* In ''Manga/AllRounderMeguru'' is pointed out that martial arts need a proper physical conditioning in both strength and stamina to be properly implemented, even ones where strength is considered secondary like Judo. A plot point is that Momoka in the past never won a tournament in spite of being a genius at Judo and Ju-Jitsu because, having neglected conditioning, she just tired down in the semi-finals or finals, as it happens in the one shown on-page.
* Chirico from ''Anime/ArmoredTrooperVOTOMS'' has a powerful HealingFactor but still feels pain the way a normal person would. As the result he has serious psychological problems due to suffering through the agony of countless things that should have killed him, like being cut into pieces or burned alive with high octane fuel.
* In ''Manga/AssassinationClassroom'', Koro-sensei's ability to fly at Mach 20 requires a few other traits to work properly, such as hardening and streamlining of his body so that he can withstand the whiplash and G forces. Also, he has to use his tentacles to screen Nagisa and Karma when they travel with him so they don't get pelted by high speed dust.
* ''Manga/AttackOnTitan'':
** Supplementary Materials note that using 3DMG requires ''very'' high amounts of coordination and balance (borderline-acrobatic levels) to use, much less pull off fancy maneuvers that Survey Corps veterans are seen using, as well as high leg strength, good aiming skills while mid-flight to actually land grappling hooks, and NervesOfSteel to keep it all together and not lose balance when disaster strikes (it's even stated that instructors will cut the cables on recruits to test their mettle). Also, one would presumably need to not be afraid of heights and be motion-sickness resistant.
** Titans are noted to have an extremely high body temperature, with the Colossal Titan in particular having heat generation as a defensive and offensive ability. The humans that "pilot" one of the intelligent Titans are only slightly warmer than normal when exiting, indicating that they are able to regulate their body temperature to avoid being cooked alive.
** Speaking of Titans, despite their sheer size still granting them massive physical advantages over humans, they are actually pseudo-mythical and do not conform to the normal laws of physics, being abnormally light and [[MadeOfPlasticine fragile]] for their size. As a result, a Titan with SuperStrength such as Eren's does ''not'' have the required durability to support its own strength and will break its bones with every punch unless reinforced with armor. However, Titans ''do'' have a HealingFactor to help mitigate this.
* As the wielder of the five-leaf grimoire and its associated anti-magic weapons, Asta from ''Manga/BlackClover'' requires a few things to use them. They're both exceptionally heavy and the cancellation property of it means it rapidly drains the mana of even the person who holds it. This is apparent when the Wizard King attempts to inspect the sword and realizes both that he can't really lift it and that even if he did, it would drain all of his powers. Thus, Asta's lack of magic functions as this because he's the only one who can actually use the swords in combat.
* ''Manga/{{Bleach}}'':
** Ichigo's speed increase from his Bankai lacks one notable secondary power: namely the ability to withstand his own speed. His first use of Bankai almost causes his own bones to break towards the end of the fight. He has to toughen up before he can get over that particular limitation.
** Word of God also states that the reason Ichigo and Renji can throw around their huge swords with no effort is because the swords don't weigh anything to them as they are a part of their soul, but they sure as hell weigh a lot to the person on the receiving end.
** There's also the scene where Mayuri Kurotsuchi inflicts a drug on Szayelaporro that increases his perception of time, resulting in the world appearing to slow around him, without actually granting him super reflexes so his body can keep up (Mayuri mentions that he usually dilutes this particular drug). As a result, poor Szayelaporro can do nothing to stop Mayuri from stabbing him in the heart, despite seeing it coming for what to him seems like centuries. [[AndIMustScream By the end, Szayelaporro is begging for death.]]
** Required Secondary Powers also proved key to defeating an Espada, [[spoiler:Barragan]], whose power was that his touch could rot and decay anything. His opponent, [[spoiler:Hachigen]], worked out that he had to have a secondary power to keep the rotting touch away from his own body. [[spoiler:Hachi]] exploited that fact by [[spoiler:[[TeleFrag warping his own decaying arm]]]] inside the Espada's body, causing [[spoiler:Barragan to rot away]] from the inside out.
** Aizen exploited something similar to defeat Yamamoto, who while resistant to is ''not'' immune to his Zanpakuto's own [[PlayingWithFire flames]]. When Aizen's PowerNullifier [[spoiler:in the form of the Espada-level Wonderweiss]] is destroyed, it ''explodes'' with the force of all of Yamamoto's sealed flames in an eruption that grievously injures the Head Captain, [[JumpingOnAGrenade who jumped on top of it to contain the attack]] as it otherwise would have certainly killed ''everyone else on the battefield''.
** When training to use his Fullbring, Ichigo needs to undergo intense endurance and strength training, as his time spent as a Shinigami did nothing for his physical strength which his Fullbring needs.
** Captains and Lieutenants also are given power limiters when in the human world and compress their swords to more manageable sizes. When Aizen (after [[spoiler:achieving near-PhysicalGod level of power]]) approaches [[YourHeadAsplode a human without one]] and Grand Fisher fights [[spoiler:Issin Kurosaki]], we find out why.
** [[spoiler:Kenpachi Zaraki's]] Bankai drastically increases his strength and ferocity, but he eventually destroys his arm from the force of his sword swing because his body has not had a chance to adapt to his new ability.
* ''Manga/BrynhildrInTheDarkness'': Kotori's teleportation resets the kinetic energy of the target, which is how she can rescue someone from a multi-story drop without them splattering on contact with the ground.
* ''Manga/CannonGodExaxxion'' goes into some considerable detail about what a 500+ ft. HumongousMecha would need to be able to move around. The mechs use ImportedAlienPhlebotinum gravity/inertial control devices to prevent them from collapsing under their own weight and allow their limbs to move at a reasonable speed, instead of feet they have invisible forcefields to distribute their weight to prevent them from crashing through the ground, because having actual feet big enough to accomplish this herculean task would look insanely silly (the fields are described as "invisible snowshoes" at one point), although at least that way bystanders would see them coming rather than being crushed underfoot by a robot that appears to be safely dozens of feet away. Aside from this, they're otherwise portrayed realistically and thus cause massive property damage to anything they get anywhere near simply by walking around.
* ''Literature/ACertainMagicalIndex''[=/=]''Manga/ACertainScientificRailgun'':
** Accelerator has a rather interesting required secondary power: [[GoodWithNumbers mathematics]] and spatial relations. Yes, without them he could probably deflect anything anyone sent at him but he couldn't really aim. [[AttackReflector Vector control]] requires him to be able to figure out what to actually do to get the result he wants. [[spoiler:Post HeelFaceTurn he's [[GoodIsDumb notably weaker]] because of some brain damage.]] In fact, it's mentioned that most powers, if not all, are based on this, revealing the reason why the ability users have to study extensively to be able to get more powerful.
** Mikoto has the power to [[ShockAndAwe manipulate electricity]], which implicitly requires the ability to sense electricity. Notably, [[spoiler:her clones]] have a weaker version of her power which does not grant the same ability to sense electricity, leading them to supplement with goggles that can see more of the electromagnetic spectrum.
** Touma's [[AntiMagic Imagine Breaker]] is stored in his right hand. It turns out that he has a limited [[SpiderSense ability to sense supernatural power]] so that he can actually get his hand up in time; otherwise there would be no way he could block Mikoto's electricity unless she was deliberately aiming for his hand. He also has the power to ''regrow'' his entire arm if it is cut off. Since that's the most obvious way of rendering him a non-threat, it comes up more often than you might think. [[spoiler:The arm is actually [[SealedInsideAPersonShapedCan sealing a much more dangerous power]], so it seems that ''someone'' doesn't want him separated from Imagine Breaker for too long]].
** Some of the others are brought up in ''Railgun''. Range and accuracy are the limiting factors of Kuroko's teleporter abilities ([[TeleFrag any objects intersecting with things she had teleported are explicitly stated to be displaced]]). [[ShockAndAwe Mikoto]] uses the heat generated from her electrical abilities on two separate occasions, once to cook an opponent using a non-conductive barrier and another time on a smaller scale to cook rice in a metal canteen when the stove isn't working. In the anime Uiharu mentions a specific lack of required extras. She has the power to prevent things from changing temperature but her hands can only tolerate a normal range of temperatures limiting the potential for its use (though she's great at keeping take-away warm) [[spoiler:and there's nothing stopping her from maintaining the temperature of ''another'' object at the opposite end of the spectrum to mitigate the effect]]. Touma also has some going for him otherwise attacks like Mikoto's railgun would still be lethal as momentum keeps the projectile going even after her power has been negated.
** Shizuri Mugino, the Meltdowner, can fire laser beams and create energy constructs like shields, but is not immune to them, leading to [[spoiler: Shiage Hamazura tricking her into blowing herself up.]] Notably, she seems to be the only [[PowerLevels Level 5]] without any of the RequiredSecondaryPowers necessary to handle her own ability, as not only do her beams require her to take a few seconds to precisely aim lest she destroy her own body, (as seen when she blows off her own arm when fighting angry) she can't even use her power to its full potential because her mind subconsciously suppresses its full strength.
** Maria Kumokawa can increase the centrifugal force her movements generate, greatly enhancing her DanceBattler style. Since she does not have enhanced durability, she rarely goes over double the force, to minimize the chances of her breaking a bone or otherwise injuring herself.
* Many of the characters in ''Anime/{{Charlotte}}'' are afflicted by a lack of this, including the main characters.
** Takajou has what he calls "teleportation", which is really just super speed. He has the buffed awareness to supplement it, but not the reflexes or control to stop himself or make fine movements while using it. In fact, he outright says he had to undergo ''a lot'' of physical training to make his ability even remotely useful.
** Yuu can possess the bodies of others, but lacks the ability to control his own body or how long he's in the second person's. [[spoiler: Once it's revealed that this is actually a side effect of his real ability, it's slightly less important.]]
** Zigzagged with Shichino, who can pass through solid matter, and ''does'' have the secondary ability to control ''which'' matter, it seems. But he gets extremely fatigued after using it, which may be a lack of secondary powers, or may just be a lack of physical conditioning (the only time we see him use it is when [[spoiler: he's in a prison so they can observe his ability]], so he may just not have built up the physical endurance some other characters have).
* ''Manga/{{Claymore}}'':
** When [[spoiler:Clare awakens]] while fighting Rigaldo, she cannot control her speed and winds up running into more than a couple buildings.
** Claymores who are known by the Organization to have shape-altering abilities are issued special uniforms that can stretch to accommodate the changes.
* In ''Anime/CodeGeass'', Rolo the {{Tykebomb}} is a subversion because he doesn't stop time, he puts your brain ([[spoiler:and his own heart]]) on pause so you ''think'' he stopped time. He never uses it for longer than a few seconds. When he spams this power later in the series, [[spoiler: [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome he ends up suffering from cardiac arrest and dying]]]].
* The title character of ''Manga/Cyborg009'' and the rest of his fellow 00 cyborgs are specifically enhanced to be able to withstand the acceleration of using or being carried through 009's [[SuperSpeed Acceleration Mode]]. It's explicitly mentioned that if 009 takes normal humans into Acceleration Mode, he could easily end up killing them.
* One of the Contractors in ''Anime/DarkerThanBlack'' can teleport with "passengers", but cannot transport non-living matter (see ShamelessFanserviceGirl entry).
** Another contractor had bursts of super-speed, complete with friction resistance and clothes-extension. Unfortunately the friction-resistance only worked on air: Cue [[InertiaIsACruelMistress nastiness from Newton's Third Law]] as he ran into some raindrops at a speed faster than a speeding bullet. Not to mention when he uses his powers, [[TooFastToStop he can't change direction all that easily]], and often risks crashing into objects.
** There's also an episode where Hei faces down another Contractor with [[ShockAndAwe powers like his]]. When they grab each other, they form a complete circuit, knocking each other back but not producing a lethal shock. This is far from the only fun the show has with his powers- most of the issues listed above are addressed simply by requiring something to conduct electricity. Plus, that's the only way he can control the path at all; shocking someone through a puddle of water on the road also blew out a nearby streetlight, for example. [[spoiler:The finale addresses the manipulate electrons = manipulate matter issue, too. Turns out that [[EldritchLocation in the right place]], BK-201 is an outright RealityWarper]].
* ''Franchise/{{Digimon}}'':
** The various physical laws that the series breaks (size-shifting, thermodynamics, etc.) can be explained by the fact that their world is a big computer program. How they do it in the ''real'' world, however...
** The franchise dances in and out of addressing some of this by having the Digimon, particularly in the Adventure continuity but also seen in Tamers, exhibit high amounts of hunger and sometimes the inability to transform or fight when hungry. Thereby implying that they burn vast amounts of energy to perform. Additionally, getting hit with large attacks reverts them to their base level and leaves them groggy and exhausted until they can recoup their energy.
* ''Anime/DragonBallZ'':
** The weakest member of the Ginyu Force has the power to [[TimeStandsStill stop time]]. However, he can only do so for as long as he can hold his breath and maintain the proper concentration. Considering how out of shape he is, this isn't long.
** FridgeLogic dictates this is why Oozaru form increases a Saiyan's strength and ki ten-fold. Growing to giant proportions allows them to access additional strength and ki, which would be needed to prevent their body collapsing under its own weight.
** Many characters of ''Franchise/DragonBall'' have super anchoring abilities as addition to their strength, otherwise they will blow themselves backwards when they use an energy attack.
** This is especially noticeable with Tao Pai Pai, in his CurbStompBattle with Bora in the original ''Manga/DragonBall''. He holds onto Bora's spear, who is unable to even move it one bit, not even upwards even though he should by all means be able to lift Tao Pai Pai upwards as well. Fridge Brilliance comes into play here, these characters fly by pushing ki in the proper directions. So presumably they could do something similar to hold themselves in place.
** During the Buu Saga of ''Anime/DragonBallZ'', Gohan teaches Videl ''ki'' control and flight. However, when the Z-Fighters fly off in search of Babidi's spaceship, Videl eventually has to bow out because she can't keep up, and can be seen shielding her eyes from the wind with her arms. This seems to imply that the energy aura put out by ''DBZ'' characters during high-speed flight takes care of all the minor concerns like wind, friction, etc.
** Training is needed for the characters to breathe in low oxygen environments, which is how they can fly so high without passing out. As a kid, Goku got dizzy and lost of breath when he first went to Korin's Tower and then Kami's Lookout.
** Fighters are apparently able to control the amount of destructive force a Ki attack causes when it hits something other than an enemy, otherwise by the end of the first third of the series they wouldn't be able to use Ki attacks at all as any Ki blast strong enough to hurt any opponent close to their own level that missed or was dodged would blow up the planet they are fighting on when it landed. Their Ki also acts as a type of shield that must be consciously activated or raised, otherwise even a weak energy blast could pierce their skin.
** Namekians have extremely sharp hearing, able to hear people talking from hundreds of feet away, even in a crowded stadium. Yet, they don't experience any discomfort from loud noises, unless you count whistling, showing that they can control the sensitivity of their hearing.
** Goku has a powerful sense of smell that is as sharp as a dog according to Goku, yet he isn't bothered by strong smells any more than a normal person outside of Bacterian, who had never bathe a day in his life and can cause even a normal person to nearly faint, showing that Goku can filter out what he's smelling. He also has sensitive hearing, although nowhere near as sharp as a Namekian, given that he can hear people whispering behind his back and through walls, but loud noises don't get to him.
** Almost all the characters in the series are {{Physical God}}s capable of destroying a planet with little effort, yet they can pick up an egg without breaking it and be hurt by far less powerful people. They have to train themselves to be gentle.
*** When Goku returns to Earth after being in space for over a year, he sent his wife flying with just a pat on the back.
*** This actually gets Deconstructed humorously in ''Anime/DragonBallSuper''. While Vegeta is able to control himself enough to handle most day-to-day activities and interaction, he can't crack an egg because even when using every ounce of his self control, eggs just shatter in his hand from the pressure. This is also toyed around with when it comes to [[PhysicalGod Lord]] [[PalsWithJesus Beerus]]. While he CAN show self control enough to interact with mortals, he doesn't always see it as important since he's a [[PersonOfMassDestruction God of Destruction]] anyway. Thus you get scenes of him tossing people around like fleas when he turns in his sleep and destroying nearby planets with a sneeze.
** All the characters also have good emotional control, yes even Vegeta. It has been shown several times throughout the series that strong emotions make people more powerful or lose control of their powers. When this happens, they can cause earthquakes, weather changes, or dimensions to shatter. An emotional slip like Vegeta going overboard on his temper could destroy the planet.
** The characters can also move beyond light speed, yet still stop on a dime. This requires some training since inexperienced fighters have been shown stumbling or running into walls when they try to stop.
** Being able to move and react at the super speeds that they do means that they also have to have an even more acute visual prowess that allows them to see other things moving just as fast. In more than one heated fight some of the lesser characters admit that things have gotten too fast for even them to keep up.
** It's openly stated that good knowledge of mundane martial arts helps and is a prerequisite in manipulating ki. Videl's ability to pick up use of ki and the flight technique in about a week once she got Gohan to teach her was openly attributed to her previous martial arts skills, while Spopovich being able to use ki and flight while being too unskilled for it immediately warned the Z-Fighters there was something wrong with him.
* The fact that one enemy's force field was ''not'' air-permeable was the key to her defeat in ''Manga/DragonHalf''. Mink breathed fire at her until all the air in the bubble ran out.
* ''Literature/{{Durarara}}'''s Shizuo acquired SuperStrength pretty early on in life, but not the physical resistance that usually goes with it. The end result was that he spent as much time tossing cars as he did in the hospital from the resulting fractures until around high school.
* ''Manga/FullmetalAlchemist'', being on the hard side of fantasy, acknowledges some of the RequiredSecondaryPowers needed by characters:
** Ed needs to get his [[ArtificialLimbs automail]] updated by Winry should he get taller. An engineer also notes that the strain from the artificial limbs can hamper physical development for children and teens.
** Like ''Ghost in the Shell'' below, automail isn't treated as super strong limbs, rather they are treated as super-''durable'' limbs, as many Ed's (and many military models) are made of steel and other strong alloys. In addition, standard automail limbs can kill people in cold regions as the limb will conduct heat away from the body and cause frostbite at the metal-tissue interface. At Briggs Ed needs to replace his limbs with an aluminum carbon fiber composite set to function normally.
** Alphonse, as a [[SoulJar soul inhabiting a suit of metal armor]], has the advantages of NighInvulnerability, but also the drawbacks. His great weight serves to anchor him, but also hinders him. He is unable to eat or sleep... but also has no need to. He cannot feel pain... [[BlessedWithSuck because he is completely numb]]. However, while an inability to feel without nerve endings makes sense, for some reason he can still see without eyeballs, hear without eardrums, speak without vocal cords, and even ''move'' without muscles or feeling and equilibrium required to coordinate movement.
*** It's eventually explained why he can still remember things without a brain: [[spoiler:his soul is still "connected" to his body and mind which is on the other side of the Gate (and still aging).]]
*** Al and the other [[AnimatedArmor animated armors]] can move without muscles because his soul is infused into the armor. During Ed's fight with Number 48, 48 shows Ed the blood seal on the inside of his helmet. After some fighting Ed knocks 48's head off and thinks he's won because the part of the armor the seal is on is no longer connected to the main body. However, it's revealed that he has ''another'' seal on the chest of his armor, but after Ed uses a variant of Scar's disintegration to destroy part of 48's armor, the severed torso with the seal is no longer able to move its legs or defend itself against Ed.
*** Similarly, when Barry the Chopper's armor is destroyed, the piece with the blood seal on it can still talk, hear, see, and move (he can't move a lot, but he can move), but the rest of the armor can't.
*** The speaking part is actually lampshaded a bit, in that Al's voice has not changed since the incident. In ''Anime/FullmetalAlchemistTheConquerorOfShamballa'', [[spoiler:Al has gotten his body back, and grown up to the age he was in the series, and as such his voice is deeper. Oddly, when he gets his soul temporarily shifted to an identical suit of armor on Earth, he sounds like a nine-year-old again]].
*** Likewise, the 2003 anime shows that when Lust scratches Al's blood seal, he seemed to be in pain.
*** In theory, it could be that the armour itself replaces his retinas and eardrums - he sees and hears the light and sound waves that interact with it. Presumably this would mean that he doesn't see (or interprets as being black) anything the colour of his armour, as that light is reflected rather than absorbed.
** Alchemy outwardly seems to change objects from one state to another, but the process is basically breaking things down and rebuilding them, not outright changing them as-is. This is why Scar can only destroy things with his "alchemy": He does not know how to rebuild things once he "breaks them down". [[spoiler:Until the end of the series, where months of studying his brother's notes allows him to apply the "rebuild" tattoo to his ''other'' arm - which comes in very handy during his climactic fight against King Bradley.]]
** The above reason is also why Alchemy is seen as a science more than magic in the universe; it's simply a reaction one can induce, but not knowing the components you need nor how to assemble them into the end form means you, at best, end up doing nothing and, at worse, end up with a horrifying pile of junk that may or may not be throbbing. This is why State Alchemists have specialties; they don't know formulas outside of their purview.
** The most evident example would be Sloth. Why? [[spoiler:He has SuperSpeed, despite his size... and he's still ''faster than Lust and '''Wrath''''', turning into an ultra-fast wrecking ball. Unfortunately, he has horrendous maneuverability and can't easily stop himself]].
* ''Manga/GetBackers'': Himiko Kudou's claim to fame is using various types of perfumes for combat.
** These range from a degenerative perfume that regresses the mental capacities of the victim, a flame perfume that sets the air on someone's lungs on fire, and so on. Her "ultimate" perfume makes her able to attain greatly increased speed (multiplicatively, by the number she smells her perfume) by exerting more force to her muscles and reactivity. However, she does not have the required powers of infinite muscle/bone durability, and so her entire body nearly breaks down when she uses it.
** She does have a required secondary power for everything else: since her very power depends on people breathing her poisonous perfumes, she had developed a method of breathing by sensing which air is safe enough to breathe (which basically entails a heightened sense of air pressure reading). As proof, her own sweat and body odor is a mild hypnotic psychoactive "perfume". The fact that she herself isn't affected by it is proof of her secondary powers (or at least demonstrated tolerance to her own poisons).
* ''Manga/GhostInTheShell'':
** The author explains that this is why [[FullConversionCyborg full-body prostheses]], like those of Motoko Kusanagi (whose only remaining organic components are her [[BrainInAJar brain and nervous system]]), are preferable. The manga points out that if someone were to get, for example, [[ArtificialLimbs his arm replaced with a prosthetic]], his biological body would still be subject to the strain of muscle fibers tearing where the arm is connected if they lift too much weight. Full-body prosthetics, on the other hand, have theoretically limitless strength (since it's now all a matter of technology), enabling them to [[InASingleBound jump huge distances]] and survive the impact of the landing (albeit [[GroundShatteringLanding the ground will take damage]]).
** The [[Anime/GhostInTheShell1995 animated film]] also goes into some detail regarding the drawbacks of such a body. In one scene, it's mentioned that a full body cyborg like Motoko has a much denser body than a non-augmented human, which means that in a body of water without the proper buoyancy aids or position on the water, she'd sink to the bottom like a stone, which clashes with her hobby of SCUBA diving. In another, one of the most famous scenes of the film, Motoko attempts to rip the hatch off of a SpiderTank. However, while she can hold onto it just fine, her body gives out before the hatch does, and she succeeds in [[AnArmAndALeg tearing her own arms off at the biceps]] when the material her body is made of breaks from the stress.
* ''Franchise/{{Gundam}}'': According to the backstory of ''[[Anime/MobileSuitZetaGundam Zeta Gundam]]'', TransformingMecha are only possible, or at least practical, due to a revolutionary variable-friction magnetic coating on their joints that was first used by the original RX-78 series Gundams. This allows them to change in a snap. Without it, their joints would either be too rigid and their TransformationSequence would take hours, or else their limbs and other moving parts would constantly be flopping around and falling out from under them. ''Zeta Gundam'' even features an early FlawedPrototype transforming mecha that had its transforming capabilities engineered out due to mechanical issues. Later, it was later revealed that the Movable Frame pioneered by Kamille's father also made it possible as it created a skeletal frame for the suit to move with (This is also TruthInTelevision as it also helped create modern day Gunpla.)
** There is also the idea of beam rifle technology. Mobile Suits initially had power generators too small and weak to use beam weaponry like a battleship could. However, the creation of the energy capacitors (or e-caps) allowed a beam weapon to gather energy within a battery and all it needed to fire was just a little bit of energy from its generator to fully unleash it. This is what made the Gundam so fearful.
** According to ''Origin'', it also took several generations of development before they were able to develop a generator powerful enough to run a mecha for a non-trivial amount of time while being small enough to be installed on one. Doing this was necessary for transforming the Mobile Worker - a bipedal construction robot powered by an umbilical cord connected to a generator - into the Mobile Suit - a weapon of war capable of operating outside its carrier.
** The AMBAC (Active Mass Balance Auto-Control) system is what makes mobile suits in the UC superior to most other forms of weapons in space; AMBAC allows the mobile suit to course-correct with limb movements rather than thrusters in a near zero-g enviroment, allowing for very precise turns and movement that would otherwise require many thrusters mounted across the hull of the vehicle. This in turn allows mobile suits to be very mobile and carry weapons that would otherwise be too heavy to mount on conventional small space crafts. This would later bite Zeon in the butt when the war shifted to Earth, where this didn't apply anymore and they had to start developing other forms of mobile weapons.
* This often comes up in ''Manga/HeavensDesignTeam'' whenever someone (usually Saturn) tries to create a "mythical" beast. If they are not outright rejected by the engineers, the resulting animal often dies quickly because their biology is unable to support their supposedly magnificent attributes (e.g. wings, horns, flight, etc.). To wit:
** The horse's body is too large and heavy to be supported on wings. For a pegasus's wings to function, they need to have about 50 more times the upper body strength, and would need to have their discharge frequency increased so as to not be weighed down by their excrement. In other words, it would have to be a super ripped, muscular horse that poops constantly, which would ''really'' inconvenience the creatures living below.
** The unicorn can't survive in the natural environment because it would require a lot of calcium to sustain its horn, which it is unable to sufficiently obtain from their grass-based diet. The team tries to mitigate this issue by modifying the horn (making it hollow to reduce the calcium requirement, increasing the springiness to prevent breakage, etc.), but it still takes too much energy to sustain, so the creatures have next to no strength to do anything else, and dies very easily. The only possible way to make this design work is to either give the horse multiple stomach (making it fat like a cow) or reducing its intelligence (which also reduces their survivability for a completely different reason).
** Similar to the pegasus, the dragon is too large and bulky to feasibly fly, especially without wings. Jupiter and Venus's ideas to make the dragon light enough to float is to internally fill it with gas using intestinal bacteria to digest food (i.e. make it float via farting), which Mercury immediately rejects.
* It is assumed that the SuperStrength of the vampires in ''Manga/{{Hellsing}}'' comes with a limited form of telekinesis to deal with recoil. It's the only way that Seras could fire a gun that weighs three times as much as she does on full auto without bracing against anything without going flying.
* In ''Literature/HighSchoolDXD'', Issei's power is having Boosted Gear, a Sacred Gear that doubles his power every ten seconds to the point that he can kill ''any deity'' whatsoever. The drawback however is that his stamina also gets drained because his body cannot handle the stress of his Sacred Gear's power. This leads him to undergo TrainingFromHell twice, once from Rias, and another one from [[OurDragonsAreDifferent Tanninim.]]
* ''Manga/HunterXHunter'':
** [[ExploitedTrope Exploited]] with the ability "[[SolarAndLunar Sun & Moon: Paired Destruction]]" creates markers on two surfaces, one of the Sun and the other of the Moon. If the markers come in physical contact with each other, both surfaces will explode. Chrollo, upon [[PowerCopying stealing this ability]], learns that the markers cannot be removed once deployed. He then deduces that in order for that effect to be possible, the markers must also grant invulnerability to all damage and deterioration until they explode. Chrollo then decides to use Sun & Moon more for its secondary ability than its intended one: He uses Sun & Moon to grant said invulnerability to [[MarionetteMaster his puppets]], and, through a [[LoopholeAbuse loophole]], allows him to retain Sun & Moon even after the original user has died (ordinarily, he would lose the ability).[[note]]Chrollo leaves a Sun marker or Moon marker without its counterpart somewhere hidden and remote. Since the ability is still active, and because the thing he attached a marker to cannot be destroyed in any way, and thus the ''incomplete marker'' cannot be destroyed in any way, even through Chrollo's own power-copying limitations, Chrollo can be sure he can continue to use Sun & Moon for the rest of his life.[[/note]]
** Discussed with the ability "[[HavingABlast Little Flower]]", an ability created by Genthu in which he can blow up anything he holds in his palms. Gon asks his mentor Biscuit how he can use that power without blowing up his own hands, and Biscuit correctly guesses that Genthru has to also create armor on his hands through his Nen, or life force. This brings up a further required power in that Little Flower consumes a huge amount of Nen, as Genthru has to expend some of it for the explosions and an equal amount or even more to protect himself. This means Little Flower can only be done by someone with large amounts of Nen, which Genthru happens to have.
* In ''Literature/IsThisAZombie'', Ayumu Aikawa is a zombie, meaning he can survive and recover from nearly any injury. Unfortunately, he can still feel pain. He also has super strength, but since his body is not super durable, he can break his own arm from the force of his own punch.
* In ''Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure'', Funny Valentine's Stand [=D4C=] (aka ''Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap'') allows him to transport between parallel universes, or send others between them as well. It also protects him from [[NeverTheSelvesShallMeet being wiped out of existence if he should come into contact with an alternate-universe self]] (which is both a serious occupational hazard of dimensional travel and - thanks to his immunity to it - one of his deadliest weapons), even enabling him to use the body of an alternate self to recover from severe injuries.
** From the same part, Johnny Joestar's stand Tusk and its subsequent ACTS allow him to shoot his fully grown fingernails with the velocity and piercing capabilities of a bullet. It's also a good thing that Tusk is courteous enough to actually ''regrow'' said bullets within a few seconds (or a few minutes if he fires a much stronger shot), otherwise he'd have to wait from anywhere of four weeks to six months for his nails to come back and "reload". It's also mentioned that he carries a certain kind of tea that, when drunk, speeds up his nail growth.
** Earlier on, Vanilla Ice (no, not [[Music/VanillaIce the real one]], but named after the real one) can turn into an invisible and mobile SphereOfDestruction, which removes from existence anything that touches it. Polnareff and Iggy, who have to fight him, soon discover that, because the ball is invisible, Vanilla Ice cannot see when in this form, meaning he can only attack blindly and has to emerge from it to understand what's going on.
** The Elder D'Arby brother's stand Osiris traps the soul of anybody who loses to D'Arby at any kind of betting game into a poker chip. To facilitate this power at what should be games of chance, D'Arby is an ''extraordinarily good'' cheater and CrazyPrepared beside (he routinely buys every staff member and bystander where he sets up the game, so that no matter who the opposition picks to be a judge or dealer, they still cheat in his favor). Jotaro ultimately wins not by out-cheating him, but by aggressively out-bluffing him until he had a breakdown. D'Arby also mentions that he HAS to be beaten on his terms to free his victims, attempting CuttingTheKnot by just killing him won't work and all his victims will remain trapped as chips.
** Diavolo's stand King Crimson can skip time by up to ten seconds, essentially eliminating the first step in causation by forcing everyone and everything to unconsciously act out the time it "erased". The reason why its such a massively overpowered stand is because of its sub-ability called Epitaph, which lets him see the time that it was about to erase, [[BatmanGambit thus letting him prepare and set his actions accordingly]]. Without Epitaph, Diavolo would be confused and disorientated just like every other character ([[MindScrew and a first-time reader, no doubt]]) who fights him, as it would look roughly similar to a grand-scale TeleportSpam.
** To utilize a Stand at all requires one to have the proper amount of HeroicResolve (or the villainous equivalent thereof) to get it to do what you want. This has been brought up a few times when weak-willed people somehow manage to gain a Stand that they then can't control (such as Masozo Kinoto and Cheap Trick) or can cause the Stand to actively reject its User and do them harm (such as when Holly Kujo acquired her unspecified Stand through her shared bloodline with DIO/Jonathan Joestar that created a horrible illness in her that slowly started killing her).
** DIO's ability to [[spoiler:[[TimeStandsStill stop time]] comes with the ability to ''move around'' while time is stopped. However, both abilities have the same time limit of about eleven seconds, so when Jotaro uses his own (three-second) time-stopping powers to extend the stopped time to thirteen seconds, DIO himself ends up frozen in time for the last two of those seconds.]] Also, both of them have the ability to see and think [[spoiler:during stopped time, even when they're unable to move,]] a capability denied to everyone else.
** It's mentioned later that [[spoiler: stopping time]] is an ability that is ''extremely'' burdensome on a human body, after awakening to the ability Jotaro rarely uses it in later parts because of the extreme strain it causes. As an immortal and superhuman vampire, DIO has more than enough strength and with his healing factor damage to his organs are irrelevant, which is why he can use The World's special ability so frequently, and also why he can manage it for eleven seconds while Jotaro, at best, can manage 3 at the peak of his ability to use it. In Part 4, he can use it for even less time than that until realizing how handy it is, when he spends the time between parts 4 and 6 training his ability back up to snuff.
** Averted by Yoshikage Kira's Killer Queen [[spoiler:[[GroundhogDayLoop Bites the Dust]]. Although he remembers how things went ''before'' his initial activation of Bites the Dust, his RippleEffectProofMemory doesn't seem to extend to subsequent automatic triggers; on Hayato's second loop Kira guesses that he's been through 'three or four from the look of it'. Despite this, Hayato ''does'' remember all of the loops.]] In addition, Kira isn't immune to SplashDamage from Killer Queen's explosions.
** A really unique case in Tonio Trussardi's Pearl Jam. Usually stands translate any damage to the stand back to the user; this includes not only physical damage, but also cases like Enya suffocating when Star Platinum inhaled her Justice or Steely Dan becoming immobilized when his Lovers was pinned. However, Tonio's Pearl Jam's main power is to dramatically enhance the natural healing properties of any food that he chops it up and mixes it into. Obviously that wouldn't work out very well if damage to Pearl Jam translated back to Tonio, so Pearl Jam is a rare type of Stand called a Colony Stand, which consists of multiple sub-bodies that take up so little of the stand's total mass that damage to the user is negligible at most even in the face of the total destruction of a handful of sub-bodies. Additionally, while Pearl Jam confers healing properties onto any dish that Tonio cooks, only specific dishes can cure specific ailments, and it doesn't provide any means by which those ailments can be diagnosed. Tonio himself is apparently skilled enough at palm reading to gain that knowledge.
** Viviano Westwood from [[Manga/JojosBizarreAdventureStoneOcean part six]] has the stand Planet Waves, which attracts micrometeors to his position. Fortunately for him, the stand also makes the meteors disintegrate before they touch his skin. [[spoiler:Unfortunately for him, the stand ''doesn't'' disintegrate anything that's been ''struck'' by the meteors and propelled towards him with equivalent momentum, like, say, a brick.]]
** [[Manga/JojosBizarreAdventureDiamondIsUnbreakable Kishibe Rohan]]'s stand Heaven's Door allows him to turn other people into books, which in turn allows him to literally read and even edit their memories, personality, and skills. However, he can only use this ability on someone who is currently perceiving one of his unpublished drawings, which is where his version of this trope comes into play; his superhuman drawing skills allow him to fully draw an entire page of his manga in mere seconds, and in later episodes when Heaven's Door has a physical form, he summons it by literally drawing it into existence in midair with ink. Strangely, according to WordOfGod, his drawing skills are completely unrelated to his Stand; where, then, they do come from [[MakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext is never explained.]]
** Enrico Pucci, the BigBad of ''Stone Ocean'', is defeated due to lacking several of these. [[spoiler:Made in Heaven lets him move at the speed of light, but he still has to ''cover'' the distance between Point A and Point B, and he only has a normal human's stamina, leaving him exhausted for much of the final battle. It also speeds up his metabolism; while this means injuries heal in seconds, it also means any poisons or toxins affect him that much faster. Emporio manages to defeat him by luring him into a sealed room, then using Weather Report to greatly increase the room's oxygen content - Emporio is affected at the normal rate, but Pucci suffers the effects of oxygen toxicity almost immediately.]]
* ''Manga/JujutsuKaisen'': Iori Hazenoki can make pieces of his body explode, allowing him to use parts of his body, like his teeth or eyeballs, as bombs. This ability would be far less practical if he couldn't heal himself with reverse cursed technique afterwards.
* In ''Manga/TheLuciferAndBiscuitHammer'', Yuuhi is bequeathed Hangetsu's [[CharlesAtlasSuperpower phenomenal martial arts skills]] thanks to the latter's dying wish, but he initially lacks the actual physical fitness to make them worthwhile. He ends up spending a lot of time training his body in the martial arts so that he can use Hangetsu's skills to the fullest.
* Since magic in ''Franchise/LyricalNanoha'' is based on complex mathematical equations, mages must have a very good and extensive mathematical knowledge. Before becoming a mage herself, Nanoha has been stated to be very good in math and Fate is stated to be good enough to be able to tutor Nanoha's older sister, who is a college student. Nanoha's skill set also required physical strength and endurance, as her most powerful spells are {{Wave Motion Gun}}s that are explicitly stated to strain the body if used frequently. By ''[[Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce Force]]'', Nanoha can carry a {{BFG}} with ''one arm'' while carrying the rest of the cannon's equally bulky attachments ''at the same time.''
* In ''Manga/MedakaBox'', part of Mogana Kikaijima's training as a swimmer gives her superhuman lung capacity, allowing her to hold her breath for up to a month or [[SuperScream use her voice as a weapon]].
* In one episode of ''VideoGame/MegaManStarForce'', Cancer Bubble grew to a prodigious size. However, as he didn't become any heavier or more powerful, he was still a pushover for Mega Man.
* In ''Anime/MobileFighterGGundam'', it's revealed that the Gundam Fighters that pilot their Gundams are trained to be used to the skintight Mobile Trace System that allows them to control their suits. When Rain, forced to pilot the Shining Gundam, uses the system, she's forced to the floor and in pain because her body isn't used to it and a little kid was equally injured when he tried to hijack the God/Burning Gundam in frustration.
* ''Manga/MyHeroAcademia'' acknowledges this trope by including the main power and all the mechanisms that allow it to function within a single denomination (Quirk Factor). It also plays with the trope by often giving the secondary powers limits of their own.
** One For All is an incredibly powerful Quirk that is passed from generation to generation and basically turns its user into a FlyingBrick (although without actual flight). However, it doesn't come with the Secondary Power of actually allowing the user to safely USE all that power. When Midoriya gets it, he trains for months and gains a toned physique, and still can't use more than a fraction of its power without destroying his body (the first time he used it he shattered most of the bones in his legs and arms). All Might (who had the Quirk before) didn't have this problem initially due to having a strong enough body to withstand it, but decades of wear on his body (both using One for All and natural wear) combined with injuries sustained from fighting his rival All For One have put such enormous strain on his body that he can only use it for very brief periods of time, which is why it's time to pass it on.
*** The reason Midoriya was able to stand after his fight is because the school nurse [[HealingFactor could enhance people's normal healing abilities]]. However, as her powers only enhance the body's natural processes, her patient's are drained of energy afterwards, and she has a limit to how much damage she can fix at once without killing the patient. She also cannot prevent the long-term damage Midoriya was doing to his arms.
*** Midoriya's problem with managing how much of One for All's power his body can tolerate when he actively uses it is made even worse because of its stockpiling nature, meaning that when All Might gave it to him, it has had ''generations'' to increase its power and the former has had it for decades, allowing his body to adapt to the gradual increase of power and the strain it puts on him.
*** [[InvertedTrope Inverted]] with the first user of One For All, who was born with the ability to pass down Quirks to others but lacked a ''primary'' power to pass down and was considered [[{{Muggles}} Quirkless]] until his brother All For One gave him one, creating the quirk in question.
** Katsuki Bakugo is resistant to his own HavingABlast powers, but not completely immune. If he goes too far with it, his arms go numb. Furthermore, he creates explosions through nitroglycerin-like sweat, which he is capable of secreting from his hands at will; this means he can take longer to start up in colder temperatures.
** Similarly, Shoto Todoroki can create [[AnIcePerson ice]] and [[PlayingWithFire fire]] while not being affected by burns, but is not immune to either frostbite or overheating, which happens if he goes too far with either power but not the other (he can avoid this by simply using both elements in conjunction so that his body temperature is always regulated, although this also means that each element ends up weakening the other due to them being mixed and requires greater concentration to manage). He gets part of this from his father, Endeavor, who only has [[PlayingWithFire the fire part]] of Shoto's powerset. While Endeavor is immune to being burned by his own powers, overuse of those powers still overheats his body. It's heavily implied that at least part of the reason that Endeavor married someone with ice powers was so that any of his children who managed to inherit both Quirks (that is, the aforementioned Shoto) would have a secondary power that could mitigate the drawbacks that hold Endeavor himself back.
** Tenya Iida is built like a bodybuilder, so that the upper half of his body can keep up with his literal [[SuperSpeed engine legs]].
** For whatever reason, Minoru Mineta himself is the only thing that's immune to his own sticky hairballs. Otherwise, they would just get stuck to his hands.
** Denki Kaminari can generate his own electricity, but while most of his body is immune to the electric currents, emitting that electrical charge to rapidly leaves ''his brain unable to function'', at least at full capacity, because he has to "recharge" his electricity.
** Momo Yaoyorozu can create any object as long as she has an in-depth knowledge of its atomic structure. To aid her she carries a massive engineering book on her back so that she can quickly reference the chemcial and structural makeup of complicated devices like speakers or what have you.
*** Anyone with an I.Q. below genius-level would not be able to create all the cool, complex technological stuff like firearms and computers without having to look at it in a picture in the first place. Also, all the mass she needs to create those things [[CastFromCalories come from ingested food]], so "molecular conversion of fat to mass" ends up being one of her required secondaries, as is "[[BigEater able to eat large quantities in order to replenish fat reserves]]".
*** Momo needs several secondaries for her powers to work as depicted: She doesn't create nuclear explosions from fusing atoms together; She emits the objects from her skin similar to the nozzle of a 3d printer, and she must partially borrow the energy to create mass from somewhere, since she isn't huge. Not to mention the health effects of rapid weight gain or loss.
** Shota Aizawa, AKA Eraser Head (no, [[{{Film/Eraserhead}} not that one]]), notably ''lacks'' these. His power allows him to nullify people's Quirks as long as he is looking at them uninterrupted. The problem is that he needs to blink, like any regular person. As a result, he gets dry-eye from needing to spend long periods without blinking, in order for the effects of his Quirk to last long enough.
** The Training Camp arc introduces a villain called "Mustard". Mustard can create massive clouds of vision-obscuring toxic gas. However, it seems he lacks immunity to said gas as a secondary power, since he wears a gas mask. He does, however, have the power to sense movements through the gas, allowing him to know what's going on around him while everyone else goes around blindly.
** Another villain, Dabi ([[spoiler:aka Touya Todoroki]]), has an extremely powerful [[PlayingWithFire fire Quirk]], but he's not immune to his own flames, which is why [[BodyHorror he's covered in burn scars held together by medical staples]]; his frequent mid-battle {{Hannibal Lecture}}s are actually a strategy to keep his body from overheating. As it turns out, this is the result of [[spoiler:his mother, Rei Todoroki, being AnIcePerson]], meaning that he got the ''wrong'' set of secondary powers.
** Mirio Togata has a form of phasing, which lets him become intangible and pass through solid objects. However, he ''lacks'' many of the secondaries that would allow him to otherwise function normally while using his power. When intangible, everything, including light and oxygen, passes through him, meaning he can't see, hear, or breathe while using his power. He can't easily keep his clothes on, either. If he goes far enough he can even sink into the ground. One of the few secondaries that he ''does'' have is that, when he returns to being tangible while overlapping something solid, his body will eject itself from whatever he's inside at the time to avoid a TeleFrag. Mirio weaponizes this aspect to enable him to move quickly by sinking into the ground and positioning himself to be shot a certain way when becoming tangible again. And even there he has no secondary power to help him point himself in the right direction. When fully intangible and thus cut off from all his senses, Mirio has no point of reference for what direction his body is facing in the first place, or whether he's shifted to face where he wants to. As such he has to know his position ''from memory'' and calculate in his head which way he needs to shift his body.
** Hero costumes are often designed to invoke this, reducing or nullifying the negative effects that tend to come with every Quirk. In Mirio's case, his costume had to be woven from ''his own hair'', because even after being cut it still counts as part of his body for the purposes of his intangibility Quirk.[[note]]Which makes sense; the shaft of a human hair is already made up of dead cells, as are fingernails and toenails. Since those don't fall off when Mirio uses his Quirk, naturally neither does a costume made out of his hair.[[/note]]
** GreaterScopeVillain [[AllYourPowersCombined All For One]] has the ability to steal Quirks for his own use, as well as give them to others.
*** When he does give away Quirks, the recipients' bodies have to be artificially reinforced with bioengineering techniques to handle more than two or three (or even one, if it's powerful enough) without exploding, and even with the reinforcement they're often left as mindless beasts afterwards. All For One himself, though, has an unknown number of Quirks [[note]]at least sixteen known by name, many in multiples, and he's implied to have dozens more he hasn't shown off[[/note]] kept in his own body, and doesn't seem to suffer any negative effects from them at all. [[spoiler:''However'', it's revealed eventually that All for One was worried this particular secondary power would eventually hit a limit if he kept taking Quirks since Quirks have been naturally increasing in potency with every generation since their inception, meaning one day he might take Quirks too powerful for his body to withstand. This was why he had one of his top minions, a scientist well-versed in Quirks, to dedicate a great deal of time and research to artificial augmentation in order to strengthen his (and later his to-be successor Tomura's) body to nip this in the bud.]]
*** All For One avoids stealing Quirks that requires either in-depth knowledge of something or great experience to be useful, for the simple reason he just doesn't have the time to master them
** Ochaco Uraraka has a limit as to how much mass she can effect with her GravityMaster Quirk, which is about three thousand kilograms. Going over it strains and exhausts her body. However, if she uses it on herself, she ''lacks'' immunity to nausea caused by being weightless that most people have and has to train herself much like how astronauts train to be in Zero-G to be able to manage it when using it on herself. She even has her Hero Costume modified to help with that by stimulating pressure points that relieve nausea.
** Yuga Aoyama can fire a beam of force from his navel. However, his stomach has little protection from the recoil, as he gets stomachaches fairly quickly when using it, and can suffer PottyFailure if he takes it too far. [[spoiler:Turns out that this was likely because he was originally Quirkless, and had Navel Laser given to him by All for One]].
** Kyouka Jirou can use the special headphonejacks growing out of her earlobes to amplify her hearing through solid objects, as well as transmit the sound of her own pulse through them. However, while listening she becomes exponentially more vulnerable to loud noises transmitted through whatever medium she's "plugged into", and her pulse transmission requires something to jack her earlobes into, such as an amplifier, to be effective as an offensive weapon
** Ashido Mina can emit acid sweat from her skin. However this being HollywoodAcid she has to have a special uniform made just for her to resist burning through her clothes, and her acid still takes time to eat through things, forcing her to focus her attention on cutting holes or penetrating whatever she's trying to get through. This forces her into a binary choice in combat, as she must either fight and defend herself, or focus on getting through obstacles.
** Monoma Neito can [[PowerCopying copy other quirks]], however he copies ''all'' of them. So quirks that take time to get going such as One For All and its stockpiling, or quirks that require physical modifications such as Tails or Wings, are useless to him as he lacks the time to build them up and lacks the appendages to use.
** Kendō Itsuka has a number of the obligatory secondary abilities. As her hands grow larger her arms and body grow proportionally stronger to compensate for the added mass, and her fine dexterity improves to compensate for the greater size of her digits. However her power [[ExtremityExtremist ''only'']] applies to her hands, leaving the rest of her vulnerable, and as strong as her hands get, they don't become significantly more durable, so bullets, knives, explosives, etc are still a threat to her.
** Kodai Yui can alter the size of objects, however her quirk only works on inanimate objects and as a result she cannot make herself or others larger (for the combat benefits) or smaller (to make subduing or capturing them easier) and if you can deprive her of stuff that doesn't fit the arbitrary size requirements for her quirk to affect it, such as anything as large as a large vehicle, she's literally a regular human.
** Komori Kinoko can near-instantly grow mushrooms anywhere she can get her spores...the issue is she has to get her spores there first. As a result, hot and dry climates significantly hamper her ability to spread her quirk out, and she remains a SquishyWizard otherwise.
** Fukidashi Manga can manifest any word he says (He typically uses onomatopoeia), however because he still has to ''say'' them, using his quirk for extended periods can give him a sore throat or cost him his voice temporarily
** Tsunotori Ponī can fire her horns like a cannon, and they instantly regrow back. She can also remotely pilot them, to the point where she can even use them to fly by standing atop them and piloting them around
** Tokage Setsuna can split her body into numerous fragments, and even benefits from levetation and regeneration to avoid the usual drawbacks of splitting bits of yourself off without clear means of locomotion. However the more fragments she separates herself into the more rapidly she tires, and if her parts are left autonomous for too long they cease to function and must be regrown.
* In ''Literature/MyriadColorsPhantomWorld'', Haruhiko shares Mai's memories and gains her martial arts skills in the process. Unfortunately, he's horrendously out of shape, so that knowledge doesn't do him any good as he lacks the strength, speed, and stamina to apply these skills.
* In ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' the Fourth Hokage's "Flying Thunder God" technique lets him teleport to within a certain distance of a [[HermeticMagic seal]] which he puts on weapons and enemies, thus avoiding {{Tele Frag}}ging by only teleporting to places likely to be close to open space. Likewise Tobi once implied that he can detect things (or at least people) from great distances, which would also probably explain why he never teleports into random objects.
** In a case of FridgeBrilliance, the ability to warp to several targets at once ''within seconds'' with the jutsu would require a good dose of HyperAwareness. Otherwise, the user's perception of time and space would be screwed up badly. Worst case scenario, if the user fails to do this, their bodies could be wrecked.
** It's stated that the SuperSpeed charge the [[ShockAndAwe Chi]][[ElementalPunch dori]] is used at would make it impossible/impractical because it's so fast that it causes a tunnel vision effect if Kakashi and Sasuke didn't have their Sharigan eyes to speed up their reflexes. The same goes for Kiba and Akamaru's Dual Wolf Fang (which is even harder for them to see while using since it also has them [[TornadoMove spinning the whole time]]), so they need to have Akamaru [[UrineTrouble piss on the enemy beforehand]], so they can find their target [[TheNoseKnows by scent]].
** The sharingan itself has a similar problem as the Chidori: it grants the user superhuman perception but not superhuman agility. Sometimes a sharingan user can predict an attack and see exactly where it's coming from, but if their body can't keep up with their opponent they still won't be able to dodge/block in time.
** Another example is Naruto's Rasenshuriken jutsu. At first his own arm would get busted up due to recoil damage, since it's a Rasengan-based technique and sits on the palm of his hand. After he gained [[SuperMode Sage mode]], the enhanced chakra gave Naruto the extra powers he needed to be able to throw the damn thing.
*** Also, most of his Rasengan techniques require this. Due to his poor chakra control, he relies on his clones to assist in properly forming even a basic Rasengan. He eventually removes the need when obtains a different secondary super power, [[spoiler:the ability to form chakra arms with the Kyuubi's chakra]].
*** Naruto's HealingFactor also qualifies. It's based on rapid mitosis, which shortens his life every time he uses it. However, he has longevity on his side- members of his clan are very long lived, so he can still live to a ripe old age even after having his skin burned off multiple times.
*** In fact, every Nine Tails Jinchuriki has been from his clan, precisely ''because'' they have the secondary powers to handle it.
** Sakon and Ukon's ability to fuse their bodies with each other [[BodyHorror or other people]] requires them to be able to greatly manipulate the structure of their own body in some other ways, including healing themselves.
** [[spoiler:Susanoo]] generates a very strong ForceField, but it lacks anchoring (its user has been both knocked into another room, although not injured, and nearly sucked into the mouth of a giant monster) and at least slightly air permeable (an acidic mist was able to get through it, albeit it's still better than being unprotected).
** [[AllThereInTheManual The databooks]] state that the [[DishingOutDirt Earth]] technique to [[TunnelKing burrow underground]] has the user act as a human compass to keep track of their location and sense what's above so they know where to attack when coming up.
** Mabui's ability to move a target from one location to another at the speed of light is largely limited to inanimate objects. For a living being to survive, they either need to have advanced self-healing, like Tsunade, or have NighInvulnerability like the Third Raikage.
** Kimimaro's ability to generate vast quantities of bone and project it from his skin as weapons and/or armor would necessarily require him to have some kind of healing factor so he doesn't hemorrhage to death every time he uses it.
** Tailed Beast Transformation requires the cooperation of the tailed beast, or else the technique will backfire (possibly hilariously).
** [[spoiler:Kabuto]]'s Sage Art: White Rage Technique acts as a flashbang combined with producing enough noise to make the air oscillate from the vibrations, blinding and paralyzing the opponent. He must [[spoiler:use his snake-like cornea to block out the light and Suigetsu's Hydration Technique to liquefy his organs so they can absorb the sound]].
* In ''Manga/NegimaMagisterNegiMagi'', the main downside of Negi's [[ShockAndAwe Raiten]] [[ElementalShapeshifter Taisou]] is that Negi ''doesn't'' have the required secondary powers, and must control himself through extremely advanced wind magic, which, due to requiring him to previously "mark" the destination and making him unable to actually react to change course mid-air, make it very possible to counter it by just obstructing the way between Negi and his target. [[spoiler:Raiten Sousou, its upgraded version, provides the required secondary powers.]]
* ''Franchise/OnePiece'':
** Brook is basically ''made'' out of these. He ate the Yomi Yomi no Mi (Revive-Revive Fruit), which allowed him to return to life once after he died. The ship he was on when he died was in a dense fog, and consequently it took him a year to locate his body and revive, in which time his body had decomposed until all that was left was a skeleton with an afro ([[ItRunsOnNonsensoleum strong roots]]). Fortunately, the Fruit's powers also provided him with everything he needed to survive; he can move without muscles, see without eyes, hear without ears, speak (''[[SuperDrowningSkills and drown]]'') without lungs, eat without a stomach, use a toilet without bowels ([[RunningGag Luffy asked]]), etc. Then we have his ''actual'' powers: in life he was over 8 feet tall and pretty strong (if not super strong). He maintains that same level of strength and can even increase it with time, but now his body is a mere fraction of the weight, allowing him to leap incredible distances and run across water. It turns out that all of his secondary powers are a result of a special energy given off by his soul, and post-TimeSkip he's learned to channel this energy for [[HeartIsAnAwesomePower all sorts of supernatural effects]], from AstralProjection to MassHypnosis to a ''[[AnIcePerson weaponized]]'' GhostlyChill in [[ColdFlames fire form]].
** Luffy can bleed so much without dying because one of his secondary powers is a circulatory system that can make extra blood instantaneously to pump into his stretched out limbs. In fact, his rubberized organs, bones, and indeed every single vital part of his anatomy is the only reason he is able to withstand the stresses inherent in his Gear Second SuperMode. According to Rob Lucci, if anyone but Luffy were to use something like Gear Second, their heart would ''explode''.
** The two basic forms of Haki are this: Observation Haki allows you to be so in tune with your surroundings that you can sense what's about to happen, and Armament Haki allows you to coat yourself in a suit of armor. Unfortunately, being able to predict what's going to happen doesn't do you much good if you can't stop or avoid it, and if someone is powerful enough to break your armor, what's the point of having it? Boa Sandersonia and Boa Marigold, respectively, learned that the hard way when they took on Gear Second Luffy.
** During the Syrup Village Arc, Captain Kuro is revealed to be able to FlashStep, but when he's doing so, he can't see where he's going or who he's attacking, and thus is a threat to both friend and foe alike. Of course, this is counteracted by the fact that Kuro [[BadBoss doesn't really care if he cuts down his own allies anyway]]. WordOfGod stated that [=CP9's=] "Soru" specifically averts this, because the training to learn it includes developing your senses to the point they can keep up with the increased speed.
** Mr. 5's Bomb-bomb fruit lets him turn any part of his body, even something as abstract as his ''breath'', into an explosive. Given that causing a point blank explosion would be a horrendously inefficient power otherwise, he's completely immune to explosives, even ones caused by a third party trying to attack him.
** Logia users seem to receive a lot of secondary powers too, such as Ace, Akainu, and Aokiji, and Monet being temperature resistant, Kizaru having reflexes fast enough to keep up with his light speed movement, and Smoker being able to constantly smoke two cigars without organ trouble. Logia users also have the secondary power of turning their clothes into their element of choice as well, seeing as none of the Logia users are left naked when they turn into their element.
** In fact, ''most'' Devil Fruits affect the user's clothes so that they aren't left naked (Luffy's clothes stretch like rubber when he inflates himself, and don't break; when Buggy splits into pieces, his clothes also split to keep covering the single pieces; and so on). The exceptions are Jewelry Bonney and Ain, because their powers alter the age of a target -- and clothes maintain their original size regardless of age.
** Notably averted with the Op-Op Fruit eaten by Trafalgar Law, or at least its medical capabilities. Initially, Law couldn't heal anyone with it because it required him to have extensive knowledge of the target's anatomy. The Op-Op Fruit only lets him control the space within the "ROOM" he generates; he has to actually know what he's doing and how to be effective. Law eventually realized this weakness and so he spent most of the intervening years between eating the Fruit as a child and his first chronological appearance studying to be a legitimate doctor/surgeon so he could make full use of its potential.
** Luffy also was an aversion initially since it took him years before he reached the skill level of his first appearance in the manga. In the flashbacks, when he tried to punch something his fist would bounce off and he'd sock himself in the jaw due to recoil and lack of aim.
** PlayedForLaughs with Kanjuro, who ate a Devil Fruit allowing him [[ArtInitiatesLife to make real whatever he draws]], be it objects (like ladders), animal (like a giant bird), or even food (like a salad). There's only one problem: [[TerribleArtist He can't draw for shit]], so his ladders end up difficult to climb and oddly shaped, his bird is an abomination that can barely fly, and his salad tastes awful. [[spoiler:It turns out this was all an act. In all the times he was seen up to TheReveal, he'd actually been [[IAmNotLeftHanded using his weaker hand]] to draw. When using his dominant hand, he can actually draw very well, including [[MesACrowd creating doubles of himself]] via perfect self-portraits, each of whom can also bring art to life. He just convinced all of his closest comrades that he can't draw well so they wouldn't suspect him as TheMole.]]
** Artificial SMILE Fruits don't necessarily grant you these, as part of their EvilKnockoff nature (with emphasis on [[ShoddyKnockoffProduct knockoff]]). As an example, Gazelleman can definitely run at gazelle speeds, but lacks the stamina and several other physical attributes of them, so after prolonged distances he's dead tired. And he's one of the lucky ones when it comes to SMILE Fruits.
** Part of why [[CoolOldGuy Whitebeard]] can use [[PersonOfMassDestruction his Tremor-Tremor Fruit powers]] so effectively is that he was ''already'' an ImplacableMan before he got them, [[CharlesAtlasSuperpower thanks to decades of constant training]]; his sheer durability is pretty much the only reason he doesn't get killed by the earthquakes and tsunamis his powers create.
** Boa Hancock's Love-Love Fruit powers rely on the emotion of love, lust, or adoration to have an effect. As the WorldsMostBeautifulWoman, this makes her abilities immensely powerful, as very few have a pure heart that does not hold even a small amount of affection or lust towards her. When Blackbeard tries to steal her Devil Fruit powers, Hancock informs him that her powers are only so strong due to her innate beauty, and it would be worthless for someone like [[{{Gonk}} him]]. [[spoiler:Her Seraphim counterpart S-Snake has the same power. In her case, she's a giant child, so her power is fueled by people finding her adorable.]]
* ''Anime/{{Photon}}'': Aun Freya, who has the power to stop time in a wide area around her, actually lacks the secondary powers to prevent it from affecting herself as well (although she still has the required secondary powers to make sure the part of the world she's affecting still moves with the rest of the world, etc.). It's up to Photon, who is immune to just about anything to go in, knock her out to cancel it, and usually to beat the everloving crap out of whatever scared her so much she used her power.
* ''Anime/PrettyCure'':
** Many series have pointed out that their powers are based off of their mental states. The happier and calmer they are, the stronger and in control they are. [[Anime/HeartcatchPrettyCure Cure Blossom]] and [[Anime/SmilePrettyCure Cure Happy]] have launched themselves airborne in a panic, [[Anime/FutariWaPrettyCureSplashStar Cure Bloom and Cure Egret]] have cancelled out their own forms by having a very bad argument and [[Anime/YesPrettyCure5 Karen Minazuki]] was ''refused'' her Cure Aqua powers at first because of her initial selfish reasoning.
** Jaaku King from ''Anime/FutariWaPrettyCure'' wields the Power of Destruction that allows him to annihilate anything forever. Problem is, he lacks immunity to this power and he is, in fact, slowly being killed by it. The plot of the anime was kick-started by Jaaku King destroying the Garden of Light and stealing the 5 of the 7 [[MacGuffin Prism Stones]] to use their power to wish for immortality before his inevitable death.
* This is referenced in ''Manga/PsychoBusters'' when lead Kakeru wonders whether [[PlayingWithFire Kaito]] ever gets burned by his own flames. He then answers himself saying "Nah! He must have the impervious-to-fire power!". Kakeru later sees Kaito turning down a coffee saying his tongue is sensitive to heat.
* In ''Manga/RanmaOneHalf'' many characters' [[SupernaturalMartialArts training methods]] [[CharlesAtlasSuperpower have provided]] some measure of SuperStrength or SuperSpeed, but not without their drawbacks:
** While training for the Breaking Point technique, which consists of explosively breaking apart "hard" objects like rock, wood, or packed soil, with just the touch of a finger, Ryōga is repeatedly slammed with enormous boulders swinging from a tree until he figures out where the boulder's weak point is and blow it up before getting hit. In combat, Ranma quickly realizes that the Breaking Point is nearly useless as an attack technique because the user is at point-blank range of the explosion, and would thus get pelted with debris; instead, the ''whole point'' is to develop the Required Secondary Power of ''extreme physical toughness'', to the point Ranma's attacks and even getting buried in a rockslide are like love taps to Ryōga.
** Earlier on, Ranma himself has to train hard to develop enough speed to steal a necklace from [[OldMaster Cologne]], speed he can only attain by snatching chestnuts from an open fire. While he quickly uses this newfound speed to develop a RapidFireFisticuffs attack, he doesn't use it very often because he ''lacks'' the ability to throw a few hundreds punches per millisecond without depleting his stamina.
** When TricksterMentor Happōsai robs Ranma of his prodigious strength with a moxibustion technique, it affects all aspects of it: Ranma is left weak enough that he [[InvulnerableKnuckles can't punch without hurting his hand]], can be pushed over by a toddler, and even a friendly pat on the back sends him flying.
** By falling into the Spring of Drowned Asura, the meek and gentle Rouge became a six-armed, fire-spitting, lightning-channeling PhysicalGod with the temper to match. Unfortunately, the spring's transformation magic failed to account for the formidable ''backache'' from carrying around four extra arms, so she can only sustain that form for a little while before being forced to retreat and change back to human form.
** On the other hand, Pantyhose Tarō's own monstrous transformation -- the Spring of [[MixAndMatchCritters Drowned Yeti Riding an Ox While Carrying a Crane and an Eel]] -- provided him with two physical powerhouses (the yeti and the ox) to account for his tremendous strength and stamina despite being a 1.5 story-tall chimera... despite having relatively tiny crane-sized wings to fly with. Unfortunately for him, augmenting his form with octopus tentacles is a double-edged sword: on the one hand, the tentacles' natural instincts allow him to use them with astonishing speed, dexterity, and precision, despite how disorienting it must be to suddenly gain eight extra limbs that are nothing like a vertebrate's arms or wings (and the muscular bulk of his original transformation sidesteps the issues Rouge-Asura faces.) But those same instincts also cause him to get trapped easily in narrow, confined places, as the tentacles will slither in and get stuck on their own accord.
** The [[KamehameHadoken Shishi Hōkōdan, or Lion's Roar Blast]], is a ki attack fueled by the user's negative, "heavy" feelings, like depression or loneliness. It is therefore unusable if the person feels happy or proud while trying to perform it. But this is precisely what makes the user immune to it: the Perfect Shishi Hōkōdan emits a pillar of ki straight up into the air that coalesces into a titanic SphereOfDestruction that crashes down on the battlefield with the force of a meteor, with the user right in the center, unharmed. As Ranma realizes, that's because the ball of "heavy" ki passes right through the user, who is emotionally depleted and thus "transparent" to the technique. Without this required fail-safe, the Perfect Shishi Hōkōdan would flatten the user just as well.
* Nancy Makuhari (a.k.a. "Miss Deep") of ''Anime/ReadOrDie'' possesses the power of [[IntangibleMan intangibility]], but is unable to breathe while using her powers, as air passes through her lungs while she is intangible. This presents the very real danger of drowning while using her powers underwater.
* ''Literature/RebuildWorld'': Alpha has an ImagineSpotting moment reacting to Akira imagining fighting GunsAkimbo, saying that it'd only injure him to do so without the added strength from PoweredArmor, which he proceeds to get and then use for that. At one point, Akira's current set of armor is down for reprogramming mid-mission and firing two rifles during that time is excruciatingly painful for him, taking his {{Nanomachine|s}} HealingPotion some time to repair.
* In ''Manga/SailorMoon'' a powerful and well-trained body is required for fighting, as the magic only augments what's already there. Thus Usagi was quite pitiful at the start while Minako, a naturally gifted athlete, [[TheJuggernaut bulldozed through a horde of mooks]] before annihilating her first kill in ''Manga/CodenameSailorV'', while all of the Senshi's performance increase with experience and exercise.
* At first one might think that the armors in ''Manga/SaintSeiya'' protect the users from the opponents' attacks; in fact, the armor's main function is to protect the user's body from his own powers since a normal human body isn't able to resist such amounts of power. Of course, FridgeLogic kicks in most fights since more often than not the characters end up half-naked.
* Being omnipotent without the omniscience to deduce how your changes will play out is a significant plot point in ''Anime/SerialExperimentsLain''. FridgeBrilliance dictates that they should be able to make themselves omniscient, at least if they are truly omnipotent. Makes one wonder why they don't do it... Maybe it just never occurred to them?
* Either subverted or played incredibly straight in ''Manga/SquidGirl''. It's eventually explained that the reason Squid Girl can pick up people and other heavy objects with her tentacles without losing her balance is that she can alter her weight with her bracelets, becoming heavy enough to anchor herself.
* Subverted with Zelgadiss in ''Literature/{{Slayers}}'', a human/demon/rock golem chimera whose [[NighInvulnerable Nigh-Invulnerability]] comes from him having skin made of ''stone'' (and hair that resembles steel wire). Due to his "monstrous" (in his opinion) appearance, he's willing to lose his supernatural powers as long as he can become fully human again.
* ''Manga/SummerTimeRendering'': Ryuunosuke can [[SymbioticPossession grant his host]] the SuperStrength of a shadow but ''not'' any SuperToughness, so even relatively limited use of this power can cause serious injuries. Hizuru was bedridden for days from the pain of the dislocated shoulder and sprained ankle she received after a quick fight with a stray shadow, [[spoiler: and a single high jump that propels Shinpei several meters into the air is enough to tear the muscles in his leg and make him struggle to walk for the rest of the series.]]
* Similar to the above, the various signature TransformingMecha of ''Anime/SuperDimensionFortressMacross'' and [[Anime/{{Macross}} its sequels]] employ "Energy Conversion Armor" which uses metals and technologies reverse engineered from the eponymous Macross itself (termed "Overtechnology"). This armor can absorb energy and use that energy to reinforce its own structural integrity. According to the various supplementary materials of the series, this is what the energy output of the Reaction Engines is used for when not being 100% committed to thrust. Thus when in Battroid (giant robot) mode, standing on the ground, with 0 thrust, 100% of the engine output is going towards telling the SquareCubeLaw to take a hike.
* Several of the heroes in ''Anime/TigerAndBunny''. The strong, and/or fast ones (Kotetsu, Barnaby, Antonio) are durable enough to use those skills without injuring themselves. [[AnIcePerson Karina]] and [[PlayingWithFire Nathan]] are likely to have resistance to their own elements, and [[ShockAndAwe Pao-Lin]] explicitly states that a taser won't work on her. Possibly odd example in the case of Lunatic [[spoiler: who can create fire in his hands for use in his crossbow, but his flashback in Episode 16 shows that once he's set light to something (or in that instance someone) his fire can still harm Lunatic himself, as his father quite deliberately burnt young Yuri's face.]] Another odd example out is Keith, who can hover using his control over [[BlowYouAway wind]], but can't actually move in the air using his powers alone: his hero suit has a JetPack that lets him do that.
* The lack of these is what caused physical changes in the creatures eventually known as [[spoiler:counter]]dragons in ''Literature/UnlimitedFafnir'' is what lead to their monstrous appearances, as their physical bodies changed to accommodate the powers they possessed. [[spoiler: Iris shows this as she starts growing red diamond scales and changing her "MagicStaff" into a part of her body to use greater levels of the Catastrophe power she inherited from "Red" Basilisk.]]
* ''Manga/UruseiYatsura'':
** Lum, alongside with her ability to generate electricity and throw lightning, is naturally immune to electric shocks herself. She, in fact, can absorb electricity from other sources, which can result in her getting supercharged -- afterward, she'd shock anybody she'd touch, even involuntarily, until enough is discharged. Of note is that her iconic tiger-striped bikini is impervious too; on one occasion, generating a stronger discharge than usual has vaporized her clothes, but not the bikini she uses as underwear. This certainly explains why she's so attached to it.
** Additionally, when questioned about her attire while out in a snowy landscape, Lum replies she is extremely resistant to cold and wind. This makes sense as she's commonly seen flying high up in the sky in the aforementioned bikini, perfectly comfortable, despite being ExposedToTheElements.
