The crew manage to safely float down from the sky and reach their next island, Long Ring Long Land, an island that has animals stretched in length or height. They meet a nomad who's been stuck on the island for a while and offer to help him. But before they can, they're challenged by a pirate who calls himself Foxy the Silver Fox in a game of Davy Back Fight, where the losers can lose their crew members.

----
!!''Davy Back Fight Arc'' has the following tropes:

* AdaptationExpansion: The anime adds three more games to the arc since at the time Oda had just reached Water 7 and needed some time to get ahead. So as such after Groggy Ring, Luffy ends up picking Shelly who the Foxy Pirates captured and gives back to Tonji. An anime only game, Roller Derby, was added in which the crew win and regain Chopper. Foxy coaxes Luffy into a rematch and they play three more games: Pirate Dodgeball (which the crew lose and lose Robin in the process), Red Light Green Light (which they likewise lose and re-lose Chopper again) before moving onto the canonical Combat. The stakes are also made higher by the fact that since the Straw Hats are down two games, winning the last one means they can't regain one of their lost crewmates. Thus to rectify this, Nami haggles Foxy into a winner-take-all bet with their entire crews on the line. Since Luffy's crew is short in number, the result of failure would mean their ''children'' would have to join Foxy's crew. [[Recap/OnePieceFoxysReturnArc There's also a mini-arc where the Straw Hats help Foxy regain his ship after a mutiny.]]
* AdaptationInducedPlotHole: During the Pirate Dodgeball game (anime filler), Chopper eats a second Rumble Ball shortly after the first. It was later revealed that taking a second Rumble Ball within six hours makes him lose control of transformations. This is justified by the fact this scene was made before the manga revealed this limitation.
* AmbiguousSituation: Luffy challenges Aokiji to a one on one fight. After Aokiji predictably crushes him, he wonders whether Luffy made the challenge because he honestly thought he could win, or if he intended to trap Aokiji in a promise not to attack the rest of the crew (as then the fight would no longer be "one on one").
* AnIcePerson: Aokiji ate the Chilly-Chilly Fruit (''Hie Hie no Mi''), which gave him ice-based powers.
* ArcVillain: Foxy. [[LaughablyEvil Sorta]]. He the main "villain" for a majority of this arc. However once it ends...
** DiscOneFinalBoss: The end of the arc sees the Straw Hats squaring off with Marine Admiral Aokiji. And they lose [[CurbStompBattle badly]].
* ArentYouGoingToRavishMe: In the anime, Nami laments that she's certain to be chosen by the Foxy Pirates to become their idol due to her beauty. A pair of passing Foxy Pirates loudly state they have no interest. Nami is visibly offended, only made worse when the pirates say it's because she's too scary.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: PlayedForLaughs, Foxy boasts that the Gorilla Puncher #13 has been upgraded to have no extraneous components. Luffy asking if the machine's gorilla head is necessary heavily rattles him.
* BadBoss: Doflamingo, who forced Bellamy's own second-in-command Sarkiss to seemingly kill the former, for his loss to Luffy.
* BaddieFlattery: Foxy was nice enough to compliment Luffy on his [[FunnyAfro new look]] before their fight.
* BeatThemAtTheirOwnGame: Foxy and his crew played dirty and cheated at every available moment. The Straw Hats not only played mostly fairly (only cheating when absolutely necessary) but won the games.
* BlatantLies: Foxy's attempts to trick the Straw Hats during the race portion are rather obvious.
* BrainlessBeauty: Porche is an attractive but shallow young woman, and not the sharpest tool in the shed.
* BrainsVersusBrawn: The Donut Race. In terms of sheer rowing power, the Foxy Pirates' team, with Capote the fish-man and Monda the shark, have the Straw Hat team beat. But with Nami's skill with navigating currents, Usopp's sniping and Impact dial, and Robin's Flower-Flower Fruit powers, they are able to keep the pace and even take the lead in the latter half. (Helping is that Porche falls for Foxy's 'fake finish line' ploy and gets delayed). The only reason the Straw Hats lose is because of Foxy's Slow-Slow Fruit powers.
* BreatherEpisode: This episode was made to give the readers a break between the Skypiea arc and the [[WhamEpisode Water 7 Arc]]. Even more so in the anime, thanks to AdaptationExpansion adding three extra games and moving the canonical encounter with Aokiji two filler arcs forward.
* {{Calvinball}}: Hit and Dead Ball in the anime is a game as old as the Davy Back Fight and its massive rulebook has filled over time, with at least 999 rules. While some rules are obvious, like hits to the face not counting, others are bizarre such as the only weapon allowed being a ball-shooting mech or allowing "out" members of the crew to throw fake balls at the enemy.
* CoolAndUnusualPunishment: At the end of the Davy Back Fight, Luffy refuses to take a member of the Foxy Pirates and instead just changes their flag. Given how terrible his drawing skills are, they are hardly pleased.
* CPRCleanPrettyReliable: Since they were frozen solid, Chopper not only has to safely thaw Robin and Luffy, but revive them as well. In this case, "reliable" is justified, since the cold definitely bought them time in that respect.
* CurbStompBattle: Luffy, Robin, Zoro, and Sanji vs Aokiji. It winds up with the latter two getting their limbs frozen and the former two turned to human icicles.
* DickDastardlyStopsToCheat: Foxy cheats so many times it actually gave the Straw Hats an advantage even when he was winning.
* FillerArc: A surprisingly canon one for the series. Oda confessed he just did the arc for the fun of it and it has no long term effects on the story save the appearance of Aokiji. However, the island in which Davy Fight Back is mentioned to have originated, Pirate Island, is physically shown nearly ''six-hundred'' chapters and is the location where Blackbeard and his crew are stationed, as well as the place of origin for the PredecessorVillain crew, the Rocks Pirates.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Aokiji mentions how Luffy is similar to his grandfather (who Luffy is deathly afraid of).
** For different reasons, both Bellamy and Admiral Aokiji state that in time, the Straw Hat Pirates will become an infamous and dangerous force on the Sea. This premonition comes to pass from the Enies Lobby Arc onward.
** Doflamingo declares that the pavement for the "New Era" is underway.
** Aokiji also tells Luffy (while frozen) to be wary of Nico Robin and if she stays, she'll be the end of their crew. The crew would have a [[Recap/OnePieceWaterSevenArc breakup]] the next arc.
** The ''Going Merry's'' state of disrepair is also brought up again; more interestingly, one of the shipwrights the Straw Hats are offered after they win the final round has a face almost identical to Franky's.
** The color opening page for Chapter 310 shows Luffy wearing a set of armor from Wano Country, Kozuki emblem and all, hundreds of chapters before anything of that comes into focus.
* FunnyAfro: Luffy dons one for the Combat fight. Usopp claims it enhances Luffy's punches with the strength of black boxers, and everyone [[OnlySaneMan but Nami]] seems to agree it somehow empowers Luffy.
* GoryDiscretionShot: When Doflamingo uses his powers to make Sarkiss slash Bellamy with his kukri blades.
* HarmlessFreezing: Averted. The dangers of Aokiji freezing Luffy and Robin solid are mentioned and shown. They take four days to fully recover.
* HeroAntagonist: Lampshaded. Luffy insists Tonjit can't trust Aokiji because Aokiji is a marine. After Tonjit stares at him in confusion for a bit, Luffy remembers that to ordinary people, marines are the good guys.
* HeroicBSOD: Robin collapsed in fear the second she saw Aokiji.
* HoardingTheProfits: In the gap between Skypiea and Long Ring Longland, Nami proposes to divide the crew's hard-fought gold... by immediately claiming 80% for her personal stash. Even Sanji, who usually worships the ground she walks on, protests.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: In the final attacks, Luffy uses a mirror from one of Foxy's traps to deflect his Slow Slow Beam at him. This makes Foxy vulnerable for a final super-powered punch.
* HonorBeforeReason: Aokiji's honor was the only reason why he didn't capture the Straw Hats. He agreed to fight one-to-one against Luffy and not harm the crew.
** This is also, implicitly, the reason the Straw Hats (sans [[OnlySaneMan Nami]]) take the Davy Back Fight even semi-seriously, when they could probably have just jumped the Foxy Pirates. When the games kick off, Zoro and Sanji even say (in agreement!) that they'd rather die than shrink from the Pirates' Code.
* HopelessBossFight: Luffy (and for that matter, Zoro and Sanji) had no chance against Admiral Aokiji, said to be one of the "Military's Greatest Powers", and one of the strongest characters in the series.
* ImTakingHimHomeWithMe: Porche's, and to a lesser extent Foxy's, reactions upon seeing Chopper. Too bad Porche has NoSenseOfPersonalSpace.
* KnightOfCerebus: '''Aokiji.''' As mentioned below, what was silly and fluffy fun suddenly became [[DarkerAndEdgier dark and metal,]] and a signal for things to come in the [[WhamEpisode following arcs.]]
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: In the anime, Foxy flatly refuses Luffy's demand for a third round to win back his crew. After beating the Fang Frog Pirates and two rounds with the Straw Hats, the Foxy Pirates are exhausted and injured. Foxy thinks knowing when to turn down a challenge is actually one of his greatest strengths.
* LargeHamAnnouncer: The announcer of this arc constantly yells about '''everything''' in these games, to the point where Luffy asked him to shut up.
** Special mention to the Creator/{{Funimation}} dub voice. Creator/IanSinclair ''really'' had fun with hamming it up.
* LetMeAtHim: Luffy has to be restrained several times from attacking the ref during Groggy Ring.
* MsFanservice: Foxy Pirate crew member Gina.
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: Luffy nearly died in aversion of HarmlessFreezing by Aokiji, yet makes absolute light of this by [[SelfDeprecation throwing flour on himself]] and replicating the pose he was stuck in.
* MagicFeather: The [[FunnyAfro afro]] that Luffy was wearing of the Davy Back Fight.
* MoodWhiplash: After all the goofiness (if not some tense moments) of the arc, Aokiji's arrival was a sudden dark 180. A preview of things to come in the next arc.
* NonHumanHumanoidHybrid: Big Pan is the series first and so far only "wotan", a half-giant, half-Fish-man hybrid.[[note]]There's also Sebastian in ''Recap/OnePiece3D2Y'', but that's non-canon.[[/note]]
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Foxy has a fragile ego, is incredibly silly, and isn't all that tough. However, he compensates for this with great cunning, a mastery of dirty tricks, and the Slow-Slow Devil Fruit, a Paramecia that lets him [[TimeStandsStill freeze people and objects in place by manipulating the flow of time]]. His ability to use his powers creatively means he is surprisingly dangerous, to the point that Luffy comes very close to ''losing'' to Foxy, despite having overcome far more physically powerful and destructive foes. Hell, before Luffy, he had never ''lost'' a Davy Back Fight, with nearly 1000 victories to his claim.
* OnTheNextEpisodeOfCatchPhrase: Episode 217's OnTheNext segment ends with Foxy taking over Luffy's CatchPhrase, by saying ''he'll'' become Pirate King.
* OverusedRunningGag: After Luffy decides that he needs to recruit a shipwright for his crew, he once again declares that he'll get a musician as well, prompting the rest of the crew to tell him to stop obsessing over getting one.
* PaperThinDisguise: Foxy wears one that ''still'' manages to fool Luffy.
* PostFinalBoss: Aokiji, as a Marine Admiral, and therefore one of the "Three Greatest Military Powers" takes up the mantle for end of it. His presence also kicked off the Water 7/[=CP9=] Saga.
* QuitYourWhining: Zoro to Chopper after he cries about the possibility of being in Foxy's crew.
* RapidFireFisticuffs: Foxy uses his Slow Slow Beam to enhance his punch barrages such that they can harm Luffy despite his rubber body, and owns a giant mech that's a wall of giant gloves that set opponents on fire. In the climax, both Luffy and Foxy fire a barrage of punches at each other, with Luffy emerging victorious once he takes the chance to reflect Foxy's Slow Slow Beam.
* RedBaron: Foxy "the Silver Fox".
* SeriousBusiness: The Davy Back Fight is treated as an extremely honorable and important event, which all of the Foxy Pirates seem to embrace wholeheartedly and several of the Straw Hats also approach it seriously. Nami's suggestion of the "Peanuts" strategy receives derision because it's seem as shameful.
* ShoutOut: Afro Luffy is one to [[http://www.asianboxing.info/yoko-gushiken.html boxer Yoko Gushiken]], one of Japan's most iconic celebrities.
** Foxy and his two main underlings Porche and Hamburg form a pretty blatant homage to ''Anime/TimeBokan'''s TerribleTrio, with one big twist: this time, it's ''Boyacky'' who's the leader.
* SmallNameBigEgo: Foxy.
* SoBeautifulItsACurse: Nami brings this very trope into question during the Davy Back Fight, believing she'll be the one picked to leave the crew because of how attractive she is.
* SoreLoser: After Luffy wins the final round, Foxy extends a handshake of good sportsmanship. However when Luffy goes to take it, he tries to do an overhead throw. It fails as, thanks to Luffy's rubber body, Luffy's arm just extends and Foxy falls flat on his face.
** The anime likewise showcases this after the Straw Hats win the first round of games. Foxy instantly wants another chance since it was the first time someone bested him. Meaning he lost the Davy Back Fight ''twice'' in one day.
* SpikesOfDoom: One of the Sexy Foxy's traps that Foxy tries to use on Luffy is a room full of spikes. He ends up [[FamilyUnfriendlyViolence falling over them head-first himself]] in the manga, but is comically unharmed immediately afterwards.
* StatingTheSimpleSolution: Just before the boxing match, Nami suggests picking Foxy so Luffy will win by forfeit. Robin points out that while this ''is'' valid, it would mean the Straw Hats will be stuck with Foxy.
* SuicidalOverconfidence: Possibly. After Aokiji easily beats Luffy, he wonders if Luffy challenged him to a one-on-one fight so he wouldn't go after the rest of the Straw Hats, or if Luffy actually thought he could win.
* ThisIsGonnaSuck: Usopp susses out ahead of time that the Foxy's are going to attack their boat during the race and tells Nami they'll need to steer away from shore immediately.
* ToughLove: Zoro to his crewmates.
** When Chopper cries about not wanting to go with the Foxy's, Zoro shouts at him that he is disgracing himself and should wait quietly for the games to be concluded. This seems to be what Chopper needed to hear, as he composes himself and dares the Foxy's to do their worst.
** After the fight with Aokiji, Usopp slumps over and morosely states they'll be encountering powerful foes like the Admiral from now on and he was utterly useless against the marine. Zoro tries to dismiss the worry by brusquely telling him he's babbling because he's tired and should get some rest. Unfortunately, the following arc shows Usopp's insecurities are not so easily brushed aside.
* TournamentArc: A unique variant where the focus is more on playing games than fighting.
* VillainRespect: A RunningGag is the Foxy Pirates being impressed with some incredible display from the Straw Hats and starting to cheer for them instead of their own side, angering Foxy.
* WakeUpCallBoss: Aokiji. He made Luffy realise that with guys like that threatening his crew, he can't afford to be continue his journey at his current level, and actually began to work on pushing himself in secret.
* WeakButSkilled: Foxy isn't all that tough. He is, however, fairly good at boxing, and alongside his Slow Slow Beam, he gave Luffy a real tough time.
* YouHaveFailedMe: Doflamingo punishes Bellamy for his defeat at the hands of Luffy. Though it seems he's been eliminated, [[spoiler: Bellamy would turn up again at Dressrosa]].
!!Story Impact
* The Davy Back Fight Arc is more of a recreational arc in the middle of two larger arcs that are Skypiea and the couple Water 7/Enies Lobby. However, it introduces one of the Marine's greatest forces with Admiral Aokiji and foreshadows Robin's mysterious past.
* Aokiji reveals that the World Government was not taking the Straw Hat Pirates too seriously up until this point, but the addition of Nico Robin changed that. This foreshadows the government's actions against the crew in the subsequent arcs.
* Luffy, doing everything to get his crew back, can be seen as an introduction to the "Rescue Robin" operation in Enies Lobby.
* Zoro and Sanji team up to defeat the Groggy Monsters, showing that they can be an impeccable team despite their frequent bickering.
* The speech Zoro gives Chopper marks a shift in their relationship, with Zoro indulging Chopper's childish nature a lot less often and holding him more accountable for behaving like a pirate.
* Two important decisions are made for the Straw Hat Pirates on their next objectives which would foreshadow the events for the Water 7 arc: Nami suggesting to use the money they earned from the treasures found in Skypiea to repair the Going Merry, along with Luffy making an intelligent choice to find and recruit a shipwright for the crew (in the anime this takes place during the G-8 filler arc).
* The defeat dealt by Aokiji prompts Luffy to create new fighting techniques, that will be Gear Second and Gear Third used for the first time during the Enies Lobby Arc. However the defeat also had a negative impact on Usopp who begins to question his strength in the crew. It later came to a boiling point in the Water 7 arc following the beating he received from the Franky Family, his inability to protect the money to fix the ship, and the conflict with the Going Merry prompted him to leave the crew over his feelings of inadequacy as a Straw Hat member.
* Aokiji mentioned Luffy's grandfather as a man who did him a favor. Luffy was terrified at the mention of him that he did not want to tell Usopp who he is. It would not be until the Post-Enies Lobby arc that his grandfather was revealed to be Garp who already made an appearance in a cover story.
* This arc was a take on a lightheartedness of the story before going into a dark arc. Also, this arc explores the relationship between Usopp and Luffy before the duel in Water 7.
* Usopp is given the Straw Hat prior to Luffy's battle with Foxy, making him the only person aside from Nami that Luffy has entrusted it to.
* The "New Age...of unmatched power" that Doflamingo was talking about in this arc was likely a reference to the production and usage of [=SMILEs=], a name first mentioned to Disco just before Doflamingo abandoned the slave trade which would be further explored in the Punk Hazard arc and Dressrosa arc.
