->''Life is hard when you don't know who you are.\
It's harder when you don't know '''what''' you are.\
My love carries a death sentence.\
And I was lost for years; searching while hiding… only to find I belonged to a world hidden from humans.\
I won't hide anymore.\
I will live the life I choose.''

''Lost Girl'' is a TV series produced for Canada's Creator/ShowcaseTelevision and aired on Creator/SyFy. It revolves around Bo (Creator/AnnaSilk), a young woman with the ability to [[LivingAphrodisiac control men and women through her touch]] and [[KissOfTheVampire suck the life from them with a kiss]]. She is a [[SuccubiAndIncubi succubus]], and one of the Fae, a group made up of several races of supernatural entities separated into two sides: Light and Dark. Rather than choosing a side, Bo decides to strike out on her own and learn about her past with the help of a streetwise sidekick named Kenzi (Creator/KseniaSolo), a Fae police detective named Dyson (Creator/KrisHoldenRied) and his sidekick Hale, a beautiful scientist named Lauren (Creator/ZoiePalmer), and a wise old man named Trick (Creator/RickHowland).

The show was aired on Creator/{{Syfy}}, with Creator/{{Funimation}} distributing the series on DVD and Blu-Ray in Fall 2012. It has a webisode series dubbed "Season 3.5."

On August 25, 2014, it was announced that the fifth season would be the show's last. The series finale aired (in Canada) on October 25, 2015.

Character specific tropes can be found on the [[Characters/LostGirl character page]]. Now has a [[Recap/LostGirl recap page]] too.

----
!! This show provides examples of:
* EleventhHourSuperpower:
** When Lauren is threatened by the lich and his minions, combined with a side order of ThePowerOfLove. Bo doesn't remember what she did or how she did it but there were elements of GodSaveUsFromTheQueen at that point.
** This same power comes up again after Bo's Dawning, where [[spoiler:Dyson willingly sacrifices his life for her to survive it]]. Out of nowhere, she starts speaking with an echo, and drains Lauren, Kenzi, Trick and Stella to save [[spoiler:Dyson]].
* AbsurdlySpaciousSewer: In the webcomic at least.
* AbusiveParents: Kenzi's stepfather is said to have locked her in a closet for as little as laughing too loud, and generally made her childhood miserable enough that she came close on several occasions to summoning Baba Yaga to kill him.
* AccidentalAimingSkills: Vex [[spoiler:kills one of the [=UnderFae=] restraining Kenzi with an ax]]. He later claims he meant to hit her. She doesn't buy it.
* ActionGirl:
** Bo has graduated to this status by the start of Season 2.
** So has Kenzi.
** As of the fourth season, Lauren is getting in on the action.
** Tamsin, a centuries-old valkyrie, has been this for far longer than the above three combined.
* AffablyEvil:
** Some of the more pleasant Dark Fae, such as Mayer and [[spoiler:Ryan]]. The Blackthorn, despite being Light Fae, also comes across this way, portraying the Fae need to feed off of humanity as regretful but necessary.
** Both Vex and the Morrigan, on the other hand, are FauxAffablyEvil.
--->'''Bo:''' You're like an evil Hall and Oates.\
'''The Morrigan:''' They're not evil?
* AllMythsAreTrue:
** All myths are Fae. Including Phoenixes and Unicorns. While Kenzi accepts most of these, she is absolutely terrified to learn that Baba Yaga is real.
** While the trope still works in this case, the "All Myths Are Fae" rewording of the trope does not because [[spoiler:the Garuda are actually older than the Fae themselves]].
* AlliterativeName:
** '''L'''auren '''L'''ewis
** '''M'''ackenzie '''M'''alikov
* AllPsychologyIsFreudian: Averted. When Bo is posing as a therapist, Lauren recommends that she review the works of several psychologists including UsefulNotes/CarlJung, UsefulNotes/SigmundFreud, Masters and Johnson, and Alfred Kinsey. While much of what Bo does on the case revolves around her patients' sex lives, that could be because she's a Couples Counselor. And her one therapy session is resolved simply by her heightening and directing the couple's sexual energies at each other.
* AllWomenAreLustful: This is not surprising given that the main character is a bisexual succubus with a supporting cast of women eager to be her one and only, both in life and in bed. Even the lady who shows the least skin on camera, Kenzi, is no prude by any stretch of the imagination.
* AlterKocker: Mayer, YiddishAsASecondLanguage and all. However, his base of operations is a Chinese restaurant, and his niece, although white, has somewhat of a Chinese theme to her style.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: In "Dark Horse," Bo chooses to save Lauren before she goes to save the world.
* AndThisIsFor: The season 4 final, [[spoiler:Bo to Massimo]]:
-->[[spoiler:'''Bo:''' ''[slap]'' That is for laying a finger on Lauren.\
''[knees]'' For Rainer.\
''[strikes with the butt of blade]'' For Hale.\
''[stabs]'' And '''that''' is for breaking Kenzi's heart.]]
* AmateurSleuth: Bo and Kenzi. Kenzi tries hard to make them professional [[PrivateDetective private investigators]], but Bo seems to care more about helping people than earning a living.
* AnchoredShip: Bo[=/=]Dyson in Season 2, thanks to the Norn. Bo[=/=]Lauren hits this in Season 3. When Lauren finally finds herself unable to keep up with the Fae world, she and Bo agree to go on a break; she's just unsure whether it will be a permanent one or not.
* AngerBornOfWorry:
** In episode 3.09, Dyson volunteers to go the Temple with Bo for her Dawning to protect her. In the process, he gets hurt. After he confesses he loves her, Bo gets angry at him:
--->'''Bo:''' You're the most frustrating, stubborn, assface that I've ever met.\
'''Dyson:''' Hey, I don't like me much either. Trust me.\
'''Bo:''' Stop being so charming! This isn't the time. ''[Bo punches Dyson]'' I will kill you!
** In episode 3.12, Hale talks to Kenzi convince her to get out of danger, leading to the following exchange:
--->'''Hale:''' Forget about Bo for a second. You have to go.\
'''Kenzi:''' Stop saying that to me! Why does everybody keep saying that? We all used to be friends, Hale!\
'''Hale:''' Goddammit, Kenzi, you are not my friend, you’ve never been just a friend! If anything happens to you, I won’t be any good to anyone, and right now, I need to be better than I’ve ever been\
'''Kenzi:''' Asshole. Stupid. Why didn’t you tell me that?\
'''Hale:''' Because I was scared.
* AndIMustScream:
** The Lich doesn't just animate dead bodies. He brings back the person's soul, traps it in their own body and then uses them for whatever he wants. Bo is horrified. Later, one of the Lich's victims, the cowgirl, begs Bo to allow to her die, unwilling to go on living.
** [[spoiler:Massimo reveals that holding the Twig of Zamora while in a fire pit meant that he was constantly having his skin burned off, healed and then burned off again. This ordeal lasted ''seven days''.]]
* ApeShallNeverKillApe:
** Fae apparently aren't supposed to feed off each other, as that what's humans are for. Given that no one objects when Bo does it, it might be that either succubi (and the like) are excluded from this due to their "enjoyable" methods of feeding; or that Fae simply aren't supposed to ''kill'' each other by feeding. Once again, that's what humans are for.
** Used as a plot point in the Season 3 finale, where [[spoiler:Taft has had Lauren turn him into a hybrid with wolf-Fae DNA. He then claims that Dyson can't kill him, as they are blood brothers. Dyson reveals Lauren actually made him half-human and half-''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabbit cabbit]]'' (a rabbit/cat hybrid), which a wolf can definitely kill]].
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: In "Adventures in Faebysitting" after Kenzi tells a child a story:
-->'''Ethan:''' You just said the b-word, the a-word and ginger!
* AsianFoxSpirit Inari, the villain of ''The Kenzi Scale''.
* AskAStupidQuestion: "There's Bo Place Like Home":
-->'''Stella:''' Why deny your fear, child?\
'''Bo:''' Because it's scary!?
* TheAtoner:
** Bo. She does feel extreme guilt for her murder spree in the past, and making up for it is likely her motivation for becoming a detective.
** [[spoiler:Lauren]], of all people, is implied to be one, due to having a past as an eco-terrorist.
* AuraVision: Bo, according to "I Fought the Fae (And The Fae Won)." This is how she's able to detect a character with {{Invisibility}}. Well, she can see sexual auras at least, which she claimed to be able to do back in Season 1 on her NotADate with Lauren.
* {{Autocannibalism}}: Gary, a Fae butcher, from "Death Didn't Become Him":
-->'''Gary:''' You know what they say--sometimes a flesh-eater is just too tired to get out of bed, go to the fridge, know what I mean? ''[bites off his own index finger]''. In his defense, the fingers do grow back.
* AxCrazy:
** [[spoiler:Aife, a Dark Fae who wants to restart the war between the Dark and the Light]].
** Reynard, a Dark Fae who wants to restart the war between the Dark and the Light.
* Literature/BabaYaga: Kenzi drunkenly invokes her to put a curse on Dyson. She is utterly horrified when she sobers up and discovers that her childhood horror is real.
* BackForTheDead: [[spoiler:Ciara]] in "Lachlan's Gambit."
* BadassNormal:
** Although the Fae tend to dismiss humans as a threat, a determined human can seriously hurt and/or kill a Fae.
** Kenzi. In a series of supernaturals who can break her physically without trying and mentally with a glance, she manages to hold her own and repeatedly save Bo from other Fae. Exaggerated in "[=ConFaegion=]," [[spoiler:with the help of the Staff of Righteousness]].
** Lauren is very much capable of "sciencing" anybody to death. By "Origin," [[spoiler:she managed to turn Evony--the ''Morrigan''--human]].
* BadPowersGoodPeople:
** Corpse-eaters and harpies are numbered among the Light Fae. The corpse-eaters, known as Aswang, are portrayed as saintly old women who consume the unloved and diseased dead.
** Also Bo herself. Despite possessing the supernaturally seductive touch and a life-draining KissOfDeath, she is one of the most moral characters in the show.
* BatmanGambit: [[spoiler:The Morrigan's assistant]].
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: The Norn is more a case of "be careful whom you make wishes to."
* BeethovenWasAnAlienSpy: Shakespeare was Fae. And so were Charles Mayo, UsefulNotes/AlbertEinstein and Marie Curie.
* BeingTorturedMakesYouEvil: [[spoiler:Bo's mother Aife]].
* BerserkButton:
** Threatening to kill and eat Lauren is not a good idea around Bo.
** Bo also loses it when The Ash refers to Lauren as his property.
** Also, do not insult Kenzi's shoes or spill anything on them.
* BetaCouple: [[spoiler:Hale and Kenzi]]… sort of.
* BetterToDieThanBeKilled: Or worse. So [[spoiler:the Morrigan's assistant]] graphically commits suicide when discovered.
* BettyAndVeronica: Dyson and Lauren. Initially with safe, helpful Lauren as Betty and dangerous, smoldering Dyson as Veronica. [[spoiler:As their motivations are uncovered over the course of the series, things become more blurry]].
* BigBad:
** [[spoiler:Aife]] for Season 1.
** The Garuda for Season 2.
** [[spoiler:Dr. Taft]] for Season 3.
** BigBadEnsemble: The Una Mens, The Wanderer, and [[spoiler:Massimo]] for Season 4.
*** DiscOneFinalBoss: [[spoiler:The Una Mens are slaughtered in "Waves"]].
* BigDamnHeroes: Bo and Kenzi to ''Vex'' of all people. And then moments later, he has to save Bo from being killed.
* TheBigDamnKiss: In Season 4, [[spoiler:Hale finally makes his feelings for Kenzi clear, leading to a makeout scene on the kitchen table of the clubhouse]].
* BisexualLoveTriangle: Bo, a succubus fae, not only has strong feelings for Dyson, a male werewolf Fae, but for Lauren, a female human scientist working with the fae. Initially, Bo tries to keep her distance from Lauren, as she hasn't figured out how to fully control her drain-life-via-sex powers, and "feeds" off Dyson fairly regularly because fae have more life to give, so she can feed without killing him. As the series progresses and Bo learns to control her powers more (and various characters' dark secrets start coming out), the situation develops into a full-blown love triangle, with jealousy, betrayals, suspicion, and angst. In one memorable scene, Bo turns her love triangle into a riddle--a trick question one.
-->'''Bo:''' She's brilliant. He's strong. Her life is little. His life is long. Both loves are pure. Both loves are true. If you were I, who would you choose? [...] Hey, I was kind of hoping that you could tell me 'cause as far as I know there is no answer.
* BlessedWithSuck:
** Baku have incredible powers to cure disease. Unfortunately, obtaining this curative property requires killing and skinning them.
** Trick as well. Anything he writes in his blood comes to pass, but often in unexpected ways and with a high price to himself. He only uses his powers as an absolute last resort.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: Lauren (Blonde), Bo (Brunette), Kenzi (Red wigs on occasion).
* BloodKnight: Dyson's old pack seemed to have been composed of those. They loved to fight and did not care who their king sent them against or why.
* BloodMagic: The Blood King is able to alter reality through inscriptions written in his own blood.
* BloodSport: A Fae running a MMA gym starts running underground fights that he broadcasts over the internet to paying spectators. When his human champion proves to be too good for other human fighters, he starts pitting him against Fae fighters like Ogres and [[MadeOfIron Obsidians]]. None of the Fae seem too concerned that a human could easily be killed in such a match-up.
* BlueBlood: The noble families: five for the humans, and five for the Fae. And then there's the mythic Blood King himself.
* BondageIsBad:
** Vex, one of the darkest characters in the show, is shown in indulging in it. Though to be fair, his partner emphasizes the importance of trust in it.
** The Morrigan also keeps handcuffs already cuffed to her bed frame. [[spoiler:This bites her in the ass.]] She also uses Pepper Spray for… something.
* BoomerangBigot: [[spoiler:Massimo]] is a human who displays great contempt and disgust for other humans. This may be a result of being a human raised in the Fae world. "Origin" further hints that [[spoiler:this may be due to Evony being a horrible mother to him]].
* BountyHunter: One shows up in "Original Skin" hunting an escaped Dark Fae mental patient.
** Tamsin was in this line of work before she "pissed off the wrong people."
* BowChickaWowWow: (One of) Kenzi's way(s) to describe Bo's side activities.
* BreakHisHeartToSaveHim: [[spoiler:In "Truth and Consequences," Kenzi tells Nate that she never loved him so that he'll leave and be out of the line of fire when the Garuda attacks]].
* BrokeYourArmPunchingOutCthulhu: Trick reveals (too late) that [[spoiler:if the Una Mens are killed, their power is all placed in the Origin Seed. Whoever has it will have the collective power of the Una Mens. Massimo consumes it in "Origins."]]
* BuffySpeak: Bo and Kenzi can lapse into this. Bo is particularly prone to it when trying to talk to Lauren about anything science-related.
* ByTheEyesOfTheBlind: Lightning birds can only be seen by human females.
* CainAndAbel: In "Fae Day," Liam takes out a hit on his brother due to a childhood grudge. [[spoiler:Subverted when he calls off the hit after his dad admits he was the one who wronged him. Tragically, death still finds Sean anyway, just to prove the Banshee's infallibility]].
** [[spoiler:Lauren]] and her brother apparently.
* CallBack:
** In the Season 4 premiere, [[spoiler:Aife]] thralls a waitress (the ''same'' waitress, in fact) to get out of paying a bill, just like Bo did in the pilot. With the same basic dialogue.
** In episode 1.03, Kenzi walks into the bathroom to find a half-naked Dyson (who'd spent the night with Bo), points him in the direction of the toothpaste, then does a little victory dance on the way out. Episode 2.06 repeats the scene almost verbatim--only this time, it's ''Lauren'' who slept over, and Kenzi's (hungover) exit dance ends with her pretending to barf.
* CanadaDoesNotExist:
** The show makes absolutely no effort to hide the fact that it is filmed in Toronto (the accents, all those shots of the ''very distinctive'' TTC streetcars, and a few incidental glimpses of the CN Tower being dead giveaways), but this, or even which country or province the city is in, is never made explicit.
** In one episode Bo makes multiple visits to a woman on death row. The first time she goes, it is implied that she crosses the border (there is no death penalty in Canada). Afterwards she is back home but then she visits the prisoner twice more on the same day, which would make for a lot of commuting since it is about a 2 hour drive to the nearest border crossing from Toronto.
** Check the currency and the flag in the trailer park in the second episode…
** When street intersections are mentioned, we get things like "University and Dunkirk."
** The one cop-shop we hear mentioned is not "39th Precinct," but rather "39th Division."
** One episode showed a realtor's sign on the lawn of a house; the phone number had a 416 (Toronto) area code.
** The UsefulNotes/CanadianAccents are a bit of a giveaway. In particular, they pronounce "Lich" to sound like "lick" instead of like "Rich," even going as far as having Kenzi mistake the word for "lick" when she first hears it.
** A sign in a restaurant window in the first episode reads "LLBO," which means the Liquor Licensing Board of Ontario (advertising that the restaurant sells alcohol).
** After a joke about a Fae black market, Kenzi complains that Cherry Coke is hard to find, [[TruthInTelevision which is true in Canada]].
** When Kenzi joins Bo on a mission and reveals she's tipsy, Bo comments that it will ruin her candidacy for the Young Conservatives, meaning not young people with conservative values in general but the official Youth wing of the Conservative Party of Canada.
* CarCushion: In one episode, a hypnotized guy who fancies himself a tightrope walker falls to his death as soon as he sets foot on the rope. [[GoryDiscretionShot His landing isn't seen]] but heard, with a car siren joining the sound of splintering glass and metal when he hits the ground.
* CartwrightCurse: Bo's power is to suck the life out of her partners. Dyson is the first one to break this curse of hers, and Lauren's training later allows her to control her "feeding." She never stops feeling guilty for her (accidental) first kill, however.
* TheCasanova: Dyson. Unless cursed.
* CassandraTruth: Bo, when trying to convince people Kenzi has been replaced. It didn't help that she offered no proof and was acting erratically. Plus, [[spoiler:at the end, it's revealed there's something wrong with her as well]].
* CatFight: Bo usually kicks ass the regular way like most straight-up brawlers do, but in Season 5 she does get into one of these with ''[[spoiler:Zeus]]'' of all things (yes, THAT one. It's not just a naming coincidence).
%% TheCastShowoff is a Trivia trope and has been moved to the trivia tab.
* ChainedToABed:
** Vex gets Chained to a Bondage Rack in "It's Better to Burn Out Than Fae Away." Since his GameBreaker powers requires the use of his hands, this renders him completely helpless.
** Bo handcuffs the Morrigan to her bed in "Into the Dark." Lucky for Bo, the Morrigan always keeps some cuffs handily attached to the headboard…
* CheatedDeathDiedAnyway: In one episode, a banshee wails to signal the death of a Fae, which turns out to be Sean Kavanaugh. Sean's brother Liam (a fraudulent Wall Street broker) had hired an assassin to kill him. After defeating the assassin and reconciling the brothers, Liam calls off the hit, but Sean ends up getting killed at the end anyway by a disgruntled investor who was aiming for Liam.
* ChekhovsBoomerang: The Twig of Zamora, appearing at the end of Season 3 and coming back at the end of Season 4. It protects Hale from the Morrigan, and then Kenzi from her. [[spoiler:Kenzi trades it to Massimo for Fae powers, and it allows him to survive both falling into a fire pit and Hale's attack… which tragically allows him to kill Hale. Lauren then takes it back from him in "Dark Horse," allowing Bo to kill him]].
* ChekhovsGunman: When Bo and Dyson first visit Liam at his office in "Fae Day," they pass a couple of security guards dragging an angry investor out of the office. At the end of the episode, [[spoiler:[[HopeSpot just when it appears that the banshee was wrong to wail for Liam's brother Shawn and Shawn is going to survive]], the angry investor shows up and pulls out a gun. He tries to kill Liam, but Shawn [[TakingTheBullet takes the bullet for him]], [[YouCantFightFate thus proving the banshee right]].]]
** In the Season 3 finale, [[spoiler:Lauren agrees to help Dr. Taft if he gives her the tools she needs to save an injured Fae, a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabbit cabbit]]. Later in the episode, it's revealed she took a sample from the cabbit and used her DNA to make Taft a human-Fae hybrid, as opposed to the wolf-Fae DNA he thought]].
* ChekhovsSkill: Lauren mentions that she's been taught how to pick handcuffs in "Turn To Stone." She uses this trick again in "Dark Horse" [[spoiler:to escape from Massimo's chains and help Bo]].
* ChewingTheScenery:
** The escaped mental patient, but '''especially''' once he's in Lauren's body. Zoie Palmer looked like she was having ''a lot'' of fun.
** The Norn goes from calm, collected and elderly to devouring the scenery like flipping a switch.
** Kenzi inhabiting Dyson's body. In the Season 4 pre-premiere "A Day at the Clubhouse," Ksenia Solo even jokes that Kris Holden-Ried's acting during that episode was how he normally is on set.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: Bo has a case of it, as when she won't give up on an investigation simple once she's found the person she's looking for--she also has to ensure they aren't it/don't get into any more trouble. And every single time she's given a SadisticChoice, she will always TakeAThirdOption, even when none is available at the time.
* ClingyJealousGirl:
** While Kenzi is straight and her relationship with Bo is purely platonic, she tends to be very jealous towards Bo's love interests. When Laruen accuses her of acting like this, Kenzi doesn't particularly deny it.
** [[spoiler:Kitsune-Kenzi]] takes this up to eleven, and makes things worse because of it. At one point, she gets jealous of Bo trying to save Lauren, so she ''deliberately puts herself in danger'' to try and get Bo to save her.
* ColorCodedForYourConvenience: Light Fae tend to wear white grey or beige. Dark Fae tend to wear black. Lampshaded by Lachlan when he points out how good Bo looks in dark colors as succubi are predominantly shown to be Dark Fae.
* ConversedTrope: From the Season 2 premiere:
-->'''Bo:''' Guy disappears for three weeks and leaves you hanging, usually the girl gets to be the pissy one, yes?\
'''Kenzi:''' That is how I've come to understand things from my education in [[RomCom romantic comedies]], yes. Also, girls with glasses are way smart and [[CuteClumsyGirl being klutzy is adorable]].
%%eventually pothole "girls with glasses are way smart" to Brainy Specs once TRS is finished cleaning up the glasses tropes
* CoolAndUnusualPunishment: Teenage!Bo demands Trick's car keys, and threatens to count to 100 in French if he doesn't give them to her. He and Lauren are unimpressed. Her inability to count higher than ''four'' is what actually sets him off.
-->'''Bo:''' Quatre. Quatre. Quatre!\
'''Trick:''' Cinq! For the [[OhMyGods love of Aphrodite]], it's cinq!
* ConveyorBeltODoom: There is one that Tamsin is tied to because she was naughty on Yule. Krampus took her and was going to turn her into candy, but Bo stopped it and set her free. Later Bo is strapped to it but is freed when she confesses her worries about the Wanderer.
* CreepyChild: The little girl who keeps appearing to Bo in the Season 2 premiere. She later reveals herself as the [[ShoutOut Nain]] [[Series/RedDwarf Rouge,]] a harbinger of doom. Starts out creepy, but once Bo has had enough of her cryptic lines, the "child" part reveals itself.
-->'''Nain Rouge:''' And Bo? When you do meet our enemy, kick his feathered ass.
* CulturalPosturing:
** All the Fae (except Bo, Trick, Hale and Dyson) seem to look down on humans. Underfae don't get much respect, either.
** Dyson treats Kenzi with respect, but he's clearly contemptuous of Lauren. Though this may be in part because she's also a slave. Or because he is jealous of her relationship with Bo.
** Trick actually starts to show signs of it in Season 3. He tells Hale to shut Kenzi out and focus on his duties, citing that ultimately Kenzi is "not one of us." It ends badly. He later pulls it on Lauren, telling her the Dawning (a mystical rite that Bo is going through) is not meant for her kind to understand. She will have none of it and demands an explanation.
** Hale, possibly because of Trick, is also showing signs of it in Season 3.
* {{Curse}}:
** Kenzi invokes the Baba Yaga to inflict one on Dyson.
** [[spoiler:Lauren's girlfriend Nadia turns out to be under one, hence her coma]].
* CursedWithAwesome: Kenzi certainly thinks Bo's powers are cool. Bo's not so sure. Given that Bo has spent the last decade killing anyone she slept with (and possibly even kissed), she has a good reason to think her powers suck. And that Bo has to regularly kill or else; or so she thought until Lauren taught her otherwise.
* DamselOutOfDistress: While all the women on the show have been put in cages at some time or another, none of them have just put up with it and waited to be rescued. Even Kenzi, the most powerless of the bunch, works her ass off to save herself (though she's glad to get help when it shows up).
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Several of the main characters.
** Bo spent 10 years on the run, thinking she was a monster, and forced to kill to stay alive.
** Kenzi had a very abusive stepfather, eventually ran away, and spent years living on the streets.
** Lauren hints at one. When Kenzi talks about how she had a normal upbringing, Lauren emotionally responds that Kenzi doesn't know anything about her. [[spoiler:It's later revealed that she and her brother were eco-terrorists, until they unwittingly killed several people with a bomb they created]].
* DarkIsNotEvil: Dark Fae definitely have worse policies when it comes to humans, and they are the blacker morality compared to the Light, but, just as we see rather evil-acting Light Fae, some Dark Fae are rather pleasant (for instance [[spoiler:Ryan]]) and don't really show any "evil" traits.
** While Evony (the Morrigan) practically screams "evil bitch" with almost every appearance, she becomes very friendly with Lauren in Season 4. [[spoiler:It speaks volumes about how much stronger Lauren has become when it's ''Evony'' who later gets back-stabbed instead of the other way around]].
** Vex the sadistic Mesmer is surprisingly becoming more a JerkWithAHeartOfGold as the series continues to show more of his HiddenDepths.
** Ryan occasionally does business with Lachlan, and doesn't mind helping out Bo and the Light Fae.
* DeadpanSnarker: Kenzi, regularly. Other characters also chip in.
* DeathIsCheap: Just how cheap depends on plot relevance. This is zig-zagged ''brutally'' in "End of a Line". Acacia hangs a lampshade on it in that same episode.
-->'''Acacia:''' You and I both know dead don't always mean dead.
* DepravedBisexual:
** The Morrigan.
** Possibly Vex. Definitely depraved at least… the bisexual part remains {{ambiguous|lyBi}}. By the time his bisexuality becomes clear, he's rather less depraved.
** Averted with Bo, who is very much bisexual (as well as being polyamorous) but is never depicted as depraved.
* DeusSexMachina:
** Sexual contact can heal a succubus, at the expense of her partner. She can also inject a partner with "sexual chi", partially healing them.
** The BOH-see ahn Ta-LAHV, a mystical ritual binding the Light Fae to a piece of land, requires the Ash to have sex with the AnthropomorphicPersonification of the land, thereby consummating a mystical "marriage" to it. Furthermore, the ritual is powered by sexual energy siphoned from the surrounding crowd. This is apparently a common feature of Fae and pagan rituals.
* DidntSeeThatComing: Played for laughs in "Destiny's Child." Whenever Bo does ''anything'' that turns things in her favor, Munin laments "didn't see that coming." Hugin eventually tells him to shut up.
* DidWeJustHaveTeaWithCthulhu: Did Lauren just have pizza and beer with the Morrigan? [[spoiler:[[DidYouJustScamCthulhu And did she possibly scam her as well?]] As it turns out, yes she did.]]
* DidYouGetANewHaircut: In "Lovers. Apart." Massimo sees the Morrigan [[spoiler:with an eyepatch]], but does this for kicks.
-->'''Massimo:''' Did you dye your hair?\
'''Morrigan:''' Yes, thank you for noticing. The color is called ''[[spoiler:grow my eyeball back or you will be growing back a ball of your own]].''
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: Did Bo just wrestle ''[[spoiler:the Ancient Greek prime god Zeus]]'' on the floor of her home (in a CatFight with [[ItMakesSenseInContext both of them]] [[KickingAssInAllHerFinery wearing gorgeous dresses]] no less) and come out on top?
* DirtyCop:
** Dyson and Hale [[PlayingWithATrope play with this]]. While they take the "to serve and protect" part of their jobs seriously, they are primarily concerned with covering up evidence of Fae activities.
** This is taken to a second level by the fact that Dyson has a stronger loyalty to Trick than he does either Ash, as well as the fact that both he and Hale will easily look the other way when Bo or Kenzi break Light Fae (or in Kenzi's case, human) law.
* DistractedByTheSexy:
** Effectively Bo's superpower.
** Bo herself falls victim to it in the Season 2 premier, when she enters a club where the people have a ''very'' high sexual energy.
** Subverted when Bo's powers don't work on Lachlan.
** Subverted when another Fae in episode 5 of season 1 turns out to be immune to Bo's powers, but only because she's still young. He openly states that if she had more power or control, he wouldn't be able to resist her.
* DoesNotLikeMen: The Amazons, true to mythology. To the show's credit they aren't particularly portrayed as [[StrawFeminist Straw Feminists]], they just don't like men.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Kenzi stealing things to sell Massimo in exchange for powers has a lot of similarities to a junkie stealing for a fix. Especially since the "claimed humans are terrorists and must be killed" plot seems to have gotten lost in all the other storylines.
* DominoRevelation
* DoubleMeaningTitle: At first glance, it's easy to assume Bo's the "Lost Girl" and leave it at that. As the series progresses, however, it turns out every other main character is "lost" in their own ways as well. Just to stay within the title's constraints, Kenzi, despite being claimed by Bo and a human with an inside track into Fae affairs, can never shake off the feeling of being on the outside looking in due to her powerlessness. And Lauren, having been swept up into the Fae world unwillingly, can't decide whether she can stand to be forever bound to the Fae or to be free and lose the family she's found with them.
* DreamStealer: The baku (from Japanese mythology), a heroic version who eat bad dreams. They do so by ''hugging'' the person having nightmares. It's actually quite heartwarming to watch.
* DreamWeaver: The mares, who purposefully give people and Fae nightmares in order to feed off their fear.
** A later episode has a literal Dream Weaver, too.
* DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnMale: [[spoiler:Aofie rapes Dyson, and it is treated as Dyson being "seduced". Especially bad, since Aife is not seen using succubus powers, save for life draining.]]
* DutchAngle: Done in the episode "Arachnofaebia" to show the fear and increasing insanity of the victims of the MonsterOfTheWeek.
* DyingMomentOfAwesome: [[spoiler:Kenzi]] dies closing ''the gates of Hel.''
* EarnYourHappyEnding: Invoked by Kenzi when she tells Bo to fight for Dyson, Lauren and her overall happiness.
* EasilyForgiven:
** S1: Averted; Bo is deeply hurt when it's revealed that Lauren was ordered to sleep with her and ignores her apologies and attempts to explain. The revelation that Trick and Dyson were also lying to her seems to be what motivates Bo into forgiving her. Kenzi is seemingly still holding a grudge in Season 2.
** S3: Everyone refused to listen to Bo [[spoiler:about Kenzi being kidnapped]]. Subverted in that Bo admits it will take a while for everything to be forgiven. Double Subverted in that the next episode, all is forgiven, and she never mentions anyone's ignorance [[spoiler:which nearly caused Kenzi to die in captivity]].
** S3: [[spoiler:After breaking up with Bo, Lauren leaves the Fae, seeming to side with Taft. Of course she used her position to betray Taft.]] Despite breaking Bo's heart several times, the first time they meet in S4, Bo has forgiven her completely.
** S4: Lauren seemed to reject Bo again, and additionally kept secrets about [[spoiler:her plans with the Dark]]. But after one fight and [[spoiler:Lauren getting captured by Massimo]], Bo has completely forgiven her.
** S5: [[spoiler:Lauren and Bo get back together again in S5, but again Lauren breaks up with her because of their different lifespans. It only takes one conversation at the series finale for them to rekindle their relationship.]]
* EatingTheEyeCandy:
** Kenzi when Hale takes off his shirt.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kmy8zOGW8r4 Lauren, and later Dyson, are completely enraptured with Bo in 4X08.]] Bo is washing her car and putting on a show for them, playing sensually with the sponge and making sure her [[SexySoakedShirt tank top gets really wet]].
* EmbarrassingMiddleName: Det. Hale. His full name & title: Baronet William Haley Francoise Santiago of clan Zamora.
* EmbarrassingNickname: Kenzi used to be known as "Meow Meow" on the street. One of her friends was [[WesternAnimation/{{Bambi}} "Thumper"]].
* EmotionEater:
** The Djieiene "psychically feeds off the flood of adrenalized pheremones" of the people it drives into homicidal paranoia.
** Morraghs feed on rage.
** Mares feed on the fear generated by nightmares.
** The Garuda fed on Fae aggression, which pissed him off when [[spoiler:the Blood King forced the Fae War to end]].
* TheEndOrIsIt: At the end of "Mirror, Mirror", [[spoiler:Baba Yaga's burned hand is shown reaching through a mirror, despite her apparent death]].
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer:
** Everyone's hot for Bo. It probably comes with being a Succubus.
** Same with Sherri and her fellow selkie strippers in "Fae Gone Wild", who have Kenzi questioning her sexuality.
* EverythingsSexierInFrench: Including singing. In "La Fae Époque", Bo goes into Dyson's mind and sees Lauren on a stage singing in French. She really likes it, a quick ummm check reveals Dyson liked it, and Bo is totally bummed when she realizes she's leaving.
-->'''Dyson/Bo:''' Flora/Lauren isn't done singing yet... in ''French!''
* EvilBrit: Vex. The more we find out about him, however, the less evil he turns out to be.
* EyeScream: It seems that, at the end of the third season, [[spoiler:Vex actually followed through on the implied threat with the stun gun. The Morrigan shows up with an eye patch in the fourth season. She then gets a new eye]].
* FaceHeelTurn: [[spoiler:Lauren]] eventually gets fed up with how she'd been treated by the Light Fae and decides to work for the Dark. Notably, she doesn't become evil, she's just working for the "bad guys." [[spoiler:And then subverted, she's trying to help Bo and scams the Morrigan.]]
* TheFairFolk: Fairies, including Ciara. The "fair" part especially applies--at [[spoiler:Ciara's funeral]] Trick notes that fairies are all very photogenic.
* FalseFriend: [[spoiler:Cayden]] turns out to be one for Dyson.
* FanserviceExtra:
** The show features many scenes with female (and some male) good-looking minor characters having sex. Often, they're with [[MsFanservice Bo]], given she's a succubus, but not always..
** Even when fully dressed, many of the women show a lot of cleavage (sometimes of the NavelDeepNeckline kind). Some handsome men are also shown with [[ShirtlessScene their shirts off]] as well and in tight pants.
* FanserviceFauxFight: Alluded to. When Bo discovers she may be facing another [[SuccubiAndIncubi succubus]], she goes to an expert for advice. When she asks how one succubus fights another, her friend Kenzi snarkily interjects, "slow motion pillow fight?”
* FantasticRacism:
** Nearly every Fae in the series has a ''very'' low opinion on humans. Kenzi is only barely tolerated, because they see her as Bo's property. Lauren is also treated this way, as they see her as the property of the Ash.
** This gets worse with the 3rd season finale, where the Morrigan manages to manipulate the Fae into deciding that all humans claimed by the Fae are a threat that need to be eliminated.
** Different kinds of magical creatures have different status in the Fae world, with some being regarded as inferior beings.
* FantasyKitchenSink: The Fae world includes all kinds of magical beings from folklore and mythology, even those (such as Greek gods) who don't count as fae in real-life folklore. Basically, if it exists in mythology, however obscure it may be, it's real, and either dark or light Fae.
* FateWorseThanDeath: Implied to be the fate of any claimed human who outlives their Fae "owner." Stella whispers this into Kenzi's ear but Trick reassures her that he, Hale and Dyson would take care of her if it came to it.
* FilmNoir: The entire series is dark lit, and often takes place in underground bars and abandoned buildings or an AbandonedWarehouse. The protagonist is an BadassLongcoat AntiHero FemmeFatale PrivateDetective who deals with TheMafia, fae style. It even comes with FlashForward and {{Flashback}}.
* {{Fingore}}:
** Vex forces Siegfried to stick his hand down a sink trash disposal.
** Bo and Dyson question a Fae who recently lost a finger. When they ask how he lost it, he bites off another of his fingers to demonstrate. He likes to snack and the fingers apparently grow back.
* FlowersForAlgernonSyndrome: When a Fae father drugs his son to become smarter, he starts infecting others at his school causing serious damage to humans. The son reverts back to being dumb by the end of the episode.
* ForcedPrizeFight: The pilot episode. It's apparently how fledgling Fae are proven, and winning allows them to choose a clan to align themselves with, whether Light or Dark.
* ForScience: Lauren's reason for working with the Fae. Well, that's the reason she gives anyway. The real reason is [[spoiler:her girlfriend was stricken ill, and then lapsed into a coma, by a disease that was supposed to only affect Fae. The Ash offered Lauren all the resources she wanted to finding a cure, in exchange for becoming a slave to the Light Fae]].
* FreakyFridayFlip: Most of the main characters in "Original Skin" switch bodies. Kenzi in Dyson is probably the SugarWiki/{{Funny Moment|s}}. Similar to ''{{Series/Farscape}}'', they have name tags to distinguish everyone.
** This gets a CallBack in Season 3 when parasite makes some of the characters act like teenagers.
--->'''Tamsin:''' Did someone spike your brew-ski?\
'''Dyson:''' Dude, this one time that totally happened. I got to be Kenzi, nailed it!
** And parodied later in the same episode:
--->'''Bo:''' ''[puts a device to her and Lauren's heads]''. Bzzz! We have now swapped minds. 'Hi, I'm Dr. Lauren. I don't like to have any fun. Take two frownnie brownies and call me in the morning."
* FreakyIsCool: Kenzi sure seems to think so.
* FriendlyEnemy: Dyson and Lauren try to have this relationship, being at least courteous to each other while simultaneously pursuing Bo. Eventually anyway; they practically hated each other in Season 1.
* FriendsWithBenefits: Bo and Dyson try to be this in the first season. Bo does it again in Season 5, although with Tamsin this time.
* FriendsRentControl: Subverted. The ladies have no real income to speak of, but live in a giant converted warehouse. It's justified by the fact they are squatting, not paying rent, and it's still kind of a dump. It still doesn't explain how they can afford all those fabulous clothes…
* GadgeteerGenius: Ryan Lambert.
* GeekyTurnOn: Bo is apparently turned on when Lauren "geeks out." In Season 3, Lauren rambling on some geeky topic is implied to be a form of foreplay for them.
* GenkiGirl: Mayer's niece, Cassie, an oracle. She becomes quite serious when using her powers, though. By her return three seasons later in "La Fae Époque", it's hard to recognize her as the same girl.
* GentleGiant: Bruce, a minor Dark Fae who's a great friend of Kenzi's. He's both enormous and dorky.
* GigglingVillain: [[spoiler:Bo's mother, and later Reynard, the mental patient Dark Fae who steals Lauren's body]].
* GirlOnGirlIsHot:
** Played with. Whenever Bo hooks up with a random female playmate, it seems mainly just for titillation, [[JustifiedTrope which actually works since she's a succubus]]. The scenes between her and Lauren are more than just {{Fanservice}} though, as they clearly care for and love each other. Both actresses have noted this, and are very proud of it.
** Played straight when [[spoiler:Bo seduces the Morrigan in "Into the Dark," as she only did it to distract her and it's ultimately PlayedForLaughs]].
** Played straight again when [[spoiler:Bo and Tamsin kiss while mentally regressed to teenagers]]. Dyson was clearly enjoying the moment.
* GreenThumb:
** The first Ash.
** Landwights.
* GoshDangItToHeck: Averted. Kenzi has no problem swearing, and Showcase has no problem airing it, nor does Syfy. They do draw the line at PrecisionFStrike, though.
* TheGoodTheBadAndTheEvil: The Fae world is divided between the Light Fae (the "Good") who make some token efforts to avoid being completely SelfishEvil, and the Dark Fae who… really, really don't (the "Bad"). But it's all shades of grey, and the real villains are monsters (the "Evil") with no Light/Dark allegiance.
** An example in "Masks" is the Shaman's horrified reaction to Bo trying to undo all his curses:
--->'''Tshombe:''' Stop! You have no idea what you are doing!\
'''Bo:''' Yes, I do. I'm freeing innocent people.\
'''Tshombe:''' Not all the cursed are innocent people. Not even by your standards.
** Discussed by the Blackthorn in "I Fought the Fae (And The Fae Won)." He comments that some of the Light Fae don't think that "Light" is a proper term for them. He acknowledges that Light Fae hunt humans for food, but Dark Fae do it for food and ''pleasure''.
** It really says something about the show's morality when TheReveal that a high-ranking Light Fae ([[spoiler:Lachlan]]) is actually a good guy and not the JerkAss he appeared to be is a legitimate surprise.
** The Dark Fae [[spoiler:Ryan]] actually discusses this with Bo at one point, citing Lachlan throwing Lauren in a dungeon as an example of how the Light can be.
** AtLeastIAdmitIt: In "Let the Dark Times Roll," the Morrigan claims the only difference between the Light and Dark is that Dark don't pretend to be something they're not. Kenzi later describes it as "The Light Fae are assholes, the Dark Fae are assholes who know how to have fun."
* GoodPowersBadPeople: The landwights are nature Fae who bring amazing good fortune to anyone who eats the plants that grow on their land. The Dark Fae landwight seen in the show, however, is happy to use humans as plant food.
* GoingCommando: Bo quips that the Kitsune girls won't find any panties in her house, since she doesn't wear any. Bo is shown wearing panties in other episodes, though.
* GreenEyedMonster: Part of the reason Lauren and Dyson don't get along. Though he also seems dismissive of her because she's human, and a slave.
** Lauren also accuses Kenzi of this, in that Kenzi wants to be the only human in Bo's life.
* GroinAttack: Used as a plot point in the Season 3 opener. [[spoiler:Bo claims that the warden of a prison run by Amazons is actually a man. A guard tests the theory by grabbing the warden in the crotch. He instantly doubles over in pain, proving Bo was right]].
* GunsAreUseless: Averted. Fae aren't much more immune to bullets than the typical human, and Dyson coup-de-graces several with his service piece.
* HalfArcSeason:
** The first season focuses heavily on a monster-of-the-week format, but includes bits and pieces to move the larger mystery of Bo's history forward, with the occasional arc-heavy episode (eg. "Vexed").
** The second season does it better, with the monster of the week format, a little bit of the [[spoiler:Garuda]] plot each week, and the occasional arc-heavy episode.
** The third season alternates between monster-of-the-week, Bo's apparent Dark Fae feeding investigation, teasers of The Wanderer, and eventually [[spoiler:Taft's evil Fae experiments]].
** The fourth season has the Wanderer, Bo's missing memories, the Una Mens, and eventually the Priapus.
* HalfHumanHybrid: Averted. Offspring of human and Fae are totally human. Season 3 reveals, however, that [[spoiler:it may be possible to make human-Fae hybrids]].
* HappinessInSlavery:
** Lauren is the property of the Ash, leader of the Light Fae, but is generally content with her lot in life. She finds her scientific research into Fae physiology to be intellectually rewarding, and her medical expertise, and the fact that she is owned by the leader of the Light Fae, gives her a fair amount of prestige and influence among the Light Fae. She is unmistakably a slave, however. [[spoiler:The happiness part of the trope may be in decline under the new Ash]]. The Ash also never openly refers to Lauren as his slave. However, [[spoiler:Lachlan, the new Ash, refers to Lauren as "chattel" and his property, to Bo's fury]].
** Possibly being deconstructed in the later seasons when we find out that [[spoiler:she actually joined the Ash to keep her girlfriend alive and to have a chance at curing the girlfriend's mysterious ailment, and it's later revealed that the Ash ordered her cursed to obtain Lauren as his slave in the first place]]. She also later admits to Bo that the five years she spent as slave have been rather bleak for her; and considering how reserved she is, that probably means horrible. And made worse with [[spoiler:Lachlan manipulating Bo into curing Nadia and making it look like he did it, making Lauren grateful enough to ''willingly'' pledge herself to him]]. This comes to a head near the end of season 3, where the most recent Ash [[spoiler:(Hale)]] still looks down on her and bosses her around, forcing her to go ScrewThisImOuttaHere.
** Most Fae think that Kenzi also falls into this category since they consider her to be Bo's property. It does not cross their minds that Bo considers Kenzi to be an equal.
* HarpingOnAboutHarpies: PlayedForLaughs in episode 7, when Bo is trying to apologize for being insensitive.
-->'''Lauren:''' Well, physically you're fine.\
'''Bo:''' But emotionally I'm a level 10 harpy. ''[one of Lauren's medical staff slams something down and storms off, giving Bo a dirty look]''. Is she...?\
'''Lauren:''' Of the Boston harpies.\
'''Bo:''' Great.
* HatePlague: Spread by the Djieiene.
* HeadlessHorseman: Two show up as antagonists in "Where There's a Will, There's a Fae." One is defeated when Kenzi drops his head in a bonfire, killing him.
* HealingFactor: Dyson. What makes him suitable feeding material for Bo. Also the reason she uses his friend Cayden, also a werewolf.
* HeartbreakAndIceCream: Shows up pretty frequently, what with Bo's and Kenzi's love lives so frequently being on the rocks.
* HeroicBSOD: Dyson has one when, while under the doubt-inducing effects of Tamsin's power, he kills the kitsune [[spoiler:impersonating Kenzi]]. Between the kitsune's glamour powers and the inflicted doubt, he's not sure that he [[spoiler:didn't kill the real Kenzi]] and he needs Lauren to confirm it for him. He recovers when she does.
** Bo has one at the end of the episode "Family Portrait" when she [[spoiler:finds the bodies of her mother Aife and Trick, both killed by her father Hades]]
* HeroicSacrifice: This happens to [[spoiler:Ciara and Lachlan]] in the third-to-last episode of the second season, the first stepping in front of a sword cut in order to protect Bo and the second allowing himself to be killed by the Garuda to trick him into thinking he'd won. [[spoiler:Dyson]] stays behind when the rest flee in order to hold off the berserkers, but he ultimately survives, as well as a second HeroicSacrifice attempt where he fights the Garuda in order to delay the fight with Bo.
** Unknown to Bo, [[spoiler:Dyson]] volunteering to be her hand in the Dawning was essentially this.
** [[spoiler:Kenzi]] in "Dark Horse". She did do so partly because she had faith that she would eventually be saved.
* HeroicSeductress: Bo herself is a succubus. This has a tendency to inform her methods.
* HerosClassicCar: Bo drives a Daytona Yellow [[https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CN_5ap_WoAA_e0t.jpg 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS 350 convertible]], known to Hale and Dyson as "The Succ-mobile".
* HesDeadJim: In "[=ConFaegion=]" Lauren touches a man briefly behind the ear before announcing "He's dead."
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Bo and Kenzi, in an example of what could ironically be called "playing it extra straight". Sure, Bo is not exactly heterosexual, but they manage to subvert the LesYay precisely because of that: If there was anything more than friendship between Bo and Kenzi, on this show it ''would'' be main text. Nevertheless, the "Same Gender, Always Together" catchphrase certainly applies. When it comes to the question of who counts as Bo's "heart" when it comes to magic, the show is very definative that the answer is Kenzi, rather than either of Bo's love intersts.
-->'''Kenzi:''' No, Dyson; she loves you, yes; she loves Lauren. But you know that it's me. I'm her heart, you know that.
* [[HoistByHisOwnPetard Hoist By Her Own Petard]]: Baba Yaga is knocked into the very furnace she uses to cook nubile young girls. This is simultaneously an instance of TheDogBitesBack, as the one who knocks her in is her mistreated pet domovoi.
* HopeSpot: After Sean manages to make peace with his brother in "Fae Day," his brother calls off the hit on Sean and it appears that the banshee was wrong when she wailed for him. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, YouCantFightFate and [[ChekhovsGunman an angry investor who Liam had ripped off]] tries to kill Liam and Sean [[TakingTheBullet takes the bullet for him.]]]]
* HumiliationConga: Inverted. In "Into The Dark", a series of antagonistic characters from previous episodes show up and each endure some kind of humiliation.
** Vex is captured by thugs and beaten with soccer balls.
** The Nain Rouge is chewed out by Bo and forced to drop her CreepyChild routine and admit her fear.
** The Norn is forced to surrender to a mere human, because said human was brandishing [[ChainsawGood a chainsaw]] and [[DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu cutting down her sacred tree.]]
** The Morrigan's humiliation could be considered HumiliationConga played straight, as she is forced to dance in her underwear to MC Hammer, made to feel old, [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments tricked by Bo into letting herself be handcuffed to a bed]], then finally revealed to have need for magical Fae Viagra.
* HuntingTheMostDangerousGame: The Stag Hunt.
* HypocriticalHumor: Kenzi's aunt Ludmilla claims that there's no such thing as an honest Ukrainian (Kenzi admits her family is a bit racist) after we see her making a living as a "psychic."
* IAteWhat: Kenzi does not take it well when she finds out that she ate foot soup.
* IHaveManyNames: [[spoiler:Chief Hamelin]] informs Bo he's gone by several titles in his day. Among them, Literature/ThePiedPiperOfHamelin, and [[Franchise/TheSlenderManMythos The Slender Man]].
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: Justification for many villains including the one in the season 2 opener.
** Kenzi gets a heroic version when she [[spoiler:threatens the Norn to get Dyson's love for Bo back]]. She repeatedly invokes the trope whenever Dyson asks what happened with the Norn.
* IdiosyncraticEpisodeNaming: Most episodes are a play on the word "Fae" (for example, "Fae-de to Black" and "[=ConFaegion=]")
* IfYouEverDoAnythingToHurtHer: In Season 2, Kenzi tells Lauren she will kill her if she breaks Bo's heart again. Not only is Lauren unimpressed by the threat, but she challenges whether Kenzi is genuinely trying to protect Bo, or just trying to be the only human in her life.
* ImAHumanitarian: Kenzi, but it was an accident. A lot of Fae do it ''not'' by accident.
** In "Turn to Stone", Lauren is forced perform a diagnosis on a sick [[spoiler:Dark Fae]] Elder. She concludes the reason he's sick is because he has been eating his only family members.
* ImmortalityBisexuality: Downplayed, but there seems to be a bit of this going on. Human Kenzi explicitly says she's straight in the first episode, and Lauren seems pretty strictly lesbian, while there are quite a few bi fae ladies--Bo, the Morrigan, Tamsin--and on the male side, Vex. In the fae world, no one raises an eyebrow at all the girls Bo kisses, but while undercover in the human world, Bo once awkwardly mentions her girlfriend Lauren under the name of Lawrence. It seems fae are bi-er than humans.
* ImpossibleTheft: Kenzi the shadow thief. She can literally steal the panties right off someone's behind without them noticing.
* IncestSubtext: [[spoiler:Between Bo and her mother. It doesn't help that her very first scene has her forcibly kissing Bo, and that a later episode reveals she knew it was her daughter all along.]]
** Taken even further with [[spoiler:Massimo and the Morrigan]].
* IntertwinedFingers: [[spoiler:Mark and Vex]] in the season 5 finale.
* {{Invisibility}}: Hamish's ability. Manifests as type 2 VisibleInvisibility when fading in and out. It also doesn't work on Bo, as she can still see the person's aura.
* ItTastesLikeFeet: Averted. Foot soup actually tastes pretty good. So good in fact, Kenzi didn't know it was foot soup until she was told. She didn't take it well.
* ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies: Bo gives Kenzi the platonic version of this in "Truth and Consequences". Kenzi [[spoiler:breaks up with her mortal boyfriend to protect him and insists on staying in Bo's life. Bo can't help but be grateful.]]
* {{Jerkass}}: The first Ash. The Blackthorn and Lachlan (the second Ash) manage to top him effortlessly, however. There are plenty of bigoted Fae, both Dark and Light, who view humans as little more than animals (for instance Hale's family). And then there are actually evil characters, such as the Morrigan, Vex, and the Garuda.
** [[spoiler:Hale]] becomes the Ash in Season 3, and [[TookALevelInJerkass turns]] into a total dick too. There's something about that position…
** Even [[spoiler:Trick]] being employed by the Una Mens as acting Ash. In contrast to his previous treatment of Bo, he starts becoming intentionally vague with his answers.
** JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Lachlan. [[spoiler:He's trying to stop something far worse, and seems to regret his actions.]]
* JerkAssHasAPoint: The Ash of the Season often refuses to take actions the main characters consider morally right or may in fact be morally right. But it is pointed out The Ash has to worry about those under his protection and work within the boundaries of Fae Law. Doing the "right thing" could start a war or do more damage in the long run.
%%* [[spoiler:{{Kappa}}]]: The villain Fae of episode 3.
* KarmicDeath: [[spoiler:Massimo is killed by the same sword he killed Hale with]].
%%* KatanasAreJustBetter: Kenzi tends to carry one. [[ICallItVera It's apparently called Geraldine]].
* KickingAssInAllHerFinery: Just about every female cast member dresses up to the nines at various points in the series, and rarely do these occasions pass without at least one of them getting into a fight with someone or something. It usually ends with that someone or something getting their ass handed to them regardless.
* KickTheDog: What Lachlan's treatment of Lauren amounts to.
** [[spoiler:The Morrigan's assistant]] calls the Morrigan out on all the lives she's ruined/talents destroyed, and then graphically commits suicide. The Morrigan and Vex are unmoved and have a casual conversation as she slowly bleeds to death. Bo is appalled.
** "Don't forget your dog collar."
* KillItWithFire: Bo when hunting an underfae in season 2. Hale however prefers [[MoreDakka a minigun]].
* KingIncognito: [[spoiler:Trick is the Blood King of the Fae.]]
* LaserGuidedKarma: Both averted and played straight in the episode "Big in Japan." Musashi is revered as a hero for winning a major battle long ago, a bit of an arrogant playboy spending money as he hooks up with various women. He's about to ascend to the head of his clan and recieve the power of his ancestors and asks Bo to find out who's trying to kill him. It turns out to be Musashi's sister, Tomoe but for a good reason. ''She'' was the one who won that battle long ago and when people assumed it was Musashi (being the elder son), she let them do so out of honor, not knowing her brother would turn so arrogant. She's just discovered that if Musashi attempts to ascend to the clan head under such a lie, he'll be cursed into a demon who literally licks toliets for eternity. Knowing he'll never admit the truth (he's come to believe his own lie), Tomoe is now trying to save her brother from such a horrible fate.
** Played straight as Bo and Tamsin help Tomoe prove at the ceremony that she was the hero and Musashi confesses he's been taking the credit all these centuries. He tries to kill Bo but she manages to recover and Musashi discovers that once it's known he's a cowardly fraud, no one wants anything to do with him. He's also forced to spend the next century or so working a menial job at the family resturant to pay back all the clan money he spent on himself.
* LastOfHisKind: [[spoiler:Lachlan]], the last Naga. Also, Vex is later revealed to be the last Mesmer.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: For a season and a half, the Wanderer's influence was indicated with Dion's same-named song. When we finally meet the Wanderer, he shuts the song off, saying he's sick of it, and it's never used again.
* LeyLine: The Hecuba prison in ''Caged Fae'' was built on a ley line because they are potent geothermal currents that strip the Fae prisoners of their powers.
* LifeEnergy: What Bo feeds on--well, ''sexual energy'' at least. It's a bit more complicated than that, as it's a bit inconsistent throughout the series what the energy that Bo takes and gives is really capable of.
* ALighterShadeOfGrey: The Light Fae are only light compared to the Dark Fae. They're still {{Fantastic Racis|m}}ts who feed on humans and are willing to kill them, they just don't kill them ''as much''.
* LightIsNotGood:
** The Light Fae seem just as dangerous and manipulative as the Dark ones. Just look at every single person that has ever held the title of Ash throughout the series.
** The Blackthorn even acknowledges that "Light" isn't an entirely proper term for them, but notes that they are still better than the Dark. He compares the Light Fae to Native American hunters, they respect the kill, don't over-hunt (or do it for pleasure), and don't hurt children.
* LingerieScene:
** Bo is often shown in her underwear or in various kinds of sexy nightwear.
** Kenzi tends to wander around the house in her pajamas. This is played more for cuteness than sexiness.
** Kenzi often wears corsets and other items of lingerie as outerwear.
* LipstickLesbian: Lauren, who is very feminine and attractive to men, despite herself only being interested in women.
* LittlePeopleAreSurreal: Averted. Trick's being much smaller than the rest of the cast is unremarked upon, and when another little person figures into the plot, it turns out he's related to Trick. It seems to be just another Fae marker for that particular species. Kenzi doesn't let it go without note though:
-->'''Kenzi:''' [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments Uh oh! Trouble in the Shire.]]
* LocalHangout: Trick's bar, the Dal Riata, populated only by Fae ([[MyFriendsAndZoidberg and Kenzi]]). It's actually a place of sanctuary, neutral ground for both Light and Dark.
* LondonGangster: The Red Caps, Vex's nemeses.
* LoopholeAbuse: "Nothing in the rules about bringing the stag BackFromTheDead". The Blackthorn even compliments them for thinking of it.
* LousyLoversAreLosers: In "Destiny's Child", Hugin wants revenge on his brother Mugin for "[[EmasculatedCuckold stealing his wife]]", but we learn in the end she actually left him for Mugin because he was a total dud in bed.
-->'''Hugin:''' I can't tell you how much I'm going to enjoy eating the heart right out of your chest.\
'''Hugin's Wife:''' If you'd been better at eating certain things while we were married, I wouldn't have left you for your brother.
* LukeIAmYourFather:
** [[spoiler:Trick is Aife's father, and Bo's grandfather.]]
** [[spoiler:The Morrigan]] is Massimo's mother. This was known to both of them, but was a reveal to the audience.
* MagicallyBindingContract: Spriggans can do this with a handshake. And apparently blood oaths; not even Vex is crazy enough to break one. Poor Kenzi…
* MagicMusic: Hale can do magic by whistling, being a siren.
* MagicPants: Aversion with Dyson. Kenzi actually picks up his pants post-transformation, explaining where he recovers them from. I guess he didn't have time to put the rest of his clothes on…
* ManIFeelLikeAWoman: This is Hale's first reaction when he ends up in Ciara's body in "Original Skin", much to her chagrin. Kenzi wastes even less time grabbing Dyson's junk.
* MarionetteMaster: Lichs, of dead people raised back to life.
* {{Masquerade}}: The Fae have been manipulating--and been a part of--human civilization since the beginning, but usually have kept themselves hidden, and have worked hard to make humanity believe that they are just myths. There are more or less three levels:
** The underfae, for those who can't mix with humans at all; they get discriminated against by the other Fae.
** The majority of Fae can pass as human at least part of the time, and usually have positions in the human world that let them use their talents, like cops, art agents, or night club owners.
** In between, there's also a black market fae economy that humans can get to easily, though they're not welcome, like the Dal (Trick's bar).
* MacGyvering: In "[=ConFaegion=]", Lauren is does a medical version when she cobbles together a vaccine for an Underfae parasite with some unknown medical (possibly mystical) ingredients, baking soda, vinegar, garlic, hairspray, and [[BreadEggsMilkSquick lubricating oil]]. Kenzi is very impressed.
* MeaningfulName:
** "Bo" sounds like "Beau", which means beauty. It may also be intended to be a backhanded reference to Little Bo Peep, only in this case Bo has lost her family and not her sheep. Interestingly enough, [[spoiler:her birth name is Isabeau, after her grandmother, Trick's wife]].
** A title rather than a name, but the leader of the Dark Fae is given the title of "The Morrigan" which refers to the Celtic Goddess of war and strife. It translates as "phantom queen" or "great queen".
** When a Fae reaches a high enough political position, they assume the traditional title of the position as their name. So if a Fae is only referred by his/her title, it means that you are dealing with someone really powerful. Generally, Dark Fae are named after great warriors, while Light Fae are named after sacred trees.
** Inari was the name of a Kitsune fae. She was named after Inari, the Japanese deity of, among other things, foxes.
* MindControl: Several types of Fae have some form of this power. The character Vex, who is a type of Fae called a Mesmer, can turn pretty much anyone into one of his PeoplePuppets. Bo can do this at a CharmPerson level using her succubus powers of attraction, while older, more experienced succubi [[spoiler:such as Saskia/Aife]] can enslave people to the point of creating a small army of enthralled humans who are willing to die for them. Bo later learns how to do this.
** There seems to be a wide variety of ways for the Fae to manipulate humans. The Seniatta is a type of Fae that can change a human's inner motivations by touch. It is implied that some Fae know how to make potions that can cause different effects, such as erasing or rewriting memories.
** In the season 2 finale, Bo somewhat reluctantly binds Dyson, Hale, Val, Vex, and possibly Lauren and Kenzi to her with her blood. This doesn't make them mind-controlled by her per se, but prevents them from dissenting from her instructions (and therefore prevents the Garuda from causing them to fight each other instead of him). It has the marked risk of making her possibly go power-mad and corrupted, however.
* TheMissusAndTheEx: Ciara and Bo have reached a level of friendship as of "Can't See the Fae-rest".
* MistreatmentInducedBetrayal: Lauren gives this excuse for her aligning with [[spoiler:first Taft, and then the Morrigan. Both are lies, as she's actually trying to help her friends, sabotages Taft, and screws over the Morrigan]].
* MonsterOfTheWeek: In many episodes, the characters deal with an antagonist that has never been seen before and is either killed off at the end or at least never seen again. Often it is not just an individual MonsterOfTheWeek bet a Species of the Week: the antagonist is a new species of fae, with unique powers, that appears in one episode only.
* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily: Morraghs. And Naga, on occasion.
* MrFanservice:
** Dyson, what with the whole shapeshifters don't need shirts thing. Hale's not bad looking either.
** Vex likes to dress provocatively in an androgynous, fetishy style, and often shows a lot of skin.
* MsFanservice: The whole show runs on FanService, but some of the female characters are notable even in such an environment:
** Bo shows a lot of cleavage, wears tight clothes, and has plenty of lingerie scenes and nude scenes. Justified in-universe since she lives off sexual attraction.
** Tamsin usually wears tight, skimpy or see-through clothing and deliberately sexually provokes Bo.
** The Morrigan likes to play TheVamp and dresses accordingly.
** Kenzi doesn't show very much skin (except for some cleavage) but likes to wear corsets and other fetish-style clothes as outerwear.
* MuggingTheMonster:
** Any human trying to attack Fae will usually end up in this situation.
** A rapist going after Bo in the pilot episode did not stand a chance and was not really mourned.
** Even Fae tend to underestimate Bo's power.
** A literal example occurs in the Season 3 premiere, where a group of guys try to mug Bo.
* MuggleBestFriend: Kenzi, the only non-Fae in the main cast. Until Lauren joins the main cast in Season 2.
* MuggleInMageCustody: Bo's best friend and roommate, Kenzi, is human. Within Fae society, Kenzi is claimed as a "pet" by Bo to protect her from the Fae. This is a legal fiction, and Bo does not consider Kenzi her property--their relationship is that of HeterosexualLifePartners.
* MundaneMadeAwesome: When Bruce is revealed to be enslaved by another Dark Fae, Kenzi convinces Tamsin to "master" Bruce by challenging his current owner. When the Morrigan officially declares that Tamsin can choose the type of duel, her reply is "I just wanna dance." (She was [[spoiler:just a few weeks into her current life at the time]].) Cue dance-off ''[[SeriousBusiness to the death]]''.
* TheMuse: The Morrigan is a type of muse-fae who feeds on driving artists she gets involved with insane.
* MyBelovedSmother: The Glaive has very strict instructions on what her daughter cannot do when she is out. They eliminate any 'fun' activities a young woman might want to to indulge in. Turns out some of them are actually quite reasonable considering the Fae's nature. [[spoiler:Drinking coffee stops her heart--well, one of them anyway.]]
* MyFistForgivesYou: [[spoiler:After Vex betrays them to the Morrigan, but later sides with them]] he asks if they're good. Lauren responds by punching him in the face.
* MySisterIsOffLimits: Hale is ''extremely'' pissed when he finds his sister fooling around with Dyson in "The Girl Who Fae'd With Fire."
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Bo has this moment in "Rise" when [[spoiler:she almost feeds on her friends while under the influence of her "Dark Queen" persona, until feeding on them draws out her own memories of how they 'tasted' when she fed on them previously]].
* MysteryOfTheWeek: The first two seasons in particular focused on this system.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: The Garuda in Season 2. The Wanderer seems to be shaping up to become this in Season 3.
* NewOldFlame: Why Bo can never seem to catch a break.
** Ciara, for Dyson. Or at least someone he cared deeply for in a romantic sense even if they weren't in a relationship in the past.
** Nadia for Lauren.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: If you don't do anything after invoking Baba Yaga to curse your ex, you'll be fine. If you have second thoughts and want the curse removed, Baba Yaga will take you as a slave and eventually eat you.
* NoodleIncident: In ''Scream a Little Dream,'' when Kenzi hires a brownie to clean their place:
-->'''Kenzi:''' Do you come with your own mop? Ours kinda got brutalized in the cheese fondue incident. Not pretty…
* NoOntologicalInertia: The Djieine's venom instantly disappears from its victims' bodies as soon as its heart is destroyed. Lauren starts to give a perfectly rational and sensible explanation (something to do with magnetic fields) for why it stopped instantly but trails off when she sees that Bo doesn't understand any of it.
* NoSell: When Bo tries to use her seduction powers on Lachlan, it doesn't work and he mocks her for it.
** In "Let The Dark Times Roll", Bo tries to suck the chi out of all the Una Mens at once. She takes some, they then take it back, ''and'' some of her original chi to teach her a lesson.
** In "Origins." [[spoiler:After Lauren reveals she turned the Morrigan into a human, she tries to use her powers to melt Lauren. Naturally, it doesn't work]].
--->'''Lauren:''' Are you trying to melt me? [[IronicEcho That's adorable.]]
* NotADate: In ''Food For Thought'', Bo insists that she and Lauren are meeting so that Lauren can help her learn control, and that it's not a date. Despite their clear mutual attraction, Bo fretting about what to wear for it, and that they are meeting in a bar. Kenzi doesn't buy it.
* NotInTheFace: Occurs twice "Caged Fae." A pair of muggers attack Bo, and she gets pissy one of them cuts her face with a knife. Later when the warden has her guards beat Bo, she orders them not to damage her face because she likes looking at it.
** In "Dark Horse", Evony learns why people keep saying this when [[spoiler:Kenzi smacks her in her newly-human face]].
* NotSoDifferentRemark:
** Another human uses this on Lauren at one point. He talks about being a human in the Fae world leads to you being hated and ignored, and then a Fae comes along that treats you well and may even love you, and how you'd do anything for them. All of which she can understand. The fact that he's talking about this while viciously beating her makes it a particularly uncomfortable example.
** In the season 3 finale, [[spoiler:Dr. Taft]] also uses it on her it, pointing out how the Fae have completely destroyed both of their lives.
* NothingCanStopUsNow: Boasted by the mermaids in "Waves" [[spoiler:when they plan on taking Dyson, Lauren, and Kenzi's legs]]. Then [[spoiler:Lauren defeats them all with tap water]].
* OccultDetective: Bo is one of the few female versions of this trope.
* OfCorsetsSexy: Kenzi's wardrobe staple along with her heels, which is an interesting choice when you fight monsters on a daily basis.
* OfficialCouple: Subverted. The show does a good job of confounding any attempt to outright confirm either Bo/Dyson or Bo/Lauren. [[spoiler:The series concludes with Dyson convincing Lauren to get back together with Bo in the now, and it's implied he'll wait till after Lauren's natural life ends to then be with Bo.]].
* OhCrap: Bo and Kenzi are helping out Dyson on a case involving high-schoolers becoming super-intelligent and then collapsing into a coma. Then one night Bo comes home to the BookDumb Kenzi spouting off about Euclidian Geometry…
** In "Waves," Dyson tries to call the whole investigation off when he realizes that they're dealing with mermaids, who are apparently an entire species of JerkAss psychopaths. [[spoiler:He's not wrong.]]
* OnlyOneName: Dyson, Tamsin, Vex, Lachlan.
** Kenzi (being a semi-retired con artist) has many different last names, with no real clue which if any is the one she was born with. Season 4's finale shows "Mackenzie Malikov" written [[spoiler:on her grave]].
* OohMeAccentsSlipping: Dyson during the flashbacks in "Brotherfae of the Wolves". Line by line it swings between normal Dyson, Irish, and somewhere in between.
** Made even worse when on the Pre-show for the season 2 finale he claims it was supposed to have been Scottish.
* OrphansOrdeal: Bo's biological (Fae) parents abandoned her, for reasons unknown. She then had to leave home as a teen after her powers awakened. Kenzi has been on the street since she was 10. [[spoiler:The thief in the second episode is stealing from his father as revenge for abandoning him and his mother.]]
* OurFairiesAreDifferent:
** All supernatural beings in this world, even [[OurVampiresAreDifferent vampires]], [[SuccubiAndIncubi succubi]], and werewolves, are subtypes of Fae. There are also more traditional types of Fae such as [[OurBansheesAreLouder banshees]], [[WillOTheWisp Will-o'-the-Wisps]], etc. Most types of Fae prey on humans in some way, whether by feeding on emotions, LifeEnergy, body parts/fluids, or even by draining the luck from humans.
** There is also a kind of Fae called a Fairy (this is what Ciara is). They're apparently good warriors and can teleport.
* OurMermaidsAreDifferent: Mermaids appear in "Waves." They have shell bikinis, and are given legs to walk the Earth for one year before deciding how to live (Lauren compares it to the Amish Rumspringa). They're also nothing like their [[WesternAnimation/TheLittleMermaid1989 Disney]] counterparts, and are instead the "psycho bitches of the sea."
* OurTrollsAreDifferent: For one thing, they are now ''internet'' trolls. Surprisingly, they're just as strong as more familiar trolls.
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: They can only be killed by having their heart cut out. They are also fairly low in the Fae power structure and considered to be bottom-feeders.
* OurWerewolvesAreDifferent: Dyson. Though technically he's a wolfshifter, werewolves may or may not be a completely different type of Fae.
* OurZombiesAreDifferent: Eddie's a Hsien, who can possess recently killed bodies.
* OutOfCharacterAlert: Bo realizes that Kenzi has been replaced by an impostor when she sees "Kenzi" eating food with peanuts on it--Kenzi is allergic to peanuts.
* OutsideContextProblem: ''Every'' single BigBad of each season so far.
** Season 1: [[spoiler:Aife]]'s survival was news even to Trick.
** Season 2: The Garuda was thought to be extinct after the end of the Fae War.
** Season 3: [[spoiler:Taft]] initially appeared to be nothing more than a [[spoiler:RomanticFalseLead for Lauren]].
** Season 4: The Priapus is possibly the vaguest of all the villains so far, even more so than the Wanderer.
* OutWithABang: Occasionally. Sex doesn't always equal death, and Bo can kill with just a kiss, but it happens.
* ParanoiaFuel: [[invoked]] Literally caused by the Djieiene's venom.
* ParentalAbandonment: Bo was brought up by humans with no idea of who her real parents were. She spends much of the series trying to find that out.
* APartyAlsoKnownAsAnOrgy: In ''Faes Wide Shut''. [[Film/EyesWideShut Fittingly.]]
* PeoplePuppets: Mesmers and lichs, the latter for dead people raised back to life.
* PerkyGoth: Kenzi.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Velma, the Mongolian Death Worm. She might be senile but don't take away her portable TV for too long or you will regret it.
* Literature/ThePictureOfDorianGray: Bo suspects that a lich keeps his soul in a pictures of himself and even mentions the story as her inspiration. [[spoiler:She is wrong]].
%% * PlayingWithFire: Serena.
* PleasePutSomeClothesOn: In a rather unusual example for the show, Lauren asks Dyson, who has been working out topless, to please put a shirt on before proceeding with teaching her self-defence. Even though she's a lesbian, she's visibly distracted by Dyson's bare abs.
* PluckyComicRelief: Kenzi is usually ready to provide a witty one-liner, even in the most dire situations.
* PowerAtAPrice: Why Trick, wisely, refuses to work his blood magic. He can literally write events and people out of history, and change the outcome of events, but it tends to have dire consequences which he usually can't predict.
* PrecisionFStrike: While the series has never really shied away from swearing, Lauren gets in a good one in "Turn To Stone"
-->'''Lauren:''' This is more Light Fae bullshit.
* ProphecyTwist: This being a TV show all about Fae in the modern world,it seems like there are always prophecies and fortunes waiting to trip characters up. After pointing out that she'll be screwed just as much as the rest of the Fae if the Garuda wins, Bo manages to get one of the more frustratingly unhelpful vision-providers, the Nain Rouge, to be a bit more explicit.
* PsychicNosebleed: [[spoiler:The Oracle in episode 5, but only for really intense visions.]] Trick also has one when he forces a Fae to extract the truth from him and help him remember a lost memory.
* {{Pun}}: More than half of the series' episode titles are colloquial words or phrases with the word "Fae" mixed in. Just take a look [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Lost_Girl_episodes here]] and see how long it takes before they make you groan.
* PunBasedTitle: Most episode titles are puns on the word "fae".
* PunyHumans: Nearly every Fae in the series has a ''very'' low opinion of humans, seeing them as inferior in almost all ways.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Fae age a lot slower than humans, so this is true for most of the cast outside of Bo and Kenzi. Dyson talks about his past in terms of centuries, and Shawn in "Fae Day" talks about a dispute he had with his brother in the 1900s. These characters dating the traditionally-aged Bo and Kenzi isn't seen as very unusual by the rest of the cast.
** ImmortalImmaturity: Fae generally don't act any older or more mature than they appear by human standards. In many cases, and especially depending on the type of fae they are, they may seem to act even younger than their apparent age, again at least by the standards of human society. Valkyries in particular have bodies that develop into adulthood relatively quickly, but their minds take longer to keep up, having to assimilate their previous life's memories.
* RealityWritingBook: The Blood King has one, and can use it to write the future. He needs to write in it with his own blood, and it never quite turns out as he intends it to.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Furies. If you look into their eyes you go insane, then die.
* RedHerring: One of these is bound to turn up in the mystery-based (ie. not arc) episodes. How well they're presented varies. Some examples:
** While investigating the disappearances of girls from a college in "Oh Kappa, My Kappa," Bo and Kenzi suspect the sorority and the uptight dean to be involved. [[spoiler:It's really a security guard feeding girls to his kappa.]]
** The creepy landscaper in "(Dis)Members Only" is suspected to be the landwight fae Bo and Dyson are looking for. [[spoiler:Turns out it's actually the resort's chef.]]
** In season 4, the Wanderer is frequently teased to be a possible candidate for Bo's father. It's outright disproved in a very surprising scene.
* RedStringOfFate[[invoked]]: In "La Fae Époque", a red string is used by Cassie in order for Bo to glimpse Dyson's memories. The trope is even discussed, specifically how the red string supposedly ties two peoples's destinies together.
* RescueIntroduction: How Bo meets Dyson's NewOldFlame Ciara, and how Dyson re-connects with her after several centuries of separation.
* RescueRomance: After Dyson and Bo rescue Ciara from Cayden, romance ensues. Or re-ensues.
* TheReveal:
** At the end of "Fae Day," we find out that [[spoiler:Trick is the Blood King, an ancient fae with RealityWarper powers who could have been the ruler of all the fae if he wanted]].
** [[spoiler:Saskia is actually Aife, Bo's mother.]] Later, we find out that [[spoiler:Trick is Aife's father, making him Bo's grandfather.]]
* RiteOfPassage: The Dawning. Pass and you get to be awesome. Fail… not so much.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: Hale is the heir to one of the three most powerful Fae noble clans but chose to become a police officer and interact with humans on a daily basis.
** The Blood King used to be case of a "royal who did way too much", to the point that he eventually decided to live in obscurity and [[spoiler:be a barkeep]].
* RunningGag: "Toothpaste?" "Foot locker." Also, Kenzi's reaction afterward.
* SafeWord: When Bo has a rebound threesome in the "Faetal Attraction", she comments "We're going to need a safe word." The episode [[SexyDiscretionShot fades to black]] before we find out what the safe word actually is, though…
* SassyBlackWoman: Gloris the Lightning Bird.
* ScaryBlackMan: The Blackthorn and the original Ash.
* ScrewYourself: In "Scream a Little Dream," Bo gets a dream including a version of… herself from the future after all her LoveInterests have died, who insists upon stealing a kiss (and her powers) from her. Of course, the vision of Dyson is considerably more tempting...
* SecretTestOfCharacter: In the first half of season 2, the new Ash is a JerkAss to Bo and even worse to Lauren. Eventually Bo snaps and comes gunning for him but is ultimately unable to kill him when he gives her a shot. He then reveals he was waiting to know he could trust her, along with what he knows about the season's big bad.
* SeriesContinuityError:
** The series has always been kind of loose with continuity, but it gets REALLY bad in Season 4 to the point it blatantly contradicts itself from episode to episode. Season 5 tries to clear this up with mixed results. Pretty much anything to do with The Wanderer falls under this trope.
** Season 5 borders on ContinuitySnarl - some particularly egregious examples include the show giving Tamsin wings in a prior life[[note]]forgetting that Valkyries only have wings in their final life[[/note]], having multiple characters state they have no idea what happens when there is no Ash[[note]]despite the role of the Ash changing hands four times over the course of previous seasons[[/note]], and Dyson's insistence that Mark must declare for the Light Fae and avoid the Dark[[note]]completely ignoring the fact that Dyson declared allegiance to Bo, who is unaligned, in the season 4 finale[[/note]].
* SexForSolace:
** Kenzi suggests this to Bo a few times in regards to her being rejected by Dyson. The first time in ''Faetal Attraction'' Bo has a threesome with a married couple. In ''Scream a Little Dream'' Kenzi even says "the best way to get over somebody is to get under somebody else", but Bo ignores her this time.
** In ''Lachlan’s Gambit'' Lauren grieving over [[spoiler:Nadia's death]] even gives a scientific reason for this, but ultimately subverts it.
--->'''Lauren:''' It's just that the doctor part of me never shuts off, and I know that I’m merely acting out of transference of grief onto you. Wanting to have sex is a very common response to grief. Biologically speaking, the transference often helps move the pain. Sort of use it as something else. Turn it into something different. Something better...\
'''Bo:''' ''[grinning]'' I love it when you totally geek out.\
'''Lauren:''' Can I sleep with you?\
'''Bo:''' Yes.\
'''Lauren:''' I just mean sleep. ''[Bo's face falls a little]'' In your arms?\
'''Bo:''' ...yeah exactly.
** Defied right before Lauren and Bo sleep together:
--->'''Lauren:''' I need to know that this isn't about you getting over Dyson.\
'''Bo:''' No, this is about us. ''[kisses her]''
* SexSlave: Played with. No one ever uses the word "slave" to refer to Lauren, but she does refer to herself as the "property" of the Ash, and for all the influence and prestige she enjoys among the Light Fae, she is clearly a slave. This trope comes into play when the Ash orders her to seduce and sleep with Bo. Granted, she very much liked and wanted Bo, but it's still the case that she didn't have a choice in the matter. Bo still holds it against her for awhile.
* SexySoakedShirt: One scene from season 4, episode 8 was used in trailers and has been widely disseminated on Website/YouTube. Bo is washing her car and takes the opportunity to put on a show for Lauren and Dyson. She plays with the sponge and squeezes it against her chest to make sure her white tank top gets ''really'' wet and transparent (she is [[LingerieScene wearing a bra underneath]] so she [[NippleAndDimed stays barely decent]]). Lauren is so transfixed by the sight that she doesn't notice that her ice cream cone is melting all over her hand.
* SheCleansUpNicely: Kenzi in "The Girl Who Fae'd With Fire."
** Lauren in ''Faes Wide Shut''. While she always looked beautiful, once she appears in formal wear this is taken up to eleven. Both Bo and Dyson have to take their jaws off the floor.
** Invoked by Bo in "Barometz. Trick. Pressure." when she confronts a shapeshifter who takes on Bo's form while retaining the men's suit it was already wearing.
* ShipTease: Kenzi and Hale, and Kenzi and Dyson on a more infrequent basis.
* ShipperOnDeck: When it comes to Bo's love life, Kenzi is Team Dyson all the way. She goes so far as to [[spoiler:threaten the Norn's sacred tree with a chainsaw to get her to return Dyson's ability to love]].
** Vex for Kenzi/Hale, apparently.
--->'''Vex:''' Oh go ahead and merge naughty bits already! I mean seriously, am I the only one seeing this?
* ShirtlessScene: Hale in "Death Didn't Become Him". The sight of his six pack is enough to make Kenzi [[EatingTheEyeCandy forget about her disgust at having had to remove his vomit-stained shirt]].
* ShootTheShaggyDog: Episode 4 ("Faetal Attraction") [[spoiler:The Fury, her husband, the human, AND the Fury's sisters all die, and Bo interfering made things ''worse''… the human was a serial killer. Only plus is that Bo and Dyson got in a better position.]]
** "Vexed": [[spoiler:Bo's stubborn refusal to let anyone talk her out of hunting down Vex leads to nothing. She's nearly killed by him, doesn't save Lou Ann, doesn't learn anything about her past, nearly starts a war, and her relationship with Lauren is damaged.]]
* ShootYourMate: The Lich demands that Bo feed from Lauren, so that he can finally experience passion. When Lauren urges Bo to take a small amount, the Lich clarifies he wants Bo to drain her. When she refuses, the Lich shoots Bo and prepares to kill and eat Lauren himself.
* ShownTheirWork: Every fairy, fae, and legendary creature they actually got right… sirens to furies, frost giants to lightning birds. Someone REALLY knew their mythologies.
* ShockAndAwe: Lightning Birds.
* ShoutOut:
** In "Oh Kappa, My Kappa," Kenzi's reaction to having to wear all pink to infiltrate a sorority house is to growl at Bo [[Music/TwoLiveCrew "Me hate you]] [[Film/FullMetalJacket long time."]]
** "I Fought the Fae and the Fae Won" has a twofer. First, Bo's refusal to give up on protecting Sabine prompts Kenzi to groan [[Film/BrokebackMountain "I wish I knew how to quit you."]] ''In the very next scene,'' Trick explains how all the candidates for becoming the new Ash will meet at a location known as "the Gyllenhaal"--and Bo deadpans "Which one? [[Creator/JakeGyllenhaal Jake]] or [[Creator/MaggieGyllenhaal Maggie]]?"
** In "Scream a Little Dream," Kenzi greets the hotel doorman/client by modeling his hat and quipping "This ''is'' the platform to [[Franchise/HarryPotter Hogwart's]]?"--and Bo apologizes "Don't mind [[Creator/TinaFey Tina Not-Fae]] here."
** In "Mirror Mirror", when Bo finds out that she has been cursed she says "[[Series/MorkAndMindy Shazbot]]".
** In "Lachlan's Gambit", Trick fills Bo in on some disturbing animal behaviours:
--->'''Trick:''' Every single snake at the zoo, has disappeared.\
'''Bo:''' Maybe they're on a [[Film/SnakesOnAPlane plane]]?
** In the third season finale, Kenzi gets to drive the Morrigan's sports car.
--->'''Bruce:''' Just... try to keep it on the road!\
'''Kenzi:''' [[Film/BackToTheFuture1 Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.]]
** In the same episode, after sending Trick and Stella off to Scotland, Hale leaves saying he has to [[Film/GoodWillHunting "see about a girl."]]
** The image symbolizing The Wanderer is a minimalist version of ''Art/WandererAboveTheSeaOfFog'' by Creator/CasparDavidFriedrich with a sunbursts added at the top right.
** The episode "Waves" provides numerous references to two Disney movies: all that Kenzi knows about mermaids seem to come from WesternAnimation/{{The Little Mermaid|1989}}, whilst Bo and Rayner's relationship shown in flashback is basically a WholePlotReference to WesternAnimation/BeautyAndTheBeast.
** The Lich's dying speech sounds like a creepier version of Roy Batty's from Film/BladeRunner.
** The singer's story from "Of All The Gin Joints" is (fittingly) one to Film/{{Casablanca}}.
--->'''Evony:''' I think this is the beginning of a beautiful... something.
** In "Like Father, Like Daughter," before Bo has to navigate a LaserHallway, Kenzi suggests calling in [[Film/{{Entrapment}} Catherine Zeta-Jones]].
* ShutUpHannibal: A rare case where it's directed towards a hero. Kenzi is [[WhatTheHellHero calling]] the other girls out on how they merely stood back and watched as Baba Yaga killed and ate another girl, only for one of them to reply that's all she did as well.
* SlaveryIsASpecialKindOfEvil: Bo is disgusted to learn that Lauren is a slave to the Fae. She goes to great lengths to free her, and reacts violently when Lachlan refers to Lauren as his property.
* SleuthDatesCop: While Bo and Dyson were dating she made frequent use of his police contacts, while he was trying to contain her and sometimes keep her out of his investigations. This continued even after their romantic relationship came to a dramatic end.
* SlutShaming: The kitsune girls in "The Wanderer".
* SlaveCollar: The pendant Lauren wears marks her as the Ash's property. It's just symbolic, though.
* SmugSnake: Lachlan, [[spoiler:though he's (sort of) a good guy]]. Bonus points for him literally being a snake.
* SpeakOfTheDevil: Invoking Baba Yaga involves, among other things, saying her name three times into a mirror.
* SpellMyNameWithAThe: The Ash and the Morrigan, respective leaders of the Light and Dark Fae, though it should be noted that those, like other high-ranking Fae, are their titles and not their names. To cite one example, Emmanuelle Vaugier's character was known only as "the Morrigan" until a season 2 episode revealed her real name as Evony.
* SpinTheBottle: After a parasite regresses them into teenagers, Dyson, Tamsin, and Bo all play this… with a bottle of ''shampoo''. Teenage!Dyson changes the rules so that Tamsin and Bo also have take most of their clothes off.
** He also quite clearly enjoys seeing [[GirlOnGirlIsHot Bo and Tamsin kiss]].
* SpitTake: Vex, upon being informed that [[spoiler:Trick is the Blood King.]] It probably doesn't help that he's drinking Trick's whiskey at the time.
* StalkerWithACrush: [[spoiler:Jenny]] in "Faetal Attraction".
* StickyFingers:
-->'''Bo:''' And Kenzi?\
'''Kenzi:''' Yeah?\
'''Bo:''' Stop stealing shit.
* StrikeMeDownWithAllOfYourHatred: Subverted. [[spoiler:Lachlan invokes this on Bo but he actually wants her to fail; [[SecretTestOfCharacter proving that she can be the champion of the Fae]].]]
* SuccubiAndIncubi: The protagonist and other succubi, including [[spoiler:her biological mother]].
* SupernaturallyYoungParent: Aife looks only slightly older than her daughter [[spoiler:Bo]]. Justified as she is Fae and ages very slowly, if at all. The actress playing her is actually four years ''younger'' than [[spoiler:Creator/AnnaSilk]].
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: Bo displays one when Lauren is threatened. She doesn't remember how or what she did afterwards though. This happens again after her Dawning, this time with Dyson's life on the line.
** "Dark Horse" reveals she inherited this from her father; specifically, the ability to use her power on multiple victims at once.
* TakeAThirdOption:
** Bo chooses to side with neither Light nor Dark Fae. It's made clear that this may not be the best idea. In general, this is Bo's default course of action whenever presented with a SadisticChoice.
** In episode 3.08, Bo is offered two tarot cards to choose from, but she chooses neither. Instead she picks a card from the deck.
** In episode 3.09, Bo is supposed to leave Dyson behind in the Temple, since two people can enter the Temple, but only one can leave, but she chooses [[spoiler:to take him through the portal and bring him back to life.]]
--->'''Bo:''' “There’s always another way”.
** In addition to the Light and Dark sides, [[spoiler:some people (like Dyson) are more closely allied with Trick, AKA The Blood King and ancient ruler of the Fae]].
* TakingTheBullet:
** At the end of "Fae Day," [[spoiler:Sean takes a bullet meant for his brother Liam]].
** [[spoiler:Tamsin]] takes a bullet for Bo in "Those Who Wander".
* TapOnTheHead: In "Lovers. Apart." Bo takes an iron skillet to the dome and wakes up a little later with no ill effects.
* ThatPoorCat: Kenzi sets up several early warning systems in case a group of Underfae come back. One of them results in cat making the standard tortured screech.
* ThisIsMyHuman: Various fae are shown essentially declaring humans to be their property; Lauren is essentially a slave to the Ash, and Bo had to “officially” claim Kenzi as hers to protect Kenzi from being preyed on by other fae (even if Bo and her fae allies all accept that Kenzi is Bo’s friend rather than her property). Some fae appear to just employ humans in a more formal manner, such as the Morrigan running a talent agency where she feeds on some of her clients but none of them appear to know what she is. One episode saw a case where a human father had adopted a young fae where his son didn’t know what he was; once the two came in contact with wider Fae culture, Dyson convinced Lachlan to allow the boy to remain with his human father.
* AThreesomeIsHot:
** Bo with a married Fae couple, then later with Lambert and another female playmate.
** The wife from the first couple later reveals that she and her husband have threesomes fairly often, as it keeps their century old marriage interesting.
** Hale at one point claims to have had one, with a [[TwinThreesomeFantasy Gemini]]. Even [[TheCasanova Dyson's]] impressed.
* TearsOfBlood: All the sick people in episode 6 of season 1.
* ThisIsGonnaSuck: The only way to get a banshee to reveal who they've wailed for and when the person will die is to force it out of them since the information is hidden in their unconscious mind. Bo has to force-feed the banshee pureed liver (the iron causes the necessary reaction) and though the banshee is willing to go along with it, she's not too happy.
* ThisIsNoTimeToPanic: A variation occurs in the premiere of, after Kenzi realizes that Bo did in fact "eat some dude's face".
-->'''Bo:''' Don't freak out.\
'''Kenzi:''' I'm freaking out!\
'''Bo:''' What did I just say?\
'''Kenzi:''' How can I not freak out?
* TokenEvilTeammate: Vex serves as this in the fight against the Garuda. As of Season 3, he seems to have become the token Dark Fae member of Bo's posse, since he can't go back to the Morrigan.
* ToServeMan: Certain types of Fae are carrion eaters:
** Baba Yaga.
** Lichs--who actually feed on knowledge, which they prefer to glean from resurrecting dead humans.
** Aswangs but they only eat dead humans. Seeing as they can also destroy any diseases that the body had they make for effective plague control.
* TookALevelInBadass: Bo has. Dyson points it out after returning in season 2 opener, and she seems far more competent and comfortable in a fight.
** Lauren in Season 4, in a nonphysical way. She is much more assertive and confident. [[spoiler:Being able to make ''the Morrigan'' human definitely shows how many levels she's ascended]].
* TookALevelInKindness: Flashbacks in Season 4 show this has happened over time to Dyson and Trick. Dyson was a philanderer and conman, and Trick [[spoiler:as the Blood King]] was something of a cruel and petty tyrant.
** Dyson has also gotten considerably nicer to Lauren to over the years.
* TooMuchInformation: In "Faes Wide Shut," Lauren explains to Trick that she's trying to find a new sexual partner for Bo to help her curb her hunger. The look on Trick's face is indescribable.
-->'''Trick:''' So... many... glasses. Must... polish.
* ToplessnessFromTheBack: Both Bo and Lauren get many shots like this. The first one is in the pilot episode, when we see Bo from behind when Lauren is performing a medical examination on her.
* TrueCompanions: Bo, Kenzi, Dyson, Lauren, Trick, Hale. Usually referred to by Bo as her "family".
* TwoWordsAddedEmphasis:
** When Trick is wondering how to attract more people to his bar, after Bingo failed, all Lauren has to say is:
--->'''Lauren:''' Two words, Trick: mechanical bull.
** In "Fae-de To Black" after a sex session between Lauren and Bo, Bo describes the sex in one word: "epic":
--->'''Bo:''' One word… '''epic.'''
* TwoWordsICantCount: Bo, in episode "The Mourning After", tries to recover from her miscounting by claiming the last three words were hyphenated, which makes them a single word.
-->'''Bo:''' Two words: Lauren kiss-my-ass. (Takes shot) Lot of hyphens in that last one.
* TyrantTakesTheHelm:
** [[spoiler:Lachlan]] manages to make himself look worse than the old guy pretty quickly. He even gives a variation of the "there will be changes" line!
** Inverted with [[spoiler:Trick, the Blood King, who chose to live out his life in obscurity as a humble barkeep]].
* UndyingLoyalty: Wolf-fae are extremely loyal to their pack and their king. It took a massive betrayal by his king for Dyson to leave his service and the other members of the pack still protected the king even though they knew what happened.
* UriahGambit: The king of Dyson's old pack sent Dyson's best friend to be killed so he could have the friend's lover for himself.
* UrbanFantasy
* VampireDetectiveSeries: Succubus instead of vampire but close enough, although the focus of the series is not on the detective part so much either.
* VapourWear:
** The dress Kenzi wears to [[spoiler:her wedding in Valhalla]] has a completely bare back and the top part is completely transparent in front, except for some opaque fabric over her breasts. This is unusual for Kenzi, who normally doesn't show much skin.
** Many of the Morrigan's outfits make it very obvious that she's not wearing a bra, often by showing a NavelDeepNeckline.
** Often inverted by Bo, who likes wearing a visible bra under tops that normally would be worn without one.
* VillainousCrossdresser: [[spoiler:The Warden of Hecuba Prison]] has been pretending to be female so he can get Amazons to work for him and assist him with his baby-selling scheme.
* VitriolicBestBuds: This is the Morrigan and Vex's relationship, until he pisses her off too much. Lauren and Dyson eventually become this.
* VoiceOfTheLegion:
** Bo after [[spoiler:draining the life force from a room full of people, all at once, to save Lauren.]]
** It happens again before she [[spoiler:drains Kenzi, Lauren, Trick and Stella to save Dyson]].
** And again in "Dark Horse", sounding significantly more demonic [[spoiler:probably because she's being controlled by her father.]]
* TheWatcher: The Nain Rouge.
* TheWatson: Bo doesn't have a clue about the Fae or how Fae Society works, and frequently needs things explained to her.
* WeaksauceWeakness: Dyson's sense of smell is apparently weakened significantly by [[spoiler:kitty litter]]. Bo is appropriately incredulous.
** Lauren defeats the mermaids in "Waves" with ''[[spoiler:tap water]]''. This is justified, as they are after all saltwater creatures, but the justification does not make it any less of a pathetic weakness.
* WellDoneSonGuy: A rare son to mother example, Massimo to [[spoiler:the Morrigan]].
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Lachlan. [[spoiler:He's trying to stop the Garuda from killing everyone. He admits his horrible treatment of Lauren was to test Bo, and seems to genuinely regret it.]]
* WeCanRuleTogether: [[spoiler:Aife]] to Bo in the season 1 finale, [[spoiler:Dr. Taft]] to Lauren in the season 3 finale. [[spoiler:Neither work, but Lauren plays along until it's later revealed she screwed him over]].
* WhamEpisode: Episode 3x12 "Hail, Hale"--[[spoiler:Lauren is suckered into helping a ring of humans who are trying to steal/acquire fae powers by kidnapping fae, one of whom is Dyson. Hale's tenure as the Ash is cut short by a vote of no confidence engineered by the Morrigan. Hale declares his feelings for Kenzi. Fae-aligned humans are declared terrorists and sentenced to death, starting with Kenzi. Bo discovers that Tamsin is working against her, even as she has been shot and is bleeding out while trying to find Lauren and Dyson. Trick is kidnapped. And it turns out that one of the human conspirators' prisoners is Bo's mother, Aife, who is suffering serious SanitySlippage.]]
** Also season 2 episode 13, ''Barometz Trick Pressure'', in which [[spoiler:we meet Season 2's BigBad, the Garuda, meanwhile Bo attempts to assassinate Lachlan, only for him to reveal that his JerkAss behavior has all been an elaborate act to test Bo, after which he asks her to be his champion in a war against the Garuda, which he knew all along was coming.]]
** "End of a Line". As if the episode title wasn't foreboding enough, [[spoiler:Hale--the heir of the Zamora clan--is KilledOffForReal]]. It's made so much worse in that the entire episode emphasized how little death mattered when several dead Fae are raised as revenants, and that [[spoiler:Massimo, Hale's killer, survived due to possessing the Twig of Zamora]].
* WhamLine: Throughout one episode, Kenzi's clingy tendencies towards Bo shoot up to eleven. Then, at the end, in regards to some food she just ate;
-->[[spoiler:'''Bo:''' ''[wigs out and pins Kenzi against a wall]'' And ''covered'' in peanuts, to which you are deathly allergic. Now tell me, bitch, where the hell is Kenzi?]]
* WhatBeautifulEyes: Ksenia Solo, who plays Kenzi, has very striking eyes, which are particularly noticeable due to the heavy eyeshadow she wears.
* WhatCouldPossiblyGoWrong: Bo says this before her NotADate with Lauren in Season 1. It of course immediately cuts to a woman preparing soup, and then putting a human foot in it. The woman later wakes when she has TearsOfBlood. Subverted however, in that her time with Lauren goes perfectly; and the woman only becomes a factor the next morning.
* WhatDidIDoLastNight: Well, Kenzi, you invoked Baba Yaga and cursed Dyson.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: What happened to [[spoiler:The First Ash]]?
** He either never woke up from his coma, or was thrown into dishonor. Or died offscreen.
* WhereTheHellIsSpringfield: The city where the show takes place. It's not even clear what country it's in: it's close to Louisiana (as mentioned in 3x02), yet the characters lapse into Canadianisms, such as Bo saying "Young Conservatives" in 1x03 rather than "Young Republicans."
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Why did it have to be Baba Yaga, in Kenzi's case.
* WinYourFreedom: The stag of the hunt to decide the new Ash can win his or her freedom by ringing the bell, with all prior crimes being wiped away by their participation. The contestants for the title need to kill them before that.
** CondemnedContestant: Trick states the game is designed so that the stag won't win, and no stag ever has. They try to make it easier by having Hale, who won't hurt her, be one of the hunters. [[spoiler:They also have her lover, who can turn invisible be there to help. Ultimately, she is still shot right before she ring the bell, so they have Lauren [[RevivalLoophole revive her]] in a LoopholeAbuse.]]
* WretchedHive: Brazenwood. Even the Dark Fae Tamsin is horrified when she learns that's the destination Balzac the Spriggan is hauling them to.
* WrittenByTheWinners: Trick says this is the only reason history has a favorable opinion of the Blood King. Given the Blood King's powers, he may mean that literally. [[spoiler:And seeing as how Trick is the Blood King, this doubles as him acknowledging his own crimes/mistakes.]]
* WrittenInAbsence: Kenzi is on a road trip with her new boyfriend in "Midnight Lamp" and that is made clear right at the start of the episode to explain her absence (and was set up in the episode before).
** Hale has been largely absent in Season 3, due to K.C. Collins being busy with other projects. The show handles this, by having him [[spoiler:too busy with the duties of the Ash to interact with the crew.]]
* WrongGenreSavvy:
** Bo laughs off Kenzi's initial belief that she is a vampire, explaining that she feeds on life force, not blood. Somehow, in the ''ten years'' she's been on the run, she never considered to simply search the words "Sex-vampire" on the internet, which would have told her that she was a succubus a long time ago.
** Bo deduces that a lich stored his soul in a portrait and just like in Literature/ThePictureOfDorianGray she has to destroy it to kill the lich. When she cuts the picture up with a knife [[spoiler:the lich merely laughs at her]].
** Lauren in "Turn to Stone." Once she realizes she's a prisoner of the Fae (again), she quickly deduces that she is being tested. [[spoiler:She thinks Hale is her captor, but it's actually the Morrigan.]]
* {{Yandere}}: In the episode "Faetal Attraction", sweet [[spoiler:Jenny]] turns out to be a chainsaw-wielding psycho. Anyone else notice the Bluebeard shoutout? [[spoiler:Except of course she has her previous objects-of-obsessions' skulls in her "secret" cupboard.]]
** Kenzi starts acting ridiculously possessive of Bo in the an early episode of Season 3, after being pulled down into a shadow at the end of the previous episode. [[spoiler:It is soon revealed that she's been replaced by a Kitsune, who acted in a similar way to her former Kitsune sisters.]]
* YiddishAsASecondLanguage: Mayer is an AlterKocker and peppers his dialogue with a lot of Yiddish.
* YouCantFightFate: [[spoiler:No matter what you do, if a banshee wails for you, then you're as good as dead.]]
* YouHaveGotToBeKiddingMe: Lauren says this when she learns the type of Fae whose baby she has to deliver, with good reason. She covered herself with a pungent musk to pass as Fae, and if she doesn't wash it off the odor will cause the baby to ''explode.''
* YouNeverAsked: In "[=ConFaegion=]" Lauren reveals she spent some time as a doctor in [[spoiler:Afghanistan]]. When Kenzi asks why she never mentioned this before, Lauren responds with this. Their mutual animosity makes a more acceptable reason than most.
* YouShallNotPass: Dyson, Trick, and Tamsin to [[spoiler:the Priapus's forces]] in "Dark Horse."
* YoureCuteWhenYoureAngry: A variation. After Bo confesses that [[spoiler:she was forced to feed on Dyson]], she begs Lauren to say something. Lauren stares at Bo for several seconds, looking like she's either going to cry or yell at Bo, before pulling her in for a kiss:
-->'''Bo:''' If this is you angry, then I need to tell you about the time I borrowed your favorite pair of earrings and then lost one of them.\
'''Lauren:''' ''[annoyed huff]'' I love you.
* YoureNotMyType: When Kenzi wonders if Saskia (another succubus [[spoiler:and later revealed to really be Aife, Bo's mother]]) and Bo are going to go at it, Saskia mentions that she's not attracted to other succubi.

!! The webisodes provide examples of:
* AllTrollsAreDifferent: Episode 1 features a CampGay Internet Troll.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: [[spoiler:Bruce]] is hinted to be one.
* OmniscientCouncilOfVagueness: The Una Mens. Later revealed to be a [[spoiler:DiscOneFinalBoss]].
* {{Troll}}: Internet Trolls are actually a type of Fae, a subtype of the Troll species.
* TrollBridge: Kenzi and Bruce encounter an Internet Troll who was demoted to guarding a bridge.
