Each season's arc was meant to line up with its corresponding book. However, this ultimately only worked for the first two seasons, as ''Literature/AStormOfSwords'' ([[DoorStopper which in pagecount equals]] ''[[DoorStopper the entirety]]'' of the ''Lord of the Rings'' trilogy) was eventually split into two seasons, with ''Literature/AFeastForCrows'' and ''Literature/ADanceWithDragons'' bleeding into both Seasons 4 and 5. Martin himself wrote an episode in each of the show's first four seasons. Starting with the sixth season, the show [[OvertookTheManga overtook the books]], as Martin has yet to publish the sixth novel, ''The Winds of Winter''. Benioff & Weiss were informed by Martin of the basic plotline of how the saga ends when writing the remaining seasons.

28	Following the conclusion of the series, HBO has greenlit two spin-off shows based on materials in the ''A Song of Ice and Fire'' franchise. The first, ''Series/HouseOfTheDragon'', is a partial adaptation of ''Literature/FireAndBlood'', focusing on the Dance of the Dragons civil war, which occurs two centuries before the events of ''Game of Thrones''. It was given a straight-to-series order in 2019, and premiered in 2022. The second, ''A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight'', is an adaptation of ''Literature/TalesOfDunkAndEgg'', which focuses on the titular Hedge Knight, Ser Duncan "Dunk" the Tall, and his squire, a young King Aegon V "Egg" Targaryen. The project was greenlit by HBO in 2023.

30	Aside from the above two, HBO has been considering more potential spin-offs. ''House of the Dragon'' was originally pitched alongside four other projects: ''Bloodmoon'' (about the Long Night), ''Flea Bottom'' (about the poorest sector of King's Landing), ''10,000 Ships'' (about Princess Nymeria's migration to Dorne), and ''9 Voyages'' (about the travels of Corlys Velaryon). ''Bloodmoon'' was actually greenlit before ''House of the Dragon'' was, and managed to reach the pilot stage before HBO decided not to move forward with it, while ''Flea Bottom'' was discarded before it received a pilot order. In June 2022, Creator/KitHarington, who played Jon Snow, revealed that HBO is considering a sequel series revolving around his character. Following the success of the first season of ''House of the Dragon'', a prequel focusing on Aegon the Conqueror is reportedly in early stages of development as of April 2023. Finally, there are three adult animated series in development for Creator/{{Max}}, one of which will focus on the East Asian-like Golden Empire of Yi Ti.
