* 07th Expansion, responsible for the Franchise/WhenTheyCry series loves to have voice actors do this, especially when casting them in supposedly VoiceActor roles, only for the character's true nature to come out:
** Creator/DaisukeOno: Known for playing charming bishounen, has played Mamoru Akasaka and plays stubborn, rebellious, somewhat perverted Battler Ushiromiya.
** Creator/RieKugimiya: Famous for her tsundere little girl roles, plays kind Meido Shannon.
** Creator/SoichiroHoshi: Often cast as passive characters who snap. His role, Keiichi Maebara snaps a number of times, but is anything but passive.
** Creator/YukariTamura, who has played many happy-go-lucky little girls:
*** Rika Furude smiles a lot, says "Nii~pah!"... and is, in fact, [[spoiler: ReallySevenHundredYearsOld and prone to drinking alcohol to forget her sad fate]]. And it was AWESOME.
*** Now over the top with her role as Frederica Bernkastel, the Witch of Miracles in VisualNovel/UminekoWhenTheyCry, by virtue of her being .
** Creator/YuiHorie: Made famous by her cute (and occasionally Tsundere) roles. Although Hanyuu is very cute, she's very pessimistic. Maria Ushiromiya is also very cute, but she is also very Child.
*** She also plays against type in Manga/Pretear (as BigBad /Fenrir) and Manga/IkkiTousen (as Chuubou)
* Literature/Baccano has a number of noteworthy seiyuu playing against type. To name a few: Creator/KappeiYamaguchi (known for playing HotBlooded Idiot Heroes) is cast as ExtremeDoormat StepfordSmiler Tic Jefferson and Creator/MasakazuMorita (aka Ichigo and Tidus) plays , one of the biggest ForHiretic AGodAmI bastards known to man. The dub has Creator/JMichaelTatum, who usually voices characters that are TheStoic or at least fairly serious, playing upbeat, Cloudcuckoolander scatterbrained, and less-than intelligent Isaac.
* From Anime/CodeGeass:
** Lelouch, the manipulative AntiHero who slowly slips into AntiVillain territory, is played by Creator/JunFukuyama, an actor known for playing more straightforward heroes like Anime/Gravions Touga Tenkuji. Meanwhile Suzaku, the KnightInShiningArmor, is played by Creator/TakahiroSakurai, known for playing Anti Heroes like Cloud Strife from VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII. Reportedly this surprised even the other voice actors, who assumed that the two would be cast in the opposite roles. Director[=/=]co-creator Goro Taniguchi has said he did this on purpose, to show that Lelouch and Suzaku are both trying very hard to be something they aren't.
** The US dub got this as well, with Lelouch being played by Creator/JohnnyYongBosch, best known for being a former Franchise/s as well as Ichigo, while Suzaku is played by Creator/YuriLowenthal whom despite being known for his KidHero roles, he's also best known for playing AntiHero Sasuke Uchiha. The dub's producers remarked that Taniguchi had a hand in the casting, indicating that he pulled the stunt a second time.
* The Gundam 00 series seems to apply this trope intentionally.
** Creator/ToruFuruya, who typically play heroes like Amuro Ray, Chiba Mamoru, and Pegasus Seiya, plays Ribbons. Initially thought to be a side character, he turns out to be .
*** And one of the villains in the fourth Manga/Bleach movie, Shuuren.
** Aside from Furuya, many seiyuus of past Gundam protagonists or a Major Supporting character voiced antagonists within the series: namely, Romi Paku (Loran), Kazuki Yao (Judau), Daisuke Namikawa (Al), Tetsu Shiratori (Sai) and Keiji Fujiwara (Eledore). The English version followed suit with the casting of voice actors such as Scott [=McNeil=] as Ali Al-Saachez (Duo), Kirby Morrow as Billy (Trowa), Nicole Bouma as Nena (Meyrin), Meryke Hendrikse as Liu Mei (Lunamaria) and Michael Adamwhaite as Ribbons (Yzak).
** Possibly the biggest surprise in 00 may have been the casting of Creator/BradSwaile as Setsuna F. Seiei, despite playing Gundam protagonists in the past. Swaile was at this point best known for his emotional characters (and yes that includes Light, who while sociopathic is still rather hammy and over the top at points), and the casting of him as the nearly emotionless, traumatised Setsuna was a surprising one. It still worked out pretty well though.
** The Filipino dub also followed suit; Setsuna is voiced by the guy who voiced Ippo Makunouchi, Lockon by the guy who voiced Reito Kanzaki, H/Allelujah by the guy who voiced Youhei Sunohara, Tieria by the guy who voiced Yuuji Sakai, Liu Mei by the girl who voiced Chiyo Mihama, Sumeragi and Louise by the girl who voiced Ami Kawashima, Marina by the girl who voiced Ranpha Franboise and Feldt by the girl who voiced Winry Rockbell.
** Creator/ScottMcNeil would later play Antoine from VideoGame/DeadRising2, an insane cannibal chef who kidnaps people and cooks them alive to be made into his "special dish" so he can be famous.
* Literature/Kampfer: Most of the cast is Playing Against Type, notably Creator/KaoriNazuka as Shizuku, Creator/YukariTamura as Seppuku Kuro Usagi, Creator/NanaMizuki as Kanden Yamaneko, , Creator/YuiHorie as Akane (who’s mouth is very filthy). Subverted, however, with Ranka Lee as Kaede Sakura, [[spoiler:then double subverted as she’s the worst offender- Ranka Lee as a PsychoLesbian BigBad?]]
* In the English dub of Manga/LinebarrelsOfIron, Creator/ToddHaberkorn, who generally plays heroes or comic relief characters channels a Ribbons wannabe main villain, who is assisted by a character voiced by Creator/VicMignogna, who generally (with some exceptions, see below) gets the same kind of casting. In the other direction, Creator/JerryJewell, who often plays sinister characters, is cast as a cool NiceGuy.
* Literature/MyNextLifeAsAVillainessAllRoutesLeadToDoom:
** In the original dub, Creator/YoshitsuguMatsuoka is known for playing harem protagonists into the point of being nicknamed as "Harem King" by the fandom. In this series, he's reduced to being a member of a harem (Nicol Ascart).
** In the English dub, Creator/MelissaFahn is more commonly known for being either stoic or bitchy action girls, one of her more famous roles notwithstanding. Here, she plays Maria Campbell, who is sweet, nice, and as traditionally feminine as can be.
* In Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion:
** Music/MegumiHayashibara was chosen to play Rei Ayanami, who became the archetypical EmotionlessGirl. At the time, Hayashibara had become famous for her portrayals of Bokukko, Genki Girls, and generally outspoken characters -- basically characters like Asuka Langley Soryuu, Rei’s sort-of love rival for protagonist Shinji.
** This is also the case in the English dub where Creator/AmandaWinnLee, more known for playing hyperactive Rio in the Anime/BurnUp series, filled the part of Rei.
** Additionally Creator/KotonoMitsuishi as BrokenAce Misato Katsuragi. Her most famous role until then? DumbBlonde IdiotHero Usagi from Anime/SailorMoon.
** Interviews from the Rebuild 2.0 Complete Records indicate that the makers deliberately cast voice actors whose voice and image would conflict with the characters, which is why they continued the tradition by having Creator/MaayaSakamoto play the very eccentric BloodKnight Mari Makinami.
* Anime/PokemonTheSeries:
** CreepyChild psychic Gym Leader Natsume/Sabrina is played by Creator/KaeAraki, a.k.a. Chibi-Usa in the Japanese version, and by Creator/LisaOrtiz (Lina Inverse) in the English version.
*** Ortiz was also Mars. Yes, Mars. A stoic, threatening commander trying to help with the main villain's goal of trying to create a new world by destroying the Earth.
** Creator/DanGreen voices....Ash's Treecko. That's right, a foot-tall grass gecko. Actually a double subversion if you pay attention to Treecko's characterization.
** Creator/IkueOtani voices cute characters like Pikachu, but in the disturbing VisualNovel/CorpseParty, she's [[spoiler:BigBad Sachiko, a murderous spirit]].

* Creator/KaeAraki plays more often than not Moe Genki Girls. Then we get to the already mentioned Natsume/Sabrina, and DarkMagicalGirl Ai Shinozaki...
* Creator/NobutoshiCanna is known for voicing Blood Knights, HotBlooded characters, scheming villains with the occasional BruceLeeClone. But one would never suspect that he would voice the Adorkable NiceGuy Nowaki Kusama of Manga/JunjouRomantica and yes, he's the Seme in his pairing.
* Even Creator/ShigeruChiba, who’s pretty much always been known for voicing loud and comedic characters, hot-blooded types, villains, and large hams voices a character who doesn’t fit into any of those categories: The quiet and kind Butler of Literature/Overlord2012, Sebas Tian.
** He’s also done some notable live action work, where he’s played two surprisingly more serious lead roles: The anti-hero Kōichi Todome from Film/TheRedSpectacles, and the solemn director, “I” from Film/TalkingHead.
* Creator/SusumuChiba tends to be associated with calm bishonens like Castor from Manga/ZeroSevenGhost and Sai from Manga/HikaruNoGo. Yet he also plays middle-aged gorilla WithACrush Kondo Isao in Manga/Gintama. Seriously.
* Creator/YukoGoto is most known for her cute-and-vulnerable moe-roles like Mikuru Asahina. She is really a down-to-asphalt motorcycle-devotee and actually voiced her own caricature, the hyper-masculine Yakuza-styled Gotouther-sama, in Manga/LuckyStar.
** She later played Madoka's mother Junko who is little bit a masculine wife and a HardDrinkingPartyGirl. Junko acts often as Madoka's bro. This role is closer to Goto's real life personality (besides the aforementioned caricature) than most of her other roles.
* Creator/KanaHanazawa often voices timid and shy girls like Nadeko Sengoku, Anri Sonohara, Shiori Shiomiya. Then she did violent, LargeHam Ichiko Sakura from Manga/GoodLuckGirl!
** In 2014, she took a step further when she voiced Rize Kamishiro and Seryu Ubiquitous, both villainous, psychotic and cruel characters who were the total opposite of the characters that Hanazawa usually voices.
** There is also Iris Heart, a super sadistic goddess of a Dominatrix in a Stripperific outfit who also has a thing for DoubleEntendre.
* Creator/ShowHayami is mostly known to voice characters who appear good but in fact they are evil sociopaths that love playing with people's minds and torturing them like Aizen in Manga/Bleach. Yet, he also voices characters completely different from his normal type like Ichiya or Umibozu in Manga/Gintama. Or if you want a CrazyIsCool example, there's Klein Sandman.
** The most jarring example, however, has got to be a minor role he got in Anime/GearFighterDendoh where he plays Ginga's overly flamboyant father who's EXTREMELY PRONE of broken English. In fact, flamboyant doesn't even begin to describe this character (though only for 1 episode, and Hayami also voiced the BigBad, who's more in-line of his type)
* Creator/NorikoHidaka, whose most famous role is Akane from Manga/RanmaOneHalf, voiced StepfordSmiler Soujirou Seta from Manga/RurouniKenshin.
* Creator/YokoHikasa, who is known for voicing sexy and badass women such as Rias Gremory and Laura Matsuda made a jump into this trope as Yoh Asakura, who's not only a male shonen hero but is so lazy that the only motivation for his goals is so that he won't have to do anything else.
* Creator/YokoSoumi's roles usually tend to be deep-voiced, sexy women, usually with large breasts or in positions of command/fighting, or the Yamato Nadeshiko. But in Anime/ShimaShimaToraNoShimajiro, she plays the frail elderly goat Granny Mei, who does has a temper but is otherwise far detached from her usual typecast.
* Creator/SatoshiHino back in the day used to be the second fiddle or non action guys like Yuji Sakai, Saito, or Shuuyu Koukin. Come present day, he's diversified his roles like Yuuto Jerkass Kannagi, Kamui, Ryo Mogami, Riken Yoshinokazura as well as the titular overlord Ainz Ooal Gown, to the point he's barely even recognizable.
* Creator/SoichiroHoshi: Like above, the man does generally passive characters who... Umm, yeah. You don't make angry, or get in the way. Kira Yamato happens to one of the more famous ones of this type. Along side to this is Lio Shirazumi, a homicidal, Knife welding, cannibalistic, Bastard, ering maniac.
** Actually Kira Yamato was PlayingAgainstType for him, before then he was known for playing generally hot-blooded and short tempered characters, Soichiro Nagi, Kazama the Shell Bullet and Yuki Aiba were par for the course before SEED.
* Creator/YuiOgura has been typecast for playing cute Token Mini Moes. In Manga/BlackClover, she voices the battle-hungry, psychotic blood mage Vanica Zogratis.
** She was also cast as the tomboyish, reserved, delinquent-like BrokenBird Homare in Anime/HugttoPrettyCure, and the voice she uses for her is significantly lower pitched than her usual fare.
* Creator/NobuyukiHiyama is one of the kings of HotBlooded.
** He broke type when playing the sensitive, responsible and almost fatherly Shiro Amada from the Gundam 08th MS Team.
** As well as the genocidal psychopath Muruta Azrael from Gundam SEED.
** He also voices [[spoiler:Girl chessmaster Wilhelm]] from VideoGame/Xenosaga. If you listen carefully, he sounds vaguely like a really calm Viral.
* Creator/MitsuhiroIchiki is noted by this wiki to "play teenage boys, often leaning heavily towards the JerkAss spectrum." In Literature/TanteiTeamKZJikenNote, he plays Kozuka, the local Adorkable guy and the guyest of the Detective Team's boys. This stands out in a cast which also includes the KidHero, TheSocialExpert, and the StoicSpectacles.
* Creator/JunyaIkeda who known for his roles as Gai Ikari of Series/KaizokuSentaiGokaiger and Joe Kidou of Anime/DigimonAdventureTri plays as the eerie SoftSpokenSadist MisanthropeSupreme Millions Knives of Anime/TrigunStampede.
* Creator/KikukoInoue is well known for her YamatoNadeshiko characters like Belldandy, Kasumi Tendou, and Shuuko Suzuhara. However, she also has many instances where she breaks the mold.
** I-No... is anything but kind. She's a mega bitch.
** Her performance as gorgeous exhibitionist high school teacher Yoshimine Mitsuka in Manga/DearS, who likes to strip down to her lingerie in front of her students and, at least in the manga version, openly stated that it turned her on to know that teenagers were checking out her body. In fact, she nearly seemed to be having an orgasm when she said that...
** The Boss. Though in this case [[spoiler: she really is a good mother and mentor... she just can't show it]].
** MS IGLOO 2's Shinigami lady.
** And [[spoiler:Grace O'Connor]] from Anime/MacrossFrontier.
** Louise's older sister Eleonore is even more cruel than Louise -- and without the gentle/affectionate moments.
** Also Palm Siberia, who's... not right in the head to say the least.
** One of the earliest examples of hers: Panther of Anime/SaberMarionetteJ.
** And even earlier than that, Princess Vespa in the Japanese dub of Film/Spaceballs.
** The arrogant and sociopathic Alv from Anime/KiddyGrade and Lobelia Carlini from VideoGame/SakuraWars are also her doing.
** Lust in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
** Akira Yoshii, Akihisa's CoolBigSis yet has a bro-con tendency in Literature/BakaAndTestSummonTheBeasts.
** Insarn, the sexy EvilGenius in Series/KaizokuSentaiGokaiger.
** And among all of these ladies... there's a boy. His name is Tsubasa Ohzora, and she voices him from age 12 to 15.
** Mizuho Kazama was many things, but YamatoNadeshiko was not one of them.
** She also played the Yandere Dominatrix Queen in Anime/MiyukiChanInWonderland.
** Played with for Ryoki, who is normally very sweet, kind, polite and motherly, which does fit her usual roles... unless someone touches her halo, causing her to switch to a violent, bitter, utterly foul-mouthed personality, which doesn't fit her usual roles.
* Creator/MikiIto was originally this, playing FemmeFatale roles, until she did the switch-pigeonhole as a result of Playing Against Type.
%%** Case in point: Taiga Fujimura, Asa Shigure.
** And then there's Miyo Takano, who happens to be .
%%** Also portrayed by her role as Sachiko Ogasawara.
* Creator/YuukiKaji has both played Shu and Issei in the same season. One is a brooding, angsty guy who is forced to become king, and the other one is a lecherous hotblooded kid who wishes to become the ultimate pawn. You try listening one then go to another. It's pretty amazing that he has two protagonist roles which are polar opposites of each other.
** Then comes the next season where he plays Haruyuki, the resident Gonk and subject to lots of bullying almost everyday in Literature/AccelWorld. Personality-wise, he believes he is but trash in the real world and often locks himself up in a virtual world.
** And then there's Eren Yeager. The PlayingAgainstType was so big that it became a MemeticMutation (at least in the West).
** He even becomes the BigBad with a really deep voice known as Lord Silver Mask.
** Also TheSociopath known as Q-Vier in Anime/ValvraveTheLiberator.
* Creator/GakutoKajiwara's most famous roles are typically HotBlooded Stock Shonen Heroes, such as Asta and Shinra Kusakabe, but in Manga/KomiCantCommunicate, he plays a much down-to-earth and calmer Hitohito Tadano.
* Creator/AkiraKamiya, a man who is the archetype of HotBlooded voice acting:
** He's gone on to voice loony mad scientist Dr. Tomoe from Anime/SailorMoon.
** He also dubbed Iago from Franchise/Aladdin (The original movie, the sequels, the TV series and in Franchise/KingdomHearts). Sadly, he retired Iago in 2001 and he is now voiced by Creator/ToruOkawa.
** Additionally, he also lent his Manga/Kinnikuman voice to Mr. Beetle in the Japanese dub of Don Bluth's WesternAnimation/1994.
** This Kenshiro seiyuu also voiced Shun Mitaka in Creator/RumikoTakahashi's most romantic series Manga/MaisonIkkoku. Yes.
** AND Shutaro Mendou (Manga/UruseiYatsura[='=]s version of Mitaka), and Kazamatsuri from Manga/YawaraAFashionableJudoGirl (a RomanticFalseLead again), not to mention Ryo from Manga/CityHunter. He did a LOT of romantic rivals/sex maniacs. Some fans think the action hero bit was just a sidelight (he was also Kinnikuman, but no one brings that up)...
** Let's not forget that he was also the first voice of Kogoro Mouri, the egotistical JerkAss detective wannabe.
** There's also his turn as the pint-sized psychopath Garlic Jr. in the first DBZ film. Sadly, he didn't reprise his role for the series, with Creator/ShigeruChiba taking over there.
* Creator/HiroshiKamiya was best known for voicing straightforward heroes such as Koyomi Araragi, Tieria Erde, and Takashi Natsume. Then came Izaya Orihara. By now, ManipulativeBastard has been established as his second pigeonhole.
* Creator/MasamiKikuchi is one of the few who do this in the same franchise.
** Let's see which characters he played in the Franchise/Digimon series: TheSoCalledCoward Jou, FillerVillain Demon, TheProfessor [[Anime/DigimonTamers Rob [=McCoy=] aka Dolphin]], Cloudcuckoolander Neemon... KURATA?!
** Franchise/Digimon was not the first time Kikuchi played against type BIG time. He was Kouji's JerkAss older brother Akihiko in the Bronze OAV.
** In VideoGame/TalesOfRebirth, he voiced Saleh, who can be summarized as an utter sadist.
** And then there's Manga/ThePrinceOfTennis, where he's the very hammy and vain Wakato.
* Creator/JurotaKosugi, known for usually voicing villains, plays Asuma Sarutobi in Manga/Naruto and its sequel Naruto Shippuden.
* Creator/RieKugimiya, who is commonly known for her Tsundere characters including the "Four Tsundere Wonders" Shana, Louise, Nagi, and Taiga, is often pigeonholed into these types of roles. This just makes the exceptions stand out all the more.
** In the aforementioned Gundam 00, there's the cute and non-Tsundere Nena Moe Trinity... [[spoiler:until she grabs a gun.]]
** Another case is from Manga/Bleach. Nemu Kurotsuchi is really melancholic and shy and spends her time being abused from hell and back by Mayuri Kurotsuchi... and she won't even dare to protest because he made her that way. And she's not a little girl.
--->Mayuri: "Very good, Nemu, just smother him with those. Worst case is, he dies happy."
** And there's also cute little Lichtenstein and the male ShrinkingViolet (and potential Yandere) Latvia from Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowers. Well, maybe not completely...
** She was also the upbeat Rise from VideoGame/Persona4. Hell, there's even a comic out there referencing this trope...
** She also plays Natsu's partner Happy in Manga/FairyTail. Interestingly enough, Happy becomes smitten with Wendy's partner Charle, who happens to be a tsundere...
** Mizore Shirayuki is a ShrinkingViolet StalkerWithACrush. She's not busty, but she's far from a pint-sized pettanko. Then again, she wears ZettaiRyouiki.
** She also played Alphonse Elric and Ikuto Noguchi. Also from Fullmetal Alchemist Catherine Elle Armstrong.
** A special case is that of Yua Sakurai, who has some of Rie's more famous characters' physical traits (long wavy hair, short stature), but is actually quite a nice girl.
** She's also voiced EmotionlessBoy Miharu Rokujou, which is definitely a huge contrast to some other roles she's played.
** Her first male role was the sweet Kaname (also known as Taiki) in Literature/TheTwelveKingdoms. So yeah, that was her first pigeonholing, and then jumped into another...
** Replacing the late Creator/TomokoKawakami as Miu Furinji in Manga/KenichiTheMightiestDisciple. Very well-endowed and can kick ass, plus she's a NiceGirl rather than a JerkWithAHeartOfGold.
** She played a PreciousPuppy in Chocotan!
* Creator/MegumiMatsumoto, pigeonholed for many years as the cute young boy, voiced Meganekko GenkiGirl Suzuri in Manga/RideBack.
* Creator/YoshitsuguMatsuoka has been criticized for being pigeonholed into generic Harem protagonist roles such as Kirito, and while he has had other roles that have avoided this trend, such as Freed Sellzen, the true example here is Betelgeuse Romanee-Conti, in spades! It's easily his most insane role ever, and has been near universally praised as the very role that changed many peoples minds about him as a voice actor. And later an immensely HotBlooded swordsman called Inosuke Hashibiara who's nothing like the above roles.
* Creator/KentaMiyake as Genma in Anime/DarkerThanBlack is a lot like the Nena Trinity example mentioned above, where [[spoiler:the actor plays a character who on the surface seems like their typical role (in this case, tall, deep-voiced BigGuy characters), but is revealed to be insane and evil]].
* Creator/MamoruMiyano normally plays Bishounen type characters with boyish voices, but in VisualNovel/SteinsGate, he played Okabe Rintaro who is far from bishounen and is deep-voiced.
** Also, he tends to voice faaaaaaabulous Bishonen such as Tamaki Suoh. Setsuna F. Seiei might be a Bishonen but he is the exact opposite of the two above.
** And then there's Shuu Tsukimiya.
* Creator/ToshiyukiMorikawa almost always voices imposing characters, ranging from demon exterminators to downright creepy ones. However, in addition to voicing a protagonist's father (in Manga/Bleach, where he also voices a villain as well as Manga/Naruto), he's also the voice of Spider-Man himself in the Japanese dub of WesternAnimation/SpiderManTheAnimatedSeries.
** He was also the original voice of Katsuya Jonouchi (Joey Wheeler to U.S. fans). Yes, that Jonouchi.
* Not that Creator/HitomiNabatame never did a GenkiGirl like Mana/Cure Heart, but her most known portfolio is mostly about CoolBigSis, HardDrinkingPartyGirl, mature women, or lesbians.
** Although, considering the heavy subtext of the Precure franchise, you could say the last one MIGHT be a lil' spot on for Nabatame... In fact, the presence of Nabatame turns this particular Precure into 'the most Les Yay-ridden Precure series ever' and the first Precure that got a Ho Yay page on its own!
** Her debut role, Yuuna from Literature/Maburaho is a cute, housewife-like RoseHairedSweetie with a high-pitched voice... who also happens to be a ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend.
** Nabatame also played Mei Mei from Manga/NagasareteAirantou who is a TokenMinimoe plus a ShrinkingViolet.
* Creator/MaiNakahara, who is known for cheery and sweet-faced Moe Action Girls as Mai Tokiha and Teana Lanstar, voiced the villainous HotWitch Valerie from VideoGame/LuminousArc3.
* Creator/KazuyaNakai is the voice actor for when it comes to badass swordsmen, such as Zoro, Toshiro Hijikata, Date Masamune, Mugen...and then there's Kokuto, who is also a swordsman, but is dangerously unstable and way too eager to shed some blood.
** The crazed and foul-mouthed Jan Valentine from Manga/Hellsing.
** Also gaunt and very eccentric Hiro/Hyoro
** And there's TheStoic and ComicallySerious, Shizuka Doumeki of Manga/XxxHolic.
* Creator/YuuichiNakamura usually has roles where the jerks have a golden heart but thanks to his role as Hazama/Terumi, he can finally be a full-blown Jerkass.
** Long before that there was his role as Dinosaur Ryuzaki in Anime/YuGiOh.
* Creator/RyuseiNakao in the past sometimes does more than the screechy voiced sadistic, mostly villainous men he's known for (and very UN-like his NiceGuy RealLife behavior). In Anime/GoLion, he played as the SacrificialLamb (but still heroic) Shirogane (Anime/Voltron fans will recognize him as Sven), and in Anime/Moomin1990 he played the ButtMonkey comic relief character Sniff.
** He seems to do this often when he dubs Western Animation; he usually he plays the hero or comic relief sidekick. Examples include Yakko Warner from WesternAnimation/Animaniacs, Buster Bunny from WesternAnimation/TinyToonAdventures, Bartok from WesternAnimation/Anastasia, Jon Arbuckle from WesternAnimation/GarfieldAndFriends, Heathcliff from WesternAnimation/HeathcliffAndTheCatillacCats, and both Droopy and his son Drippy.
* Creator/DaisukeNamikawa ought to get a mention too. He can voice literally anyone with his diverse tonal range. Contrast characters such as Fai and the Italy brothers with Ulquiorra!
* Creator/AiNonaka usually does cutesy and nice characters. Kyouko Sakura in Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica is definitely not one of them. And neither is Eimi/Emilia in VideoGame/BlazeUnion.
* Creator/MamikoNoto, known for having a naturally soft voice, tends to play cute characters, such as Yukino Kikukawa, Angol Mois, and Kotomi Ichinose.
** She then went on to play Masane Amaha, the ActionMom from Anime/Witchblade.
** Add to that her roles in Anime/Monster,
** There is also the slow talking, deep voiced, SexyMentor Shigure from Manga/KenichiTheMightiestDisciple.
** Or VideoGame/EndlessFrontiers Suzuka. Watch the meek and demure Creator/MamikoNoto let out a shrilling NoblewomansLaugh! OOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHO!!
** And the LovableAlphaBitch Lilicia Toudou in Literature/StudentCouncilsDiscretion.
** And BrokenBird Satellizer from Manga/Freezing.
** And Kosuda-kun's CoolBigSis in Manga/BGataHKei.
** Don't forget Oichi from VideoGame/SengokuBasara, who is demure and cries a lot but goddamn terrifying the rest of the time.
** She plays Aoi Mutou in Manga/Moyashimon, who is quite the HardDrinkingPartyGirl, isn't afraid to get dirty, and is not soft-voiced at all.
** She voices the Child, EmotionlessGirl Ai Enma in Anime/HellGirl.
** Don't forget her role as Asagami Fujino in Literature/TheGardenOfSinners. MAGAREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
** Let us not forget her role as AbusiveParent Saki Arima.
* Creator/MegumiOgata is known for her deep and abrasive voice that leads her to mostly play young boys, such as Shinji Ikari, and tough ActionGirl types, like Sailor Uranus or even Lara Croft before Creator/AtsukoTanaka took the role.
** But she is also the one to play Delinquent Kunio Murai's mom in Manga/GreatTeacherOnizuka, the very feminine and sexy Julia Murai...who is also a construction worker.
** The true against type for her is Princess Emeraude from Manga/MagicKnightRayearth, who is tiny, willowy, super feminine and NOT EVEN TOUGH. That is, until . The show, however, also has a more in-type role for Megumi Ogata, though: Bishonen Eagle Vision.
* Creator/NobuhikoOkamoto usually plays loudmouthed and HotBlooded characters such as the likes of Katsuki Bakugou. Shin-ah is the exact opposite.
* Creator/RyuzaburoOtomo manages to play against type while playing a character within his type! In Anime/DragonBallZ, he voices Dabura, a sinister devil under the control of Babidi. When he is killed by Majin Buu, however, his soul is deemed too evil to be punished in Hell, so his punishment is to be sent to Heaven, where he suddenly becomes a FriendToAllLivingThings, which everyone close to him finds creepy.
* Creator/AriOzawa usually plays TheCutie of that cast, being typecast by her StarMakingRole, Chiyo of Manga/MonthlyGirlsNozakiKun. In Manga/MagicOfStella she plays Ayame, the closest this series gives for a Tomboy.
* Creator/YoshikoSakakibara usually plays mother and scientist roles as well as TheBaroness, such as Haman Karn, And then she played Rosemariné of Manga/KazeToKiNoUta, a Bishonen-type LongHairedPrettyBoy.
* Creator/SatomiSato is mostly known for playing demure girly girls. Ironically, she gained a huge amount of recognition as the tomboy Ritsu from Manga/KOn.
* While Creator/TomokazuSeki simply plays too many roles to be a true PigeonholedVoiceActor, he nonetheless usually finds himself playing either HotBlooded or Stoic badasses like Akira Fudo, Domon Kasshu, Beyond the Grave, Anime Tenchou, Sousuke Sagara, Gai Daigouji, and...Manga/Gravitations Uke Shuichi?
* Creator/KaoriShimizu was formerly known for her deep, sometimes deadpan voice but mostly tough voices that is suited for SugarAndIcePersonality Action Girls (Case in point: Signum).
** VideoGame/TalesOfHearts gives her the role of Richia Spodune, a... uh... really soft-spoken, feminine MysteriousWaif.
** And then you have Fangirl Hiyori Tamura from Manga/LuckyStar. Double whoa.
* Creator/HiroShimono usually voices characters who can be a bit artsy such as Ayato Kamina. Keima Katsuragi is anything but that.
** He's also often cast as bright and happy-go-lucky boys so it's downright surprising to find out that he also voices the villainous Dabi.
* Creator/KenichiSuzumura is mostly known to play characters that are HotBlooded like Shinn from Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEEDDestiny or DeadpanSnarker like Okita from Manga/Gintama or Ayumu from Manga/Spiral. He also plays transsexual Ginshu in Manga/Amatsuki, and the childish (and often whiny) Maya in AudioPlay/SaintBeast.
* Creator/ChiakiTakahashi usually plays characters who are kind hearted, and if the character experiences a FaceHeelTurn or does something morally ambiguous, the character usually retains some sympathy to make her an AntiVillain. Except in Franchise/Neptunia, whereas her character Majiquonne/Arfoire is not only the BigBad, she's also intentionally designed to be unsympathetic, and her motivation overall seems close to GenericDoomsdayVillain.
* Creator/HideyukiTanaka: Ever since TheSeventies, he's been known for playing team dads and nice guys. His role in Manga/OnePiece? A cruel, hammy, manipulative, bitter and arrogant MagnificentBastard known as Donquixote Doflamingo.
* Creator/RieTanaka usually provides voices for peaceful, meek and/or strait-laced heroines like Chii from Manga/Chobits, Lacus Clyne and Meer Campbell from the Gundam SEED verse, and Yomi from Manga/AzumangaDaioh...but she was also the voice behind at least three devious/brutal villains: Suigintou from Anime/RozenMaiden, from Anime/MyOtome, and Liang Qi from Anime/Canaan.
%%** And then there's Morganna Mode Gone from Anime/DotHackSign...
** She also plays the straight-laced husky-voiced Mitsuru Kirijo from VideoGame/Persona3.
** Played with in VideoGame/FateExtras sequel Fate/EXTRA CCC, where she plays the soft voiced Buddhist nun Sessyoin Kiara, until it's revealed that Her clothing, and in turn her voice, get progressively lewder in all of her appearances so far.
* Creator/KeiTomiyama was known best for voicing the heroic Susumu Kodai in Anime/SpaceBattleshipYamato. He also voiced Tochiro Oyama in several Leijiverse titles as well as Yang Wenli in Literature/LegendOfTheGalacticHeroes. He also was Takashi Kasuga aka Kyosuke's dad in Manga/KimagureOrangeRoad. All of these are intelligent, kindly, competent, yet vulnerable characters. Suprisingly, he voiced the AxCrazy Inspector Percy in the Anime/RidingBean OVA. His character is essentially Inspector Zenigata on crack.
* Creator/NaoTouyama is best known for voicing boisterous and outgoing GenkiGirl[=s=] who oftentimes pepper their sentences with GratuitousEnglish, such as Karen Kujo, Chitoge Kirisaki, and the Kongou and Takao Sisters. Then, there is the soft-spoken and reserved Reina Prowler, a character who contrasts so much with her previous roles one may very well be surprised she received a Singing Award for her performance as said character during the 15th Seiyuu Awards. There's also Lelei la Lalena, another introverted character very similar in demeanor to Reina who sometimes wears a hazmat suit and gas mask to reflect how cautious she is, and to a lesser extent High Elf Archer, who acts far more serious compared to her other, more comedic roles.
* Creator/ToshiyukiToyonaga, who voiced many Adorkable characters such as Mikado Ryuugamine, Shun Matsuoka and Yuuri Katsuki currently voices Mahiro Fuwa, the AxCrazy, JerkAss AntiHero of Manga/BlastOfTempest. The amount of dramatic yelling in a suddenly rough, husky voice is very shocking.
* Creator/KenjiUtsumi often is the go-guy for voicing rather big characters, yet in the Red Ribbon Army saga of Manga/DragonBall, he voices the leader of the eponymous villainous army, Commander Red... who is a complete midget. Still met up with the other standard of being a Military dictator, though.
** And let's not forget about his role as Gimli in the Japanese dub of Film/TheLordOfTheRings movies.
* Creator/NorioWakamoto is best known for a long string of villain and/or badass roles.
** Then there's Manga/AzumangaDaioh, where he played... a cat. Okay, it's Chiyo-Dad, so it's not completely out there, but still... a freaking cat! He also played the cute MentorMascot, Flappy, who has a really high-pitched voice, and the TeamPet Teddie in VideoGame/Persona4.
** Who can forget the melon-loving, v-shaped demon from Manga/ZatchBell, the almighty Victoreem-sama? VERY MERON!!!
** It was just as weird when he played a dog statue in Yoshinaga Chi No Gargoyle.
** He also played the LemonyNarrator of Manga/HayateTheCombatButler; a voice job not only totally at odds with his usual hard tone, but also so oily that it can melt butter from a range of thirty feet.
%%** Onsokumaru from Manga/NinjaNonsense.
** One of his first roles was Master, a kindly bartender in the very, very romantic Anime/MaisonIkkoku series.
** He played the gender-flipped Chousen in VisualNovel/KoihimeMusou, whose Macho Campness seems to be lifted straight from VideoGame/ChoAniki.
* Creator/KappeiYamaguchi: The Japanese voice actor for Ranma, Usopp, and Manga/Inuyasha also tends to be VoiceActor into hotheaded hero roles. And then there's L who is nothing like those three.
** Yamaguchi also plays Tobia Arronax, possibly one of the cleverest Gundam protagonists ever (though he does have his HotBlooded moments).
** Feitan is the short, but creepy, dark clothed Genei Ryodan member with a quiet voice and is a torture specialist and he beheads almost every enemy he fights with his hands.
** He also played Forever, a pervy gorilla who's also extremely psychotic, and Shigechi who's immensely greedy, but highly intelligent.

%%* Creator/RobertAxelrod, best known as Franchise/PowerRangerss Lord Zedd and MadScientist Finster, played BadassAdorable AntiHero[=/=]AntiVillain Wizardmon.
* Creator/ChrisAyres normally played deep-voiced characters who are either antagonists, or in the supporting cast who are in middle-age, so it's surprising to see that in Manga/Gantz he played Kei Kurono, who's not only a young-teenager-like character, he's also the main character.
* Creator/GregAyres is known for playing innocent young boys or fun loving teenagers, but he has played vastly different characters at least twice. First, in Manga/FullmetalAlchemist, he voiced Bido, a former human-turned-lizard chimera who is a con artist and trouble maker. And in Manga/Gantz, he voices Hajimeh w Muroto, a psychotic teenage serial killer and rapist.
** He's Tsujido in Anime/SpeedGrapher, who is a quiet and calm Dragon to the BigBad.
** He's also Guldo on Anime/DragonballZKai.
** In both Anime/SamuraiSeven and Anime/Nightraid1931, he voices characters who initially seem to fit his fun-loving, easy going type, but are revealed to have StepfordSmiler traits and are actually less nice/more melancholic than you'd expect.
** A similar case comes in the "Mountain Villa" 2-parter in Manga/CaseClosed, where he voices an Adorkable geeky big guy.
** He was also Monokuma in the Anime/DanganronpaTheAnimation, the sadistic KillerTeddyBear who oversees the DeadlyGame.
* Creator/LauraBailey seems to voice a lot of cute, generally innocent teenage girls (such as Keiko/Kayko Yukimura from Manga/YuYuHakusho, Tohru Honda from Manga/FruitsBasket, Marta in VideoGame/TalesOfSymphoniaDawnOfTheNewWorld.)
** But then she also voices Lust in Manga/FullmetalAlchemist!
** Don't forget Tia Harribel.
** She's also young Chi-Chi in Manga/DragonBall. Between Lust, Harribel, and Young Chi-Chi's Stripperiffic wardrobe, Fanservice we're sensing a pattern with her characters' designs despite the characters' personalities being completely different.
%%** And then there's VideoGame/Bloodrayne...
** She comes back in her against type mode in VideoGame/DissidiaFinalFantasy, being the Cloud of Darkness.
** She's also the American equivalent of Creator/MamikoNoto for the aforementioned Oichi.
%%** Shin Nohara.
%%*** Another -- Warrant Officer Schrodinger.
%%* Creator/TroyBaker: Did you know that he played the DifficultButAwesome, eccentric but highly powerful Excalibur from Manga/SoulEater?
* Creator/SteveBlum tends to be cast as impossibly cool leading men like Spike Spiegel.
** Many people were surprised to hear him in Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann as the extremely CampGay Leeron. It should be noted that his range is far from limited.
** See also: Dr. Ludger Brink from the 1995 Lucas Arts videogame, VideoGame/1995, or his appearance in WesternAnimation/HarveyBirdmanAttorneyAtLaw as... WesternAnimation/YakkyDoodle.
** In VideoGame/LegoBatman, there are plenty of characters that are his type, like Batman, The Joker, Two-Face, Killer Croc... except Killer Moth, who's possibly the biggest loser in Gotham, and Blum voiced him too.
*** His role as Killer Croc really shined in VideoGame/BatmanArkhamAsylum.
** The Green Goblin in WesternAnimation/TheSpectacularSpiderMan and Orochimaru from Manga/Naruto are both higher-pitched madmen compared to his normal deep voice.
** He accomplished a similar feat to fellow Franchise/Digimon VA Masami Kikuchi. Hell, Anime/DigimonTamers has 3 of his ranges in there -- badass Yamaki, young boy Kenta, and RidiculouslyCuteCritter Guilmon!
** Blum has also voiced children (J.P.) and small creatures (Blunk).
** In Anime/GhostInTheShellStandAloneComplex, Blum voices Aoi, a sensitive and soft-spoken intellectual .
** And, of course, there is Orochimaru in Naruto. He's not exactly known for playing slimy scheming parasites.
** There's also his role as Dr. Nebraska, a high-pitched evil mad scientist in episode 5 of Manga/Trigun.
* Creator/JohnnyYongBosch: The Franchise/PowerRangers alumnus has had several roles that could be considered playing against type.
** Shortly after being cast as Lelouch, Bosch would go on to play Rossiu from Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann, another WellIntentionedExtremist who comes into opposition with the protagonist.
** He went further against type in VideoGame/Persona4, where he plays Tohru Adachi, an incompetent ButtMonkey of a police detective, which is a far cry from his usual heroic roles. [[spoiler:This becomes even more apparent when it turns out that not only is Adachi the killer, he's AxCrazy to boot.]]
** While being cast as Izaya Orihara could also be considered Playing Against Type, Johnny's basically established "evil, slimy, and/or manipulative bastard" as his secondary type at this point.
** Bosch also has a second secondary type other than playing slimy anti-heroes/villains: the soft spoken/whiny young boys. There are Renton and Claus among quite a few others.
** And by Literature/FateZero, he plays the sociopathicRyuunosuke who loves to see people dying in brutal ways.
** He also plays the sadistic, borderline Yandere Saruhiko Fushimi in Anime/ProjectK.
** His first not-so-good-guy role is thought to have been Clair Leonelli from Anime/HeatGuyJ.
** His first antagonistic role was Reiji Takegawa, the BigBad in VideoGame/Gatekeepers.
** Manga/YonaOfTheDawn has him playing the BigBad's father. A middle-aged man mind you, which is way different from pretty much most of his roles.
* Despite her wide vocal range, Creator/LuciChristian people were still quite surprised when they found out that she portrayed AxCrazy BloodKnight Ophelia in Manga/Claymore.
** Not to mention the psychotic Medusa from Manga/SoulEater and the equally nuts Alois Trancy from Manga/BlackButler.
** And there's God the Truth from Manga/FullmetalAlchemist, who's many ricksterMentorhings, but not bratty or insane.
* Creator/ColleenClinkenbeard is known for playing Femme Fatales and sultry women. So it came as a surprise when she was cast as idiot Shonen hero Monkey D. Luffy. It ended up working so well that she was cast as Gohan in Anime/DragonBallZKai.
* Partial example: Creator/RichardIanCox is usually cast in the role of hotheadeds like Manga/OneHalf and Anime/InuYasha, but was cast as the generally calm Allelujah Haptism. However, he was in-type for Allelujah's SuperpoweredEvilSide.
** He also played the cowardly helicopter pilot in the live-action movie Film/GhostRider2007.
%%* Creator/MelissaFahn is mostly known for voicing Gaz and Rika Nonaka, which they share the same personality. Too bad Kristy Damon opposes them by personality.
%%** Or even Rosita Aries, an energetic and free-spirited PluckyGirl TagalongKid.
* Creator/SandyFox normally voices TokenMiniMoe roles due to her high pitched, little girl-sounding voice. But when Chibi-Usa briefly undergoes a PlotRelevantAgeUp and gets brainwashed and becomes Black Lady near the end of the second season of Manga/SailorMoon, Sandy actually lowers her voice to accommodate Chibi-Usa's physical change into an older teen.
* Creator/CrispinFreeman is known for mostly playing badass MrFanservice Anti-Heroes like Alucard, Itachi, and Alex Rowe. But...
** He also starred in Manga/Chobits as dweeby loser Hideki.
** He's also Fire Leo from the VideoGame/ViewtifulJoe cartoon. That's a pretty big difference from Alucard, Itachi, or most of his characters.
** And then there's Kyon, the GenericGuy, TokenHuman[=/=]TheTeamNormal, and OnlySaneMan among the SOS Brigade.
** Freeman's stereotyped as a badass because he was played against type. His first popular major role was Justy Ueki Tylor, played against when he was given the role of Zelgadis of Anime/Slayers.
** His role in the video game VideoGame/JusticeLeagueHeroes is freaking Franchise/Superman, a far cry from the psychos he usually voices. In said performance, he does a reasonable impression of Creator/GeorgeNewbern, who voiced Superman in WesternAnimation/JusticeLeague.
* Marlowe Gardiner-Heslin, a former Canadian voice actor from Toronto, has voiced minors in children's animation, but his voice role in the English dub of the Interlude OVA is mature and different than his previous roles.
* Creator/KellenGoff is often typecast as either AxCrazy villains like Rekka Hoshimiya, Overhaul and Diavolo or monsters like Funtime Freddy and the Father Spider Demon, and has expressed wanting to expand his repertoire beyond those archetypes. Later, he would go on to play Senpai, his first main character and a ClassicalAntiHero StalkerWithACrush, and the EndearinglyDorky NiceGuy Sasaki.
* Creator/ToddHaberkorn, generally plays HotBlooded heroes or comic relief characters, but...
** while they are both the main characters of their series like most of his notable Funimation roles, Naru and Haruka are vastly different from his typical hot-blooded and/or outgoing roles.
** ever since he moved to Los Angeles, he has been often typecasted into villains such as Sugou Nobuyuki, Judar and Betelgeuse.
* Creator/MarykeHendrikse is known for playing Genki Girls and the shy type, but in Manga/BlackLagoon she plays Revy, the angry, violent, foul mouthed SociopathicHero progaonist.
* Creator/JerryJewell is known for his sinister or PrettyBoy roles. However, he plays a bat named Nazo "Kou" Koumori in Manga/RosarioPlusVampire who pops up during random intervals to fill the audience in on information, and who also happens to be . However, in one later episode it is revealed that Kou .
* Creator/AllesandroJulliani: The actor who played L in the English dub of Manga/DeathNote had previously mainly voice acted as the Prince Charming equivalents in the Franchise/Barbie movies. This is really playing against the type when you consider that L is said to be socially awkward and has no luck in romantic areas. Not that L really cares.
* Creator/YuriLowenthal traditionally voices the KidHero. Ironically enough, his StarMakingRole in Manga/Naruto was as AntiHero-turned-villain Sasuke. Not to mention his role as the Jerkass OmnicidalManiac with ClusterFBomb Gig in VideoGame/SoulNomadAndTheWorldEaters, which is considered one of the best video game dubs ever. There's also his role as the lead in Manga/GirlsBravo, where he voices a ShrinkingViolet who doubles as TheChewToy.
* Creator/MonaMarshall, the voice of so many young boys? Turn on the dub of Anime/CarriedByTheWindTsukikageRan. The voice of Ran, a twenty-something female bishojo ronin? That's her.
** She also voiced another girl character, Leni, in Anime/SakuraWarsTheMovie.
** She also voiced high pitched RidiculouslyCuteCritter Terriermon in Anime/DigimonTamers.
* Creator/VicMignogna's casting as Broly is very jarring. Not surprisingly, WebVideo/DragonballZAbridged took aim at how...vocal he is at not liking to do the ScreamingWarrior.
** The above wouldn't the last time he played someone more than a little AxCrazy.
%%** This list could go on forever, but his portrayal of Akechi Mitsuhide in the anime of VideoGame/SengokuBasara was so disturbing that it has to be mentioned.
** His role as Mamoru in Anime/RahXephon is also against type. The character initially seems to be a JerkWithAHeartOfGold BromanticFoil, .
** For that matter, he also played Rome Ro in Anime/HeroicAge, who is not only the closest thing the series has to a BigBad, but is very quiet and pensive.
%%** And let's not forget Vic also voices Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowerss Greece!
** Vic Mignogna voices E-123 Omega in VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog, a 1200-pound robot AntiHero who will do whatever it takes to kill Dr. Eggman. He's more difficult to recognize as Omega than most of his other roles.
** Speaking of One Piece, there's also his role as the weaselly JerkAss that is Nezumi from the Arlong arc. His role as on the other hand is more in line with his usual characters.
* Creator/KirbyMorrow is typically the Ocean Group's go-to guy for dashing young heroes in both anime and western animation such as Miroku from Anime/Inuyasha, Ryo Takatsuki in Manga/ProjectARMS, Trowa Barton from Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing, Cyclops/Scott Summers in WesternAnimation/XMenEvolution, and Ken of fame.
** However he joins fellow voice actor Creator/BradSwaile in playing against type in Manga/DeathNote, where he voices KnightTemplar turned mass murderer, heDragoneru Mikami. He's also voiced Gyunei Gus, Char Aznable's AxCrazy right hand man in Anime/MobileSuitGundamCharsCounterattack, and the cynical Raimi Mathews in WebAnimation/BrokenSaints.
* Creator/LiamOBrien is known for voicing characters that are evil, crazy, or anti-heroic. However, he plays the very heroic Dr. Tenma from Manga/Monster.
* Creator/LisaOrtiz, as mentioned before, usually voices cheery upbeat characters like Lina Inverse, Amy Rose, and Chisa Tsukamoto:
** But in addition to the aforementioned Sabrina and Mars, she was also Lala-Ru from Anime/NowAndThenHereAndThere, and if you hear her voice as Kaku Bunwa, you won't recognize it's her.
** She also voiced Shiori, a quiet, stoic, .
* Creator/JoshuaSeth usually voiced innocent kids, heroic teenagers, or goofy little characters, he was also Tetsuo from Anime/Akira a depressed teenage biker gang member with low self esteem who slowly goes insane after developing telekinetic powers and eventually goes on a murderous rampage.
** He also played the main antagonist Knives as a child from Anime/Trigun who systematically kills off the people who raised him after developing a hatred of humans.
* Creator/StephanieSheh usually plays shy, quiet girls such as Hinata Hyuga, , and Mikuru Asahina. But she also plays Akira Kogami, Kin Tsuchi, and Kaguya Sumeragi.
%%** According to her, Audrey Burne.
** She's also played some downright badass and/or villainous roles as of late, such as Kriem from Anime/TigerAndBunny, and the Rin sisters from VideoGame/AnarchyReigns.
** She also did the voice clips for Kjelle in VideoGame/FireEmblemAwakening, who is far from shy, and is a confident, training-loving knight.
** [[spoiler:Aww, Airy]] from VideoGame/BravelyDefault .
** She also plays the infamous cute psychopath Nui Harime in Anime/KillLaKill.
** Then there's her role as the broken, unhinged, suicidal Suito Kusanagi in the film Anime/TheSkyCrawlers.
* Creator/IanSinclair, is known for playing soft spoken, loud or friendly voices, but in Manga/Toriko plays Toriko with a deep voice that is large as he is.
* Creator/SteveStaley, best known for voicing JerkAss and/or cynical characters like Neji Hyuga, Toshiro Hitsugaya, and Kadaj, plays NiceGuy Banagher Links.
* Creator/SonnyStrait generally voices happy-go-lucky, comic-relief-with-a-hint-of-badass guys. But then he also voices Kyuzo, who's TheStoic if there ever was one.
%%** He's also Bardock, the father of Goku, in Dragon Ball Z.
** Then there's his role as Doctor on Manga/YuYuHakusho, a creepy AxeCrazy SoftSpokenSadist during the Chapter Black arc.
* Creator/KarenStrassman usually employs a tremendous amount of feminine grace in her characters, heroines and villainesses alike. But in Manga/Hellsing Ultimate, she voiced Heinkel Wolfe and she sounded quite butch.
* Creator/BradSwaile was usually cast as awkward and/or dorky characters, usually teenagers. Then comes the Manga/DeathNote dub, and he plays MagnificentBastard main character Light Yagami. This totally works and is generally considered to be his best performance ever.
** Plus, Swaile usually plays lead characters, like the afore-mentioned Light Yagami, but in Literature/ShakuganNoShana, he was Keisaku Sato, a minor character.
** He was also "Slappy" from VideoGame/DeadRising2 a giggling delusional lunatic who believed himself to actually be the mascot he was portraying in costume while wielding a pair of flame throwers spraying them in random directions.
** As of later chapters/episodes, Rock from Manga/BlackLagoon, who went from the sort of dorky character he was known for playing to a far more serious and violent character changed by his time and experiences in Roanapur.
%%** Jin Kazama from VideoGame/StreetFighterXTekken also qualifies.
* Creator/JMichaelTatum, often voices stoic characters (often as the TheSmartGuy with glasses) like Kyoya and Sebastian. However, he also voices Dororo from Anime/SgtFrog, whom despite appearing to be stoic at first, is also a wimpy ButtMonkey.
* Creator/JulieAnnTaylor is known for her portrayal of CoolBigSis characters like Milly, Ratchet, and even Ayaka. Then there's Mikan, who is a kid.
%%** Karol, also.
** And not to mention Severa, Cordelia's future Jerkass daughter.

* Creator/RossyAguirre is best known for voicing either HotBlooded and aggressive Bokukko tomboyish girls or young male kids. Akane Tendo definitely fits the first mold, but her other most iconic anime role, Ami Mizuno, is the complete opposite by being soft-spoken and feminine.
* The late Creator/JesusBarrero, at least during the 80s and 90s, had most of his notable anime roles being young, heroic HotBlooded characters, ranging from NiceGuy to JerkWithAHeartOfGold, such as Pegasus Seiya, Rick Hunter and Kouji Kabuto. So it's rather jarring to hear him as the voice of Dekim Barton in Anime/MobileSuitGundamWingEndlessWaltz.
* Creator/CristinaHernandez is best known in the Latin American anime fandom for playing cute and sweet girls like Sakura Kinomoto and Kari Kamiya. She also voiced Tayuya in Manga/Naruto.
