* [[Characters/CodeGeassSuzakuKururugi Suzaku Kururugi]] in ''Anime/CodeGeass'' starts off as a heroic upstanding fellow, who wants to change the [[TheEmpire system]] from the inside. After the [[spoiler:death of Euphemia at the hands of Lelouch]], he more or less seems to go temporarily insane, leading to a justified battle with the MagnificentBastard Protagonist Lelouch. However, in the interim between both seasons going well into R2, not only has he become a {{Jerkass}} of ridiculous proportions, he has sold out his old best friend for a step up the power ladder, and his goal of changing the system from within has degraded to making his own homeland a better place (effectively giving the rest of the enslaved Areas of Britannia the middle finger). [[spoiler:He does eventually realize that prioritizing means over ends ''really'' doesn't pay off after a couple of MyGodWhatHaveIDone moments and proceeds to team up with Lelouch to save the world and [[TheAtoner atone for his sins]].]]
** [[Characters/CodeGeassBlackKnights The Black Knights]] undergo a similar one in R2 19 when they [[spoiler:intend to sell out Lelouch to Schneizel]] in exchange for Japan, at the expense the rest of the world represented by UFN, for which the [=BKs=] made up the primary military force, and their fight against Britannia's dominion of the world, and there was no actual guarantee that Britannia would keep their hands off of Japan once and for all. (And their own ally Kallen was nearly caught in the crossfire.) None of this went very far at all, given that Lelouch was whisked away by Rolo in a [[spoiler:HeroicSacrifice]] the moment things started to go south, and Xingke and Kaguya would soon catch Ohgi trying to cover the whole thing up.
** After the aforementioned event in addition to [[spoiler:Nunnally's apparent demise]], [[Characters/CodeGeassLelouchLamperouge Lelouch Lamperouge]], who prior to the betrayal had actually assembled a legitimate front in the UFN to battle Britannia, now decides to go it alone, [[TheUnfettered abandoning all personal inhibitions]] and willing to use his geass on anyone and go to even more drastic extremes, including making {{Faceless|Goons}} SlaveMooks out of his new army, detonating the world's biggest energy reserve [[InferredHolocaust and apparently causing more death and destruction than he did during his rebellion pre-betrayal]]. The latter (or former technically) was at least somewhat justified because of [[BlackAndGreyMorality the opposition he faced off against]]. It's not that he became evil per se; the plot justifies it as [[spoiler:him centering the world's hate around him for world peace]]. However, given the leading circumstances and the plausibility of such a plan (and Lelouch's own admission that it was a gamble), it all seemed like a convenient [[DeathSeeker death wish]] for him. The aforementioned fact that causing worse, unnecessary destruction was a path to atonement, even as a mask, when it is even noted in side materials by Lelouch that there are other methods, makes it seem more a case of {{Designated|Evil}} than NecessarilyEvil.
** Charles being a WellIntentionedExtremist reveals him to be worse than Lelouch and Suzaku combined in this regard. He conquered most of the world [[spoiler:just to take control of the Thought Elevators scattered around the globe, allowing him to get to the World of C to destroy "God" and kill free will itself]].
* PlayedForLaughs with about the ''entire cast'' of ''Manga/CromartieHighSchool''. Several characters are introduced with some goal they want to achieve, but the nonsensical air of the titular school overcomes them and suddenly they don't know what they want out of life anymore. Not only this results in a few [[AbortedArc aborted arcs]], but also goes as far as the manga itself eventually getting cancelled and the author reportedly not realizing it for ''two whole months''!
* ''Anime/CrossAnge'': The BigBad Embryo himself. After World War ''VII'', he accidentally stumbled upon a protected PocketDimension in subspace and played god. His intention originally was to RestartTheWorld and create a perfect society that wouldn't repeat the horrors of war he has experienced seven times, which on paper had an ounce of nobility. Multiple failures and restarts later[[note]]some because HumansAreBastards, some due to his ControlFreak perfectionist standards[[/note]], he has become a psychopathic rapist geezer who enjoys brainwashing women who try to rebel against his rule into becoming sex slaves, while he has generally lost his drive to achieve utopia yet continues to create and destroy civilizations so they will produce dolls for him to screw.
* Invoked over the course of ''Manga/DeathNote''. [[Characters/DeathNoteLightYagami Light Yagami's]] megalomania causes him to completely lose sight of his original goal ([[UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans to improve the world by removing its criminal element]]) and degrade into using the Death Note to [[AGodAmI become "The God of the New World" and destroy his enemies]], as well as clean up any undesirables; by the final chapters, he's starting to kill people for being ''lazy''. He also turns from a ManipulativeBastard who carefully plans everything out into a SmugSnake who is so sure of his own success that the very concept of his own failure seems to confuse him. Many a character points out that Light is little better than a serial killer by the end, but Light's so blinded by his pride that it takes [[spoiler:his impending death]] for him to catch on.
* Lampshaded and ultimately justified in ''Anime/DevilmanCrybaby''. While Ryo's ultimate goals are ostensibly to save humanity from demons and expose them to the world, he starts to realize that his actions over the course of the series (including trying to kill innocent civilians and [[spoiler: using the revelation of the existence of demons to create martial law and sow panic and violence amongst the populace]]) run more and more counter to it, eventually leading him to return to South America for answers. [[spoiler: There he discovers that he's actually the reincarnation of Satan, and his actions have been serving his own subconscious plans to destroy humanity and pave the way for demons to retake the Earth, and from there he fully embraces this role.]]
* ''Franchise/DragonBall'':
** When Vegeta was first introduced, he wanted to use the Dragon Balls to wish for immortality and rule the universe after he killed Frieza for years of enslavement. Although he was upset with Goku for 'beating' him on Earth, fighting him wasn't his primary goal, seeing Goku as more as an annoyance or a pawn to his end goals. After Namek, Vegeta lost all desire to rule the universe and live forever. Instead, he becomes completely obsessed with surpassing Goku. Some of this could be motivated by the fact that it was Goku who beat and humiliated Frieza, while he, the Saiyan Prince, was given a dog's death and reduced to begging a lower class warrior to avenge him.
** Frieza himself also undergoes this. When he first appeared, he, like so many before him, wanted to use the Dragon Balls to gain immortality and stay in control of the universe forever. After Goku defeated him on Namek, Frieza loses all desire for the Dragon Balls, instead becoming obsessed with getting revenge on Goku for his humiliation.
*** This is capitalized in ''Anime/DragonBallSuperBroly'', during which he ''succeeds'' at collecting the Dragon Balls before any of the heroes even know he's plotting something. When Kikono naturally assumes he's going to wish for ultimate power or immortality, Frieza dismisses the notion as [[RevengeBeforeReason it would eliminate any challenge in taking his revenge]], and his time in Hell [[WhoWantsToLiveForever had soured his opinion of being unable to die.]] No, instead he intends to wish [[spoiler:to be ''[[TheNapoleon five centimeters taller]]'']].
** Van Zant, the AxCrazy gunman from the Buu Saga who goes on a killing spree on his own during Majin Buu's rampage. His initial reason for doing so was [[ApocalypseAnarchy because he thinks that since Buu's going to destroy the world anyway, he can do whatever he wants]]. Eventually, this leads to him trying to kill Buu himself because he wants to keep killing people, which, in turn, leads to the creation of Super Buu, who makes certain he and his partner in crime die horribly.
** Like his [[Anime/DragonBallSuper anime]] counterpart, Zamasu in the ''Manga/DragonBallSuper'' manga starts off as a KnightTemplar who views mortals as evil and wants to exterminate them to create a perfect world. But whereas anime Zamasu retains his vision and still reveres the gods [[spoiler: even after killing them]], manga Zamasu loses all of his noble intentions by the time he fuses with Goku Black and now wants to become the TopGod just for the sake of it. Even worse is when he denounces his fellow gods as beneath him.
* In ''Manga/FullmetalAlchemist'', Roy Mustang pursues his goal of becoming Fuhrer so he can fix Amestris' government and return power to the people as atonement for the atrocities he and the other alchemists committed in Ishval. However, he nearly loses sight of this when [[spoiler:Envy gloats about being the one to murder Hughes]], leading Roy into a RoaringRampageOfRevenge. While he easily takes down the enemy, Ed points out that if he gives in to hatred and vengeance by executing the now-helpless [[spoiler:Envy]], then he’ll never be the kind of man who can actually make things better, something that '''Scar''' points out as well. Hawkeye is the one to bring back him back to his senses [[spoiler: by threatening him and herself.]]
** [[PlayingWithATrope Played with]] regarding the BigBad, Father -- he originally started out as [[spoiler:Homunculus, a lab experiment who couldn't survive outside of the tiny flask he was in, and thus just wanted to be free from it. Homunculus accomplished this goal by sacrificing the city's population to form a body for himself and immortality for him and Van Hohenheim, as he was born from the latter’s blood]]. After that, Father starts an elaborate AncientConspiracy, sealing himself in a dark underground hideout, preparing for the day he can [[spoiler:absorb God]]. At the same time, Father just sees ''that'' goal as the next step of his original goal. He wants to go from being [[spoiler: free from his flask to free from ''any'' constraints, including what he calls God]].
* Far in the backstory of ''Literature/FullMetalPanic'', Amalgam was founded with good intentions, and they actually played a key role in defusing the Cuban Missile Crisis. However, they were founded shortly after WWII and the main story takes place in the 90s. In the roughly 50 years between its founding and the main story, virtually all of its members had retired and been replaced by people who had different goals and used the organization to achieve those goals instead of the ones set forth by its founders. [[spoiler:[[CreateYourOwnVillain In the end, Mr. Mercury, the last member of the original council, was forced to create Mithril in order to stop his out of control creation]].]]
* Naraku from ''Manga/InuYasha'' has changed motives so many times that eventually he was evil just for the sake of being evil. Initially, he wanted to use the Shikon no Tama to become a powerful full-fledged youkai, so his goal is getting all the shards of the Jewel. But then, he was somewhat driven by his lust for Kikyo and hatred for Inuyasha, both coming from his human heart, so his goal becomes getting rid of that. He succeeds in separating his physical heart and discarding his feelings for Kikyou, so now his goal changes to killing her. But it turns out he needs both his heart and feelings to do this so the goal becomes reabsorbing them, and when he does, he finally kills her. In the end, he succeeds in getting the whole Shikon Jewel, but he neither absorbs it nor does he wish on it, he just decides to use it to kill his enemies. Naraku himself admits he's not sure what comes next after he's done that. Yes, that's right - he spends ''over 500 issues'' of the manga trying to get the jewel, and once he finally has it, he's not sure what to do with it. Even worse, it's revealed later that he did make a wish on the Jewel but was not granted: to have Kikyou's heart. However, Naraku is an amalgamation of many {{Youkai}} and a human man called Onigumo, so it's understandable that his personality traits and goals not only change significantly (it has even been a plot point on occasion), but also contradict each other; especially when it comes to Kikyou and the Jewel. The youkai hate Kikyou and want the Jewel to become powerful, but Onigumo "loves" Kikyou and wants the Jewel to have her.
* The admirals in ''Anime/IrresponsibleCaptainTylor'' go from trying to set up situations to disgrace the titular captain, to setting up situations where his ship will be unwitting and unwilling bait to give them an advantage in their war, to setting him up for an UriahGambit with no other benefit. This is due to SanitySlippage on part of the admirals, because these plans keep failing and often backfire spectacularly.
* ''Anime/MagicalProjectS'' Pixy Misa starts every episode ruining the balance of good vs evil (that's her purpose) but ends acting for the ''Evulz'' and more often than not ends vacationing instead of torturing or even destroying Pretty Sammy when she has the chance. Justified in that she is not actually evil but she just represents the repressed aspects of Misao and doesn't really care for her goals.
* Occurred in-universe in ''Literature/TheMisfitOfDemonKingAcademy'' with [[KnightTemplar General Jerga]], a PosthumousCharacter defined by his hatred of demons for the death of his wife and child during the war between demons and humans (it should be noted that demons in this world are '''not''' AlwaysChaoticEvil and the war was a mostly [[GreyAndGreyMorality grey]] affair). While he was obsessed with vengeance beyond reason even in life, [[spoiler:by the time he comes back as [[AbstractApotheosis the ultimate spell Demon Judgement <Jerga>]], he is so far gone he is willing to wipe out all of the '''humans''' - the people he used to protect! - via LifeDrain so he can muster up enough power to wipe out the demons. This is justified by the fact that Demon Judgement <Jerga> is not really '''him''' per se, rather, it's a living spell imbued with all of his [[ThePowerOfHate hatred]], but none of his empathy or any of his positive qualities (these went to a different spell).]]
* Jerid Messa from ''Anime/MobileSuitZetaGundam'' starts off as an ambitious elite soldier (by mediocre Federation standards), and has the goal of one day leading the Titans forces, even if the only reason is for the power that such a position would provide. A number of situations in the series even make him a [[PunchClockVillain relatively good guy in everyday life]]. After one too many fights with the series protagonist, he has transformed into an individual completely focused on nothing but pure bloody vengeance. To be fair, his breakdown is largely precipitated by the death of his love interest Maua Pharaoh. Who was one of the more decent characters in the series. While she's on the "bad guys'" side, she's never shown to do anything morally reprehensible herself, which is saying something in a series where even a good number of the "good guys" are former nazi-expys with questionable motives and war crimes on their rap sheets. It's also entirely possible that he believes his original goal of leading the Titans will never come true if Kamille keeps standing in his way.
** Same for Mashymere Cello in ''[[Anime/MobileSuitGundamZZ Gundam ZZ]]''. Captain of a Neo Zeon ship, very idealistic and unwilling to authorize actions that would endanger civilians. Tries to keep his cool and conduct battles in a way that would make Haman Karn proud of him. Ducks out early on after it's decided he's not up to the task of defeating the hero... only to come back later on as a cold and merciless soldier. In an aversion though, the final battle ''still'' shows him as the lesser of two evils due to an EnemyCivilWar, and he gets to go out in a blaze of glory.
*** This is a side effect of having even more [[WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity Cyber]] [[ThisIsYourBrainOnEvil Newtype]] enhancements. Best case scenario, the enhanced person goes a little nutty. Worse case scenario, they become raving lunatics bent on causing as much property damage as possible. Mashimar tends toward the latter.
** Blue Cosmos from ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEED'' suffers greatly from this trope. Originally they were an environmental pressure group, but after Human genetic enhancement became possible they shifted their focus to preventing widespread genetic modification. After genetic enhancement did become widespread they became [[MugglePower a militant/terrorist organization]] [[FantasticRacism bent on killing anyone who had their DNA altered]]. When war finally breaks out between the genetically enhanced Coordinators and the natural humans of Earth Blue Cosmos begins artificially enhancing their own people to fight one on one with the Coordinators ([[{{Hypocrite}} because apparently it's okay]] if the enhancements are based on cybernetics and [[PsychoSerum addictive drugs]] rather than genetic modification). Then it all turns out they were just a catspaw to Logos who do it for [[WarForFunAndProfit profit]]. (Although the last one is said by the BigBad of the [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEEDDestiny sequel]] to incite people so it may or may not be true.)
* ''Manga/{{Naruto}}''
** [[MadScientist Orochimaru's]] experiments and [[GrandTheftMe his usage of different bodies from ninja]] started as a method to learn every jutsu and [[ImmortalitySeeker gain immortality]]. However, his continuous experiments in the Cursed Seal seem not to do that and turn them into monstrous beings, not really related to his original goal. Sasuke actually called him out on this before finishing him. Then it's later revealed that Orochimaru's original reason for wanting immortality was that he was heartbroken by his parents' deaths and wanted to make sure he'd still be around to meet their reincarnations no matter how long that took. As his immortality research took ever darker turns, he completely forgot about this.
** Inverted with [[TheRival Sasuke]]. His goals have always remained more or less the same: kill his brother Itachi as revenge for murdering the Uchihas, and then restore his clan, but how he plans to accomplish these goals began to vary wildly as Sasuke's mental state deteriorated more and more rapidly. After Itachi's death, his goals switched from killing Konoha's elders, to killing Danzo, to destroying Konoha, to killing every last man, woman and child in Konoha because he believes they're laughing at him over the unprovoked destruction of his clan. Possibly this is due in part to Itachi dying from a mere disease and the subsequent revelation that he wasn’t quite evil, so rather than giving up his unfulfilled need for vengeance, Sasuke just started shifting it onto any vaguely justifiable target.
** [[NotSoHarmlessVillain Tobi]] is actually a subversion. We are initially led to believe that he is actually Madara Uchiha, the real one of which rather did come in this flavor. With the revelation that he's actually [[spoiler: [[FallenHero Obito Uchiha]], a childhood friend of Kakashi's, we learn that his sole motivation is to destroy the world and trap everyone in it in a LotusEaterMachine because he thinks it's not real after [[TheLostLenore the girl he loved died]], because [[InsaneTrollLogic a world where something bad can happen to the girl he liked can't possibly be real]]. He never once deviated from or lost sight of that goal since the day she died and Madara revealed his plans for the LotusEaterMachine.]]
* Asuham Boone in ''Anime/OvermanKingGainer'' wants revenge on Gain for his sister, but is an overall good guy. Eventually his obsession as Gain continues leading the Yapan people to Yapan leads him to decide to freeze the world using the Overdevil. Its eventually revealed that Asuham's sister had a one night stand and Asuham overreacted.
* ''Anime/PokemonTheSeries'':
** Brock's life goal was to be a great Pokémon breeder. Unfortunately, the CasanovaWannabe part of his characterization [[{{Flanderization}} consumed the character]]. He finally left the show becoming a Pokémon '''doctor'''. At the same time, he was usually shown taking care of Pokémon when need be and already took care of his younger siblings. [[FridgeBrilliance Perhaps he found a new calling.]]
** Misty's ''overt'' goal is to be a Water Pokémon Master.[[note]]Her ''covert'' goal is [[TheGloriousWarOfSisterlyRivalry to get out from under her sisters' thumbnails]]. She seems to be able to accomplish this by staying with Ash until ''they'' decide to quit the Gym altogether.[[/note]] However, aside from a few episodes in Johto, [[InformedAttribute she never gets any chance to demonstrate any battling proficiency]] and her Kanto captures were more accidents than applications of knowledge.
** Ash, along with his ongoing ToBeAMaster goal, originally stated he wanted to capture all the Pokémon in the world, but this goal vanished fairly quickly. A case of Administrivia/TropesAreTools, as capturing all the Pokémon in the world would be highly unlikely, especially given how rare some Pokémon are. Plus, it's more practical for Ash to raise a select team he can personally train than simply capture all Pokémon and never use a majority of them.
** The Team Rocket trio, who originally decided to follow Ash because his Pikachu blew up a Pokémon Center. Since they were trying to steal strong Pokémon, this made sense. Through the show's run, however, they have encountered numerous Pokémon who are significantly more powerful than Pikachu. They continue (on and off) to attempt to get Pikachu because they refuse to give up, even though their boss never cared about Pikachu in the first place. Nowadays it seems to be a more of an ItsPersonal situation between the trio and Ash.
** Alain in the ''XY'' series started out wanting to get a Mega Stone to study Mega Evolution with Professor Sycamore, with battling simply being a part of the research. By the time of the series' climax, he's constantly trading reasons just to get stronger with his original goal practically irrelevant until his HeroicBSOD sets him back on the right path.
** Gary Oak, much like Ash, originally wanted to be a Pokémon Master who aimed to catch every single Pokémon in the world. This is definitely apparent due to Gary [[AlwaysSomeoneBetter constantly one-upping Ash]] throughout their rivalry in the original series. However, after losing in the first round in the Indigo League and losing to Ash in the Johto League, Gary decided to abandon the goal of being a Pokémon Master and wanted to follow in his grandfather's footsteps to become a Pokémon Researcher instead. Although it was thanks to those experiences that Gary developed into a [[CharacterDevelopment much better person]] and he and Ash become best friends.
* Haru, TheHero of ''Manga/RaveMaster'', had a pretty easy motive with could be summarized as "I want to save the world". He keeps it up for all 35 volumes. It's the BigBad, Lucia, who can't seem to decide what his reason for fighting is (lampshaded once). When he first appears he claims to simply be after power, then he wants to prove his family isn't crazy (by taking over the world), then he wants to be a god, then he wants power again, then he wants to break some curse that was put on his family for [[NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished stopping humans from going extinct]] by [[GottaKillThemAll making them all die after all]].
* ''Anime/SailorMoon'': When Nehellenia is introduced in SuperS she is shown to want to create a world of darkness and take over planet Earth, both to spite the fallen Silver Millennium, and also to eventually take over the universe. After her defeat at the end of SuperS and her return in Stars her entire motivation revolves around making Usagi suffer and destroy everything she loves.
* Toward the end of ''Anime/SpeedGrapher'', someone with the people skills and political savvy to become Prime Minister becomes an all-consuming openly megalomaniacal beast with nothing more important to do than indulge in evil laughter and pull grotesque faces. What makes this JustForFun/{{Egregious}} is that before he appeared to have a plan with substantially evil implications on the lives of real people, but that all degenerates into BondVillainStupidity just to terrorize a little girl he claims to worship.
* Ralph in ''Anime/StrainStrategicArmoredInfantry'' went from military golden boy to psychotic traitor [[spoiler:when he saw the atrocities committed [[PoweredByAForsakenChild to invent Mimics]].]] The trauma drove him insane, which may explain why his motives go from SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong to KillAllHumans.
* In ''Anime/TokyoMewMew'', the aliens originally wanted to reclaim their former homeland of Earth and wipe out humanity because of their pollution and mistreatment of the planet. In the Creator/FourKidsEntertainment dub, their motive was completely changed and they were given a name, the Cyniclons. Their motive instead became to move to Earth from their current near-inhospitable planet after having destroyed their own due to self-inflicted environment damage, with the Cyniclons having never lived on Earth previously.
* Rodimus in ''Anime/TransformersEnergon''. He had his own agenda and came into conflict with Optimus Prime, but mere episodes later was just one of the soldiers doing what he's told -- in spite of being of equivalent experience and reputation as Optimus Prime (in the Japanese version, he's Rodimus Convoy, holding the same rank as Grand Convoy).
** Also, Wing Saber in ''Anime/TransformersEnergon''. After his buddy Padlock is killed by Shockblast, Wing Saber swears he will have justice. Kind of vanishes after they capture Shockblast and he then escapes.
** Also, Kicker in ''Anime/TransformersEnergon'' (okay, let's just say that everybody in ''Energon'' just wanders aimlessly through the show, not really knowing what they're doing or why). In Kicker's case, his hatred of the Transformers just quietly vanishes.
* This sort of thing happened across international lines as part of Creator/FourKidsEntertainment's dub of ''Anime/YuGiOh'' They usually played down the sympathy-inducing backstories of the villains and made them more evil. Pegasus' goal was the same (to bring back his lover Cecilia) but the methods were more ruthless. In the original, he needed to defeat Yugi so that he could gain control of Kaibacorp's technology and create a ''hologram'' of Cecilia to live with. In the dub, he wanted Yugi's Millennium Puzzle and all Millennium Items so that he could bring Cecilia's soul back and infuse it into the hologram. It's said in the dub that in doing so, he could inadvertently destroy the world. Although probably unintentional, [[{{Woolseyism}} this motive shift actually makes sense in the long run]], as the seven items together DO open the door to the afterlife (where Pegasus could get Cecilia's soul) and also unleash the power of Zorc Necrophades into the world, which could indeed destroy it against Pegasus's wishes (this is Yami Bakura's intentional goal.)
** Marik/Malik got it worse, though. In the original, he simply wanted to escape the life of a tomb keeper, kill Yugi (more specifically, the pharaoh), whom he believed had killed his father, and live peacefully ever after with his sister and stepbrother. In the dub, this is changed to him wanting Yugi's Millennium Puzzle and the God Cards to rule the world "as pharaoh". It's even worse with Yami Marik, who, in the original, was essentially the Joker with ancient Egyptian shadow magic. In the dub, he wants to rule the world, too.
** Meanwhile dark Bakura suffered this in-universe for a while, retroactively. He turns out to have had [[DoomedHometown fairly]] [[YouKilledMyFather good]] reasons for messing with the royal family, at one point, which somehow became a plan to destroy either Egypt or the world, partly because the spirit of hatred born from the slaughter of his family (Japanese) or an ancient primal destructive dark thing (English) teamed up with him. He seems to have entered the series with amnesia, carrying him still farther from sanity. But he gets back to the revenge-and-end-of-world thing in the Millenium World arc.
