Go To

As can be seen by the lengthy list, OrphanedSeries are a common problem for webcomics. Below is a list of some of the more noteworthy examples:
----
[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:Serial Offenders]]
* Pretty much every comic on subscription-site [=WirePop=] eventually fell into this while the service was online from 2003 to 2012. While the site billed itself as a creator-owned service to entice subscribers and promised regular updates that presumably free comics couldn’t offer, almost immediately artists stopped updating and comics dropped like flies. The staff running the site admitted the artists weren’t being compensated well enough to incentivize them to stay with the service. Originally promising a launch of 20 new webcomics, only 17 launched initially. During the entire lifespan of the service, a grand total of ''three'' comics did not end up being dropped entirely (''Xamra'', ''Realms Of Ishikaze'', and ''Lunargyros''). It's easier to count the aversions than list them all, but the most notable dropped series include:
** ''Automatic'' was a mecha series that fumbled without ever reaching its stated premise before the author, Hai, got a publishing deal with Seven Seas Entertainment and took the comic down entirely. Ironically, this book deal led to another abandoned series for Hai, ''Blade for Barter,'', though in this case it was due to poor sales of the first volume and the publisher at least printed the end to the one and only storyline of the series.
** ''Cat Boy // Mouse Girl'' was another launch title that suffered from one false start, got a reboot, then suddenly slipped into a comedy side story, then left the site for its own webspace where it never updated any further. Another title by the same author, ''Fallen Moon'', suffered from constant ScheduleSlip before finally dropping off the face of the earth as well.
** The aforementioned ''Directions of Destiny'', which left after a short period of updates. The author released a few updates of a Wirepop-exclusive series before never updating again and finally canceling that as well.
** ''Eversummer Eve'' was a series that had been running for a few years before Wirepop got the series archive along with new updates. As a prominent comic at the time, it was used to promote Wirepop's launch. It updated rather faithfully for a few years until it suddenly stopped updates altogether. Eventually, even the archives departed quietly in 2008. The site for the comic bore an update of 2008 claiming the series would not continue until either a reboot or remake while the author pursued more lucrative endeavors. In mid-2011, even that site went down and what was left of the comic vanished with it. [[https://www.deviantart.com/denisesjones The author stated on]] Platform/DeviantArt that while that particular iteration of the comic isn't coming back (in part due to the old domain being taken by someone else), she hopes to revive it under a different name.
** ''Fantasy Realms'' was a series that started off of the site, then relaunched as a [=WirePop=] title, then moved back off the site. A promised [=WirePop=] exclusive series never materialized. Off the site, the comic has not been updated since February of 2008 and the site since June of 2008, mentioning that the comic is continuing in its state of indefinite hiatus. This was after ''multiple'' false starts and extreme ScheduleSlip.
** ''[=NightSilver=]'' was a launch series by Svetlana Chmakova that ran for about a year of steady updates when the author picked up a publishing deal from {{Creator/Tokyopop}} to write ''{{Manga/Dramacon}}''. ''[=NightSilver=]'' slipped further and further before finally quietly disappearing from the site in its entirety. The series was never finished.
** Eisu, artist of ''Webcomic/MarryMeBobbyCrosby'', ''Webcomic/NoPinkPonies,'' and the long completed ''Maid Attack'', briefly ran a [=WirePop=] series titled ''Webcomic/RumbleFall'' that didn't get out of the initial introductions of the cast before dying.
** One of the launch titles only did ''one update'' before getting quietly cancelled.
* Pick anything by Creator/DavidGonterman. Half of his stuff, he just posts one full "chapter" and loses interest. The other half just gets randomly dropped. This is probably for the best.
** Most of his stories just meld into each other, then the original is forgotten about. You could say they're all part of one horrible Gonterverse.
* RK Milholland (of ''Webcomic/SomethingPositive'' fame) has three, all spinoffs of his main comic. They are, in chronological order: [[http://www.newgolddreams.com/ New Gold Dreams]], [[http://www.midnightmacabre.com Midnight Macabre]], and [[http://www.classicallypositive.com Something Positive 1937-38]]. All have been revived at least once.
** Milholland's non-''[[Webcomic/SomethingPositive S*P]]'' comic ''Super Stupor'' has also succumbed to this.
* Several of Brian Carroll's comics have suffered from this. His main comic, ''[[http://www.instantclassic.net/ Instant Classic]]'', has stopped and restarted several times, as has its "sister comic", ''[[http://www.genrezvouspoint.com Genrezvous Point]]''. Carroll's ''[[http://www.instantclassic.net/story.php?comicID=101 Pirates]]'' comic, however, is one of his more extreme examples. Unlike the first two, which both ''had'' been properly finished before the author decided to pick them up again, ''Pirates'' never makes it through its first story arc. After its initial abandonment, Carroll rebooted the strip into a completely different (and somewhat controversial) format, which lasted all of three strips before it was abandoned again. Carroll is also a full-time filmmaker, and when his comics end up on hiatus it usually has to do with his involvement on film shoots or projects.
* Happens fairly often with ''VideoGame/TheSims2'' {{machinomic}}s. This is usually because their computer crashed and they lost all their characters and they didn't have a back up (and even if they do it's a large amount of work to reload everything). Or, they may have just lost inspiration.
* The forums on Webcomic/MSPaintAdventures hosted many [[InteractiveComic forum adventures]] that would usually end up being abandoned, with very few ever being completed. The fall of the forums destroyed a lot of such adventures, while others continued on other forums.
* Arist Irony-Chan had two comics start and stop after ''Webcomic/GetMedieval'' concluded - ''Webcomic/DumnestorsHeroes'' and ''Webcomic/KnowledgeIsPower''. After those comics fizzled out, Irony-Chan found her groove again with the non-comedic ''Webcomic/TheInterstellarTeaHouse''... Which has been on hiatus since July 2013.
* Several webcomics by the prolific writer Creator/TCampbell have ended earlier than planned, for one reason or another. ''Search Engine Funnies'' and ''Sketchies'' ended because the respective artists left on short notice and Campbell was unable to find a replacement. He ended ''The Versus Verses'', ''Exploding Stills'' and ''Widgetitis'' due to lack of readers (in the first two cases, at least, their highly experimental nature played a part). In contrast, ''Webcomic/{{QUILTBAG}}'', as a ''Webcomic/PennyAndAggie'' SpinOff, had both a relatively large readership and an artist who's worked reliably with Campbell for years on other series; however, Campbell stopped it after the second of the planned eight chapters due to dissatisfaction with the comic's overall concept and progress.
** His several other concluded webcomics are ''not'' examples of this trope, as they've been either planned from the start as short-run projects with a definite end point (''Webcomic/RipAndTeri'', ''Webcomic/{{Webmasters}}'') or long-running series with a GrandFinale (''Webcomic/CoolCatStudio,'' ''Webcomic/PennyAndAggie'', ''Webcomic/{{Fans}}'' [[[{{Revival}} twice]]]).
* ''[[http://www.webcomicsnation.com/prankster/ Phantasmic Tales]]'' - Adam Prosser's comics collective on Webcomics Nation. Four comics - all stopped with promises of short hiatuses.
** ''[[http://www.webcomicsnation.com/prankster/lemuria/series.php Lemuria]]'', a series about a BigBeautifulWoman barbarian/thief and her semi-voluntary magic-user sidekick, hasn't updated since December 2012.
** ''[[http://www.webcomicsnation.com/prankster/Freak/ Freak. U.]]'', about a fraternity full of magic users, cyborgs and other assorted paranormals, hasn't updated since June 2011.
** ''[[http://www.webcomicsnation.com/prankster/Shift/ Night Shift]]'', about a night watchman at a museum full of living exhibits, hasn't updated since June 2009.
** ''[[http://www.webcomicsnation.com/prankster/Ally/ Critterville]]'', a FunnyAnimal comic in the vein of Creator/CarlBarks' WesternAnimation/DonaldDuck comics, hasn't updated since March 2006.
* As of February 2014, Creator/RalphHayesJr put the kibosh on all his webcomics that weren't ''Webcomic/TalesOfTheQuestor'', ''Webcomic/QuentynQuinnSpaceRanger'' or ''Webcomic/NipAndTuck''. ''Webcomic/GoblinHollow'' can be argued to have something of a proper ending, with the birth of Ben and Lily's son. The rest - not so much.
* Creator/StephCherrywell has a rather bad habit of abandoning their comics without a clear conclusion. ''Muertitos'' and ''Webcomic/{{Intragalactic}}'' sort of petered out, while ''Webcomic/GorgeousPrincessCreamyBeamy'' ends with a climactic scene that nevertheless looks like it should have gotten at least one more page.
* Comics hosted on ''[[http://petitesymphony.com Petite Symphony]]'' are prone to being abandoned or having long hiatuses. As of July 2014 out of about 20 projects only ''Djandora'' and new ''Chimaera High'' update regularly, plus ''Project Zero'' moved to another site. ''Generation 17'' was officially dropped by author in 2014, other comics just stopped updating in 2013 or earlier. Which is a shame, since the site's comics are of above-average quality and feature interesting long storylines. It's as if comics come to this site to die.
** In November 2014 the same crew launched a new site ''[[http://comicsbreak.com/ Comics Break]]'', trying to "move away from being a simple comic site and allow us to become a community built around comics". As of 2022 there's 1 active comic: ''Webcomic/TheLegendOfLucy''.[[note]]''Chimaera High'' stopped in 2016; ''Djandora'' stopped in 2017, when the author decided to reboot it, erased the archives, and disappeared.[[/note]]
* [[http://carlos-the-g.deviantart.com Carlos G.]] simply stopped working on no less than four webcomics: ''The Smashing Adventures of The Bottomleys'' (once available for download, now no more), ''[[http://lowroad75.comicgenesis.com/ Giselle]]'', ''[[http://leth.smackjeeves.com/comics/1122262/chapter-1-page-1/ Leth Hate]]'' and ''[[http://cottontail.smackjeeves.com/comics/1939860/page-1-liar/ Cottontail]]''. Now he's working on a comic called ''[[http://tapastic.com/series/PetSuccubus My Pet Succubus]]''. This one has lasted longer but he has teetered on just stopping it outright a few times.
* [[https://pensandtales.com/ Pens and Tales]] was once host to a handful of comics, but one by one they entered indefinite hiatuses[[note]]''[[http://evilish.pensandtales.com/ Evilish]]''[='=] last news saying "Keep an eye out, I'm going to start updating again soon." in 2008[[/note]] or were outright cancelled. Eventually some subdomains even collapsed, taking ''Those Destined'' offline. In the end, only ''Fortissima's Treasure Hunters'' and ''Webcomic/FireflyCross'' survived thanks to having alternate hosts; with the former limping along from one extended hiatus to another, and the latter running to completion.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Titles #-A]]
* ''[[http://www.9thelsewhere.com/ 9th Elsewhere]]''. Updating ground to a halt for a while, restarted at half-strips once a week, ground to a halt again; the author posted a long rant about her [=IRL=] issues, and then promised huge news "on Thursday". Thursday, at the time of this entry (September 28, 2009) was almost 16 months ago. See also [[http://www.manatheater.com/ Secret of Mana Theater]] by her (ex?)boyfriend, which suffered a similar update breakdown (around the same time, probably-not-coincidentally), seemed to promise a comeback, and is now languishing on an archived version of the site from 2002...
** Update: As of 2010, the books ordered in 2007 are finally arriving.
* ''Webcomic/AbstractGender'', oh ''Abstract Gender''. The webcomic went through four, count em, four artists before the artist well dried up completely. Webcomic died. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xnV7fuxnz8&feature=related But wait, there's more!]] The writer then went on to producing scripts that continued the story. [[http://rayneshikama.deviantart.com/gallery/ All collected right here.]] They didn't last too long either.
* ''Webcomic/{{Academia}}'' started in September 2012 and stopped updating May 2013 after just twenty seven pages with no explanation. Nothing has been posted since.
* ''Absurd Notions'', which has been orphaned and resurrected repeatedly.
* ''Acid Reflux'' was a comic that ran for a couple years and built up a decent following until the author put it on indefinite hiatus due to needing to rearrange her life. This notice was the last thing she posted and the domain that was hosting the comic eventually expired, being consumed by one of the many vulture domain stealers.
** It has been made available by fans (Google for it) and the the few unfinished scripted strips have been drawn and published by a fan artist.
** [[http://acidreflux.ficwad.com/ Here we go.]] First strip [[http://acidreflux.ficwad.com/view.php?date=1999-10-15 here]], as the last one is a bit of a spoiler.
* ''Webcomic/AerialMagic'' was put on infinite hiatus because Creator/{{walkingnorth}} couldn't continue the story in a way that she felt the characters deserved. She confirmed [[https://www.webtoons.com/en/creator/walkingnorth/posts/500-b9v8v-kwb here]] in July 2023 that she has no plans to return to it at this time.
* ''[[Webcomic/SpellingTheVacuum The Adventures of Spelling the Vacuum]]''
* ''Aether'' was a fantasy comic with a growing fanbase and reputation that came to an abrupt end in the middle of the strip's first real plot arc. The artist had never intended the comic to have lasted as long as it did, and had no real plans for the story or characters. The comic was originally intended to practice SequentialArt for another project. Thus Aether was ended before it became too convoluted. The website has gone and squatters are in place.
* ''Webcomic/AetheriaEpics'' stopped updating someday, and ended up vanishing around November 2013.
* ''A Lesson Is Learned But The Damage Is Irreversible''
* ''Webcomic/AllNewIssues'' was put on hiatus in April 2014. It was said to be returning by September 2015, but that never came to fruition and the website domain has since expired.
* ''Webcomic/AlphaShade'', after getting through two books worth of comics, suddenly ground to a halt and has not seen an update since 2010. It doesn't help that the Brudlos' attempt to start up their own company, Alpha Shade Inc., basically tanked and they had to spend the majority of their time taking on contracts to make ends meet. The artist is still committed to the comic and is considering making a spinoff. However, he can't continue the main comic without the writer, who essentially lost interest in the project.
* ''[[http://altermeta.net/ Altermeta]]'' would seem to be the posterboy for this trope, complete with revival and another slipping of schedule. It was rebooted in August 2009 and continued until 2015.
* ''WebComic/{{Alternate}}'', created by Nozmo, never got a proper conclusion and remains unfinished to this day. Her next major work, ''Tidd Allison and the Petunia Violet'', almost met the same fate after Nozmo vanished from the net for a while before resuming it in 2018.
* ''Amazing Superteam'', after a hilarious first book, started into the dreaded ScheduleSlip, and has now simply stopped.
* ''Webcomic/AndThatsHowEquestriaWasMade'' started in July 2011 and stopped updating July 2016 with no explanation. Nothing has been posted since.
* ''Webcomic/ApeNotMonkey'' has not updated since January 2015 and the comic's website is no longer working.
* ''[[http://www.arduffle.com Arduffle]]'' started on February 7, 2011, and ended June 28, 2012, with the creator announcing that he was taking a long break from the strip.
* ''WebComic/{{Amazoness}}'', a cute webcomic about Amazons and their slaves, went through a series of erratic updates, and then stopped entirely.
** Last update: February 2010 and the bit of the logo that says "Updated Mondays & Fridays" was always aspirational.
** The author of the series, Creator/XanthippeHutcheon, has since gone on to do two currently-updating webcomics, ''Webcomic/ThinkingTooMuchToThinkPositively'' (2017-present) and ''Webcomic/PandorasTale'' (2019-present).
* ''Webcomic/AnsemRetort'' ended mid-season eight. Unlike most examples, Duke was always upfront that the comic was just something he was doing on his own time with no long term storyline or plans to make a living off of it and that he would just stop when he felt it wasn't fun anymore.
* ''Arcane Times'' goes so long (several months) between updates, it could practically be said to invoke this trope with each individual page.
* ''[[http://asheron.fanyart.com/ Asheron]]'' hasn't updated past its beginnings for a long time due to several of the author's personal difficulties and decisions regarding the comic. The author plans on continuing the comic at some point. The author now works on ''Dragon Heroes''.
* ''[[http://www.askdreldritch.com/comic.html Ask Dr. Eldrich]]'' hasn't been updated since December 2011.
* ''Webcomic/{{Avalon|1999}}'' is perhaps the most notorious case within webcomics. The series was tremendously popular; but as real life concerns overtook Josh Phillips' writing and artwork, the schedule began slipping for weeks and later months at a time. Eventually, he called it quits, posting a written outline of the series ending in the forums, and announcing that he would be starting a different series (''Two Eighty''), which ended after four updates.
* ''Webcomic/TheAwakened'' has already gone through one full reboot plus numerous hiatuses and gaps in updates and hasn't been updated since February 2016. The author has gone on record in June 2018 saying that their choices are now to either reboot it ''again'' from scratch as they are in such a different place in their life now than when they started the comic (angsty teenager vs well adjusted mid thirties adult) they don't feel capable of continuing it in the current format or consigning it to history unfinished and starting a new project.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Titles B-D]]
* ''Webcomic/BardQuest'' from ''Webcomic/MSPaintAdventures'' was abandoned after only a few dozen pages when the branching storylines became too confusing and complicated to bother with. ''Webcomic/JailBreak'' was also orphaned for a few years, but finally got a (hasty one-page) ending during the break before ''Webcomic/{{Homestuck}}'''s end of act 5 flash.
* ''The Bare Pit'', a SliceOfLife comic set in a New Zealand nudist colony hasn't updated since 2011 - a combination of lack of inspiration for the comic, real-life demands, and the artist's commitment to ''Webcomic/{{Magellan}}''.
* ''Webcomic/BeardyBastards'' has not been updated since May 2019.
* ''Webcomic/BedlamGenesis'' has been on hiatus since April 2018.
* ''Webcomic/BendersAndBrawlers'' is one of the Platform/TheDuck comics that hasn't returned from the Aug. 2013 server crash.
* ''Webcomic/BestFriendsForever'': The series officially stopped updating in August of 2016, as the author seemed to simply grow tired of it. No plans were made to finish the story or wrap up loose plot threads, but the series is still available to be read.
* ''Webcomic/BeyondReality'' has dropped off the Internet entirely, with its domain-name now expired.
* ''Webcomic/{{Bibliography}}'' stopped updating one day and eventually the whole website disappeared, soon scavenged by advertisers.
* ''[[http://blacktapestries.comicgenesis.com/ Black Tapestries]]'' ran from July of 2002 to August of 2007, briefly returned in February of 2008, then stopped for good. The forum remained somewhat active, and the author still hosted another roleplay-oriented site. In 2012 the comic was rebooted on [[http://blacktapestries.com/ its own site]], but only 3 pages were posted in 6 months. In winter of 2014 the author decided to [[UnCancelled continue the original incarnation]] despite inconsistencies that kept accumulating as explained [[http://blacktapestries.comicgenesis.com/d/20140210.html here]]. This lasted two months before being abandoned again. As of May 2020 the author's other comic, ''The Realm of Kaerwyn'', is updating at a steady pace.
* ''Webcomic/BlankIt'' went on hiatus in 2012. It managed 2 more pages in 2015 then nothing. The author started a Platform/{{Tumblr}} comic called Kaleiope but that got four pages and a bit of background info before turning into a random doodles blog.
* ''Webcomic/HashtagBlessed'' - no updates since July 2019 though there is a note saying it will return.
* ''Webcomic/{{Blip}}'' has been in limbo since the 25th of July 2012 and disappeared in April 2014.
* ''Blue Circus'' seems to have died. Originally updated twice a week, but it hasn't been updated since December 2011.
* ''Webcomic/BlueYonder'' hasn't updated since December 2013.
* Arguably, the hand-drawn version of ''Webcomic/BobAndGeorge''; the writer kept returning to the ''VideoGame/MegaMan''-based SpriteComic he'd done as FillerStrips, and finally said "my drawings sucks, screw it" and just imported the hand-drawn storyline into the sprites.
** This is the sad fate of 99% of just about all the fancomics by readers on the ''Webcomic/BobAndGeorge'' forums. Of literally thousands of comics that have popped up since B&G began in 2001, you could count on both hands all the ones that came to an actual conclusion rather than petering out. The number of ones that are still ongoing is only slightly larger.
* ''TheBrokenMirror'' was, by all means, a slow-moving piece. The promised "twice-weekly" updates dropped to twice-weekly after a while and somewhere into the fourth chapter, the webcomic just stopped.
* ''WebComic/BrokenPlotDevice'' stopped abruptly in 2012 after the artist's troubles in personal life. She stated that the site will remain for the time being, but she will not update it anymore as she moves on to other projects.
** As of summer 2013 the possibility of uncancellation [[http://lizzie-bean.com/home/2013/7/22/returning-to-comics-with-your-help appeared]]. The artist's need for money may outweigh her desire to leave this part of her life behind.
* ''Webcomic/BrotherSwan'' has not updated since January 2017. The creator seems to be concentrating on the animated web series ''WebAnimation/NoEvil'' set in the same continuity instead.
* ''WebComic/BrunoTheBandit'' stopped in October 2009 in the middle of a storyline. Creator Ian [=McDonald=] attributes it partly to health problems, but mostly because [[MoneyDearBoy he wasn't able to make a good enough living at it]].
* The author of ''Webcomic/BusterWildeWeerwolf'' stopped in the year 2000 and no longer works on the comic and does not want others taking over the comic.
* ''[[https://caldaje.com/ Caldaje]]'' is an experimental webcomic made together by two Italian comic book/webcomic artists, Creator/{{Zerocalcare}} and Giacomo "Keison" Bevilacqua. The idea was that each one would draw a chapter, then the other one would "answer" with the following chapter and so on. It began in June 2018 but stopped updating after the third chapter was uploaded on August of that year.
* ''Webcomic/{{Candi}}'' has been on hiatus since July 2016. Starline Hodges stated she was burned out on it and wanted to try new projects. She didn't rule out a return someday.
* For the first ''Webcomic/CatNine''. The storyline stopped just after the beginning of the episode.
* ''[[http://www.krakowstudios.com/charlie/ Charliehorse]]'' was Krakow Studios' ongoing webcomic project before ''Webcomic/{{Spinnerette}},'' but after ''Webcomic/{{Krakow}}'' and ''Webcomic/{{Marilith}}''. Put on hiatus then officially declared dead, due to a combination of concentrating on ''Spinnerette'' and considering ''Charliehorse'' not very good - with the occasional inspired strip.
* ''Webcomic/CheapThrills'' suffered from ScheduleSlip and ArtistDisillusionment throughout 2012, then ceased updating after December 2012. [[http://rigsbyusa.tumblr.com/post/50078623194/if-you-were-wondering A blog post by creator/artist S. E. Case in May of 2013 confirming her extended hiatus]] was followed by a clean withdrawal from public life. S. E. [[https://rigsbywi.tumblr.com/post/175291680919/honestly-how-have-you-been-its-been-so-long-and has since re-emerged]] with a ContinuityReboot of the comic as ''[[https://rigsbywi.com/ Rigsby, WI]]''.
* ''Webcomic/ChugworthAcademy'' updated nicely for several years, then slipped several times, and vanished for several months. Then it suddenly reappeared, posted about four new strips claiming to be starting over again picking up a few months later, and then updates stopped for good.
* ''Webcomic/CityOfReality'' hasn't updated since late 2009 and the website has since lapsed. [[WordOfGod Creator Ian Samson]] [[https://www.deviantart.com/tran4of3/journal/On-City-of-Reality-638209977 has stated]] that he hasn't had the will to rebuild and update the site and restart after the original went offline.
* ''Webcomic/TheCobraDays'', a Metal Gear Solid 3 comic following the QuirkyMinibossSquad of the game, slipped majorly at one point. After over 11 months without a single update it was officially cancelled. However, the author posted a link to a video serving as the series finale on her Platform/DeviantArt page, so she at least wrapped up the story that was already in progress when she last updated.
* ''Webcomic/CobwebAndStripes'', a fan comic of the ''Film/{{Beetlejuice}}'' franchise, was canceled by the artist in May 2020.
* ''Webcomic/ComingUpViolet'' hasn't updated since 2012. And that was coming off an [[UnCancelled Un-Cancellation]] little more than a year previous.
* The fan-made sequel to ''Webcomic/{{Concerned}}'' (which itself was properly concluded), ''[[http://aconcernedrip-off.webs.com/ Concerned 2: A Concerned Ripoff]]'', completely stopped updating in late 2010.
* ''Webcomic/CoolCatStudio'' fell into this, though it was revived and given a proper ending in September of 2008.
* ''Cosmobear'' was a project by Clay Yount while he was still initially working on ''Webcomic/RobAndElliot''. Due to the commitment required for two strips, he even dropped ''Webcomic/RobAndElliot'' down to one day a week to manage both strips. However, ''Cosmobear'' rather quickly fell into a non-updating hole in which weeks and months would go between strips. An update in June 2008 promised "Updates next Friday" for ''years'', before the site was quietly killed and the comic vanished. All the while, ''Webcomic/RobAndElliot'' became a victim of ScheduleSlip before it actually got a simple conclusion.
* ''Webcomic/CountYourSheep'' hasn't updated since December 2011. It got a few more updates in early 2015, before stopping again.
* ''Crimson Latex'' was cancelled after thirty six strips, but the author later returned with Webcomic/{{Collar 6}} as a SpiritualSuccessor, bringing in a number of the same characters but rebooting continuity.
* ''Webcomic/CritMiss'' published forty pages between April and August 2012 but then stopped updating.
* The 2007 ''Webcomic/CrossoverWars'' event had the Limbo of Lost Webcomics, which is where OrphanedSeries that were no longer on the web went.
* ''Webcomic/TheDailyBlink'' went on hiatus in June 2013 and the official website went offline in 2016 or 2017.
* ''[[http://www.webcomicsnation.com/adamcuerden/daftsod/series.php Dangerous and Fluffy: The Sheep of Doom]]'', after losing its second artist, was unable to continue. The author would like to continue it someday, but is far too slow of an artist at present to draw it himself. For that matter, there's a couple months of strips that aren't uploaded at the new archive.
* ''Dela The Hooda'' never had a regular update schedule, but has now lost its homepage after months of inactivity. The comic still updates ''very'' sporadically on Style Wager's [[http://us.vclart.net/vcl/Artists/Style-Wager/ VCL gallery]].
* ''Webcomic/DemonAid'' had a build up of the better part of a year as the author wound down her previous series, ''Webcomic/RedString''. It was unceremoniously cancelled at the end of its first chapter, barely six months into its run. The author had originally announced plans to put it into a once-a-week back burner project while spinning up another series instead, so the announcement of it actually ending in its entirety, which came on its final update, took its readership by surprise.
* ''Webcomic/DemonseedRedux'': The comic hasn't recieved updates since Dec 7th 2019 despite the notice that more is coming. After a year of silence, the comics' homepage and Patreon was taken down, abruptly ending the story on a {{Cliffhanger}} at Page 124.
* ''Discordia'' hasn't been updated since 2007.
* ''Webcomic/DontNameIt'' was cancelled after just beginning its third chapter due to the creator losing interest in not only the project, but the entire ''WebComic/{{Homestuck}}'' fandom as well.
* ''[[Webcomic/DoubleK DOUBLE K]]'' quietly slipped further and further from its set schedule, and basically stopped updating in 2013. This was accompanied by the author gradually deleting his online presence, starting with his online store, then the comic's site on Platform/SmackJeeves, then his {{Platform/Tumblr}} and [[Platform/TwitterX Twitter]] accounts, and then finally, after a long period of inactivity, the mirror of his comic on his Platform/DeviantArt account. Though that doesn't mean the comic can't be found anymore, as the comic's surprisingly large readerbase had already created several pdf files of the comic as well as an Imgur mirror which you can find a link to in the comic's works page.
* ''Dreamwalk Journal'' (NSFW) went on hiatus in 2007, officially due to writer Kishma Danielle suffering a back injury, but shows no sign of ever resuming.
** Update: The original ''Dreamwalk Journal'' site went offline, but not before Kline and Danielle began a series of spinoff stories, eventually titled ''Nightshade the Merry Widow''. Danielle sadly passed in 2014, but the comic continued. The original series was subsequently rehomed, eventually continued with a new co-writer, and tied in to the rebooted version. As of late 2016 the powers that be still appear to be under the impression that ''Nightshade's'' sexual content render it unsafe for a Website/TVTropes article.
* ''Webcomic/DungeonCrawlInc'' has put up a "On Hiatus" sign, though there never was a very steady schedule.
* Another UnCancelled example is ''Webcomic/DungeonsAndDenizens'', which was on hiatus for more than a year, with just a few forum posts as indications of life. Then the series returned and kept a fairly regular schedule for a while, before Real Life again interfered and the updates schedule became ''very'' irregular. The comic ended, AndTheAdventureContinues style, in 2014.

[[folder:Titles E-K]]
* ''Webcomic/EdmundFinneysQuestToFindTheMeaningOfLife'' stopped updating in June 2014, the author citing work and other issues for updates becoming recently sporadic, but no new content has been forthcoming since then.
* ''Webcomic/ElleAndAllTheOthers'' spontaneously ceased updating in May 2009, apparently due to the writer's personal issues and the artist's new job.
* ''Webcomic/ElfLife''. Disillusionment over failed attempts to make it pay has probably been a factor. Also, Carson Fire did always appear to have problems in keeping the story on course and completing story arcs.
* A rare UnCanceled example: ''Webcomic/ElfOnlyInn'' went on seemingly permanent hiatus as of August 2004, but reappeared in September 2006 (with the setting moved from chatroom roleplay to an {{MMORPG}}) and had been steadily updating three times per week ever since. Since June 2007, updates have become very erratic and hasn't updated since May 2008.
* ''Webcomic/{{Enjuhneer}}'' was put on hiatus in March 2014, pretty much canceled in July on the same year, and its domain expired in July 2016.
* ''Webcomic/EraOfErrors'', penned by LetsPlay/{{Azuritereaction}} in collaboration with artist [=EvilApple513=], hit a snag when [=EvilApple513=] expressed a disinterest in continuing to illustrate the comic back in 2015. While Azurite put out a request for another artist, it seems an agreement with one was never reached, as the series never continued. The domain has since gone offline.
* ''Ever After'' was put on hiatus in 2008 due to the creator having to deal with real life problems. Unfortunately, he decided to focus on other projects afterwards instead and pretty much admitted that it was unlikely the comic would be continued.
* ''Evilish'' stopped updating in late 2007. Six months later, a news post by the artist promised new updates soon, which never came. It's still [[http://evilish.pensandtales.com/ online]], however, unlike most other pensandtales comics.
* ''Everlasting Wanderers'', a ''VideoGame/RagnarokOnline'' based webcomic, initially started off as a series of one-shots and random plots. However, once a MythArc started forming, the updates suddenly ceased and site has since then been taken down due to lack of payment. The author did repost it to his [[http://everwander.deviantart.com/art/comic-001-first-day-89178909 deviantart]] but it's still updated rarely -- if ever.
* ''Webcomic/TheFancyAdventuresOfJackCannon'' hasn't updated since June 2020.
* ''Webcomic/FetchQuestSagaOfTheTwelveArtifacts'' only managed to get 17 chapters into the story before the creators were forced to close it due to real life pressures.
* ''Fight Cast Or Evade'' - a [[UsefulNotes/FurryFandom furry]] [[TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons D&D-based]] adventure comic, hasn't been updated since July 2007.
* ''Filthy Lies'' actually had an official, if abrupt and wholly unsatisfying, ShootTheShaggyDog ending. Then the creator realized he missed doing it, so he brought it back. Before apparently vanishing off the face of the earth - no newspost, no forum message, nothing, to say "I'm sick of this again, so bye!"
* ''Webcomic/FindersKeepers2008'' was put on "indefinite hiatus" on July 3, 2012, citing professional obligations that took priority over the comic. Garth Cameron Graham wouldn't use the word ended, but did say he would return in 2013 with a new comic.
* ''[[http://pc.gamespy.com/flintlocke Flintlocke's Guide to Azeroth]]''; orphaned in late 2006, UnCanceled in February 2007 with a new artist, then abandoned again after only two strips.
** Before that happened, Dave "Fargo" Kosak's other magnum Opus, ''TheDailyVictim'', was orphaned as Fargo was finding a new artist to take over for Lemuel "Hotsoup" Pew.
** Currently on a sequel series titled ''[[http://pc.gamespy.com/flintlocke-vs-the-horde/episode-1-a-horde-of-many-colors/905954p1.html Flintlocke Vs. The Horde]]'' which focuses on an Orc Hunter who gathers a party to take vengeance against Flintlocke's group for killing his father (ignoring the fact that he's an NPC and respawns after a few minutes).
*** With the author's move to Blizzard, the sequel comic has also come to a close. It had more of a conclusion than the previous series, at least.
* ''Webcomic/TheFoxSister'' stopped updating sometime in 2014. As of 2017 the final chapter has been written and an epilogue planned but neither have been published.
* ''Webcomic/TheGaMERCaT'' went on hiatus in April 2019 and hasn't updated since. In March 2020 the author confirmed the hiatus was indefinite.
* ''WebComic/TheGarden'' stopped abruptly in May 2012, around half way through it's sixth chapter.
* ''Webcomic/GeistPanik'' petered out in 2009, the domain disappeared, then came back again. Still no new comics, but you can read what's there at least.
* ''Webcomic/GeneCatlow'' avoided schedule slip so much that when it finally ''did'' happen, fans of the comic initiated a wellness check on artist Albert Temple. [[DiedDuringProduction It turned out that Mr. Temple had died.]]
* ''Webcomic/GGGuys'' fell into this, after the author pulled all of his works from the net during a controversy surrounding him.
* ''Webcomic/GhastlysGhastlyComic'', due to a sudden illness.
* ''[[http://ghostk.wikia.com/wiki/Issue_One:_Crimson_Atmosphere Ghost_K]]'' Manga Series managed an entire complete edition, that even featured a Norwegian translation, with a cliff hanger ending that apparently would be resolved in the next issue. However, the project was abandoned half way through the development of the second issue, despite storyboard plans existing for the rest of the issue and even a third. This decision did not seem to be looked upon fondly by other contributors to the project.
** The creator has stated he has plans for a revival or rebuild version of the series in 2013, so it may be rescued from this category. However, as this author is also tied up in another project at the current time, that claim seems unlikely to be fulfilled.
* ''Webcomic/GoodwillHeroes'' went offline sometime after January 2012 and no archive has been found.
* ''Gossamer Commons''
* ''[[http://gm.alienpigpen.com/ Gryphon Masters]]'' stopped updating with the news of an attempt at a new direction. Its archives are still online.
* ''[[http://www.comiclisting.com/read/172/HammerofGrammar/ Hammer of Grammar]]'' was an upcoming World of Warcraft screencap comic that followed the real life occurrences of human priestess Auden and Dwarf Hunter Gweryc as they made amusing everyday observations about [=WoW=]. It poked fun at things such as common emo tones of Roleplayers, the future of [=WoW=]'s lore or constantly re-rolling characters. Suddenly at when the comic really began to take off, (at the time the author had started selling an actual shirt based on the latest comic) she stopped making the comic due to personal reasons. Despite constant hints that it would come back, the site it was originally hosted on no longer exists.
** The site is back, but last update is still from 2007.
* The webcomic ''Webcomic/HannaIsNotABoysName'' was abandoned by its creator Tess Stone in 2011 without official notice from either Stone or the publisher, and the comic's official website was also taken down. Stone resurfaced a few years later and is now creating the webcomic Not Drunk Enough, but he has never made an official statement concerning why Hanna was discontinued.
* ''Webcomic/{{HellBound}}'' first displayed "temporary hiatus!" in big in its homepage, then said homepage disappeared and domain squatters settled in its place.
* ''Webcomic/TheHeroesOfMiddlecenter'' first slowed to a crawl, then displayed "lack of motivation" on the update progress bar, then eventually went offline in 2011. What's worse, the site was configured to disallow bots, which means it was never archived for the Wayback Machine. In the end the page was even cut from TV Tropes on the grounds that the comic can't even be proven to have existed, leaving this entry as its only gravestone.
* ''Webcomic/{{Hiimdaisy}}'''s fan-comic of ''VideoGame/Persona4'' abruptly ended shortly after the gang defeated Shadow Teddie. The author has since moved on to work on [[Webcomic/CucumberQuest another comic]].
* ''Webcomic/HowIKilledYourMaster'' was a collaborative webcomic by Brian Clevinger, John Wood, Matt Speroni and Jeff Powell which began around the time Clevinger was finishing up ''Webcomic/EightBitTheater.'' The update schedule was always sporadic at best, and it has not been updated since 2011. Clevinger and Speroni have said more than once that it will continue when they are able to work out a schedule, but all the writers have moved on to other projects, so at this point it seems unlikely to continue. In 2015 it was confirmed the comic was permanently cancelled.
* ''Hyrularity'' ended without any kind of resolution and no word on its future.
* ''Webcomic/ImMyOwnMascot'' stopped updating in February 2014 after eight years with no explanation.
* The "About" page of ''Instruction Space'' [[http://visucomics.mechafetus.com/about/ states]] that the creator (Jonathan Kim, better known as [=PersonaSama=] on the net) wanted to make a webcomic to be updated weekly for a year. It lasted four months (from August to November 2010) with a few [[ScheduleSlip slips]], then Persona told that it was on hiatus, but that he was working on some "cool new project" to be finished in February 2011... then nothing, until an update on March 2012, which was the last one.
* ''Webcomic/{{Isonacia}}'' stopped updating in August 2014, two years after it debuted with no explanation.
* ''[[http://jackiesfridge.comicgenesis.com/ Jackie's Fridge]]'', which had been plagued with {{Schedule Slip}}s throughout its run.
* ''The Jar'' wasn't just orphaned, it also had its archive taken down by the author herself because she [[CreatorBacklash "hated it"]].
* ''[[http://www.joeandmonkey.com/ Joe and Monkey]]'' Updated off and on since 2004, with occasional month-or-so hiatuses, then in August 2008, the artist announced he was moving and would be taking a little time to get the comic up and running. The site recently began updating again in July 2009 with a new story arc.
* ''[[Webcomic/RoomiesItsWalkyJoyceAndWalky Joyce and Walky]]'' has yet to finish its final suscribers-only storyline, as David Willis has been busy with [[Webcomic/{{Shortpacked}} other]] [[WebComic/DumbingOfAge comics]].
* ''Webcomic/JustAnotherEscape'', after nearly five years was stopped by the author in 2011, citing major changes in their life incompatible with continuing the work. A final abridged page to end the comic has been mooted, but nothing has been seen of it.
* ''Webcomic/KeychainOfCreation'', an TabletopGame/{{Exalted}} webcomic was never continued after the writer got tendonitis.
* ''Killroy And Tina'', a superhero-type webcomic with an overarching storyline, was abandoned in favor of ''[[Webcomic/TheNonAdventuresOfWonderella The Non-Adventures of Wonderella]]'', a superhero GagADay (really, gag a week) webcomic parodying every superhero trope. The archives have since vanished when Graphic Smash folded.
* ''[[http://kotoc.comicgenesis.com/ Knights of the Old Coding]]'', one of the few sprite comics out there to mix various series and actually do something fun and original with it. Considering that the last actual sprite strip came on the [[http://kotoc.comicgenesis.com/d/20050226.html 3 year anniversary mark]] of the first strip, and the last thing the author uploaded was nearly 5 years ago, it's a wonder this thing is even still on the host anymore.
* Experimental Comic ''[[http://www.tsunamichannel.com/archive.php Kotone]]'' has been pretty much orphaned, despite Akira's claims he'll get back to it.
** He seems to have started again as of August 23, 2010, but is creating some filler get back in the swing of things before continuing with any hanging storylines.
* ''[[http://www.krazylarry.com/ Krazy Larry]]'' went on a long Hiatus between December 2002 and April 2004, before coming back. Then in August of 2004 it went on Hiatus again. It came back in May of 2005 in color and starting the story over in a more linear fashion, renamed "Krazy Larry: Sanitarium." It sporadically updated a handful of times until January of 2006, where it stopped again. However, it should be noted that in May of 2005 the artist Paul Southworth had started work on a new project, ''[[http://www.uglyhill.com/ Ugly Hill]]'', that has been consistently updated, making this a case of waning interest, instead of life conflicts.
* ''[[http://km.comicgenesis.com/ Kurenai Mashin]]'', a graphic novel about the titular blind elf assassin. Its last update (both comic and site) was back in 2007, ending what was periods of long hiatuses. (The previous chapter, Chapter Six lasted from 2005 to 2007 with the new chapter lasting only months before the author seemingly abandoned it for good.)
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Titles L-Q]]
* ''Webcomic/LadySpectraAndSparky'' stopped updating in June 2019 with no explanation.
* ''[[http://langlang.comicgenesis.com/ Lang Lang]]'', a furry comic about SeparatedAtBirth twin (later triplet) sisters reuniting, hasn't updated since March 2008.
* ''[[https://www.leechesloom.com/lastnerds/ch1pg1 The Last Nerds on Earth]]'', about two nerds in the midst of a ZombieApocalypse, lasted a few months in 2014. The author Matt Melvin (who used to be a part of the ''Webcomic/CyanideAndHappiness'' team) wrote it with his then-girlfriend, then they broke up suddenly and he couldn't afford to hire another artist, so the comic was put on permanent hiatus.
* ''[[https://web.archive.org/web/20120215025843/http://www.animeacademy.com/lateforclass.php Late for Class]]'', the comic made by the staff of the as-of-now (2014) defunct anime review site ''Anime Academy'', stopped abruptly August 4, 2007 after only a handful of updates. They probably "pulled the plug" after noticing that it was just a bunch of unfunny gags about anime culture and school shenanigans that went nowhere.
* ''[[http://legendary.comicgenesis.com/ Legendary]]'' was quite good with its updates, but then fell foul of the deadly {{Schedule Slip}}, having been left sitting there since 2007. Then the author went and deleted all the strips, and if you visit the site now, you're greeted with the message ''"This comic sucked, and now it's gone."''. Sigh.
* ''Webcomic/{{Life of Riley}}''. It seems [[WhatDoYouMeanItsNotSymbolic oddly fitting]] that the very last words are "the true name of God."
* ''Webcomic/LifeWithLamarr''. Hasn't updated since 2013, and is no longer hosted anywhere.
* ''Webcomic/{{Loserz}}'' (abandoned since January 2007)
* ''[[https://www.lonelyvincent.com/ The Lonely Vincent Bellingham]]'': Stopped in 2018 and wasn't updated since. The author pretty much confirmed on Twitter she wasn't going to continue it.
* ''Webcomic/ManlyGuysDoingManlyThings'' was officially suspended by its creator in 2018, and has stopped updating.
* ''Webcomic/{{Marla}}'' stopped updating and went offline sometime in late 2015. A reboot was launched in July 2020 but has been dormant since September the same year.
* ''Webcomic/{{Meadowhawk}}'' stopped updating in June 2017 after the author suffered a CreatorBreakdown.
* ''[[http://metalwing.red-comedy.net Metal Wing]]'' just sort of stopped updating in 2007. Updates before then were laggy.
* ''Webcomic/TheMeek'' started off reasonably well, the first three forty-five page chapters taking eight, eleven and fourteen months respectively to appear. Chapter four saw severe ScheduleSlip, taking over four ''years'' to complete. Chapter five took around a year and a half to be finished but things ground to a virtual halt with Chapter six - the cover was published in December 2018 but the first page was not published until February 2020 and there have been no updates since. At the current rate of publishing, it will take over ''fifty years'' for chapter six to be completed.
* ''Mind Flayed'', a story focused upon a Mind Flayer raised on the surface world and gaining companions who are counterstereotypes of their species (an AxCrazy elf, a Half-Orc Druid and a good-aligned Lich) was eventually canceled after several {{Schedule Slip}}s, changing artstyles and eventually just stopping, citing personal reasons.
* ''Webcomic/{{MOLEBASHED}}'' has been taken offline by its creator and is now only available in print form.
* ''Webcomic/{{Monsterful}}'' by Pablo Fiorentino was updated from 2010 to 2014, initially a page a week, then a page every other week, and eventually the last few pages only rolled in once a month. The comic remained up on the Monsterful.com website and readable for over two years, the author's online presence dwindling in the meantime following a new job, until the author abruptly removed the comic itself and all of its content from the site in May 2016, replacing the home page only with an author's note proclaiming the comic's indefinite hiatus and an intent to reboot the comic sometime in the future. The site's domain expired by 2019, and although the site was captured in the Wayback Machine pre-official hiatus and can still be browsed to an extent, none of the actual comic pages were captured and a mirror of the comic has not surfaced as of April 2019.
* ''Webcomic/{{Morphe}}'' was discontinued in October 2017 due to conflicting time commitments and the August 2017 announcement of the upcoming end-of-life for UsefulNotes/AdobeFlash, the comic medium. The creators provided an overview of [[WhatCouldHaveBeen the planned story]] and hosted a Q&A shortly after the announcement.
* Lover Of Piggies, the author of ''[[http://mortifer.smackjeeves.com Mortifer]]'' was working on two other series in the past, both well written, both abandoned (''Mortifer'', on the other hand, is still going strong at over 1100 pages). The first of these, ''Dei Anghel Ex'', was very good, but it was also very dark -- the author decided that writing ''two'' dark series at once was probably bad for her mental health (Though it seems to have gotten a SpiritualSuccessor in the form of her new webcomic, ''[[http://fringehappy.smackjeeves.com Fringe Happy]]''). The other, ''Luni's Island'', was a light-hearted comedy, which was abandoned for reasons undiscovered.
* ''Webcomic/MushroomGo'' was finally [[http://mushroomgo.thecomicseries.com/comics/147/ cancelled for good]] in December 2013 after numerous hiatus and attempts to get a new artist after the original wanted to improve the art and update timing. Charming story about a Toad from the ''Franchise/SuperMarioBros'' falling overboard and getting saved by, and joining, a pirate crew of Bowser Baddies sailing a way forward for their own lives. Lasted about 140 pages with some very complicated story, the final page provided a synopsis of what was planned, stretching what would have been at least a half-decade more of updates.
* ''Webcomic/MysticRevolution'' last updated in January 2016. The creator posted an update in October 2016 explaining why the project was on hold and promising to return to it at an unspecified future date but no further updates have occurred.
* ''[[http://captainn.net/main.html N-Fans: The Series]]'' is an unfortunate blend of this trope and DiedDuringProduction. The comic was about the original creator and illustrator, Webster Swenson, and several of his friends going into the world of video games a la ''WesternAnimation/CaptainNTheGameMaster''. Sadly, Webster passed away unexpectedly in 2007 due to complications from diabetes. His friends who inspired the other characters made a few attempts to keep the website alive and continue the comic, but to no avail; the comic has stagnated since 2008, and even the forums - the last part of the website to continue to see updates - fell into disuse in 2015.
* ''Webcomic/NamiWarriors'' tried to prevent ScheduleSlip in August 2010 by going from twice a week updates to once a week updates. A few weeks later, the strip was abandoned altogether.
* ''Webcomic/NahastLandsOfStrife'' hasn't updated since May 2016.
* ''Never Never'' by John "The Gneech" Robey has, over the past few years, spent more time on hiatus than updating. This is entirely down to time constraints - initially, he had to drop it in favour of his first webcomic, ''The Suburban Jungle''. Since that time, a few guest artists have taken it on, before having to bow out themselves.
* ''Webcomic/{{Newheimburg}}'' stopped updating in July 2019 after seven years with no explanation.
* ''Webcomic/TheNightBelongsToUs'' hasn't been updated since July 2021.
* ''Webcomic/NoRestForTheWicked'' has not been updated since (according to the site's copyright notice) 2012. The author's dA gallery shows no updates since 2013.
* ''Not in My Backyard'' may be the oldest example. It started fairly consistently in 1998 and started to suffer rampant ScheduleSlip between June 2000 and January 2001. After getting back on schedule, it abruptly ended in August 2001, and creator Dale Taylor disappeared for many years. According to [[https://twitter.com/d4/status/439738426653290496 this tweet]], he ended the strip because it failed to get syndicated within ten years of him creating it. Despite this, ''Not in My Backyard'' stayed online until about 2019. Taylor disappeared from the Internet for many years before starting a toy line called Forge of Honor in 2013; this quickly fizzled out too, with the official website long defunct and an [[https://forgeofhonor.wordpress.com/ accompanying blog]] ending at August 2014.
* ''Off Saving the World'' was updated frequently by its creator. Then, updates mysteriously ceased, with no future pages as of mid 2018, and no word on what happened. The comic is still available through Tumblr, but the website on which it was mainly hosted has since shut down.
* The once popular webcomic ''Webcomic/OffWhite'' gradually begin updating less and less frequently, to the point fans estimated that going by the average upload rate, it would take past ''2050'' for the comic to finish. The comic was finally cancelled.
* ''[[http://oldskooled.comicgenesis.com/ OldSkooled]]'' was very slow at updating for many years but still renowned. It hadn't updated since a single strip went up in late 2006. But, a new strip was posted Feb 2010, along with a "Let's see where this goes" attitude. (As of 2021, however, the comic has not seen an update since, though somehow the domain remains up.)
* ''Webcomic/OlympusOverdrive'' went on a long-term hiatus in 2015, and the comic's website has since gone offline. According the the creators, it was never intended to be a full comic project, and was mainly a way for them to practice for larger-scale projects in the future; as both of the comic's creators would soon be working on Platform/{{Hiveworks}}' upcoming project ''Webcomic/SleeplessDomain'', they decided it would be best to put this comic aside for the time being. The comic's artist Oscar Vega did express, however, that while he doesn't feel that the story was well-suited to a comic format, he does hope to eventually revisit ''Olympus Overdrive'' in some form.
* ''Omega Syndrome'', a fantasy strip with rather good art and a decently interesting storyline that ended extremely abruptly in favor of the artist starting some other strip.
* ''Webcomic/{{Orbit}}'' has been abandoned since March 2010, after the artist announced that he'd prefer to work on something that challenged his art skills more (as ''Orbit'' was, by his own admission, a CutAndPasteComic).
* ''Webcomic/OurLittleAdventure'' last updated in March 2018 after years of ScheduleSlip, with the author confirming on the forum in September 2019 that the comic is on hold indefinitely.
* ''Webcomic/OurWorld'' ended chapter 4 with a {{Cliffhanger}}, and the creators decided to take a short break. Next year, when their host Platform/TheKatbox shut down, they were still unavailable. In 2021 they stated they were busy with their lives and were not planning to continue the comic.
* ''Webcomic/PantyAndStockingWithGarterbeltSeason2'' was put on hiatus since October 1, 2017. The authors O-Tako Studio want to focus on a new project, or that's what they said: they were actually [[https://otako-studios.tumblr.com/ commiting copyright infringement]], and then the studio's owner was [[https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/1508929-twitter arrested for human trafficking]] among other things.
* ''[[http://picklegirl.comicgenesis.com/ Pickle Girl]]'' has not been updated since the end of July 2006.
* ''Pillars of Faith'', a webcomic following the further adventures of Faith from ''Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer'', slowed and stalled out on March 29th, 2009.
* ''Webcomic/{{Pilot}}'' has not updated since March 2019 and its [[Platform/TwitterX Twitter]] account has been deleted.
* ''Webcomic/{{Platformers}}'' has been discontinued since 2020 due to the author not having time or energy to come back to the comic.
* ''[[http://www.platinumgrit.com/ PlatinumGrit]]'' made it through 20 chapters, but hasn't updated since 2009.
* ''[[http://blueguy.comicgenesis.com/ Pokechow]]'' always had a fairly erratic update schedule, and was last updated in September 2007. The worst part? The strip leaves off on a ''blatant'' cliffhanger.
** The strip has continued as of 2010.
* ''Webcomic/PoppyOPossum'' officially ended production in November 2018 after sporadic updates for most of the year. The last few updates were light novel-style text entries.
* The last strip of ''Powerup Adventure'', a {{Spinoff}} of ''Webcomic/PowerupComics'', is from July 30, 2008, with the author's comment saying he's excited about what's coming up. Given that the original was a StealthParody, this was probably done intentionally as a parody of this trope.
* ''[[http://psychoteers.com Psychoteers]]'' stopped updating in 2006 after a series of hiatus announcements and semi-updates.
* ''[[http://puppykittengrandadventure.smackjeeves.com Puppy Kitten Grand Adventure]]'' hasn't updated since Valentine's Day 2009.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Titles R-U]]
* ''Webcomic/RaineDog'', for reasons explained on its own page, and Creator/DanaSimpson's page. Nothing has happened with this comic since 2011, and probably won't, with the success of ''ComicStrip/PhoebeAndHerUnicorn''.
* ''Webcomic/RealLifeComics'' has gone through several periods of dormancy. The first serious hiatus was in December 2015. The comic finally returned in September 2018, nearly three years later. It then updated until July 2019 and stopped again. It returned in June 2020 and has been updating on a fairly regular basis until going sporadic in late 2022 and as of this writing the last comic was posted on November 18, 2022. It has returned again as of March 2024.
* ''Redemption'' was discontinued after three (or four) restarts over the course of its life, none of which ever made it past its prologue. The site where it was hosted died earlier this year.
* ''Residence Life'' abruptly stopped updating sometime before 2004, eventually losing the domain and later yet disappearing from Platform/ComicGenesis.
* ''[[http://rts.lunistice.com/ Return to Sender]]'': After no updates for approximately two years, the author finally posted a notice that not only was she not working on the series anymore, she'd ''forgotten her login credentials'' to post the announcement until then.
* ''Webcomic/RPGWorld'': The strip was up to the final confrontation and near completion when the author, Ian Jones-Quartey, finally broke into animation full time. He's since worked on a popular shows you may have heard of, including ''WesternAnimation/TheVentureBrothers'', ''WesternAnimation/AdventureTime'', and ''WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse''.
** Similarly, a spin-off project, ''Starsomething'', a joint project with the author of ''Adventurers!'', fell into a hole around the same time for the same reason.
** Also, as of June 2016, a fan comic continuation, ''[[http://rpgworld.the-comic.org/comics/ RPG World: Fan Revival]]'', was started and has taken up where the original left off... and then proceeded to go on hiatus in November 2016.
** RPG World got a FullyAbsorbedFinale in, of all places, the 30th episode of ''WesternAnimation/OKKOLetsBeHeroes'' (of which IJQ is creator and showrunner). IJQ later revealed that doing so wasn't his idea initially, [[http://ianjq.tumblr.com/post/166049167579/here-it-is-the-final-rpg-world-comic-a-recent some of the show's writers]] wanted to see it concluded, and he obliged.
* ''Webcomic/SailorRanko,'' started in March 2008 and lasted a bit more than a year. In November 2009 it made a big fanfare of coming back and coughed up a handful of new comics before ceasing. In November 2010 it made a big fanfare about coming back and coughed up one comic. There were sporadic updates until February 2011 due to having artist difficulties and change thereof, along with not many people donating to keep updates coming in (the artist also does Ruby Thursday), and Burger Becky (the writer behind the comic) had surgery around early April whilst the artist had an eye injury around the same time. All this considering, it looked like an indefinite hiatus for the comic and the fanfic novels that the comic's based on. Then the comic came back in September 2021, released over 200 strips in less than a year, wrapping up the first volume and starting the next one. As of December 2022, though, it has not ben updated.
* ''Webcomic/SailorSun'' is a rare aversion: things looked bleak for a while after the author spent time in the US for employment reasons and even bleaker when he was deployed to Afghanistan, and even after he got back to Canada things weren't looking good. Then he decided to complete the story and the pace actually picked up because he had a definite ending to write towards.
* ''Salad Days'' stopped updating for a long time. There was news of a restart at hand in 2008, despite the comic's prevailing artistic and writing talents, but as of 2009 it still hasn't budged an inch further.
** The authors came out in late 2009 and announced that the comic was put on indefinite hiatus, and since the original domain was swallowed by domain squatters, the archived pages were moved [[http://saladdays.littlefoolery.com/ here]].
* ''Sandwich World'' went through a period where it was updating, literally, about once a ''year'', but now appears to have been completely abandoned.
* ''[=SeaGate=]'' simply disappeared one day.
* ''Webcomic/ScarletAndEmerald'' is possibly the worst offender on this page. The first strip was posted on April 15th 2016 and the fourth and last strip was posted on April 22nd 2016, just a week later before the comic stopped being updated.
* ''Webcomic/SexyLosers''. The creator/artist stopped in 2006 due to RSI injuries that made it painful to draw. A couple scattered strips have been released since then, though the website even went down for a period in 2008. Three strips were posted over the course of 2009 to celebrate the comic's 10th anniversary.
** Even if it never comes fully back, it seems that as of August 2009 the artist is finishing up at least one of the hanging storylines.
*** The comic was eventually finished, with all plotlines tied up (at least to Clay's satisfaction). He now draws ''Webcomic/DepressionComix''.
** Other issues included lack of payment (despite being incredibly popular, he never saw any money from ad revenue from the various people who hosted him) and Real Life blackmail attempts threatening his employment over the comic.
* ''[[http://sharingauniverse.comicgenesis.com/ Sharing a Universe]]'' Jan 20 2003 to Aug 10 2008. The comic stopped updating in the middle of an arc, with no warning or note - for all we know the author may be dead.
* ''Shaw Island'', which isn't even online anymore. [[http://www.shaw-island.com/ Its domain]] is now occupied by a fan site that may or may not be online someday.
* ''Webcomic/{{Shredded Moose}}'' was abandoned and taken offline after it ended. Many of the strips are still missing. Given the comic's rather negative reputation, most have assumed the creators considered it an OldShame.
* ''Webcomic/SolsticeTwins''. The website and Wikia vanished years ago and there's little evidence this webcomic ever existed.
* ''Webcomic/{{Sonichu}}'' was prone to [[ScheduleSlip schedule slips]] even before the trolls got involved; when the pressure increased in 2010, Chris Chandler, the author of the series, [[CreatorBreakdown essentially quit the comic]] and blamed them for draining out the "[[CaptainErsatz crea]][[ClicheStorm tivity]]".
** However, several brand-new pages for the previously-abandoned Sonichu #11 were in fact uploaded by Chris in September 2015. Since the creation of new content apparently depends on monetary contributions from the fans, it remains to be seen whether yet more new material is forthcoming.
* ''Webcomic/SpecialSchool'' has been un-updated since Christmas 2012.
* ''Spells And Whistles'' started out as a humorous fantasy strip, then became more known for several false starts, unexplained hiatuses, announcements of abandonment, and even a few failed reboots in different formats before finally being abandoned again for what is assumed to be the final time. The site is now completely offline with no archives, and the domain redirects to ''Good Ship Chronicles'', yet ''another'' abandoned series by the same artist.
** The author eventually resurfaced on a dedicated [[https://spellsandwhistles.tumblr.com/ Tumblr]] that archives the entirety of the series, as well as an admission that he considers the series an OldShame and it will ''definitely'' not be returning.
* ''Spellshocked''. A furry[[note]]the cast included humans, {{Beast M|an}}en, dragons, a cockatrice, and stranger things, like the InvoluntaryShapeshifter headmaster, who had the cause of the last world war sealed inside him[[/note]] comic about a quarter-dragon from a family of actors enrolling into a magical academy and immediately befriending an accident-prone sophomore GadgeteerGenius, a gray fox. Featured really nice art, likable characters, deeply fleshed-out "post-fantasy" {{Magitek}} world with DarkAndTroubledPast. The first incarnation started on Keenspace (now Platform/ComicGenesis) in 2000, immediately received a lot of positive reviews, praising its potential, but ground to a halt in the middle of an impromptu play telling the world's backstory (there were rumours of creative team's RL problems). The strip was rebooted in 2001, went into a slightly different direction, moved to a site of its own and halted again. The author tried to continue or restart the story several more times, meanwhile filling the site with more background info. The site has since fallen into disarray, but at least two partial archives still exists: [[http://spellshocked.comicgenesis.com/d/20010101.html CG archive start]], [[http://spellshocked.comicgenesis.com/d/20020215.html end]]; [[http://delyria.com/spellshocked/ Delyria chapter 1 index]].
* Sadly appears to be the case with ''Webcomic/SquidNinja''; updates ceased in June of 2013 following an announcement by creator Gillen that he and his wife had had a baby.
* ''[[http://starbooze.smackjeeves.com/ Starbooze]]'' was halted due to the typical struggles of the life of a student.
* ''[[http://redshine.comicgenesis.com/ Starcommand]]'' has not been updated since December 2009.
* ''Webcomic/{{Stellarscape}}'' has not been updated since August 15, 2015. Strangely enough, the blog it was hosted on was updated at least a few times after the comic's final update, but there was no explanation or announcement of the comic's stasis.
* ''Strings of Fate'' was a fantastic little webcomic by Jen Wang (artist of ''Koko Be Good'') featuring the EasternZodiac and TheFourGods (and then some) which was unfortunately abandoned just as things were getting exciting in the sequel. And then the archives went down. If you dig around, you can find zip files of it a couple of chapters into the sequel, though.
* ''Webcomic/SuperEffective'', a ''Pokémon Red/Blue'' parody by the same artist of ''Webcomic/VGCats'' (and hosted on the same site), has been on indefinite hiatus since 2014, [[https://www.vgcats.com/index.php#MAY-12-2020 was officially declared dead in 2020]], and the links to the comic no longer work. The site hosted yet another comic named ''Adventure Log'', based on ''Final Fantasy XI'', whose fate was even worse, since it was abandoned after a measly 7 pages.
* ''[[http://www.smbthecomic.com/ Super Mario Bros. 2]]'', the (more or less) official webcomic sequel of [[Film/SuperMarioBros1993 the movie]], which famously ended with an unresolved SequelHook. Unlike the parent movie, the webcomic didn't even manage to get an ending: it was supposed to last ten chapters and stopped abruptly in 2015 during the fourth one.
* ''[[http://kalduras.comicgenesis.com/ Tales of Kalduras]]''. A comic about a girl [[WalkingTheEarth Walking the Kalduras]] to fill the blanks in the ultimate book of knowledge, [[GovernmentAgencyOfFiction or so she claims]]. Featured refreshingly novel approaches to {{Beast M|an}}en (and CatFolk in particular), HealingFactor, BizarreSexualDimorphism, as well as a small army of [[ChekhovsGunman Chekhov's gunmen]], most of whom didn't have a chance to fire in its first 3 years. Then it stopped abruptly. Several weeks later the author explained that what started as a teenager's hobby was eating all his free time, not even leaving enough to sleep. And disappeared for good.
* ''[[http://talismen.keenspot.com/ Talismen: Return of the Exile]]'' is notable for the professional quality of its artwork and full-page layout. It underwent a deal of ScheduleSlip before the artist finally, formally and unexpectedly called time on the whole work. It is sorely missed.
* ''Webcomic/{{Teahouse}}'' was discontinued in 2014, only about a third of the way through its planned run, after the authors became too busy to keep working on it. They even posted an outline on the website of how the plot was supposed to go out of consideration for curious fans.
* ''[[http://www.prdarkfox.com/ There's Something About Tails]]'' always had a pretty rocky update schedule, with at least three periods of not updating for over six months. The most recent update was some time in mid-2012; the site only updated about once a year before going quiet entirely in 2016.
* ''[[http://thosedestined.pensandtales.com/ Those Destined]]'': The artist shut it down after six years and six hundred strips, citing real life factors and general burn out. Then the website itself stopped responding.
* ''Webcomic/{{Thunderstruck}}'' shut down in 2009, due to Grayson Towler shifting focus to his professional works. In January 2014 he revived it as a once-a-month updater.
* ''Tio and Carla''. Hosted on the former [=KeenSpace=], did very nicely for a few years there. Then in the middle of a storyline that was shaping up to be pretty interesting, poof. The updates just stopped, and there was no forum, not even a news post to say why it stopped. A year and a half later (this was around about 2005-2006) later, it flat-out vanished from the host entirely.
* ''Todd and Penguin'' has been on indefinite hiatus since 2009, and while David Wright has not posted anything on the site regarding the hiatus, it's clear that he has no plans to return to it.
* ''Webcomic/{{Tove}}'' stopped abruptly in 2019 with not much to go on aside from the author, Severin Piehl, warning readers of a ScheduleSlip ahead of time. Piehl is active on Twitter, but has not mentioned the comic's fate.
* ''Webcomic/TriggerStar'' has been on hiatus since 2012. Artist Kevin Bolk occasionally responds to inquiries about the comic's status with "The comic isn't dead, just on hiatus."
* ''[[http://www.tsoalr.com Turn Signals on a Land Raider]]'' was discontinued due to time constraints and the artist wanting to start a new webcomic.
* ''Webcomic/TwoEvilScientists'' stopped abruptly in 2011 with no word from the author.
* ''Urban Dragons'' has been on "indefinite hiatus" since December 6th 2006
* After over 10 years of perfect ScheduleSlip aversion, ''Webcomic/UserFriendly'' went quiet in June 2009 after the creator lost a family member. The strip returned in August of that year, then stopped updating again that December. Aside from a 3-week run of new, [[CerebusSyndrome more serious]] strips in November 2010, has remained quiet ever since.

[[folder:Titles V-Z]]
* ''Webcomic/{{Vampirates}}'' began a long, unplanned hiatus in 2009 before being officially discontinued Jan. 9th, 2011.
* After 5 years and a run of 237 web comics, ''[[http://www.vanvonhunter.com Van Von Hunter]]'' succumbed to this in February 2007 (probably due to the author focusing more and more attention on his book series).
* ''Webcomic/VaticanAssassins'' stopped updating in May 2017 after thirty one episodes with no explanation.
* ''[[http://verardi.blackstarr513.com Verardi Famiglia]]'' went on indefinite hiatus despite a promising tale and somewhat consistent updates.
* The fantasy horror webcomic ''Webcomic/{{Vigil}}'' stopped updating in late September 2010, the author citing lack of enjoyment in making the comic as the reason.
* ''Waiting For Bob'' - and it may have been the plan all along, given the name.
* ''Webcomic/WallyAndOsborne'' hasn't updated since 2008.
* ''Webcomic/WaywardSons'' started in May 2010 and maintained a consistent update schedule until August 2012. After that updates became more and more sporadic until they finally stopped in November 2013. A couple of subsequent posts advertising other projects promised the comic would resume in late 2015 but as of 2020 nothing has been seen.
* ''Weishaupt Scholars'' (revived as a computer game)
* ''Webcomic/{{Wereworld}}'' hasn't had a true update since October 2012. A January '13 artist note promises that new updates are on the way.
* ''Webcomic/TheWesternGang'' stopped updating in December 2017 with no explanation.
* ''Webcomic/WickedAwesomeAdventure'' hasn't updated since October 2017 and an August 2019 post indicated that further updates were almost certainly not going to happen.
* Part webcomic, part fan-ad for a brand of high-power laser pointers, ''WICKEDPOWERED'' stalled in 2007, but the creators attempted to continue "updating" by having the BigBad trigger a [[AssPull time loop]] and then reposting all the comics done so far. Classy, guys, real classy.
* ''Webcomic/WhiteNinjaComics'' hasn't updated in quite some time. They also still haven't added the official apology that they promised.
* ''Webcomic/TheWotch'', slowly succumbed to ScheduleSlip as the author's life became more and more chaotic – returning to school, Marriage fell apart, etc. Eventually she stopped updating altogether, and eventually started working with the ''Webcomic/CityOfReality'' team. One stated reason is that she feels embarrassed that she let the ScheduleSlip go for so long.
** It came back to life on [[http://www.thewotch.com/index.php?date=2011-08-08 August 8th, 2011]] with art from ''Webcomic/CityOfReality''[='s=] author.
** Then it petered out again, got a new artist again, and stopped again. As of August 2023, the last story comic dates July 20, 2020, with nine filler updates up to June 2023.
* ''Webcomic/WTFComics'' hasn't updated since 2016.
* ''Xannys Curse'', a series which the author has made ''three'' separate attempts to produce.
* ''[[https://web.archive.org/web/20101119073341/http://www.aoihayashi.com/your_wings_are_mine.html Your Wings Are Mine]]'' by Aoi Hayashi (late 2000 to early 2010) has ended for no full reason given. A message was given from the author in mid-2012 to confirm that the series was most likely completely dead (having not be updated in over two years - leaving a bunch of cliffhangers) and that while all of the pages would be left on the site everything else would be shut down. The original domain has since been taken by a porn web page.
* ''Webcomic/ZeldaComic'' stopped updating in 2011 and was officially canceled in 2014.
* ''[[http://www.zogonia.com/ Zogonia/Mount Zogon]]'', which, around the time [[TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons Wizards of the Coast]] took over the two D&D magazines, went on hiatus until "June" (an even-further-in-the-past June than the Thursday ''9th Elsewhere'' promised). In June, all content vanished from the site, leaving just the background pattern and nothing else.
* ''Webcomic/ZombieAndMummy'' has not been updated since 2003.
* ''[[http://www.thezombiehunters.com/ The Zombie Hunters]]'' has not been updated since March of 2018.
* Webomic "Wanko" was updated daily for almost three years, and then suddenly the comic went offline with no word before being deleted in its entirety. The only proof of its existence are archives made by webcomic databases, and the author still has his profile on Tapas, but has no statements as to why Wanko was cancelled nor if he would ever return to it.
