''VideoGame/GuiltyGear'' has a very [[DarkandTroubledPast dark backstory]] filled with deep pain and tragedy. From horrible misunderstandings, to forces outside of its characters' control, to people just plain being evil and acting akin to the monsters they grew to hate so much. It's easy to see what the world of ''Franchise/BlazBlue'' was based on.

[[folder:Character and Background Lore]]
* The series is set AfterTheEnd, when a cataclysmic event rendered all technology useless in the year 2000. Humanity was effectively sent back centuries, until a group of sages revealed the existence of magic, a limitless and environmentally-friendly energy source. Mankind would proceed to use this newfound power as you would expect: to try and continue the status quo and pick up where they left off. Human greed and lust for power would eventually result in the creation of a new type of weapon. Combining science, magic, technology, and even nature itself, the terrifying creatures called Gears were born, used as tools of war and effectively replacing the threat of nuclear weapons. The Gears, however, would eventually rebel and thrust the world into a '''100-year long war''' that would bring it to the brink of destruction again.
* Sol Badguy was once known as Frederick Bulsara, a rough-around-the-edges scientist working alongside his two colleagues on what would eventually become the Gear Project. His life changed completely when out of left field one of his friends, who would eventually become known as the world's greatest war criminal known only as "That Man", seemingly betrayed him by injecting him with Gear cells and leaving him to mutate. On that day, Frederick effectively died, and Sol Badguy, the Guilty Gear, was born. Now a nigh-immortal being of unimaginable power, he spent the next 100 years killing the Gears to atone for his part in creating such weapons of mass destruction in the first place. He wearily wandered across battlefields as the world was turned into a living hellscape by the Gear Crusades, even ending up in the Sacred Order of Holy Knights for a time. After over a century conducting his private war against his own kind, he was finally able to seal away their commander, Justice. But despite this, his victory did nothing to sate an entire century of pain, and so he continued onward feeling it was the only thing left to him.
* Ky Kiske was born into a world ravaged by the Crusades, on the brink of destruction. He lost his entire family when he was very young and was forced to fend for himself. Eventually, he survived long enough to join the Sacred Order of Holy Knights, one of the last remaining defenses of humanity against the Gears, and he worked his way up to become one of their most prodigal soldiers. His experiences, however, had convinced him that the Gears couldn't be anything other than evil, and that destroying them was righteous justice. This dangerously-warped mindset, combined with his natural affinity for combat, made him a brutally efficient killing machine by his early teens despite his latent desire to do right by the world. His commitment to his ideals drove him and Sol to a rivalry that would shape both of their destinies.
* May, albeit unbeknownst to her or the audience at the time, is one of the last surviving members of the Japanese ethnicity, orphaned during the Crusades. Due to the latent ability of the Japanese to manipulate ki, this grants her untapped potential and near-superhuman capabilities, but it's also resulted in her feeling ostracized, especially when others point out her ethnic background to her, especially when those who point it out often don't have the nicest of intentions (I-No, Robo-Ky). It takes May several games and encounters with fellow Japanese Anji and Baiken, as well as Japanese culture enthusiasts like Chipp, to finally come to terms with and accept that her race doesn't define who she is as a person, and that it's ultimately her love for Johnny and her new family in the Jellyfish Pirates that matters most to her.
* Millia Rage was orphaned during the Crusades at a young age, and she eventually ended up in the hands of the Assassins' Guild, an organization of killers for hire. She caught the eye of the group's leader, Zato-1, and the two soon began a relationship. Then the events of the ''Night of Knives'' drama CD occur, in which her and Zato's mission is to murder the infant heir to a country's ruling body. Millia is both shocked and appalled by this, but ''not'' Zato, and no matter how much she tried to talk him out of it, Zato's twisted ambitions and commitment to the Guild's rules took precedence over his love for Millia. And so, Millia chose to run away from the Guild, and turned Zato in to the authorities, and she ended up on the run from both them and the Guild, for her betrayal had only caused Zato to slip further and further into insanity. Things finally came to a head when she had one final confrontation with Zato, whose mind had already been eroded to virtually nothing by his own power at that point, and killed him. Her lingering feelings about her relationship with Zato haunted her for several games afterward until ''Xrd'', when Zato was resurrected, and even after that she's still not quite at ease.
* Zato-1 had to work his way up from nothing in the harsh environment of the Assassins' Guild, eventually leading him to crave power. When he finally became its leader, he began to stray from the Guild's original intended purpose in order to sate his ambitions. His sole redeeming actions at the time were to take Millia and Venom under his wing, but they too were not significant enough within his mind to rein in his lust for power, and after Millia's betrayal Zato gained an unhealthy, insane obsession with killing her. His ever-growing insanity is played incredibly tragically, as the forbidden beast that lives within him, Eddie, is causing that madness to spiral out of control in an attempt to take over his body. By the time Zato is aware of what's happening, it's too late, and Eddie already has significant control over him. His last days in ''X'' are spent in a demented haze, half-lucid and half under Eddie's near-complete control, and his final moments are spent in a berserk fury trying to kill Millia, no longer aware of anything at all except for her, until the moment she finally puts him out of his misery.

[[folder:Guilty Gear: The Missing Link]]
* Sol's ending in the first game. This is the moment that establishes Sol's characterization as a ByronicHero, and kickstarts the plot of the series. A mortally-wounded Justice furiously demands to know why Sol, a Gear, is immune to her mind control abilities as a Commander Gear. Sol reveals he is the Prototype Gear, and Justice's last words are her realizing that Sol is the man she once knew as Frederick, and wishing that she, him, and That Man could be together again . With those words, a shocking and tragic revelation dawns upon Sol - Justice might somehow be Aria, his former lover, and he has just killed her, losing her for a second time.[[note]]Note that the original [=PS1=] release is a ''lot'' more vague on all this, invoking no names, and had people speculating as to the relationship between Sol, Justice, and That Man for the better part of fifteen years. It was ''Xrd'' that clarified a number of points, though the Accent Core version filled in one or two details.[[/note]] Enraged, Sol swears to find That Man and beat some answers out of him.
--> ''Sol, the Guilty Gear, stared at his bloodstained hands and prayed... prayed for the soul of the grotesque sacrifice lying at his feet.''
** Ever thought this could be any sadder? Justice's story mode ending in Accent Core Plus is this exact scene, same lines of dialogue and all, but now with voice acting.
* Ky's ending, which was later partially canonized as being part of the main storyline. In the game, Ky defeats Justice and starts preaching that he's in the right for stopping her, but the Commander Gear quickly puts him in his place by questioning what he's really fighting for. Ky replies that he truly believes that Gears are evil, and that slaying them is true justice. Justice throws his ideology right back in his face by saying she is only fighting against humanity because [[GoneHorriblyRight that's what she and her kind were made for]]. Ky is legitimately shocked to learn firsthand that HumansAreTheRealMonsters, and for the first time in his life is forced to confront the fact that his way of thinking might be wrong, that his ideals almost led him into being nothing more than a murderer. As Justice dies, she clues him in on the existence of That Man and can only wonder what Ky will think then when they finally meet. By this point, Ky seems almost desperate to be told the truth and be led in the right direction, screaming at Justice to stay alive so he can question her further to no avail. By the end of it all, Ky just looks ''completely lost''. All he can do is desperately ask God if he was doing the right thing.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Guilty Gear XX: The Midnight Carnival (and revisions)]]
* Eddie's storyline. The good news: Eddie now has full control of Zato's body! The bad news: Zato was killed by Millia in ''X'', and his body is starting to decay, meaning Eddie will need a new host at some point. Though he spends the majority of ''XX'' drunk on his own power and overconfidence, ''Accent Core'' reveals there's worse news: Forbidden Beasts are parasites with limited lifespans that feed off the life force of their hosts, and because Zato is dead that means Eddie will die too. What follows is Eddie undergoing the FiveStagesOfGrief before meeting his ultimate fate. ''XX'' was his period of denial, but in ''AC'' denial gives way to anger as all the confidence he had from being drunk with power immediately washes away as he starts growing more and more desperate to find a new host and starts acting more like a crazed animal. Eventually he enters bargaining, trying to find powerful bodies such as Gears to inhabit and then encountering Slayer who bluntly tells him that no one can escape death, at which point Eddie gives in to his own insanity and panic, convincing himself there just ''has'' to be a way he can keep living. Finally, at his absolute lowest point, he goes into a deep depression before fighting Millia one last time, angrily screaming and lashing out at the world that created him for being cursed to die without a host. It's only at the end that he finally accepts his death with grace, finally understanding what Slayer had tried to tell him: what matters isn't how long what lives, but the memory they leave behind. His last act before he dies is simply to ask Millia to remember that he existed, as much as she remembers Zato's love for her.

[[folder:Guilty Gear 2: Overture (and Short Stories)]]
* Ky's story post ''Accent Core'' as narrated by the short stories. He and Dizzy were living happily and expecting their first child, until the Conclave summoned him and practically "volunteered" him to be their puppet king of Illyria. When he declined, they told how they ''know about Dizzy.'' In Sol's story, Ky was even described as someone who looked really unhealthy and stressed. When Sol was beating Ky after a heated meeting, Ky and Dizzy's toddler son, Sin (the cause of said beating; bringing the kid into the world just made the lives of Sol '''and''' Ky harder as far as the bounty hunter was concerned), pleads with Sol to stop hurting his dad, since he knows Dizzy cries when such things happen; Ky cries at the scene, and Sol couldn't bring himself to continue. Later on, Ky and Dizzy lets go of their beloved child and entrusts him to [[ParentalSubstitute Sol]] for his own safety.
* The scene where Sol is inside Valentine's fortress. Imagine killing the remnants of your dead girlfriend all the while hearing her voice around you- angry, happy, crying or saying ''I love you.'' Once Sol defeats her, they call each other by their real names.
--> '''Valentine''': ''It's okay, Frederick...'' (''Valentine fades away'')
--> '''Sol''': ''[[WhamLine Aria?!]]'' (''left alone in the dimension'')
** What's worse, right before That Man [[VillainousRescue sends Sol out of the now-sealed off Backyard]], Sol's conversation with That Man has the latter allude to Justice's death at Sol's hands back in the first game. Therefore, Sol's lot in life is such: Your lover is converted into what is intended to be the next step in human evolution (heavily implied to be a unwitting conversion at that) but loses her memories in the process and is subsequently horrified by the evils mankind is capable of, turning against her creators and causing 100+ years of genocide in which Japan is all but wiped off of the map. And who has to put her down? You do, using the powers you gained from also being converted against your will. Five years later, you have to do the same to her pitiable clone, who spends most of the game acting like a dutiful child running errands for her "Mother" and later breaks down, going into a maddening rage once she fails at that task.
---> '''Sol''': ''Answer me one thing! Valentine... She looked as if she were a living copy of Aria...! No, she herself was Aria... Bastard, was that your doing too?'' \
'''That Man''': ''Not at all. But that girl... [[TheAtoner You and I both]]... [[CallBack already killed her.]]''
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Guilty Gear Xrd]]
* The heartwarming moment with Sin and Ramlethal when they look up at the night sky is interrupted by Bedman, who makes his entrance by killing the puppy Ramlethal was caring for, all to teach her the meaning of the word "replacement" and show her that she is unique. He creates a new puppy for Ramlethal, bearing the same likeness as the original, but unlike the first puppy it doesn't bite her. Ramlethal notices and points out that it's not the same as the one she grew to care for, nearly having a breakdown. Even Bedman himself is shaken at what he had to do.
* Both ending themes count as this when you factor FridgeBrilliance into the equation. Both songs are actually about Sol pining away for [[TheLostLenore Aria]] and lamenting about how he could [[YouCantGoHomeAgain no longer bring back the past]]. In fact the end theme for the console version, ''Icarus'', seems like just any generic sad song about shattered dreams and a lost love at first until you reach Story Mode and are treated to a flashback where Aria asks Sol if he ever wondered how it felt to be like a bird, and instead gets treated to a short debate between Frederick and That Man on the merits of idealism and romanticism vs. realism and stoicism. The man likely never got over how much of a hardcase he had been to a woman who was [[GenkiGirl simply trying to get him to open up and dream]], and is now merely living out his days filled with regret.
** Revelator's ending theme, Freesia, is even worse. Even though he knows full well that he's met a lot of people who do care for him over his 100+-year-long life, Sol still isn't willing to open up, and still feels absolutely miserable without Aria. The fact that this ending theme can happen right after his ending, where Jack-O' reveals that she, for all intents and purposes, IS Aria, truly maximizes the heart-wrenching factor of the song. And then it goes beyond even that when, thanks to revelations later on in the story, the song can also apply to Aria herself. She isn't willing to merge with Jack-O' and come back to life because of her regret over what the Universal Will made her do as Justice.
** Going further back, ''Lily'' is just as sad as the other ending songs. Despite the soft, relatively upbeat tone of the song, the lyrics tell a much different story. It's about Sol being unable to let go of Aria's memory and being bitter and angry at the world for having moved on, becoming a much more chaotic place after the Universal Will destroyed all electronics in 1999 and only remembering the woman he loved in passing as Justice, an evil monster who nearly destroyed all of humanity just as the Universal Will attempted.
* The Kiske family reunion. Every moment of it. Dizzy is finally brought back after years of being sealed, and Sin finally calls Ky "Dad" for the first time.
* Three words: ''Ky getting shot''. One of the most powerful scenes in the entire story, even before TheReveal that he survives because he's now part-Gear.
* Elphelt's fate. After being stopped by Sol, she begins to disappear. Despite being shielded by Absolute Defense: Felion, Sol continues punching at it in order to jog her memory and bring the Elphelt that they all know back. After coming to her senses, she attempts to self-destruct as her last act of having free will, but is stopped by Ramlethal, who finally gains emotions and tells her to hold out hope that they will save her. With tears in her eyes, Elphelt ascends into the sky and vanishes, saying she will do her best.
* The flashback of the destruction of Japan. ''No one was happy''. The scientist who'd be known as That Man turned Aria into the Justice that destroyed Japan because of desperation that an unknown force is coming out from Japan and would wipe out humanity. We saw how That Man sounded full of anguish as he overrode the command for Justice to unleash the Gamma Ray on Japan, and in the end [[IDidWhatIHadToDo apologized for what he had to do.]] Compounding on this, Aria, internally, for all her later bluster as Justice was utterly devastated at the damage she caused.
** Not to mention it's where Baiken gets her StartOfDarkness from since ''The Missing Link''.
* Elphelt's Episode Mode story in ''Revelator''. Full stop. At first, it seems like she's forgotten everything and has returned to her original programming of finding true love, but being forbidden by the Universal Will to actually fall in love. In her sub-boss fight, it's revealed that all of her experinces from the 1st fight onwards have been a simulation. She is presented with a simulation of Sol that acts absolutely nothing like him, until Bedman decides he has had enough of Ariels' simulation and pleads with Elphelt in a heartfelt manner to not wake up from the dream-state she's in. Elphelt doesn't listen, and when she wakes up, '''she is inside of Justice, acting as her core'''.
* Axl's predicament in ''Revelator''. In his Arcade Mode story, he finds out that both he and I-no, who are time travelers, aren't even human. They're beings called "magical foci" which are formed in the Backyard from people's deepest desires, and have the ability to change the course of the future. Because of their immense, world-altering power, they are seen as "errors" by the Backyard. Jack-O' then reveals to him that he cannot go back to his own timeline, because that possibility no longer exists. The current world has rendered it impossible, and if he does decide to do something to change that, then the current world will be destroyed - erased from the flow of time and overwritten by Axl's decision. He spends the entirety of Story Mode in a deep depression, completely lost on what to do until the very end, where he chooses the current world over his dream of seeing his girlfriend Megumi again. He bursts into tears as he saves Sol.
* Ramlethal's DisneyDeath halfway through the story. She and Sin go off to investigate a town which they know is likely a trap. And they are right. A massive Gear spawns right on top of them and is about to self-destruct. Ram orders Sin to leave and she attempts to leave after him, only to find a defenseless girl which she grabs but then is stopped by one of [[BigBad Ariels's]] EliteMooks, so she instructs Lucifero to take the girl away. Because of this she is unable to outrun the explosion and is only able to give a [[WhenSheSmiles smile]] before the explosion overtakes her. What makes this worse is that this HeroicSacrifice was all in vain, the girl was just a clever illusion created by Ariels, who then mocks Elphelt for even having the idea that emotions makes them better people.
** Result: Ramlethal's presumed death leaves Sin ''[[OOCIsSeriousBusiness emotionally wrecked]]'', despite him hiding it later on. When the final battle begins, he ''loses it'' and [[GoodCannotComprehendEvil explodes in rage]] at Ariels for using her own daughters as tools.
* Also, the confrontation between Sol and That Man. Sol had his ''suspicions'' before, but he now has to confront the fact that he absolutely, positively did kill Aria when he took down Justice. It's actually Ky who helps him through it, and the ''scream'' of anguish can still be heard from outside the walls of the Illyrian Palace.
* As of ''Revelator'', '''Bedman's entire existence'''. He and his sister Delilah were born with a condition that caused their minds to accelerate and grow at a rapid pace, but this rendered their bodies ill and frail because they couldn't keep up with the speed at which their minds processed information. To save their lives, their parents had no other option but to put them both into a permanent coma. Their minds, however, had accelerated to the point where they could potentially kill people from the dream world, because the dream world is, in fact, the Backyard. The Universal Will found him and lured him into becoming her pawn in exchange for letting him into the Absolute World once it came to be, and he was tricked into believing that the "Absolute World" meant that he could see his sister again, bring back everyone he had slain and be able to leave a lasting mark on reality without the need for killing. Ariels used him as her personal assassin, but he continued rolling with it because the ends justified his means, hiding his fears behind a mask of smug, aloof superiority. His entire motivations are then shattered by Robo-Ky, and he is utterly wiped out by Venom. He declares his intentions to use his remaining life to tend to the victims, but Ariels reveals her deception in a sickeningly cruel fashion, and tells him that the Absolute World is one in which all of humanity (likely including Bedman and Delilah) is destroyed and replaced with her "perfect humans". Bedman flies into a rage at his betrayal as the weight of his sins finally cracks him, and defiantly but futilely tries to defeat Ariels. He then dies by [[TakenForGranite turning into stone]] and crumbling away, regretfully crying that he has to atone.
** A later scene shows a character only shown from the legs down standing over the remains of Bedman's body before teleporting away. The character's legs have the same markings as Bedman's, heavily implying that they're his thought-dead sister Delilah, finally awake just in time to discover her brother's ''crumbled remains''.
** Bedman's story hurts even more after ''-Strive-'''s ending, since he's now one of the few playable characters to ''never get a happy ending''. Sol becomes human again and settles down with Jack-O', Baiken stops pursuing revenge, and even ''Faust'' is able to die in peace and redeem himself in his eyes, but Bedman gets nothing. Happy Chaos does imply that he [[AscendedToAHigherPlaneOfExistence managed to become an inter-dimensional being]] through the Backyard, but given [[WhoWantsToLiveForever what tends to happen to godlike or immortal beings]] in ''Guilty Gear'', that probably hasn't made him feel any better.
* Jack-O', once finally ready to merge with Justice and resurrect Aria, finds herself unable to do so. Why? Because the parts of Aria still in Justice have been tormented by the [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone memories of the atrocities she unwillingly committed]] during the Crusades. Aria's guilt is making her reject the merger. And there's no guarantee she won't remember it once she's properly resurrected either.
* While some of the reactions to Bedman's Instant Kill are [[Funny/GuiltyGear hilarious]] or [[NightmareFuel/GuiltyGear horrible]], some definitely fit here too.
-->'''Johnny''': "[[DisappearedDad Pops...]] [[PleaseWakeUp Wake up... it's still the afternoon...]]"\
'''Elphelt''': "No, [[AbusiveParents Mother]], please! Stop! I-I can't...!"\
'''Faust''': "[[ThisCannotBe T-that can't be happening!]] The patient was just stable!"\
'''Faust''': "[[StartOfDarkness I'MSORRYI'MSORRYI'MSORRYI'MSORRYI'MSORRYI'MSORRYI'MSOSORRYYYYYYYYYY!!!]]"\
'''Millia:''' "S-should I... [[DrivenTosuicide destroy myself]] instead?"\
'''Leo:''' [[DiedInYourArmsTonight Don't you die on me]], [[ThatsAnOrder that's an order!]]\
'''Raven:''' "[[GoMadFromTheIsolation No one... no one can recognize me!]]"\
'''Raven:''' "[[WhoWantsToLiveForever Even death is a luxury I do not have!]]"\
'''I-No:''' "[[TheDarkSideWillMakeYouForget Am I supposed to see something...?]]"\
'''Sin''': "Wait, what're you...? No! Mom!"\
'''Baiken:''' "I remember that face! [[DarkAndTroubledPast I REMEMBER!!]]"
* TheStinger of ''Revelator''. That Man is finally unmasked as Asuka R. Kreutz, Sol's old [[VitriolicBestBuds Vitriolic Best Bud]] and partner in the Gear Project, and it seems like they have no reason to fight now that Aria's been saved... except they both know they're [[IveComeTooFar well beyond the point of talking it out]]. There's too much history for just words at this point. Even Sin notes the air of tragedy to the situation. Also, while Sol's words seem like he's finally eager to settle the score once and for all, his tone of voice is noticeably softer and calmer. Even though both men have finally come to terms now that the truth has been revealed, they've fully committed and accepted that this is simply the way it ''must'' be, without exception.
* When thinking of it, Raven's backstory is a mix of this and NightmareFuel. He's been alive for ''millennia'', and was an actual Crusader. When he failed a mission, his entire troop was killed and he himself was executed. While being executed his eyes beheld another dimension where [[CreepyCrows a murder of crows encircled and stared at him]], while the sensation of their stares [[CruelAndUnusualDeath mirrored his body being stabbed and mutilated by his executioners.]] He survived and [[DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife wandered the earth for 1000 years without a purpose]], [[GoMadFromTheIsolation eventually]] [[ImmortalityHurts going mad]] [[FromBadToWorse and]] [[BodyHorror driving a spike through his forehead]] [[DespairEventHorizon out of despair]]. ''[[FateWorseThanDeath How fucking SHATTERED must a person be after all of that?!]]''
** And then the After Story DLC added alongside the ''Rev 2'' update makes his backstory even sadder. After gaining his abilities, he began WalkingTheEarth helping people as a MessianicArchetype figure. His immortality and RealityWarper abilities were revered by all, and soon they began viewing him as a god. Unfortunately, because of that, the people he helped relied on him too heavily and as such were not willing to help themselves in his absence. They began blaming and eventually hating Raven for any misfortunes that occurred while he was away. That's when he realized, in his own words, that in the end he was nothing more than a "glorified repairman". Raven tells this to That Man, or rather Asuka R. Kreutz, as he's putting his plan to fight Sol into motion, admitting that he considers Asuka a true friend for being the one who gave him a reason to live after being lost in despair for so long.
* Jack'O, surprisingly, is the center of one in her Arcade Mode: when she and Raven are confronted by Sol, Ramlethal and Sin. After winning against Sol, she agrees to remove her mask and tell him who she is, and as she explains her origins as a Valentine and one of Aria's halves, she goes from her usual silly and child-like persona ''to her more serious and mature one, staying as such for the rest of the talk''}. Hell, Jack'O even apologizes to Sol because she cannot remember him clearly, then says that she still can feel some of Aria's emotions in her, telling her how important Sol was in her past life as such. Aside of being quite the WhamEpisode in the story, it's a huge SugarWiki/SheReallyCanAct moment for Creator/HiromiIgarashi, whose acting is ''perfect''.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Side Material ([=Drama CDs=], Comics, Manga, Material Collections)]]
* The drama CD that shows how Dizzy and Testament met is full of heartwarming moments. But more importantly, we see how Dizzy suffered prior to ''GGX''. One example of a TearJerker moment is when Dizzy meets a blind girl named Josephine who was lost in the forest (probably abandoned by her parents since nobody's looking for her.) When Dizzy comforts the girl, her wings are touched accidentally. After being called an angel, Dizzy sobs as she knows that she seen as demon by others and apologized to Josephine as she couldn't help her get her sight back.
-->'''Josephine:''' ''You must be an angel! After all you helped me! I go to church every day and pray... pray that I'll meet an angel, that one day I'll see again! Finally... God finally answered my prayers!''
-->'''Dizzy':''' ''I'm sorry... I... I can't do anything for your eyes...!''
** Later when Jose's life was endangered Dizzy used her power to save her. Jose, having her sight restored was so shocked to see Dizzy's real appearance and yelled at her, [[HorribleJudgeOfCharacter "Demon! Go back to the forest!"]] Later however, [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone Jose felt guilty and wanted to apologize.]]
** This even becomes more sad when you read the line that says he "is tortured the depth of his sins" in the past but found a new reason to live when he meets Dizzy. Yet eventually, the two separated their ways.
* ''Side Red'' has a very, very tragic end where a very young Ky dies horribly after [[LastStand fighting a horde of Gears alone]] [[AlwaysSaveTheGirl to save]] a woman named [[ManipulativeBitch I-No.]] Sol similarly hacks his way through but arrives too late. Ky struggles to breathe and talk and begged Sol to take his place as the next leader of the Holy Knights while Sol is beginning to cry. Ky drops dead and we hear Sol screaming his name. Later on, we see Sol honoring Ky's wishes when acts as the order's leader for the following years.
** This is even sadder when you consider that Sol and Ky are rivals and, even when there's peace, they're so different, they cannot get along. But this is maybe because Ky who's around 13-14 is seen as naive by a lazy, but more experienced Sol.
** And if you're wondering how this could get any sadder, Dizzy is also present in ''Side Red''. But this isn't the Dizzy you know. This is a Dizzy who's been totally broken by humanity's hostility towards Gears and has ended up just like her mother Justice, hating humans and wanting nothing more than to see them all dead just so that Gears can have a chance at existing. It's both chilling and heart-wrenching to hear that sweet girl acting the complete opposite of how she does in the main series. And with -REVELATOR- revealing that, yes, Sol is her father, it retroactively makes the Drama CD's ending even more tragic. Sol was forced to kill his lover Aria, and now ''he has to kill his own daughter''.
* As expected of drama [=CDs=] which are [[DarkerAndEdgier considerably darker]] than the already rather dark main games' storyline, we have another sad moment with Millia in the ''Night of Knives'' where she breaks down crying after learning that Zato agreed to [[MoralEventHorizon assassinate a 2-year old king]] to save her life. She is horrified to realize how much she misjudged Zato's true character.
--> '''''Millia''': Are you insane!? This is child abuse, no, INFANTICIDE! This isn't an assassination! This is infamy!''
** That's just the tip of the dysfunctional ice-burg, too. Zato, who obviously does love and care about Millia (albeit in an obsessive, creepy way), already sacrificed too many of the Guild's rules to get her back safely and therefore he won't take back the new mission in fear it'll make things even worse, even if it strains their relationship. Venom had already been told in so many words that Zato wouldn't have bothered saving anyone that wasn't Millia, making the fact that she started turning her back on Zato because of his plans to rescue her (something he never would have done for Venom) and wasn't thankful in the slightest infuriating and completely unreasonable. All three of them have legitimate reasons to be upset, and knowing this is essentially what puts the nail in the coffin of the trio's relationships to one another makes it even more depressing to sit and listen to.
