Go To

* AbilityOverAppearance: The producers originally envisaged a younger actor to play Buck Rogers, somebody of around 25 years old. However Gil Gerard, who was 35 at the time, gave a very impressive audition to the production team so this was decided to base the character around the actor and not the actor around the character. He was subsequently rewritten to make Buck Rogers slightly older than the original comics and movie serials viewed him.
* ActorSharedBackground: Gil Gerard was a chemical engineer prior to working as an actor. This was also the profession of the original literary Anthony Rogers, as stated in the seminal Buck Rogers novella ''Armageddon 2419''.
* CastTheRunnerUp: Juanin Clay was considered Wilma Deering. She guest starred as Major Marla Landers in "Vegas in Space".
* CreatorBacklash: Gil Gerard has said that he disliked the production team's tendency to make Buck so glib and jokey, and he pushed to have a more professional and serious portrayal.
* DuelingWorks: The series premiered in the UK in direct competition with the first episode of the ''Series/DoctorWho'' serial [[Recap/DoctorWhoS18E1TheLeisureHive "The Leisure Hive"]], the Season 18 premiere. Having never previously tried to compete with ''Doctor Who'' using another sci-fi show, Creator/{{ITV}} ran a giant advertising campaign for ''Buck Rogers'', and the combination of this and its higher production values resulted in it trouncing ''Doctor Who'' in the ratings, with the latter seeing its lowest viewing figures since its ''first'' season.
* DyeingForYourArt: Creator/ErinGray was asked to dye her hair blonde for the role of Wilma Deering. However, as the first season progresses, her blonde hair begins to fade to her natural brunette coloring. In the second season, she was allowed to have completely brunette hair.
* HeAlsoDid: Erin Gray would later go on to have greater 80's success playing Kate Summers Stratton on ''Series/SilverSpoons''.
* TheOtherDarrin:
** Bob Elyea as Twiki's voice for most of the second season when Creator/MelBlanc was ill. Also, Kane was played by Henry Silva in the pilot movie and by Michael Ansara in the series proper. In both cases, the cast changes came with a personality change. Twiki became more grumpy and cantankerous. Kane became honorable and dutybound.
** Additionally, Patty Maloney (Tina in "Cruise Ship to the Stars") replaced Felix Silla inside the Twiki suit for a couple Season 1 episodes.
* PromotedFanboy: Tim O'Connor as Dr. Huer. O'Connor was a huge fan of the original Buck Rogers serial starring Buster Crabbe, and enthusiastically jumped at the opportunity of being cast in the show.
* PropRecycling:
** The Earth starfighters were a draft design for the Colonial Vipers from ''Series/{{Battlestar Galactica|1978}}''.
** Buck's shuttle Ranger 3 and the closeup of the Earth starfighter's joystick is identical to the 3-button joysticks in ''Galactica'' (later episodes use a different joystick prop).
* TheRedStapler: Erin Gray was rather flattered to learn that her role as the fearless Col. Wilma Deering was an inspiration for some female fans to join the military.
* ReferencedBy:
** Bird Person from ''WesternAnimation/RickAndMorty'' is a parody of Hawk.
** ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark'': The episode [[Recap/SouthParkS10E13GoGodGoXII Go God Go XII]] parodies the TV series' intro in its PreviouslyOn segment.
* SpoiledByTheCastList: The fact that the opening credits for the ClipShow episode "A Blast for Buck" list solely [[spoiler:Gary Coleman]] as the guest star (the episode features pretty much every past guest star, but via archive footage; [[spoiler:Coleman]] is the only one who appears in the new material) makes painfully obvious who's behind the riddle.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Creator/GlenALarson originally wanted Creator/KurtRussell to play Buck Rogers, but he wasn't interested in television and was focusing on a film career.
