Context Theatre / Sonny

Go To

A theatrical adaptation of Norwegian alternative rock band Music/KaizersOrchestra's first three albums: ''Ompa til du dør'' (2001), ''Evig pint'' (2003), and ''Maestro'' (2005). It is, by admission of the scriptwriter, famed author Tore Renberg, only his own interpretation of the lyrics and characters found in the song lyrics, and should not be considered {{canon}}. It was only planned for a limited run, and no recordings for posterity have been made.

* AdaptationDistillation: Any ties between the three albums are only obliquely referred to in its original form; here, things are changed around to combine a complete narrative.
* AsTheGoodBookSays: You can always trust [[SinisterMinister Fader Martin]] to come up with some bit of scripture relevant to the current situation, even if it's [[FromACertainPointOfView twisted around to accommodate the characters' immoral acts]].
%%* BaitAndSwitchGunshot: Sonny's death at the hands of Vicente's son.
%%* BedlamHouse: Dieter Meyers Inst.
%%* BigBadFriend: Sonny, to Vicente.
%%* CallBack / MythologyGag: All over the place, mostly in dialogue form.
* ColdBloodedTorture: Monsieur Clavier has Vicente tortured for what is implied to be months, if not years, in order to extract information from him. His torturer takes extreme sadistic pleasure in this and is disturbingly innovate with his torture.
* CreepyChild: Vicente's son. Although who can blame him, having been raised by Sonny.
%%* DecoyProtagonist: Despite "Sonny" being the titular character, Vicente is the true protagonist.
%%* FlowerMotifs: Monsieur Clavier is keen on flower metaphors.
* IHaveManyNames: Sonny, also known as "Dieter Meyer", "Papa", "Maestro"...
%%* IronWoobie: VICENTE.
%%* JukeboxMusical: It's a bit more complicated than that, but this is a basic definition of what it is.
%%* LaResistance: "Resistansen".
%%* LaughablyEvil: Dr. Mowinckel.
%%* LoveTriangle: An infinitely tragic one with Sonny, Vicente, and Victoria.
%%* MadDoctor: Dr. Mowinckel, towards the end.
* RearrangeTheSong: All the songs have been re-recorded, and some sound ''vastly'' different from their original incarnations.
%%* RussianRoulette: 'Tis what Resistansen does.
* ScareChord: Those very loud gunshots that more often than not, appear out of nowhere.
* ShellShockedVeteran: Vicente, again. After escaping from his confinement, he is unable to come to grips with the war being over.
* ShoutOut: Clavier's torturer speaks English with a thick German accent; this being a reference to the song "Die Polizei", it is also by extent a reference to the German nihilists of ''Film/TheBigLebowski''.
