* Hummel's death, esspecially when you realise that despite his impressive military career and the countless sacrifices he made for his country, his actions on Alcatraz ensure that history will remember him as a traitor who endangered the lives of countless innocent people and whose minions killed an entire Navy [=SEAL=] team. He failed to secure the reparations for his fallen men and also destroyed his own reputation.
** Granted, given the President laments how they ignored and abandoned Hummel when he tried to get the reparations the legal way, it's possible he'll be TheAtoner and see to it the families of Hummel's fallen men are compensated.
* His men's LastStand which can be heard over the opening credits:
-->'''Hummel''': "I won't let you down. I won't let you down, son.''
-->'''Marine''': [[ArmorPiercingQuestion "They're not coming back for us, are they sir?"]]
* Hummel's speech on his wife's grave:
-->'''Hummel''': I miss you so much. There's something I've gotta do, Barb. Something I couldn't do while you were here. I tried. You know I tried everything, and I still don't have their attention. Let's hope this elevates their thinking. But whatever happens...(he takes Congressional Medal of Honor out of his pocket) please don't think less of me. (he sets the Medal on top of the headstone, leans over and kisses it, and then walks away).
* The [=SEALs=] shooting it out with the Marines in the showers, and getting wiped out.
-->'''Goodspeed''': Don't go!
** Another tearjerker in that scene is Hummel frantically ordering his men to cease fire, but they can't hear him over the sound of the gunshots or in Frye and Darrow's case likely ignoring him.
*** The music (a reprise of the part of the main theme that plays over the LastStand mentioned above) doesn't helps any.
** The FBI personnel watching the entire thing on their monitors, absolutely helpless to stop it. Half of them are ready to lose it completely when they see the aftermath.
** One of the Seals left behind to monitor looks like he's about two seconds away from bursting into tears. Or killing himself.
** Hummel finding a survivor among the [=SEALs=] just in time to watch him die. He then curses his opponents for forcing his hand upon fellow soldiers.
* The one soldier among Hummel's men who doesn't get out of the room in time when they steal the VX gas, and is panicking and begging for Major Baxter to let him out as the deadly gas causes his skin to burn and bubble. All Baxter can do is say sorry to his doomed comrade, knowing any attempt at rescue would be suicidal.
* Hummel threatening to murder a hostage if Mason and Goodspeed refuse to surrender. The man is breaking down helplessly with a gun pointed at his head and the two survivors are forced to listen to the whole thing. Thankfully, Hummel doesn't pull the trigger.
* "How does one weigh human life?"
* Sergeant Crisp's death; he was the only soldier other than Baxter and Hummel to express any misgiving about killing an entire city of civilians, and was a longtime comrade to the general. When pressed by Frye and Darrow to arrest Hummel, he has an attack of conscience before reluctantly approaching the general, only to have a pistol pointed to his throat. He is completely helpless when the shooting starts, and his expression is one bordering on regret.
