When a plane crashes carrying hallucinogenic toads, a toad-licking epidemic spreads at James Woods High, and Peter (after he and Lois catch Meg with a wart, which she got from holding a hallucinogenic toad for the popular kids) decides to go undercover as a high schooler to catch any toad lickers -- but ends up in too deep when he becomes friends with the popular kids and is asked out to the dance by Connie D'Amico, the school's most popular girl.
----
!!"Let's Go To The Hop" contains examples of:
* AbhorrentAdmirer: Neil to Meg. He asks her to the Winter dance with a very awkward pickup line and Meg has to remind him that not only is she going to the dance with Lando but to stop asking her out.
* AbusiveParents: A flashback showed that when Lois and her date for a dance were kidnapped, her father refused to pay ransom, stating they don't negotiate with kidnappers, and hung up Lois as she was begging for help before going back to his newspaper while dismissively saying "She'll be alright".
%%* AlphaBitch: Connie D'Amico
* BaitAndSwitch:
** Right after Peter says he has a plan to deal with the toad-licking epidemic, it cuts to a scene with him asking what Principal Shepherd thinks of the plan. Shepherd points out that Peter never said what his plan is. He just entered Shepherd's office and asked what Shepherd thought of the plan.
** At the end, when Meg is asked by two popular guys to dance, she goes to Neil asking him if he would to. He tells her he'd be honored... She then gives him her purse to hold for her while returned to hit the dance floor with one of the popular guys.
* BaitAndSwitchComment: Trope. After Peter (properly) tells Principal Shepherd his plan to stop the students from licking toads, Shepherd responds that he does not like the plan... he loves it! Though he says the latter half of the phrase through a phone call hours after Peter had already went home disappointed.
** Later when in the cafeteria Meg points out Connie and Peter remarks “So that’s Toadgirl?”. Turns out there really is a student who’s half human, half toad.
* BettyAndVeronica: Peter (as new kid Lando) gets torn between taking either the Betty Meg or the Veronica Connie to the prom.
* BigDamnHeroes: Peter falls off the roof, but he's saved by ComicBook/SpiderMan's webbing.
-->Spider-Man: Everybody gets one.
%%* BittersweetEnding
* Bowdlerize: For whatever reason, the free-to-air syndicated version of this episode censors "That's your butthole!" to merely "That's your butt!" during the "Gotta Give Up the Toad" musical number.
* BrattyTeenageDaughter: Meg. While she had a right to be upset about Lando (actually Peter) dumping her for Connie, her whining that her life was basically over crossed over into Wangst.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: When Meg and Lois talk after Peter (as Lando) dumps her for Connie:
-->Meg: Why don't I just tattoo a big "L" on my forehead while I'm at it?
-->Lois: Now, Meg, you know my feelings on tattoos.
* ComplimentBackfire: When Peter talks about his old high school crush Phoebe Diamond, then let's Lois know he's her silver medal. She does not look amused as he kisses her.
* Crossover: Lando's sneaking off to the dance is helped by ComicBook/SpiderMan.
* FunWithSubtitles: At the start of the episode, when the plane crashes, two Colombians parachute out of the plane and talk to each other in Spanish, but the subtitles are in Korean.
* HalfwayPlotSwitch: The school's toad-licking problem is dealt with by the halfway point of the episode, with the storyline then switching to being about whether "Lando" is going to go to the dance with Meg or Connie.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Peter. He attempts to improve Meg's popularity by disguising himself as a popular high school student and taking her to the dance, only to go with Connie instead, but does make it up to her in the end.
* LoveTriangle: Between Meg/Peter (Lando)/Connie.
* MediumBlending: Peter said he took drugs once, and things became too real: Cue a live-action Peter on a park bench freaking out.
* NeverFoundTheBody: The police are too lazy to follow up on this, and take Lando to be dead.
* NoodleIncident: Alluded too.
--->Lois: Don’t try and pawn this off on your sister, she’s a good girl.
--->Chris: Oh yeah, well what about that time she strangled our other sister?
--->Lois: (both she and Peter look worried) Now Chris we told you that was just a very bad dream.
--->Chris: But I remember it so-
--->Peter/Lois: (adamant) It was a dream!
* OnlySaneMan: Connie D'Amico's parents are the only people in the episode who notice that "Lando" is clearly much older than he claims to be, and is dressed more like how you'd expect a 1970s high school student to dress.
* ReplacementGoldfish: Lampshaded by Brian when Peter (in his high school disguise as Lando) chooses Connie over Meg, as she is the most popular girl in school just like how his old crush Phoebe Diamond was the most popular girl back when Peter was in high school.
* SecondPrize: After reminiscing about a girl he used to crush on in high school, Peter refers to his wife Lois as his "silver medal." Ouch.
* ShoutOut:
** The famous commercial with the boy asking the owl how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop is parodied, with the boy asking how many toad licks it takes to land in state prison: "JUST ONE."
** As Lando Griffin, Peter tries to jump-start the jukebox, Fonz-style in an effort to look cool to Connie and her friends, but breaks the glass while trying and cuts his hand. Ironically, he actually does succeed in impressing Connie, as she and her friends mistake it for a deliberate act of vandalism.
** Film/TheBreakfastClub scene with the breakfast cereal logo characters talking to each other. Complete with the infamous ending of Peter reenacting Bender walking through the football field with his fist raised and "Don't You (Forget About Me)" playing in the background.
* SleepingDummy: Peter prepares one to sneak out from under Lois' nose. When she goes to check on him, the dummy speaks to her, courtesy of a tape recording Peter made of himself responding to the comments he predicts Lois will make.
* TakeThat: While under the effects of a toad, one teen says he finally understands Series/SportsNight, saying it’s a comedy too good to be funny.
* TheTapeKnewYouWouldSayThat:
** Peter leaves a tape recording of his voice to fool Lois while he's at the dance. At first it works, but then it starts to drift off-topic. When Lois sees the tape player, the recording asks Lois to flip to Side B if she hasn't yet figured it out.
** Slide projector example with Neil. After Meg refuses to go to the dance with him, he has the projector show a slide with "why not?" written on it.
* ToadLicking:
** "Toad" becomes such a popular fad at James Woods High School, after a Colombian drug cartel's plane transporting the toads crashes near Quahog, that Peter winds up going undercover at the school as "Lando Griffin" to get the students to stop.
--->Tom Tucker: Toad-licking is also known as "lily-padding", "frenching the prince" and "doing Kermit".
** There was even a hilarious anti-drug PSA directly spoofing the classic Tootsie Pop commercial with Mr. Owl.
--->Kid: Mr. Toad, how many licks of you does it take to get to the center of a Rhode Island State Prison?\
[jail door closes]\
Voiceover: Just one.
* VisualPun: Peter walks in on a detention session featuring "Film/TheBreakfastClub." Not the 1980s actors from the movie, actual breakfast mascots (like Tony the Tiger, the Trix Rabbit, etc) in detention re-enacting the scene where Bender tells the others about how his dad gave him cigarettes for Christmas.
-->Tony: You know what I got for Christmas? It was a banner freakin' year at the Tiger house. I got a carton of cigarettes. Old man grabbed me and said, "Ey, smoke up Tony, they're GRRRRREAT!" Bastard.
* WaxingLyrical: The episode title comes from the chorus of "At the Hop" by Danny and the Juniors (1957).
