[[Creator/HirohikoAraki Araki]] has a marked affinity for non-Japanese music, particuarly classic rock and progressive rock. The sheer number of references in his work is baffling. This was a nightmare regarding translation, since most of the names were copyrighted, so they had to rename a lot.[[note]]And that's not counting years of the fans directly translating the names to the band names when the pronunciation was different, e.g. Wamuu rather than Wham! (Wamu!).[[/note]] And as it went on, a little pop group here, a little rapper there appeared, in addition to more contemporary bands. Other references to art, pop culture, and fashion are also abundant.

* The zombie that attacks Jonathan and his friends before meeting the monks is named [[Music/BryanAdams Mr. Adams]].

* One of Dio's minor zombie henchmen is named Doobie after the soft rock band Music/TheDoobieBrothers.
* '''[[Music/{{Styx}} Father Styx]]'''
* ''Manga/FistOfTheNorthStar'' references:
** After Dio has forcefully kissed Erina, he makes a familiar gesture, crossing his extended hands over his torso. It's the same gesture that Juda, the final villain from the Rei arc, does in his introduction.
** When Jonathan meets Dio at his castle, he boasts to have come from Hell to fight him, much like what Kenshiro shouted to Shin before their duel, and Jonathan points at Dio in the same way Kenshiro would point an opponent.
** In another Kenshiro-versus-Shin parallel, after Dio is defeated and falls off the tower, a boy asks why Jonathan couldn't truly hate Dio.
* Jonathan himself shares a name with another protagonist of a 19th century vampire novel, [[Literature/{{Dracula}} the one that started it all]].
** The alliteration in his name was inspired by that of Creator/StevenSpielberg.
* When meeting Speedwagon for the first time, Jonathan is wearing the stereotypical ''Franchise/SherlockHolmes'' outfit, an inverness cape and deerstalker hat.
* Speedwagon in his first appearance is revealed to have [[Literature/{{Goldfinger}} a deadly bowler hat]] [[Film/{{Goldfinger}} with a sharpened steel rim]].

* The Pillar Men are named '''[[Music/{{Santana}} Santana]], [[Music/{{ACDC}} Esidisi]], [[Music/{{Wham}} Wamuu]] and [[Music/TheCars Kars]]''', all of them after bands of similar names.
* '''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzie_Q Suzi Q]]'''.
** Suzie Q's name may also be a reference to [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzi_Quatro Suzi Quatro]].
* Lisa Lisa kills Wired Beck in classic ''Manga/FistOfTheNorthStar'' fashion -- complete with Joseph assuring Beck that "YouAreAlreadyDead."
** Along with keeping the one from above, the dub adds another one. In episode 23, before Kars kills three of his underlings, he says "As you can clearly see, they are already dead."
* During the flashback when Speedwagon's plane was hijacked, Joseph is reading ''Franchise/{{Superman}}''. In the anime, it is replaced by ''Manga/{{Baoh}}'', an earlier work of Araki's.
* The Pillar Men seek the Red Stone of [[Music/SteelyDan Aja]].
* The island where Joseph's training with Lisa Lisa and Caesar takes place, Air Supplena Island, is named after the band [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Supply Air Supply]].
* The song "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyxOXjZHl9U Propaganda]]" from the anime quotes ''Creator/FriedrichNietzsche'', more specifically ''Literature/AlsoSprachZarathustra''.
** Speaking of the OST, "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJaWiZbvfQs Welcome to the World]]" opens with a guitar riff too similar to "[[Music/NineOhOneTwoFive Owner of a Lonely Heart]]" for it to be unintentional. 55[[folder:''Stardust Crusaders'']]
* In the beginning, Holly was singing Little Eva's hit (rerecorded by many other artists from Music/GrandFunkRailroad to Music/KylieMinogue), "The Loco-Motion".
* All of the initial Stands are named after the [[TarotMotifs Major Arcana Tarot cards]]. Later, Egyptian God names are used, and when they ended, band names were the source.
* '''Jotaro Kujo'''[='=]s last name is a nod to the Creator/StephenKing novel ''Literature/{{Cujo}}''.
** When the crew registers in the hotel run by Enya, Jotaro registers under the alias "Qtaro Kujo", a reference to the children manga ''Manga/LittleGhostQTaro'' by Creator/FujikoFujio.
* '''Joseph Joestar'''[='=]s attire and tendency to use Hermit Purple as a whip are clear homages to ''Franchise/IndianaJones'', likely building off of him working alongside the Nazis in the previous part.
* '''Muhammad [[Music/PaulaAbdul Avdol]]'''
** One of his attacks with Magician's Red is called Crossfire Hurricane, after the first line from Music/{{The Rolling Stones|Band}}' "Jumpin' Jack Flash" ("I was born in a crossfire hurricane...")
* '''Noriaki Kakyoin''' gets his last name from the [[NoCommunitiesWereHarmed city of Kakyōin]] in Japan's Sendai ward.
* '''Jean-Pierre [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michel_Polnareff Polnareff]]'''
** Polnareff repeatedly saying [[GratuitousFrench "Non!"]] during his fight against Avdol might be a reference to the singer's first hit song "La Poupée Qui Fait Non" (''The doll who says no'').
** The character's sister is named Sherry, after the singer's song "Tout, Tout Pour Ma Chérie" (''everything for my darling''). The song isn't particularly popular in his home country of France, but [[GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff charted really high in Japan]] which explains a lot.
** Silver Chariot's helmet resembles ''Fist of the North Star''[='=]s Jagi.
** He does a ShoutOut to Literature/ThePrincessBride, more exactly towards Inigo Montoya. Although they look and act nothing alike, Polnareff and Montoya have oddly similar backstories, both being European fencers who lost a family member after they were killed by a man with a deformed hand. It's outright [[LampshadeHanging Lampshaded]] when he and Kakyoin are finally facing J. Geil and losing (badly). J.P. calmly explains to a desperate Kakyoin that, when the moment of revenge arrives, you don't just shout random insults. There's a certain code you have to follow, and there are some precise phrases that have to be spoken. [[MyNameIsInigoMontoya You know]] [[YouKilledMyFather how]] [[PrepareToDie it ends.]]
* '''Gray Fly''' is named after Music/TheEagles member, Glenn Frey.
** His Stand, Tower of Gray, which represents coming disaster, matches Gray's M.O. of assassination by [[MakeItLookLikeAnAccident causing fatal transportation accidents]].
** The Stand's extra mouth is inspired by that of the title creature in ''Film/{{Alien}}''.
* The false '''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_and_Tennille Captain Tenille]]''' whose stand is named '''[[Film/CreatureFromTheBlackLagoon Dark Blue Moon]]'''.
* '''Forever''' is named after the album ''[[Music/WuTangClan Wu-Tang]] Forever''. He uses a Stand called Strength.[[note]]''Stardust Crusaders'' predates both the formation of the Wu-Tang Clan and the release of Wu-Tang Forever. However, Araki didn't give Forever his name in the initial serialization of Stardust Crusaders but instead in an art book released in 2000.[[/note]]
** Strength was inspired by the famous ghost ship ''Mary Celeste'', while parts of its appearance (especially in the OVA) were influenced by the 1980 horror movie ''Film/DeathShip''.
* '''{{Music/Devo}} The Cursed'''. In the Viz translation, he's called [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soul_Sacrifice Soul Sacrifice]].
** The cursed murderous doll possessed by his Stand Ebony Devil is a ShoutOut to ''Film/ChildsPlay''.
* '''[[Music/TheBeatles Rubber Soul]]'''.
* '''Hol Horse''' is a corruption of "[[Music/DarylHallAndJohnOates Hall and Oates]]".
* '''[[Music/TheJGeilsBand J. Geil]]''', renamed '''[[Music/TheJGeilsBand Centerfold]]''' in the Viz translation.
* '''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nena Nena]]'''
* '''Music/{{ZZ|Top}}'''
** Wheel of Fortune was inspired by the films ''Film/{{Christine}}'' and ''Film/{{Duel}}''. It also resembles the car from the album artwork of ''Music/{{Eliminator|ZZTopAlbum}}'', which ties into ZZ's namesake.
* '''[[Music/{{Enya}} Enya]] the Hag'''.
* '''Music/SteelyDan''', the Viz translation changed his name to [[{{Franchise/Superman}} Dan of Steel]]
* '''Arabia Music/{{Fats|Domino}}'''
* '''Mannish Boy''' is named after a song by blues legend Music/MuddyWaters.
** Death Thirteen attacks people in dreams, reminiscent of [[Franchise/ANightmareOnElmStreet Freddy Krueger]].
** It also shouts "Lali-ho!" a few times, which is borrowed from VideoGame/DragonQuest.
* '''Music/{{Cameo}}'''
* '''[[Creator/BetteMidler Midler]]'''
* '''Music/{{Iggy|Pop}}''', who just so happens to have [[Music/TheIdiot the Fool]] as his Stand.
* '''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youssou_N%27Dour N'Doul]]'''
* '''[[Music/OingoBoingo Oingo & Boingo]]''', whose names are changed in the Viz translation to '''[[Music/ZenyattaMondatta Zenyatta and Mondatta]]'''
* '''Music/{{Mariah|Carey}}'''
* '''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alessi_Brothers Alessi]]'''
* Anubis' victims '''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaka_Khan Chaka and Khan]]'''. His original user was Caravan Serai, named for one of [[Music/CarlosSantana Santana]]'s albums.
* '''Music/{{Pet Shop|Boys}}'''
* '''Music/KennyG'''; gets renamed "[[Music/MichaelJackson Billie Jean]]" for the English releases.
* Brothers '''Daniel J.''' and '''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terence_Trent_D%27Arby Telence T. D'Arby]]'''
* '''Music/VanillaIce''', whose Stand is called Music/{{Cream}}. Doubles as a {{pun}}.
** His localized name, "Cool Ice", is a reference to the Vanilla Ice song [[Film/CoolAsIce and film]] of the same name.
* US Senator '''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilson_Phillips Wilson Phillips]]''', DIO's unwitting chauffeur
* Dio's name in Part III is shortened to just "DIO" and written in all caps as well and writing it consistently in English letters even in Japanese printings, changing the shoutout to Music/RonnieJamesDio's band, also named "DIO." His gained Stand is named The World, after the namesake tarot card.
** DIO hiding in Egypt is a reference to the DIO song ''[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_in_Line Egypt (The Chains are On)]]''.
** There's a subtle reference to the DIO song "Holy Diver" in the plot's setup. DIO spent the interim between Parts I and III -- a span of one hundred years -- in a coffin at the bottom of the ocean. In short, he was "down too long in the midnight sea". Another reference to "Holy Diver" can be deduced from the design of DIO's Stand, The World: A golden NefariousPharaoh (ancient pharaohs were considered divine at one point, thus "holy") with scuba diving bottles on his back (thus looking like a diver).
** DIO's debut album, "Holy Diver", was released in 1983. This is the same year when DIO's coffin was retrieved from the sea.
* In the manga version of the scene where Joseph uses Hermit Purple on a TV to get a message from randomized channels, ''Manga/{{Doraemon}}'' and ''Film/TheGodfather'' are among the shows displayed. The anime removes the references, but still shows a character asking where "Michael" is and adds a reference to ''Gorgeous Irene'', one of Araki's previous works. Also shown on the TV is an all-female talk show called ''[[Series/TheView The Vision]]'', complete with a host who looks like Creator/WhoopiGoldberg. Also in the manga the cover of Music/TomPetty's ''Full Moon Fever'' can be seen.
* When Joseph is revived via the blood from DIO's corpse after having his own blood drained, he tries to prank Jotaro by pretending to be possessed by DIO. He's spared from a vicious beating when he proves it's really him by remembering the name of the lead actress from ''Franchise/{{Tarzan}} the Ape Man'' (Creator/BoDerek) and the singer of the parody song "Eat It" (Music/WeirdAlYankovic - Yankovic himself even posted an excerpt of the scene [[https://www.instagram.com/p/4KYC8sGu_1/ on his Instagram account]]!)
* Episode 8 of the anime has cameos of [[Franchise/LupinIII Lupin and Jigen]] when the party enters the hotel.
* Joseph claims he knows how to ride a camel because he's seen ''Film/LawrenceOfArabia'' three times.
* When Kakyoin wakes up from his nightmare in Episode 19, Polnareff tells him he thrashing around and shaking the bed like that creepy girl from ''Film/TheExorcist''.
* During the gambling with the elder D'Arby, Joseph taunts him by intentionally mispronouncing his name. This is probably a reference to ''Film/TheSting'', in which a trickster character keeps saying a mafioso's name wrong during a poker match to make him lose his cool.
* The English Dub of Episode 20 has Mannish Boy yell "crap baskets!", which [[https://twitter.com/JalenKCassell/status/952406563112628224 according]] to WordOfGod was an intentional reference to ''WebVideo/DragonBallZAbridged''.
* In the dub of the Empress episode, Joseph scolds Polnareff for being tricked by Nena, or as he so kindly puts it, being "[[VideoGame/MetalGearSolidV played like a damn fiddle.]]"
* In the dub of the final episode, Jotaro's comparison to the Wild West is modified into saying "It's high noon." A phrase popularized in ''VideoGame/{{Overwatch}}'' by the Wild West-inspired character Jesse [=McCree=]/Cole Cassidy, [[ActorAllusion voiced by]] [[Creator/MatthewMercer Jotaro's dub actor.]]
* In the dub of Episode 33, when Alessi sticks his head out from the door he says "Oh Polnareff! [[Film/TheShining Here comes Alessi!]]"
* In episode 14, Polnareff compares the holes in a corpse's body to the cheese in ''WesternAnimation/TomAndJerry''.
* In the dub of episode 38, Iggy calls Petshop "[[WesternAnimation/LooneyTunes Tweety]]".
* The DramaCD features an old man with the Stand [[Music/SignOTheTimes Strange Relation]].
* In the finale after Jotaro, Joseph and Polnareff part ways at the airport, Joseph is seen putting a tape labeled "[[Music/TheBeatles Get Back]]" in his walkman. This could also refer to the series as a whole, since the first part of the song refers to a man called Jojo.
** The OVA changes this to a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gipsy_Kings Gipsy Kings]] tape, likely of their 1987 self-titled third album.
* Avdol's father ([[spoiler:or rather, Avdol disguising himself as his father]]) has three chickens named Music/{{Prince}}, Music/{{Michael|Jackson}}, and Music/{{Lionel|Richie}}.
* When "Star Platinum" hits himself in the face with a frying pan in Episode 20, one of the faces it makes resembles ''Literature/{{Anpanman}}'''s.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:''Diamond is Unbreakable'']]
* '''Josuke Higashikata''''s Stand: [[Music/PinkFloyd Crazy Diamond]]. The official localized name is "Shining Diamond" which retains the [[Music/WishYouWereHere1975 "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"]] reference, though on a more subtle level.
** He also physically resembles Elvis, what with his hair and all (although the pompadour is a common style for JapaneseDelinquents).
** When Crazy Diamond retreats, the sound resembles the sound of [[DoomDoors a door closing]] in ''Franchise/{{Doom}}''.
* '''Anjuro "Angelo" Katagiri''''s name is inspired by [[https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angelo_Badalamenti Angelo Badalamenti]].
** "Angelo" uses a Stand named [[Music/{{Asia}} Aqua Necklace]].
* '''Koichi Hirose''''s Stand: [[Music/{{Meddle}} Echoes]].
** Koichi also looks like Gohan (Super Saiyan 2 version) from ''Manga/DragonBall'', while Echoes Act 1 and 2 bears similarities to the villain Cell, in that both take three forms, with the first two forms having a long tail and the second and third having progressively more humanoid shapes. Act 3 may also be likened to the villain Frieza.
* '''Okuyasu Nijimura''''s Stand: [[Music/TheBand The Hand]].
* '''Keicho Nijimura''''s Stand: Music/BadCompany.
* '''Tamami Kobayashi''''s Stand: [[Music/{{Quadrophenia}} The Lock]].
* '''Toshikazu Hazamada''''s Stand: [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface_%28band%29 Surface]].
** Surface is also a reference to ''Manga/{{Perman}}'''s eponymous copy-robots. In the series, the copy-robot transforms into an identical clone to help the main character keep his secret identity during missions. Hazamada himself points this out to Josuke, [[LampshadedTheObscureReference who has no clue what he's even talking about]].
* '''Yukako Yamagishi''''s Stand: [[Music/{{Sade}} Love Deluxe]].
* '''Akira Otoishi''''s Stand: Music/{{Red Hot Chili Pepper|s}}.
** Araki confirms that Red Hot Chili Pepper's design is inspired by [[Anime/DragonBallZ Frieza]].
** Akira's design draws inspiration from Kenji Ohtsuki, a Japanese rock musician who's signature look includes wavy hair and scar over his left eye. Coincidentally, Kenji and Araki had an interview together about horror stories not too long before Akira appeared in-person.
** Akira has "AC" and "DC" decorations on his cuffs, referring to [[Music/{{ACDC}} the band]] and the band's namesake.
** Akira proclaims that he aspires to live, "as hard and vicariously," as Music/JimiHendrix and Music/JeffBeck, with two of his other inspirations being [[Music/VanHalen Eddie Van Halen]] and Music/StevieRayVaughan. Speaking of Eddie Van Halen, in the anime adaptation, Akira's right-handed guitar tap sounds [[SuspiciouslySimilarSong nearly identical]] to Music/VanHalen's "Eruption".
* '''Shizuka Joestar''''s Stand: [[Music/{{U2}} Achtung Baby]].
* Both rats' Stand: Music/{{Ratt}}.
* '''Rohan Kishibe''''s Stand: [[Music/BobDylan Heaven's Door]].
* '''Tonio [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trussardi Trussardi]]''''s Stand: Music/PearlJam.
* '''Reimi Sugimoto''' has no Stand, but has two references to the Music/SydBarrett era of Music/PinkFloyd: her name is a play on "See Emily Play" and she has a dog called "Arnold," as in "Arnold Layne".
** Her backstory seems to be a direct reference to the urban legend "Humans Can Lick Too".
* '''Yoshikage Kira''''s Stand: [[Music/{{Queen}} Killer Queen]], with bonus points for the chorus of the song itself being a very apt description of the Stand's power set.[[note]][[SerialKiller She's a Killer Queen]]; [[MadeOfExplodium gunpowder, gelatin;]] [[ActionBomb dynamite with a laser beam;]] [[StuffBlowingUp guaranteed to blow your mind;]] anytime.[[/note]]
** Killer Queen's Second Bomb Sheer Heart Attack (a dual reference to both [[Music/SheerHeartAttack the album]] and the song that appeared on [[Music/NewsOfTheWorldQueen a completely different album]]) and final form Killer Queen [[Music/TheGameQueen Bites the Dust]] are both named after Queen songs.
** Kira himself is designed after Music/DavidBowie [[https://i.pinimg.com/originals/00/6a/b2/006ab2205d1d9d95532e46a3229eac76.jpg as he appeared]] during his [[Music/LetsDance "Serious Moonlight"]] tour. Also, with a character modeled after David Bowie using Stands named after Queen songs, it's no wonder that a SerialKiller such as himself is constantly [[Music/HotSpace "Under Pressure"]].
* '''Shigekiyo Yangu'''[='=]s Stand: [[Music/NeilYoung Harvest]].
* Yoshikage's father, '''Yoshihiro Kira''''s Stand: [[Music/AtomHeartMother Atom Heart Father]].
* '''Ken Oyanagi''''s Stand: [[Music/BoyzIIMen Boy II Man]].
* '''Mikitaka Hazekura'''[='=]s Stand(?): Music/EarthWindAndFire.
* '''Yuya Fungami's''' Stand is named [[Music/DeepPurple Highway Star]]. Changed in the Viz translation to "[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoobombs Highway Go Go]]".
* '''Toyohiro's''' Stand: Film/SuperFly (less a reference to the film itself, but rather its CultSoundtrack).
* '''Terunosuke Miyamoto's''' Stand: Music/{{Enigma}}.
** Its localized name: [[Music/TheloniousMonk Misterioso]].
** The way Enigma [[https://jojowiki.com/File:EnigmaTrapsCrazyDManga.png traps people]] [[https://jojowiki.com/File:EnigmaTrapsTomoko.png inside pieces of paper]] is a direct reference to Creator/MCEscher's artworks, many of which involve tesselation.
* '''Masazo Kinoto's''' Stand (with a mind of its own): Music/CheapTrick.
* '''Tama's''' Stand: Music/{{Stray Cat|s}}.
** Tama is a blue British Shorthair who dies, is buried, then comes back to life supernaturally, meaner than before, similar to Church from ''Literature/PetSematary''.
* '''Aya Tsuji's''' Stand: Cinderella refers to both the fairytale and also the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinderella_(band) band from the 80s]].
* Koichi's family has an old dog named [[Music/ThePolice "Police"]].
* In one of Yukako's earliest appearances, she mentions Music/{{Prince}} and asks what the term "funky music" means.
* When Okuyasu, at Tonio's restaurant, eats the mozzarella and tomato appetizer he finds delicious, he compares the dish to a Music/SimonAndGarfunkel duet, a sketch of Ucchan and Nanchan (a Japanese comedy duo) and to ''Manga/TomorrowsJoe''. In the dub, the Ucchan and Nanchan comparison is changed to one of Creator/AbbottAndCostello.
* The ship Joseph Joestar arrives on is called the S.S. [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_(band) Traffic]]
* When Joseph first meets Okuyasu, he mishears Okuyasu's name and calls him "Manga/{{Osomatsu|kun}}".
* While Jotaro and Josuke are searching for a rat, they come across a large clump of rats in a cube made of the rat's own meat. Jotaro pokes it with a stick, to see what it is. Josuke claims that he poked it in the same way [[Manga/DoctorSlump Arale pokes a piece of poop with a stick.]]
** When Jotaro first announced they were looking for a rat Stand user, Josuke immediately thinks of WesternAnimation/MickeyMouse.
* When Rohan meets Kinoto and is curious about why he doesn't want people to look at his back, Rohan's reminded of Duke Togo from ''Manga/{{Golgo 13}}''.
* In the Sheer Heart Attack chapter, an excerpt about Morioh from a book about Japanese vacation spots is mentioned, with the publisher being [[Manga/SakigakeOtokojuku Minmei]] Shobou.
* Nu Mikitakazzo N'shi is a shapeshifting alien who can bond to other humans, but who finds loud noises intolerable. In other words, he's just like ComicBook/{{Venom}}.
* ''Diamond is Unbreakable'' takes place in the summer of 1999, referencing the Music/{{Prince}} song of the same name.
* The name of the oneshot ''Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe'' references the English name of ''Literature/AlsoSprachZarathustra''.
* In episode 32 of the dub, Yuya suspects that Terunosuke Miyamoto's Stand is "[[Series/DoctorWho timey-wimey bullshit]]".
* Josuke is seen playing a video game on a [[Platform/SuperNintendoEntertainmentSystem Super Nintendo]] at some points, the anime changes this to a Platform/Nintendo64 to better fit the time period.
* In the dub, after Okuyasu [[ExplainingYourPowerToTheEnemy explains The Hand's abilities to Josuke]], he says "[[Film/SuddenImpact So go ahead, punk, make my day]]."
* After Rohan catches Josuke cheating at a game of dice, and his house burns down in a matter only tangentially related to it, the chapter ends by saying that "[his] grudge [[WesternAnimation/HowTheGrinchStoleChristmas grew three sizes that day]]."

* This part in particular takes many inspirations from Italian artworks and culture during UsefulNotes/TheRenaissance. For example, Araki stated in an interview that Giorno's hair locks is meant to resemble the hair on Creator/MichelangeloBuonarroti's ''Art/{{David}}'', while the character Scolippi outright quotes Michelangelo during one of his ramblings.
* '''Giorno Giovanna''''s Stand: [[Music/{{Prince}} Gold Experience]] and Gold Experience [[Music/WolfgangAmadeusMozart Requiem]]

* '''Bruno Bucciarati''''s Stand: [[Music/TheRollingStonesBand Sticky Fingers]]. The ''Sticky Fingers'' album cover has a functional zipper on the sleeve, which Araki states is the inspiration for Sticky Fingers' Stand powers.
* '''Polpo''''s Stand: Music/BlackSabbath
** Polpo bites off his fingers during his introduction, which may be a reference to Black Sabbath's lead guitarist, Tony Iommi, who lost two of his fingers during his teenage years in a factory accident.
* '''Leone Abbacchio''''s Stand: [[Music/TheMoodyBlues Moody Blues]]
* '''Guido Mista''''s Stand: Music/SexPistols

** Trish's second main outfit is based on the woman with black hair on the album cover for Music/{{Prince}}'s ''Music/AroundTheWorldInADay''.
** Trish herself is named after model [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trish_Goff Trish Goff]], of whom Araki is a big fan. The two even share a birthday (8 June).[[note]]Trish Una's birthday was originally 19 April, but it was later retconned to 8 June.[[/note]]

* '''Sale''''s Stand: [[Music/{{Kraftwerk}} Kraft Work]]
* '''Formaggio''''s Stand: [[Music/LittleFeat Little Feet]]
** According to Araki, Little Feet's design is based on the character [=XB2=] from Creator/EnkiBilal's graphic novel, ''The Carnival of Immortals''.
** The anime adaptation of the Little Feet vs. Aerosmith fight adds [[https://jojowiki.com/File:GW_Ep_11_-_Under_the_Radar.png a shot]] that resembles [[https://i.scdn.co/image/ab67616d0000b27301faa97efee860724dea9239 the cover]] for Little Feat's album, ''Under the Radar''.

* '''Squalo''''s Stand: [[Music/TheClash Clash]]
* '''Carne''''s Stand: [[Music/TheNotoriousBIG Notorious B.I.G]]
** Biggie's [[ShortLivedBigImpact two]] album titles {{lampshade|hanging}} the Stand's status as a DeathActivatedSuperpower: "Music/ReadyToDie" indicates Carne's willingness to give himself to Mista's bullets to call his Stand into action, and the posthumous "Music/LifeAfterDeath" signifies that Notorious B.I.G handily outlived its User, wreaking deadly havoc on Giorno and company.
* '''Risotto Nero''''s Stand: Music/{{Metallica}}, with its {{kiai}} being named after the album ''Music/{{Load|andReload}}''.
** According to Araki, Metallica's design is meant to resemble the Hattifatteners from ''Literature/TheMoomins''.
* '''Cioccolata''''s Stand: Music/GreenDay
* '''Secco''''s Stand: Music/{{Oasis}}
* '''Diavolo''''s Stand: Music/KingCrimson. He also has a sub-Stand named after a King Crimson song, [[Music/InTheCourtOfTheCrimsonKing Epitaph]].
* '''Scolippi''''s Stand: [[Music/TheRollingStonesBand Rolling Stones]]
* The janitor at Giorno's boarding school resembles [[Franchise/SuperMarioBros Mario]]. The anime gives him green clothes, like his brother Luigi.
* As a work centered on the Mafia, there are naturally a few shout outs to Mario Puzo's crime novel ''Literature/TheGodfather'':
** The plot thread of Narancia contracting an eye infection after losing his mother and wandering the streets, only to have it healed after being "adopted" into Bucciarati's gang and then being angrily told to continue his education is note-for-note identical to that of Tom Hagen, the ''informally-adopted'' Irish on and lawyer of the Corleone Family.
** Gelato choking to death swallowing the towel stuffed in his mouth as he watched his lover Sorbet hacked to pieces alive by Cioccolata is identical to how a victim of a double-murder committed by Luca Brasi, the Corleone Head Enforcer and hitman, died watching his friend dismembered limb-by-limb with a fire-axe.
** The dialogue in ''Sleeping Slaves'' with the florist asking Bucciarati to avenge his daughter is a probable reference to the iconic opening scene of [[Film/TheGodfather ''The Godfather'']], where an undertaker begs a Mafia don to avenge his raped daughter.
** The final panels with the hand-kissing in a sign of loyalty [[spoiler:to the new Don, Giorno Giovanna]] while Mista observes in the distance, much like the iconic final scene of the first movie with Don Michael Corleone having a hand-kissing and Kay observes.
* Sorbet's body being hacked into pieces and preserved in cases filled with formaldehyde is likely inspired by some of [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damien_Hirst Damien Hirst]]'s artworks, in which he preserves animal bodies (sometimes chopped into pieces) in formalin solution ([[https://jojowiki.com/File:Some_Comfort_Gained_from_the_Acceptance_of_the_Inherent_Lies_in_Everything_1996.jpg here's an example]]).
* [[https://jojowiki.com/File:Volume_62.jpg The cover of Volume 62]] (the 16th ''Golden Wind'' volume) has Giorno wrapped up in chains and doing a pose very similar to the one seen in [[https://officialmerchandisestore.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/holy-diver.jpeg the album cover]] for ''Holy Diver'' by Music/{{Dio}}.
* In the dub of episode 11, before Narancia uses Aerosmith to repel away a cat, he says "Move it! You're in my way, [[WesternAnimation/LooneyTunes putty tat]]!"
* In the dub of episode 18, Mista sees Ghiaccio using White Album, and calls him "[[WesternAnimation/FrostyTheSnowman Freaky the Snowman]]".
* In the dub of episode 24, Mista asks "[[Film/SnakesOnAPlane why are these stupid friggin' fingers on this stupid friggin' plane]]".
* In the dub of episode 33, Polnareff tells Diavolo [[Film/RevengeOfTheSith "I have the high ground!"]].

* Green Dolphin Street Prison is a reference to the film ''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Dolphin_Street_(film) Green Dolphin Street]]'', as well as the jazz Standard "[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Green_Dolphin_Street_(song) On Green Dolphin Street]]".
* '''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guess_%28clothing%29 Gwess]]'''' Stand: Music/GooGooDolls

* '''Enrico Pucci''''s Stands: Music/{{Whitesnake}}, [[Music/{{Wings}} C-Moon]], and [[Music/LedZeppelin Stairway To Heaven]]/[[Music/FreddieMercury Made in Heaven]]. Enrico is named for Enrico Coveri and [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emilio_Pucci Emilio Pucci]].
** While striking Anasui, Pucci screams at him "Domine quo vadis!" in reference to the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domine_quo_vadis%3F the painting of the same name]] by Annibale Carracci.
** According to Araki, C-Moon was designed to resemble [[Franchise/StarWars Darth Maul]].
* '''Music/WeatherReport''', his Stand of the same name, and the Stand's [[spoiler:secret ability]], [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_Weather_(album) Heavy Weather]]
** Weather's buffalo hat appears to be modeled after the mascot of Music/{{Jamiroquai}}, which was, in turn, designed after lead singer Jay Kay's hats.
* '''[[https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narciso_Rodriguez Narciso]] [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Sui Anasui]]''''s Stand: [[Music/VanHalen Diver Down]]

* '''Lang [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrangler_%28jeans%29 Rangler]]''''s Stand: [[Music/TheRollingStonesBand Jumpin' Jack Flash]]
* The pigeon sent to retrieve Jotaro's disc, Music/SavageGarden.
* '''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Mara Sports Maxx]]''''s Stand: Music/LimpBizkit
** Araki stated that Limp Bizkit's power to summon invisible zombies was inspired by the film ''Film/HollowMan''. One particular scene of [[spoiler:Sports Maxx bathed in blood, after dying and being revived with his own Stand power,]] comes to mind.
* '''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivian_Westwood Viviano Westwood]]''''s Stand: [[Music/BobDylan Planet Waves]]
** In the dub, he exclaims, [[Film/AlmostFamous "I am a golden god!"]], after beating up Sonny Likir.

* '''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenzo_Takada Kenzo]]''''s Stand: [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Dean Dragon's Dream]].

* '''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gucci Guccio]]''''s Stand: Music/{{Survivor|Band}}

* '''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miu_Miu Miu Miu]]/Miuccia Miuller''''s Stand: [[Music/ElvisPresley Jail House Lock]]
* '''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emanuel_Ungaro Ungalo]]''''s Stand: [[Music/{{Queen}} Bohemian Rhapsody]]. Not the mention the fact that the very basis of his power is ReferenceOverdosed.
** Particularly noteworthy is a news report in that story arc that mentions a fight between [[Manga/FistOfTheNorthStar Kenshiro and Raoh]] after the two came to life in Tokyo. The newscaster in the anime adaptation is voiced by none other than Creator/ShigeruChiba, the narrator of the 1984 ''Fist of the North Star'' anime.
* '''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonia_Rykiel Rikiel]]''''s Stand: [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jigsaw_%28band%29 Sky High]]

* One of the 14 phrases in DIO's diary is, "'''[[Music/Highway61Revisited Desolation Row]]'''".
* The cuff links used to prevent prisoners from escaping are called '''Music/LikeAVirgin'''.
* When Pucci learns of the Green Baby's birth, he uses Guccio's head as a stereo to play the "'''Hallelujah Chorus'''" from Music/GeorgeFredericHandel's ''Messiah'', specifically off of the ''Handel: Messiah'' album composed by John Eliot Gardiner in 1982, proclaiming it to be the best recording of ''Messiah'' there is. While he doesn't specify which version it is anymore in the anime, Pucci is still seen pulling Gardiner's album out from underneath his robe.
* The snails, with their associated body horror and polymorphing could be a reference to ''Manga/{{Uzumaki}}''.
* The rain of frogs in the prison caused by Weather Report could be a reference to ''Film/{{Magnolia}}''.
* When coming across the plant that's sprouting the Green Baby, Jolyne says that the leaves on it are shaped like [[ComicStrip/{{Peanuts}} Snoopy]]'s head.
* Jolyne references [[SpoilingShoutOut and spoils for the reader]] the famous twist ending of ''Film/TheSixthSense''.
* Donatello Versus' backstory, where a pair of stolen shoes is thrown and lands in front of his child self, seemingly falling from the sky, and the judge, not believing this, sends him to prison, is identical to Stanley's backstory in ''Literature/{{Holes}}''.

* '''Gyro''''s Stand Scan can become [[Music/{{ACDC}} Ball Breaker]]. His horse, Valkyrie, is named after Music/RichardWagner's "Music/RideOfTheValkyries".

* '''Diego''''s Stand: [[Music/DavidBowie Scary Monsters]]. His horse is Silver Bullet, after Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band.
** Diego's backstory with his mother feeding him soup from her hands is a reference to Creator/OsamuTezuka's ''Manga/{{Dororo}}'', where the titular character's mother does the exact same thing.
* '''[[Music/JamesBrown Hot Pants']]''' Stand: [[Music/TheProdigy Cream Starter]]. Her horse is [[Music/JamesBrown Gets Up]].
* '''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Funny_Valentine Funny Valentine's]]''' Stand: [[Music/{{ACDC}} Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap]]. Later on he gets an ability named [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_Train Love Train.]]
* A flashback to Valentine's childhood involves him receiving a handkerchief that belonged to his late father, who hid it on his person while being tortured as a prisoner of war. With the exception of [[EyeScream where]] the handkerchief was hidden, it's practically a shot-for-shot remake of the famous [[AssShove watch scene]] in ''Film/PulpFiction''.
* '''[[Music/TheAllmanBrothersBand Mountain Tim's]]''' Stand: [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oh_Lonesome_Me Oh! Lonesome Me]]. His horse, Ghost Rider in the Sky, is named after widely-recorded country classic "Ghost Riders in the Sky".

* Dual layered with the "Milagro Man" - as Milagro is Spanish for "Miracle" it's a reference to "Miracle Man" by Music/OzzyOsbourne, but Milagro is also the name for a Japanese leather goods company which produces (among other things) wallets. Thus tying back into the whole money aspect.

* '''Wu Tomoki''''s Stand [[Music/SteelyDan Doctor Wu]]
* '''Satoru Akefu''' might perhaps hold the strangest shoutout in the series. His design and ability are highly inspired by the surrealist painter Creator/ReneMagritte, who had a tendency to draw paintings of men in dapper outfits with their heads always blocked out by something, like in his most known painting, ''The Son Of Man''. The cover art of Chapter 96 and Volume 23, both featuring Satoru is a direct shoutout to another of René's paintings, ''Golconda''.
* Satoru Akefu turns out to be '''Toru''''s Stand [[Music/ElvisPresley Wonder of U]].
** When a journalist visits Akefu in his office, he finds the doctor unresponsively standing in the corner of the room, back turned to him, akin to the ending of ''Film/TheBlairWitchProject''.
** Right before switching over to Elvis Presley's "The Wonder of You" to keep his composure, an emotionally-distressed Toru is seen listening to [[Music/BlizzardOfOzz "Crazy Train"]].

* In Joshu's ADayInTheLimelight arc, "Milagro Man", he goes to see a ''Franchise/PiratesOfTheCaribbean'' movie in theaters (likely ''[[Film/PiratesOfTheCaribbeanOnStrangerTides On Stranger Tides]]'', since the manga started and takes place in 2011), and buys 9 seats and sits himself in the middle so that he doesn't have to be around noisy moviegoers. After the movie, the theater holds a raffle, and Joshu wins, earning himself a figurine of Jack Sparrow.
