Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr. (born October 20, 1971), better known as Snoop Dogg, is an American rapper, record producer and actor. One of Music/DrDre's most popular discoveries, he is known for his smooth, laidback vocal delivery, lyrics that champion marijuana and feature over-the-top depictions of gang life and violence, and popularizing the slang term "izzle" (i.e. "fo' shizzle, my nizzle")The term was introduced to hip-hop by the rapper E-40, however. His stage name comes from a nickname used by his parents, because they thought he resembled Snoopy the dog from Franchise/Peanuts.

Snoop made a huge impact on HipHop fans as a contributor to Dre's classic album Music/TheChronic, and soon released his debut solo album, Doggystyle, the following year. After being cleared of charges over his bodyguard's 1993 murder of Philip Woldemariam, he switched from Creator/DeathRowRecords to No Limit Records in 1996, then to Priority in 2002, and Geffen in 2004. Between 2003 and 2004, he actually was, no joke, a professional pimp, which carried over to his music persona. In 2009, he became chairman of Priority Records.

Snoop has also branched out into other genres under different monikers. While he keeps Snoop Dogg as his hip-hop moniker, he released a reggae album as Snoop Lion, a techno album as DJ Snoopadelic, and adopted the name Snoopzilla to make a funk group with Dâm-Funk called 7 Days of Funk, which released a self-titled album.

In film, he had starring roles in Film/2001, Film/StarskyAndHutch, Film/HoodOfHorror, and Film/DayShift, as well as cameos in assorted TV shows (including WesternAnimation/KingOfTheHill, Series/Monk, WesternAnimation/TheBoondocks, Series/Weeds, WesternAnimation/AskTheStorybots, WesternAnimation/Futurama, and Series/TrailerParkBoys) and other movies. He also directed four pornographic movies and a Girls Gone Wild video.

Snoop Dogg has also grown notable for just how prolific he is. He's said that he'll appear in just about anything and give his professional best as long as he gets paid. He also loves working with friends and people he respects artistically for the chance to collaborate and hang out.

To that end, people he's collaborated with include, but are not limited to, B-Real, Bow Wow, Music/InsaneClownPosse, Music/PharrellWilliams, Music/LimpBizkit, Music/Rapper, Music/Robyn, Music/Gorillaz, Music/BigTimeRush, Music/KatyPerry, Music/WizKhalifa, Music/TheChainsmokers, Music/PSY, Music/The Black Eyed Peas and Music/JasonDerulo. He also played Moses on WebVideo/EpicRapBattlesOfHistory, did a song for Tekken Tag Tournament 2, and has also been hosting and executive-producing a revival of the game show Series/TheJokersWild for Creator/TBS. He even co-hosted the 2021 Series/PuppyBowl with good friend Martha Stewart. Also, all of this isn't counting the numerous commercials he's done as himself, or his appearances in video games.

Snoop also has several famous relatives; Wrestling/SashaBanks, Nate Dogg, and Daz Dillinger are among his cousins. With Sasha Banks being a professional wrestler, he was inducted into the celebrity wing of the Wrestling/WWEHallOfFame in 2016 and rapped Banks to the ring at that year's Wrestling/WrestleMania.

!!"Troping down the street smoking indo sipping on gin and juice":
* ArtifactTitle: The "Snoop" in his stage name refers to Snoopy. When he briefly changed his name from "Snoop Dogg" to "Snoop Lion," the "Snoop" part became an artifact for that period.
* ArtisticLicenseMusic: The music video for "Sensual Seduction (Sexual Eruption)" features Snoop Dogg playing a talk-box keytar, while the vocal effect used in the song is AutoTune instead of the effect of the talk-box.
* AsHimself: In Film/OldSchool, Series/Weeds, Film/Bruno2009, , and WesternAnimation/TheSpongeBobMovieSpongeOnTheRun. Most of his characters in film and TV are also very close to his real life and music persona.
** He also plays himself in the soap opera, Series/OneLifeToLive. Apparently, he's a fan of the show (among other seemingly contradictory interests).
* AutoTune: In "Sexual Eruption". See ArtisticLicenseMusic above for more information.
* BadassBoast: His 2016 album's opener, Legend. Goes straight into LargeHam territory as well.
** From All I Do is Win: "I've been running this rap game since I was 20 years old"
* TheBigGuy: He's 6'4 and often towers over those he works with.
* BigGood: He is considered to be this in the Hip-Hop world. Being that he is one of Rap's most respected artists, he often uses his influence to settle disputes among other rappers and to unite the Hip-hop community towards various causes.
* CountryRap: The song "My Medicine", produced by Everlast, and featuring Music/WillieNelson. After that, a straight-up Country Song, "Superman" (with both Willie and Snoop singing, and Willie playing guitar/harmonica) appeared on his album, Doggumentary.
* DealWithTheDevil: "Murder Was the Case", a song about a fictionalized version of Snoop selling his soul to the Devil for a second (and better) chance at life after being gunned down in the street.
* DownerEnding: The conclusion of "Murder Was the Case". [[spoiler: After allowing the Devil to grant him eternal life and all of the things he wants (and living a life of excess as a result), said life descends into tragedy when Snoop ends up with 25 years in a jail where several people recognize him and a potential gang war may erupt just from him being there. If that weren't enough, the son he mentions at the beginning of the song (whose birth is one of the reasons he wanted a second chance at life to begin with) gets stabbed in the neck while he's inside, possibly ending the poor kid's life before he could make it to age 22.]] For a guy whose specialty is laid-back party music, Snoop wrote one hell of a TearJerker with this one.
* GFunk: A pioneer of the sound, thanks to his heavy presence on Dr. Dre's Music/TheChronic, and his Dre-produced solo debut, Doggystyle. Snoop is also cousins with Warren G, another notable G-funk producer and rapper from the same era.
* GagDub: His "Plizzanet Earth" segments on Series/JimmyKimmelLive of segments from Creator/BBC's Series/PlanetEarth.
* GangstaRap: The Type 3 variety. It helps that Mr. Broadus Jr. is a Crip.
* Horrorcore: A few of his songs border on this, and he has even recorded out-and-out horror-oriented songs, including "Murder Was the Case", where he dies and is brought back to life by Satan, and the Bones and Hood of Horror soundtracks.
* GospelChoirsAreJustBetter: Yes, Snoop Dogg has recorded a completely serious GospelMusic album, believe it or not-- Bible of Love, released in 2018. It got very good reviews, although some MoralGuardians raised questions about his lifestyle being appropriate to a religious message.
* HiddenDepths: Has also authored a cook book.
* IHaveManyNames: His full stage name was originally Snoop Doggy Dogg, and he is credited as Snoop Scorsese for directing one of his porno movies (Michael Corleone is another porn directing alias). "Snoop" is also easier than calling him Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr. In 2012 he decided to make a Reggae album as Snoop Lion. He also uses the name Snoopzilla for a funk album with Dâm-Funk, and DJ Snoopadelic for a techno album.
* Improv: Snoop is very good at freestyling lyrics. According to Music/TheDOC, all of "The Shiznit" from Doggystyle is freestyled:
-->The D.O.C.: The song was "Tha Shiznit" — that was all freestyle. He started busting and when we got to the break, Dre cut the machine off, did the chorus and told Snoop to come back in. He did that throughout the record. That's when Snoop was in the zone then.
* LargeHam: Especially in his 2016 album's opener Legend.
* LighterAndSofter: After the controversial Doggystyle, Snoop toned it down a bit for his next album, Tha Doggfather, saying that he wanted to appeal to a wider audience and have a more positive image. Sadly, Doggfather is considered the inferior album by far.
** In regards to his overall image, he zig-zags through both. He still plays up the thug image and he's usually portrayed as having a huge smoke cloud hanging over his head wherever he goes, but at the same time, he's started coaching a little league football team and appeared on Big Time Rush, a Nickelodeon kid's show. It's really amazing that he's able to balance the two at all.
* MelodicRap: One of the originators, alongside longtime friend Warren G and cousin Nate Dogg, though he rarely uses his melodic flow in a song nonstop.
* MindScrew: Snoop leading an army of gummy bears in a Music/KatyPerry music video.
* TheMovie: Murder Was the Case, an expansion of his song of the same name.
* OddFriendship: Has a very famous one with Martha Stewart, of all people.
* OlderThanHeLooks: He honestly doesn't look much older now than when he first got famous over 20 years ago. To add on to this, he also hasn't gain a single pound since then as well.
* OutOfGenreExperience: Snoop has dabbled in a wide variety of genres, but probably the one that raised the most eyebrows so far was his 2018 album Bible of Love, a completely serious GospelMusic album with an EnsembleCast of Christian music stars. It got predictably perplexed reviews but made it to #1 on the Gospel charts.
** RealMenLoveJesus: His reason for making said album, according to interviews.
* PrisonersLastMeal: His fifth album is titled Tha Last Meal, as a reference to it being his last album partially owned by his former record label, Death Row Records. The album artwork depicts the dog-faced caricature from the cover of Snoop's first album, Doggystyle, behind bars while a priest delivers the last rites and a prison guard brings him a tray of dog food.
* RapMetal: His take on Music/Metallica's "Sad But True".
* RatedGForGangsta: He's been in a few movies aimed at younger audiences, and was actually cut out of a Muppet movie because of his pornographic video release.
* Sampling: Frequent in his music.
** The main chorus melody of "Tha Shiznit" is actually the lead guitar riff of Music/BillyJoel's "The Stranger".
** "Serial Killa" borrows its high-pitched keyboard from "Funky Worm" by The Ohio Players.
** "Gz and Hustlas"' backing music is lifted from Bernard Wright's "Haboglabotribin'". (Yes, everything from the opening toy piano to the main instrumentation is Wright's.)
** "Who Am I (What's My Name)?" samples Music/GeorgeClinton's "Atomic Dog", "P. Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)" and "Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker)" by Parliament. If "G-Funk bingo" was a thing, this song would surely be a winner.
** "La La La" samples from Ken Boothe's "Artibella".
* SirSwearsALot: His raps are peppered with curse words.
* SoulBrotha: Just look at him back in his prime.
* TheStoner: Especially notable since he makes absolutely no effort to hide it, and for the most part really doesn't seem to care. He even has his own line of cannabis products. His reputation as such has gone to the level of fellow weed smoker Music/WillieNelson, or Music/KeithRichards with every other substance.
* SmokingIsCool: "SMOKE WEED EVERY DAY!"Though it was actually Nate Dogg who made this line memetic.
* ThrowingOutTheScript: In an episode of Series/SaturdayNightLive, he played a character that was supposed to lose a rap battle to Kenan Thompson's character but then decided that he didn't want to lose and schooled Kenan.
* WolverinePublicity: Very guilty of this. Snoop is one of the most heavily-featured rap artists ever.
** There is a good reason why so many younger artists call him Uncle Snoop.
* Trumplica: The music video for "Lavender (Nightfall Remix)" features "Ronald Klump", who is depicted as a CorruptCorporateExecutive wanting to deport the "doggs", a reference to his zero-tolerance immigration policy. The video attracted controversy for a scene in which Snoop Dogg's character fires a BangFlagGun at Klump, with Trump and other Republicans accusing Snoop Dogg of inciting violence against Trump, by then already the US President, with Snoop Dogg outright being interviewed by the Secret Service following the video's release. Most prominent figures in the rap community, meanwhile, sided with Snoop Dogg, stating that the video's imagery was no different from statements previously made by political hip-hop artists like Music/PublicEnemy and Music/KRSOne in past decades.
