* ActorAllusion:
** In "Big Time Breakout", Griffin suggests that Carlos could go on to do Broadway. The real Carlos primarily did musical theater before the series started.
** "Big Time Scandal" has James tell Katie that he accidentally blew up Music/CherLloyd's car with fireworks at a party. In reality, it was all four of the boys at the party and instead of Cher's car, they (almost) accidentally blew up Music/TaylorSwift.[[note]]It was a misfire and Taylor had gotten too close. Nobody was hurt, though.[[/note]]
* ActorSharedBackground: Lucy's parents are shown to be Asian and White, just like her actress Malese Jow.
* CastingGag: Erin Sanders once again plays a character dating a guy named Logan.
* ContractualPurity: Expected since they're on {{Creator/Nickelodeon}}.
* TheDanza:
** Kendall is played by Creator/KendallSchmidt, Logan by Creator/LoganHenderson, Carlos by Carlos Pena, and James by James Maslow. [[spoiler: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]] with Logan, as ''Big Time Moms'' reveals his first name is actually ''Hortense'']].
** Lucy's middle name is Elizabeth, which is Malese Jow's first name.
* DawsonCasting:
** The guys are about 3-4 years older than the standard sophomore/junior high school age, as is Creator/ErinSanders who plays Camille.
** Surprisingly, Creator/CiaraBravo who plays Katie was between the ages of 12-16 playing a character three years younger than herself. It's not an egregious example as Ciara looked the age of her character.
* DuelingShows:
** Disney XD's ''Series/ImInTheBand''.
** As of Season 2, ''Series/ShakeItUp''.
* IronyAsSheIsCast:
** In the pilot episode ''Big Time Audition,'' the boys are depicted as having no aptitude whatsoever for singing or dancing, until they finally agree to buckle down and get serious about learning from Gustavo. Of course, in real life, the four actors all needed to be skilled singers and dancers already, or else they wouldn't have been cast in the roles in the first place. From the end of the pilot episode and continuing through the rest of the series, the actors' real talents were allowed to shine.
** Played with in ''Big Time Rides''. The fictional James has to learn to ride a bike, while the real-life James already knows how to.
* TheOtherDarrin: Spencer Locke was replaced by Kelli Goss as Jennifer 2 (the blonde one) when the former was filming ''Film/ResidentEvilAfterlife''. While Locke would return for the Jennifer role and Goss gets another background character role, the positions were reversed for the second half of Season 2.
* PlayingAgainstType: Creator/ElizabethGillies appears in "Big Time Secret" and her character is actually really nice, which is unexpected considering her [[Theatre/{{Thirteen}} other]] [[Series/{{Victorious}} roles.]]
* PlayingWithCharacterType: Creator/TaraStrong, Creator/JamesArnoldTaylor, Creator/DeeBradleyBaker, Creator/CarlosAlazraqui, Creator/RobPaulsen, and Creator/PhilLaMarr appear as live-action characters in contrast to their usual voice acting roles. With that said though, the characters they play are in line with their usual character types, like Tara as the boys' teacher (a reasonable authority figure). Although Rob did do a couple of voice-only roles on the show as well, such as the coffee machine in "Big Time Jobs".
* ProductionPosse: Half the people who have been on ''Series/NedsDeclassifiedSchoolSurvivalGuide'' are on this show, including Missy as Griffin's daughter Mercedes; Carlos, who played the Spelling Bee champ; Vice Principal Crubbs as a Secret Agent; and Mr. Dren, the nerdy math teacher, as Lucy's Dad. Mr. Kwest is now a therapist (as he was on ''Series/FreaksAndGeeks''), and who thought that Ms. Enstile, the Spanish teacher, would become Selana's manager? Bitsy, the AlphaBitch on ''Ned's Declassified'' season 1, was one of the Jennifers before she got replaced. Bernice, the new girl at Polk, became Stephanie, the new girl at Palmwoods. Fabio also appeared in both shows at one point. This show also had [[WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants Patchy the Pirate]] do a cameo after ''Ned's'' had a guy wear a [=SpongeBob=] costume to picture day. And, last but not least, [[Creator/DaranNorris Gordy is Buddha Bob]].
* RealitySubtext: "Big Time Invasion" is about One Direction and The Wanted becoming hugely popular in America, sending BTR sales plummeting. While BTR may not be as massive in real life as they are in the series, One Direction did indeed play a part in their decline. (The episode basically describes their deposal of Justin Bieber in the real world). Averted with The Wanted; they are in the episode portrayed as being as popular as One Direction when in real life they are anything but. They aren't even as popular as the real life BTR (in the U.S.), let alone the fictional band.
* RealLifeRelative: Alexa Vega and Carlos Pena married after the series and as a result, combined their last names as [=PenaVega=].
* RoleReprise: "Big Time Beach Party" has Creator/TomKenny reprise his role as [[WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants Patchy The Pirate]] .
* ScrewedByTheNetwork: [[http://www.nickandmore.com/2011/12/02/nickelodeons-ratings-drop-whats-going-on/ Nickelodeon's]] ratings during the end of 2011 were declining, pulling this show's ratings down because of their inconsistent scheduling. Fans were expecting the third season to be the final; leading to a pleasant surprise when it was renewed for a fourth season.
** Then there’s the perception that Nickelodeon neglected the show (as well as the band) to focus on Music/OneDirection, angering both BTR fans [[EpicFail and]] One Direction fans. Although the Nick-1D relationship never really went anywhere (unless you count an iCarly guest appearance) BTR was still on the losing side because the British boy band would go on to obliterate not only BTR but every boy band on the planet.
*** Ironically enough, one of the later episodes, ''Big Time Invasion'' revolved around the competition of British and American boy bands. Coincidence? See RealitySubtext above.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Kendall wasn't originally a character in the show, instead another character Curt, played by Curt Hansen (who would later go on to play a [[NoCelebritiesWereHarmed parody]] of Creator/ZacEfron on the show, Dak Zevon), was the lead singer and protagonist of the show. Hansen only appeared as "Curt" in the unaired pilot. Then he was later replaced by Kendall Schmidt, because he (Hansen) sounded too much like James, looked a bit too old, and didn't "click" as well with the other three, so the pilot was reshot.
** There was supposed to be a crossover with ''Series/{{Victorious}}''.
