* Shipping wars are pretty common in ''VideoGame/{{Amagami}}.'' Even though each girl was given her own arc of 4 episodes. The shippers used to say they were feeling withdrawal from not being able to bash those who are not the love interest of that arc.
* ''Anime/AquarionEvol'', oh boooooooy. The Zessica/Amata and Mikono/Kagura factions are totaly vicious against the Mikono/Amata pairing. Amata is called "tool" and "ungrateful bastard" for [[spoiler:rejecting Zessica's love]], Mikono is called "slut" and "weak" for not falling into Amata's arms right away and being confused about Kagura, Zessica used by self-projecting fangirls and fanboys who think Amata owes her cock because she loves him and would sacrifice lots of things for him. On the flip side Kagura is either made into a heartless and evil brute (ignoring how he isn't without his depths), or glorified la Zessica while his fans insist that Mikono owes him vagina for being his MoralityPet -- so Mikono going for Amata instead makes her "a shallow and traitor whore" who "abaondoned Kagura and broke Zessica".
* The arguments between fans of ''Manga/AttackOnTitan'' get quite intense, especially fans of Eren x Mikasa, Eren x Historia, and Eren x Levi, although almost every ship involving Eren or Levi has been involved in a shipping war.
* ''Anime/{{Bakugan}}'' is somewhat a curious case, as the main target is not [[TheHero Dan]], but '''[[TheStoic Shun]]''', his [[TheLancer Lancer]] and {{Foil}}. The first season teased [[ProperLady Alice]], while third season teased [[WarriorPrincess Fabia]]. Surprisingly, the shipwar is notably low on bashing and cursing, with each side prefering to pile evidence to try and top each other.
* ''Manga/BlackButler'' pretty much is a war within itself nowadays, especially with the new season. (What else is expected though, when every male in the show is a total {{Bishonen}}?) Despite the only confirmed canon pairing being the (platonic) love between Sebastian/Any Cat He Can Find and the closest thing Ciel has to a canon [[ArrangedMarriage "love]] [[ShipTease interest"]] is [[KissingCousins Lizzie]] many [[YaoiFangirl fangirls]] persist over pairings like Ciel x Sebastian, which has some [[ShipTease Yaoi Fanservice]] in the manga and was taken up a notch in the anime (especially in season 2). Though Sebastian's obsession with ([[IAmAHumanitarian eating]]) Ciel's Soul ''may'' make it somewhat canon in its own right. You'll also stumble along Sebastian paired with Meirin, Finnian, Bard, Alois, Lau, Claude, ''Tanaka''... Try giving a solid standing for your pairing in a ship board, or ''especially'' on Website/YouTube, and you'll usually have at least 5 people calling you a bitch. This fandom tends to be nicer, but still.
** Aside from the most common pairings of Master/Butler, Ciel/Sebastian and Alois/Claude, the circus arc opened a new possibility of a Heterosexual Pairing with Ciel. You now have the option of supporting Ciel/Lizzy, or Ciel/Doll [[spoiler:aka Freckles]]. You can find a couple forums with wars about this. A lot of it is troll logic about how if Ciel really loved Doll, she'd be in the anime, or if he loved Lizzy, insert whatever reason you like. Oh, and if you think you're safe just sticking to Alois/Ciel, which is practically [[Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowers Belarus/Russia]] based on certain fansubs, you're ''not''.
** Actually, the only pairing that doesn't get too fought over is Lau and [=RanMao=]. It's rarely shipped, but no one fights over it. Probably because it's pretty undeniable that it's hot.
** Ciel/Lizzie ([[RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap and Lizzie in general]]) is getting more support lately, though, as we learn that [[spoiler:Elizabeth ''did'' learn swordmanship, is good enough with it to protect Ciel from zombies, and she won't keep hiding it anymore]]... Did that bring wank? Of course it did, specially with rabid {{yaoi fangirl}}s who jumped on to accuse Elizabeth's development was a total AssPull.
* ''Manga/BlackCat'': Creed/Train fans and Saya/Train fans don't really get along. Huge arguments were made over whether Train ever liked Saya as more than a friend, which evidently would make it more canonical than the pairing of Creed and Train. Not that any of this really matters, considering that Saya [[spoiler:died very early in the story]] and that Creed is the BigBad with a rather questionable grip on sanity and whose obvious homolust towards Train is equally obviously one-sided.
* ''Manga/BlackClover'':
** Due to being the primary {{Love Interest}}s of Asta and {{Foil}}s to each other, combat between Asta/Noelle and Asta/Mimosa is quite common.
** While Asta has an UnwantedHarem of his own, the biggest combat ended up being Yami/Charlotte vs. Yami/Vanessa, due to the storylines of how they both fell in love with him.
* ''Manga/{{Bleach}}'': The Ship-To-Ship Combat between fans of Ichigo/Orihime versus fans of Ichigo/Rukia is particularly bloody.
** Most of the existing Bleach forums out there were established during the Soul Society arc, a period of time when the fandom considered Ichigo/Rukia to be [[FanPreferredCouple canon]], so when Ichigo/Orihime began to develop, the forum environments turned hostile, with some moderators taking sides. Wank ensued, possibly causing the downtime of entire forums during peak periods. To this day, shipping sections on ''Bleach'' forums are usually heavily regulated or missing entirely, and the majority of Ichigo/Orihime fans have banded together on their own ship-oriented forum.
** A famous incident was a case of [[http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_wank/1009473.html Ichigo/Rukia vs Wikipedia editors]], where in the wank was sparked over [[SeriousBusiness alphabetical order]] of the characters' names. [[http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_wank/1238187.html?thread=211092139#t211092139 Something like this happened in Japan as well]].
** It gets even worse when both [[Creator/MasakazuMorita Japanese]] and [[Creator/JohnnyYongBosch American]] voice-actors for Ichigo [[http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_wank/1245336.html offer their opinion on the shipping issue, and one side of the war switch from fangirling to instant hate.]]
** Some Ulquiorra/Orihime fans have also joined in the Ship-to-Ship Combat against Ichigo/Orihime. Orihime is frequently criticised for not falling out of love with Ichigo and is blamed for the BreakTheCutie events that happen to her -- some of them being caused by Ulquiorra. Alternatively, these "special" fans tend to deliberately handwave or completely erase [[DracoInLeatherPants Ulquiorra's]] [[HeroKiller less]] [[ManipulativeBastard savory]] [[LackOfEmpathy traits]] to make him look like Orihime's "perfect prince" who'll whisk her away from Ichigo... nevermind that the major appeals of the couple would be the potential MindGameShip, AngelDevilShipping, CorruptTheCutie and/or FoeYayShipping aspects.
** Some yaoi and Ichigo/Orihime fans have jumped into the Ship-To-Ship Combat by bashing Ulquiorra/Orihime [[http://ulquihime-sucks.deviantart.com/ with accounts dedicated to it]], and [[http://ulquiprincess-sucks.deviantart.com/art/Anti-Ulquihime-146675188?q=boost%3Apopular%20anti%20UlquiHime&qo=2 obnoxious]] stamps. Noting the first reference, it's particularly noticeable how much utter contempt there is for Orihime. She just can't win in fandom.
** The manga is over at chapter 686, and the {{official couple}}s are [[spoiler:Ichigo/Orihime and Rukia/Renji]]. To say fans are conflicted over this would be an understatement; in addition to the bitter Ichigo/Rukia fans, fans of Orihime note that her cameo as Ichigo's wife, without ever exploring her deepening feelings for him, much less his feelings for her, feels like a bummer for both characters.
* In the ''Manga/CandyCandy'' fandom the fights, scuffles and screaming matches between [[SlapSlapKiss Candy x Terry]] and [[SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan Candy x Albert]] fangirls ''have been going on for more than thirty years''. The first cry at how the ending [[spoiler:left Candy alone but more or less in peace (and might have opened the gates for a Candy/Albert match-up)]], while the latter accuse the opposing shippers of handwaving or ignoring all the emotional problems that Candy went through because of Terry.
* ''Manga/CaseClosed'': [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Shinichi]] / [[ActionGirl Ran]] and [[DeadpanSnarker Conan]] / [[ASharedSuffering Ai]] (keep in mind that Shinichi and Conan are the same person). Some boards even ban threads discussing either pairing. Though the English-speaking fandom is fairly peaceful, you still need to tread carefully.
* Let's not even get STARTED on the shipping wars in ''Literature/ACertainMagicalIndex''. Given that there are over TEN THOUSAND girls in his harem if we count the Sisters as individuals (and there's more than enough evidence to prove that), it gets pretty bloody over in that fandom assuming you're not in the sizable portion who just wants him to MarryThemAll.
** It gets particularly bloody between Touma x Mikoto shippers and Touma x Index shippers, given that they're the two main love interests of the series. While there isn't a lot of bashing, there's certainly a lot of evidence.
*** Touma x Mikoto shippers like to point out their various dates and how Index basically treats Touma like crap despite him basically [[PrettyFreeloaders taking care of her]] and protecting her and getting nothing in return - except for a bite on the head.
* ''Anime/CodeGeass'': The pairing wars between Lelouch/Kallen and Lelouch/C.C. shippers can get pretty vicious at times. And they're ''hardly'' the only two ships out there: there's also [[FoeYayShipping Lelouch/Suzaku]], [[IncestYayShipping Lelouch/Nunnally, Lelouch/Euphemia]], [[SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl Lelouch/Shirley]], [[HoYay Lelouch/Rolo]]... [[LauncherOfAThousandShips yeah.]] That's not even getting into all the Suzaku ships, either: there's Suzaku/Euphie, Suzaku/Lelouch, Suzaku/Gino, etc..
** The movie, ''Anime/CodeGeassLelouchOfTheResurrection'', fuel the shipping war further most especially in the end [[spoiler:where Lelouch and C.C. ended up together and the latter is the one who resurrected the former]]. Fans of other pairings didn't take this very well...
* ''Anime/CowboyBebop'': Spike/Julia vs. Spike/Faye. Many Spike/Julia fans insist Faye is a slutty, obnoxious bitch who's too immature and whiny for Spike, while Spike/Faye fans often believe Julia's a fickle syndicate whore who destroyed Spike's relationship with his former best friend and ultimately [[spoiler:got him killed]].
* ''Manga/DGrayMan'': The shipping wars of pairing [[LauncherOfAThousandShips Allen]] with their favorite {{OTP}}. The sad thing is that he hasn't even really shown ''that'' much interest in ''any'' of them, being a [[WordOfGod confirmed]] CelibateHero who has expressed adamant disinterest in anything romantic. There's the obvious wars between Lenalee/Allen and Road/Allen fans, and ''then'' there's the HoYay / FoeYayShipping fans (Kanda/Allen, Lavi/Allen, [[FoeYayShipping Tyki/Allen]])...
* In the ''VisualNovel/DaCapo'' anime, Nemu is officially the winner of Junichi [[spoiler:with the exception of ''Da Capo If'', in which Kotori wins, mainly because Nemu's dead]], since the sequel, ''VisualNovel/DaCapoII'', follows their grandkids. However, a lot of fans support some of the other girls since Nemu is usually seen as TheScrappy. Of the other remaining girls, Kotori often gets the most support, since she seems to get along very well with Junichi in the anime.
* ''Anime/DanganRonpa3'':
** Hinanami (Chiaki and Hajime) and Komahina (Nagito and Hajime) didn't fight much in [[VisualNovel/Danganronpa2GoodbyeDespair the visual novels' day]], but soon started when the anime all but outright stated the former ship as canon while completely ignoring the latter. The only thing Komahina got was [[spoiler:one HoYay BigLippedAlligatorMoment of Izuru and Nagito meeting]], which was played as a joke and later overshadowed by [[spoiler:Izuru and Chiaki's interactions]]. This predictably caused Hinanami fans to start preparing their victory fireworks and Komahina fans to start preparing their weapons.
** The war between them was nothing compared to the three-way war of Munakata/Chisa vs Munakata/Juzo vs Juzo/Chisa, though. Munakata/Chisa fans call Juzo an irredeemable asshole trying to break their ship apart; Munakata/Juzo fans call Chisa nothing but a ClingyJealousGirl whose sole purpose is living for Munakata; Juzo/Chisa fans call Munakata as an insane extremist who doesn't deserve Chisa; it just goes on and on. And it only got worse when it was revealed which of them Juzo was in love with: [[spoiler:[[ArmoredClosetGay Munakata]]. Cue the Munakata/Juzo fans screaming how people were homophobes if they didn't ship it, with the other two insisting that Munakata/Juzo was only shipped by insane YaoiFangirls.]] Just...good lord. Thankfully, these arguments have died down now, and many instead opt to ship the three of them together.
* ''Anime/DarlingInTheFranxx'':
** With Ichigo and 002 being the most important girls in the promotional materials, and especially due to episode 2, you have Hiro/Ichigo and 002/Hiro shippers either at each other's throats or smugly claiming superiority over the other, similar to the [[Anime/{{Kiznaiver}} Chidori vs Noriko debates]].
** Mitsuru/Kokoro vs. Futoshi/Kokoro. Those who defend the former argue that Kokoro's interactions with Mitsuru are much more interesting due to their [[OppositesAttract opposite natures]], and that could lead to some great CharacterDevelopment, while her relationship with Futoshi doesn't have much depth beyond them being SickeninglySweethearts. The side of the fanbase that prefers Futoshi/Kokoro think such relationship wouldn’t work because of [[DrunkWithPower Mitsuru's]] [[JerkWithAHeartOfJerk less than ideal]] [[SmugSnake personality]] and his general treatment of his partner, while Futoshi's [[GentleGiant personality]] and [[NiceGuy relationship with Kokoro]] are endearing to watch. Furthermore, the fact that it would allude to {{Netorare}} doesn't help.
* ''Manga/DeathNote'' has a couple pairings, such as [[FoeYayShipping Light/L]], Mello/Near, and Mello/Matt, along with pairing any of the above with an original character in fanfiction. In particular, a few years back, the Mello/Near shippers got into a ''nasty'' fight with the Mello/Matt ones.
** There's also a minor shipwar between Light/Misa and L/Misa shippers. Needless to say, neither get on well with the Light/L shippers who were as much of an inspiration for the HetIsEw trope as [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing Heero/Duo]]. The shipping wars simply tend to be more along het and slash lines rather than within the slash and het fandoms, with Misa and Halle getting bashed because they take Light and Mello away from their potential male partners.
* The ''Franchise/{{Devilman}}'' fandom has always had one or another discussion about the nature of Akira's feelings for Ryo and Miki, but the newest adaptation ''Anime/DevilmanCrybaby'' has brought them to the internet surface.
** As mentioned, the bigest scuffle is between the Akira/Ryo and Akira/Miki fandom corners. On one hand Akira/Miki fans tend to dismiss Akira's canonical HomoeroticSubtext with Ryo and prop up solely his feelings for Miki, often accusing Akira/Ryo shippers of fetishizing homosexuality. On the other, Akira/Ryo shippers reduce Akira and Ryo's complex relationship ''solely'' to their HomoeroticSubtext, downplay Miki's importance to Akira and often call every single Akira/Miki fan "homophobic" (regardless of their ''actual'' views on LGBT+ people and contents)
** As a bonus... Does anyone ship Miko with Kukun or with Miki? It doesn't get ''as'' heated as the example above though, likely due to Kukun being quite popilar and Miki being too much of a NiceGirl to hate; meaning one can choose either ship and not get that much flak for it.
* The ''Franchise/{{Digimon}}'' fandom suffered from a terminal case of PairTheSpares in its early years that went something like this: "Digidestined must be paired up in descending order by importance." Thus, Taichi/Sora, Takeru/Hikari and Mimi with either Koushiro, Yamato, or Jyou (despite that she rarely even ''speaks'' to the first two).
** Takeru/Hikari was pretty popular since the first season. Then Daisuke appeared the next season, and a shipping war started. Which wasn't helped by the continued and increased ShipTease of Takeru/Hikari in 02.
** Taichi/Sora and Yamato/Sora fans still have it out once in a while. Taichi/Sora fans rationalize that Yamato comes off as a huge douche for part of the second season and therefore can't stand the thought of him ending up with Sora, or that Taichi and Sora were "obviously" flirting/in love with each other for the entire first season so Sora ending up with Yamato instead was a giant cop-out. Yamato/Sora fans use the DistantFinale, the fact that a good part of the Taichi/Sora ShipTease was only 2 explicit lines of Taichi's in ''Adventure'', how Sora ''willingly'' chose Yamato over Taichi without anyone pressuring her into it (and having her back off could have sexist UnfortunateImplications about her feeling that "she owes Taichi affection"), the other fact that Taichi got over Sora's supposed "friendzoning" ''in less than 24 hours'' (and even showed attraction to ''another girl'' named [[TheCutie Catherine]] so he wasn't as "hurt" and "spurned" as Taichi/Sora fans insisted he was), and how it breaks the "Hero gests together with Heroine" clichés for rationalization, with some of them pointing out that many people end up with someone other than their oldest friend/first crush. And in the middle, the Taichi/Yamato fans- often considered the most populous shippers in Digimon fandom- are very bitter because of the constant ShipTease between Taichi/Yamato in the first season, including official Taichi/Yamato art published in a magazine. The whole debate over whether Yamato and Sora were StrangledByTheRedString or not will probably never fully die out, in fact, due to [[http://jippy-kandi.tumblr.com/post/57207225067/sorato-taiora-digimon-japanese-sub-vs-english-dub the apparent removal]] of ''actual'' Sora/Yamato ShipTease from the Japanese original.
** Not even the Digimon themselves were spared. In most cases, the Digidestined who were paired had their Digimon paired up with each other. The more well-known one is Patamon/Gatomon (or even Angemon/Angewomon), and Veemon/Gatomon. Though this becomes a bit of a shipping three-way battle when Wizardmon/Gatomon gets involved, and they've all butted heads with one another numerous times in the past.
** Now that ''Anime/DigimonAdventureTri'' is coming, the Taiora and Sorato fanbases are starting to come back to life. Since this season intends to focus on the first eight kids, the Takari and Daikari fanbases haven't got quite so cagey, yet.
* The ''Franchise/DragonBall'' fandom used to be pretty calm in terms of fans of various pairings, even when they conflicted.... and then ''Anime/DragonBallSuper'' came along and gave Trunks a semi-official love interest in the form of Mai, with whom he had never otherwise interacted. All of a sudden, fans of [[Anime/DragonBallGT Trunks/Pan]] and [[Anime/DragonBallZ Trunks/Goten]] are viciously hating on Mai and saying she is "getting in the way", while fans of Trunks/Mai vocally deride other pairings for having little to no canon basis.
* ''Literature/{{Durarara}}'': Some Shizuo/Izaya fans will rip out the throats of anyone who mentions Namie or Vorona, while Mikado is just torn to pieces between everyone who wants him as their [[OneTruePairing OTP]] {{uke}}.
* ''Manga/ElfenLied'' is notable for two reasons. First, the main LoveTriangle is between the UnluckyChildhoodFriend ClingyJealousGirl [[KissingCousins cousin]] and a psychopathic, [[SlasherSmile sadistic]] {{Yandere}} [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds with a tragic backstory]]. Second, because [[ArmedWithCanon the anime writers got in on the shipping war in favor of Kouta/Lucy]], while the manga supports Kouta/Yuka. Accordingly, Yuka's ClingyJealousGirl tendencies are played up to the point of {{Flanderization}}, while Lucy's sadism and malice are played down in favor of her bitterness and rage at the world (which are easier to sympathize with). The anime also has Kouta explicitly say that he would rather take Lucy to the festival if Yuka hadn't asked him first, which wasn't the case in the manga, and omits Lucy's admission that [[spoiler: she would have killed Yuka]] even if Kouta had been honest with her. [[spoiler:Lucy also appears to survive her final battle in the anime, but as it's CutShort, the anime team don't get to resolve the LoveTriangle.]]
* ''Manga/FairyTail'':
** Natsu/Lucy vs Natsu/Lisanna. Lucy fans will often point out Natsu's lack of any sort of interest in Lisanna after her return, and fanfics will have her stay dead. Lisanna fans will cite the anime filler scenes that set her up as Natsu's tragic former love interest, their and fanfiction will often have Lucy turn out to have been a shallow replacement for her who is booted from or ignored by the guild upon Lisanna's return.
** Erza/Jellal vs Erza/Natsu vs Erza/Gray. Gray and Natsu fans get along pretty well by uniting against Jellal. While he's got canon on his side (he and Erza are the only characters to even kiss thus far, the only main characters to admit to having mutual feeling, the only ones to have a heavily developed romantic history and interactions, the only...) it's easy for Natsu and Gray fans to point out that he's also the only one to have seriously harmed Erza, often claiming that being BrainwashedAndCrazy at the time doesn't excuse him because he still physically did it, and it's easy to create a story where Erza comes to that same conclusion and decides to ignore him.
** Wendy/Chelia vs Wendy/Romeo. This one is pretty peaceful compared to the above two wars and mainly comes down to whether you prefer to have Wendy in a PseudoRomanticFriendship or in a heterosexual one. Chelia has canon on her side by virtue of it focusing more on her relationship with Wendy compared to Romeo, but it's easy for fans to imagine Romeo develop a crush on Wendy given they're both the only two pre-teens about each other's age in Fairy Tail.
* ''Manga/FoodWars'' has the question of Soma/Erina vs. Soma/Megumi. Fans of the former generally [[RealWomenNeverWearDresses bash Megumi for being "weak" and "dependent on Soma"]], whereas fans of the latter often hate Erina for being a {{Tsundere}} DefrostingIceQueen who was a bit too icy at first, even though she's gotten much better since. Smaller ships like Soma/Alice or Soma/Ikumi generally stay out of it.
* The ''Anime/{{Free}}'' fandom is mostly peaceful, but it's already starting to show some baby symptoms. While the two ladies in the cast are mostly respected and any HetIsEw against them [[SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome is quickly shut down by the fangirls]] (and not to mention [[ShipMates some people tend to ship Go with Mikoshiba]] and sometimes with [[LesYay Chigusa]] instead of going the DieForOurShip way), the tensions between Makoto/Haruka shippers and Rin/Haruka shippers are beginning to heat up...
** As of episode 6, it's safe to say that the fragile peace has been broken and we have a full on ship war. After [[spoiler: Rin's ungracious reaction to ''finally'' defeating Haruka]], a good part of the fandom has started SCREAMING for his blood... and unsurprisingly, the leaders of this anti-Rin "movement" are the rabid Haruka/Makoto shippers.
** And the "war" cotinued! Not only that, but a new "shipping faction" started to appear when Sousuke Yamazaki, a character from the original novels, was slated to appear in the second season. When Sousuke finally appeared and was shown to be ''very'' close to Rin, the fans went into either lovegasms or hategasms.
* ''Manga/FruitsBasket'': [[OfficialCouple Kyo/Tohru]] vs. [[FanPreferredCouple Yuki/Tohru]] fans, with the occasional alternate pairing thrown into the mix (Kyo/[[ClingyJealousGirl Kagura]], [[CleaningUpRomanticLooseEnds Yuki/Machi]], [[AgeGapRomance Shigure/Tohru]],[[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy Momiji/Tohru]]... [[LauncherOfAThousandShips anyone/Tohru]]...).
* ''Franchise/FullmetalAlchemist'':
** Although not as bad as it used to be, the ''Anime/FullmetalAlchemist2003'' fandom fought hard over the classic trio of [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Ed/Winry]], Ed/Rose and [[HoYay Ed/Roy]]. Poor Rose herself was on the receiving end of DieForOurShip quite a bit, to the point that even mentioning her name on a Ed/Winry forum is... discouraged. (Winry and Roy were usually spared, due to greater potential for TyingUpRomanticLooseEnds and the fact that they were well-liked characters in general, whereas Rose was divisive even outside of the shipping wars.)
** ''Anime/FullmetalAlchemistTheConquerorOfShamballa'' causes even more ship wars. Alfons/Ed became popular which only caused issues with people who shipped Edward with Winry, Roy, or [[IncestYayShipping Al]]. Noah isn't even on the radar for most shippers due to [[TheScrappy the disdain toward her]] but people will occasionally debate thatshe would be a good pair for either Al or Ed [[spoiler:due to them being stuck on their side of the gate]]. People who ship either of the brothers with Rose tend to think of Noah as a [[SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute poor substitute.]]
*** There's pairing Edward with [[spoiler:Roy's or Winry's alters]] vs pairing them with Roy or Winry. Both of the former characters should exist somewhere but they were [[OCStandIn never shown]] besides [[spoiler:Roy's alter]] appearing in a piece of official art. The debate largely ties in with people who write Edward as eventually [[spoiler:going through the gate and [[FixFic reuniting with his friends]]]] while others acknowledge that's impossible and have him fall for [[ReplacementGoldfish the next best thing]] to his loved one.
** Even more discouraging is throwing Armony and Sophie's names out as Ed pairings. The people who actually have played the games and know what you're talking about will either love/appreciate you, or want you dead. Even though Armony and Ed are pretty canon ''solely'' for ''[[VideoGame/FullmetalAlchemistAndTheBrokenAngel Broken Angel]]'', it's a small fanbase on the webs.
*** Armony and Ed's relationship is just one of teacher/apprentice and friendship, though. So calling it a "canon" romance is a really big stretch. That coupled with the first videogame having a bad reception in general, may explain why the couple isn't remotely as popular as the others.
** Possibly the craziest section is the one who ships Ed/Fangirl (or Anyone/Fangirl). Yes, you read that right; wherever you go in the fandom, you're going to find at least a couple crazies who are completely convinced that they are married to Ed or Al, or at least dating them, and that the fictional characters hate the rest of the fanbase for even suggesting other pairings. It's sadly some SeriousBusiness when these folks come out, because at least 70% of the time, they ''aren't'' trolling.
** The [[Manga/FullmetalAlchemist manga fandom]] itself has had better luck, but wars have arisen between fans who insist that Roy/Riza and/or Al/Mei are {{Official Couple}}s and fans who insist that there isn't enough evidence to claim that they are. Basically, it's ship vs. ''no'' ship here.
*** Some parts of the manga fandom do tend to be pretty militant toward fans who prefer non-canon couples to OfficialCouple Ed/Winry and the various "heavily implied" ones (Roy/Riza, Al/Mei and Ling/Lan Fan). It often becomes an engine of the [[BrokenBase everlasting "which version of FMA is better" war]], since non-canon couples are far more popular with fans of ''Anime/FullmetalAlchemist2003'', where Ed didn't have a canonical love interest and was overall ObliviousToLove.
** When a NonSerialMovie (''[[Anime/FullmetalAlchemistTheSacredStarOfMilos The Sacred Star of Milos]]'') was announced after the ''Brotherhood'' series ended, the new female lead Julia Crichton got calls of "she better not break up my OTP" shit ''right after the movie was revealed''.
* ''Manga/FutureDiary'' had some minor ship wars between Yuki/Yuno fans and Akise/Yuki fans.
* ''Manga/TheQuintessentialQuintuplets'': This series confirms at the very beginning that Fuutarou will end up with one of the Nakano quintuplets, but leaves it unclear as to who this will be, so this is to be expected. It's taken to the point that some of the shipping factions have gotten names, e.g. the Nino shippers go by the moniker Nino Gang. There's also a subset of fans hoping for a MarryThemAll ending.
* ''Franchise/{{Gundam}}''
** ''Anime/MobileSuitGundam00'' has seen its share of Ship-To-Ship Combat, with fans endlessly debating about who [[TheHero Setsuna]] should be paired with, whether it be with [[ActualPacifist Marina Ismail]], [[BridgeBunnies Feldt Grace]] or [[CuteAndPsycho Nena Trinity]]. It doesn't help that supplementary materials (which incidentally are considered non-canon) released lead to complications as to who Setsuna will really end up with, thus leading to further confusion and debate. Of course some ship him with [[FoeYayShipping Graham]] and [[CargoShip Gundam]] as well.
** ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamAGE'' is starting to see an intense shipping war between those who support [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Flit/Emily]] and those who support [[RescueRomance Flit/Yurin]]. While it's agreed that both pairings would be good and have their own high points (Yurin is a sweet NiceGirl and the EnsembleDarkHorse, but Emily has the advantage of knowing Flit for a longer time), the fact that Flit's son Asemu resembles Emily in concept and promotional art has some shippers going at it. [[spoiler:The fact that the WhamEpisode has [[TheWoobie poor Yurin]] [[KillTheCutie die in the WORST way possible]] does NOT help the series's case.]]
** ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEED'' would have been bad enough: [[MindGameShip Kira/Fllay]] vs [[{{Twincest}} Kira/Cagalli]] vs [[AuthorAvatar Kira/Lacus]] vs [[HoYay Kira/Athrun]] vs [[DefectingForLove Athrun/Cagalli]] vs [[ArrangedMarriage Athrun/Lacus]] (+ /- [[CantSpitItOut Yzak/Shiho]] vs [[HoYay Dearka/Yzak]] vs [[DefectingForLove Dearka/Miriallia]] vs [[ForgottenFallenFriend Tolle/Miriallia]]), but then ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEEDDestiny'' gave us Athrun's [[HaremGenre Harem]], [[PlatonicWritingRomanticReading Shinn/Stellar vs Shinn/Luna]] (+ /- [[HoYay Shinn/Rey]] and [[AmnesiacDissonance Neo/Murrue]] vs [[DefectingForLove Andy/Murrue]]), and ShipSinking (and in one case, Ship Raising). Minefields aplenty for all.
*** And then Shinn and Lunamaria's Japanese voice actors got married. I guess that's a solution, too?
** Want to start [[FlameWar an argument]], you know, [[{{Troll}} just to spice things up a little?]] Get a bunch of ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing'' fans together, and start debating [[{{Yaoi|Genre}} Heero x Duo]] vs. Heero x Relena. Wanna spice things up even more? Bring other pairings into the equation...conventional and... [[CrackPairing otherwise.]]
*** You don't even need to pit 2/1 and 1/R fans against each other. Go to the "correct" fandom corner and say that Duo should top Heero. Watch the fangirls in that corner tearing each other down about that.
* ''Literature/{{Haganai}}'': Kodaka/Sena and Kodaka/Yozora shippers. In other parts of the vast reaches of the internet, there's a battle brewing between those who prefer to see Kodaka with Yozora, and others who would rather see him with Sena; the other girls are largely relegated to DemotedToExtra status in this regard. Amusingly, Kodaka himself keeps letting it slip that ''Rika'' is really his type... or would be with a better personality, but that goes for all the girls.
* ''Manga/{{Haikyuu}}'': There's a drift between people who ship Hinata with Kageyama and those who ship Hinata with Yachi.
* If you ever see the name "''Literature/HaruhiSuzumiya''" used in conjunction with the word "{{shipping}}", ''get out while you still have the chance.'' Someone is going to get flamed. Odds are, everyone will. In other words, never discuss your favorite pair with [[LauncherOfAThousandShips Kyon]] involved. Side pairings aren't exempt either; Haruhi/Mikuru is particularly divisive even when Kyon ''isn't'' in the discussion.
* ''Manga/HayateTheCombatButler'' has had a lot of escalating Ship-To-Ship Combat ever since the introduction of [[spoiler:Athena Hellos]], Hayate's [[PuppyLove canonical first girlfriend]]. While the old shipping lines (Hayate/Nagi vs. Hayate/Hinagiku vs. Hayate/Nishizawa vs. Hayate/Maria, [[LauncherOfAThousandShips etc.]]) still exist, the major battle seems to be between those who think Hayate and his NewOldFlame are [[FirstGirlWins destined to be together forever]] without any doubts, and those who think that she is an self-absorbed {{Yandere}} who ruined Hayate's life by [[HeroicBSOD utterly destroying his]] [[FailureKnight self-esteem]] and must be slutshamed to no end because [[HotterAndSexier she is somewhat more openly fanservicy than the other girl]].
** With the resolution of the Greece Arc a lot of this has died down, with large parts of the fandom picking sides on the Hinagiku/Hayate/Athena LoveTriangle, thanks in part to the reveal that [[spoiler: Hina has a past with Athena too, Hayate still had feelings for Athena (which he told Hina no less), but was ultimately rejected before finally revealing that Athena was planning on coming back to Japan after all - even giving Nagi the empty box for the ring Hayate gave her as kids which many saw as a direct challenge]].
** The flames rose up again with the introduction of Ruka into the mix, some seeing her as a refreshing change of pace with her forwardness while others saw her development as rushed since she didn't take the time to get to know him that the other girls did. Then there was the [[spoiler:promise to make him marry her if she won the manga competition with Nagi]]. That...didn't go over well with many. By now, the forums are still largely Hinagiku vs. Athena (with a small amount opting for the OneTrueThreesome) and the much smaller groups who support him with Nagi or want Ruka to return.
* The ''Manga/{{Hellsing}}'' fandom is usually divided over Alucard/Integra vs. Alucard/Seras vs. [[FanNickname Girlycard]]/Walter vs. Integra/Seras vs...you get the idea.
** The whole Alucard/Integra vs. Alucard/(insert other character here) wars is taken to an even further extent when one takes [[WordOfGod ot3f Kouta Hirano]] into consideration. Those who support the former pairing point to evidence that there's some sort of hidden romantic attitudes/sexual tension between the two. Those who support the latter pairing point out that the relationship between Alucard and Integra is purely "Master and Servant". And then there are those who believe the relationship is purely ambiguous...yeah...
*** The issue was that Hirano's statement about the relationship was given ''five years'' before the manga concluded as an answer to a person who asked ''how far will it go'', a question that he was nervous to answer (like he would spoil his ending where [[spoiler:Alucard returns/isn't dead]]). He has always been ''very'' enthusiastic and supportive about Alucard/Integra (and Pip/Seras) with cover art, complimenting Alucard/Integra Japanese pairing fansites with sketches (before 2chan started vicious wank about him that drove him off the internet), keeping exclusively romantic cosplay pictures of them in his camera during his travels, and making gag fanservice goodies for fans in Comiket. Somebody should ask him now that everything is over.
** There's also Major/Integra or Maxwell/Integra vs. Alucard/Integra and Pip/Seras vs. other Seras pairings. Not in the Japanese/Chinese/Korean fandoms, however; they seem to be generally chill about pairings and shipping in general.
* ''Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowers'': Of course, when you've got a massive cast, a fair amount of ShipTease, and a distinct lack of {{Official Couple}}s, you can justify pretty much ''any'' pairing under the sun. The result is that people who ship Nation X with Nation Y will find themselves at odds with those who ship either X or Y with another character. Has it's own page [[ShipToShipCombat/HetaliaAxisPowers here]] for specific examples.
* ''VisualNovel/HigurashiWhenTheyCry'':
** Rika/Hanyuu vs Rika/Satoko vs Rika/Keiichi vs Keiichi/Satoko vs Akasaka/Rika.
** The most obvious is Keiichi/Rena vs Keiichi/Mion. For some reason, Keiichi/Rena was more popular in the early days of the fandom (prior to ''Kai'' finishing), but now Keiichi/Mion is. Post-''Kai'' anime {{OVA}}s seem to be having a field day with the Rena-Keiichi-Mion love triangle. This has only added fuel to the shipping war flames. There are, however, many who just opt to [=OT3=] them.
* ''Manga/HikariNoDensetsu'': Hikari/Takaaki and Hikari/Mao, especially since [[spoiler: the manga makes Mao her love interest and the anime makes Takaaki her love interest]].
* In the original ''VideoGame/InazumaEleven'', a number of possible romantic teases where put into the original series, although no actual couples ever became canon (unless you count Rika's one sided love arch). Fast forward to ''Inazuma Eleven Go'' however, where the original cast are now all adults, and it's revealed that original series protaganist Endou Mamoru is going to appear as a married man. Many debates erupted all over the place about who his wife was going to be, until it was reveled to be Natsumi Raimon. ...This was controversial, to say the least, and enraged fans went onto the forums, Tumblr, and other such places, to express their disgust at such a choice. Many arguments ensued between the different sides, the side that supported the ship or didn't see what the big deal was VS those who apposed the ship completely. Most of the complaints by those who disliked the ship revolved around how it seemed out of nowhere, and left loose ends untied. Those who stick up for the pairing point out however, that it wasn't out of nowhere, the same logic applies no matter who you pair him up with, and that those who are complaining are just butthurt that their ship didn't become canon. Most people agree on the fact that the fandom would have split no matter what ship it had been, so it wasn't specifically the ship itself that was the problem however, and despite the complaints they kept Endou and Natsumi as the canon pairing in the anime.
* ''Manga/InuYasha'':
** The fandom is more or less evenly divided between fans who think that Kagome is an abusive [[TheScrappy Scrappy]] whose love for [=InuYasha=] isn't nearly as true as that of tragic paragon Kikyo, and fans who think that Kikyo is a psycho ex standing in the way of [=InuYasha=] and Kagome's true redeeming love. Never mind that one is the reincarnation of the other, and thus the question is less "who" than it is "when".
** Also, [[WifeHusbandry Sesshomaru/Rin]] vs. [[ImpliedLoveInterest Sesshomaru/Kagura]] vs.[[PuppyLove Kohaku/Rin]], and Sesshomaru/Kagome vs. [=InuYasha=]/Kagome.
** Sesshomaru-related ShipToShipCombat intensified further when the [[SequelInAnotherMedium anime sequel]] ''Anime/YashahimePrincessHalfDemon'' revealed that Sesshomaru has [[SpinOffspring two half-demon daughters]] with no mother initially announced. Most fans viewed Rin as the likeliest candidate for the mother, which reignited bitter debates between Sesshomaru/Rin fans and anti-Sesshomaru/Rin fans over whether or not Sesshomaru/Rin becoming canon would be glorifying WifeHusbandry. [[spoiler:When episode 15 confirmed that Rin was indeed the mother of Sesshomaru's daughters, the flames surrounding the fandom could be seen from orbit.]]
* ''Toys/{{Jewelpet}}'' has a pretty minuscule fandom, so for the most part they're polite about this.
** For a franchise-wide example, there are people who like Ruby/Granite and others who wish Ruby had stuck with Tour.
** ''Anime/LadyJewelpet'' is the most romance-focused season in the anime series, and right out of the gate it presents viewers with four girls (Momona, Lillian, Mizuki and Charon) and four boys (Cayenne, Romeo, Soarer and Levin) with promises that they'll all be hooked up by the end. When the show was very new, the ideal pairing combinations were hotly debated, and it was complicated by the fact that Cayenne looks like Momona's cousin and is the brother of Lillian. Later they introduced two other characters of each gender, Miura and Elena, complicating things further as Cayenne graduated and ended up spending a lot of time with Elena while Miura flirted with Momona in his absence. While in the end [[spoiler:Momona and Cayenne]] end up together, there are still people who wish Momona had gone with Miura or Romeo (another big contender).
*** Some people prefer [[LesYay Momona/Lillian]] and are convinced that Lillian is much better suited for her than Cayenne, Romeo or Miura, but given the show it was glaringly obvious that wasn't going to pan out.
* The ''Manga/JojosBizarreAdventure'' fandom used to be rather peaceful about it, despite all the possible HoYay combinations that could potentially clash. The keyword is: '''used to be'''. The fourth part, ''Manga/JojosBizarreAdventureDiamondIsUnbreakable'', has seen extremely ugly battles between Josuke/Okuyasu and Josuke/Rohan shippers, with Josuke/Okuyasu shippers accusing the Josuke/Rohan fans of being "pedophilia/ephebophilia supporters" since Josuke is a highschooler and Rohan is a young adult, while Josuke/Rohan fans claim that such detractors cannot distinguish fiction from reality and call them delusional. Others straight up don't like Josuke/Rohan as the two tend to bicker a lot in the part.
* ''Anime/KillLaKill'':
** [[PseudoRomanticFriendship Ryuko x Mako]] vs. [[FoeYayShipping Ryuko x Satsuki]]. Both ships were extremely popular during the series original run. While the former's fate was left ambiguous, the latter fared [[ShipSinking much less well.]] The roots of Ryuko/Satsuki's death as a ship were planted in Episode 16 when a [[spoiler: [[ParentalIncest key reason for Satsuki's villainous nature]]]] was revealed. And said reason made people feel unsure about portraying her in romantic relationships (especially with [[spoiler: other women]]). Then Episode 18 revealed that [[spoiler: Satsuki and Ryuko are siblings.]] Combine the implications of those two revelations, and a fair amount of people [[AbandonShipping abandoned]] [[spoiler:Ryuko x Sastuki]]. Of course, [[IncestYayShipping others did not]].
** [[HugeGuyTinyGirl Ira/Mako]] became a popular ship after the Naturals Election. To put it lightly, the disagreements between Ryuko/Mako and Ira/Mako in particular are... not pretty. ''Especially'' after the series ended with [[spoiler:Ryuko and Mako going on a date, and Mako even kissing her... but then the epilogue shows Satsuki tagging along, and then it cuts to a nervous Gamagoori dressed in a suit holding flowers with Mako approaching.]] The amount of bile between the two factions exploded, primarily driven by HetIsEw.
** And then there are those that ship Ryuko and Satsuki with often humanized versions of their [[CargoShip Kamui]] which either gets them derided or praised by other fans of the show for being a top tier, but popular, CrackShip.
* ''Manga/KurokosBasketball'':
** Ao-Kuro shippers (Aomine x Kuroko) against Kaga-Kuro shippers (Kagami x Kuroko). Aomine and Kagami are very similar in many ways, both being Kuroko's past and present 'Light' respectively. More often than not, Kaga-Kuro fanfic will usually portray Aomine as an antagonist, and vice versa for AoKuro fanfics.
** Momo-Kuro (Momoi x Kuroko) against Ao-Momoi (Aomine x Momoi). Momoi has a heavy crush on Kuroko since their middle school times, but chose to go with Aomine to Touou high-school to take care of him instead ('childhood friend's duty' as noted by Momoi). This causes fans to argue whether Momoi's feelings for Aomine is purely platonic or not. Plus, Aomine once mentioned that he likes "women with big boobs", which Momoi clearly has. One of the end cards in the anime which showed Momoi lying down with Aomine doesn't help either, it was a blatant ShipTease by the animators, leading fans to question their relationships even more.
** Ao-Momoi vs Ao-Kuro. Moments after the end-card was shown, a fan-edited version replacing Momoi with Kuroko was instantly uploaded to the internet.
* While ''Anime/LittleWitchAcademia2017'' ended up [[NoHuggingNoKissing not having any romance]], it still featured a lot of ShipTease between [[TheHero Akko]] and [[DefrostingIceQueen Diana]] and between Akko and [[BlueBlood Andrew]] which caused both ships to cement themselves as the most popular in the fandom. However, Diana/Akko is ''the'' FanPreferredCouple, and has been since the original short films with with Andew/Akko as a very distant second. To say that the two sides don't get along is an understatement, with {{Yuri Fan}}s that make up the Diakko fandom either ignoring or hating on Andrew for being male in a show about witches while Ankko fans tend to relegate Diana to the background. Ironically, the most common OneTrueThreesome of Akko/Andrew/Diana appears to be a fandom of its own as Diakko and Ankko fans both can't stand sharing Akko.
** Before the series aired, which introduced Andrew and ramped up the teasing between Akko and Diana, there was some conflict between Sucy/Akko and Diana/Akko shippers too.
* ''Manga/LoveHina'': Put a Motoko/Keitaro and a Naru/Keitaro shipper in the same room. There '''will''' be blood. And don't add a Shinobu/Keitaro shipper. You risk getting an EarthShatteringKaboom right in your face. Then bring in a Mutsumi/Keitaro shipper. '''Say your prayers, everyone.'''
* ''Manga/LuckyStar'': The Konata/Kagami army vs. the smaller but equally hardcore Konata/Miyuki camp, even though this anime spends much of its time ''satirizing'' anime tropes and conventions. Oh, the irony.
* ''Franchise/LyricalNanoha'': The battles between the Nanoha/Fate and Nanoha/Yuuno factions, which is not helped by the creators knowing about it and fueling both sides with loads of ShipTease to keep the flames burning. There even seems to be a division in the lesser ranks of the production themselves; for example the [[FourthWallMailSlot Megami Sound Stages]] seem to support Nanoha/Yuuno; while the actresses who play [[Creator/YukariTamura Nanoha]] and [[Creator/NanaMizuki Fate]] are convinced they're a couple. These flames, however, while apparently violent, tend to be pretty friendly overall (perhaps due to the theme of the show itself), and people who take it as SeriousBusiness are routinely mocked in the fandom.
** Nanoha/Chrono was a third fleet in the running for a long time, too. You should have ''seen'' the looks of disbelief when the authors [[ShipSinking sank]] the possibility of Chrono/Nanoha or Chrono/Fate by pairing him up with [[BridgeBunnies Amy]] and making his mother [[LikeBrotherAndSister adopt Fate]] (not that this last one [[NotBloodSiblings would stop some people]], of course). At least the shippers of that have ''some'' comfort: it's canon in ''VisualNovel/TriangleHeart3SweetSongsForever'', in which neither Yuuno, Fate nor Amy exist.
** Anyone who spends time on the [=AnimeSuki=] Forum learns about the historic and brutal [[MemeticMutation 300 vs. Legion]] FlameWar. The supporters of [=NanoFate=] shipping called themselves Legion due to their [[YuriFan sheer numbers]], while [=YuuNano=] shippers called themselves 300 [[Administrivia/NotSelfExplanatory since]] they're so few.
** There's been a massive but short-lived second war between the Moderate ([[ShapedLikeItself Which is moderate-sized]]) and Militant Faction ([[TheLegionsOfHell which is growing in size beyond recognition]]). Militant Faction (in their own words) forced everyone to bow down and hail [=NanoFate=] as absolute canon, killing any other ship between one of the two character with another suitor and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking bash Yuuno for trivial/unclear reasons]]. Nowadays, Animesuki consists almost solely of the aforementioned Moderate faction ([[NoodleIncident somehow being able to constantly repel invaders swiftly and decisively and bolster their numbers in the process]]), while the Militants flock to Nanofate.us and Nanochan.
* Given that {{Love Triangle}}s are a staple of ''Anime/{{Macross}}'', this was inevitable:
** ''Anime/MacrossFrontier'' fandom has fighting between those who want Alto to end up with Sheryl Nome (the accomplished star), or with Ranka Lee (the {{Moe}} starlet). Naturally, this irks the fans who are in it for the HumongousMecha, the story or the music, or some combination thereof, as one anonymous 4Chan user put it: "This kind of ship-to-ship combat doesn't belong on /m/!"
*** More interesting is that while all ''Macross'' series have love triangles, this one is especially complicated since there is some subtext between [[LesYay Ranka and Sheryl]] and even some scenes that can imply a [[OT3 threesome end]]. So the shipping war is actually between Ranka/Alto, Sheryl/Alto, Sheryl/Ranka and Ranka/Alto/Sheryl.
** The fandom for the original ''Anime/SuperDimensionFortressMacross'' had plenty of this too. Replace "the accomplished star" with "the BrokenBird BridgeBunny" (Misa), and the "moe starlet" with "the ChineseGirl that became a rising IdolSinger" (Minmay) and BRACE YOURSELF for the Hikaru/Misa fans going absolutely BERSERK at the mere mention of Minmay, bashing her and falsely accusing her of being a slut who played with Hikaru's feelings since the beginning (despite how she has problems of her own) and who is oh-so inferior to the Ultra Mature And Powerful Strong Woman Misa (despite Misa being much more complex than that).
** Downplayed in ''Anime/MacrossDelta'' where you got Hayate/Frejya shippers and Hayate/Mirage. Though it's obvious that Hayate has more scenes with Frejya than with Mirage, many Hayate/Mirage shippers are still determined that the ship will still sail despite the lack of ShipTease and even pointed out that [[spoiler:Frejya might not last long after she noticed that her singing is affecting Hayate and she herself is slowly dying]]. Meanwhile, Hayate/Freyja shippers find that Hayate/Mirage is a lost cause because there's not enough scenes for Hayate and Mirage to be a couple. Though the shipping wars is not too extreme like the other Macross shows, both sides agreed that the ''Delta'''s LoveTriangle aspect is undeveloped due to ExecutiveMeddling. In the finale, [[spoiler:Hayate chooses Frejya despite Mirage's confession]] and many Hayate/Freyja can't help but feel sorry that for the Hayate/Mirage shippers.
* Never EVER ask ''Anime/{{Madlax}}'' fans who is a better love interest for Madlax. If you pick [[CoolBigSis Vanessa]], you'll be harshly told that [[spoiler:she's dead]] so she shouldn't really count. If you pick [[DarkActionGirl Limelda]], people will scream at you that she's an icky PsychoLesbian who [[spoiler:killed Vanessa]] and doesn't deserve Madlax.
* ''Manga/MagiLabyrinthOfMagic'':
** Sinja (Sinbad x Ja'far) shippers versus Sinju (Sinbad x Judar) shippers. Fanart of Sinbad often features either Ja'far or Judar as his romantic interest. While Sinbad's relationship with Judar is more a case of FoeYayShipping as with Ja'far, both ships are more or less equal in power.
** There's people out there that would prefer see Morgiana with Hakuryuu rather than Alibaba despite canonical evidence that shows she likes the latter...
** Also, if you support Kougyoku's crush on Sinbad, you might be marked for a '''very''' painful death.
* ''Literature/MariaWatchesOverUs'' started getting a lot of this as older characters graduated and were replaced with new girls:
** Yumi/Sachiko was always paired up against Yumi/Sei, with Sachiko being Yumi's ImpliedLoveInterest and Sei openly expressing affection towards Yumi and being somewhat perverted towards her, but Touko's introduction as Yumi's kouhai really caused a ship war.
** Similarly fans loved Sei's and Shimako's bond but then Sei went off to college and Noriko was introduced. Shipping debates went off on whether Shimako should wait for Sei or if she should pair up with Noriko, made even worse when Sei/Youko fans took the opportunity to have the two get together in college.
* In the ''Anime/{{Mazinger}}'' universe fandom you find two kind of people: those that think that ''[[Anime/MazingerZ Kouji Kabuto]]'' was in love with Sayaka Yumi, and those that think that he barely cared for her like a friend (Sayaka has always been his OfficialCouple or at the very least ImpliedLoveInterest, but you talk about facts to a shipper) and he paid more attention to any other woman that showed up in the series (Misato, Erika, Minerva...). ''[[Anime/UFORoboGrendizer Kouji/Maria]]'' are the largest faction of the second group by far, due to the sheer amount of people watched ''Grendizer'' first. And then you have the people who ships Sayaka with Boss, or the arguments among Duke/Hikaru and Duke/Rubina shippers. However, debates between shippers are refreshingly civil and without mud-slinging.
* Beware of the ''Literature/MyNextLifeAsAVillainessAllRoutesLeadToDoom'' fandom. As a reverse harem series with several interesting potential partners for Catarina, the arguments can get messy. As Catarina has both male and female admirers, the war between het and yuri shippers runs as hot as one might expect, and Geordo and Keith both specifically attract a fair amount of both defenders and haters; the former is Catarina's legal fiance and the latter is her [[NotBloodSiblings adopted brother]] (which carries much different connotations in Japan and America).
* The ''Manga/MyHeroAcademia'' fandom, infamous for its GottaShipEmAll status has a lot of arguments over shipping, particularly anything with Midoriya, who is shipped with pretty much everyone, but the most prominent are probably Midoriya/Todoroki, Midoriya/Uraraka, Midoriya/Bakugou, etc. The latter of the three gets a lot of criticism because Bakugou was Midoriya's former bully. There's also a lot of bickering between Midoriya/Todoroki and Todoroki/Momo shippers. Bakugou/Uraraka is a popular ship as well, with it not only pitted against Bakugou/Deku, but Bakugou/Kirishima as well. And as if the circle couldn't go further, Bakugou/Kirishima fans tend not to get along with Kirishima/Mina fans.
** Outside of the protagonists, there are aplenty of ships that dislike the other. There’s Jirō/Yaoyorozu and Kaminari/Jirō, with the former believing Jirō is by fan speculation a lesbian and the latter either saying Kaminari and Jirō are closer or acting as the middleman and making Jirō bisexual. Then there’s the well-known clash between Eraserhead/Ms. Joke with Eraser Head/Present Mic, not to mention Eraserhead with All Might and Eraser Head/Midnight into the mix. Hawks is also a pretty popularly shipped character, either with Dabi or Endeavor. The Hawks/Dabi fandom usually call out Endeavor’s past romantic dilemma, and stating Endeavor is too undeserving for a second relationship and/or that the ship has an uncomfortable age gap since Hawks is the same age as Endeavor's second-oldest child, while the Endeavor/Hawks fandom often states that neither party of the Hawks/Dabi ship fully trusted each other. In the Paranormal Liberation War Arc [[spoiler:Hawks starts to show his true colors to the PLF and Dabi is quick to burn Hawks for killing Twice. Endhawks fans claim this pretty much invalidated the ship, while Dabihawks fans ended up [[FoeYayShipping shipping it harder]].]]
* ''Anime/NagiAsuALullInTheSea''. Since it is a LoveDodecahedron expect this to happen. [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Hikari/Manaka]], Hikari/Miuna and [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Hikari/Chisaki]] is one of them. And don't even start with Tsumugu/Chisaki, [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Kaname/Chisaki]] and Kaname/Sayu.
* ''Franchise/{{Naruto}}'':
** ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' had a perfect storm of many, many popular pairings involving many characters, and very subdued and ambiguous romantic development over a long period of time. It got very bloody as relationships developed. Even after the series ended and {{canon}} was decided, you can still see scuffles between any combination of [[PatientChildhoodLoveInterest Naruto/Hinata]], [[HoYay Naruto/Sasuke]], [[BelligerentSexualTension Naruto/Sakura]], and [[LoveMartyr Sasuke/Sakura]]. Even smaller pairings involving more minor characters can go to war, like the battles among [[OppositesAttract Sai/Ino]], [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Shikamaru/Ino]], and [[BelligerentSexualTension Shikamaru/Temari]].
** It's unlikely that ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'' will ever have the wild shipping combat that its predecessor has, but even early into its run, the Shipping Wars are beginning. Prior to the anime's start, fans were already shipping the kids, but it was civil. The main pairing was Boruto/Sarada due to Sarada following Boruto around in the manga Epilogue. The first episode of the anime introduced Sumire, a Hinata-like girl who instantly [[LikeParentLikeSpouse was shipped with Boruto]]. She's had a [[DieForOurShip hard time with BoruSara fans]]. While Boruto/Sumire fans are still dwarfed by the [=BoruSara=] supports, two factors made the war less one-sided: [[spoiler:Sumire's [[TykeBomb background]] making it clear she's more than just Hinata clone she first seemed, and the manga making it overt that Sumire ''does'' have romantic feelings for Boruto, feelings that have been acknowledged by other characters]].
* As a series with a boy with 31 girls as his harem, ''Manga/NegimaMagisterNegiMagi'' is bound to have this. Even though Asuna/Negi and Nodoka/Negi are the two favorites, Chisame/Negi got more popular later on, having at least one in-universe endorser, rabid fans who tout it as if it was already canon and, [[HilariousInHindsight funny enough]], [[spoiler:turned out to actually be canon]]. However, most of the fights do get ameliorated, mainly because there is one shipping that everyone can agree on: Setsuna/Konoka. God help those who go against this sacred pairing.
** Apparently, ''Manga/UQHolder'' kinda made it worse (or better, depending on taste:) [[spoiler:apart from Negi/Chisame becoming canon Negima-wise, the UQ canon's Negi/Eva pairing took center stage.]] And that is not even counting the pairings for Negi's grandson Touta who, as of late has garnered his own; the focus are centered more on Touta/Eva, Touta/Kuromaru, and Touta/Kirie, [[spoiler:the later two mirroring the Setsuna/Konoka and Negi/Chisame pairings, respectively to a certain extent.]]
* ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'' is abundant with this, though of a more subtle and insidious brand than any of those above. There is great mutual hostility between the [[IncestYayShipping Rei/Shinji]] shippers, and the [[SlapSlapKiss Asuka/Shinji]] shippers, which isn't helped by the fact that Asuka and Rei pretty much hate each other in canon. There are also the more controversial Misato/Shinji shippers, the [[HoYay Kaworu/Shinji]] shippers, and the occasional fans of Mana Kirishima. Thanks to the [[MindScrew ambiguity]] of the series, each shipper has their own [[AlternateCharacterInterpretation personal character interpretation]] which each defends with fanatical fervor even against others within the same shipping ''subset.''
** The fact that there are several AlternateContinuity settings to work with can complicate matters even further.
** The ''Anime/RebuildOfEvangelion'' films have also helped reignite the debate by giving a new continuity to work with. The ShipTease between Shinji and Rei made many shippers jumping the gun and declaring them OfficialCouple, whereas Shinji/Asuka supporters argued that Shinji/Asuka got plenty ShipTease too, and the Rei/Shinji couple was doomed anyway because would inevitably would be revealed that [[spoiler:Rei has been built with the DNA of Shinji's mother Yui]] just like in the original series and that she and Shinji are simply confused about the type of love they have for each other. Finally [[WhamEpisode Evangelion]] [[DarkerAndEdgier 3.0]] wrote off Shinji/Rei, and now the fight boils down between the Shinji/Asuka fans and [[LesYay Mari/Asuka]] shippers, apart from giving the [[HoYay Kaworu/Shinji]] pairing more ground. However, ''3.0 + 1.01'' torpedoed all the ships and [[spoiler:have Shinji settle with Mari]], of all people, despite the minimal screentime together in the entire movie. Fans of the sunken ships interpret this as Hideaki Anno giving the middle finger to the franchise's intense shipping war.
* ''Manga/{{Nisekoi}}'' is one of the most prominent examples in recent history. Any thread about the series on ''any'' fansite can be derailed [[FlameWar into a giant inferno]] by posting six simple words: "Who should Raku end up with?" The Raku/[[{{Tsundere}} Chitoge]], Raku/[[YamatoNadeshiko Onodera]] and Raku/[[{{Yandere}} Marika]] shippers WILL BE AT EACH OTHERS' THROATS. And that's not even counting those who ship Raku with [[ActionGirl Tsugumi]], [[TokenMiniMoe Haru]], [[CoolBigSis Yui]], [[LittleMissSnarker Ruri]], [[HoYay Shuu]], [[CrackPairing Claude, Kyoko-sensei...]]
** There was also the odd case of Shuu/Ruri, where the most heated arguments were between fans who loved the ship and the ShipTease and those who hated it and denied there was any teasing at all. When the ShipTease later in the series was too overt to deny, the arguments then focused on how Shuu didn't "deserve" Ruri. There didn't always have to be a rival ship (though sometimes Raku/Ruri and Raku/Shuu were invoked), and the focus seemed to be more on just not letting Ruri end up with ''him''.
* ''Manga/OnePiece'', as a NoHuggingNoKissing series, doesn't have that many shippers. However, it is full of deep bonds between characters and sometimes vague interaction between them that could serve as a basis for a potential relationship. Some of the biggest conflicts between the fandom are:
** Who [[ChasteHero Luffy]] should end up with: Nami, the brave navigator of his crew, with whom he shares a very deep bond which can be seen as romantic or not with ease -- and not to mention Nami seems to be quite focused on other matters rather than whether Luffy will bone her or not. Or Boa Hancock, empress of Amazon Lily Island who fell madly in love with him, although her displays of affection are PlayedForLaughs and while Luffy is grateful for her help during the Marineford arc, he explicitly stated that "he wasn't going to marry her". Things cooled off, until Hancock returned in Wano {{Filler}} and [[FallingIntoHisArms had a moment]] with Luffy, the shipping combat began again.
** Of course there is also a lot of disagreement on the topic of who Nami herself should be with: the aforementioned airhead of a captain Luffy, [[ChivalrousPervert girl-crazy]] cook Sanji or the stoic, serious swordsman Zoro.
** Luffy/Nami and Sanji/Nami shippers got their ''most heated'' around the Zou and Whole Cake Island arcs (since special focus was given Luffy, Nami and Sanji) like when Nami tearfully hugs Luffy tightly when she meets him again... ''but she's crying over Sanji'' ('''cue arguments'''). Then, in Whole Cake Island Pudding got in involved as Sanji LoveInterest bride which was encouraging to Luffy/Nami fans and annoyed Sanji/Nami fans [[spoiler: then it was revealed Pudding was EvilAllAlong which made Sanji/Nami shippers happy at the apparent Sanji/Pudding ShipSink. Then at the Tea Party, Pudding actually falls in love with Sanji after he compliments her third eye which made it seem like the ship was rekindled especially since Sanji saved Pudding despite her trying to kill him. Then in another twist Sanji [[FallingIntoHisArms has a big]] ShipTease moment with Nami ''right in front of Pudding'' who is left behind, which pissed off both Sanji/Pudding and Luffy/Nami fans. Then in one more twist from Oda (who you'd think was doing this intenionally at this point) Pudding kisses Sanji before the arc ends, however Pudding also takes Sanji's memories away and flees while Sanji leaves her to save Luffy. Not mention the fight between Luffy and Sanji where the latter beat up the former in front of Nami [[FakeDefector as an act]] for his family, Luffy/Nami shippers were furious at Sanji considering it a betrayal and the slap Nami gave Sanji as validation of the ship sink between Nami and Sanji. When Nami forgives Sanji later on, Luffy/Nami shippers were bitter about it, saying Sanji didn't deserve it.]] Ironically the Zoro/Nami fans have died down through all this, mainly due to Nami not having any real screen time with Zoro.
*** Luffy/Nami fans also accuse [[Creator/ToeiAnimation Toei]] of favouritism since they added Sanji/Nami moments to Zou, Whole Cake Island and even Wano. Though that's an unfair accusation since Toei produced plenty of Luffy/Nami moments as well like in [[Recap/OnePieceTVSP10AdventureOfNebulandia Adventure of Nebulandia]] and ''Anime/OnePieceFilmGold''.
** Robin also gets some attention from shippers, albeit in her case it is mostly limited to whether she is better fit for TeamDad shipwright Franky or Zoro.
** There is also a pretty big following for the coupling of [[HoYay Sanji and Zoro,]] because of their constant married-couple-like bickering, although these people mostly don't involve in arguments over other pairings for [[CrackPairing understandable reasons...]]
*** Also, there's a small but very loyal corner of Zoro/Luffy shippers who want their own share of deep and mutual trust to go beyond. And not all of them get along with other Luffy-shipping fans.
* The Ship-To-Ship Combat in ''Literature/{{Oreimo}}'' is mostly between the IncestSubtext fans who ship Kyousuke and his sister Kirino and the NoYay fans. Among the NoYay fans, there are fans for Kyousuke-[[UnluckyChildhoodFriend Manami]] (who consider her the most sane and normal of the choices) against fans for Kyousuke-Kuroneko/Ayase/other girls (who are seen as the more interesting choices).
* The ''Manga/OuranHighSchoolHostClub'' fandom has conflict between the canon pairing Tamaki/Haruhi and other pairings, particularly Hikaru/Haruhi, but Kyoya/Haruhi is also popular. Some even support the {{twincest}} Hikaru/Kaoru pairing.
* After episode 19 of ''Anime/{{Penguindrum}}'', there has been some seriously fierce ship wars between fans of Kanba/Himari, Shouma/Ringo and [[spoiler:Shouma/Himari]]. It's extremely complicated to explain due to how much of a MindScrew the series is, but basically it's like this: the [[spoiler:third]] ship didn't have much ShipTease until the aforementioned episode, and since it goes between the other two, the fans of said "other couples" were seriously thrown off and started warring against it due to possible ShipSinking. The [[spoiler:Kanba/Himari]] supporters are '''specially'' loud in their displeasure, due to the BrokenBase factor in regards to [[spoiler:Kanba the MemeticBadass]] and [[spoiler:Shouma being NotBasassEnoughForFans]]; the other "faction" mainly tends to panic about the possible consequences, but generally don't bash [[spoiler:Shouma]].
* ''Anime/Persona4TheAnimation'': After episodes 9 and 10 (the ones dealing with [[{{Kawaiiko}} Rise]] [[IdolSinger Kujikawa]]), the shippers went rather wild: Rise/Narukami fans (the MC is named Yuu Narukami in the anime continuity) rubbed the buttloads of ShipTease they got in the faces of '''everyone''' and claimed [[MemeticMutation "RISE END CONFIRMED!"]] in many forums and ImageBoards (specially on Website/FourChan). Which obviously didn't go well with the [[KickChick Chie]]/Narukami and the [[YamatoNadeshiko Yukiko]]/Narukami fans -- ''specially'' the Yukiko/Narukami shippers, since Yukiko ''seemed'' to be the one favored until then. And many panicked in the moment [[{{Bokukko}} Naoto]] sorta joined in...
** And then it was massively subverted. At least on Website/FourChan, two opinions ended up overriding the others: that the HoYay between Narukami and [[TheLancer Yousuke]] was totally there ([[MemeticMutation "YOUSUKE END CONFIRMED!"]]), and that [[FanNickname Brotag]] '''would get everyone laid.'''
* In ''Literature/ThePetGirlOfSakurasou'', should [[NiceGuy Sorata]] go with [[IdiotSavant Mashiro]] or [[{{Workaholic}} Nanami]]? The competition is tight.
* ''Anime/PokemonTheSeries'':
** What is generally considered the bloodiest ship war ever took place in this fandom. The main debate seems to be what combination of the constantly-fluctuating PowerTrio should hook up; there's at least thirty possible sides, each with a knife to the throat of the others. Also, there's the Rocketshipping (Jessie/James) debate, although there's no one else to pair them up with - Anti-Rocketshippers simply hold the opinion they're not interested in each other (and usually that James is gay).
** The main war was between Pokéshippers (pairing up Ash/Satoshi and Misty/Kasumi) and Palletshippers (Ash/Satoshi and Gary/Shigeru).
** The "official" [[http://shipping.bulbagarden.net/ list of named ships]] for the fandom ''literally'' has OverNineThousand entries.
** Perhaps the fanatical nature of Ship-to-Ship Combat is best exemplified by the fact that the [[http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Shipping:History_of_Pokemon_shipping Ship War]] can be described as HAVING TREATIES and ''civil wars''. There are times to just give up, fanboys AND fangirls.
** Even to this day, it still happens. With every season introducing new female companions his age, each brings a new wave of the fanbase shipping her with Satoshi/Ash and accepting no substitutes. We have Pokéshippers (Satoshi/Ash and Kasumi/Misty), Advanceshippers (Satoshi/Ash and Haruka/May), Pearlshippers (Satoshi/Ash and Hikari/Dawn), Negaishippers (Satoshi/Ash and Iris), Amourshippers (Satoshi/Ash and Serena), and Aureliashippers (Satoshi/Ash and Lillie). Negaishipping is the weakest of the six, while Pokéshipping and Amourshipping are the most prominent ones and have a bigger war going on than with the rest.
** Some of the uglier cases are of shippers who will wage war against ''all other people'' who are not in support of their ships--and this does not mean just people who ship other characters, but non-shippers and non-fans too. That is, they take up a WithUsOrAgainstUs stance: The entire human population who is not an ally is an enemy.
* ''Manga/ThePrinceOfTennis'' fandom is FULL of passive-aggressive fights because of its HoYay.
** The Tezuka x Fuji pairing is often bashed by fans who ship them with others, specially Fujicest and Atobe x Tezuka fans ([[spoiler: And it's made worse after Fuji and Tezuka DO get ShipTease in the ''manga'' itself -- apparently inspited by the anime subtext]]). Taka x Fuji fans are NOT innocent of this either, as sometimes Taka/Fuji fan corners are ''made'' of passive-aggressive jabs about how Tezu/Fuji fans are "only in for the pretty UNLIKE OUR MUCH DEEPER SHIP".
** The few Ryoma x Sakuno and An x Momoshiro fans are often automatically accused of being "homophobic" or "having the [[HetIsEw icky, useless girls take Ryoma away from Momo]]" by slash shippers... even if these "homophobes" ''do'' ship some slash couples alongside the het ones.
*** The HetIsEw factor gets even worse if you even ''mention'' the girls from the {{Dating Sim}}s. These stupid whores! They "straighten" super gay gay GAY characters with their evil vaginas and steal them from their "more deserving" male lovers, EWWWWWWW!
** Inui x Kaidoh fans bash Yanagi and the Inui x Yanagi pairing and fans, accusing Renji of being hateful and cruel towards Inui as well as a bad and abusive friend when they were younger;
** Sanada x Yukimura fans bash Atobe and say he's "stealing" Sanada from his beloved leader and ChildhoodFriend when he could have whoever else he wanted. Sanada x Atobe fans bash Yukimura and accuse him of being a self-absorbed verbal abuser who manipulates his "LoveMartyr" Sanada [[AllTakeAndNoGive into loving him for his own amusement.]]
* ''Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica'': [[LesYay Homura/Madoka vs. Mami/Madoka]] can get pretty bloody once or twice, and then there's quite the "potential" in Sayaka/Madoka vs. Sayaka/Kamijou, and let's not forget [[ScrewYourself Madoka/her long-haired self seen in the OP]]
** After episodes 7 and 8, a possible secondary ship war started among the Sayaka/Kyouko, Sayaka/Kamijou and Sayaka/Madoka groups. [[spoiler:With a huge side dish of Hitomi/Kamijou, or better said, [[DieForOurShip "HITOMI YOU WHORE, GET AWAY FROM SAYAKA'S MAN!"]].]]
** The STSC is notably absent between Mami/Kyouko and Mami/Madoka. [[spoiler:Even with the official description of Mami's hypothetical witch-form having representation of both Kyouko and Madoka in it.]]
** People who support Sayaka/Kyouko are not on good terms with [[Manga/PuellaMagiMadokaMagicaTheDifferentStory Mami/Kyouko shippers]] and they hate the fact that [[spoiler:Kyouko killing Oktavia (Sayaka's witch form) to save Mami from despair and ultimately leaving herself vulnerable to witch attack afterward]]. The feeling is mutual, as Mami/Kyouko shippers argued that Mami is the one who taught Kyouko everything she knew and [[DieForOurShip insisted that Sayaka is the third wheel]]. The existence of [[spoiler:Nagisa (Charlotte's human form)]] in canon storyline [[PairTheSpares managed to soften the shipping war between these two pairings]].
* Back in the early days of the Internet, the large and prolific ''Manga/RanmaOneHalf'' fanfic community engaged in a huge three-sided shipping war among the partisans of Ranma's three "official" fiancées. The {{flanderization}}, mischaracterization, recriminations, demonization, and outright nastiness still echoes through {{fanon}} more than a decade later.
** Mid-nineties Usenet group rec.arts.anime was once victim of the "Who is [[http://groups.google.com/group/alt.fan.r-takahashi/browse_frm/thread/48dd0d525f95c918/a197adb5bbee7a8a Ranma's Best Babe]]" thread, debating the merits of ''[=Ranma ½=]'''s rivals for the title. [[Roleplay/{{GRIT}} Eventually it degenerated into an actual, role-playing trench war that became a fixture on the newsgroup for over eight years]].
*** It got so silly that people actually accused a group called "The Defenders of the True Fiancée" of spreading viruses and hacking websites. One particularly notorious shipper even accused the animators of conspiring against his favorite character.
* ''Manga/Reborn2004'': Oddly averted. Everyone is free to ship whatever they like, and very few people would have a serious debate about it, since most people are multi-shippers. Considering [[LauncherOfAThousandShips Tsuna]] and the huge cast, it's not hard to see why. Although there seems to be opposition between Gokudera/Tsuna shippers and Yamamoto/Gokudera shippers.
* ''Manga/RurouniKenshin'' fandom has no shortage of shipping wars to decide who was/would be be better for Kenshin: Kaoru or Tomoe. Though they're usually one-sided: Tomoe wasn't introduced till the final arc of the manga and doesn't even show up in the anime (only the Tsuiokuhen OVA) [[spoiler:and is the tiniest bit ''dead'' by the time the main story starts]].
** Don't forget Shura, the Pirate Lady Kenshin meets. A smaller fanbase desperately wanted her to be with Kenshin.
** Megumi also became quite [[DieForOurShip the victim of ship-based bashing]]. Kaoru/Kenshin shippers did ''not'' take her [[TheTease teasing]] personality in stride as well as her open interest in Kenshin (which she didn't relinquish until the Kyoto arc), and accused her of being a whore who only wanted to get into Kenshin's hakama and hated Kaoru (despite Megumi being a CoolBigSis to Kaoru and doing what she could to help her when she had an HeroicBSOD). They mellowed out later and [[ShipMates started shipping her]] [[BelligerentSexualTension with]] [[BoisterousBruiser Sanosuke]] instead, and then Tomoe took her place as "Kaoru's love rival".
*** Very ironically, some rabid Sanosuke/Megumi did NOT take the apparition of [[BrokenBird Magdaria]] and the ShipTease she got with Sanosuke well ''at all'', and even [[spoiler: Magaria's death]] wasn't enough to shut them up. ("Weh weh, the bitch [[spoiler: is dead]] but Sano is so saaaad! Why did they create that bitch only to [[spoiler: get her killed]] and make Sano cryyyyy! WAHWAH!")
* ''Franchise/SailorMoon'': Considering the core cast contains no less then ten main characters, there are literally dozens of one-season villains and one-shot "best friends", and the two members of the most official couple have five or more suitors apiece - and there are several canons to the series - it's no wonder the franchise is a quagmire of ship related insanity. Specifically, the debates between Mamoru fans and Seiya fans can get really ugly. There's also the Uranus/Neptune shippers versus the "they're just close cousins!" sect... although that one is more a battle against outright lies (example: [[http://wikimoon.org/index.php?title=Prince_Uranus Prince Uranus]]) by fans who don't like same sex pairings.
** The release of ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal'' added more fuel to the fire. The [[spoiler:survival of Jadeite and Nephrite at the end of episodes 3 and 5 respectively]] as well as the bigger influence of the Shitennou as a whole in the plot has revived the once ''very'' ugly debate regarding [[spoiler:the scrapped manga subplot about the Shitennou and the Inner Senshi having romantic links]] and sent many LesYay fans and Kunzite/Zoisite shippers [[HetisEw into screaming fits.]] Things have only gotten worse after episode 10, with the fans throwing entitled tantrums at the revelation from Act 10 [[spoiler:about the past Senshi and the past Generals having had romances before everything went FromBadToWorse.]]
*** The Sen/Shi vs Kun/Zoi shipping wars are especially ugly. More extreme Kun/Zoi fans went into violent rages over the very ''possibility'' of them not being together, while extreme Sen/Shi fans would try to shut them up by claiming it could never be canon outside the 90s anime. Whether or not Kun/Zoi could have been a possibility in the manga is a hot topic thanks to differing scanslations of the Materials artbooks and [[WordOfDante what Kunzite and Zoisite's seiyuu had to say about it]] in an interview.
* ''Manga/SaintSeiya'': In the countries where it's most popular, there's usually ship wars that go way beyond the levels of verbal hate and acrimoniousness, often expanding itself into RealLife bashing.
** The more remarkable examples are the wars of [[{{het}} Het Yay]] fans (fueled by the massive creation of {{Relationship Sue}}s, since there's so few women in the cast) against HoYay fans and vice-versa. In several occasions the ship war went to extremes of public detracting of fanwork artists' personal lives, public menace of aggressions and even real legal offenses.
*** Not to mention how the fanatical {{Yaoi fangirl}}s mix this with NotBadassEnoughForFans, trying to erase and deny ANY kind of influence that the few girls in the cast had on the guys, either romantic or friendship-like, just because they think the girls are all weak and stupid and "not feminist enough to deserve being paired up." Shun/Hyoga shippers are really bad about it, bashing Princess Freya from the {{filler}} Asgard arc despite how much of a PluckyGirl she is and hissing at the mere mentions of Shun's UnluckyChildhoodFriend Jun. And the less said about their thoughts on Saori, the better.
** The HoYay fandom gets involved in several bitter ship wars within itself, most noticeably motivated by the debates of [[{{fanon}} "what should be the "right" guys to ship according to what we see"]] and "what guys are never acceptable to ship together". These can get very, very bloody: i.e. you do NOT go into the path of a Shiryu/Seiya fangirl and tell her Shiryu should go with Mu instead without expecting at least some snark, and at worst nonstop flames.
** The het side wasn't much better, to be honest. The Shaina/Seiya and Saori/Seiya shippers are horrifyingly cruel to each other and their characters: Shaina is "a stalker and a slutty bitch", Saori is "pathetic, a coward, and not feminist enough". They also like to bash the crap out of Miho despite how she, in practice, is put firmly in the UnluckyChildhoodFriend role.
* Mocked in ''Goku Manga/SayonaraZetsubouSensei'', being described as a "battle with no winners."
* ''VisualNovel/{{Shuffle}}'', dear God, ''SHUFFLE!''. The fiercest Ship-To-Ship Combat happens between the {{Instant|Fanclub}} [[SeriousBusiness Fanclubs]] ''Ai Ai Asa-senpai'' and ''Kitto Kitto Kaede-chan''.
** Generally, ''Ai Ai Asa-senpai'' members are the targets of an EnemyMine by all the other fanclubs, even going as far as to call [[GenkiGirl Asa]] a "selfish bitch."
* Amongst ''Manga/ShugoChara'' fans, there is definitely animosity between the Tadase/Amu and Ikuto/Amu factions, with the expected DieForOurShip mentalities.
* In the mid-Nineties, ''Manga/SlamDunk'' had huge ship wars. Asking a YaoiFangirl whether [[TheRival Rukawa]] should go with [[BoisterousBruiser Sakuragi]] or [[TheAce Sendoh]]; or whether Sendoh should go with Rukawa or with [[{{Tsundere}} Koshino]], was... well, '''''unsafe'''''. And 90% of yaoi fans had [[DieforOurShip nothing kind to say]] about Sakuragi's canon crush [[NiceGirl Haruko]]: either she was a dumb and ungrateful slut for being oblivious to Sakuragi's feelings for her because of course Sakuragi was owed vagina for liking him, or she was a Bad Role Model for little girls for [[SmittenTeenageGirl daring to have a crush on Rukawa]], even when [[SmittenTeenageGirl she]] was perfectly aware of [[CelebCrush her feelings being one-sided and hopeless.]]
* Back in the early years of the ''Literature/{{Slayers}}'' fandom, there were some pretty heated ship wars between Lina/Gourry and Lina/Zel shippers, made even more fun by ''Literature/LostUniverse'' with shared voice actors and character archetypes, not to mention {{fanon}} shared continuity. It's calmed down considerably since.
* ''Anime/SonicX'': Tails/Cosmo vs Tails/Cream. Fans are prepared to [[DieForOurShip kill the characters off]] to get their ship. In [[spoiler:Tails/Cream's]] case, this isn't necessary; [[spoiler:Cosmo died in the last episode]]. However, [[spoiler:Tails/Cosmo]] fans find ways to [[spoiler:return her to life]], often via [[spoiler:the seed Sonic found]]. This is illustrated in a somewhat disturbing manner [[http://ozz-the-wanderer.deviantart.com/art/Cream-and-Cosmo-ALS-colored-110928689 here]].
* Within the ''Manga/SoulEater'' fandom, you've got poor [[ObsessivelyOrganized Death The Kid]]. Should he end up with Maka? Chrona? [[HoYay Black*Star and/or Soul?]] Or, perhaps he should end up with either Liz or Patti (or both, due to Kid's love of symmetry)? You're pretty much in a metaphorical mine field with this one.
** There's also Soul/Maka VS Soul/Black*Star VS Soul/Blair.
** And, while we're on the subject of Maka, the most popular people to pair her up with are [[ImpliedLoveInterest Soul]], [[ShipsThatPassInTheNight Kid]], and [[FoeYayShipping Chrona]]. Fans often disagree over which one is the true OTP.
** Fans of Chrona/Maka are divided on [[AmbiguousGender whether it's]] ''male''Chrona/Maka or ''female''Chrona/Maka.
* Tamao and Yaya didn't have it easy despite a good army of shippers for their side for ''Literature/StrawberryPanic''. While the original vote was open-ended, the anime had the pairings settled as Nagisa with Shizuma and Hikari with Amane. And Tamao doesn't even have another girl to fall back on... talk about fighting for a sinking ship.
* The love triangle in ''Anime/TamakoMarket'' is especially debated because it's bisexual: Mochizou (male) and Midori (female) both like Tamako (female). Tamako/Midori [[ShipTease teasing]] caused many YuriGenre fans to flock to the series but many were hostile towards Mochizou, however oddly ''Midori'' received [[DieForOurShip most of the hate]] as she actively tried to get in the way of Mochizou liking Tamako. The ship wars died though with TheMovie, ''Tamako Love Story'', especially due to [[AdaptationDisplacement many fans not even seeing the series proper]]. [[spoiler:Mochizou and Tamako are the OfficialCouple. Midori/Tamako fans were upset at the ShipSinking but many were happy that Midori wasn't randomly paired with a boy, like what happens in many series]].
* ''Anime/TenchiMuyo'' has had several bloody ship wars that have been known to tear apart forum communities. Everyone has their favorite girl. Back in the day the major ship wars were between Tenchi/Ryoko and Tenchi/Ayeka fans, but as of late, Tenchi/Sasami fans have become more vocal. The fact that the series pretty much has a canon [[MarryThemAll Harem Ending]] has done little to quell the fury of the shippers who think Tenchi should end up with ''only'' their favorite girl.
* ''Anime/TigerAndBunny'' is mostly a peaceful fandom, but it's starting to show early symptoms of this since Kotetsu / [[OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent Karina]] and Kotetsu/[[IceKing Barnaby]] fans have been spotted fighting it out. Is Karina a [[NotBadassEnoughForFans "girly thus weak"]] little bitch who gets in between the oh so sacred HoYay between Kotetsu and Barnaby? Is Barnaby a selfish, immature JerkAss who treats Kotetsu like shit just to satisfy his ego - sooooo unlike the sweet, pretty Karina would? Be careful about expressing such thoughts...
* ''Manga/TsubasaReservoirChronicle'' fans tend to pick a side between Kurogane/Fay and Kurogane/Tomoyo. All of this is based on subtext (this is ''Creator/{{CLAMP}}'', after all), but DieForOurShip is common.
** There was also Kurogane/Fay and Chi/Fay, although the latter ship pretty much [[AbandonShipping died out]] later on
* ''Manga/VampireKnight'': Zero/Yuuki vs. Kaname/Yuuki in particular. Is Kaname a creepy [[spoiler:and incestuous]] FetishizedAbuser who wants to dominate Yuuki's life? Is Zero a wangsty moron who gets in between Kaname and Yuuki's True Love? Is Yuuki a "CanonSue", thus "undeserving" of both guys? This whole ship war between both ships is the reason some fans stopped reading the manga altogether.
* Even ''Manga/WanderingSon'''s normally calm fandom gets in on ship wars sometimes. The main issue is [[PlatonicLifePartners Nitori/Takatsuki]] vs [[OfficialCouple Nitori/Anna]] vs [[FanPreferredCouple Saori/Takatsuki]]. Nitori/Saori fans are never in on the wars because few fans ship it, despite Saori's unrequited love being a major part of her character. Nitori and Takatsuki has had a lot of fans since early on, made worse by the anime [[PromotedToLoveInterest upping]] the ShipTease, however their relationship is frequently debunked in-series and the two are portrayed as platonic. Many shippers consider Nitori's canon girlfriend Anna to have a [[SugarAndIcePersonality mean personality]] or just don't like her with Nitori. Saori/Takatsuki is a completely different bag of worms for having a huge amount of FoeRomanceSubtext, then later just ShipTease, but no one being able to tell [[PlatonicWritingRomanticReading how intentional]] it was. The anime caused [[FoeYayShipping Nitori/Doi]] to become a thing however more than a few fans were YaoiFangirls who don't [[MisaimedFandom even see Nitori as female]]. Other fans usually ignore the ship in debates because Doi is a [[TheBully bully]] to Nitori and Nitori has shown no interest in boys (besides Takatsuki for a while).
* In ''Manga/TheWorldGodOnlyKnows'', thanks to ''nine'' {{One True Pairing}}s and one canon CargoShip (as explained in the manga's [[YMMV/TheWorldGodOnlyKnows YMMV Page]]), [[AGodAmI Keima]] is somehow locked inside a 10-way tussle... until the author finally decided via [=FLAG=] 267 to [[ShipSinking sink all but one ship]] involved. Cue rabid fans who are not in favor of the [[spoiler:Keima/Chihiro]] pairing raging at the outcome, as evidenced by [[http://cdn.awwni.me/o96m.jpg this pic of comments]] from [[Website/FourChan /a/]]. (Content warning for 4chan being even nastier than usual, open at your own risk.)
%% * ''Manga/{{X1999}}'': [[http://www.moonpants.org/comics/fangirl.jpg Seishirou/Subaru vs. Subaru/Kamui]], [[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/583537/1/XMail anyone]]? In addition, Fuma/Kamui vs. Subaru/Kamui is a bloodbath in its own right.
* ''Manga/YamadaKunAndTheSevenWitches'' have two particularly large shipping factions - Yamada x Shiraishi (the OfficialCouple) and Yamada x Odagiri (Odagiri being Yamada's most serious suitor). The fact that the factions are almost the same size (if Odagiri has had much more or much less screen-time than usual, her faction tends to be a bit larger and more vocal, and the same goes for Shiraishi) can really make the shipping wars enduring. Yamada x Noa and [[HoYay Yamada x Miyamura]] also have some followers, and sometimes those will interfere in the war.
* ''Franchise/YuGiOh''
** ''Manga/YuGiOh'': Ship Atem and Yugi? Anzu is a brainless harridan. Ship [[FoeYayShipping Kaiba and Yugi?]] Jounouchi is a Token Homophobe for some [[FanWank stupid reason]]. Ship [[FoeYayShipping Kaiba and Jounouchi?]] Mai is a heartless slut. (Yes, this is a gross oversimplification.) The Atem/Yugi and Yugi/Anzu fans in particular seem to have it in for each other. [[OT3 Unless they choose door number three...]]
** ''Anime/YuGiOh5Ds'' Scoopshippers, take arms! Tonight, the Careshippers come! But THEY ARE NOT PREPARED!
** ''Anime/YuGiOhZEXAL''. Despite having characters' ages that even younger than the original series, managed to have even more than it. The main [[HoYay Ho Yays]] of Astral/Yuma, Shark/Yuma, Kaito/Yuma and Shingetsu[[spoiler:/Vector]]/Yuma take the cake.
%% *** On the other side of coin there is Yuma/Kotori, Yuma/Cathy, Yuma/Anna and Yuma/Rio.
%% *** Tetsuo/Rio and IV/Rio.
** ''Anime/YuGiOhArcV'' actually avoided most of the shipping wars. Due to the counterparts having strong ShipTease with Yuya and Yuzu getting the most. Season 1 actually had decent amount of ship war mostly focused around Yuzu with her most popular ships being Yuya, Yuto and Masumi. This died down near the end of season 1 when [[spoiler:Masumi started to appear less, Yuto fused with Yuya and Yuya and Yuzu got monstrous amounts of ship tease till the rest of the show.]] The main war was mostly between Serena's ships which were mostly split between Yuri, Reiji, Sawtari and Yuzu.
* ''Manga/YuYuHakusho'': Hiei/Kurama vs. Hiei/Mukuro. Also, [[OfficialCouple Yusuke/Keiko]] vs. Yusuke/Anyone else. And let's ''not'' get started on how many get together with either Hiei or Kurama and begin their ''own'' combat...

!!In-universe examples

* ''Manga/BlendS'':
** The second episode contains an example when Maika and Kaho are feeding each other dessert. Akizuki, who is obsessed with [[YuriGenre yuri]] and [[GirlOnGirlIsHot likes seeing girls doing intimate things together]], gets excited. Dino on the other hand, who has an incredibly open crush on Maika, [[ObliviousToLove which seems to be obvious to everyone barring Maika herself]], is constantly countering him, by naming himself and Maika as a pairing.
** The fourth episode has another example with Miu, who admits that in the past, she had a falling out with another doujinshi artist she was collaborating with because of their shipping preferences.
* In ''Manga/CaseClosed'', Ran comments that Ayumi and Conan would be a cute ship. Her best friend Sonoko ships Conan with Ai, however. HilarityEnsues.
* At one point in ''Literature/{{Durarara}}'', Walker and Erika both ship [[OneTrueThreesome themselves and Kadota]], but they argue about who should be at the center. Walker think it should be Kadota x Erika x Walker, while [[YaoiFangirl Erika]] think it should be Walker x Kadota x Erika. Kadota isn't pleased about them discussing such things and would rather not be involved in any of this.
* Chapter 189 of ''Manga/KaguyaSamaLoveIsWar'' is all about a shipping war involving the Ishigami, Miko, and Tsubame LoveTriangle. Kaguya and Osaragi are on team Ishigami/Tsubame while Fujiwara and Onodera are on team Ishigami/Miko.
* The sixth episode of ''Manga/KissHimNotMe'', in an animated-original plotline, best friends Serinuma and Nishina fall out over how to ship the cast of a ShowWithinAShow (an obvious reference to ''Videogame/ToukenRanbu''). The odd thing is that they're shipping together the same couple; the disagreement is over who is uke and seme (''ie'', which of the two takes the lead).
* Volume 9 of ''Literature/IsItWrongToTryToPickUpGirlsInADungeon'' almost has a very literal case of ShipToShipCombat breaking out between Ryu (who ships Bell/Syr) and Aisha (who ships Bell/Haruhime).
* ''Manga/WotakoiLoveIsHardForOtaku'' has [[YaoiFangirl fujoshi]] comrades Narumi and Hanako who share many fandoms and pairings. Unfortunately, they can never agree on the seme/uke dynamics of those pairings. This is depicted metaphorically as two samurai enjoying a drink together before drawing their swords. They even disagree on how a hypothetical pairing of their boyfriends would work.
