You wouldn't expect a show where a group of adorable high schoolers play music and eat cake to make you cry, but ''K-On!'' manages to find a way.
----
* You can't help but feel bad for Mio whenever her insecurities and shyness act up, especially if you happen to have social anxiety.
** Particularly her "training" during the Romeo and Juliet arc. In real life, pushing someone with social anxiety to try and perform like that would be very likely to trigger a panic attack.
** During their first training camp, the group listens to a tape recorded by the previous members of the light-music club. When it switches over to Side B, it plays a voice clip (later revealed to be from Sawako) that leaves Mio cowering in fear. Ritsu, as usual, continues to frighten her which results in Mio utterly breaking down before ending up in a TroubledFetalPosition and sobbing. It's really saying something when even before Yui and Mugi point it out, Ritsu realized she took it too far.
** Likewise, upon realizing she has to sing at the school festival (after initially backing out due to being terrified of "singing such embarrassing lyrics" despite having written them) due to Yui frying her voice, Mio outright passes out. The day of the festival isn't much better as on top of getting scared by Mugi in a ghost costume, upon seeing the stage outfits Sawako made for the band, she starts to ''hyperventilate''. And at the performance itself, she trips over a cable and ends up in a position that exposes her panties to the audience. Mio is then heard screaming in absolute horror. In the aftermath of it all, poor Mio is reduced to huddling in a corner out of embarrassment. Someone give this girl a hug!
** Another case is when during the Christmas party at Yui's house, Sawako forces Yui to wear a SexySantaDress as punishment for bringing up her ex-boyfriend. However, [[InnocentFanserviceGirl Yui ends up posing proudly in it]]. Naturally, she makes Mio wear it, right down with ''forcefully undressing her, effectively '''molesting her'''''. Even worse, Nodoka shows up right when Sawako removes Mio's pants. Mio is then shown sobbing about how [[DefiledForever "no one will ever marry her now"]].
* When Azusa breaks down and cries in episode 9.
* When Ui realizes that Yui won't be home for a couple of days (as she and the other seniors are on their school trip to Kyoto), she is shown trying and failing to hold back from crying, to the point that Azusa and Jun suggest they stay over at her house in an attempt to cheer her up.
* The end of episode 20 of the second season. The girls just sit under the windows of their club room late in the day after their ''last'' live performance, and acknowledge they will no longer be a band after they graduate. Any form of sadness that the second season held behind a dam underneath the cheery, cute, colorful exterior comes falling down. The impact of this scene loses weight when all four seniors later pass the entrance exams so they go to the same university together, but it's still dramatic as they still have to leave their precious junior behind.
--->'''Yui:''' ...and our next senior festival will be even... better...
** Add to this that, during that scene, the BGM is [[DarkReprise a slower instrumental version of U & I]], something of a love song that they had just played as their final number.
* Episode 24 of the second season. Especially because of the lyrics of the song the club sings at the end.
** Azusa breaking down and begging her seniors not to graduate and leave her behind.
--> You don't have to clean the room...and I won't get mad even if you keep drinking tea all day...just please don't graduate...
** Especially the last two verses of "We Met a Wonderful Angel":
--> At the train station, on the path by the river, no matter how far we are, we can look up to the same sky and sing as one!
--> But you know, I met a wonderful angel. Graduation isn't the end, because we're best friends from now on.
--> If you say "I LOVE YOU!", we'll reply "WE REALLY REALLY LOVE YOU!!" We won't lose anything, forever and ever we'll always be together.
* The background song "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75aOBIm7K-A Ano Hi no Yume]]" is simply heartbreaking.
* The lyrics to U&I. It's obvious Yui is talking about her little sister Ui and how she doesn't know what to do without her. It's mostly cute and moe ("Where's the soy sauce and the sugar? Without you I can't do anything." etc.), but near the end of the song, it seems Yui has finally realized how important her little sister is to her, and how they won't be able to be together much longer:
--> I'm so sorry. I only now just realized, I've been taking you for granted. So, to start with, I have to tell you, thank you so much!
