->''"Once upon a time, there was a magical place. Where Beamers glistened in the sun, and all the teenagers were white and in their 30s..."''
-->-- '''Roger''', ''WesternAnimation/AmericanDad'', "[[Recap/AmericanDadS2E5StanOfArabia Stan of Arabia]]"

''Beverly Hills, 90210'' was a TeenDrama that is credited with [[TropeCodifier codifying the genre as we know it today]] and gained immense popularity during the early 1990s. It ran on Creator/{{Fox}} for ten years (from 1990 to 2000), and had all but changed its entire principal cast by the end of the show's run.

The show focused primarily on the Walsh family, particularly fraternal twins Brandon (Creator/JasonPriestley) and Brenda Walsh (Creator/ShannenDoherty), who had just moved into Beverly Hills and were (at least initially) suffering a certain degree of culture shock. The action also included the twins' friends; the brooding bad boy Dylan [=McKay=], the goofy 'big man on campus' Steve Sanders, the bookworm and school paper editor Andrea Zuckerman, the AlphaBitch turned LovableAlphaBitch Kelly Taylor, [[TheDitz the ditz]] Donna Martin, and the dorky freshman turned aspiring musician David Silver. The show began essentially as an American, more glamorized version of (the original [[Series/DegrassiJuniorHigh eighties]]) ''Franchise/{{Degrassi}}'' (of which it is rumored Creator/AaronSpelling nearly adapted instead), adopting its format of tackling social issues an episode at a time during its first season (and to an extent the second season), but by Season 3 and especially after the cast graduated from high school, it became more of a PrimeTimeSoap.

The show's casting includes some of the most dramatic examples of DawsonCasting in recent memory (and this show predates the [[Series/DawsonsCreek trope namer]]), to the point where many sites often refer to the trope as "90210 Syndrome". Creator/LukePerry was 24 when he began playing Dylan as a junior; even worse, Creator/IanZiering was 26 playing 16-year-old Steve Sanders and Creator/GabrielleCarteris was 29 playing 16-year-old Andrea Zuckerman. Only Creator/BrianAustinGreen (David), Douglas Emerson (Scott) and Creator/ToriSpelling (Donna) were real high school-aged teenagers playing their age.

It is debated when the show declined in quality; most agree that it declined after season 3, which was when the cast graduated from high school, but some put the beginning the decline to the beginning of season 5, after Brenda left. Some even argue the show really hit its stride post-high school.

Had a SpinOff in ''Series/MelrosePlace'' (which itself had a less successful spin off in the short-lived ''Series/ModelsInc'') and SequelSeries simply titled ''90210'' which ran from 2008-2013 on Creator/TheCW. The new series is mostly focused on a new cast of characters, though Donna and Brenda have made cameo appearances and Kelly is an important recurring character. One of the main characters of the reboot, Erin (Silver), appeared as a plot point in the original series as Kelly's baby half-sister. A second revival was announced in February 2019, that featured [[AdamWesting fictionalized versions of themselves]] trying to get a reboot of the series on the air. Sadly, Luke Perry —who was announced to be showing up in a limited role— suffered a massive stroke on the same day of the announcement, and ultimately died a week later. The remaining cast members continued the project in honor of him.

!!The original series contains examples of:

[[folder:Tropes (A-G)]]
* AdvertisedExtra:
** In the early episodes of Season 1, Donna was initially just a SatelliteCharacter to Brenda and Kelly, with her characteristics being underdeveloped and different from the ones she was known for. By the end of the season, Donna's traits started to become clearer, and started branching out for her own storylines.
** In Season 1, David and Scott were nothing more than PluckyComicRelief, and hardly interacted with the other, older teen characters. Eventually, by season 2, David formed into the group, while Scott was sidelined for most of the season until "The Next 50 Years," [[spoiler: when he is killed off]].
** Andrea's husband Jesse, and Brandon's boss Nat. Both were credited main characters, [[SatelliteCharacter though they were usually used as means to serve the other, more prominent characters]]. Nevertheless, they did have some storylines, though were comparatively minor to the others. Even more surprising, considering that Jesse was the [[TokenMinority sole minority character in the main cast]].
* AnyoneCanDie: David's friend Scott and Dylan's girlfriend Toni Marchette.
* ArtisticLicenseMedicine: In one episode, Kelly and another girl are burned in a fire. In the following, people visiting the both of them in the hospital are not wearing sterile gowns over their clothes, an absolute must in any burn unit to prevent infection.
* ArtisticLicenseUniversityAdmissions:
** Steve gets into CaliforniaUniversity (which, in-universe, ''is'' the actual name), despite his terrible grades, his [[BookDumb book dumb]] personality, and he seemed to have only one reference from his principal. Additionally, he broke into his school's computer system to change his grades (admittedly with the help of a BlackAndNerdy freshman and was actually ''expelled'' from West Beverly High for the incident (albeit temporarily). And by the frequent remarks by other characters, it seems as if California University was a very hard school to get into.
** Ditto for non-studious students like Kelly and Donna. Consider the fact that they are wealthy (hence connections, including Steve's father being an alumni of California University), though in reality, it may take more than just connections to get into the school they want.
** Also, Brenda entered the same school after leaving the University of Minnesota earlier in Season 4. She may have been accepted to CU earlier, though since classes had started at that school, it doesn't really make sense since Brenda should've at least applied for late admission, though no such mechanics are ever mentioned.
* AsianAndNerdy: Janet Sosna, whose parents are Japanese Americans (the actress Creator/LindsayPrice herself was half-Korean).
* AttemptedRape:
** Kelly is almost raped at a high school Halloween party by a fellow student.
** A few years later, when she's addicted to cocaine in college, Kelly is almost raped by her drug dealer but fights him off with a bottle of wine.
** Donna is almost raped by a StalkerWithACrush at her own home [[spoiler:but luckily this is prevented by David coming in just in time to save her]].
* TheBeautifulElite: It seems like everyone in Beverly Hills is hot as the sun!
* BetaCouple: David and Donna in the earlier seasons.
* BettyAndVeronica:
** Brenda (Betty) and Kelly (Veronica) with Dylan (Archie).
** {{Gender Flip}}ped with Brandon (Betty) and Dylan (Veronica) with Kelly (Archie).
* BookDumb: [[DumbBlonde Steve and Donna]] weren't exactly the sharpest tools in the shed when it came to academics, though found their niches in different things.
* BoyfriendBlockingDad: Papa Walsh was this for Brenda, while Brandon got a lot more slack to the point of DoubleStandard and [[{{Hypocrite}} Hypocrisy]]--he's completely blithe and matter-of-fact about Brandon losing his virginity while ''in the house'', merely feet away from his sleeping parents, but completely flips out upon finding out that Brenda is sleeping with Dylan and flips out even more when Brenda makes it clear that Dylan did not force or seduce her.
* BrainyBrunette: [[TheSmartGirl Andrea]] and Brandon fit this to a T. Also Brenda and [[BadassBookworm Dylan]].
* BreakingTheFourthWall: In the episode where Clare and David film themselves in the sack (which accidentally makes it's way to the Martin residence), David makes a quip to Clare about how "we're on TV every day".
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: Dylan and Brenda almost fit this to a T. While Brenda was far from gentle (she may have been a bit naive at first), Dylan became the brooding "bad boy" that made him into a BreakoutCharacter.
* TheBusCameBack: [[spoiler: Andrea, the Walsh parents, Valerie, Ray, and Brandon]]. Oh, and [[spoiler: Dylan (this time for good)]].
* CaliforniaUniversity: In this universe, it is the actual name.
* CelebrityParadox: [[Franchise/ChildsPlay Chuckie]] is referenced in a season 2 episode "Chuckie's Back". Christine Elise, who portrayed Brandon's girlfriend Emily Valentine for several episodes during the season (including the episode that aired before this one), starred in the [[Film/ChildsPlay2 second film of that franchise, which came out a year before.]]
** One late season episode has a subplot where Brandon and Steve watch Creator/AaronSpelling produced shows, which doubles as a ShoutOut...to the creator's own previous works.
* TheCharmer: Dylan, who was very lucky with women.
* ChickMagnet: Mainly Brandon, Sometimes also {{lampshade|Hanging}}d by other characters. And also Dylan to a lesser extent as well.
* CodeSilver: In season 7, Donna's stalker reveals himself at the school's news station, and holds everyone (including Brandon and his then-girlfriend Tracy) hostage with a gun. Luckily, no one is hurt, except maybe Donna.
* CollegeIsHighSchoolPart2: The main characters basically shared the exact same classes and still found the time to remain as close knit as ever.
* CommutingOnABus: Nat popped in and out for the show's final season, [[AdvertisedExtra even though he had very little to do as a main character]].
* ContrivedCoincidence:
** The season three episode "Midlife...Now What?" has several:
*** When Brenda and Kelly are getting back massages at a spa, one of masseuses recounts a story of her two friends fighting over the same guy, which fractured their relationship. [[PunctuatedForEmphasis What...are...the...odds?]]
*** In the same episode, Brenda learns that [[spoiler: David's dad Mel Silver, then-married to Jackie Taylor, Kelly's mom,]] is having an affair when she overhears a conversation between two unrelated masseuses.
*** Both Cindy and Jim, from friends and associates, gain the same book, the titular "Midlife...Now What?" which seems to be the go-to book on how to deal with a midlife crisis.
** The season four episode "The Time Has Come Today". Brenda finds a notebook in the floorboards of her bedroom, and discovers that it was written by a girl who lived in her home during the Vietnam War. By sheer coincidence, the girl had a twin brother and the same amount of friends as Brenda (sans Andrea), attended California University, and had a "Bad Boy" boyfriend that her father disapproved of, and all of her problems [[PlotParallel seem to mirror the problems Brenda is having with her friends at the time]].
* ConvenientMiscarriage: In season 7, Kelly discovers she's pregnant with her and Brandon's child. After considering an abortion, Kelly decides to keep the child, only to have a miscarriage. [[LawOfInverseFertility She's then told she has endometriosis and probably can't have any children, but the sequel series introduces her son.]]
* CripplingTheCompetition: Incensed when Brenda gets the lead in the school play, her rival first starts rumors that she used the CastingCouch to get the part, then suggests to her boyfriend that he physically harm her so that she'll have to give it up.
* DaddysGirl: Brenda to Jim Walsh, and even though they fought, they really did love each other.
* DamselInDistress: Kelly Taylor to the extreme. Raped, burned, placed in a cult, pregnant/miscarried, addicted to cocaine, sleeping with everyone (but David), shot, [[ButtMonkey and so on]].
* DateRapeAverted: While at a costume party on Halloween in season 2, Kelly is nearly raped, which is averted by Donna and Brenda.
* DatingDoSiDo: Almost everyone in the main cast dated each other. Most notably, there were both a Brenda-Dylan-Kelly and a Dylan-Kelly-Brandon love triangle at different points; Valerie had relationships with Steve, Dylan and David; David dated Donna, Valerie and Clare (who later dated Steve), etc.
* DeathIsCheap: [[spoiler: Dylan's dad Jack [=McKay=], despite the fact he was ''blown up'' in season 3, shows up alive in season 10 (explained In Universe by that his death was a cover-up by the FBI to put him in a witness protection program)]].
* DemotedToExtra:
** Jim and Cindy Walsh's role on the show diminished as their children went off to college, and they were basically there to react to whatever they did. Eventually, both were PutOnABus (or plane) to Hong Kong at the end of season 5.
** Scott Scanlon was prominent as David's best friend in season 1, though when David got involved with the group, he left him in the dust. In season 2, he only appears in four episodes before [[spoiler: [[DroppedABridgeOnHim being]] [[KilledOffForReal killed off]] ]].
* DerailingLoveInterests: [[Creator/MatthewPorretta Dan]] starts out as a sweet boyfriend to Andrea, then abruptly turns into a controlling jerk. To top it off, he turns into a racist too, making snide comments about her next boyfriend, who's Hispanic.
* DescentIntoAddiction: A recurring theme on the show. Done with [[spoiler: Brandon (gambling), Dylan (alcohol/drugs), Kelly (cocaine), Donna (sleeping pills), and Noah (alcohol)]].
* DidTheyOrDidntThey: After botching her audition for the lead in the school play, Brenda shows up at the director's house in a sexy dress, insisting that she's perfect for the role. He says, "Okay, show me what you've got." as it fades to black. By the next episode, Brenda has the part. But when rumors spread that the director has a habit of seducing his students, it doesn't take long for people to assume that Brenda employed the CastingCouch to get the part. Brenda's defensive refusal to directly answer the question doesn't help her case either. It turns out that they didn't, she merely went to his house to re-audition and that the sexy dress was her costume.
* DinnerOrderFlub: While in Paris, Brenda and Donna order "veal". Unfortunately, the English word "veal" sounds like the French word "cerveau". After being served their meal, the girls are horrified to learn they're eating. . .calf brains (a well known delicacy in France, but obviously not in the US).
* DomesticAbuse: Ray Pruitt repeatedly abuses Donna. Most infamously, he pushes her down a flight of stairs, semi-accidentally. Also used in several [[VerySpecialEpisode very special episodes]].
* DroppedABridgeOnHim: [[spoiler:Scott Scanlon]] was part of the main cast in Season 1 but dies very abruptly when he accidentally shoots himself with a gun.
* DumpThemAll: This is how Kelly resolves the Dylan/Brandon love triangle. "I choose me!"
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness:
** It started as an episodic high school drama mainly focusing on the Walsh twins. Each episode had its own story and aesop, and played out basically like a glitzier version of ''Series/DegrassiHigh''. From season two onwards, the plotlines started to arch over several episodes and the friends of the Walsh kids were given some limelight as well.
** Also, during the first season, the opening was ''very'' different. It was a series of scattered scenes with the main characters hanging out in Beverly Hills rather than the OpeningCreditsCastParty used from season 2 onwards. The theme was also arranged in a typically-late-80s dance-pop style, unlike the harder-edged, guitar-driven rock theme that would come into use later.
** Dylan doesn't appear in the pilot, despite being the show's BreakoutCharacter, and appeared in less episodes than the other main characters during the first season.
** Donna Martin was originally "Donna Morgan" and had a different personality altogether during season 1.
** Donna and Kelly's mothers in their first appearances are completely different from their later incarnations (not to mention [[TheOtherDarrin played by different actresses than the regular ones]]); the more laid-back and fashionable Nancy Martin is a far-cry from the strict and conservative Felice Martin, for example.
* TheEighties: The first two seasons, but some shades of it are seen in season three and four. After season two, grunge fashion began to replace the bright colours and teased hair of seasons one and two. {{Justified|Trope}}, because 80s pop culture still persisted into 1993 and wasn't entirely phased out until about 1994-95.
* EightiesHair: All of the characters in season one and two (albeit a bit more muted in season two) but it disappeared throughout season three. Ironically, the character of Kelly, most obsessed with superficial things, kept her Madonna-inspired 80s hair and makeup into season four, but finally ditched it by season 5 for a post-grunge inspired look.
* FakeGuestStar: Kathleen Robertson (Clare) in season 5, plus Jason Wiles (Colin), Creator/EmmaCaulfield (Susan), and Creator/CameronBancroft (Joe) in season 6. Most appear in over 25 episodes of their respective seasons, though still placed under "guest star" billing (though Kathleen Robertson was PromotedToOpeningTitles come season 6). Especially egregious in the case of Wiles, who appears in every episode in season 6.
** Luke Perry is credited as "special guest star" for the final two seasons though is, for all intents and purposes, a main character.
** Joe E. Tata appears in a majority of the episodes of the first five seasons. He's PromotedToOpeningTitles come season 6.
* FakePregnancy: Valerie claims to be pregnant in order to extort money from her married lover, but it's not for child support, it's for her supposed abortion and to not blab to his wife.
* FalseRapeAccusation:
** Zigzagged. Valerie accuses Noah of having drugged and raped her. Everyone, knowing the ManipulativeBastard she is, thinks she is lying about this, especially when she files a civil suit for a large sum of money against him. Turns out she ''was'' drugged with roofies, and she truly thought Noah had raped her, but that in fact she had been Roofied not by Noah but by someone else. She wins the civil suit, but upon finding out Noah is innocent, she gives him back the money.
** Laura claims Steve raped her. It's not clear if she genuinely felt violated because he both blew her off after they slept together and turned out to have been cheating on his girlfriend with her or if she was just trying to get back at him for both of these transgressions, but either way, Kelly gets her to admit that she never told him "no".
** During their senior year, Scott Scanlon's troubled sister Sue accuses a teacher of making advances to her. Thanks to how the scene was filmed, it is genuinely uncertain who is lying. We finally learn that the girl was being molested by her uncle and that when she confided in the teacher, she mistook his comforting gesture as an advance.
* FamilyRelationshipSwitcheroo: [[RememberTheNewGuy Gina]] was introduced in the show's ninth season as Donna's cousin, and caused much havoc within the group. In season 10, the audience discovered that Donna's father had an affair with Gina's mother in the 1970s, resulting in her birth, making Gina her half-sister. Downplayed example as Gina is still Donna's cousin. Donna's father, Dr. Martin, discovered this, and was quick to accept Gina as his daughter, though [[spoiler: he later died soon after]].
* FlushTheEvidence: David is holding a knapsack full of drugs for a friend of his when Dylan arrives at his apartment to warn him the cops are on the way. They promptly flush everything down the toilet just in time. (In RealLife, it's highly likely the toilet would have clogged, given the amount they were flushing, as well as the plastic bags).
* FlyingSaucer: David and Clare went searching for a UFO, though they didn't see anything...but the audience did!
* FormerChildStar: Steve's former childhood enemy Chuckie Wilson, a co-star on Steve's mother Samantha's show ''The Hartley House'', downplays this. He's a teenager, seemingly physically well-adjusted, and he's since left the industry (on account of his parents), only to be drawn back for a potential show reunion. However, Chuckie's a total {{Jerkass}} to Steve and has been since they were children.
* FourthDateMarriage: Andrea and Jesse's marriage--which wouldn't even have happened had she not been pregnant--is a disaster--it's incredibly rocky for the first year, with mutual infidelities, and although they commit to making a new start when they leave town, when Andrea returns for a visit, she reveals that they're divorcing.
*** Her affair gets this too. She falls in love with the guy and wants to leave Jesse for him. He. . .has no intention of leaving his wife and is just enjoying having some fun on the side.
* FourGirlEnsemble:
** The girls:
*** Donna was the sweet naive one
*** Brenda was the DeadpanSnarker
*** Kelly was the pretty one
*** Andrea was the smart one
** Gender-flipped with:
*** David - sweet / naive one (he was pretty much a Ditz in the earlier seasons)
*** Dylan - snarky one (he had been through a lot already by the time the series started and the other male characters were still comparatively naive, and he had already become a cynic as a result)
*** Steve - sexy (he was played as a straight jock, and not too smart either)
*** Brandon - smart (he did best academically and was a high-achiever).
* FourTemperamentEnsemble:
** Steve (sanguine), Dylan (choleric), Brandon (melancholic), and David (phlegmatic).
** Donna (sanguine), Andrea (choleric), Kelly (melancholic), and Brenda (phlegmatic).
* FreudianExcuse: Most of the show's "damaged" characters had one:
** Dylan (with a con artist dad, New Age hippie mom)
** Kelly ([[DisappearedDad deadbeat dad]], [[AlcoholicParent alcoholic mom]])
** Steve (oft-neglectful [[HappilyAdopted adoptive actor parents]], angsty about his adoption)
** David (MissingMom, philanderer dad)
** Noah (super business-oriented dad, too-important-to-bother mom)
** Valerie ([[spoiler:[[AbusiveDad abusive father who raped her constantly]], a mom [[NeverMyFault who always blamed Val for everything]] ]])
** Gina (poor, GoldDigger mom; absent dad who turned out to be [[spoiler: Donna's dad, with whom her mom had an affair]])
** Ray (abusive dad who later left the family, alcoholic mom).
* FreudianSlip: "I like your butt... (beat)...I mean your bike."
* FreudianTrio: Before David and Andrea joined the group the three boys and girls fitted this.
** Id: Steve and Donna
** Ego: Brenda and Brandon
** Superego: Dylan and Kelly.
* GayAesop: Used in several [[VerySpecialEpisode very special episodes]] on the show (e.g. "Blind Spot" which was viewed at three gay and lesbian youth centers in L.A. during the '90s), as homosexuality had started to become more accepted in mainstream media of the time.
* GayBarReveal: The aforementioned "Blind Spot" starts with Steve and Brandon arriving at a gay coffee shop, which promptly freaks Steve out when he realizes that the clientel is exclusively men.
* GirlOfTheWeek: Brandon almost had a different girlfriend every week during season 1 and some of season 2.
* GoodGirlsAvoidAbortion: Andrea gets pregnant and despite consciously deciding to have an abortion, citing the fact that she's only 18, has only just started dating the baby's father, and is only a freshman in college, she changes her mind at the last minute and has the baby (the RealitySubtext is that Andrea's actress Gabrielle Carteris was pregnant in RealLife and the writers decided to ThrowItIn).
* GoodParents: Jim and Cindy Walsh were the only ones consistently there for their children during their dramatic crises.
* GrievousBottleyHarm: When Kelly [[AttemptedRape almost gets raped]], she smashes a bottle of wine on her attacker's head to fend him off.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tropes (H-M)]]
* HappilyAdopted: Steve, for the most part, though he tries to seek out his birth parents when he starts to doubt whether his mother loves him. He discovers that his birth mother has died, [[spoiler: and his "adoptive" father Rush had been his birth father all along.]]
* HappilyMarried: While both were briefly tempted for affairs in season 1, Jim and Cindy Walsh are the epitome of this trope.
* HighSchool: The show is best known for its high school years (seasons 1-3).
* ImAManICantHelpIt: When caught cheating, Dr. Silver attempts to use this excuse on Jackie. She doesn't buy it and it ends their marriage (the first time).
* IncestSubtext: According to [=IMDb=]: On the special, ''Beverly Hills, 90210: 10-Year High School Reunion'' (2003) Creator/ShannenDoherty revealed that the hardest thing about doing the show was pretending that Jason Priestley, whom she referred to as "being so hot", was her brother. She then revealed that, years later, people often approach her and ask her about the "weird incestuous vibe" between Brandon and Brenda, their characters. She said her response is always "Uh-huh, you better believe it!".
* IncompatibleOrientation:
** Kelly dates a boy named Kyle in the season 2 episode "Summer Storm" who turns out to be gay.
** After surviving a fire together in season 5, Allison falls for Kelly, who gently turns her down.
* InterchangeableAsianCultures: Lindsay Price is half-Korean, but was cast as the ''Japanese'' Janet. [[note]] And previously played ''Chinese'' characters on ''Series/AllMyChildren'' and ''Series/TheBoldAndTheBeautiful''. [[/note]]
* IntimateLotionApplication: In "Shooting Star/American in Paris", while at the beach cabana, Dylan helps Kelly rub sun lotion on her back while she rubs her front, which is a sign of their newfound intimacy, and they discuss their romantic plans for the night while doing this. David arrives and catches them in the act and feels very awkward about intruding.
* InvisibleParents: Andrea's parents Kenny and Gail Zuckerman, who only show up at her wedding.
* ItCameFromBeverlyHills: It is the setting after all.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Kelly, Steve, and Dylan.
* KnownByThePostalAddress: The series was titled after the postal code of town it was set. The series was the TropeCodifier for teen and twentysomething TV dramas of TheNineties.
* LateComingOut: Steve's mother, Samantha, comes out as a lesbian in season 9. Steve is surprised by this, as is Samantha's ex-husband Rush.
* LawOfInverseFertility:
** Kelly gets unintentionally pregnant while in college, even though she uses birth control. This results in a miscarriage and she then finds out she has a medical condition called endometriosis, and is told by the doctor that that will make it very hard for her to ever get pregnant again, which she feels devastated about (although she hadn't planned getting pregnant while still in college, she apparently wanted to have children later in life). [[note]]-- In the sequel/reboot series, she has a son, so apparently she ''did'' have a child at the end though --[[/note]]
** Brenda goes through a pregnancy scare after sleeping with Dylan for the first time, even though they too used birth control.
** Andrea unintentionally gets pregnant in college (and thus eventually has her daughter, Hannah, and marries Jesse).
** Then there's Kelly's mother Jackie, who was surprised when she learned that she was pregnant again while she was dating David's father (whom she married at the end of season 2).
* LoveDodecahedron: David longing for Kelly (resolved when they become step-siblings), who started the show as Steve's ex. During the first two seasons it seemed that they were to become a couple again, which never happened (except for once she got drunk and slept with him). As the show progressed, relationships and hook-ups multiplied: Kelly slept with her best friend's boyfriend, then with her boyfriend's best friend; Clare began virtually stalking Brandon and then having a relationship with David and then with Steve; Valerie slept with Dylan, Steve and David and almost with Brandon once; Gina was with Dylan and then David, who finally married her cousin who was also her half-sister.
* LonelyRichKid: Dylan could be the poster boy for this trope, having no parents living with him, not believing his friends were understanding him completely. It did kind of make him into a {{Woobie}} after awhile.
* MarketBasedTitle: In Brazil, the series is named ''Barrados no Baile'' ("Barred at the Party"). Since [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Recap/BeverlyHills90210S01E01ClassOfBeverlyHills the very first episode]] shows Brenda entering a club using a fake ID and Kelly being barred despite also using one (seen [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEgeQxts1zo&t=41s here]]), a ShoutOut to [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fsbzk8BX_aU a famous 1983 Brazilian song]] was made to reference the fact that all the protagonists are underage and thus legally unable to get into clubs.
* MinnesotaNice: The Walsh family in Season 1, shown to be much more polite and down-to-earth than the Beverly Hills natives.
* MonochromeCasting: Only Mark Damon Espinosa (Jesse) was a main character of color, though was given little to do as a character, [[SatelliteLoveInterest aside from being Andrea's boyfriend-turned-husband]]. Aaron Spelling later said he regretted it. In fact he said it was his greatest regret regarding the show.
* MyBelovedSmother:
** Donna's mother, Felice, was often shown to be extremely arrogant, elitist even, and often disapproved of her daughter's love interests, even setting her up with some who later turned out to be more than meets the eye.
** Dylan's mother, Iris, was a strange combination of this and MissingMom. She had abandoned Dylan and was absent almost all of the time, but ''when'' she suddenly showed up at Dylan's (which she only did occasionally and for short bouts of time), she was dominant towards him and meddling in his life. Most notably, the time she showed up at his house unannounced just after he had broken up with Brenda and gotten in a relationship with Kelly - Iris tried to get him to break up with Kelly and get back with Brenda.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tropes (N-R)]]
* NearRapeExperience:
** Kelly, twice. First during a High School Halloween party by a fellow student (she was wearing a revealing dress and the guy, and, disturbingly, her friends, tried to justify his rape attempt her on her skimpy dress); later in college when she had gotten addicted to drugs, she is kidnapped, tied up, and almost raped by a controlling, manipulative guy selling her cocaine (but she got out of it by smashing a bottle of wine on his head). In addition, she also got ''actually'' raped in a later season.
** Donna has a stalker that manages to get into her bedroom and beat the heck out of her, [[spoiler:but David shows up just then at her apartment to save the day]].
* NiceMeanAndInbetween:
** Main boys trio: quintessential good boy Brandon (nice), bad boy AntiHero Dylan (mean), and brash but easygoing Steve (in-between).
** Main girls trio: Donna is the naive SpoiledSweet one (nice), Kelly goes from AlphaBitch to LovableAlphaBitch (mean), and Brenda is the GirlNextDoor with a snarky rebellious side (in-between).
* NiceGuy:
** Brandon Walsh was [[TheAllAmericanBoy the quintessential all-American boy]].
** Like father, like son - his father Jim Walsh was a cardboard NiceGuy as well, in addition to being played (in the earliest season at least) as an OnlySaneMan - in the sense that he disapproved of the material extravagance and loose parenting methods of the parents of the other teens in Beverly Hills (see also MinnesotaNice).
* TheNineties: Beginning in Season 3, and entirely by Season 5 onward. Despite the extreme DawsonCasting, the show did a great job at keeping up with pop culture, fashion, and hairstyles.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: Dylan [=McKay=] could be a dead ringer for a [[SarcasmMode little-known]] actor named...Creator/JamesDean.
* NoGoingSteady: ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin, with Kelly probably being the worst offender.
* OpeningCreditsCastParty: The opening credits were iconic because of its cast parties and that theme song!
* OutOfContextEavesdropping: David overhears his girlfriend Clare telling her friends "David gave me a fake one" and gets really insecure about his sexual skills, thinking she is referring to faking orgasms. When he finally talks to her about this, [[spoiler:it turns out the conversation was about fur coats and she was refering to a fake fur coat David had given her.]]
* OverTheShoulderCarry: In episode "Spring Dance", Dylan throws Brenda over his shoulder and twirls her when having alone time in a hotel room [[spoiler:right before doing TheirFirstTime]].
* ParentalAbandonment: Zig-zagged. Several of the main characters' parents are absent for long periods, or were hardly mentioned. Examples include Kelly's dad Bill Taylor (sure he was shown, [[DaddyDidntShow only to disappear]] [[ParentalAbandonment for years at a time]]), David's mom Sheila Silver (had mental issues, a nervous breakdown, became homeless, later recovered, only to [[ChuckCunninghamSyndrome disappear again]]), and Dylan's parents Jack and Iris [=McKay=] (at first; they recurred in several episodes in the first four seasons, though never lived with Dylan)
* ParentalIncest: [[spoiler:Valerie is revealed to have been sexually abused by her father]] over a long time.
* ParentalMarriageVeto: Janet's parents initially didn't want their daughter to marry Steve, and they wanted her to marry a [[NiceJewishBoy nice Japanese boy instead]]. They later changed their minds.
* PracticallyDifferentGenerations:
** Kelly and David are both on the verge of their senior year of high school when their half-sister Erin is born.
** Nat's stepdaughter (the daughter of his wife Joan) Lily is an adult when her half-brother Frankie is born...on the day of her mother's wedding to Nat, no less.
** Dylan later learns [[spoiler: he has a younger half-brother Jack - who's a good two decades younger than him - through his father, whom he believed was killed years earlier but actually FakedTheDead, in the final season.]]
* PregnancyScare: Brenda had one after missing her period, which led to her first breakup with Dylan at the start of season 2.
* PrimetimeSoap: What the show later became.
* ProductPlacement: Most noticeable was the Peach Pit '''After Dark''', a club named after and using the iconic flying toaster logo from the Berkeley Systems screensaver series.
* ThePromPlot: Both of their proms were pretty memorable:
** Their junior prom had Andrea worried about her "bland" dress, only for her own to be better than Brenda and Kelly, who are dressed the same and Donna is wearing an uncomfortable, overly fancy dress that she can't even sit in.
** Their senior prom is more infamous, as Brenda and Kelly are now [[LoveTriangle fighting over Dylan]] and Donna gets drunk and ends up being barred from graduation.
* PutOnABus: Numerous examples.
** In season 2, Brandon's girlfriend Emily Valentine (who had an unspecified mental disorder) went to a mental hospital after having a major breakdown in which she stalked Brandon after their breakup and nearly set a gasoline-soaked parade float on fire with her on it. TheBusCameBack in three episodes, afterwards, with Emily having a significantly improved mental state.
** [[spoiler: When Creator/ShannenDoherty left the show, Brenda went back to London to attend college after season 4. Even though her departure was originally described for a year, she didn't come back, unlike many examples of this trope on the show.]]
** Andrea moved to Connecticut to attend Yale with her husband and their daughter, at the end of season 5. TheBusCameBack briefly three years later for their high school reunion.
** The Walsh parents left for Hong Kong the episode after Andrea.
** Ray left town after his trial against Joe in season 6. TheBusCameBack towards the end of the same season, and again in season 7.
** Clare left for Paris with her father in the season 7 finale.
** [[spoiler: Dylan left L.A. after his wife's death 10 episodes into season 6]]. However, TheBusCameBack (for good).
** Carly moved back to Montana to take care of her sick dad halfway through season 8.
** [[spoiler: Brandon moved to Washington D.C. to accept a job early in season 9]] followed by [[spoiler: Valerie leaving L.A., moving in with her mom in Buffalo only two episodes later]] in [[spoiler: the same episode that Dylan came back]]. Both returned for the series finale.
** Gina, Donna's cousin and [[spoiler: half-sister]], left town after [[spoiler: their father's]] funeral in season 10, having made amends with Donna.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Principal Yvonne Teasley.
* RecklessGunUsage: A VerySpecialEpisode uses this [[spoiler: [[DroppedABridgeOnHim to kill off one of the regulars]]]], in front of David.
* RememberTheNewGuy: Valerie Malone, who arrived on the show following Brenda's exit, was introduced as a lifelong friend of the Walshes. Her existence had never been acknowledged prior. Plus, Gina Kincaid being introduced as Donna's cousin, despite a total lack of mention beforehand. Also principal Harry Wilson was introduced as Kelly Taylor's never-before-seen-or-mentioned neighbor and life-long friend. See, photoshopped picture, so it must be true.
* ReplacedTheThemeTune: "The Green Room," the first episode aired after the pilot, features a different theme tune. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrfk1hkDZN0 Check it out here.]] (By the way, the "Kelli Brook" listed in the end credits isn't ''that'' one.)
* RevolvingDoorCasting: Relatively limited in the earlier years, but by the end the show had gone through many, many cast changes.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tropes (S-Z)]]
* SchoolGradeHacking: In "Destiny Rides Again", Steve gets bad news regarding his low SAT score. He decides to take the risk and get Herbert to help him hack into the school computer to change his grades. Eventually he gets caught and would have gotten expelled if his mother didn't pull a ScrewTheRulesImFamous.
* SecondEpisodeIntroduction: A jarring example; Dylan, the show's BreakoutCharacter, doesn't appear in the pilot.
* SecondLove: Kelly to Dylan after Brenda. Toni is the Third Love.
* SecondYearProtagonist: Most of the students spent two years in their junior year before moving onto senior year in the show's third season. This was done to sustain the show's longevity as the series became popular. However, the trope is averted with David Silver, who begins as a freshman, and unlike the rest of the gang, ages normally but graduates a year earlier than expected in season 3, with the HandWave being that he took more classes to catch up.
* SelfHarm: In one episode, Donna finds her assistant cutting herself, after suspecting it. She tries to help her, eventually persuading her to get therapy.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Brandon (sensitive) and Steve (manly); Brandon (sensitive) and Dylan (manly).
* SlutShaming: All of the girls do this to each other at varying intervals:
** Brenda taunts Kelly about her previous reputation as the school bimbo after running into Kelly on a date with her ex-boyfriend Dylan. Throughout the series, it was well established that this was a sore point for Kelly.
** Brenda herself gets this when she's wrongly accused of using the CastingCouch to secure the lead in the school play.
** They, along with Andrea and Donna, apply this to newcomer Emily Valentine, upon noticing her flirting with all of the guys in the group. Especially bad as that's ALL she's doing--despite her unconventional looks and "Bad Girl" attitude, Emily is just as virginal as the latter two.
*** Emily herself accuses Brandon of treating her like a tramp after he breaks up with her even though he's actually done nothing of the sort--although he's (rightfully) complained about her crazy behavior, he's said nothing to indicate that she's promiscuous.
** Valerie gets this after coming to town--from ''[[{{Hypocrite}} Kelly]]''.
* SpecialGuest: Various musical performers, including Babyface, Christina Aguilera, The Cardigans, Donna Lewis, Cathy Dennis...virtually anyone who was popular during the decade.
* StalkingIsLove: Emily refuses to let go when Brandon breaks up with her after she spikes his drink with Ectasy. She is portrayed as genuinely troubled and eventually sent away to get help. When she resurfaces a few years later, Brandon talks about her like she's the love of his life, despite their very brief fling.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Gina for Valerie, down to their bitchy qualities and their rivalry with Kelly (basically Gina was Valerie on ice skates). Arguably, Noah for Dylan, because of their collective issues with their wealthy fathers, alcohol issues, and their "bad boy" attitudes; however, unlike most examples of the trope, both were on the show at the same time (the last two seasons).
* StockFootage: The show often reuses the same establishing shots of various places such as the Peach Pit, California University, and Beverly Hills in general. Some of the stock footage, which originates from the first season, was used well into the show's later seasons, including several shots from the season 1 opening sequence (such as the panning down shot of The Rodeo Collection on Rodeo Drive).
* TeacherStudentRomance: Brandon has one with the married anthropology professor Lucinda Nicholson in season 4.
* TeenDrama: TropeCodifier. It borrowed heavily from ''Series/DegrassiJuniorHigh'' but on a network budget, stripped out the more overtly educational elements and maxed the "shiny" end of the SlidingScaleOfShinyVersusGritty.
* TeenGenius: Clare Arnold entered California University as a college sophomore, despite having graduated from high school only a couple of months earlier.
* TeenPregnancy:
** DownplayedTrope, with Andrea. Andrea became pregnant during her freshman year of college, in season 4 (making her roughly 18 or 19 at the time), and gave birth to a daughter at the end of the season. [[WillingSuspensionOfDisbelief Just forget that Andrea's actress, Gabrielle Carteris, was around 32/33 at the time.]]
** In season 1, Brandon went on a date with a scholarly girl, who turned out to be a teen mom.
** Jessica Alba, then 16, portrayed a girl who left her newborn baby outside of a clinic in two episodes (season 8).
* TakeAThirdOption: Kelly is in love with, and pursed by, two guys: Brandon and Dylan. Simultaneously, Brandon proposes marriage to her and Dylan asks her to go travel around the world, and she must choose between those two paths. After deliberating an entire episode about which man to chose, she gives ''both'' the wedding ring and the plane tickets back to both men, declares she doesn't want a relationship with either of them, and says "I choose '''me'''".
* TheirFirstTime: Dylan and Brenda, on prom night. Others had their first time during the course of the series too (most notably, the long-awaited time David and Donna finally had sex), but theirs was particularly highlighted.
* ThemeTwinNaming: Brandon and Brenda
* TimeToMove:
** The first season finale of the original ''Series/BeverlyHills90210'' featured Jim Walsh getting a promotion back to Minnesota, and was met with resistance from Brenda, Brandon, and surprisingly, Cindy, all of whom grew accustomed to life in Beverly Hills. It went as far as a going-away party thrown by Brenda and Brandon's friends before Jim changed his mind, thus allowing the family to stay in Cali.
** Subverted in season 5, when Jim and Cindy Walsh did leave for Hong Kong, thus becoming TheMovingExperience...on a different continent. They intended to sell the house, which led to their son Brandon (daughter Brenda having left for London a year earlier) deciding to have a destructive rave at the home, as the new potential owners were intending to destroy the house after the sale was made. However, the real estate agent came during the rave, and informed Brandon that the house fell out of escrow, thus the Walshes were still the owners of the house. This led to Brandon and his friends having to clean up the mess after the rave ended. Brandon and numerous of his friends (Steve, Valerie, David, etc.) lived in the house through the remainder of the show, even after Brandon himself [[PutOnABus left for Washington D.C. in early season 9]], which meant that none of the owners ''or'' related family members lived in the house in the final two seasons.
* TonightSomeoneDies: [[spoiler: Scott Scanlon]]
* TrashTheSet: The rave at the Walsh's house in the season 6 premiere, which then has to be undone when the house falls out of escrow (see TimeToMove)
* TraumaCongaLine:
** Kelly for all the reasons listed in the DamselInDistress on this page.
** Dylan also goes through multiple drug addictions and alcoholism, his parents leaving him, his father blowing up in a car bombing in front of him [[spoiler: (which was faked, but he didn't know that for seven years)]], the loss of his fortune and half-sister to con artists, him developing depression, him nearly dying in a car wreck, and [[spoiler: his wife getting killed in a shooting that was originally meant for him]].
* TroubledAbuser: Ray, who had an abusive DisappearedDad and [[AlcoholicParent alcoholic single mom]], abuses his girlfriend Donna in season 5 and 6.
* TroubledButCute: Dylan definitely fits this.
* TwoTimingWithTheBestie: While Brenda was spending a summer in France, her boyfriend Dylan and her best friend Kelly started falling for each other. Later, when Kelly and Dylan were a couple, Kelly started falling for his best friend, Brandon.
* UnrequitedLoveSwitcheroo: The show briefly attempts this when Brandon gets jealous of Andrea's new boyfriend and kisses her. Instead of reciprocating, she angrily rebuffs him--"Don't insult me like that. Not now. You had your choice and you made it.", referring to him rebuffing ''her'' interest nearly a year before, pointing out that he's only doing this out of jealousy rather than having genuine feelings for her.
* VerySpecialEpisode: Occasionally, running the gambut from drugs to racism to sexism to homophobia, there were no topical subjects that the show wouldn't touch (except maybe [[BestialityIsDepraved bestiality]]).
* WhatTheHellHero: Almost every major character has been at the receiving end of this. For example, the season 4 episode "Blind Spot", after he discovered that his fraternity's leader was gay and he accidentally outed him to the other fraternity members, has Steve being chewed out by the man for his homophobia and his decision to [[ForcedOutOfTheCloset out him]].
** Kelly and Dylan face this by Brenda when they reveal that they cheated with each other while Brenda was in Paris during the summer.
** Andrea calls David out for his apolitical stance when an accused anti-Semitic speaker is allowed to speak at the California University campus. This eventually leads to David coming to terms with his Jewish identity and going along with Andrea.
** Brandon is called out by Robinson Ashe III in a season 2 episode because the latter thinks that Brandon's only befriending him to get a story out of him (in the aftermath of his sister's boyfriend getting arrested for walking at night in Beverly Hills) and implicitly accused him of racism because of it. Brandon gets fed up with the accusation, leading to Brenda to tell her brother that he wouldn't be so upset if he felt that Robinson didn't have a point.
* WickedStepmother: Averted, when David believes that he will be kicked out of the house by Jackie when she separates from David's dad Mel. However, Jackie allowed David to stay with her, and never treated him wrong, often close to him as her own son.
* WidowedAtTheWedding: Technically subverted because it didn't happen at the actual wedding, though [[spoiler: Toni]] died the same day as [[spoiler: her]] wedding to [[spoiler: Dylan]].
[[/folder]]
----
!!The 2008 reboot series contains examples of:
* ActorAllusion:
** [[Series/SouthOfNowhere Maeve Quinlan]] as the mother of a girl who dates another girl.
** In one episode Dixon is given a fake ID with a Spanish name on it. Tristan Wilds is Hispanic.
** Liam has a scene where he dresses as a [[Film/VampiresSuck vampire]].
** This wouldn't be the last time Jim [[Series/{{Arrow}} would return from being lost at sea]].
* AlcoholicParent: Kelly and Silver's mom ''again''. She got worse, [[spoiler: she died]].
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Naomi certainly does want Liam. Annie seems to either genuinely not like him, or denying/hiding the fact. Regardless, she'll fall soon with the way things are going.
* AllWomenLoveShoes: Naomi claims to have more shoes than Imelda Marcos and Kimora ''combined''.
* AmbiguouslyJewish: Silver is half-Jewish through her father's side, which traditionally would be the wrong side to make ''her'' Jewish but she did sit shiva for her mother (though this could be a case of the writers forgetting Jackie was never Jewish in the original series.)
* AcquiredSituationalNarcissism: Adrianna big time. Fame rapidly turns her into an [[IdiotBall airheaded]] RichBitch.
* AlphaBitch: Naomi isn't all bad, and unlike a lot of Libbies she does have a genuinely nicer side, but she can still be an absolute bitch much of the time (and her sister is far worse.)
* ArbitrarilyLargeBankAccount: Naomi's trust fund seems to never run short despite her excessive spending.
* BettyAndVeronica: The show has certain examples of this -
** Annie (Betty) and Naomi (Veronica), with Ethan (Archie).
** Ivy (Betty) and Naomi (Veronica), with Liam (Archie).
** Rhonda (Veronica) and Annie (Betty), with Ethan (Archie again).
** {{Gender Flip}}ped with Navid (Betty) and Teddy(Veronica), with Adrianna (Archie).
** Then Teddy (Veronica) and Dixon (Betty), with Silver (Archie).
** Max (Betty) and Austin (Veronica) for Naomi
* BigFancyHouse: Naomi's mansion that she bought in season 4. It would later become the home for all the show's main female characters.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Jen seemed like a nice, caring older sister to Naomi in her first appearance. Right until we learn that she slept with Ethan while he and Naomi were together (she would later go on to sleep with Liam while he was dating Naomi and blame Annie for it).
** Annie and Dixon's cousin Emily seemed like a sweet, innocent girl who looked up to Annie at first. Then she turned all of Annie's friends against her, tried to steal Liam away from her, got Annie fired from her internship, and suspended from school... all while pulling the WoundedGazelleGambit.
* BookDumb: Naomi is of more or less average intelligence but it's frequently mentioned that's she's a poor student. She's also the only one unable to figure out that Annie wrote Undressed after reading it.
* BoundAndGagged: Naomi and Silver in ''Liars'', though only Naomi is gagged.
** Liam at the end of ''The Things We Do For Love'' and most of the next episode ''Misery Loves Company'', much to the [[{{Fanservice}} squee]] of fangirls.
* TheBusCameBack: Season 5 seems to be doing this for everyone. So far Debbie, Tracy, Ty, Jasper, Emily, and an even Annie's ex boyfriend Jason have made reappearances and that's not counting anyone who comes BackForTheFinale (which turned out to be no one)
* CallingTheOldManOut: When Navid's father blames him for revealing information that led to the police investigating him for [[spoiler: child pornography]], Navid told his father that it happened because he (the father) broke the law.
* ChekhovsGunman: After Oscar completes his revenge on Laurel, he stays around to help Naomi against Mr. Cannon.
* ChickMagnet: Liam and Ethan.
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Many characters, most notably Kelly Taylor and her son, Oscar
** Ivy in Season 5. She didn't get a sendoff like Austin or reference to leaving like everyone else. She's just gone and no one seems to remember her. She didn't even get mentioned until late in the season.
* ClosetKey: Gia for Adrianna, who didn't realize she was bisexual until she fell for Gia.
* ComingOutStory: [[spoiler: Teddy gets one, spaced over several episodes.]]
** Also, Adrianna with her girlfriend Gia.
* CompetenceZone: As of season four Navid and Silver play surrogate parents to Navid's sister Leila - who is all of a ''year'' younger than them but who acts and is treated like a 14 year old.
* ContinuityNod: The fact that the creators remembered Silver from the original series gives it some merit.
* DateRapeAverted - Mark on Annie; Jasper ends up saving her.
* DatingDoSiDo
* DawsonCasting: Teddy Montgomery is 17 or 18. His actor, Trevor Donovan, is 31.
** There's an InUniverse example with an undercover cop pretending to be a student who dates Ryan.
** Suspension of Disbelief becomes incredibly hard in the later seasons, when characters who are supposed to be in their late teens/early twenties are sporting thinning hair, receding hairlines, and visible crow's feet around their eyes.
* DeadpanSnarker: Silver.
* DisappearedDad: The show ''loves'' this trope- Ivy, Naomi (and thus also Jen), Liam, Adrianna, Silver, Sammy (Kelly's son) and most recently Navid, Annie and Dixon all have absent fathers. In fact ''none'' of the teenage cast have fathers much involved in their lives by late Season 3.
** In Season 4, Navid has a MissingMom as well.
* EnemyMine: It's hinted Annie and Vanessa are going to have to work together to save Liam from a LoonyFan.
* EstrangedSoapFamily: Big time, even excluding those relatives who departed on bad terms. Notable examples include Naomi's mother Tracy who has not appeared since 2009 despite her daughter being raped, scammed out of her money by a cult, expelled from high school and nearly getting married.
** Harry didn't show when Dixon [[spoiler: almost died]]. And both parents were absent during his struggles with drugs.
* {{Expy}}:
** At least initially the Wilsons where clearly intended to invoke the Walshes from the original series (Annie especially was very obviously the new Brenda) though it's lessened with time.
** Dixon shares a few similarities with Clay Carlin from ''Series/SouthOfNowhere''. He may be an example of what Clay would be like if he hadn't met Sean.
** Campbell is pretty much [[Series/{{Glee}} Sebastian Smythe]], except straight. They're even played by the same actor.
* FalseRapeAccusation: Naomi falsely claimed that Mr. Cannon was sexually harassing her towards the end of season 2 (when in actuality, Cannon believed that Naomi was coming onto him when she said she "would do anything" to bump up a test grade). Eventually Naomi recanted her statements, but unfortunately [[spoiler: this rape accusation became a real one]].
* FourGirlEnsemble: Annie is the sweet naive girl, Silver is the DeadpanSnarker, Adrianna is the one obsessed with glamor and fame, and Naomi serves as the cool big sister figure for the group.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble:
** Adrianna (sanguine), Naomi (choleric), Silver (melancholic), and Annie (phlegmatic).
** Liam (choleric), Dixon (melancholic), and Navid (phlegmatic).
* TheGenericGuy: Ethan had shades of this. There's a reason that no one misses him.
* GirlNextDoor: Annie.
* GiveGeeksAChance: Subverted. Nerdy Matt rejects AlphaBitch Naomi because he considers her a shallow idiot. Also, Matt is shown to have a healthy romantic life before Naomi even enters the picture.
* GoodGirlsAvoidAbortion: Double subverted; Adrianna tried to get one, only to learn that the baby was too far long to have the abortion, so she decided to give the child up for adoption at birth.
* GranolaGirl: Silver and Ivy both have aspects.
* GratuitousJapanese: Donna. The Japanese people within the show appear to understand her; native Japanese speakers watching, not so much.
* HappilyAdopted: Dixon (mostly).
* HeelRealization: Navid has one after he [[spoiler: leaks a sextape of Liam and his professor onto the internet]].
* HotTeacher: Matthews. Arguably Harry too.
* HugeSchoolgirl: Silver - Jessica Stroup is 5'8, which isn't so noticeable next to the only slightly shorter (and usually high heel clad) [=AnnaLynne=] [=McCord=]. But when standing next to the petite and waifish Shenae Grimes can look unintentionally hilarious.
* InsidiousRumorMill: Emily attempts this against her cousin Annie by telling all of Annie's friends that Annie is trashing them behind their backs. However, Annie calls Emily out on her lies and Annie's friends side with her against Emily.
* InterclassFriendship: Annie, coming from middle-class background, is best friends with the extremely wealthy Naomi.
* ItsAWonderfulPlot: The fifth season episode "We're Not In Kansas Anymore" has Annie dreaming of her life if her family had never moved to Beverly Hills. She's doing summer stock theater, her parents stil divorced but Dixon living in L.A as a rap star estranged from the family. Naomi never won back her trust fund and is a real estate agent dating a still closeted Teddy. Adrianna is a star better known for her party ways and Silver a celebrity blogger while Liam is delivering drugs for Dixon.
* JerkJock: Mark Driscoll.
* KarmaHoudini: Arguably Annie, whose punishment for a fatal hit and run (which she covered up for a whole ''year'') is a couple of months of (offscreen) house arrest.
* TheLadette: Ivy.
* LastNameBasis: Erin Silver prefers to go by 'Silver'.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: Almost the exact phrase Adrianna uses to describe her devolping friendship with Liam in Season 4.
* LovableAlphaBitch: Naomi evolves into this after her CharacterDevelopment in season 3.
* LoveDodecahedron
* LoveMakesYouEvil: Jasper has been a good example of this.
* LoveTriangle: Annie/Ethan/Naomi (first season), Naomi/Liam/Ivy (second season).
** Also Annie/Ethan/Rhonda (so-so), Ethan/Silver/Dixon, Teddy/Adrianna/Navid, Teddy/Silver/Dixon, Adrianna/Navid/Lyla, Debbie/Harry/Kelly, etc.
* MamaBear: Debbie can embrace this from time to time, especially when it came to Dixon and Sasha.
* {{Manipulative B|astard}}itch: Jen.
* MySecretPregnancy: Jen kept the fact hat she was pregnant from Ryan. And when he did find out, she still didn't want him in the baby's life.
* NerdsAreSexy: Naomi thinks this of Max.
* NiceGuy: Dixon.
* NoGoingSteady: With Annie probably being the worst offender.
** Although Naomi looks like she might be a close second.
* OddFriendship: [[AlphaBitch Naomi]] and [[TheSnarkKnight Silver]]. Later Naomi and Ivy.
* OperationJealousy: Ivy and Dixon form a fake relationship to show others (mostly Naomi) that they're over Liam and Silver respectively (in reality Ivy is still pining for Liam and [[ObliviousToLove oblivious to Dixon's growing feelings for her]]).
* OutOfFocus: Navid was nominally a main character from the first episode on but he had very little to do early in Season 1 before eventually being linked with Adrianna (who oddly was not an official main character at first but had a lot of early focus). In Season 2 and 3 Matthews is frequently out of focus and gone by Season 4 considering everyone has graduated.
* PregnancyScare: The season 3 finale ends with [[spoiler: Naomi]] coming to [[spoiler: Max's]] house to reveal her pregnancy. However, in the following season, it was revealed that [[spoiler: Naomi]] was never pregnant at all.
* PreppyName: Teddy Montgomery
** Also InUniverse: Jen wants to name their son Jacques but Ryan prefers the more traditional Jack.
* PromotionToOpeningTitles: Adrianna, Liam, and most recently, Ivy and Teddy.
* PutOnABus: Ethan. Which was totally random, though he was being replaced by Liam and no one really missed him.
** Harry as of Season 3.
** Ryan and Debbie in Season 4
** Ivy as of season 5
* RichBitch: Naomi, until her CharacterDevelopment, her sister, Jen is even worse. Adrianna develops into one during Season 3 after her new found fame goes to her head.
* TheRunaway: Dixon, escaping behind his parents backs despite that Debbie grounded him, and going to Australia with Ivy.
* SeriesContinuityError: Silver's age. She was born at the start of the original show's third season (1992) yet graduated with the class of 2011. With summer birthdays, students usually graduate before their 18th birthdays, though Silver would've had hers before the beginning of season 3 (her senior year), instead of season 4 (college freshman year).
* SettledForGay: In an episode when [[ItsAWonderfulPlot Annie had a dream if she hadn't moved to Beverly Hills]], Naomi went broke due to her sister took all of her inheritance, so a still-closeted Teddy made a deal to her by marrying him as his [[TheBeard beard]], while he would also pay for all of her expenses.
* ShipTease: Season 4 has teased Adrianna with both Dixon and Liam.
* SpotlightStealingSquad: Focus of the show shifted from the Wilson family to Naomi somewhere between seasons 2 and 3.
** Season 4 seems to split time between Annie and Naomi equally.
** Liam was a minor version. The main guy was supposed to be Ethan but Liam proved more popular and Ethan was dropped.
* SiblingTriangle: Annie was torn between Liam and his half brother Charlie in Season 3.
* StalkerWithACrush: Jasper. Surprising?
* StraightGay: [[spoiler: Teddy]], also Marco.
** [[spoiler: Alec]] who is in love with Max.
** Gia herself. It was true that there was little development up to the point where we find out but apparently all of the characters seemed to know.
* {{Surfer Dude}}tte: Ivy.
* TakingTheHeat: Austin took the blame for arson to protect Annie. Neither of them actually did it but the fire was started by Annie's friend Bree who was destroying evidence both she and Annie had been prostitutes; had Annie fingered Bree she would also have to reveal her own brush with prostitution and would have faced being kicked out of college at a minimum. Austin decided that Annie had more to live for so 'confessed' to get her off the hook.
* TeenPregnancy: [[spoiler: Adrianna.]]
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Ivy and Naomi, initially as rivals and later as an OddFriendship.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Adrianna in season 3. She even went as far as [[spoiler: swapping out Silver's medication for Bipolar Disorder with placebos]].
* TroubledButCute: Liam.
* TwoTeacherSchool: Sure there are a decent number of teachers but apparently Ryan Matthews teaches Sophomore, Junior, and Senior English.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: Liam the most, but Dixon is also shirtless quite often.
* WhamEpisode: 'Confessions'.
** 'The Heart Will Go On' as well
** 'Here Comes Honey Bye Bye' with [[spoiler: Riley's]] sudden death, [[spoiler: Max and Naomi's]] breakup and the reveal that [[spoiler: Teddy]] wants to use a surrogate.
* WoundedGazelleGambit: Done with Annie's cousin Emily. Emily tells Annie's friends that she said a bunch of mean things about them (which wasn't true). When Annie calls her on this, Emily pretends to cry in front Annie's friends (who of course, side with Emily). Emily also trashes her own dressing room at the internship Annie works at and makes it look like Annie did it. The result? Emily is believed to be the victim and Annie is fired.
%%* {{Yandere}}: Jasper, Vanessa
%%** Though Vanessa has nothing on [[spoiler: Ashley]]. She uses her position as [[spoiler: Liam's bodyguard]] to kidnap him and installs cameras around his bar to watch him all hours of the day.
%%* YourDoorWasOpen
