!!Trivia for the franchise in general:

* CashCowFranchise: Candy, dolls, masks, the aforementioned board game, video games, ''[[http://www.i-mockery.com/weeklies/weekly.php?type=music&id=57 a dance album]]'', a phone line where Freddy tells you scary stories...you name it. Enough so that New Line Cinema is sometimes called "The House That Freddy Built"; it was their first big success, and basically put the studio on the map.
* CastTheRunnerUp:
** Mark Patton, who would later be cast as Jesse Walsh in the second film, auditioned for the role of Glen Lantz and claimed that the auditioners had been narrowed down to him and Creator/JohnnyDepp before Depp got the role.
** Lisa Wilcox and Lezlie Deane auditioned for roles in ''The Dream Warriors''. They would later be cast as Alice Johnson and Tracy Swan in the following sequels.
* ChannelHop:
** Believe it or not, ''Creator/{{Disney}}'', of all studios, [[http://cinefantastiqueonline.com/2008/10/15/wes-craven-on-dreaming-up-nightmares/ was the first studio]] Creator/WesCraven pitched the franchise to. He sought out other studios after Disney urged him to tone down its violent content.
** As of October 2019, the IP rights to the franchise have reverted to Wes Craven's estate, with it being possible that any future works will be produced outside of New Line Cinema and Warner Bros.
** The television rights were itinerant in the early days of the franchise, with the first two films going to The Samuel Goldwyn Company, ''Dream Warriors'' going to Columbia Pictures Television, and ''The Dream Master'' going to Worldvision Enterprises before finally settling at franchise home New Line beginning with ''The Dream Child''.
* TheOtherDarrin:
** Creator/JackieEarleHaley took over the role of Freddy Krueger from Robert Englund in the remake.
** Kristen was portrayed by Creator/PatriciaArquette in ''Dream Warriors'', and Creator/TuesdayKnight in ''The Dream Master''.
* TheOtherMarty: Creator/DavidWarner was originally cast as Freddy, but left the production due to a scheduling conflict.
* ReferencedBy: Has its [[ReferencedBy/ANightmareOnElmStreet own page]].
* {{Typecasting}}: Creator/RobertEnglund played Freddy in all of the original films and ''Freddy vs. Jason''. Apart from all the makeup it requires, he does enjoy the role. The whole "typecasting" thing was lovingly mocked on ''Series/MadTV1995'' early in that show's run, when Englund did a guest spot for a HalloweenEpisode. During his appearance, everyone kept describing Englund, as his big claim to fame, his other famous genre role of "Willie", the comic relief alien from the original ''Series/{{V|1983}}'' mini-series. Englund responds quite angrily, pointing out to each cast member who calls him "Willie", that he played Freddy Krueger in the ''Nightmare on Elm Street'' films. But everyone keeps referring to him as "The guy who played Willie on ''V''" instead of "the ''Nightmare On Elm Street'' guy", much to his dismay and anger.
* VaporWare:
** The reality television show ''Real Nightmares'', which had six episodes made but never aired.
** The ''Freddy Vs. Jason'' video game.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: The NES game was originally going to have the player be Freddy, as he takes on the kids himself. This was probably changed due to fear of possible controversy.
* WriteWhoYouHate: According to the film's DVD audio commentary, one of Creator/WesCraven's inspirations for Freddy Krueger was a school bully.
* Wes Craven chose to give Freddy his trademark [[WolverineClaws clawed glove]] after seeing his cat clawing his couch, and realized that fear of claws is a PrimalFear that has been with humans since prehistoric times, when we were still regularly preyed on by big cats.
