular:
** Creator/TomLenk plays a vampire lackey to Harmony a few seasons before playing Tucker's brother (and a member of the Trio).
** Subverted with Kali Rocha. She played Spike's girlfriend Cecily in his flashback in "Fool For Love", and was later cast as the demon Halfrek in Season 6. They had her say "William?" when she sees him to imply that the two were the same person. Likewise a flashback in "Selfless" was rewritten from the Renaissance to the Russian Revolution to accommodate this.
* RecycledSet: For the first season, there was only one hall for Sunnydale High school because of a tight budget so they reused the same hall over and over again, redressing it in different ways.
* RecycledTheSeries: Although not so much recycled as "remade properly" according to Creator/JossWhedon's vision.
* RoleEndingMisdemeanor: Creator/JulieBenz was removed early on from the show in part due to tensions on set during Season 1. Creator/AlysonHannigan has hinted in interviews that Benz was very mean towards her in particular. The incident prompted Benz to clean up her act, and she reappeared on ''Series/{{Angel}}'' and was brought back for a few more ''Buffy'' episodes. Years later, she was regarded by the cast and crew of ''Series/{{Dexter}}'' as one of the nicest and most agreeable cast members.
* RomanceOnTheSet:
** Here's an odd one: Creator/AmberBenson and Creator/AdamBusch, who played Tara ([[spoiler:murder victim]]) and Warren ([[spoiler:her murderer]]) respectively.
** Creator/AlysonHannigan (Willow) married Creator/AlexisDenisof (Wesley), though they didn't begin dating until after Denisof had moved on to ''Series/{{Angel}}''. This created an amusing incident where Willow guest starred on ''Angel'' and acts like old friends with Wesley even though they never really interacted before.
** Hannigan admitted to having an off-camera fling with Creator/NicholasBrendon:
-->I think Nick and I might have kissed once, like off camera. He might have had a boob or something.
* ScullyBox:
** Creator/SarahMichelleGellar had to stand on a box just so she could be seen in the same frame as the much taller Creator/DavidBoreanaz. The later seasons had her wear high heels to have Buffy appear taller than Dawn.
** Creator/JamesMarsters has admitted that he would wear lifts in his shoes so that he would look about equal height to Boreanaz.
** Though it was bizarrely ''not'' used during Buffy's romance with Riley, with the 6'2" Marc Blucas (who'd even hoped to become a pro basketball player before getting into acting) having to practically bend himself in half to kiss Gellar.
** In "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS6E7OnceMoreWithFeeling Once More, With Feeling]]", for a scene where Willow and Tara walk through the park, Creator/AlysonHannigan can be seen wearing high heels in order to minimise the three-inch height difference between herself and Creator/AmberBenson.
* SeparatedAtBirthCasting: Creator/KristineSutherland and Creator/SarahMichelleGellar look remarkably like mother and daughter. Creator/MichelleTrachtenberg also very much passes for Sarah's sister.
* SerendipityWritesThePlot: When people kept telling Creator/JossWhedon that the dialogue was what made the show great, he said "That's the only thing really great about the show? Fine, I'll do an episode with no dialogue." - thus "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS4E10Hush Hush]]" was written.
* ShrugOfGod: Creator/JossWhedon was originally shocked at people shipping Buffy and Faith. But when one fan had him look at her website, where she analysed all the LesYay scenes between them, he later said the fans were spot on about the subtext between the Slayers.
* SparedByTheCut:
** Spike was supposed to be killed off in his introductory season. Firstly when the organ falls on him in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS2E10WhatsMyLinePart2 What's My Line Part Two]]", secondly, Angelus was supposed to kill him in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS2E14Innocence Innocence]]" and make his move on Drusilla. The crew loved Creator/JamesMarsters so much that he was kept on.
** Oz was supposed to be murdered by Angelus in season two, but his popularity with fans saved him, so Jenny was killed off instead.
** Angel was supposed to stay dead after season two, until plans for his own show were made.
** "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E14BadGirls Bad Girls]]" was supposed to end with Buffy confronting Faith in her motel, only to find that she's hanged herself out of guilt for murdering a human. It was decided to keep her on as an antagonist.
** Xander was going to be killed by Caleb in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS7E18DirtyGirls Dirty Girls]]" and The First Evil would take his form to torment Buffy. It was decided that with the finale approaching, there wasn't enough time to mourn him properly, so he lost an eye instead.
** In at least one draft of the script for "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS7E22Chosen Chosen]]", Potential Slayer Amanda doesn't die. In the filmed episode, she falls to the ground in front of Buffy with an apparently fatal wound. Creator/JossWhedon supposedly made the change due to learning how popular her character was becoming and wanting to amp up the sense of loss in the final battle.
** Early finale script drafts also had Xander die in the battle while the grieving Anya survives. In the actual episode, it's the other way around.
* StarMakingRole: Some careers were launched by the show.
** Creator/SarahMichelleGellar - despite falling victim to IAmNotLeonardNimoy eventually - did become a superstar for a good portion of the 90s and 2000s. ''Film/IKnowWhatYouDidLastSummer'', ''Film/ScoobyDoo'', ''Film/CruelIntentions'', ''{{Film/Scream 2}}'' and ''Film/TheGrudge'' were all notable hits that she headlined.
** Creator/AlysonHannigan got launched onto the ''Film/AmericanPie'' films thanks to ''Buffy'' and later hit it even bigger with ''Series/HowIMetYourMother''. Before this series, her only notable role was in ''Film/MyStepmotherIsAnAlien''.
** Creator/DavidBoreanaz was a complete unknown who was discovered walking his dog. It wasn't until Season 2 that producers considered him headlining [[{{Series/Angel}} his own show]]. And then headlining [[{{Series/Bones}} another]].
** Creator/ElizaDushku did quite well, netting a prominent role in ''Film/BringItOn'' and later getting her own shows in ''Series/TruCalling'' and ''Series/{{Dollhouse}}''.
* StuntCasting:
** They attempted to cast Music/BritneySpears as Warren's android girlfriend April in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS5E15IWasMadeToLoveYou I Was Made To Love You]]".
** Broadway veteran Creator/JoelGrey was cast in a relatively small but plot-pivotal role as NotSoHarmlessVillain Doc in a few episodes in the second half of Season Five.
** Much later, they attempted to cast Miss Spears again in a one-off villain role in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS7E14FirstDate First Date]]". The part eventually went to slightly less famous fellow pop singer Music/{{Ashanti}}.
* StuntDouble: Creator/SarahMichelleGellar was doubled by Sophia Crawford for the first four seasons and Michele Waitman and Melissa Barker for the remainder of the series. Gellar, who studied martial arts, was keen to do more of her own stunts, but wasn't allowed to.
* SurprisinglyLenientCensor: In the DVDCommentary to "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS4E10Hush Hush]]", Creator/JossWhedon expresses amazement that a masturbation joke was allowed in.
* TechnologyMarchesOn:
** The cast would have been saved from many a scrape if they'd just had cellphones. Quite a few episodes use a character being in peril and unable to contact Buffy as a plot device. This wasn't a big deal in the earlier seasons, but the show hit it big just as cellphones were starting to become mainstream, so after a few years it began to seem rather odd, especially since the cast was full of teenagers (later, young adults), the group most likely to carry a cellphone. This was lampshaded at the start of the final season (in September 2002) when Buffy gives her sister Dawn "a weapon" to help protect herself, which turns out to be a cellphone. From then on most of the cast had cellphones -- although ironically, they hardly ever needed to use them, since that season also saw every single character move into Buffy's house. One episode reveals that Giles ''does'' indeed own a pager, joking that they should page him if the apocalypse happens when he's not around.
** Two notable examples from the second season: when Angel loses his soul and reverts to evil, the information that Willow needed to restore Angel's soul was stored on a 3 1/2 inch floppy disk that fell between desks. Earlier, Joyce's boyfriend [[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS2E11Ted Ted]], who worked for a computer company, curried favor with Willow by giving her freebies from work, including a new hard drive with a gargantuan capacity of ''9 gigabytes'' -- a tad more than a $15 USB drive could hold little more than a decade later.
*** The BigBad of season 4, a cyborg/demon crossbreed named Adam, is also seen inserting floppy disks into a slot in his chest, which causes more hilarity in the present-day age of streaming and the internet, than the intended impact of awe and suspense in 2001.
** None other than Creator/MichelleTrachtenberg says she experienced this when she became a writer. Having been so used to her time on ''Buffy'', she struggled to make her stories work in the age of cellphones and widespread internet.
--> "Buffy lived in a world where social media and cellphones weren't a part of the story. You couldn't Google "blah blah blah demon." You had to go physically to the magic shop and find a book. You cannot re-create that today."
* ThrowItIn:
** The famous Creator/MutantEnemy title card was reportedly scribbled by Whedon with only seconds to go until broadcast.
** In "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS2E14Innocence Innocence]]", The scene where Angel dumps Buffy in his apartment was originally supposed to take place on Buffy's lawn. Halfway through shooting the scene, SMG and David Boreanaz told Joss that the scene wasn't working, so he moved it to the bedroom. Buffy can still be heard saying she saw him "at the house". She was so LostInCharacter afterwards they had to close down the set for half an hour, being that invested in the romance.
** The gag in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E18Earshot Earshot]]" with Giles walking into a tree was ad-libbed by Creator/AnthonyStewartHead. He never dreamed Joss would keep in the cut.
** In the [[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E22GraduationDayPart2 Season Three finale]], Cordelia [[SecurityCling cowers behind]] the diminutive Jonathan. According to Danny Strong, this scene was an idea of Charisma's, because she was leaving for ''Angel'' and never got much screen time with him.
** Not in the original work but in the motion comic ''Anywhere But Here'' there is a scene where Kennedy guesses Willow is upset about Tara's death. A line's added that makes her look like Queen Bitch.
** The scene in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS1E2TheHarvest The Harvest]]" where the Master blinds a vampire and says "you've got something in your eye" was added to fill time.
** Kali Rocha was cast as Halfrek in Season 6 after having briefly played Spike's human love interest Cecily in a flashback. Knowing that eagle-eyed viewers would notice, they wrote in Halfrek saying "William?" when she sees Spike, and Spike rejoining with "Hey, wait a minute..."
** Joss joked that he was going to kill Anya off in "The Gift" - when she pushes Xander out of the way of some falling bricks - but Emma Caulfield kept moving too much in the final scene with all the survivors.
** Willow running off the stage during the Scooby Gang's TalentShow performance in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS1E9ThePuppetShow The Puppet Show]]" was improvised by Alyson Hannigan.
* TributeToFido: Creator/JossWhedon gave Riley the last name of "Finn", after hearing executive producer Marti Noxon talking about taking her dog, Finn, to the vet.
* TrollingCreator: David Fury wrote in many scenes of Buffy laughing just to troll Sarah Michelle Gellar, who hates laughing on camera.
* TroubledProduction: As detailed in [[https://variety.com/2021/tv/features/joss-whedon-buffy-angel-charisma-carpenter-toxic-workplace-1234915549/ this Variety piece]], a slew of allegations against ShowRunner Creator/JossWhedon that surfaced nearly two decades after the show ended showed that production of the series, and by extension ''Series/{{Angel}}'', was far more troubled than originally thought.
** For starters, the budget was often stretched to its limit against the effects-driven nature of the show, and was OnlyBarelyRenewed after its first season thanks to rave reviews and hitting key demographics among otherwise unimpressive ratings. ExecutiveMeddling haunted the show throughout its run with Warner execs often jumpy regarding the content of the HighSchool-set show, and regularly fought attempts at LGBTQI+ representation.
** Long days of shooting led to exhaustion. Actors in heavy makeup could look forward to 21-hour work days, and it was not uncommon for shooting on Fridays to carry through to the early hours of Saturday (coining the term "Fraterdays" on the set), severely limiting the amount of weekend recovery time. Creator/ElizaDushku was legally emancipated from her parents just so her hours wouldn't be limited by child labour laws, and Creator/CharismaCarpenter later said the cast was so overworked that it led to physical harm.
** Following reports that Joss Whedon created a toxic work environment during reshoots on ''Film/JusticeLeague2017'', numerous persons involved with ''Buffy'' stepped forward to tell their own stories regarding Whedon; While viewed as cordial and collaborative by executives, Whedon was also a "casually cruel" and egotistical ControlFreak to those beneath his rank, creating a cliquish CultOfPersonality around himself as his status as an icon of geek fandom grew:
*** Charisma Carpenter was already on the bad side of Whedon from the outset by being a studio-mandated hire, while her reported "tardiness" backstage irked the producers. The breaking point, [[https://twitter.com/AllCharisma/status/1359537746843365381 Carpenter has claimed]], came when her pregnancy during the fourth season of ''Angel'' infuriated Whedon, who went as far as to pressure Carpenter to terminate her pregnancy to stay on the show. Cordelia Chase was written off behind her back and later KilledOffForReal after she refused.
*** Creator/MichelleTrachtenberg was a regular subject of inappropriate and sexist jokes backstage, enough so that her family was alarmed at her treatment. Trachtenberg also clamed that an argument between her and Whedon resulted in Whedon saying... ''[[FridgeHorror something]]'', which was so extreme that a rule came down stating she was not to be left alone with Whedon again.
*** Creator/JamesMarsters claimed that [[https://www.comicbookmovie.com/tv/buffy_the_vampire_slayer/buffy-the-vampire-slayer-star-james-marsters-on-aggressive-disturbing-interaction-with-joss-whedon-a176820#gs.aylwza the unexpected popularity of his character]] angered Whedon, who blamed Marsters personally. Whedon went as far as to back Marsters up against a wall and threaten him, and continually took out frustrations related to the character on Marsters throughout production.
*** Stunt Coordinator/Second Unit Director Jeff Pruitt and StuntDouble Sophia Crawford had [[https://metro.co.uk/2020/07/12/egomaniac-joss-whedon-faces-claims-buffy-stunt-double-12942160/ serious problems with Whedon]], who increasingly ignored Pruitt and became angered when Pruitt and Crawford [[RomanceOnTheSet became engaged while working on the show]]. The last straw was when Whedon demanded they end their relationship to keep working, to which they both refused. Whedon, for his part, claimed that [[https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/alt.tv.buffy-v-slayer/jIAqP0884z0 they were not blameless in their departure]], particularly citing Pruitt for his own ego issues.
** Whedon was not the only one igniting HostilityOnTheSet. Creator/SarahMichelleGellar also received a fair share of blame with her co-stars and [[http://buffyangelshow.fr/buffy/dossiers/jeff-pruitt-sophia-crawford-the-interview/ stunt double]] accusing her of [[ThePrimaDonna diva]]-[[WagTheDirector like]] behavior, especially after [[Film/IKnowWhatYouDidLastSummer launching her]] [[Film/Scream2 film career]]. Geller had her own problems with Whedon, to the point that she became disinterested in the show as early as the third season, while the creative decisions of season six nearly caused her to leave the show entirely. While remaining diplomatic regarding the show and the character of Buffy, Gellar [[https://www.instagram.com/p/CLH4s_WjfZF/ later distanced herself from Whedon]] in the face of the various allegations.
* UnfinishedEpisode:
** According to Creator/NicholasBrendon, he and Creator/SarahMichelleGellar proposed a storyline for season seven where Xander and Buffy get together romantically. Their idea was shot down, and they continued with the Buffy-Spike relationship.
** There was going to be an episode in season seven where Buffy is granted one wish from The Powers That Be and would ponder what to do with (bring her mother back, restore Angel's humanity, etc). The ending would have her visit Willow sporting a fancy new pair of shoes. Willow would ask if she used her wish on shoes, to which Buffy says, "Of course not", before revealing that she used it to bring Tara back. This was scrapped when Creator/AmberBenson wasn't available. However Benson claimed she was never told that and was only told she would be coming back as evil and that she ultimately didn't trust Whedon not to betray her character.
* WagTheDirector:
** Creator/SarahMichelleGellar begged Creator/JossWhedon not to kill Joyce, because she grew up with a single mom too, and didn't want to have Buffy become an orphan.
** Spike wasn't meant to last long but Creator/JamesMarsters wanted a job, so he played lines that were meant to be dismissive of Drusilla as instead reacting to her like the most doting boyfriend. [[EnsembleDarkhorse It worked]]. He also hated the infamous AttemptedRape scene in "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS6E19SeeingRed Seeing Red]]" so much that he had a clause added to his contract stating that he would never have to do anything like that again.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: [[WhatCouldHaveBeen/BuffyTheVampireSlayer Has its own page]].
* WhyFandomCantHaveNiceThings: Creator/MichelleTrachtenberg avoided conventions for a while after a fan gave her an envelope with all his eyelashes inside.
* WordOfGay:
** Creator/JaneEspenson opined that Giles and Ethan may have had some sexual history in their younger days.
** Creator/ElizaDushku stated that she portrayed Faith to have a romantic interest in Buffy:
-->I think Faith probably swings both ways, she had a definite thing for Buffy. There were a lot of innuendos, there was a lot of heat there.
** In an interview with ''The Advocate'' magazine, Creator/JossWhedon confirmed Andrew's hinted homosexuality, stating that it was inspired by Creator/TomLenk:
-->Tom has a bit of a fey thing going on in his persona that, you know, you can't really deny. When I first looked at his audition tape, I said "OK, he, uh, he seems kinda gay. Do we want to make that decision [about the character]? There's no reason why he couldn't be, so, great, let's pick the funniest actor". [...] The character became very charming in his complete lack of awareness about, among other things, his own sexuality.
* WordOfGod: In later seasons, questions not answered in the actual show tended to be addressed only in Creator/JossWhedon's interviews. Some fans considered anything Joss said in an interview to be canon, while others did not and were annoyed by this practice.
** Drew Goddard revealed on the commentary for "[[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS6E22Grave Grave]]" that Buffy saw her mother in Heaven, which explains her state of depression in season six.
* WordOfSaintPaul: Kali Rocha has said that she believes Halfrek was already a vengeance demon by the time she knew Spike, and the party she was at in "Fool For Love" was an assignment (making Cecily just a cover).
* WriteWhatYouKnow: According to Creator/JamesMarsters, a lot of the show's darkness came from the writer's personal experiences. Creator/JossWhedon would ask the team for "their worst day", the worst thing they've done, the thing they've buried and don't talk about.
* WriteWhoYouKnow:
** Creator/JossWhedon based Cordelia Chase on a girl with whom his wife attended high school, and Xander Harris on himself. According to Creator/NicholasBrendon, this is why Xander "gets all the good lines".
** Whedon said of Oz:
-->The only character that was really ever based on somebody I knew is Oz. There was a guy in college I knew, who was short, played guitar, very quiet, incredibly cool, named Oz, and somehow I sort of extrapolated from that and worked him in as a character on the show.
* WritingByTheSeatOfYourPants: Angel's extremely vague writing (plus comfortably standing in partial sunlight a couple times) in the first few episodes was because the crew started out with basically no idea what the deal was with him. His name was actually a holdover from one early idea that he was a literal angel who'd been expelled from Heaven and was trying to earn his way back.
* YouLookFamiliar:
** Spice Williams plays the police instructor who tries to murder Buffy, Patrice, in "What's My Line?" She also appeared in "[[{{Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E13TheZeppo}} The Zeppo]]" as a member of the Sisterhood of Jhe, and later turned up on ''Angel'' as a convict hired to kill Faith in prison.
** Creator/JeffKober first appeared in the season three episode "[[{{Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS3E12Helpless}} Helpless]]" as a vampire named Kralik. He appeared again during season six as the warlock Rack.
** Brian Thompson portrays the vampire "Luke" in season 1, as well as the demon called "The Judge" in season 2.
** Kali Rocha played both Cecily, the woman who spurned Spike when he was William the human poet, and the vengeance demon Helfrek. Halfrek and Spike actually recognize each other in her first appearance, then embarrassedly deny knowing each other. WordOfGod confirms that Halfrek = Cecily. Although, when speaking to Anya, Halfrek mentioned "...that thing during the Crimean War. We laugh about it now." The Crimean War happened before Spike was turned, so either Cecily was already a vengeance demon in disguise or there's TimeTravel involved.

!!The comics:
* ApprovalOfGod: Creator/JossWhedon's original script for the film was adapted into the comic book ''The Origin'' which served as a prequel to the series. Whedon approved of this.
-->The origin comic, though I have issues with it, CAN pretty much be accepted as canonical. They did a cool job of combining the movie script (the SCRIPT) with the series, that was nice, and using the series Merrick and not a certain OTHER thespian who shall remain hated.
* CreatorsFavorite: Christos Gage, who would often bring the guest character during the seasons he wrote, has multiple times mentioned Harmony as his favorite character to write: "It's such a blast to write someone who is completely and utterly self-absorbed".
* CreatorsPest: While Creator/JossWhedon loved Kennedy despite the fans' hatred of her, the other writers grew to hate her as much as said fans.
* SequelInAnotherMedium: Season Eight onward follows on from what happened after the Hellmouth in Sunnydale was finally destroyed and all the potential Slayers were activated at once rather than one at a time when one dies.
* ScheduleSlip: This happened with the last ''Spike'' issue of season nine.

!!Novels
* KeepCirculatingTheTapes: ''Go Ask Malice: A Slayer's Diary'', is one of the most popular and well-known Buffyverse novels, but it is also out of print and (as of 2023) is unavailable as an ebook, and used copies can get pricey.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** When Christopher Golden pitched ''Sins of the Father'', he wanted to have Pike return as a KnightErrant VampireHunter, but Joss Whedon disapproved of this and made him change it to reflect his own head canon that Pike and Buffy broke up due to Pike getting tired of constant vampire hunting.
** A novel where Oz met a female werewolf was canceled because Whedon wanted to save that idea for the main show.
