1	* During the Cold War, American soldiers and their families living overseas often had to put up with this. Generally Creator/AmericanForcesNetwork stations were only allowed to broadcast shows after they had already aired in the local market, which meant AFN stations were three to five years behind on many shows. The exceptions were generally syndicated shows that held little interest for foreign viewers. Children's programming, apart from PBS shows, were sometimes decades out of date -- and if the budget was tight, they might buy the rights to Canadian cartoons from the 1950s, shows that would (and should) fall under this trope. Modern AFN is reportedly much improved.
2	** The AFN television station on Okinawa is an excellent example. During the mid-1970s, for instance, that station mostly ran reruns of programs that had broadcast in the U.S. a season or so previously during prime time, and old movies during most of the rest of the day. Children's programming tended toward PBS shows like ''Series/SesameStreet'' and ''Series/TheElectricCompany1971'', as noted above, and VERY old cartoons.
3	** It still happens today, mainly with the [=AFN=] Family channel:
4	*** After they premiered ''WesternAnimation/SagwaTheChineseSiameseCat'', they stopped bringing in new Creator/PBSKids shows to their service for reasons unknown, meaning those who were living on military bases missed a good chunk of the network's shows from the mid-2000's to TheNewTens. Even newer seasons of shows that had been continuing on mainland PBS stations, such as ''WesternAnimation/{{Arthur}}'', were never aired on AFN Family save for ''Series/SesameStreet'', with the network removing the shows off the schedule instead. The only PBS Kids shows so far to premiere post-''Sagwa'' were ''WesternAnimation/TheCatInTheHatKnowsALotAboutThat'' in 2010 and ''WesternAnimation/HeroElementary'' in 2021.
5	*** No Creator/CartoonNetwork originals have been broadcast on AFN since ''WesternAnimation/ThePowerpuffGirls'', though the network's acquired programming (such as ''WesternAnimation/TeenTitansGo'') still continues to air.
6	*** For several years, they only showed the first four seasons of ''WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants'' and didn't air anything past the first season of ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'' except for the Equestria Girls films.
7	** A very similar situation to AFN happens with U.S. territories that are not considered part of the mainland like Guam, the Virgin Islands, as well as island territories such as Bermuda. They will only get 4 or 5 channels at the maximum (usually PBS, TBN and three other channels, with one of them usually being the aformentioned AFN), and some of the territories do not get networks common across the mainland. For example, the Virgin Islands do not have Creator/{{ABC}}, Creator/{{CBS}} and Creator/{{FOX}} only exist as digital subchannels in Guam, and Bermuda gets the short end of the stick, having only two channels: CBS and ABC. The "shows being several years behind" problem also happens with said PBS affiliates airing older shows not aired in years on mainland affiliates: for example, ''Series/TheNoddyShop'' ran until 2004 on KGTF (Guam's affiliate), while ''Series/ShiningTimeStation'' ran until 2001 on WTJX (the Virgin Islands' affiliate). Like AFN, the stations both improved and most of their programming is up-to-date as of August 2019.
8	* 3/5's of the world will probably never know what those Europeans and Americans are talking about when referring to ''Creator/MontyPython''.
9	** And Americans are ''just lucky'' to not be part of that group. According to Website/TheOtherWiki, the Pythons didn't think their humor was exportable at all; it was only because an executive at a single PBS station happened upon some episodes, liked it, and had the show put on his station that America was exposed to the ''Flying Circus'' and later movies. (One reason for the Pythons being hesitant is because ''Series/MontyPythonsFlyingCircus'' had been subjected to a BadExportForYou scenario in the early 1970s when the American commercial network ABC broadcasted several episodes as a special, but in highly censored form.)
10	** Although they are popular in some parts of Latin America, but specially because of the movies (the series was never exported or dubbed).
11	* ''Series/{{QI}}'' hasn't been seen in the United States (legally) due to the enormous cost of licensing all the images and sounds they use on the show. While you can get the first three series on Region 2 DVD from a few sources, it only works if you have a Region 2 or regionless DVD player. This only changed when BBC America started showing it in 2015.
12	* After two series of a German dub of the ''Series/DoctorWho'' revived series had passed without anyone noticing, the show was cancelled with the network announcing that they had no intention on ever picking it up again. Odd, considering its spinoff show ''Series/{{Torchwood}}'' continues to air in Germany, leaving an unexplained gap between its first and second series. ''Doctor Who'' was not picked up again until Creator/MattSmith's first season.
13	** [[Recap/DoctorWhoTVMTheTVMovie The TV Movie]]. Due to conflicting rights and legal issues between the BBC and Universal, the 2001 DVD was not released in the US or Australia (Australia got it on VHS, however). Come 2011, and the DVD was finally released to those countries - one of which was the ''country of origin for the production'' - 15 years after the film aired!
14	** BBC Worldwide's Asia arm has never been good with the specials (Easter specials are outright skipped over, while other specials are chosen at its own discretion, irrelevant of the interest shown on social media). However, most egregiously, "[[Recap/DoctorWho2013CSTheTimeOfTheDoctor The Time of The Doctor]]" was skipped over back in 2013, and this special is important as it showcases the regeneration of Matt Smith to Creator/PeterCapaldi, and regenerations are extremely important events to Whovians. [[http://www.bbc-asia.com/contact/?page=3 Many have written to the BBC]], who claims that they have noted the interest of Asian viewers in the episode, but have announced that it will not be aired in the near future. [[BadExportForYou It finally aired in mid-Febuary 2015, during Chinese New Year and over a year after it's premiere in other regions]], but BBC Entertainment Asia will still hand pick which specials it will and will not show in the future. And oh, the pre-2005 episodes have never been aired on BBC Asia's feeds, either.
15	** In December 2009, Astro Malaysia dropped BBC Entertainment Asia from their network, halfway through a Series 4 repeat airing of the show. The provider's excuse was that the channel offered nothing new, although many viewers suspected it had something to do with Jeremy Clarkson dissing and subsequently destroying a ''Perodua Kancil'', one of the two national cars, on ''Series/TopGear'' a few weeks prior. This move denied Malaysian Whovians off ''Doctor Who'' until 2012, when BBC Entertainment once again became available, this time over a different provider. However, in December 2015, the other provider chose to drop the network. The biggest kick in the groin was that the provider dropped the channel halfway through Season 9 of ''Doctor Who'', right before the season finale three parter. The story has a happy ending, however- Netflix picked up the show in June 2016 and season 9 became available in September of that year, and BBC First finally launched on [=HyppTV=] in October 2016, with the remainder of Season 9 as one of it's launch titles.[[note]]As it turned out, BBC Worldwide was planning to discontinue the BBC Entertainment Asia brand in the region in favor of launching BBC First, a provider-centric VOD service, and had chose to not allow providers to renew their contracts, instead working with providers to integrate the VOD service into their system, with the goal of switching all providers over to BBC First and then shutting down the BBC Entertainment Asia feed by April 2017.[[/note]]
16	** Unless you could receive BBC in Ireland, it was impossible to watch ''Doctor Who''. Creator/{{RTE}} never showed it, despite buying a run of Creator/JonPertwee episodes in 1980 and airing ''Series/BlakesSeven'', various Creator/{{ITV}} sci-fi series from ''Catweazle'' to ''Into The Labyrinth'', BBC series as varied as ''The Good Old Days'', but officially not until Creator/TG4 aired some Pertwee stories in 1999, did it get a proper airing here. The series' bad luck in Ireland continued into the current century - [=TV3=] ran only Series 1, then dropped it right before it became truly massive in the UK. When it was announced for worldwide release on Creator/Disney+ in 2023, it was with the sole exception of Britain and Ireland, thanks to an old exclusivity deal with Sky. It's fine in Britain, where it's easily available on the [=iPlayer=], but in Ireland it's therefore not available at all.
17	* Think it's bad being an English-speaking anime fan outside the US? Multiply it, and that's being a {{toku}}satsu fan outside of Japan.
18	** There are also no signs of any toku series being released in America in their original, unadapted forms. Some exceptions: ''Film/KamenRiderTheFirst'' (a movie, not a show) was released in North America in 2007 under the name ''Masked Rider: The First''; to date, it is the only subtitled Japanese {{Toku}}satsu that was widely available in American stores. But not UK ones. There have also been box sets put out for series like ''Series/KamenRiderV3'' and ''Series/{{Kikaider}}'', made for the Hawaiian market and thus not widely available; they are, however, sold on the Internet, with Kikaider's being under the title ''Kikaida''. Japanese ''[[Series/SpiderManJapan Spider-Man]]'' was streamed on {{Creator/Marvel}}'s website for a while before being taken down in a redesign, Sentai shows from ''Series/ChikyuuSentaiFiveman'' to ''Series/BakuryuuSentaiAbaranger'' got official DVD releases by Creator/ShoutFactory, ''Series/KamenRiderAmazons'' and ''Series/KamenRiderBlackSun'', on the US Amazon Prime Video service (with the former under the name ''[[MarketBasedTitle Amazon Riders]]'' and the latter needing a special link to watch it), [[Series/KamenRider the first Kamen Rider series]], ''Series/KamenRiderKuuga'', ''Series/KamenRiderRyuki'', and ''Film/KamenRiderHeiseiGenerationsFOREVER'', also through Shout! Factory for US and Canada (With ''Series/KamenRiderZeroOne'' also getting a physical home video release also via Shout), ''Series/KamenRiderAgito'' and ''Series/KamenRider555'' via TOKU (albeit with really bad subs).
19	*** Despite the Sentai shows getting DVD releases for the US, the movies and crossover specials still stay in Japan, due to these being separate deals from the show proper. Sentai shows are also still NEFY anywhere else in the English-speaking world.
20	*** After Hasbro got the reins of the Power Rangers franchise, Sentai shows from ''Series/BakuryuuSentaiAbaranger'' onward as well as ''Series/ChikyuuSentaiFiveman'' backward are currently under this trope as Creator/ShoutFactory has not gotten the go ahead yet from Hasbro to resume sales of the other seasons, but recently averted after Hasbro bought Entertainment One to handle the aforementioned titles.
21	*** The second American adaptation of ''Kamen Rider'', ''Series/KamenRiderDragonKnight'', is an odd inversion — despite airing the majority of its episodes on American TV[[note]]save for the last two, which would've aired had it not been for the rule the CW has regarding renewing shows, although they were posted online[[/note]], the series never got a DVD release stateside, likely due to the series bombing in the ratings. And with the episodes that were uploaded online being taken down, the only ways to watch it are to either get hold of a DVD that was released outside (if you want to watch it legally) or use illicit streaming services.
22	** There's at least one market where toku [=DVDs=] are available: Brazil, where a few ''Franchise/SuperSentai'' and ''Series/MetalHeroes'' series [[GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff were wildly popular]], some even streamed on the Brazilian Netflix to boot.
23	** Tokusatsu programming has a moderately large following in certain areas in Asia outside of Japan as well, so long as you're willing to accept episodes that are dubbed into the local language. Video releases are aplenty (depending on where you plan to visit, they're dubbed into Malay, Mandarin or Cantonese respectively), toys are aplenty (beware the knockoffs tho) and they even air it regularly on national TV in the countries. Just expect to get [[WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids strange looks]] from the cashier when you try to buy merchandise.
24	** The Philippines used to air Franchise/SuperSentai until the early 2000's, the last series being Series/ChoujinSentaiJetman. Now, Super Sentai is this in the Philippines, due to Franchise/PowerRangers. One of the reasons? Someone said before that Power Rangers was cheaper to buy and license in the country than Super Sentai, yet that doesn't stop them for getting some Heisei-era Kamen Rider shows locally.
25	** Actually, this is also true in Malaysia — the last Super Sentai series to air on Malaysian TV was also ''Jetman''. After that, [=RTM-TV1=] switched over to Power Rangers and thus the US continuity. To be fair though, Power Rangers was lower effort to import since they don't have to dub it[[note]]English shows are rarely dubbed into Malay in Malaysia until the turn of the millennium, when the country's nationalist faction started becoming vocal. Traditionally, all toku shows that are imported direct from Japan to air in Malaysia are subjected to a Malay HongKongDub[[/note]], but the fact that Saban was lowballing the licensing price could also be another reason.
26	** South Korea, which does dub Sentai (albeit [[CompletelyDifferentTitle under the name of]] ''Franchise/PowerRangers'') never received a dub of ''Series/SamuraiSentaiShinkenger'', purportedly for being too Japanese. [[MarthDebutedInSmashBros They eventually appeared]] in the dubs of ''Series/KamenRiderDecade'' and ''Series/KaizokuSentaiGokaiger''. One show did avert this: a dub of ''Series/ShurikenSentaiNinninger'' got through Korean airwaves as ''[[MarketBasedTitle Power Rangers Ninja Force]]''.
27	*** ''Shinkenger'' isn't the only case where this has happened; this fate also befell ''Series/KamenRiderGaim'' and ''Series/PowerRangersNinjaStorm'', albeit for a different reason for the latter[[note]]after ''Wild Force'', South Korea opted to stop importing ''Power Rangers'' and just dub the Sentai, due to it being cheaper to just dub Sentai than to import [=PR=] (which ironically the opposite of what the Philippines did above); because Sentai was a year ahead, they went from ''Wild Force'' to what was the current Sentai, ''Series/BakuryuuSentaiAbaranger''[[/note]]. Oddly enough, when ''Shinkenger'' was skipped, instead of dubbing ''Hurricanger'' in it's place[[note]]presumably, Ninjas are much less taboo in South Korea than Samurai, because ''Naruto'' airs in South Korea without any difficulty[[/note]], they instead chose to air a dub of ''Series/HyakujuuSentaiGaoranger'', despite the fact that ''Series/PowerRangersWildForce'' was already dubbed.
28	** ''Series/HikoninSentaiAkibaranger'' has English subs on Bandai's own Website/YouTube channel... but they're only available to certain Asian countries.
29	** ''Series/StarFleet'' was dubbed in English and shown on UK TV during most of the '80s before disappearing from the air with very scarce cut-up VHS releases. However after many years of fan devotion, the show was released on DVD in the UK and Australia, however not in the US. The DVD distributor has stated that there is no audience for a DVD release in the US. This is simply not true as while the show did not air there, 8 VHS tapes of the series were released and were most often subject [[KeepCirculatingtheTapes to being put on a fan archive]] online. Fortunately, Creator/DiscotekMedia plans to release the series (albeit dub only) in the US in December 2016.
30	** ''Series/TensouSentaiGoseiger'' was skipped in Taiwan and Hong Kong for some reason (Either because of the angel theme or that they knew fans won't like it). Instead the channels that air ''Franchise/SuperSentai'' in those countries went straight from ''Series/SamuraiSentaiShinkenger'' to ''Series/KaizokuSentaiGokaiger''.
31	** ''Series/ChoudenshiBioman'' and a couple of other Sentai shows were released in France, where they apparently have a cult following.
32	** ''Series/MadanSenkiRyukendo'' however is an aversion; it was aired, in all places, in ''Puerto Rico'', on a Telemundo affiliate there! It also got a Latin American airing too in some countries in that region.
33	** Unless you consider ''Mega Mindy'', which is made by the Belgian company Studio 100, to be this, tokusatsu has never ever aired in Belgium.
34	** Tokusatsu is completely unknown in Hungary, as the only related productions that have ever seen airtime are a handful of random ''Franchise/PowerRangers'' series, such as ''Series/MightyMorphinPowerRangers'', ''Series/PowerRangersMysticForce'' and ''Series/PowerRangersSamurai''.
35	** Partially averted in regards to the ''Franchise/UltraSeries'', despite suffering from a lengthy dispute over its distribution rights until 2017 between creators Creator/TsuburayaProductions and the Thai company Chaiyo. While there are a number of series yet to be released in the United States, 13 entire installments have been licensed in the US. Shout! Factory has released DVD sets of ''Series/UltraQ'' and ''Series/UltraSeven'' in the past (Now out of print due to Chaiyo's involvement and Mill Creek later releasing the series on Blu-Ray and DVD), Mill Creek has complete volume and box set releases of ''Series/{{Ultraman}}'' (And later getting Remastered Blu-Ray editions of that and ''Ultra Q'' as complete boxsets released on October 2019), and Crunchyroll has streaming rights to ''Series/UltramanEighty'', ''Series/UltramanGaia'', ''Series/UltramanGinga'', ''Series/UltramanLeo'', ''Series/UltramanMax'', ''Series/UltramanMebius'', ''Series/UltramanNexus'', ''Series/UltramanX'', ''Series/UltramanOrb'', and ''Series/UltramanGeed''.
36	*** ''Series/{{Ultraman}}'', ''Series/{{Ultraseven}}'', ''Series/UltramanTiga'', and ''Series/UltramanMax'' have all received English dubs that have aired on television at some point, albeit with varying degrees of quality. Also the ''Series/UltramanGinga S'' and ''Series/UltramanX'' movies were given limited release dubs by the folks behind the ''Max'' dub, with the only movie to ever get one prior to that was ''Film/UltramanTheNext''. And in 2017, the Toku Network added many never-before-seen-in-America series to its schedules, including ''Series/UltraGalaxyMegaMonsterBattle'', ''Series/UltramanNeos'', and ''Series/UltrasevenX'', as well as the first non-adaption airing of ''Series/DenkouChoujinGridman'' too.
37	*** Sadly played straight with ''Series/UltramanRB'', as Tsuburaya Productions only allowed the series to be streamed in Asia through their Website/YouTube channel, but not in the West, as they are now finding a way to stream it outside of Asia without Crunchyroll's involvement. Later averted with Mill Creek's release of not just the series, but also the movie on Blu-Ray and DVD in the US.
38	*** In the US, it's finally fully averted thanks to Mill Creek! All Ultraman media are coming out on Blu-Ray and DVD.
39	*** And of course, starting with ''Series/UltramanZ'', ''Series/UltraGalaxyFightNewGenerationHeroes'' and '' Series/UltraGalaxyFightTheAbsoluteConspiracy'', newer Ultraman series and specials became available to most of the world through the official Ultraman [=YouTube=] Channel, with the last two even having optional English dub versions, and the newer series streamed there even have subtitles for other languages (Asian languages only; for Europe, see below).
40	*** But alas, this is still--as of 2024--played straight in Europe (specifically mainland Europe). The lack of attempts to export the series to Europe is not solely due to the general unpopularity of tokusatsu in the region, but also because of potential licensing and distribution challenges. Not to mention, there are a lot of spoken languages in Europe[[note]]UsefulNotes/TheEuropeanUnion has 24 official languages; while Tsuburaya Productions has provided subtitles in 3 of the 24 languages: English, Spanish, and Portuguese, this primarily serves English-speaking audiences worldwide and Latin American viewers, respectively[[/note]]; in Asia, where there is also a multitude of languages, Tsuburaya Productions supplies subtitles in numerous Asian languages owing to the widespread popularity of ''Ultraman'' there. However, achieving full localization of the ''Ultra Series'' for Europe would require addressing the vast array of European languages, which may not be economically feasible for the producers.
41	** Three Kamen Rider shows- ''Series/KamenRiderFourze'', ''Series/KamenRiderWizard'' and ''Series/KamenRiderGhost''- did air in the US, but only through the TV Japan channel (A North American channel made by Creator/{{NHK}}), and with no English subtitles. Not to mention TV Japan is only available in select providers in the US (and even then, it's expensive to get that channel due to it being the only Japanese-language channel in the US and the only one in the "Japanese" tier in the said providers, to the point the [=DirecTV=] doesn't even carry it!).
42	** Of the big 4, the ''Series/MetalHeroes'' series has it the worst, since ''none'' of it's series have been exported in any form (unless you count ''VR Troopers'' and ''Beetleborgs'')... until August 2018, when Discotek Media licensed ''Series/KyojuuTokusouJuspion'' for a US release.
43	** ''Series/BIMASatriaGaruda'', Indonesia's first original tokusatsu series, has yet to be released outside it's native country. If you're a Bima fan from outside Indonesia, it must suck to be you. This also applies to the rest of the ''Satria'' sequels.
44	** The ''Series/KamenRiderZiO'' movies- ''Film/KamenRiderHeiseiGenerationsFOREVER'', ''Film/KamenRiderZiOOverQuartzer'' and ''Film/KamenRiderReiwaTheFirstGeneration'', averted their trope status in the first four South East Asian countries (Singapore, Malaysia & Indonesia, all three with the same distributor and Thailand with its own dub)... except for the Philippines. Pinoy Kamen Rider fans are not amused.
45	*** Semi averted for the Philippines at least for one day (as part of Team Kamen Rider's Rider Week) for ''The First Generation'' in April 2021 via the Toei Tokusatsu World [=YouTube=] channel! If you missed it that day and you're a Pinoy Kamen Rider fan, looks like you're out of luck.
46	*** On the topic of the Toei Tokukatsu World Youtube Channel, if you live in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand or Indonesia, you can forget about watching the last few Heisei era riders and Reiwa riders on that channel. Those videos are blocked because of said regional distributor[[note]]Monsta PLC, who owns Animonsta Studios, who produces Animation/BoBoiBoy[[/note]]. You're expected to watch [[BadExportForYou a version that is totally censored to meet the Malaysian governments' taste]] on Monsta's channel instead, with the expected [[LateExportForYou delays]].
47	* ''Franchise/PowerRangers'', ''Series/VRTroopers'', and ''Series/{{Beetleborgs}}'' have been released on Netflix. People celebrated -- until Europeans (sans [=UK=] and Ireland) and Australians realized that Netflix is only available in America and Canada and [=UK=] and Ireland. [[KeepCirculatingTheTapes And there are no DVD box-sets]]. Though Germany has a new MMPR box set.
48	** Also, the Canadian selection of Netflix titles differs from in the US; As of this writing, no ''Beetleborgs'', no ''VR Troopers'', and only up to ''Series/PowerRangersLightspeedRescue'' (And neither of the movies) for ''Power Rangers''.
49	** South Korea actually never imported ''Series/PowerRangersNinjaStorm''-onwards, skipping to Super Sentai as mentioned above. Although you can figure out a WhatCouldHaveBeen if they have did a dub of Megaforce with this fan-made [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JN8YqKRbhas Korean Megaforce opening]] (Although no translated opening in the said language)...
50	** For some reason, Power Rangers skipped adapting Go-Busters (at first) and went straight to Kyoryuger, as well as [=ToQger=] straight to Ninninger.
51	** In 2016, Netflix announced that they're going worldwide. The fans cheered... Then found those shows nowhere on Netflix in their regions. Turns out that the show isn't available on Netflix in all countries due to contractual obligations with Saban, as the countries covered by the contract only included those that Netflix already operated in and not future markets.
52	** While ''Series/{{Garo}}'' aired in parts of Europe, attempts by former ''Franchise/PowerRangers'' producer Creator/TonyOliver to bring it to American shores were met with Tohokushinsha asking for way too much money, a sum that would have required a TV deal and, therefore, a dub. Garo was so ultra-violent that it aired at midnight in Japan, and the idea of a transforming hero was so closely associated with PR that it wasn't gonna work out. It took until after the Garo anime came over for Switchblade Pictures to license the show, at which point it morphed into NoDubForYou.
53	* Despite the fact there's an English dub of ''Series/{{Violetta}}'' (Complete with Creator/CristinaValenzuela dubbing the lead character), it has yet to air on the US Disney Channel. The dub of the show did air on the South East Asian feed though. One of the few reasons might be because of its TeenDrama nature, which would look out of place on the US channel's KidCom- laden shows (At least until the arrival of ''Series/AndiMack''). The only way to work it around is to 1) do a US remake of the show like Nickelodeon did with ''Grachi'' (as Series/EveryWitchWay), or 2) air it on a US Spanish channel w/o the dub, as Azteca America aired the show there in the original Spanish audio back in Sept. 2014, the latter falling in the NoDubForYou trope, in a similar case to the North American airings of ''Anime/PowerpuffGirlsZ'' and ''Anime/AshitaNoNadja''. Ironically, other shows made by the UK branch of Disney (which dubbed Violetta), including Henry Hugglemonster and [[PeripheryHatedom the widely despised short series]] Nina Needs To Go have hit the airwaves, but not this one.
54	** Finally averted in the US, if you have Netflix: The dub of the first 2 seasons can be watched there since July 10th, with the third season following after, and also available in sub form as well (also on the service) if you wish to watch the show in the original Spanish. Also was later added to [=Disney+=], but without the dub.
55	** Japan also don't get this show either, despite it based on music and music idols. Then again, some Latin American dramas (both for adults and the youth, which in the latter Violetta is under) are no shows in the land of the rising sun, despite having a channel dedicated to them dubbed in Japanese.
