Miley Ray Cyrus (born Destiny Hope Cyrus on November 23, 1992) is an American singer-songwriter and actress. She rose to prominence as a TeenIdol, best known as the star of the Creator/DisneyChannel KidCom ''Series/HannahMontana''. She has received acclaim for her musical versatility and stylistic reinventions, to the extent of being dubbed a "pop chameleon", and has sold an estimated 20 million albums worldwide to date. She is also the daughter of country musician Music/BillyRayCyrus.

As the star of ''Hannah Montana'', {{Creator/Disney}} [[CashCowFranchise built an entire franchise around her]] with great results, arguably propelling her to the top of the TeenIdol heap. Along with the show, she also performed live as Hannah Montana and soon after embarked on her own solo music and acting career. Among her main musical inspirations are Music/BritneySpears, Music/PatBenatar, Music/JoanJett, Music/StevieNicks and Music/HilaryDuff, the lattermost being cited by Miley as why she began singing and acting in the first place.

Although her music started out in a teen-friendly pop rock sound not dissimilar to her Disney character, she began presenting a more mature image with her third album, 2010's ''Can't Be Tamed'', to mixed results. Following a hiatus, she released her next album, 2013's ''Bangerz'', premiering a considerably more sexual image that made headlines, elicited controversy, and made for unprecedented commercial success alike. She has since gone on to experiment with [[PsychedelicRock psychedelic music]], [[CountryMusic country pop]], and [[GlamRock glam]]-influenced rock.

In 2015, Cyrus [[http://www.dailydot.com/entertainment/miley-cyrus-genderqueer-foundation/ came out as pansexual and genderfluid]][[note]](although she did not initially explicitly say this, she said she has a lack of gender identity)[[/note]] following an interview with ''Out'' Magazine where she stated that she doesn't "relate to what people would say defines a girl or a boy". She [[http://www.papermag.com/2015/06/miley_cyrus_happy_hippie_foundation.php later stated]] that she'd known she was attracted to girls since the age of 14 and that she was "down with any adult -- anyone over the age of 18 who is down to love me. I don't relate to being boy or girl, and I don't have to have my partner relate to boy or girl."

!!It's our party, we can trope what we want:

* AllJustADream: The video for "Start All Over" is established as being a dream in the very beginning; it starts with her going to sleep and waking up in the dream world, and ends with her going to sleep in the dream world and waking up in the real world. [[OrWasItADream Then pictures she took while in the dream world start coming out of the printer.]]
* AmbiguousSituation: In "Who Owns My Heart", Miley is having a strong emotional reaction, but she doesn't know if it's caused by ThePowerOfLove or by SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic.
* AnswerSong: "Flowers" to "When I Was Your Man" by Music/BrunoMars, though the answer is not directed at Mars, but rather her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth. In "When I Was Your Man", Bruno Mars lists off things that he should have done to keep an ex from leaving, including buying her flowers, holding her hand and taking her dancing; In "Flowers", Miley mentions all of the above as things she can do for herself. When she released it, [[https://www.billboard.com/pro/miley-cyrus-catalog-streaming-flowers-bruno-mars-when-i-was-your-man/ Mars' song gained nearly a ''20%'' rise in streams]].
%% * AntiChristmasSong: "Another Sad Christmas Song".
* AntiLoveSong: "Can't Be Tamed" in the way "[[Music/BritneySpears Oops!... I Did It Again]]" was.

* ChildPopstar: Her earliest works were recorded when she was 12 years old.
%% * ChristmasSongs: "Rocking Around The Christmas Tree".
* ConcertKiss: Kissed Music/KatyPerry [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qi4rY299rj4 during the Bangerz tour]]... [[WaxingLyrical and liked it]]. It seems to be a running theme as two other kisses have occurred, including one with a random fan.

** Her ex-''Series/HannahMontana'' co-star Creator/EmilyOsment tweeted a joke about the possibility of Miley fans accidentally downloading Music/BruceSpringsteen's song "Wrecking Ball" on iTunes rather than Miley's 2013 #1 hit of the same name and boosting Bruce's sales in the process.
** She covered "[[Music/SgtPeppersLonelyHeartsClubBand Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds]]" with Music/TheFlamingLips for their 2014 CoverAlbum ''With a Little Help from My Fwends''.
** She has also covered Music/TheSmiths' "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" and "Bigmouth Strikes Again", and "Summertime Sadness" by Music/LanaDelRey in the acoustic sections of her ''Bangerz'' tour, and Music/ArcticMonkeys' "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?" and a duet of Music/{{Madonna}}'s "Don't Tell Me" with Madonna herself on her ''MTV Unplugged'' special.
** In 2016 she and Music/BillyIdol did a cover version of his song "Rebel Yell", and Cyrus and Idol would later team up for the song "Night Crawling". The two also did a cover of "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4VqxKCKTS8 White Wedding]]" for the 2021 Super Bowl.
** In 2018, Miley took part in a Music/EltonJohn tribute album, ''Revamp: The Songs of Elton John & Bernie Taupin'', singing "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me''.
** She achieved great praise for covering the {{Music/Blondie|Band}} song "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbdRLyixJpc Heart of Glass]], as well as Music/TheCranberries song "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l81u-oSIAp4 Zombie]]".
** In 2020, she covered Music/PinkFloyd's [[Music/WishYouWereHere1975 "Wish You Were Here"]] on ''Series/SaturdayNightLive''.
** Her 2022 New Years' Eve special featured her, Music/{{Sia}} and Creator/ParisHilton teaming up to cover Hilton's "Stars Are Blind".
* DancingRoyalty: "Night Crawling" is about a woman who finds meaning in life and the solution to her AttentionWhore tendencies by being a {{Disco}} Dancing Queen.
* DistinctDoubleAlbum: ''Series/HannahMontana 2[=/=]Meet Miley Cyrus''.
%%* DrivesLikeCrazy: "4X4".
* EarlyBirdCameo: Before her fame as a teen idol, she got a few cameos on her father's TV series, ''Doc''.
%%* FollowYourHeart: "The Climb"; "Someone Else".
* GayAesop: "My Heart Beats for Love" is dedicated to her gay friend and has one of the most thorough messages that all love is love.
* GenkiGirl: Watch one of her appearances on any talk show. Chances are the host, no matter how experienced, will run into a point where he can't get in a word edgewise. This especially happens with particularly deep, personal, or highly-controversial topics, such as LGBT rights, her dating life, or her musical transformation.
* GenreRoulette:
** Within the style of teen-pop, her music takes on elements of pop, rock, dance, techno, country-pop, [[NewWaveMusic New Wave]], hip-hop, power ballads, punk-pop...
** ''Bangerz'' was the first significant shift from her previous albums, it was mostly a pop/[=R&B=] album with production from Music/PharrellWilliams. ''Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz'' was an experimental, psychedelic rock album. ''Younger Now'' was a return to her country-pop roots, and ''Plastic Hearts'' is a rock/pop project.
* GirlishPigtails: She wears two bun knots for her MTV [=VMAs=] in 2013.
* GenreMashup:
** "4X4" is a square dance pop-rap song.
** ''Dead Petz'' contains a psychedelic rock/alternative/hip-hop/pop sound.
* GreenAesop:
** "Wake Up America" from ''Breakout'', "1 Sun" from ''Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz'',
** The first verse of "Inspired" from ''Younger Now'' might also count.
* GriefSong: "I Miss You"; "Pablow the Blowfish"; "Miss You So Much".
* HeavenlyConcentricCircles: In the music video of "Mother's Daughter", there's a mother breastfeeding her baby and wearing a crown of yellow flowers over a crown of golden spires arranged in a circle. Both elements are concentric and are meant to underlie the sanctity of motherhood. With this song. Cyrus is making a statement on sorority --that a supportive, healthy mother-daughter relationship is to be exalted.
* HiddenDepths:
** Many are surprised are how surprisingly nice and intelligent she is. She even started a charity called the "Happy Hippie Foundation", which is dedicated to homeless and LGBTQ youth.
** Miley [[https://www.webcitation.org/5migIyVhp?url=http://www.google.com/hostednews/canadianpress/article/ALeqM5jU0HkGsoNSRcHDU16bfK9LF1zNOg took piano lessons]] in order to play the classical piano pieces herself as Ronnie Miller in the film version of ''Literature/TheLastSong''.
* IHateSong: "7 Things", in which she sings about the [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin seven things]] she hates about her ex. Although the final chorus subverts this by listing the seven things she likes about them.
* InDaClub: "Bangerz" has this theme, as do "Midnight Sky" and "Night Crawling".
* ImportantHaircut:
** The punky, [[invoked]][[DyeHard blonde-dyed]] [[https://twitter.com/MileyCyrus/status/234898195845615617 pixie-cut]] she adopted in June 2012 seemed to signal her full transformation from Disney pop star to a more mature image.
** She would later grow out her hair and dye only the tips blonde, signaling her change to a LighterAndSofter country/folk sound and image (and newfound sobriety) for her "Malibu" single and seventh studio album, though she would cut her hair again, albeit it to a mullet than to a pixie cut in early 2020, following her separation from Liam Hemsworth.
* IntentionallyAwkwardTitle: "[[ClusterFBomb Fuckin Fucked Up]]", "FU", "WTF Do I Know".
* KnownOnlyByTheirNickname: {{Enforced|Trope}} when she made it her legal name.
* LeavingTheNestSong: "Ready, Set, Don't Go" is a duet with Miley's father, Music/BillyRayCyrus, about how she is ready to leave and have a future, while her father is struggling to accept that she's no longer a child.
%%* LonelyPianoPiece: "The Twinkle Song".
* LyricalDissonance: "Wrecking Ball" is a vulnerable BreakUpSong whose accompanying video shows Miley strutting about in her underwear, suggestively licking a sledgehammer, and riding an actual wrecking ball while naked.
* ManiacTongue: Once she entered her less family-friendly phase, she became rather infamous for frequently showing off her tongue. She claims it makes her less nervous in public.
* MusicIsPolitics: The look she adopted after ''Hannah Montana'' is clearly about selling records and shedding her old kiddy image.
* {{Medley}}:
** Cyrus performed a cover medley at The Gypsy Heart tour of "I Love Rock N Roll", "Cherry Bomb", and "Bad Reputation", all songs by Music/JoanJett.
** "Edge of Midnight" is a mashup of Cyrus's song "Midnight Sky" and Music/StevieNicks's song "Edge of Seventeen", featuring both artists.
* NonAppearingTitle: "Take Me Along" doesn't feature the words Take Me Along.
%%* ObsessionSong: "Obsessed".
* TheOneThingIDontHateAboutYou: "7 Things" ends with Miley listing seven things that she ''likes'' about her ex instead of hates.
* PrettyInMink: She wore a fox coat in the "We Can't Stop" video, and the same coat for a few Christmas concerts that year.
* RearrangeTheSong:
** Her live performances of "Do My Thang" on her ''Bangerz' tour have a square dance feel, at least in the beginning.
** She celebrated the tenth anniversary of "See You Again" in 2017 by performing the song for the first time in six years on BBC Live Lounge, in a slower, folksy/country style.
* RefugeInAudacity:
** Went up to accept an award for Video of the Year at the 2013 Creator/{{MTV}} European Music Awards in Amsterdam, [[http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/pop-shop/5785694/miley-cyrus-wins-video-of-the-year-lights-a-joint-on-stage-at-mtv clearly lighting a joint]] [[TheStoner on stage]].
** The 2013 MTV [=VMAs=] performance also ran on this to some extent.
** This trope and RuleOfFun seem to feel a great deal of Miley's 2014 ''Bangerz'' tour, particularly during opening songs "(SMS) Bangerz", "4x4", and "Love Money Party".
--->'''[[http://dlisted.com/2015/11/20/miley-cyrus-performed-with-a-big-dick-last-night/ Michael K.]]''': This is what happens when a 90s baby really, really wishes they lived through the 80s.
* {{Retcon}}:
** On her website circa August 2012, she has ''Breakout'', ''Time of Our Lives'' and ''Can't Be Tamed'', but no longer acknowledges her album "collaboration" with Hannah Montana called ''Meet Miley Cyrus''.
** As of late 2013, she doesn't even acknowledge that anything pre-''Bangerz'' even existed.
** Interviews taken around the release of ''Can't Be Tamed'' have Miley saying "seven years old me would beat-up 18-year old me for being a sellout", so maybe this is a trend we're seeing here.
** Miley kept her teen-pop hits (and the occasional Hannah hit) in live setlists even up to the 2011 ''Gypsy Heart Tour'', yet the only music of hers to predate 2012 in her regular ''Bangerz Tour'' setlists are "Can't Be Tamed" and "Party in the U.S.A.". May have something to do with her wanting to be seen as a new artist with her Creator/RCARecords deal. The tour's director, Dianne Martel, is responsible for barely any old hits being performed. She thought they "wouldn't fit" the theme of the tour. It's safe to say Miley may not have wanted to perform them either, though.
* RockIsAuthenticPopIsShallow: She has expressed this attitude at times, stating that she [[https://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/music/miley-cyrus-admits-i-hate-pop-music-20100602-wwxz.html "hates Pop music"]] and that [[https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-5123379/The-Voice-Miley-Cyrus-admits-not-liking-pop-music.html she doesn't like her own Pop music]]. This may have been CreatorBacklash against her early music when she was starring on ''Series/HannahMontana'' and releasing kid-friendly pop music at the time. Despite this, much of the music Cyrus makes is firmly in the Pop category, though she has played with different genres such as Country, Rock, and Experimental.
%%* RockStarSong: "Fly on the Wall" and "Robot".
* SceneryCensor: In the music video for "Wrecking Ball", when she's riding the eponymous wrecking ball in the nude, her bits are kept hidden by the strategically placed chain on the ball or her own limbs.
* SelfDeprecation: Her ''Series/SaturdayNightLive'' appearance in 2011 has a sketch called "Creator/DisneyChannel Acting School", a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWAx2ojuFd4 spoof ad]] where Miley, dressed in an over-exaggerated [[Series/HannahMontana Miley Ray Stewart]] outfit, and former {{Creator/Nickelodeon}} star [[Series/KenanAndKel Kenan Thompson]] dressed as Creator/RavenSymone, parody the conventions and devices she and her fellow Disney stars used in the channel's hit {{Kid Com}}s.
* ShakingTheRump: Her stage routine now utilizes a surprising amount of this, ever since taking a HotterAndSexier turn. She described her love of "twerking" in-depth in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P90tzNodVzY a 2013 interview with Ryan Seacrest]], but it really came to dominate her public image after her performance at the 2013 [=VMAs=]. She's arguably the reason that "twerk" is now a household word.
%%* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: Best expressed by the video for "Wrecking Ball".
%%* ShotForShotRemake: LOL was one of these.
* ShouldersUpNudity: In the "Wrecking Ball" video, she is naked in the WhiteVoidRoom portions of the video, but the camera only ever stays zoomed in at her face or only far away enough to show her bare shoulders.
* ShoutOut:
** The closeup of her face at the start of the "Wrecking Ball" video is one to Music/SineadOConnor's "Nothing Compares to U". Notably, O'Connor was not impressed.
** Miley dresses up as one of her musical heroes, Music/ElvisPresley, multiple times in the "Younger Now" video, and the cover of the album of the same name.
%%* ShrinkingViolet: The protagonist in "See You Again" is one. May also cross with ObsessionSong.
%%* SillyLoveSongs: "Stay", "Adore You", "Full Circle" and "Obsessed" especially. Actually, most of her discography pre-''Bangerz'' was composed of these.
* SingerNamedrop: "My best friend Lesley said, 'Oh, she's just bein' Miley.'"
%%* TheSomethingSong: "The Twinkie Song".
%%* TheStoner: During the ''Bangerz'' and ''Dead Petz'' eras, as confirmed in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel.
* StudioChatter: Miley shouts "Rrrrock'N'Rolllll!!!" at the end of "East Northumberland High".
* SupermodelStrut: "Wrecking Ball" has her doing slow-mo struts at the start of the video, all while dressed in her underwear and dragging a sledgehammer with her. Given it's a sad BreakUpSong, it comes across as LyricalDissonance and just an attempt to invoke {{fanservice}}.
* SurrealMusicVideo:
** "Start All Over" breaks the bounds of logic.
** "We Can't Stop" is even more surreal, with twerking, giant teddy bears, a fake finger amputation, diving in a swimming pool, etc.
** "[[https://youtu.be/dEfDF_6cVjs Lighter]]" is both this and a [[{{Minimalism}} Minimalist Music Video]].
* TakeThat:
** "Robot" is basically one enormous TakeThat aimed at the Disney machine and the ContractualPurity it entails, as well as a swipe at the MoralGuardians who overreact to Cyrus' every misstep. It could also be towards a certain episode of ''WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy'' that depicts her as an actual robot.
** Her ''Series/SaturdayNightLive'' monologue got even straighter to the point, in which she compared her relatively mild scandals to the likes of Creator/CharlieSheen and Creator/LindsayLohan and satirically apologized, saying "I'm sorry that I'm not perfect." In the song, of course.
** "Fly on the Wall" is about the paparazzi and how they like seeing things that aren't there with guys who are just her friends and how she's 100% committed to whoever she happens to be dating at any moment.
** The line "It's my mouth, I can say what I want to" in "We Can't Stop" can be interpreted in this way.
** This response to a meme snarkily and negatively comparing "old Miley" with "new Miley" [[note]]the "new Miley" photo was taken from a silly, playful spontaneous, at-home video she made on Instagram of her singing Music/RickJames' "Super Freak" through a toy voice changer microphone[[/note]] and attributing it to her [[TheStoner stoner habits]] was met [[http://instagram.com/p/wrzy2VwzMV/?modal=true with this caption]] on her Instagram account.
* TeenIdol: Was only about thirteen when she hit it big.
* ThreeMinutesOfWrithing: Beginning with ''Party in the USA'', hip gyrations have become an increasingly prominent part of Miley's dance repertoire, culminating in her twerking at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. It's since become a major part of her repertoire.
* TitleTrack:
** ''Breakout'', ''The Time of Our Lives'' and ''Can't Be Tamed'' all have one.
** "SMS (Bangerz)" is a partial example.
** ''Endless Summer Vacation'' takes its title from a line in "Rose-Colored Lenses".
* ToplessnessFromTheBack: In the music video for "Wrecking Ball", when she's riding the eponymous wrecking ball in the nude, she's either seen with SceneryCensor provided by that chain from the front, or with a shot of her back back as she turns away from the camera.
* TheTysonZone: Starting with ''Bangerz'', her behavior became so out of control that nothing she does comes across as surprising anymore.
* VocalDissonance: Her cute appearance is a sharp contrast with her unusually deep, husky voice.
* VocalEvolution: Her cover of "Lilac Wine" erases all of her country and raspy vibes for a way fresher voice choice.
* AWildRapperAppears:
** ''Bangerz'' is full of instances like these.
*** "4x4" features Music/{{Nelly}}.
*** "My Darlin" features Music/{{Future}}.
*** "Love Money Party" features Music/BigSean.
*** "FU" features French Montana.
*** "Hands in the Air" features Music/{{Ludacris}}.
*** "23"[[note]]from the tenth-anniversary deluxe vinyl[[/note]] features Music/WizKhalifa and Juicy J.
** Miley does her own rapping in "Liberty Walk" from her ''Can't Be Tamed'' album.
* WingedHumanoid: She plays one (and also a PeacockGirl) in the music video for "Can't Be Tamed".
* WordSaladLyrics: Scattered throughout her ''Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz'' album.
* XtremeKoolLetterz: Has a fondness for this:
** Her 2013 album title ''Bangerz'' and her free 2015 album, ''Miley Cyrus And Her Dead Petz''.
** One of her Website/YouTube accounts, which she opened after she had trouble posting videos on her own website, was (with some irony) called "[=MCForRealzzz=]".
** When making ''WebVideo/TheMileyAndMandyShow'', she nicknamed herself and her dancer friend/co-host Mandy Jiroux "Milez" and "Manderz" in many episodes.
