* In general, Naru and Nephrite's relationship. He lampshades that he's spent most of their interactions lying to her, and using her for selfish purposes. Yet she's attracted, and knows that he's bad news. The arc is pretty heartbreaking. Despite everything Nephrite had done - up to and including using Naru herself for his own purposes - despite Usagi trying to tell her he's a villain, she can't stay away.
* Usagi's friendship with Naru and Umino becomes severely HarsherInHindsight as Usagi slowly stops interacting with them as she meets her fellow Senshi until she pretty much abandons the two of them altogether. It's worse for Naru, as while Umino mostly hung out with Usagi because he had a crush on her and stopped interacting with her once he got together with Naru, Naru begins the series as Usagi's best friend and ends it as a victim of ChuckCunninghamSyndrome.
* Episode 22:
** Naru's HeroicBSOD about how "Masato Sanjoin" shows affection towards her and yet has been cold, accusing her of being Sailor Moon. [[WasItAllALie She doesn't know if he actually likes her or keeps changing his mind]]. It's so bad that she barely notices the tardy bell, and stands at the reception alone. Nephrite then dances with her, [[YankTheDogsChain only to use her to deliver a youma to Princess Dia]].
** Princess Dia's insecurity about her glasses and looking plain.
** Mamoru's CatapultNightmare about the Princess asking him to find the silver crystal.
** Zoicite curling up in Kunzite's lap and crying about Beryl choosing Nephrite for the mission.
* Episode 23:
** Usagi begging Naru to stay away from Masato Sanjoin, knowing that he's a Dark Kingdom General. And Naru refuses, because she's in love.
** Naru was still willing to [[HumanShield take a Moon Tiara for him]]. It was a love doomed from the start, and it's gut-wrenching to watch.
-->'''Naru:''' Please don't hurt Sanjoin-sama!
-->'''Mercury:''' We cannot let him go!
-->'''Mars:''' Get out of our way!
-->'''Naru:''' [[GoThroughMe No, I won't! Not even if you kill me]]!
** Nephrite's EvenEvilHasStandards when he saves Naru from the youma and then runs off after doing some EvilGloating.
* Episode 24 (Nephrite's [[HeelFaceDoorSlam death]] and Naru's reaction to it).
** Surprisingly, this scene is just as good in the [=Dic=] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtbnh4rBzpU dubbed version.]] As one [=MiSTing=] put it, "not even Mary Long's terrible voicing of Molly could ruin that scene." Especially impressive considering she didn't know the episode's plot in advance and had only looked at the script moments before recording it - and her performance reduced the entire crew to tears. SugarWiki/SheReallyCanAct indeed.
---> "I don't think we'll be able to eat a chocolate parfait together."
** The Latin-American VA's made it just as heartwretching. Cristina Camargo's "Nephrite... no... don't leave me, no! Don't die, Nephrite, please don't..." * sob* "NEPHRIIIIIIITEEEE!" still can bring tears to the eyes...
** The Italian voice for Naru is very soft, but for some reason this makes her screams even sadder.
** Molly desperately saying "We'll get a doctor and everything will be alright! Neflite, hang on! I don't want you to go, Neflite! No, don't leave me!" Followed by an utterly heartrending BigNO that will send chills down your spine.
** The Viz dub absolutely KILLED IT with this entire episode. Creator/LiamOBrien does his best work in the whole show (especially his dying words) and Creator/DanielleJudovits' (Credited as Danielle Nicole) Naru makes her pleading utterly gut-wrenching.
** Even Sailor Mars is unable to hold back her tears at this scene.
** It's even worse in retrospect, by the end of the season everyone's memories of the invasion are erased. Just two episodes after this Naru promised she'd never forget Nephrite, [[HarsherInHindsight ouch]]. On the other hand, it means she has memories of a healthier relationship with Umino, that lasts for years.
* Episode 34:
** An injured Mamoru blasts himself for falling for the fake Sailor Moon, not because he nearly lost the crystals, but because the Senshi nearly died. And then Zoicite finds him at his apartment and demands LetsFightLikeGentlemen. He agrees to go, to fight for the crystals, despite bleeding heavily and knowing he probably won't win.
** Usagi after knocking Mamoru good-naturedly on the shoulder [[OhCrap realizes he's bleeding]]. She follows him, only to end up trapped with him, and he tries to bargain for her life when facing Zoicite.
** Mamoru tells Usagi why he wants the Silver Crystal; he's an amnesiac. As a child, his parents were killed in a car crash, and the trauma robbed him of his memories. The orphanage took him in until he was old enough to get a job, and he started having dreams of a princess that asked for the Silver Crystal.
** Mamoru is about to fight Zoicite who summons a giant crystal shard from out of the ground. Zoicite uses it to ''stab Mamoru in the back'' with the strong implication that he ''[[DroppedABridgeOnHim might not survive]]''. Usagi, who was standing by his side the whole time, starts crying as she holds him in her arms. Her tears then glisten, revealing her as the Moon Princess and the episode ends right there. If that isn't enough, the [=DiC=] dub from the 1990s plays the heart-wrenching song "My Only Love" while all this is going on[[note]]Viz Media has the original Japanese song[[/note]]. [[UnexplainedRecovery Mamoru does wake up at the beginning of Episode 36, though]].
** The original Japanese version (and the uncut Viz Media version) actually ''showed'' Mamoru getting impaled. Grab those hankies.
* Episode 35:
** You had Zoicite die in Kunzite's arms, making a last request to die beautifully and then reaffirming his love for Kunzite as he lays dying in his lover's arms. The moment it's clear that Zoicite is going to die, you can almost see tears start to form in Kunzite]]'s eyes. And it's repeated when Kunzite dies fighting the Sailor Senshi, his last words crying out to Zoicite.
** Made even more heartbreaking because the song playing in the background is Solveigs Sang, the lyrics of which translate roughly to:
--> "Maybe both winter and spring will pass / And the next summer, and the entire year / But one day you shall come, I know that / And I shall wait for you, because I promised I would. / God give you strength wherever you go / God give you happiness until you stand before his feet / I will wait here until you come back / And if you wait up there, that's where we'll meet my friend."
** The dub actually makes it ''more'' heartbreaking, as "Malachite" actually pleads for "Zoycite" to be spared, and his voice is filled with emotion as "she" bids him goodbye.
*** The Viz dub has officially made it even sadder with the performances of Creator/LucienDodge and Creator/PatrickSeitz. "And I will love you, Zoisite."
* Episode 36:
** Usagi's HeroicBSOD after losing Tuxedo Kamen and learning she's the Moon Princess; she's barely paying attention to her friends, her classmates, even sports. At night she dreams about Princess Serenity losing Endymion, and Luna can't awaken her. The Senshi are at a loss of what to do, except for Minako.
** How Minako's attempt to cheer up Usagi goes horribly wrong. To get Usagi's mind off recent events, she brushes out Usagi's hair and suggests they go to the new salon for an ImportantHaircut. The salon, of course, is a Kunzite trap, and by sheer luck the youma catches Minako instead while the salon owner is washing Usagi's hair. As Minako's being strangled and sedated, her expression becomes heartbreaking as she realizes how she endangered the princess. Though it gets alleviated in that at the end of the episode Usagi is relieved that Mamoru is alive, if brainwashed.
** Sailor Moon's brief hope when she sees Tuxedo Kamen. Then he demands the crystal and lets the youma attack her. Rei has a similar reaction when Minako tells them what happened.
* The Lake Yokai's defeat / cleansing. Unlike everyone else who were turned into monsters, she's long dead and has no body to go back to after being hit with Moon Healing Escalation but can finally rest in peace. It's even touching enough to seemingly turn Mamoru back to normal for a few moments.
* Episode 42: Minako's backstory and the fallout from it:
** Minako finds out that an old friend named Katerina wants to meet with her. She goes discreetly to a hotel. Artemis notes that it's not like Minako to be sad, so he goes to tell Usagi about his suspicions. That ends up being the right call.
** Katerina gives Minako a WhatTheHellHero for faking her death. She says that she missed her, and was grieving for quite some time. Minako doesn't have a response, trying to dance around the issue. Presumably, those words were not from Kunzite possessing her and making her change into a youma, since Minako sees that Katerina's locket has a photo of Minako, Katerina, and Alan.
** Kunzite compels Katerina to transform into Papillon to attack Sailor V and interrogate her. Venus transforms but gets caught. She recognizes the locket she gave Katerina and becomes dismayed that her friend was possessed.
** Usagi has rescued Minako while in a sailor's guise, and they are all catching their breath. Usagi, in a great show of maturity, tells Luna that if Minako isn't comfortable about telling them the full story, that it's perfectly fine. She also looks uncharacteristically sad on realizing her new friend must have been through something terrible. This gives Minako the courage to get into the full flashback.
** Minako explains that she was still Sailor V in London, came to work with Katerina when they started rescuing people from youma attacks. All seemed well, and they even befriended a man named Alan. Minako crushed on him. Then Minako got caught in a bombing that would have killed her, and Katerina sobbed into Alan's arms on thinking Sailor V was dead. Sailor V realized they were attracted to each other, and her face falls. Crying in turn, she disappears from the scene and travels to Japan. It's so sad that Usagi immediately goes LetsGetDangerous and vows to avenge Minako's broken heart.
** Katerina and Minako's reconciliation. When Sailor Moon heals her, Katerina regains her senses, and seems to understand what happened with Alan was hurtful to everyone. She then apologizes to Minako, treating her like a child and a kid sister, rather than an equal. Minako hugs her while crying, realizing that it was wrong to make Katerina worry.
* The song [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgp9I6OpgoQ "Hoshi-Tachi ni Mamorarete"]] which is first used when Usagi is broken after the loss of her friends but finds comfort in her memories of them. It's impossible to listen to the song without tearing up a little bit.
* Another general Viz example. Those familiar with English dubs know that Creator/StephanieSheh is a talented actress, [[Manga/{{Bleach}} and given]] [[Manga/KOn some of her ]] [[Literature/AccelWorld previous]] [[Anime/{{K}} roles]], fans of English dubs had no doubt she could pull off the ditziness of Usagi's character. However, some were worried that when it came time for the emotional scenes, she'd not be able to pull off the range and delivery the story called for. [[SugarWiki/HeReallyCanAct She delivered alright, in spades.]] One of the most gut-wrenching demonstrations came in episode 35 when Usagi has an emotional breakdown from the sudden responsibility of being the Moon Princess. When the character laughs, Ms. Sheh is bubbly and cute, but when she cries, she sounds completely broken and lost. After that scene, it was fair to say that skeptics of the dub were silenced.
* The unedited two-part finale of the first season includes:
** Usagi trying to cook for her family and [[LethalChef failing spectacularly]]. The mood quickly changes when it's apparent ([[RewatchBonus especially on a rewatch]]) that Usagi is doing so because it might be the last time she ever sees them. The BackgroundMusic stops ''cold'' and you can visibly see tears in her eyes. She ''tries'' to pass it off as just the food being bad, but that's clearly not the case.
** In addition to the above is Usagi's conversation with the rest of the girls before they teleport to D-Point. They all know what's at stake, but she's the only one to really voice it and be openly afraid of what might happen.
** Every single friggin death of the Sailor Senshi (although they do [[UnexplainedRecovery get better]].)
*** Jupiter begs her friends to leave, then performs a suicide attack ("You dare to attack ME with lightning?!"). Jupiter was always the [[TheBigGuy "warrior"]] of the group and she checked out being caught by a cruel trick without a chance to really fight for her life.
*** Mercury abandons the team for a mission to destroy the illusion device that already cost them Jupiter's life. She and the others know but refuse to say that she will not come back alive. She is killed by the DD girls, but destroys the device by slamming her computer into the forehead of the women wearing it.
*** Worse still... Mercury at this point has little in terms of offensive abilities, with her power to date best suited for creating mist on the battlefield. So she KNOWS that she can’t do much in terms of combat, so she just stands there, a distraction as the others run and try to get away, and her fight takes place just a short distance away from where Jupiter dies.
*** After Sailor Mercury’s death, Sailor Moon breaks down, provoking Sailor Mars to yell at her for crying. One could glean from this, and her subdued reaction to Jupiter's death, that Mars is simply unfazed by the death of her fellow Senshi, then she reminds Moon that they have to focus on dealing with their enemies, with tears welling in her eyes. Moon wasn’t the only one heartbroken by Mercury’s death, it’s just that Mars knew they couldn’t afford to be distracted by their emotions.
*** After losing two teammates, Sailor Venus gets yanked underground and tortured to death while Sailor Moon tries to offer the Silver Crystal in exchange for her life. Venus still kills one at point blank range before she dies. Before Venus died, when Sailor Moon tried offering the Crystal, Venus got so angry she screamed at Usagi "''You give it to them and I'll never forgive you!''" In retrospect, we've seen how much Venus has had to sacrifice for the sake of being a Sailor Soldier and she's still dedicated to it, so she most likely legitimately would've hated Usagi if she gave them the Crystal.
*** Sailor Mars tells Sailor Moon [[ItHasBeenAnHonor that it was all fun, knowing she'll never get another chance]]. The last of the DD girls arrive to kill them. Sailor Mars smiles and swears to take care of it, knowing full well she is going to die. When the last DD Girl produces what appears to be her corpse and moves to attack Sailor Moon, Mars gets out one last Fire Soul to kill her before dying while wishing she'd kissed Yuichiro when she had the chance.
** Now left all alone, Usagi has one of the most gut-wrenching breakdowns in the entire series, crying her eyes out and insisting to herself that this is all a nightmare, that she's going to wake up and everything will be normal again, and all her friends will be there and they can live happy lives together. It's legitimately a hard scene to watch, as Usagi's grief is portrayed so convincingly.
** Usagi being comforted by her memories of the [[WeAreTeamCannonFodder now-deceased]] Sailor Senshi after she hopes that it's all been just a really bad dream. They tell her that they'll always be together. "That's right... I'm not alone! Never alone!" * sniff*
*** Sailor Moon finally succeeds in saving Mamoru from Metalia and Beryl's brainwashing...and not a moment later, he dies protecting her from an enraged Beryl. Bonus points - she tries to kiss his corpse after he passes, but stops because none of her friends were allowed to kiss the ones they loved before their deaths.
*** And let's not forget, that despite her HeroicSacrifice against Queen Metalia possessing Beryl, Sailor Moon herself also dies, which can be a tearjerking moment for those that watch it.
** Luna goes OhCrap when she senses at the Tsukino household that Usagi is going to use the Silver Crystal. She prepares to run to the North Pole to stop her. Artemis gets in her way and points out the obvious: while they're both injured, there is no way they're going to make it in time. All Luna can do is scream helplessly into the sky to beg Usagi not to sacrifice her life to stop Beryl. She really came to care for her first Senshi.
** Just Sailor Moon is dying she wishes for her normal life before she became Sailor Moon to come back and she recounts all the things she's used to from her everyday life as she wishes for them back and it is heartbreaking.
** And on top of that, because of that wish, although Usagi and her friends get brought back to life, they completely lose their memories of not only being Sailor Guardians, but also their memories of being friends with each other. In fact, it stays this way for ''2 months''. And as we see in the flashbacks in the ''Sailor Moon R'' movie, Usagi's friends all had pretty lonely and depressing lives before meeting Usagi. In other words, they end up being friendless ''for 2 months''! It must've been especially hard for Rei and Minako, who don't attend Usagi, Ami, and Makoto's (which she is a transfer student to) school.
** Unlike the manga / Crystal / Eternal version of Sailor Moon, this one specifically ''cannot'' resurrect people on a whim and it's repeatedly said throughout the series that using the full power of the Silver Crystal is certain death. Not only did Usagi luck out in this instance (and at the end of ''Sailor Stars'', though in that case it was due to Galaxia returning the Star Seeds), but she came to realize that every single battle after that might end up the same way and there'd be no guarantee that she'd be able to revive anyone, to the point it affects her badly at the start of ''R'', the ''R movie'' and to a lesser extent the rest of the series. Remember that despite her past life / lineage she's still ''a 14-16 year old girl'' who has had to endure far more than she should, and instead of running away she always faces it head on because there's nobody else who can.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Doom Tree Arc]]
* Episode 47 (when Usagi gets her LaserGuidedAmnesia undone by Luna and bloodcurdlingly screams [[BigNo "NO!"]] when she remembers that she's Sailor Moon, and sadly says [[IJustWantToBeNormal "Futsuu no Usagi-chan ni... bai bai..."/"To the ordinary Usagi... bai bai...]] after finishing off the MonsterOfTheWeek. Luna's expression even changes from angry (at Ail and An) to worried concern before she says it. Heartbreaking.)
** Creator/StephanieSheh does a very good job with this scene in the re-dub.
--> '''Sailor Moon''': Goodbye, my ordinary life. It was fun while it lasted.
* Episode 49 had Makoto's backstory of her sempai that she had remained brokenhearted over for the longest time. The hurt look on her face and that ''song'' can be seen in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5ObwFjSMbg&feature=related this scene]]. The original English dub did a surprisingly good job with an [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFtyWN9m8ak&feature=related English song]]. In fact, the whole episode became somewhat of a tearjerker in that Makoto had given blood to her best friend Shinozaki (who was never mentioned again) because he had been injured saving her from the Cardian and her fight scene became close to a SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome to her, seen [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrrlfTxAKKg here]]. A time that someone ''besides'' Usagi could actually defeat the monster.
** From the same episode, Usagi breaking down in tears and scared to death that Makoto could die fighting as Sailor Jupiter because she was still weak after giving blood. She was still horribly traumatized at what happened to everyone at D-Point.
* Episode 51: Renewed Transformation: Usagi's Powerup
** In the episode where Usagi gets her first MidSeasonUpgrade, Haruna-sensei finds Naru and Umino passed out [[CherryBlossoms at the feet of a cherry tree]]. The poor woman panics at the sight of her two collapsed students and [[BrokenTears tearfully begs]] a nearby person for medical help... Too bad said "person" is the MonsterOfTheWeek, and she knocks her out too.
** The Cardian manages to catch most of the Senshi before they can transform and starts stealing their energy. They're unable to help Sailor Moon, whose tiara stops working in the middle of its attack. The Cardian then leaps on Sailor Moon and breaks her brooch, coming very close to killing her. Then a strange hole opens up under Usagi, sucking her and Luna inside. The [=DiC=] dub makes it ''worse'' when the Senshi while ForcedToWatch scream for Sailor Moon to save herself and leave them.
*** After Usagi and Luna have disappeared, Ami, Makoto, and Minako all gasp in horror and start crying as she screams "''USAGI!''"
** Usagi while in the strange dimension with Luna finally admits why her powers are not working; she hasn't wanted to be Sailor Moon since her memories returned, and that's been affecting her battling skills. But now there is no choice; her personal feelings don't matter if her friends are in danger.
* In an earlier episode where Rei is in charge of the cultural festival and is closing it off by performing songs she wrote her self she claims that she had no problem writing these songs. Of course the scene cuts to Rei writing the songs and actually shows how upset and frustrated Rei got as she struggled to write the songs.
** When the MonsterOfTheWeek closes in to attack Rei after beating up the other Senshi, she accidentally knocks down the tripod with Rei's song lyrics. Rei is ''horrified'' at the sight and has a flashback to her harsh songwriting days, which drives her to start crying borderline BerserkerTears as she screams [[ThisIsUnforgivable "I will never forgive you... NEVER!"]] and gets her MidSeasonUpgrade.
* Episode 59
** Ail and An realizing that Usagi and Mamoru never had feelings for them respectively. Even worse was that they had the Doom Tree steal energy from the two, though not enough to kill them.
** An's full-on {{Yandere}} breakdown is frightening at first, but by the end it's just sad, with An ranting to the Moonlight Knight about how she and Ail have been alone all their lives and never received love from anyone, so they had to take whatever was necessary to survive. It really puts into perspective how these two ended up the way they are.
** (An's DisneyDeath and Ail's reaction to it, complete with two SayMyName moments as well as PietaPlagiarism.)
** The Doom Tree's story: its children when they arrived started fighting each other, consumed by hate. They ended up murdering each other while the Tree could only watch - the only reason it is able to talk currently is because of Usagi's power. By the time Ail and An were conceived, they had no way of knowing what their parent, the Doom Tree, really wanted: love, not energy. Ail while holding An's body looks regretful in how he failed to understand what the Doom Tree needed. When Usagi does a Princess Halation to heal the tree, she worries that she's killed it.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Black Moon Clan Arc]]
* Episode 61: Usagi has noted that Mamoru is rebuffing her, which is unusual. She is hurt and confused. After Usagi fails at getting back together with Mamoru, she then walks down the street, stops at a phone booth, locks herself in it, and breaks down crying.
* Usagi's dream in episode 62: The Friendship of the Sailor Warriors! Goodbye Ami!
** Most of the episode as well. Especially Ami's image song or, in the first English dub, "Only a Memory Away".
* Episode 69, where Usagi thinks Mamoru dumped her for another girl who turns out to be his best friend's little sister (this was around the time that Mamoru had recurring nightmares of marrying Usagi and a voice telling him to stay away from her or the universe would be destroyed), there's a part where Usagi is in front of the refrigerator, stuffing her face out of depression, though that's nothing compared to the scene.
** Also in Episode 69, the MonsterOfTheWeek puts Sailor Moon in a sort of trance that starts to drain her life away. The Sailor Guardians can't get her to wake up. Luna leaves the scene as she has flashbacks of Usagi stuffing her face from earlier that night. Luna gets to Mamoru place and pleads with him to come save her. At first he's reluctant (because he still believes he's trying to protect her) but eventually goes and saves her when Luna tells him she's dying. This is a HopeSpot for Sailor Moon, but he just turns a cold shoulder to her again after the enemy is defeated. The rose that he used wilts and loses its petals. And ''then'' we see Mamoru on his own in the nearby river, crying and quietly saying "Usako, I'm sorry..."
** Even worse, Usagi and Mamoru do not get back together until Episode ''77'', ''16 episodes'' after the break up.
* Episode 70 in which Sailor Moon purifies Koan. Koan is madly in love with Rubeus, but he doesn't care at all about her. So when she fails him again while fighting Sailor Mars, he gives her a space-time bomb that will kill everything in the area, including her. Koan starts crying, accepts her death and tells Mars "You won". The other Guardians arrive and thwart her plan but Koan starts attacking them out of anger and sadness, saying she's useless and that she has lost everything. Just as Sailor Jupiter is about to lay a kick on her, Mars takes the hit for her and says Koan hasn't lost everything and can fix her life little by little and begs Sailor Moon to purify her.
** Koan's speech, solidifying she's gone past the DespairEventHorizon, is as sad in the original sub, the Viz dub, and, surprisingly, the first English dub. It seems Mary Long's voice acting in the original dub tended to be better during more emotional scenes, and it helps that the writing made it a bit more personal by making Catzi refer to Rubeus by name instead of as "Master."
*** Original Sub:
---->'''Koan''': It's already too late. You win. It seems that the love I believed in was wrong.
*** [=DiC=] Dub:
---->'''Catzi''': It's too late! He hates me. Everyone does. Rubeus, the only man I ever really loved, but it was a lie!
*** Viz Dub:
---->'''Koan''': No. It's too late...You win. Sailor Mars, you were right. My love wasn't real.
* Due to Rubeus generally being a {{Jerkass}} to the Spectre Sisters, they all have a [[HeelFaceTurn turning point]] that involves them reaching a DespairEventHorizon. Berthier's moment had Koan coming after her as she tried to freeze herself to death, walking through all the obstacles that the crying and suicidal Berthier tosses at her, and telling her that yes, she's loved, which manages to strike a chord in her and finally stop her from killing herself.
** What's sadder about this moment is the context behind it - Berthier had been [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness totally thrown off her game]] by Koan's HeelFaceTurn, feared that she would fail, and just ''knew'' that if she did, her two older sisters would abandon her. After they do exactly that, Berthier begins crying [[StepfordSmiler despite still having a smile on her face]] and admitting that even when knowing that this would happen, she still clung to the hope that it wouldn't because her sisters loved her. She then tells the Senshi that they can laugh at her for being so foolish...then she stops smiling and yells ''"I said laugh!"'' before attempting a [[TakingYouWithMe suicide attack.]]
* Episode 73 featured the Inner Senshi being abducted by Rubeus as they tried to protect Chibi-Usa. And Usagi is driven to horrified tears when it happens, blaming Chibi-Usa for it, because if Chibi-Usa hadn't stolen Usagi's brooch to use her Silver Crystal, she could've saved the girls. At this moment, Usagi is so [[BerserkerTears utterly angry]] at Chibi-Usa, she would've started ''hitting her'' had Mamoru not intervened. And all Chibi-Usa does is close her eyes and wait for it to happen, [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone having realized how BADLY she screwed up.]] Fortunately, she soon gets the chance to make amends and help Moon rescue the Senshi.
* Even with this DarkestHour, and Usagi considers just giving up Chibi-Usa for her friends, she can't go through with it. Instead, she goes alone to meet Rubeus, fully prepared to fight him or to face a penalty for not having "the Rabbit". She goes OhCrap on seeing Chibi-Usa behind her at the rendezvous point, telling her that it's not her problem. Chibi-Usa insists that it is, as Rubeus captures them both.
* Episode 80, Ami was being accused of cheating on an exam and the way she's just looked down by the other students is heartbreaking. Later in the episode,the Monster Of the Day shoots a beam at her to make her have illusions that her friends are against her. While "they" are all saying that, there are clips of the other Guardians happy and normal, making the scene all the more sad. The scene is just as sad in both English dubs.
** Ami in this episode as a whole. She constantly reassures that's she is fine with the other students mistreating her because she knows she's innocent, but the girls all know she's only stating this to save face and is actually very hurt by what's happening but for some reason won't acknowledge it and refuses to show weakness. When the students bully her again outside of the school, [[RunningAwayToCry Ami runs into a corner to cry without being seen]].
* When Chibi-Usa brings everyone to the time door, she expects Pluto to be angry with her for breaking the rule. When Chibi-Usa apologizes, Pluto raises her hand, and Chibi-Usa gets scared, closes her eyes, and ducks a little. Pluto instead gently pats her head...
* Pluto says she can't join the Senshi in their trip to the future, because she has to guard the time door. She can, however, send them on the right path. Pluto does so and wishes them luck.
* When Chibi-Usa sees Neo Tokyo in ruins, she runs off calling for her mother. The Senshi and Tuxedo Kamen chase after her, frantic about where she's gone. Sailor Moon is relieved that Endymion found her, safe and sleeping.
* A more sobering Fridge moment: Chibi-Usa heard legends of Sailor Moon from her father, but she never realized Sailor Moon and her mother were the same.
* Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Kamen's reaction to realizing that Endymion, Mamoru's future self, was the one sending them the nightmares about a BadFuture. Tuxedo Kamen charges at Endymion, who ends up being a hologram, and Sailor Moon angrily demands an explanation.
* Doubling as NightmareFuel, that Demande was about to forcibly kiss Usagi, a fourteen-year old, because he's obsessed with her thousand-year old future self. To him either version of Sailor Moon is an object to be obtained and not a person. When he paralyzes her to do the deed, she starts crying and thinking about Mamoru, who thankfully then shows up to stop the bastard in his tracks.
* Esmeraude of all people saves Usagi and Mamoru by sending dark magic to distract Dimande while the pair make their getaway. Saphir confronts her for it, and she admits she's jealous of Dimande's obsession for Sailor Moon. He then commiserates with her, saying that he feels the same way.
* TheReveal that Chibi-Usa accidentally stole the Silver Crystal, which was why she had run away when the Black Moon invaded. Neo-Queen Serenity went searching for her, without any means of protecting herself, and got injured as a result. Wiseman forces Chibi-Usa to relive those memories, making her think it's her fault that her home fell, before turning the tables and making her believe it's in fact everyone else's fault, and corrupting her into becoming Black Lady.
* Esmeraude's fate. Over the course of her time as the face of the Black Moon clan against the Sailor Senshi, it seems like her [[SanitySlippage sanity begins to unravel,]] with Demande becoming more and more obsessed with Neo-Queen Serenity, ignoring her, but even in comparison to the others, her death is just tragic, as while Demande and Saphir have the opportunity to have their eyes opened and recognize that they'd crossed the MoralEventHorizon, Wiseman tricks her into turning herself into a mindless monster the Senshi have to destroy, not even having the chance at redemption. Worse, Wiseman pretty much does it because he considers her a nuisance, not for any other reason.
** Right after Emeraude's horribly morphed body is destroyed, the Senshi have a brief vision of her lifeless body. At the same time, Demande senses her death (complete with an imagine spot of Esmeraude screaming as she falls into an abyss) and looks almost sad, murmuring her name.
* Saphir's death! The guy, who's been nothing but dutiful towards his brother, Demande, finds out about Wiseman's true intentions, and tries to warn him. But because HeKnowsTooMuch, Wiseman attempts to kill him. Saphir escapes, ends up back in the hands of the sisters, but still tries to warn Demande of the danger they're in that Wiseman is using him. In the end, Wiseman kills Saphir off (in front of Demande no less) before he can spill the beans. And then the bandages on Saphir's head fall off, revealing he's truly [[HeelFaceTurn turned good/been purified on his own free will]]. And to drive it further, there's a flashback of Demande and Saphir as kids looking at flowers, and Demande promising his little brother that one day they'll see flowers on Earth and live there. Saphir's death was every bit as painful for Demande as it was for the audience, since this means he'll never get to fulfill his promises to Saphir. Also at the moment of his death, the jacket he left with Petz falls from where it's hanging on the wall and she realizes he's died. Even worse, the said jacket later disappears from while Petz is holding it. Damn, it's just heartbreaking.
** Normally, Usagi can heal people with her crystal and she has before. By the time she arrives, however, it's too late and he's already passed on. In both dubs, Sailor Moon starts crying for him to hang on for Petz's sake and her helplessness is agonizing.
** In the [=DIC=], Saphir's last thought is an apology to Petz who is known as Prisma. He really loved her.
** Demande's reaction doesn't help. He sees Saphir fall, and he starts tearing up. Demande then approaches Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Kamen, who left on really bad terms with him before. In a moment of OOCIsSeriousBusiness, he picks up Saphir's body, mutters "Wiseman," and walks away without doing anything else.
* Episode 87 (Usagi and Naru's talk right before Usagi launches her last attack on Black Moon, to de-brainwash Chibi-Usa and defeat the enemy, with the heavily implication that [[SecretKeeper Naru knows Usagi's secret.]]
* When being brainwashed into Black Lady, Chibi-Usa has a dream about being abandoned on her birthday. Takanori Arisawa's BackgroundMusic playing while she cries just makes it a thousand times worse.
** The other dream/flashback could count too. Chibi-Usa runs after a frog and slips in the rain when she ignores her mother's warning not to run. Her parents, because she didn't listen, refuse to help. The way Chibi-Usa views this is indeed heartbreaking, as she sees it as her parents ''wanting'' her to be hurt rather than wanting her to learn to be self-sufficient (as we learn a few episodes down the road).
** Chibi-Usa alone could qualify. Yes, yes, she's a brat at times, but think about it. She's a five-year-old kid who's desperate to save her mother and her kingdom, but has no idea how to go about it, all the while being pursued by villains out to murder her. On top of that, it's been established that [[LonelyRichKid she was VERY lonely back home]], to the point of being terrified that no one really loves her. Underneath all that brattiness lies a lost, scared, lonely little girl who just wants to go home and have things be normal again. And on top of it, her home was invaded because of something she did, and her mother was severely injured ''to protect her'', and Chibi-Usa is totally traumatized by the memories.
* Demande's death. He had finally realized that his brother was right about Wiseman and remembered his original objective (see the section of Saphir's death), and fights Wiseman to avenge Saphir and Esmeraude. When Wiseman directs two energy blades at Sailor Moon, Demande [[HeroicSacrifice jumps in front of her and is impaled]]. He dies in Sailor Moon's arms, having found his redemption and saying he'd change his ways at this point if he could, and his sacrifice shows he now truly cares for Sailor Moon, and, as she points out, that he does have a heart. Though his love for her is unrequited she still sheds tears for him.

[[folder:Mugen/Infinity Arc]]
* The very first episode of the season: Rei is the first target for her pure heart and, until Uranus and Neptune return her heart crystal, the other Inners are fully convinced that she's dead, as evidence by Ami saying "She's not breathing" and the lack of light in her eyes at all. Not only are the other girls ([[MyFriendsAndZoidberg and Mamoru]]) powerless since they got caught before transforming, but Usagi had been BroughtDownToNormal after her brooch was damaged by the MonsterOfTheWeek. As Usagi watched Rei being stripped of her Crystal, she had flashbacks to a conversation that she and Rei had earlier, and since she couldn't do anything to save her, she was crying and begging for help for Rei...
* In episode 97, where Ami feels like she is only valued for her intelligence. That on its own is depressing, but the big tear jerker comes when when Ami gets captured and has her pure heart crystal shot out. Sailor Moon tearfully pleads with the MonsterOfTheWeek to return it, explaining how important Ami is to her and everyone else. Becomes a bit SugarWiki/{{Heartwarming|Moments}} because Ami hears every word she says.
* Third season, Episode 99. [[spoiler:Yuuichirou gets ready to leave the Hikawa shrine after (mistakenly) thinking Rei is being seduced by a two-timing Haruka, and Rei being in the verge of an HeroicBSOD at Yuuichirou's lack of trust in her. Rei asking Usagi in tears "Why? Why... why didn't he trust me until the end...?" is ''heartbreaking'' even for those who don't ship Yuu/Rei.]] And then there's ''that goddamned song'' played in the background... * weeps*
* Episode 106, where Haruka and Michiru's backstory is told. There was something incredibly depressing about Michiru sacrificing her career as a violinist just to save Haruka from becoming a senshi. Not to mention that it becomes even more depressing when Michiru confesses that she was the girl who wanted nothing more than being with Haruka. (She'd mentioned "that girl" when she first met Haruka.)
* Episode 109. There's something utterly depressing about Minako thinking she's not "pure" enough. And then that scene, where Eudial/Eugeal shoots her... and instead of immediately losing consciousness, she runs off laughing insanely with the crystal.
* Episode 110: Michiru and Haruka's Talismans appear, and the famous hands scene where Haruka angsts as she considers herself tainted, and Michiru comforts her. The second is made sadder because it's followed several scenes in which the saddened Inners recall how they've tried to talk to them to no avail.
-->Minako: "B-but we're all Senshi..."
-->Haruka: "Please forget it! We can't get along."
** The Death of Neptune. SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic. No more words.
* Hotaru's childhood flashbacks in episode 115 are really sad. She didn't want to hurt anyone, but an evil force within her takes control of her sometimes during her seizures and makes her hurt everyone around her, like her pet goldfish or classmates, which makes everyone see her as a monster and isolate her, making Hotaru unable to have any friends. This becomes even sadder when you see that Hotaru doesn't know why she unconsciously hurts people.
* There's a small tear jerking moment in episode 120. Chibi-Usa goes to Hotaru's home to find her, but it's deserted. She finds Setsuna, but instead of being happy to see her, she gets angry and tells Setsuna she hates her. On the surface, it sounds like Chibi-Usa just being a brat, but consider she's lost her best friend (who was kidnapped ''right in front of her'' while she was helpless to save her) and there are three people, one of whom is Setsuna, who want her dead and refuse to consider there may be an alternate solution. It gets more tear jerking when you remember just a season ago, she very nearly lost someone else extremely close to her. Chibi-Usa isn't angry. She's ''hurting'' because she's tired of all the trouble, all the pain, and all she wants at that moment is her best friend back.
* Kaorinite's death in the Sailor Moon S series is always saddening. She did ''everything'' for that Tomoe, or at least she thought she did. Getting thrown back into an electric barrier would also probably hurt very much. It doesn't make it any better when you realize that Kaorinite even ''sacrificed'' herself attempting to defeat the senshi, only to be resurrected, only to be disposed of by Mistress Nine simply because "her job was now over."
* The deaths of a few of the Witches Five also qualify as well. Eudial, simply because she was Mimette's ''butt monkey'' and was the victim of many a prank. Viluy, because she devoted her life to her machines, even as she vanishes, Mercury says "Poor girl..." and lastly, Mimette, who even had a brief HeelFaceTurn when thinking of not being a bad person anymore; although she technically didn't die, she's simply stuck inside a giant TV when [[spoiler: Tellu]] pulls the plug with her inside... which is a FateWorseThanDeath.
* As Mistress 9/Hotaru becomes more schizophrenic, Dr. Tomoe thinking back to Hotaru as a child with him. He cries at the memory and apologizes profusely.
** Don't forget the scene in which we learn ''why'' is this happening. The then-normal Tomoe and Hotaru were caught in an experiment GoneHorriblyWrong that made Tomoe's original lab go KABOOM, killing Tomoe's assistants (and apparently, Hotaru's mother Keiko). A badly injured Tomoe found a dying Hotaru and crosses the DespairEventHorizon, screaming that he'd do anything to save his daughter's life. Then, Pharaoh 90 appears and offers him a DealWithTheDevil to save her...]] And the way the scene is set up is brilliant as well as heartbreaking: the flashback is actually Hotaru's [[PastExperienceNightmare bad dreams]]. She's herself for a while instead of the DarkMessiah, is taking a nap in her "throne", and as she sleeps she recalls the very moment that changed her and her father's life for the worse...
* Third season climax: Hotaru's just overcome Mistress Nine and tranforms into Sailor Saturn. She explains to Sailor Moon that she is, indeed, the "Soldier of Destruction" that Uranus and Neptune feared, and calmly states that when she use her power, she will be destroyed. She then thanks them for everything, and goes off to battle Pharaoh 90. Sailor Moon is aghast, tries to power up into Super Sailor Moon--and her transformation fails because the Grail was destroyed. She keeps trying, and each time she shouts "CRISIS MAKE-UP!" she sounds more and more desperate and pounds the pavement below her in frustration until her fist begins bleeding. Just thinking about Sailor Moon on all fours, sobbing "Why?"... Even Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune, who until this moment were upset and utterly incensed with Sailor Moon's interference, felt sorry for her. At the brink of hysteria, she tries one last time and the powers of the other Senshi combine and her pure heart crystal forces itself out of her body to allow her to transform. When finished her eyes are blank with tears streaming down her face and goes to join Sailor Saturn in battle.
** [[https://missdream.org/natalie-interview-mitsuishi-kotono-osabu/ This is Kotono Mitsuishi's favorite scene.]]
* How can this not be mentioned here? The sad theme of Sailor Saturn playing while appearing to Sailor Moon and just as she plans to sacrifice herself? Just listening to the music in this is extremely saddening, especially the violin.
** Generally, [[SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic the background music in Sailor Moon manages to capture the mood perfectly]]. The music when the Inners try to deal with the revelation of the Outers's identities in 110, the music when Neptune "dies" in the same episode, the music when Usagi sees Mamoru's star seed amongst the others, the music when Queen Serenity dies and uses the silver crystal to revive everybody, the pocket watch... there are many, many more examples.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Yume/Dream Arc]]
* Episode 132, where Usagi covers Mamoru from the RubberWoman MonsterOfTheWeek, which results in her almost suffocating to death as Mamoru desperately screams her name all over.
** That was ''such'' a TearJerker that ''the MonsterOfTheWeek'' [[LampshadeHanging tears up.]]
* The death of the Amazon Trio. Fish starts to wonder who they really are, even attacking Tiger and seeing that they have no Dream Mirrors; later, Fish has a VillainousBSOD and just sits under the rain until Usagi comes to his rescue, and then we have the worst/best part: Usagi being captured, {{Mind Rape}}d by the MonsterOfTheWeek (which was NOT sent by the Trio) and ''having her Mirror shattered'', letting out a yell of pain and almost becoming an EmptyShell. Fish's own screams of utter horror and despair is heartbreaking. This is followed by Hawk TakingTheBullet for Fish, Fish and Tiger pulling an HeroicSacrifice to save Usagi and retrieve Chibi-Usa so they can defeat the monster, and then Helios rescuing their souls after they die. Really, that two-parter was MADE of this trope, and it was one of the best parts of the ''Super S'' season.
* Super S might have been unpopular, but episode 152 had a surprisingly powerful scene. A girl named Nanako [[OneeSama is pretty much infatuated with Rei and follows her around like a puppy]], wanting to become a {{Miko}} like her. Rei at first thinks it's funny, but later she sees it [[StalkerWithoutACrush as creepy and overbearing]], and then she snaps and says she wants Nanako to go get a life... Poor Nanako hears this and is heartbroken, running away in tears. She's then captured by the Amazon Quartet, who release a Monkey-themed MonsterOfTheWeek which, in the middle of the fight, eats Nanako's Dream Mirror to power itself up... then [[http://www.soul-hunter.com/sailormoon/galleryscreencaps/152/index6.php changes her features to make itself look like Nanako]] [[KickTheDog and starts to openly mock her]], revealing that she imitated Rei because she was ProneToTears [[HeroicSelfDeprecation without any self-esteem.]] What seals the deal is that we then see a half-unconscious Nanako ''softly crying and begging the monster to stop belittling her''. Rei is [[ThisIsUnforgivable so pissed off]] at the enemy when she finds out that she suits up into Mars and pulls her MidSeasonUpgrade, the Mars [[KillItWithFire Flame Sniper]], alongside a SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome that lets her beat the monster enough to have Moon and Chibi Moon kill it. And much to the audience and the cast's relief, despite all the BreakTheCutie, Nanako gets better and is able to search for her own goals.
* Episode 164: Pegasus returns to his body as Helios. Chibi Moon and Helios are about to be pulled apart from each other, but grab each others' hands, and Helios yells "Chibi-Usa-chan!" and Chibi Moon says "That's the first time you've said my name..." And her desperate screams when the Golden Crystal is taken from Helios and he disappears.
* Nehellenia throws Chibi-Usa off the cliff and Usagi dives after her, first desperate but calm, until she's in her arms and falling past skyscrapers and Usagi begs, "Please, Chibi-Usa! I want us to become adults together..." The scene was animated just beautifully and really expressed the mother/daughter love between the two.
** Usagi crying at the line, "At this rate, we'll both lose our future...!"
* The end of [=SuperS=] Anime. Chibi-Usa and Helios promising to meet each other again, all very cute. From Helios' point of view, though, Chibi-Usa travelled from the 30th Century to the 20th Century ... [[FridgeHorror and you realize he has to wait a century or worse, a millenium, to see her again]]. That last hug and the strings version of "Watashi-tachi Ni Naritakute" was just very emotional.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Stars Arc]]
* The whole finale of the Nehelenia arc, but especially Hotaru's battle. "Those eyes again... [[DontYouDarePityMe DON'T LOOK AT ME]] [[AngerBornOfWorry WITH SUCH EYES]]!" And Chibi-Usa trying to revive her father in the background was painful. As well as her ''disappearing out of existence'' in the arms of an injured, exhausted, almost defeated Usagi (pictured above is the moment when Chibi-Usa fully vanishes, leaving poor Usagi with her arms empty). It can also count as AlasPoorScrappy as well.
** Lest we forget Usagi telling Nehelenia that she can't imagine living as lonely and sad as she did (after Nehelenia explains her FreudianExcuse and StartOfDarkness), then sweetly begging her to let go of the others and focus only on her, if she truly wants revenge. And then we see the {{Magic Mirror}}s the Senshi are trapped in and [[EverybodyCries ''every single one'' (even the ''Outers'') are ''weeping'']] as they foresee Usagi's upcoming HeroicSacrifice. Heck, ''even the brainwashed Mamoru cries'', which saves him from his brainwashing.
** You really can't bring up Hotaru's standoff against Nehellenia without addressing the fact that she's like a week AT MOST into actually LIVING. Sailor Saturn has previously been implied to exist solely to die, to bring about an end and then return to slumber until another end is needed. Yet this time, she was reborn without needing to bring about the end, thanks to Usagi. She could live. She could have a life. She could be a person. And yet here she is, unwaveringly willing to die just to stop Nehellenia, and not flinching from it. [[IronWoobie Someone give this girl a damn hug.]]
* Episode 194 with Usagi breaking down because Seiya threw a rose during the battle and saying that she didn't want to be alone. Made all the better by Seiya asking her quietly if he's good enough. It's hard to make words do justice-- Creator/KotonoMitsuishi's [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-juH7wyC1nw performance is just gut-wrenching]].
* Sailor Tin Nyanko's own death is tragic, since it was revealed earlier in the same that she was once a former Sailor Guardian who had been corrupted and controlled by Galaxia. Due to one of her mind control bracelets having been destroyed in the previous episode, [[FightingFromTheInside her original, heroic personality had begun to reassert itself]], clashing with Galaxia's brainwashing. The Inner Senshi even intervened during her battle with the Starlights, Neptune and Uranus, with Rei saying that they should try to help her, not kill her. Then Galaxia shows up [[HeelFaceDoorSlam and casually murders her]], and Usagi and the others can't do anything except watch her scream as she dies. What's more is that unlike [[YouHaveFailedMe Iron Mouse and Aluminum Siren]], she complements Tin Nyanko on a job well done for luring Kakyuu there but [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness kills her anyway]].
** [[HarsherInHindsight Even worse]]: Even if Sailor Moon was successful in removing Tin Nyanko's second bracelet, she likely would have died anyway thanks to the simple fact that she no longer had her Star Seed. The bracelets were what was keeping her alive in the first place. [[FailureIsTheOnlyOption There was no saving her.]]
* And many, ''many'' moments in episodes 195-200 (Kakyuu's HeroicSacrifice and its effects on the Starlights, Seiya's "Am I not good enough?" scene, the Senshi's own deaths, Usagi finding out that Mamoru died through BusCrash, Uranus and Neptune's last stand and deaths, Usagi's defeat of Galaxia via ThePowerOfLove instead of killing her).
** And let's not forget the moment right after that, where Usagi is left hanging, ''all alone'', until she hears first Rei, then Mamoru calling to her...
** On the subject of the revelation of Mamoru's [[BusCrash death via Bus Crash]], what's the very last thing Rei says to Usagi? [[HopeSpot "At least you still have Mamoru."]] She says it before the reveal.
** As well, with the last stand of Uranus and Neptune, we get a HopeSpot when their music starts playing... then cue the sudden cut of the music as it is revealed that their plan, which involved ''killing Saturn and Pluto'', was all for nothing. And then you see the two of them, who '''always''' fight to the end, just give up...
---> '''Uranus''': Are you scared, Michiru?
---> '''Neptune''': Haruka...
---> '''Uranus''': What?
---> '''Neptune''': I want to touch you... Haruka...
*** Usagi, naturally, provides the kicker - Uranus and Neptune have just proven that everything they did was just to stop Galaxia, including killing Pluto and Saturn, and, as is Usagi's nature, she's not angry at them, just desperate for them not to die, not to have to watch as two more of her friends die.
** The conversation in 195 (which takes place soon after the "I want to see you, Mamo-chan!" moment) in which Usagi finally tells Rei that Mamoru hasn't replied to her is heartbreaking. Rei almost seems [[AngerBornOfWorry upset with Usagi]] for keeping it all bottled up.
** The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xRRIDABnCM actual death scene of the inner senshi]] is one of the most devastating moments in animation history. As they lay dying, Mercury, Venus and Jupiter just beg of the Starlights to protect Princess Serenity and that they took the hit to protect the Starlights as, despite the sometimes adversial relationship, the inner senshi loved them too and considered them friends regardless. Mars gives a final stirring speech to their leader and apologising for no longer being able to protect her, before fading into nothing while Usagi is cradling her. Kotono Mitsuishi's final scream is nothing short of heartbreaking.
** Usagi's broken attempt to catch the final bit of light that was once Rei, only to have it dissipate in her hand.
--->'''Usagi''': GIVE THEM BACK! ''GIVE REI-CHAN BACK TO ME!''
** Extra heartbreaking as it comes shortly after Usagi's breakdown on the roof where she emotionally collapses from the weight of missing Mamoru. Poor Usagi!
* The deaths of both Aluminum Siren and Lead Crow in ''Stars''. The first one has Galaxia coldly executing Siren via taking away her bracelets as she screams for mercy and dissolves in the clearly appalled Crow's arms. The second gives us Crow softly apologizing to Siren's memory before she's absorbed into a black hole.
** The real kicker with Siren's death is the whole time she's screaming and struggling with her bracelets, Lead Crow is ''holding onto her arms'' as though futilely trying to keep her bracelets in place, all the while begging Galaxia for mercy.
** The episode after Siren's death is a real kick, considering the dynamic between her and Crow - although Crow and Siren had spent their time together saying that they were rivals, it was always with an [[VitriolicBestBuds undercurrent of affection,]] with no actual bite. Tin Nyanko, who shows nothing but disdain and dismissal of Siren's memory afterwards, seems to expect that, because they'd called one another rivals, she and Crow will get along just great. Crow, however, isn't having that, being genuinely broken up over Siren's death, and seeing Nyanko as an intruder who doesn't deserve Siren's place.
*** Also, it's easy to see parallels to Aluminum Siren and Lead Crow to Usagi and Rei, which just makes their whole interactions carry that much more pain, as you can almost hear Usagi and Rei having every interaction they do.
* Anything related to Seiya's HopelessSuitor status. That includes the "Am I not good enough?" scene above, as well as "If only I'd have met you sooner." Note how in Episode 188, where everyone is forced to reveal their identities to each other, a bittersweet Starlights song with exactly that content starts playing in the background as if to emphasize that it just can't work anymore. And arguably, it may be even more sad that Seiya seems to take it all in [[StepfordSmiler good spirit]] rather than getting depressed.
** Shipping preferences nothing! Many prefer who prefered other pairings feel like the poor kid truly needed a hug.
** What adds an additional layer of tragedy is that Usagi can be interpreted as returning Seiya's feelings in some capacity, given her desperation to see him despite everyone else' forbidding each other to do and the depression that follows. Even still, she ultimately chooses to be with Mamoru in the end.
* Episode 192 has an idol competition, everybody is ready to see Minako take part in it... And ''that'' is when Minako chooses to remind everyone that [[MarriedToTheJob she'll put her duty as Sailor Venus above everything]], and has to be encouraged and almost ordered to take part and have some fun.
** Near the end Minako gets a letter announcing she passed the first phase... And she just puts it away, as she could become an idol whenever she wants but [[MarriedToTheJob right now, she has something else to do]].
** At the idol competition, Minako sung [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hp-LmGp4uA4 Route Venus]]. Just that.
* The ending theme, The Wind, the Sky, Surely..., tells about a person remembering a loved one, the good times and bad, and how said loved one had to leave them. All the singer can do is hope that they and their loved one will meet again and that the wind and sky will take their sadness away.

* There's a scene in the [=SuperS=] movie where Chibi-Usa has been captured by the villain and placed on a slowly ascending gondola. The senshi can't save her and can only watch as Chibi-Usa is carried away. The tearjerker comes when you see Sailor Moon's face. She is clearly horrified and trying her hardest (and failing) not to cry.
** Highlighted (at least in the English version) by Chibi-Usa's desperate cry of "Mom!", one of the few times where she acknowledges Usagi as such.
* "My Only Love" from the English soundtrack, especially when it played in the English version.
** In fact, most people who favor the uncut Japanese version of ''Anime/SailorMoon'' over the edited, American version from Creator/DiC (and later Cloverway) do admit that "My Only Love" (from the episode where Darien is revealed to be Tuxedo Mask and Sailor Moon is revealed to be the Moon Princess) is a better song to play over the last part of the episode than what the Japanese version had (though the Japanese version is heartbreaking in its own right).
** In the Latin-American dub, a Spanish-translated version of the Japanese song was used. It was very extremely sad too.
* The S movie was so-so, but the scene where Luna explains to Usagi how she feels about Kakeru and ends up crying in an also sobbing Usagi's arms? Holy shit, that was so sad.
-->"If I could be at his side as a human... I would at least be able to tell him how I feel!"
* Fiore, the R movie's antagonist, is an absolute WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds. He shares a design with the Makaiju aliens, implying that he's one of them, somehow separated and left to wander the stars as a child. He lands on Earth and forms a friendship with a young Mamoru, but can't survive long on Earth. Mamoru gives him a rose, and he promises that he'll return one day, having found a flower to symbolize their friendship (and it's very easy to read his feelings for Mamoru as romantic, which [[UnluckyChildhoodFriend only adds to the pain]]). He's corrupted by the Kisenian flower, an alien life form that corrupts life and destroys worlds. Poor guy never stood a chance - talk about fertile ground for Kisenian.
** At one point, Fiore is in full VillainousBreakdown as he stands over Sailor Moon and shouts to the Senshi about how they don't know what he's been through, the loneliness, the pain, the longing for someone, to not be alone. Each of them flashes back to who they were before they found Usagi, showing that they absolutely understand.
* Minako's R image song, "Setsunakute Ii" or "I'll Stand Alone", which is about her letting go of a lost love because it is her duty to do so, and her determination to hide her pain and from everyone.
** Route Venus explores the StepfordSmiler mindset of Minako Aino, with exuberantly cheery-sounding music played over lyrics that detail how Minako is in pain and fear from having to let go of her old, stress-free life free to be a lone-standing Senshi.
* Pretty much any scene involving Usagi screaming in physical or emotional pain, thanks to Creator/KotonoMitsuishi's uncanny ability to make it sound as though her heart has been ripped out of her chest and spat on.
* The backstory deaths of both of Makoto's parents in a plane crash goes from vaguely sad to absolutely gutwrenching when you take cultural context into account and realize that Naoko Takeuchi very likely had in mind the real-life crash of [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan_Airlines_Flight_123 Japanese Airlines Flight 123]] on its flight from Tokyo to Osaka during the Obon holiday - the greatest single-airplane related tragedy in history, which is still brought up in Japan every year on the anniversary of the crash. The [=JAL123=] crash occurred in 1985, when Makoto would have been seven years old; there were only four survivors, including two young girls. Worse yet, Mako's panic reaction to even hearing the sound of a plane engine suggests that she was ''on the plane'' with her parents, meaning that little Mako would have experienced both the half-hour struggle for the plane to stay aloft after a massive explosion depressurized the cabin, and the long wait between the plane's crash into the mountains at 7 pm until JSDF rescue teams finally showed up at the crash site the following morning.
* Any time [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uS__ovTY2AI "Protect The Stars"]] starts playing.
** Or whenever the second half of [[https://youtu.be/iquOMK4FOk4?t=109 "Itsuka, Sonna Watashi-tachi ni Naritakute"]] is played.

* Mamoru actually dies in the first arc. Sailor Moon has nightmares about his face melting. When she has to kill him again, she stabs herself, as she did in her past life. The Senshi decide to sacrifice their pens and their lives to resurrect Usagi. When she wakes up, she is horrified to find them dead. When Usagi gets a chance to use the Crystal to revive the Moon Kingdom, she uses it to revive her friends instead, and resume her ordinary life.
* Chibi-Usa returns with Moon, Venus, and Tuxedo Kamen to Crystal Tokyo. She sees her father and runs to him joyfully; then she passes through him when trying to give him a hug. He's only a hologram because his body is in a coma from the injuries sustained during the battle.
* All the Senshi, except Venus and Moon, are captured by the Black Moon. Sailor Moon is worried sick about them, and then Demande captures her as well in the BadFuture, which sends Venus into HeroicBSOD. She wakes up and finds out they're trapped on the Black Moon, in a chamber filled with dead bodies.
* One from the R manga/Crystal: Sailor Pluto's HeroicSacrifice, when she stops time ''knowing'' it'll kill her so she can stop Demande from destroying the universe. Especially when it undoes Chibi-Usa/Black Lady's brainwashing, lets her morph into Sailor Chibi Moon, and then the poor little girl sees Pluto's dead body and '''bawls'''. She says something to the extent of: "Pluto! Look at me, please! Open your eyes! I wanted you to see me as a Sailor Senshi! I want you to see I've grown! PLUTO, PLEASE, WAKE UP! NOOOOOOOOOOO!".
** The scene is pretty much repeated the same way in the ''Theatre/SeraMyu'' (Specifically the Black Lady Musicals.) The other Outer Senshi (Who are from Crystal Tokyo like Pluto in this version) try to soften the blow by telling her she's just resting. The fact Chibi-Usa and Black Lady have a duet shortly after Pluto dies that is just as sad makes the scene worse.
* Toward the end of the manga, when Usagi introduces Artemis and Diana to her mother, and tells her to take care of them before she goes off to fight Galaxia. Ikuko stares in fear as she tells Kenji she gets the feeling she's never going to see Usagi again, while Luna, Artemis, and Diana who are unable to talk due to damage to their crescent moons mew pitifully as they ''know'' Usagi's walking to her doom.
* Galaxia's RedemptionEqualsDeath in the manga. Despite how horribly evil she'd been, it's a surprisingly sad scene.
-->'''Sailor Galaxia:''' Sailor Moon... the star that I finally found. So big and beautiful, but never mine to have. But your star will always shine in this galaxy.
* Sailor Moon is urged to destroy the cauldron from which Chaos arises. If she does, she'll obliterate it and prevent future villains from arising. But, as she realizes, it will also destroy life. Instead, she decides to TakeAThirdOption and sacrifice herself to the Cauldron, purifying it. Fortunately, this leads to her, the Senshi and Tuxedo Kamen regenerating and being able to resume their lives. For the Sailor Quartet, however, as they watch they are horrified that Usagi died in front of them.
* In the Dream Arc, [[DudeWheresMyRespect Minako calling her teammates out on constantly calling for the Outers and completely forgetting of everything she did]]-before jumping into danger while still BroughtDownToNormal just to prove she still had it.
** Her friends shocked reactions, as [[StepfordSmiler Minako's awesome ability to hide her pain]] meant that they had ''no idea'' their friend [[BrokenAce had serious emotional and self-esteem issues in spite of her larger-than-life abilities and persona]], problems that were being made worse by [[BroughtDownToNormal her power loss persisting even after they had already recovered their powers]] (something else they didn't know: they were convinced Minako had either already recovered her powers so fast it wasn't even worth mentioning or hadn't lost them at all) [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness until she suddenly shouted at them out of nowhere]]. Especially because they were continuously mentioning the Outers because, with what they knew, calling for reinforcements was the sensible decision because they didn't think ''they'' were good enough to back her up... But when they simply suggested it Minako refused for no apparent reason.
* The very end of the Stars Arc: Even though Usagi was able to purify the Galaxy Cauldron with her sacrifice, being rewarded with her and her loved ones being resurrected, is set to become Queen of Crystal Tokyo, marries Mamoru and is pregnant with Chibi-Usa..Mamoru realizes that the events proved that only Usagi herself is truly immortal, and she’s destined to outlive all of them. This, combined with the warning that Chaos may return one day and she ended up as Sailor Cosmos and fighting an undefeatable Sailor Chaos in one timeline, adds a somber note to the otherwise happy ending that Usagi still may end up being fighting evil by herself in the far future, with the only consolation being that future is only a possibility.
