This spin-off is no stranger to breaking the readers' hearts and making them cry like a little girl, similar to Kazumi in the page image.
----
* The background of Airi and Yuuri in Chapter 5, with the latter using her wish to cure the former and turning into a Witch when using too much magic. Bonus points for her Witch's runes spelling out her thoughts.
--> Yuuri: "Airi, I'm sorry I couldn't keep our promise."
* Yuuri-Airi's Witch gets killed off by the Pleiades Saints, to the point that even Nico or Saki are about to cry or are already shedding tears, like Satomi.
** Becomes even harsher when Chapter 13 reveals that the Pleiades had to kill Michiru's Witch, too. The Saints already were near tears when fighting a sympathetic villain, one can only imagine the anguish they went through having to fight and kill not only one of their best friends, but also the one that had saved their lives previously.
* Kazumi eating Tachibana's parfait and bursting into tears at how delicious it is, and how Yuuri and Airi never got a chance to eat it as they had promised each other.
* Chapter 10 revolves around the backgrounds of the Pleiades Saints, opening up with them about to commit group suicide because of the influence of a Witch's Kiss, and showing what drove them to their despair.
** Umika's first novel was plagiarized and released behind her back under someone else's name, and the editor wanted her to continue writing for them.
** Kaoru was injured in a soccer match and hospitalized, but she saw the girl that had caused the injury being brought into the hospital after having attempted to commit suicide because she had been severely bullied for injuring Kaoru.
** Satomi's cat ends up dead, with the vet telling Satomi that she could have saved her pet, had she brought her in earlier. Satomi chastises herself for not finding her cat's OOCIsSeriousBusiness unusual behavior grounds to take her to the vet. Especially since Satomi has wanted to become a veterinarian.
** Mirai was bullied and mocked by her classmates for Bokukko using the Boku pronoun, leaving her friendless and lonely.
** Saki had a close relationship with her younger sister Miyuki, who died in a car accident the two got into.
** Niko and her friends were playing cowboys with a real, loaded gun and it went off during a playful struggle. The bullet plinked off of an iron vase and went through her two friends, before hitting Niko in the shoulder. Her friends died. And all of them were between the ages of three and four.
* A positive tearjerker is Michiru's background and her wish. Michiru was rushing to her ailing grandmother's side, only for her to have already fallen into a coma and unlikely to live without life-sustaining machinery for long, which Michiru knew her grandmother would not agree to. She wishes to Kyubey that her grandmother open her eyes again, so that the two of them could spend the rest of her normal lifespan together. Michiru even admits that she'd like to cure her grandmother with her wish, but knows it would go against her grandmother's way of life. The two of them spend one last day together, with her grandmother teaching Michiru how to make strawberry risotto and how important it is to keep on living. Michiru's grandmother dies the next day.
* Chapter 13 is the first major WhamEpisode the manga hits the reader with, revealing that Michiru actually turned into a Witch some time ago and was killed by the Saints, who became broken from her death and the reveal that magical girls turn into Witches. And that they created clones of her to bring Michiru back to life, with the protagonist Kazumi already being the thirteenth clone.
* Chapter 14 expands on Michiru's death and the Saints cloning her repeatedly.
** What was supposed to be a day of celebration, with Umika's first novel being released, turns into a tragedy when Michiru succumbs to her despair -- having learned that magical girls turn into Witches and realizing that she has doomed her friends to a horrible fate -- and turns into a Witch, revealing said fate to them.
** Satomi almost gleefully tells all of this to Kazumi, and then uses her Phantasma Bisbiglio powers to control Kazumi to have her attack the other Kazumi clones, who all have varying degrees of body horror and bloodthirst. And when only Kazumi and one clone remain, Satomi stabs Kazumi and the clone.
** There are panels showing Niko and Mirai listening in on the whole ordeal, but neither of them rushing to Kazumi's aid. Clearly, they think of Kazumi as disposible as Satomi does.
* Chapter 18 is another major WhamEpisode, with the reader left reeling from the first revelation to jumping right into the next one.
** Saki ends up turning into a Witch, courtesy of fellow Pleiades Saints member Niko. And not only does Mirai hold onto Saki, even as her Soul Gem bursts into a Grief Seed, she also looks at Saki's Witch and smiles before her head gets chomped off.
---> Mirai: Saki... I love you...
** While that's going on, Niko reveals herself to actually be a clone and has been with the Saints for a while now, having stepped in when the real Niko turned into a Witch and was killed. This Niko -- who bears Niko's original name of Hijiri Kanna -- was created by the Saints' Niko when she made a wish to Kyubey. She wished for a clone to be made that had no memory of the shooting incident, so that Niko could observe from afar and see how wonderful her life would have been like without it.
** The fact that Niko was so distraught over the incident that she became stoic, begging for redemption, and finally coping by inventing an imaginary version of herself that didn't have said incident, and what her life would have been like. And then using Kyubey to make said imaginary version real.
* Saki's Witch seems to react to the sound of Kazumi's bell earrings and starts to aggravate the other Witches in the room. She lets herself get killed by them, so that her Grief Seed drops and can be used to purify Kazumi before she turns into a Witch.
* Chapter 20 showing that the Pleiades Saints were looking forward to 'Kazumi', specifically mentioned to be a clone that doesn't have Michiru's memories and being a blank slate of a person, and thinking they had succeeded -- until the Evil Nuts and Satomi's worry horrifies them that Kazumi may be just as unstable as the other clones, leading to them having to make a SadisticChoice: kill Kazumi or let a potentially-unstable Witch-power-enhanced creature roam around and likely harm innocent people.
* Chapter 21 ends with Kazumi having defeated the Witch form of Ayase and Luca Souju, but it not dropping a Grief Seed. She holds onto Umika's and Kaoru's hands as their Soul Gems become darker and darker.
