Context Trivia / Ben10Omniverse

Go To

* ActingForTwo: Creator/JuddNelson voices both Ben 10,000 and Eon. [[SignificantDoubleCasting It's also rather appropriate]], because Eon is an [[AlternateSelf alternate timeline]] and [[EvilCounterpart evil version of Ben]].
* AdoredByTheNetwork: An odd example, since ''Boomerang'', Cartoon Network's ''vault'' channel, has slotted it in an early-evening daily slot, with extra slots on weekends. They've even aired new episodes before Cartoon Network did. CN proper was less interested and eventually [[ScrewedByTheNetwork screwed it over.]]
* AscendedFanon: It was a common idea amongst fans that Dr. Animo's middle name was "James". Come "It Was Them", Rook refers to him as "Aloysius James Animo".
* CreatorBacklash:
** Derrick J. Wyatt came to dislike his experience working on the show due to both [[ScrewedByTheNetwork how the network screwed the show over]] and the [[BrokenBase widely divided reception among fans that]] [[{{Sequelitis}} eclipsed of previous installments.]]
** Geoffrey Thorne was unhappy that Charmcaster was made an outright villain, rather than the more conflicted character she had become in ''Ultimate Alien''.
* CreatorsPest:
** Derrick J. Wyatt has stated that he finds Fasttrack to be the lamest of Ben's aliens due to being [[SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute too similar to XLR8]] and [[RubberForeheadAliens looking too human]]. Fasttrack is one of the few aliens featured in ''Ultimate Alien'' to not make an appearance in ''Omniverse'', not even as a cameo in "A New Dawn", which featured a cameo from nearly every other alien.
** Derrick J. Wyatt also found [[WesternAnimation/Ben10UltimateAlien Ultimate Ben]] to be a lame idea, which is likely why he wanted the future in this installment to be the same as the future from the [[WesternAnimation/Ben10 Orignal Series]].
* DevelopmentGag: Swampfire's new form bears resemblance to some of his original concept art.
* ExecutiveMeddling:
** Derrick Wyatt says that the tone being closer to that of [[{{WesternAnimation/Ben10}} the Original Series]] was an executive mandate due to the fact that, globally, the Original Series apparently does the best ratings-wise.
** Gwen and Kevin's "college" redesign was the only redesign they were going to get, but executives wanted them to look more similar to their ''Alien Force'' / ''Ultimate Alien'' designs for their first appearance, so they received "transition" designs for the first episode.
** Derrick designed Vilgax with the respirator he had back in the Original Series, but executives discarded it because they wanted the character to emote more clearly. Derrick hoped to eventually use the respirator on the design, but it never came to pass.
** Eventually, the executives said there were too many alien transformations, so [[spoiler:Whampire]] is the last new alien the show was going to introduce. This included aliens from previous series, impossibiliting Spitter, Fasttrack, Jetray and Chamalien from appearing again.
** They were also at some point "mandated to have less transformations per episode going forward."
** [[http://ask.fm/DerrickJWyatt/answer/121229959796 The reason for Skurd's existence]].
* FakeNationality: Kenny Tennyson is once again voice by a white actor despite being biracial.
* FanNickname: in the LATAM fandom the Omnitrix Azmuth gave Ben at the end of Ultimate Alien and used in Omniverse is know as "Omnitrix Definitivo" (Ultimate Omnitrix)
* FlipFlopOfGod: Due to Derrick Wyatt's discord with some of Creator/DwayneMcDuffie's additions in ''Alien Force'', some of his statements turn out like this.
** Learning new alien's abilities. Creator/DwayneMcDuffie stated that the Omnitrix has a feature that let the bearer instantly learn the abilities of an alien they turned into (though they diverged from this rule when introducing Juryrigg). Derrick Wyatt makes it clear that that feature is not present.
** Goop's acid abilities. Creator/DwayneMcDuffie said that they were how the species digested food. Derrick Wyatt said that they were the result of an Omnitrix/Ultimatrix glitch, and are possessed by neither regular members of the species nor the Goop produced by the new Omnitrix.
** Psyphon's origin. Creator/DwayneMcDuffie described him as being from one of planet Vilgax conquered, but Derrick Wyatt made a ShrugOfGod that he was possibly a cyborg or an android made by Vilgax.
** Ben 23 was originally stated not to have have Rath, Jetray, Mole-Stache, or any aliens that Ben obtained by scanning. "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad Ben World" shows him to have Armodrillo, Rath, and Nanomech.
** Before she even made it into the series, Derrick Wyatt said Charmcaster would not make a HeelFaceTurn and remain a villain, despite [=McDuffie's=] evident development path for her. After a lot of fan backlash and [[PoorlyDisguisedPilot plans for a Gwen spin-off solidifying]], other writers and the ending of Charmcaster's final speaking appearance changed this answer to "[[HazyFeelTurn still possible]]". In fact, the line Gwen has in "Third Time's a Charm" about her and Charmcaster being friends under different circumstances appears to have been put in by the episode's writer as part SequelHook and part stealth TakeThat against Cartoon Network for not green-lighting the Gwen and Charmcaster-based spin-off Dwayne [=McDuffie=] had proposed following ''Ultimate Alien''.
* FranchiseKiller: While the show technically had better ratings than ''Alien Force'' and ''Ultimate Alien'', its toy sales were low and the fanbase had very divided feelings on its quality. Eventually, it ended up ScrewedByTheNetwork. Tellingly, the next entry of the franchise ultimately became the 2016 ContinuityReboot ''WesternAnimation/Ben102016'' than a sequel series, ending the original ''Ben 10'' continuity.
* InvisibleAdvertising: This is what happened to the final season. Cartoon Network had no interest in continuing the series, but they still had the eighth season in the can and would've been charged extra taxes if it hadn't aired by the end of 2014. The solution was to shove it of to a 10-episode two-week strip run at the beginning of November 2014 at 6 a.m., where rights to shows Cartoon Network has to air to get other properties usually are carried.
* LyingCreator:
** Derrick J. Wyatt got mistaken for this due to "Store 23" featuring present Feedback, despite him stating several times he wasn't in the new Omnitrix. It was actually a diffusion error: that episode was suppose to take place after "Showdown Part 1" and "Part 2" where Ben would reacquire Feedback.
** He also states that Zombozo was no longer a [[ComicBook/TheJoker Joker]] {{Expy}}. When Zombozo shows up in "Special Delivery", he still uses the same Joker-esque gadgets he had back in ''Ultimate Alien'' rather than the more supernatural powers he had back in the Original Series. To be fair, his ''personality'' is less like the Joker now, although it's also not the same personality he had back in the Original Series.
** Way Big's ability to shoot cosmic rays was stated to be caused by an Ultimatrix glitch that wasn't present in the current Omnitrix. [[spoiler:Yet he still uses it against Malware in the finale of the second arc and has a BeamOWar with a Waybad in the finale of the third arc.]]
** Derrick said Creator/SteveBlum wasn't reprising any previous roles. In "Vilgax Must Croak", he once again plays Vilgax. In "Mystery, Incorporeal", he's also back as Ghostfreak and, as shown in the "Galatic Monsters" arc, he's back as Ghostfreak's source, Zs'Skayr.
** Albedo was stated by Derrick to no longer possess the innate, at-will transformation ability gained in Ultimate Alien and instead relies on an Omnitrix again. In the show however, Albedo explains that he ''does'' still have it and that his Omnitrix-looking device is merely a stabilizer to help him maintain his transformations for however long he wants.
** "Ben 10,00 Returns" is stated to no longer be in continuity. However, while that version of Ben 10,000 is no longer Ben's future (but an alternate one instead. However, the series finale of ''Ultimate Alien'' had already contradicted many of the elements of that version of Ben 10,000), everything else about the episode is adhered to (TheMultiverse and Eon's true nature as an alternate Ben, introduced in that episode, come back in ''big'' ways in ''Omniverse'').
** While Chromastone's flight ability and Primus's existence are said to have been retconned, Chromastone's only two appearances were indoors and nothing happened with the Omnitrix that would be impossible in light of Primus's existence, though a lot of fans wondered if Eunice would ever be seen again (she eventually was, in a non-speaking cameo role in "The Most Dangerous Game Show".)
** It was repeatedly stated that the future presented in this iteration was the same as the future presented back in the the Original Series. This is stated despite the fact these two futures contradict each others on plenty of points, Kevin being a good guy rather than a psychopath who spent his youth in the Null Void, or Max looking different. The Wiki notably disregards Wyatt's statements on this and present the Omniverse Ben 10,000 as just one possible future.
* MagnumOpusDissonance: Matt Wayne has said "So Long, and Thanks for All the Smoothies" and "Blukic and Driba Go To Mr. Smoothy's" are his two favorite episodes. The first is widely regarded as the most divisive episode of Omniverse, if not the franchise, while the latter revolves around two of [[TheScrappy the most widely despised]] characters of the series.
* MarthDebutedInSmashBros: Eye Guy first reappeared in the ''Omniverse'' video game. Only then after was his TV debut.
* TheOriginalDarrin:
** After a few years since the first series, Creator/SteveBlum finally reprises his role as Vilgax, as well as playing Ghostfreak and Zs'Skayr again after being replaced by Creator/JamesRemar in the former role and Creator/JeffBennett in the other two.
** After being replaced by Creator/KariWahlgren in ''Ultimate Alien'', Creator/JenniferHale reprises her role as Rojo.
* TheOtherDarrin:
** Many aliens who were played by Creator/DeeBradleyBaker (even those who themselves were replaced by Dee) have been replaced by a different VA (such as Cannonbolt being played by Creator/DavidKaye), though Dee still plays a few (Spidermonkey, Water Hazard, Lodestar).
** Creator/AshleyJohnson replaced Meagan Smith as young Gwen. Despite Creator/TaraStrong returning, Johnson also replaced her as adult Gwen.
** Azmuth is now voiced by Creator/ReneAuberjonois, having been voiced by Creator/JeffBennett during ''Alien Force'' and ''Ultimate Alien'' and by Robert David Hall in the original series and ''Destroy All Aliens''. Makes sense, since Jeff's voice for him sounds like an [[Series/StarTrekDeepSpaceNine Odo]] impression anyways, so it fits quite well.
** Creator/DavidKaye replaced Creator/PowersBoothe as Sunder. He also replaced Jeff Doucette as Thumbskull and Creator/TimCurry as Joseph Chadwick in ''An American Benwolf In London'', due to the latter having a stroke. He also replaced Creator/SteveBlum and Creator/DeeBradleyBaker as Heatblast and Creator/FredTatasciore and Baker as Cannonbolt.
** Grandpa Max was recast in the French dub after the first few episodes because the original actor passed away.
** Creator/JuddNelson replaced Creator/YuriLowenthal as Eon and Creator/FredTatasciore and Sean Donnellan as Ben 10,000.
** Creator/BumperRobinson, Creator/VanessaMarshall, Creator/OgieBanks, and Creator/CoreyBurton replaced Creator/PhilMorris, Creator/NicoleSullivan, Creator/SamLerner, and Creator/DiedrichBader in the respective role [[WesternAnimation/TheSecretSaturdays Doc, Drew, and Zak Saturday and Fiskerton]]. [[spoiler:Ironically, the only ''TSS'' character not to be recast is [[BigBad V.V.]] [[BackFromTheDead Argost]], whom is reprised by Burton.]]
** Phil Billings is played by Creator/RobPaulsen instead of Creator/RobertPatrick, as he was back in the original series.
** Addwaitya is voiced by Creator/SteveBlum instead of Creator/JohnDiMaggio.
** Creator/EdieMcClurg replaced Miriam Flynn as Aunt Vera for her one appearance.
** In addition to replacing Creator/CharlieSchlatter as young Kevin, Creator/GregCipes also replaces him as adult Kevin.
** Creator/ScottMenville replaced Creator/TaraStrong as Ken Tennyson.
** Creator/CoreyBurton replaced Creator/DeeBradleyBaker as Brainstorm and Richard Doyle as Ignacius Baumann.
* OutOfOrder: Several episodes have been aired out of order, the most notable being "Store 23", which is chronologically set after "Showdown" yet aired before it. This resulted in [[spoiler: Ben regaining Feedback]] being spoiled to the auidence.
* PermanentPlaceholder: Derrick J. Wyatt thought of Blitzwolfer's name as a temporary placeholder until someone had a better suggestion. However, nobody was able to come up with a better name, so they stuck with that one.
* PlayingAgainstType:
** Bumper Robinson as Rook.
** Creator/YuriLowenthal, normally known for voicing heroic teenagers, plays several aliens that are a bit different from what he's known for. The best example is Kickin Hawk, a much larger and more muscle-bound character than, say, [[Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann Simon]].
** Creator/CoreyBurton, well-known for playing antagonists and wise men, plays store clerk and ButtMonkey Mr. Baumman in this show.
** Along with Vilgax, a role that Creator/SteveBlum reprises, he ''also'' plays Hobble, who essentially amounts to the ButtMonkey of "Vilgax Must Croak".
** Creator/TaraPlatt as Ester, who isn't an older, serious-minded woman.
* PoorlyDisguisedPilot: WordOfGod is that the episodes set in Friedkin University were this for a potential Gwen spinoff developed for CN Asia, with Gwen as Lucky Girl in the lead; Kevin, Hex, Charmcaster, Bezel and Professor Xagliv as the regular supporting cast, and Addwaitya as the BigBad. ([[TheOtherDarrin Suddenly, Steve Blum now voicing him makes more sense]].)
* PopCultureUrbanLegends: Some fans believe that the reason why [[PutOnABus Jetray never appeared]] was because Derrick J. Wyatt disliked him and wanted to replace him with Astrodactyl. However, Derrick denied these rumors, saying that the show didn't intend to replace any aliens and he admitted he never disliked Jetray.
* PromotedFanboy:
** While Derrick got to do some design work on the previous sequels ([=SevenSeven=], the Vreedles), he makes it clear that he's glad to work as the main art designer on his Formspring.
** Matt Youngberg as well, who was an episode director in ''Ultimate Alien'' and now is showrunner.
* RealLifeRelative: Ben and Ester's respective voice actors, Creator/YuriLowenthal and Creator/TaraPlatt, are married in real life. Fittingly, both Ben and Ester have a mutual attraction with each other and have even gone on dates. [[spoiler: Sadly, they do not end up together by the end of the show]].
* RecycledScript: And ''how''. Sometimes, it really makes you feel like they took the idea to make the iteration more like the Original Series a bit too literally:
** "Hot Stretch" involves aliens with high body temperature attempting to use a machine to raise Earth's temperature so it would be livable to them. Season 3 of ''Alien Force'' had an episode with Vulkanus attempting to do exactly the same thing with the same purpose.
** While not identical, "Of Predators and Prey" has a lot of similarities with Vilgax's first direct encounter with Ben, down to Ben getting captured and the ship exploding at the end.
** "Outbreak" involves Dr. Psychobos stealing a piece of the Omnitrix, resulting in it transforming the others instead of Ben. This seems like a mix of "Dr. Animo and the Mutant Ray" (where Animo had stolen the Omnitrix's faceplate) and the ''Ultimate Alien'' episode "Inspector 13" (where the Omnitrix ends up turning Kevin and Gwen into aliens instead of Ben after being hacked by the titular villain).
** "Many Happy Returns" isn't a recycled script in itself, but the opening scene with Ben saving a girl from fire is basically lifted from a similar scene in episode 2 of the Original Series... only with Rath instead of Heatblast. Possibly a MythologyGag.
** "Special Delivery" has Psyphon trying to get his hand on a Dwarf Star, a device that is practically identical in its effect to Forever King Driscoll's Sub-Energy in the original series (except it works better). Plus, Ben defeats him by [[MookHorrorShow scaring him with Toepick]], practically the same way he defeated Zombozo with Ghostfreak in their first fight. Oh, and Ben wrecked Mr. Baumann's car just like Kevin's. Seriously, it's like they tried to use as much old ideas as possible to make a new episode.
** "T.G.I.S." has Dr. Animo resurrect [[spoiler:BigBad Argost from ''WesternAnimation/TheSecretSaturdays'']] much the same way Future Animo resurrected Vilgax in "Ben 10,000".
** An episode has Ma Vreedle threaten to destroy Earth if he son isn't brought back to her... which was ''exactly'' the premise of the episode that introduced Attea, Emperor Milleous and Alien X.
** "Something Zombozo This Way Comes" is almost entirely based on Original Series episode "Last Laugh", down to copying the ending where Ben scared Zombozo into leaving (only with [[spoiler:Toepick]] instead of Ghostfreak).
** Two-parter "And Then There Were None"/"And Then There Was Ben" reuses idea of Eon collecting Bens from other dimensions from "Ben 10,000 Returns", although with much greater focus.
* RoleReprise:
** As noted above, Creator/CharlieAdler reprises his roles as the title characters of ''WesternAnimation/CowAndChicken''.
** While the titular family of ''WesternAnimation/TheSecretSaturdays'' were recast in "T.G.I.S.", Creator/CoreyBurton ironically reprised his role as [[spoiler: [[BackFromTheDead V.V.]] [[BigBad Argost]]]].
* RunningTheAsylum: Aspects of this show up from time to time, mostly in characterization and design aspects. Derrick Wyatt claims he and Matt Youngberg had long talked about they way they would do ''Ben 10'' even before ''Omniverse'', which just adds to this feel.
* ScrewedByTheNetwork: The show really got screwed in its final three seasons during the year of 2014 through getting bumped to a weekday 6AM EST timeslot aired daily, which began on October 6, 2014 (i.e the early morning shift where it trails right after ''Creator/AdultSwim'' meaning barely anyone will be awake to catch the episodes). This saw them burn off the last three remaining seasons by November.
* SeriesHiatus: The show had a five month break between the third and four seasons and a equally long break between the fifth and six.
* ShortRunInPeru: Most of "The Evil Rooters" arc aired in Latin America before it even had a definite airdate in the states.
* ShrugOfGod: In regards to whether or not Gwen and Kevin stay together and are married in the future. Even the show itself portrays it very ambiguously, as they both come to Grandpa Max's retirement ceremony together but say and do nothing that would indicate being still involved.
* StarDerailingRole:
** Thanks to the mishandling of her character, Creator/VyvanPham (the voice of Julie) largely fell into obscurity after the show's run.
** Similarly, Bettina Bush, the voice of Kai Green, retired from voice acting due to the poor handling of her character. She's currently a spokesperson and magazine editor.
* ThrowItIn:
** Derrick says Psychobos' {{Character Catchphrase}} ("And I use the term ''loosely''...") was originally just said once. It was when Creator/EricBauza, his actor, started putting it in inappropriate areas that they decided to make it his catchphrase.
** Bullfrag originally had CoolShades so he could infiltrate the Incursian army without his green eyes being a giveaway that he is actually Ben, but the people working on the show liked them enough to make them part of his normal outfit.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: [[WhatCouldHaveBeen/Ben10 Enough for its own page]].
* WordOfGod:
** The reason why Bullfrag looks different from other Incurseans is because he's a genetically optimal (completely healthy and fit) specimen, and most Incurseans have poor diets.
** Derrick J. Wyatt has answered many fan questions on his [[https://ask.fm/DerrickJWyatt ask.fm account]].
* WorkingTitle:
** The episode "Rook Tales" was originally going to be called "Separation Anxiety".
* WriteWhoYouKnow: Bezel's opinions on magic, at least according to the Ben 10 Wiki, echo Matt Youngberg's, indicating that Bezel was written with some of Matt's personality in mind.
* WriterRevolt: According to Matt Wayne, most of the writing staff who had worked on Alien Force/Ultimate Alien hated the ShipSinking of Ben/Julie, to the point they swore off watching the show and buying the merch. It’s also probably why the PromotedFanboy ‘s FanPreferredCouple of Ben/Kai was written with near zero chemistry, with the latter made out as an unpleasant {{Jerkass}}.
* WrittenByCastMember: Creator/YuriLowenthal was the one who wrote "The Most Dangerous Game Show".

!!Other
* Several aliens have sound effects that accompany their speech or movements: Spidermonkey has monkey-like chatter; Crashhopper's speech and jumps include cricket noises; and Shocksquatch has a crackling undertone to his voice like electricity. Liam's speech is littered with chicken noises, but Kickin' Hawk (who was based on Liam) has hawk screams instead.
* We discover in one episode that Rook's given name is Blonko; his people put their surname first, like another alien species, [[Series/StarTrekDeepSpaceNine the Bajorans]]. (Like most Asian-ethnic people in RealLife, as well).
* Upchuck's species, Gourmands, come in two different variants, Murk and Perk. These correspond to the two different designs that Upchuck has had in the original series and the sequels. The original series' Upchuck was a Perk which is a reference to Tom Perkins who designed Upchuck in the original series, while the sequels' design for Upchuck is a Murk which is a reference to Glen Murakami who was an executive producer for the sequels. Wyatt liked both versions so he came up with the idea that there were two races of Gourmand and both were in the Omnitrix. In practice, though, aside from switching back and forth as he went among both races in the episode taking place on their planet, we've pretty much only seen the original series version.
