[[AC:American Football players]]
* Special shoutout to the entirety of the 2013-2015 Seattle Seahawks defenses, who took up the moniker "The Legion of Boom" after the name of Gorilla Grodd's Legion of Doom from ''WesternAnimation/SuperFriends''.
* Recent articles as of January 2015 have listed that Aaron Rodgers is known to reference ''The Princess Bride'' and the Green Bay Packers offensive linemen are known to have regular ''TabletopGame/SettlersOfCatan'' games in their downtime. Rodgers and Clay Matthews are both fans of ProfessionalWrestling, and both appeared in a video package preceding a broadcast of Wrestling/WrestleMania.
* 1996 #1 NFL draft pick and former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Marcus Jones, currently a mixed martial artist on season 10 of ''Series/TheUltimateFighter'', is by his own admission "passionate" about ''TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons'' and comic books. He also likes to garden, but that doesn't count.
* Chicago Bears Linebaker Lance Briggs is a huge fan of comic books, especially of ''ComicBook/TheDarkness'', ''ComicBook/XMen'', ''Pitt'', and ''ComicBook/SilverSurfer''. A big enough fan that comic books are more or less all he talks about, though he tries to be discreet about his hobby. When asked which super hero he would be he just sighed, rolled his eyes and said: "Well, I wouldn't wear tights. I would have leadership qualities. I would love to be a mind reader. That would be my power. But no tights. A snug fit, but no tights. What color costume? You want to hear me say orange and blue. No, something dark. I would be strong, dark, macho. A medium build. I would wear a loose jacket, a contemporary costume. I am not a tights guy, man. You get caught in tights, and you cannot get out." The sign of a true comic book geek.
* During the time when he was known as Chad Ochocinco, Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson was so eager to get his hands on an early copy of ''VideoGame/CallOfDuty: Black Ops'' that he [[http://twitter.com/OGOchoCinco/status/14255453009 offered Bengals season tickets]] to anyone who could get it for him.
* Arizona Cardinals/Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receiver Steve Breaston is a huge fan of comic books, he was even able to have a [[http://www.azcardinals.com/news-and-events/article-2/Breaston-Visit-Spawns-Opportunity/0a1c0d75-5e6c-447a-927c-3b3702668e81 meeting]] with [[ComicBook/{{Spawn}} Todd McFarlane]] who lives in Arizona. He also writes poetry.
* Former Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe is really into video games, most notably VideoGame/WorldOfWarcraft. He is also the bassist in a Minnesota rock band called Tripping Icarus, and he posted a WebVideo/{{Hitler Rant|s}} video he made on Website/YouTube [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_opRmBPPBk relating to the NFL Lockout]].
** He has even posted on Website/GameFAQS: (Link: [[http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/2000211-sports-and-racing-nfl/61740371]])
** As of January 2013, Kluwe has a HeroUnit in ''VideoGame/XcomEnemyUnknown'' named after him as a reward for beating one of the game's developers in an online match.
** He also has an NPC in ''VideoGame/ShadowrunReturns'' based on himself, having donated to the game's kickstarter.
** Kluwe wrote an [[http://trenchescomic.com/tales/post/it-aint-all-fame-and-fortune "anonymous"]] Tales from TheTrenches in January 2013 as well. Guess the offseason is giving him time to kill.
** It gets better. He's also a Redditor, had a GPA of 3.87 in university and graduated ''in three years with a double major'' in history and political science, both of which are decidedly nerdy topics. He is also a DeadpanSnarker with {{Keet}}ish tendencies to boot. And the name of his upcoming book is, wait for it, ''Beautifully Unique Sparkleponies.'' Chris is basically almost every troper ever, in the form of a single NFL punter.
* Heisman winner and Washington Football Team quarterback Robert Griffin III loves ''Franchise/MassEffect'' and has an impressive sock collection, including Barney socks, Sesame Street socks, and Superman socks (the ones with the capes).
* Houston Texans player Brennan Williams is basically what happens if you made a 4chan user into a large NFL offensive lineman. He's into wrestling, anime (especially ''Anime/KillLaKill''), ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}'' and other things. His twitter handle is even GREATBLACKOTAKU.
** It's not [[FanNickname nicknamed]] ''Medieval Poker'' in Spain for nothing.
* Former Green Bay Packers defensive end Mike Daniels is [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZQd0jLIkPY a dedicated anime fan]], citing ''Anime/DragonBallZ'' as his all-time favorite anime and Piccolo as his all-time favorite character. He even declares himself an anime fan first, pro football player second. His love of anime converted his family to anime and that's how they spend time together.
* Kansas City Chiefs offensive guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif completed his MD at [=McGill=] University in his hometown of UsefulNotes/{{Montreal}} while playing in the league. He became even more notable for opting out of the 2020 season in the midst of [[UsefulNotes/COVID19Pandemic COVID-19]] to serve as an orderly in a Montreal care home, a decision that would eventually earn him a share of ''Magazine/SportsIllustrated''[='=]s Sportsperson of the Year award.
* Minnesota Vikings:
** Wide receiver Justin Jefferson is an avid Fortnite fan, to the point where he was the first NFL player to be featured in the game, along with a dance he made famous during his time at LSU, known as "The Griddy".
** Former running back Robert Smith is a well-known fan of ''Series/MysteryScienceTheater3000'', and even did a cameo in the [[Recap/MysteryScienceTheater3000S08E03TheMolePeople eighth season episode]] lampooning ''Film/TheMolePeople''. He is also an avid amateur astronomer who spent his free time in the pros looking at images from the Hubble Space Telescope and later appeared in Timothy Ferris's PBS documentary ''Seeing in the Dark''.
* Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is rather cerebral - he's known for his love of chess, enjoys playing ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosUltimate'' [[note]]He mains Ness, for the record[[/note]], once wore a [[WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants Krusty Krab]] shirt at an official press conference, and is also very up to date on politics. He also has a Master's degree (well beyond what a college football player usually aims for if they get drafted), and said degree is in Consumer and Family Finances. And on top of all of it, he's a DeadpanSnarker with a ''very'' dry sense of humour.
* Arizona QB Kyler Murray is a notorious Call of Duty fanatic and game spokesman, to the point that even TV announcers tease him about it mid-game. One redditor put together a tongue-in-cheek analysis to claim that Murray's performance declines during Double XP weekends.
* Detroit Lions (at the time) running back Jamaal Williams paid homage to his love of anime twice around the 2022 ''Sunday Night Football'' season finale: his ''Franchise/{{Naruto}}''-themed [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12RJiLex6jI player introduction]], and a post-game press conference where he said he wanted to "go home and play ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}''" (he subsequently chided a reporter for mispronouncing it as "pokey man").

[[AC:Auto Racers]]
* A number of professional race drivers play racing video games, either for training and/or for fun. Most commonly mentioned is ''VideoGame/GranTurismo''. Players include Tanner Foust (Formula Drift), Sébastien Loeb (WRC and Lemans), and Sebastian Vettel (''UsefulNotes/FormulaOne''). Creator/JeremyClarkson also recalled the late UsefulNotes/RichardBurns playing ''VideoGame/SEGARally'' with Clarkson's son in a special memorial segment for the driver when he died of cancer in 2005. And speaking of Loeb, he initially trained as a gymnast prior to getting into auto racing.
* UsefulNotes/{{NASCAR}} driver Denny Hamlin has an interesting example. Before racing at Pocono Raceway for the first time, a track at the time known for being tough for rookies, he raced on the then recently made racing simulator [[Creator/PapyrusDesignGroup NASCAR Racing 2003 Season]] before the race, and [[RookieRedRanger won his first two races at the track]] as well as two more later on in his career.
* Other NASCAR driver Ryan Blaney has stated on his twitter that he is an [[HeroicWannabe aspiring]] [[Franchise/StarWars Jedi]]
* UsefulNotes/WorldRallyChampionship co-driver Julien Ingrassia is known to be quite the metalhead, having made guest appearances in a number of concerts held during the rallies he and UsefulNotes/SebastienOgier compete in.
* Besides having played golf since his teens, Welsh former rally co-driver Creator/NickyGrist has expressed his enthusiasm for rugby on Twitter.
* Estonian WRC co-driver Martin Järveoja (who currently serves as UsefulNotes/OttTanak's co-driver) is also a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3AJnmQxqDs judoka]] and is a five-time national champion at that.

[[AC: Baseball players]]
* Former pitcher CC Sabathia is a serious video game enthusiast and has his own custom [=PS3=] system with a hardwood finish and emblazoned with his signature and number. Recently, he warned against the dangers of haphazardly chucking small explosives in a PSA for [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2Qpui1hYBw one of his favorites.]]
* Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling plays war games and {{MMORPG}}s. Originally, Schilling planned to start an MMORPG company after his retirement from baseball; he wound up starting Green Monster Games (now 38 Studios, who developed ''Kingdoms of Amalur'') before he retired. Once, when Schilling used to pitch for Arizona, he was rocked for two homers in the same game by former teammate Doug Glanville. After the game Doug dedicated that beating to the memory of Bing-bong, his ''VideoGame/{{Everquest}}'' character that Schilling had left to die. Schilling has such a good relationship with ''Sony Online Entertainment'' that he asked them to add his likeness into ''VideoGame/EverQuestII'' for a charity event. The developers agreed, and put his voice, face, and likeness into the game, complete with his jersey's number painted on his red armor. This very character would later become a permanent part of the game under the name of "[[SignificantAnagram Clint Gilcrush]]". He also founded the company Multi-Man Publishing '''specifically''' to keep his wargame of choice, ''Advanced Squad Leader'', in print following Hasbro's purchase of Avalon Hill. The man is '''''dedicated'''''.
* San Francisco Giants outfielder Hunter Pence is a pretty hardcore gamer who prefers [=RPGs=] like Torchlight, the '''VideoGame/{{Diablo}}'' series, and ''VideoGame/WorldOfWarcraft''. He even does gaming livestreams on Twitch.
** He ''really'' likes [[http://cdn3.sbnation.com/imported_assets/1406985/hunter-spencer-wields-frostmourne_medium.jpg Warcraft.]]
** He also [[https://twitter.com/ThaGuyOnTheLeft/status/710159651258703873 likes to play]] ''TabletopGame/MagicTheGathering''.
* Toronto Blue Jays pitcher R.A. Dickey, oh so much. He named his bats "Orcrist the Goblin Cleaver", "Herugrim" and "Hrunting", after swords in The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings and Beowulf, respectively. His Twitter page says he is a Star Wars nerd and a Ninja in Training, among other things.
** He's a voracious reader in general having graduated from college with a degree in English literature and saying that if he hadn't become an athlete he'd have been an English professor.
** He also has the [[Franchise/StarWars Imperial March]] played when taking the mound to warm up, or the Series/GameOfThrones theme song.
* Shohei Ohtani, designated hitter and pitcher (a rarity in MLB) for the Los Angeles Angels, is a fan of ''Manga/JujutsuKaisen'', to the point where Lost in Paradise: the first ED, was used as his walk-in song.

[[AC: Basketball players]]
* Tim Duncan: now-retired leader of the San Antonio Spurs, widely acknowledged as the best power forward of all time, one of the 50 greatest basketball players of all time, two-time MVP, five championship rings... Oh, and he has a degree in Psychology, loves Renaissance fairs, he's into VideoGames, and he plays ''TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons'' (and even has large tattoos of a dragon and a wizard on his back and chest).
** His calming down and giving Blake Griffin a "my bad" rub on the head after an accidental shoulder collision? Proof he's a NiceGuy.
** He's also a fan of the marine park "Ride/{{SeaWorld}}". He has visited the park a few times and posted images of him posing with the animals on his social media feed.
* NBA Centers and twin brothers Brook and Robin Lopez are both huge fans of Comics, Disneyland, and Music/MichaelJackson. They can even be found at Comic Con.
* Creator/ShaquilleONeal is a big Franchise/{{Superman}} fan and has a tattoo of Superman's symbol. Presumably, this influenced his decision to do the ''Film/{{Steel}}'' movie.
** He's also a big video game nut, having appeared in ''VideoGame/NBAJam'', ''Videogame/Ready2RumbleBoxing'', ''VideoGame/DeltaForceBlackHawkDown'', and even his own game, ''VideoGame/ShaqFu''.
* Indiana Pacers forward Danny Granger [[http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=37158 is working on a real-life version]] of the Batcave, not to mention graduating with a degree in civil engineering.
* Chris Bosh, most recently of the Miami Heat, is a huge fan of the ''ComicBook/XMen'' and got to voice [[ComicBook/TheMightyThor Heimdall]] on an episode of ''WesternAnimation/HulkAndTheAgentsOfSmash''. Bosh is also an advocate of teaching programming and was by many accounts an excellent high school student.
* Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant is an avid ''VideoGame/AngryBirds'' player.
* Charlotte Hornets small forward Gordon Hayward - notably handsome and good at basketball - plays ''VideoGame/LeagueofLegends'' and blogs about it.
* Jeremy Lin went from a competitive Palo-Alto-area high school to Harvard University and plays ''VideoGame/Dota2'' in his free time.
* The legendary 1969-1973 Knicks squad was made up of a bunch of nerds. To reiterate:
** Bill Bradley, Rhodes Scholar who went to Princeton and eventually a U.S. senator who ran for President.
** Dick Barnett, who now has a Ph.D. from Fordham University.
** Phil Jackson, future Greatest Coach of All Time, who was a peace activist, would-be philosopher, and an avid reader.
** And probably the nerdiest of the bunch, Jerry Lucas, an eccentric who had a photographic memory, was well-known for his love of magic tricks, and even created his own language, which he shared with Bill Bradley (the pair used it to fluster and frustrate defenders on the court, and by all accounts it did its job well).
* Golden State Warriors center Festus Ezeli is a self-proclaimed weeaboo. Among his favorite anime are ''Manga/OnePiece'' and ''Manga/{{Naruto}}''.
* Pau Gasol started medical studies in his hometown of Barcelona before basketball got in the way.[[note]]At the time, he was with the basketball section of FC Barcelona.[[/note]] By that time, he was already fluent in Catalan, Spanish, and English (a not uncommon combination for Barcelona natives of the modern generation), and later taught himself French and Italian.
* Creator/KareemAbdulJabbar, one of the greatest basketball players of all time, is a ''massive'' fan of Franchise/SherlockHolmes, to the point where he's not only read all the original Creator/ArthurConanDoyle novels, but has even written and published a spinoff series starring his brother Mycroft. He claims reading the original Doyle novels helped him in basketball by sharpening his observational skills which lead him to quickly notice opposing player's weak spots.
* Zion Williamson [[https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2022-08-16/zion-williamson-around-80-percent-of-nba-players-are-into-anime/.188696 claimed]] that eighty percent of the NBA players are into anime, including himself who is a ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' fan.

[[AC: Boxers]]
* Canadian heavyweight boxing champion Dillon Carman proudly discussed his skills at chess when he appeared on ''Series/DragonsDen''.
* Creator/MikeTyson was fond of watching ''WesternAnimation/TomAndJerry'' that he would rather [[https://talksport.com/sport/boxing/1009611/mike-tyson-tom-and-jerry-ko-sparring-partner-cartoon/ knock out]] his sparring partner within an hour than miss a simple episode.

[[AC: Cricketers]]
* Former Australian cricket captain and now commentator Bill Lawry got the nickname "ComicStrip/ThePhantom" because he was a huge fan of the character, and kept a stash of Phantom comics in the team locker room.

[[AC: Figure Skaters]]
* Russian figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva is a huge anime fan and especially loves ''Franchise/SailorMoon'', to the point of creating an entire exhibition program based on the titular show and character and wearing the Sailor outfit for the World Team competition in Japan. She would [[PromotedFangirl eventually be cast as Sailor Moon]] for the official ''Sailor Moon'' ice show in 2020. She's also [[https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2016-10-28/real-figure-skaters-endorse-yuri-on-ice/.108197 very public]] about being a fan of ''Anime/YuriOnIce'', which isn't surprising since it's an anime about figure skating.
* Canadian figure skater Kevin Reynolds has [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxuxrZgXhqU a program]] based on ''Anime/CowboyBebop''.
* Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu is a fan of ''Manga/TokyoGhoul''. After winning his second consecutive gold medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, he had a radio interview with Creator/NatsukiHanae (who voices ''Tokyo Ghoul'''s main character Ken Kaneki) which Hanyu was very excited and admittedly nervous about. He's also a huge fan of ''Franchise/{{Digimon}}'', especially ''Anime/DigimonTamers''. He's stated that "Kaze" is his #1 song for moral support before a competition. Digimon card designer Kenji Watanabe even [[https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2018-02-28/digimon-designer-draws-olympic-skating-gold-medalist-hanyu/.128383 drew an image]] of him with Guilmon, Renamon, and Terriermon.
* American ice dancer Joe Johnson is a fan of numerous anime and video games, as evidenced by his Twitter posts. Like many other skaters, he's also a fan of ''Anime/YuriOnIce'', and even went so far as to [[https://68.media.tumblr.com/280572f91e37a0e73affae76926cb8f0/tumblr_ok4cbj6VAK1sjumblo1_1280.jpg suggest]] and later actually [[https://68.media.tumblr.com/5f7d5d4ffe2f90604e4c11343306dce3/tumblr_ok4cbj6VAK1sjumblo2_1280.jpg perform]] Jean-Jacques Leroy's trademark "It's JJ Style!" pose at a televised skating event.

[[AC: Golfers]]
* PGA Tour pro Bryson [=DeChambeau=] runs a Twitch channel under the username thebadeone23. He frequently streams ''Videogame/{{Fortnite}}'' for a small audience and admits to wishing to stream full-time.

[[AC: Gymnasts]]
* At the London 2012 Olympic Games, Mexican gymnast Elsa García Rodríguez Blancas performed her floor routine to ''Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda'' medley. And not just any version: Music/LindseyStirling's [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3KUyPKbR7Q one]].
** Her sister wrote an [[http://kotaku.com/5931798/my-awesome-sister-is-the-zelda-gymnast-and-yes-shes-a-lifelong-gamer article on Kotaku]] not long after explaining her sister's love of Zelda and video games.
* American gymnast Jordan Chiles is a huge fan of Franchise/WonderWoman, and not only [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJb5-ivVjz4 performed]] her floor routine at the 2018 USA Gymnastics Championship to the main theme from the [[Film/WonderWoman2017 2017 film]], but wore a leotard designed to look like the character's famous costume.
* Dutch Olympic team member Celine van Gerner loves ''Theatre/{{Cats}}'' so much that, in addition to wearing an orange tiger-striped leotard, she wore stage makeup modeled after the famous ''Cats'' facial designs and performed her floor routine to music from the show.

[[AC: Hockey players]]
* Anaheim Ducks enforcer George Parros played college hockey at Princeton where he majored in economics and wrote his senior thesis on, get this, the West Coast longshoremen's labor dispute. He also played fantasy hockey and was really into video games (especially ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' and ''Franchise/StreetFighter'') while in college, really likes 80's hair metal, and watches a lot of ''WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy''. Basically, he's the opposite of what one would think an enforcer would be.
* San Jose Sharks winger/defenseman Brent Burns, as noted in [[http://www.battleofcali.com/2012/9/13/3322560/twit-sharks-brent-burns this blog entry on Battle of California]]. He's read through ''Literature/HarryPotter'' (and has a Potter-inspired tattoo on his arm), Literature/TheHungerGames and the Literature/InheritanceCycle; owns [[Series/SesameStreet Elmo]] pajamas and is obsessed with the VideoGame/{{Skylanders}} series. He's even brought his Skylanders figures with him on road trips and tormented his teammates with them.
* Former Tampa Bay Lightning and Anaheim Ducks forward JT Brown, currently of the Minnesota Wild, is a gamer and Twitch streamer when not playing hockey

[[AC:Martial Artists]]
* Josh Barnett, heavyweight MMA fighter, had [[Manga/FistOfTheNorthStar Ai wo Torimodose]] as his entrance theme while he was working in PRIDE. He also made a statement after the match more along the lines of "My Hokuto Shinken will never be as good as Kenshiro's so I have to keep working on my Nanto Seiken." He's also a fan of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zZzZzAuMfA Magic: The Gathering]]
* Lightweight Mixed Martial Artist Joe Lauzon has a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science and used to be a Network Administrator. Also a fanatical ''VideoGame/CallOfDuty'' player.
* MMA fighter Shane Carwin has an engineering degree and continues to work in that field despite being a top ranked heavyweight.
* Kickboxer Yuichiro "Jienotsu" Nagashima is a dangerous opponent to face in a ring. In 2010, he won the "K-1 World MAX 2010 -70kg" tournament with three consecutive knockouts. He is also an extreme cosplay otaku who loves dressing up as female characters from various manga/anime/video games. Oh, and he does this while entering the ring, complete with soundtrack and backup dancers and everything. He has cosplayed characters such as [[Literature/HaruhiSuzumiya Haruhi]], [[VisualNovel/HigurashiWhenTheyCry Rena]], [[VisualNovel/FateStayNight Saber]], [[Franchise/TouhouProject Marisa]], and many more. Of course, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYS-MCYbIlY this has to be seen to be believed]]
* London 2012 judo gold medalist Kaori Matsumoto will be voicing a character in the upcoming ''Anime/DragonBallZ: Battle of Gods'' movie, and commented that she has been a DBZ fan since she was a little girl.
* MMA fighter Creator/RondaRousey [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vl6p9OhJhc really]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MmTk2Gbl2E loves]] ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}''. She put 200 hours into just ''Pokémon Blue'', and has beaten every generation that comes out. Her appearance at Wrestling/{{WWE}} Wrestling/WrestleMania 31 saw her wearing a tank top with a direct reference to the ''Anime/DragonBallZ'' "OVER 9000" meme.

[[AC: Poker Players]]
* Many, many current high-stakes poker players got their start in ''TabletopGame/MagicTheGathering''; David Williams is the most famous of those. Justified in that many of the skills used in ''Magic'' translate very well to poker.
* Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, winner of five World Series of Poker bracelets (including the Main Event in 2000), has a Ph.D. in computer science from UCLA.

[[AC: Professional Skateboarders]]
* Creator/TonyHawk is a longtime fan of Music/NineInchNails and Music/DepecheMode, to the point where he was one of the fans who took over Depeche Mode's Website/{{Facebook}} page in May of 2017 and even got Trent Reznor to send an email to talk about his own love for Depeche Mode. Hawk also occasionally sang vocals for a number of tribute acts who covered music from the ''VideoGame/TonyHawksProSkater'' series. Hawk was also known to be a Commodore user, having bought a C64 just so he could play ''Skate or Die!''; he later bought [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MOcggCf2W8 an Amiga]] which he equipped with "3MB of RAM, 40MB hard drive and an internal modem", something which would've been the late 80s equivalent of having a very high-end PC today. He was also a notable owner of [=NewTek=]'s Video Toaster system, which proved useful when he had to moonlight as a video editor during the time when his livelihood was in dire straits during skateboarding's DorkAge in the early 90s.
* Creator/RodneyMullen, one of Hawk's ''Bones Brigade'' co-stars and a skateboarding pioneer in his own right, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwjlDBjNzXk expressed his enthusiasm]] for Linux and open-source software. He also portrayed Jace Skell in ''VideoGame/GhostReconBreakpoint'' of all places.

[[AC: Rugby Players]]
* Before rugby union went professional in 1995, degreed professionals (doctors, lawyers, accountants, and the like) were disproportionately represented in the international game. Even in the modern era, there are a decent number of top-notch players who have high-end professional qualifications:
** Conrad Smith (New Zealand) and Alun Wyn Jones (Wales) are both lawyers.
** Diego Ormaechea (Uruguay), whose career spanned the transition to professionalism and is also the oldest player to appear in the Rugby World Cup, is a veterinarian.
** Felipe Contepomi (Argentina), Jannie du Plessis (South Africa), and Jamie Roberts (Wales) are all doctors.
* Prop Omar Hasan was a [[{{Pun}} pillar]][[labelnote:*]]The French word for "prop" is "pilier", which translates in English as "pillar"[[/labelnote]] of the Argentinian selection from 1995 and 2007. When he retired in 2008 after a successful career, he became an ''opera singer''.

[[AC:Soccer Players]]
* Argentinian football player (soccer) Sergio "Kun" Agüero of Manchester City. The "kun" isn't an actual part of his name but a nickname he got from his grandparents. This was due to his resemblance to the character "Kum Kum" from his favourite childhood anime [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kum-Kum "Wanpaku Oomukashi Kum Kum"]] made in 1975. He has worn this nickname on his jersey throughout his entire career.
** He also has a tattoo on his arm of his name in [[Literature/TheLordOfTheRings Tengwar]], an Elvish language invented by Creator/JRRTolkien.
* A growing number of the Arsenal squad, most notably Cesc Fàbregas, Theo Walcott, Samir Nasri and Jack Wilshere, are very keen gamers, especially of the ''FIFA'' series. Walcott even joked about what button Fàbregas had pressed to pass to him to set him up to score against Chelsea during a live interview on Sky Sports.
* Wojciech Szczesny, the starting goalkeeper for Juventus and the Polish National Team, could be compared to Wil Wheaton in his nerdiness, except he plays [[UsefulNotes/AssociationFootball professional football]] instead of being an actor. He really likes to be silly with his Website/{{Facebook}} and Website/{{Twitter}} (and now Instagram), and he is a very big fan of the ''Harry Potter'' series. There are also unconfirmed rumors of whether or not he's also a Star Wars fan.
* Jay Demerit, a professional soccer player for Vancouver Whitecaps and an infrequent call-up to the US Men's National Team, is a fan of ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic''.
* Brek Shea of FC Dallas created an MLS Expansion [[http://yfrog.com/khlg2uj team]] out of Franchise/{{Pokemon}}.
* Many soccer players have said that they decided to take up the sport thanks to the anime series ''Manga/CaptainTsubasa''. The list includes Fernando Torres, Hidetoshi Nakata, Alexis Sánchez (who named [[PreciousPuppies one of his Golden Retriever dogs]] "Atom" after Tsubasa's DubNameChange), Lionel Messi, Andrés Iniesta and Alessandro Del Piero.
* Antoine Griezmann, Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Sergi Roberto and Dani Carvajal play ''VideoGame/{{Fortnite}}'', the former two use one of the emotes as a goal celebration, Take the L for Griezmann and Floss for Alli.
* French national team player Ousmane Dembele apparently plays ''VideoGame/FootballManager''.

[[AC:Swimmers]]
* Matt Grevers, six-time Olympic medallist in swimming, also happens to be a committed gamer, and has played titles like ''Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda'', ''VideoGame/{{Diablo}}'', and ''VideoGame/WorldOfWarcraft'', to name a few. His roommate for the London 2012 Olympics, Nathan Adrian, also a swimming medalist, doesn't slack either, collecting knick knacks like remote control helicopters and night vision goggles.
* Japanese swimmer Satomi Suzuki (winner of a silver medal for the 200m breaststroke and bronze for the 100m breaststroke at the London 2012 Olympics) wants to become a voice actress.

[[AC:Tennis players]]
