[[folder:A]]
* AbhorrentAdmirer: Hal towards Roxanne, at least initially. He's inappropriate and awkward enough with his advances to make Roxanne very uncomfortable around him. And then he gets superpowers, which does ''not'' help with this.
-->'''Hal:''' If I were Metro Man, Megamind wouldn't be kidnapping you all the time. That's the first thing.\
'''Roxanne:''' That's sweet, Hal.\
'''Hal:''' And I'd be watching you, like a... ''dingo'' watches a human baby! ... Okay, that sounded... [[{{Understatement}} Okay, that sounded a little weird...]]\
'''Roxanne:''' A ''little'' bit, yeah.
* AcCENTUponTheWrongSylLABle: Megamind pronounces many words in a quirky way (presumably having learned them from reading as opposed to interaction with his classmates), especially "Metro City" (he pronounces it in a way as to rhyme with "atrocity"). This comes back to bite him.
** "Ollo!" - Hello
** "Shool" - School
** [="RevAHnge"=] - Revenge
** [="MelONkuhlee"=] - Melancholy
** "Spee-ider" - Spider, in a fit of serendipity.
** "Mooldings" - mouldings
** In "The Button of Doom": "Zherage" - Garage; [="RaBAHT:=] - Robot
* TheAce: Metro Man.
* ActionSurvivor: Roxanne Ritchi. Got a death trap? She has SeenItAll before and she is unimpressed.
* AdorableEvilMinion: Minion has the whole 'alien piranha in a gorilla-themed mecha death suit' thing going on, but is otherwise quite sweet and lovely. Also applies to the Brainbots, which when not obeying Megamind's every whim tend to act like puppies.
* AffablyEvil: Megamind and Minion.
* AffectionateParody: Of Franchise/{{Superman}} and the superhero genre in general.
* AlliterativeName: Megamind, Metro Man, Roxanne Ritchi. Music Man, also fitting the "M" theme. Makes sense, as the film is a superhero parody, and superhero comics ''love'' alliterative names.
* AllAnimalsAreDogs:
** The Brainbots act like a big group of puppies when not carrying out an evil plan. They swarm over to Megamind at the start while Minion says they missed him, play fetch with wrenches, and Megamind frequently refers to himself as their "Daddy" (as many pet owners do).
** The Spider Bot in "The Button of Doom" short whimpers like a dog when Megamind tells Minion that he can't keep it. Minion even calls to it like one.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Part of the reason for Megamind's StartOfDarkness.
* AnAesop: Your path in life isn't set in stone, and it's up to you to choose what kind of person you want to be.
* AnalogyBackfire: Tighten tells Roxanne that [[SillyRabbitIdealismIsForKids her idealism is unrealistic]], and that beliefs such as goodness being found in all people are as fictional as the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and the [[EskimosArentReal Queen of England]].
* AndStarring: Brad Pitt gets the "and" credit.
* AndThenWhat: The premise of the movie. Megamind [[PunchClockVillain never expected to be able to actually kill Metro Man]], and so the rest of the movie comes from Megamind trying to figure out what to make of his new situation- and resulting ennui.
* AndThisIsFor: Tighten employs this trope when fighting Megamind.
--> '''Tighten:''' [[SelfServingMemory This is for stealing my girlfriend!]] [[NeverMyFault This one's for Space Dad making a fool out of me!]] And Megamind, this one's for [[PaperThinDisguise Space Stepmom]]! [[ComicallyMissingThePoint You]] ''[[ComicallyMissingThePoint lied]]'' [[ComicallyMissingThePoint to her!]]
* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: Roxanne gives this at the end of her speech to Megamind:
--> '''Roxanne:''' The Megamind I knew would never have run from a fight, even one he knew he had no chance of winning. It was your best quality. You need to be that guy right now! The city needs you. ''I'' need you.
* AntagonistInMourning: Megamind, after years of being Metro Man's primary antagonist, feels a complete loss of purpose after successfully but unexpectedly killing Metro Man.
* AntiHero: Megamind later in the movie, after Tighten turns into a villain.
* ArchEnemy: To Metro Man, [[PunchClockVillain not that he actually hates him or anything]].
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking:
** After Megamind destroys Metro Man, he celebrates by terrorizing Metro City, now completely unopposed. He steals tons of money from the city's banks, takes expensive paintings for his own furnishings and claims the city pet shop as his own.
** Megamind finds Tighten had been committing crimes, with stolen bank money, stolen safes... and a stolen bicycle. Oh, and a Face Melter arcade game.
** Megamind's De- ray has settings: De-hydrate (condenses objects into a small cube), De-stroy, De-ath ray, and... De-coupage?
* ArtisticLicensePrison: At the very beginning of the movie, an infant Megamind crash-lands in the middle of a prison yard in Metro City, located in Michigan, United States. He is subsequently taken in and raised by the inmates (who are thankfully shown to be nice to the child), with the warden and the guards deciding to keep him there as he grows up in no small part due to his involvement with the escape of several prisoners. Needless to say, that would ''not'' fly in real life and Megamind would be taken to an orphanage (or a lab since he's an alien) as soon as he's discovered by the guards.
* AutobotsRockOut: Megamind enjoys music, and accompanies his (extremely impressive) entrances with suitable classic rock.
** Who else but him marches up to take over City Hall using AC/DC's ''Highway to Hell'' as his theme song?
* AwesomeButImpractical: Some of Megamind's more important inventions, like the Satellite Death Ray or the Infuser Gun, take too long to warm up. Downplayed a bit in that once they ''do'' warm up, the "Impractical" part pretty much goes away.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:B]]
* BadassBiker: Megamind in an awesome, flying motorcycle kinda way.
* BadassBoast: '''''"[[HesBack YOU DARE CHALLENGE MEGAMIND?!]]"'''''
* TheBadGuyWins: The film was based on the premise, "What if Lex Luthor defeated Franchise/{{Superman}}?"
* BadIsGoodAndGoodIsBad: Megamind is taught this very early on by the prisoners of the penitentiary he grows up in. Later, when he is extracting Metro Man's DNA to make another hero:
-->'''Minion:''' Sir, I think this is a bad idea.\
'''Megamind:''' Yes! It's a very, ''wickedly'' bad idea for the greater good of bad!\
'''Minion:''' But I'm saying, this is a kind of bad, that... okay, you might ''think'' is good, in your ''bad'' perception, but from a ''good'' perception, it's just plain bad.\
'''Megamind:''' Oh, you don't know what's good for bad!
* BadToTheBone: The TropeNamer song is used in the movie to great effect, as well as several other badass themes (like [[Music/GunsNRoses "Welcome To The Jungle"]], [[Music/{{ACDC}} "Highway to Hell", "Back In Black"]] and [[Music/OzzyOsbourne "Crazy Train"]]).
* BaitAndSwitch: When Hal is destroying the city, Metro Man looks like he's going to put the costume back on. He doesn't.
* BalanceBetweenGoodAndEvil: {{Invoked}} by Megamind, who learns from experience that supervillains (at least, aimless ForTheEvulz types like him) cannot exist without superheroes.
* BaldOfEvil: As the nemesis of Metro Man, Megamind's bald head brings to mind both evil supervillians like ComicBook/LexLuthor or [[ComicBook/{{Shazam}} Dr. Sivana]] and evil, [[MyBrainIsBig super-intelligent aliens]].
* BatmanGambit:
** Megamind's strongest skill is pulling off very stylish gambits like this throughout the film. At the beginning, he and Minion use one to escape from prison. He lures Metro Man into the observatory death trap by knowing Roxanne would deduce the location of his hideout and reveal it. During the end battle, Megamind provokes Tighten to punch him across the street which actually propels him close to his invisible car.
** Metro Man pulls a subtle one when he realizes that if he removed himself from the picture, Megamind would wind up taking his place as Metro City's defender, allowing Metro Man to retire.
* BeardOfEvil: Megamind himself sports a ''damn'' nice goatee.
* BeastAndBeauty: Megamind and Roxanne.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor:
** Megamind never expected to be able to kill Metro Man. When he actually succeeds, there's a short period of him celebrating and causing general mayhem... but he quickly realizes that he's now without a purpose in life and struggles to figure out what to make of his new situation.
** The people of Metro City were hoping for someone to save them from Megamind. Tighten comes in and does just that. However, it turns out that he didn't actually plan to liberate the city, only to put it under new management, which is ''so'' much worse under his "protection".
* BecomingTheMask: Megamind in his disguise as Bernard with Roxanne.
* BeingGoodSucks: Hal quickly gives up being a superhero because having superpowers didn't allow him to automatically get the girl and requires him to be a decent, noble person and think of others before himself.
* BeingEvilSucks: The film is basically Megamind realizing this. It culminates with the following:
-->'''Megamind:''' I'm the bad guy! I don't save the day, I don't fly off into the sunset, and I ''don't get the girl!''...*sigh*...I'm going home.
* BeneathTheMask: Tighten is not as heroic as Megamind thought he would be.
* BerserkButton: Megamind presses a bunch of these to get Tighten to attack him. [[UnstoppableRage Big mistake]].
* BetterTheDevilYouKnow: The citizens learned too late that their new supposed hero Tighten has only driven Megamind away so that he take over Metro City for himself. And given to the egregious damage that Tighten done to the city, the citizens all have the same mindset that Tighten is far more dangerous than Megamind; they even cheered for Megamind when he defeats Tighten by stripping him of the powers.
* BewareTheSuperman: Tighten is a strong example of this trope. The contrast between him and Metro Man is quite extreme.
* BeYourself: The rare non-{{Anvilicious}} version of this Aesop. Megamind learns that his constant defeat, as pointed out by Roxanne, has turned him into a [[TheDeterminator determinator]] who is unafraid of losing.
** The point is driven home in ''The Button of Doom'' where Megamind tries to hard to copy Metro Man's powers that he ends up almost destroying the city ''again'', and the only way he can defeat the evil invention he built is by being himself.
* BigBad: While he's still ''very'' hammy as a villain and ends up reconsidering things by the midpoint of the film, Megamind ''did'' set up the dominoes that caused a great deal of damage to Metro City, but it's Tighten that ultimately decides to ''collide'' against those same dominoes for a very petty, shallow reason.
* BigDamnHeroes:
** In a fun subversion, Metro Man tries to do this at the beginning of the movie. Too bad Megamind tricked him into going to the wrong place.
** When Tighten has Roxanne tied to the tower, Megamind who is actually Minion in disguise appears amid lasers, smoke, and flashy pyrotechnics to save her.
** When about to be hit by a bus, Metro Man who is actually Megamind in disguise appears in time to cut the bus in half, complete with superhero landing.
* BigEntrance: Megamind uses them every chance he gets.
** After his victory against Metro Man, Megamind walks down the streets of Metro City, heralded by his Brainbots performing a light show, set to "Highway to Hell."
** The crowner is at the end, where he uses his Brainbots to set up a giant holographic image of his head, then walks out on the tongue. It sounds weird, but it's really quite cool, and ''incredibly'' hammy.
--> '''Megamind''': Oh, you're a villain, alright -- just not a ''super '' one!
--> '''Tighten''': Oh yeah? What's the difference?
--> '''Megamind''': PRESENTATION!
* BinomiumRidiculus: Megamind improvises to make a spider sound dangerous--''Arachnis deathicus''.
* BizarreAlienBiology: Somehow, Minion, the aquatic alien enclosed in a water-filled dome atop a mecha-gorilla powersuit, is able to smell that Megamind is wearing cologne prior to his "date" with Roxanne.
* BlamingTheVictim: ZigZagged during one of Megamind's school days. To protect himself from being pelted by dodgeballs by the other kids, he invented a helmet that shielded him with lightning bars. But this had the side effect of launching the balls back at a higher velocity, running the risk for bigger damages. His invention did do harm, but it wasn't done with any ill intentions, in fact it was done against the other kids' intentions. But because of how Megamind is seen as the bad kid, he once again had to sit in the corner while Metro Man and the other kids get off scot-free.
* BlueIsHeroic: Averted, as the blue alien Megamind who dresses in a lot of blue is the CardCarryingVillain. Played straight as the movie goes along, as he gets chance after chance to prove himself as a hero.
* BookEnds:
** A Metro City celebration for Metro Man, then for Megamind.
** The entire plot both starts and ends with an invention of Megamind needing [[ExactProgressBar time to warm up.]]
** Hal's tenure as Titan starts when Megamind accidentally shoots the super serum into his nose with the syringe gun. Near the end of the movie, Megamind depowers Hal by sticking the syringe gun up his nose and defusing him.
* BondVillainStupidity: {{Deconstructed}}. When Megamind thinks he murdered Metro Man, he soon grows tired of his villainy since he has no hero to stop him, which instigates the movie’s plot.
* BoringButPractical: Megamind's "Forget-Me Stick" is just a baseball bat. It still works fine in knocking out a non-powered Hal Stewart as intended.
* BrainsEvilBrawnGood: This is the dynamic between Megamind and Metro Man. At least, until Brains wins, becomes bored and then creates a truly evil Brawn, inverting the dynamic.
* BrainsVersusBrawn: Megamind (Brains) and Metro Man (Brawn), again. Later on, after the latter fakes his death, Megamind replaces him with Tighten (also a Brawn, but an evil one), but since Megamind is an AntiVillain at worst, the dynamic still works.
* BrainyBrunette: Roxanne is shown to be clever, resourceful and attentive.
* BrickJoke:
** The real Bernard getting re-hydrated during the CreditsGag.
** The [[ThatPoorCat cat]] that Megamind accidentally dehydrated while cleaning up the city streets rehydrating (along with a whole lot of trash) in the rain.
* BullyingADragon:
** Megamind taunting Tighten for a fight. [[BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor And damn, does he get one.]]
** A lesser example is Megamind being taunted by the Warden at the beginning of the movie. His patronizing attitude practically set himself up for Megamind to pull a dirty trick on him and escape!
* ButForMeItWasTuesday: Metro Man and Megamind have been going on with their rivalry for so long that to them, their confrontations against each other come more across as a playful game.
* ButHeSoundsHandsome: While Megamind is "fighting Bernard" and switching between his illusions to maintain the disguise in front of Roxanne, Bernard!Megamind yells stuff about how strong, handsome and tough Megamind is.
-->'''Megamind:''' ''(as Bernard)'' I did my best... ''but he's too fantastic''.
* ButtMonkey:
** Megamind himself. He is a comedy villain, so it's part of the job description.
** Hal, before he becomes superpowered and evil, and arguably even after.
** Bernard, played by Creator/BenStiller.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:C]]
* CallBack: The "Forget-Me Stick" in the CreditsGag.
* CanisLatinicus: Megamind dubs the "spee-ider" ''arachnis deathicus.''
* CantBelieveISaidThat: When Hal tries to get Roxie to go to his 'off the hook' party, he lists the things he's arranged, including a bouncy house and a wedding photographer - you know, just in case they do anything they want to keep forever... as a memory. When Roxie passes, Hal berates himself for mentioning the bouncy house, because "chicks don't like bouncy houses, [[ComicallyMissingThePoint they like clowns!"]]
-->'''Hal:''' And I'd be watching you. Like... a dingo watches a human baby. ...OK, that sounded a little weird.
-->'''Roxanne:''' A little bit, yeah.
* CaptainErsatz: The main cast are inspired by characters from the Comicbook/{{Superman}} comics. Megamind is a [[CompositeCharacter mixture]] of Brainiac and Lex Luthor, Metro Man is Superman himself, and Roxanne Ritchi is Lois Lane.
* CardboardPrison: Megamind is imprisoned there once in a while, serving out his 88 consecutive life sentences, only to waltz his way out and continue with his evil plans.
* CardCarryingVillain: Both Megamind and Tighten openly call themselves villains/supervillains. Megamind's heart isn't really in it and just does so because he believes evil is his "destiny", whereas Tighten is merely honest about the fact that he's going to do what he wants regardless of the consequences, and if that makes him a villain, fine.
* ChairReveal: Megamind deliberately invokes this during his kidnapping of Roxanne. He arranges himself in his high-backed chair, touches up his face, and summons one of his brainbots as a substitute for a RightHandCat. Then he has the hood removed from Roxanne's head. Cue chair spin...
* ChangedMyMindKid: Played with. Metro Man returns to the fight after saying he wanted to retire as the defender of Metro City. It turns out it is actually Megamind in disguise in an attempt to intimidate Tighten in leaving the city for good.
* ChekhovsGag: At the start of the movie, Megamind's sun-powered DeathRay doesn't work when expected because it needs time to warm up ("The ''sun'' is WARMING UP?!"). During the climax when Megamind finds the gun to depower Hal, it too needs time to warm up, forcing Megamind to stall.
* ChekhovsGun: Megamind's invisible car and his dehydration gun both play a role in the climax; he leaves the gun to depower Hal in the misplaced invisible car only to find it during the final battle, and he uses his dehydration gun to survive what would otherwise be a fatal drop.
* ChildishVillainMatureHero: Despite his love for theatrics, a belief that his only place in society is being a supervillain, and all his other quirks, the titular VillainProtagonist proves himself to be a lot more compassionate and self-aware than he lets on, as well as having a clear understanding of what it means to be a true hero. In contrast, Hal/Titan/Tighten is an immature idiot who thinks having superpowers entitles him to have anything or anyone he wants, as shown by his failed attempts to woo Roxanne and his fall to villainy shortly afterward because of her rejecting him for a disguised Megamind, who actually treats her as a person instead of an object.
* CitywideEvacuation: Megamind disguises himself to train Hal the cameraman, who accidentally ingested Megamind's SuperSerum to be Tighten, his new superhero foe to replace the recently deceased [[SupermanSubstitute Metro Man]]. When Megamind reveals himself to have been training Hal to be a superhero simply because he was bored of not having an ArchEnemy to fight, [[ThatManIsDead Hal decides that as Tighten]] he would use his powers to show everyone he's done being pushed around by everyone, and after Megamind narrowly escapes Tighten's murderous wrath, [[BewareTheSuperman Tighten starts burning down everything in sight with his lasers in a fit of rage]], and the authorities are seen guiding large crowds of refugees out of the city.
* ClaspYourHandsIfYouDeceive: Megamind plays up the stereotypical "villain" body language for all it's worth.
* ClassicVillain: Megamind manifests many iconic traits of comic book villains. It's ultimately {{Subverted|Trope}} because we see that he acts as a villain because that's what he feels he is expected to be and it's what he's good at. Underneath it all he is more of a PunchClockVillain.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Metro Man apparently has a bit of this in his character. Once he's free from having to be the perfect superhero, he decides to pursue a hobby in music and decides to call himself 'Music Man' so that he can keep his logo. Roxanne and Megamind are understandably nonplussed.
* ClicheStorm: InUniverse, Roxanne is completely unfazed by all of Megamind's evil devices because they are so overused. She also implies that his plans never work because they are too predictable.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint:
** When Hal asks Roxanne to come over to his house for a date, he points out that he arranged for a bouncy castle. After displaying some weird and disturbing behavior, Roxanne is understandably unnerved and declines. Hal berates himself for being so stupid... in getting a bouncy castle, because everyone knows girls love clowns.
** When investigating the deceased Metro Man's apparently long-abandoned stronghold:
-->'''Roxanne:''' Look! This glass has ice cubes in it!\
'''Megamind:''' Yes, that's what happens when water gets cold.
** Megamind, as "Space Dad", gives Hal the superhero name "Titan", after the ancient deities of incredible power. Instead, he hears it as "Tighten", as in "to squeeze" and has no problem with that.
** When Tighten finds out that "Space Dad" is really Megamind, he gets angry because he feels Megamind lied and deceived "Space Step-Mom".
* ComplexityAddiction: Megamind, as with most super-intelligent villains, prefers devising and enacting incredibly convoluted plans to achieve his goals, and likes to map them out by stringing up pieces of paper in complex patterns.
* ConspicuousTrenchcoat: Megamind's Brain Bots hide under a trench coat and fedora in a crowd during the opening. It is bookended in the conclusion when we see Metro Man using the same tactic.
* ContractualGenreBlindness: Megamind seems to cheerfully accept the fact that defeat is inevitable in his part of the conflict with Metro Man and operates accordingly. At the beginning, he even begins winding up his current plan under the assumption that it's failed without actually noticing that Metro Man is having a surprising amount of difficulty breaking out of his most recent trap. When Megamind actually ends up ''winning'', he's as astonished as everyone else.
* ConvenientlyEmptyBuilding: During their first fight, Tighten and Megamind crash through one, starting at the roof and down through every floor, pausing for split second to show each one is a completely open floorplan devoid of any occupants.
* CorruptedCharacterCopy:
** Hal Stewart, Roxanne's cameraman, begins the story as an {{Expy}} of ''ComicBook/JimmyOlsen'', being a geeky redheaded everyman who works with the leading lady covering the exploits of the local superhero. But whereas Jimmy usually gets portrayed as a dorky and helpful NiceGuy, Hal comes off as creepy even before he becomes a supervillain.
** [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]] with Metro Man, [[SupermanSubstitute the Superman equivalent]] and HeroAntagonist to Megamind's VillainProtagonist. While a good guy, Metro Man is much more of a SmugSuper who acts like a jerk to Megamind, who's more of an AntiVillain out of expectancy than being truly evil like Luthor or Brainiac. And Metro Man fakes his death because [[HeroicFatigue tired of heroism]] since it's something he felt was thrust upon him, compared to Superman [[GoodFeelsGood enjoying being a hero for the sake of it]]. [[CharacterDevelopment He does wise up to his more jerkish tendencies as time passes]].
* CoversAlwaysLie:
** On the DVD and Blu-Ray covers of ''Megamind'', the titular character himself is portrayed as clean-shaven, while in the film he has a goatee. This conflicts with the back cover which includes still-images from the film of him ''with'' his goatee.
** Depending on the cover, the humorous or heroic postures that Tighten is shown in makes him look like he's some sort of PluckyComicRelief or heroic SideKick completely hiding his actual role as the film's true villain.
* CreateYourOwnHero: Done literally and subverted. Tighten doesn't want to be a hero.
* CreateYourOwnVillain: Had Metro Man not been such a jerk (along with the other kids and teacher) to Megamind in their childhood, the latter wouldn't have decided he was "supposed to be the bad guy".
* CreatorCameo: Co-producer Creator/BenStiller gave his voice to Bernard.
* CreditsGag: We are shown that the real Bernard finally gets re-hydrated after Minion has washed Megamind's clothes.
--> '''Minion:''' Sir, you really need to empty your pockets more often!
* CrimeSpreeMontage: After Megamind (supposedly) destroys his life-long nemesis Metro Man and declares himself Metro City's ruler, he and Minion go on a crime spree where they graffiti the city, steal all of the art from the Art Museum and have pillow fights with (presumably stolen) cash, all set to "Crazy Train" by Music/OzzyOsbourne.
* CruellaToAnimals: During Megamind's villainous banter with Metro Man, he flaunts his evilness by saying that he's shaking in his "custom baby seal leather boots" while displaying them prominently on-screen.
* CurseCutShort: After destroying Metro Man, Megamind triumphantly approaches city hall with "Highway to Hell" by AC/DC playing on the boombox Minion is carrying. Just as the song starts its chorus Megamind reaches the top step and signals for the song to end which cuts off right before the word "Hell". Minion ends up struggling with the controls hilariously causing the boombox to switch between AC/DC and "Lovin' You", but it only manages to get out the word "Hell" right before Minion smashes the boombox.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:D]]
* DamselInDistress: When Megamind and Metro Man clash, Roxanne is a parody of this; she is so used to being kidnapped and rescued that she is not fazed by it anymore. Once Tighten enters the picture, she even {{Exploit|edtrope}}s the trope, getting herself captured to motivate Megamind to stand up to him.
-->'''Roxanne:''' Can somebody stamp my frequent kidnapping card?\
'''Megamind:''' You of all people know we discontinued that promotion.
* DancePartyEnding: With [[Music/MichaelJackson "Bad"]], no less.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Megamind's parents and entire species died when his home planet was swallowed by a black hole, his only companion being Minion. He was raised in a prison (although, the inmates were nice to him). Then, he entered into school, were he was bullied by everyone, even the teacher. And it was because of their bullying that he thought that the only thing he was good at was being bad and thus decided to be [[ThenLetMeBeEvil the best at being bad]].
* DarkestHour: Tighten is rampaging throughout the city and holding Roxanne hostage, threatening to kill her. Metro Man is still refusing to come back. Megamind has given up and has gone back to prison. Minion is nowhere to be found. For a little while, the situation looks truly hopeless.
* DarkIsEvil: Megamind initially.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Megamind evolves into this by the end of the film. The major theme of The Button of Doom is him deciding that DarkIsEvil and changing his style and methods to LightIsGood. It doesn't stick.
* DatingCatwoman: Megamind falls for Roxanne.
* DeadpanSnarker: Roxanne Ritchi. Helps her get through each kidnapping by the hands of Megamind until Metro Man comes to rescue her, [[MundaneFantastic as usual]], and she can go on with the rest of her day. Also Bernard.
* DeathGlare: The warden has an excellent one as he and his guards watch Megamind escape the prison.
* DeathRay: Megamind unleashes an immense, solar-powered, satellite-based death ray upon Metro Man.
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: In a comic book, Hal would be portrayed as an EndearinglyDorky DoggedNiceGuy who's just chasing the wrong woman, and when he gets his powers he would become a model superhero (and just maybe get the girl he wants). This movie takes all of the UnfortunateImplications present in such a characterization and plays them completely straight from the very beginning, and instead Hal is a {{Yandere}} who [[EntitledToHaveYou can't take no for an answer]] and [[NeverMyFault can't take responsibility for anything]], and when he gets his powers all he does is terrorize the woman he wants and throw a temper tantrum that almost destroys the entire city.
* {{Deconstruction}}:
** The movie examines an established and relatively cordial relationship that exists between a Hero and Villain and deconstructs TheBadGuyWins plot. It shows how the villain no longer has a purpose to drive him after the death of his nemesis and the steps he takes to re-establish that relationship.
** The movie examines what might happen if a Superman-like hero never seems to cultivate a secret civilian identity once they embark on their superhero career. He still has the drive to do good and is idolized by everyone, but has no real friends, feels detached from humanity, and has no identity in which to pursue his personal dreams because of the demands of being a full-time hero. It ends up with him thinking that the villain who keeps trying to kill him is his best friend, and he's ''right'' because it's the only individual with whom he has an honest, long-term relationship.
* DeducingTheSecretIdentity: Hal realizes that Metro Man is Megamind in disguise because of the latter's peculiar way of saying "Metrocity" (Megamind pronounces it like "atrocity").
* DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment: At one point Metro Man's heart is described as "an ocean inside of a bigger ocean".
* {{Depower}}: In the end, Megamind takes away Hal's/Tighten's superpowers with the same gizmo that gave them to him.
* DesignatedVictim: The role Roxanne has been given in the conflict between Metro Man and Megamind. She responds to this with [[DeadpanSnarker little more than exasperation]].
* {{Determinator}}: Being so fully invested in his traditional dance with Metro Man meant that Megamind never thought his plans ever had a chance of succeeding. So he's been losing repeatedly over the course of his life... yet he's never let that be an excuse to give up, but instead let it encourage him to get more creative. Near the end, Roxanne reminds him of this...
-->'''Roxanne:''' The Megamind I knew would never have run from a fight, even when he knew he had absolutely no chance of winning. It was your best quality. You need to be that guy right now. The city needs you. ''I'' need you.
* DidNotSeeThatComing: As he is used to losing to the superhero every time, Megamind didn't actually expect to see Metro Man get caught and perish in his Death Ray trap.
* DiscretionShot: When Megamind (actually Minion in disguise) is about to be ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice, the screen momentarily goes black during the impact, then cuts to Roxanne's shocked reaction followed by a wide angle view of Megamind's impaled body complete with piece of building debris blocking the gory details.
* DisneyDeath: In the final battle with Tighten, Minion's helmet is smashed leaving him exposed to the air and mortally wounded. After a sad farewell to Megamind, he dies. Ultimately it turns out he's not really dead, he was just milking the moment for all the drama he can and quickly recovers when Megamind tosses him into a fountain.
* TheDitz: Hal strays into this territory at times. Honestly, his idea of romance is something you'd find in a kid's birthday party.
* DitzyGenius: Megamind. Comes to a head when he discovers that Metro Man is still alive. His reaction: ask the ethereal shade what messages he brings from beyond, and ''poke his face'' to see if he's incorporeal.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Megamind realizing Roxanne will never love him, he resolves to "Go out in style" (not to win or even fight), clearly wanting to go to jail. It's quite a bit like someone giving up on happiness in their life, and deciding to end it.
* DoggedNiceGuy: Deconstructed with Hal, who has all the dogged determination but lacks a few of the required qualities.
* DoNotCallMePaul: Tighten tells Roxanne never to call him Hal ever again. He is Tighten from now on.
* DoomedHometown: Both Megamind and Metro Man come from one. As a bonus, it turns out they are from the same star system.
* DoubleTake: When it looks like Metro Man has survived the explosion at the observatory and is coming to rescue Roxanne, both Megamind and Minion have a moment where they sigh in relief that he's alright. Then, they remember that this means he's also coming to ''arrest them''.
* DownerBeginning: The movie ''starts'' with Megamind falling to his death during the final battle, before he flashes back to how this all began. As infants, Megamind and Metro Man's home planets are seen being sucked into a black hole, with Megamind's parents placing him in an escape pod with his binky and Minion. Upon entering Earth, Megamind is shoved away by Metro Man from a lavish mansion to the prison, although he was at least somewhat raised without issue by the inmates and the Warden.
* DramaticallyMissingThePoint:
** Hal agrees to become a hero because he wants to impress Roxanne, not because he wants to fight evil.
** Hal accuses Roxanne of never trying to get to know who he really is. Hal does this while making it clear who he ''really'' is is a stalker and psychopath who Roxanne never would've ''liked'' if she actually knew his true colors.
* DramaticCurtainToss: On both the giant Metro Man statue at the beginning and the "Good vs. Evil" battle picture in Megamind's lair.
* DreadfulMusician: Just because Metro Man wants to be a musician does not mean he is any ''good'' at it.
* DrunkWithPower: Once Tighten handily defeats Megamind, he realizes that he's now unstoppable and proclaims that Metro City hasn't been freed but is under new management.
* DudeNotFunny: Bernard is insulted by Megamind's "costume" in part because he just ''killed'' Metro Man. It's kind of in bad taste considering he's running around in a tribute to Metro Man, calling it "tasteless."
* DullSurprise: Bernard barely reacts when he runs into Megamind at the museum. Justified in that Bernard thought that Megamind was a normal person wearing a bad costume.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:E]]
* EasilySwayedPopulation: The citizens of Metro City have latched onto the idea of Metro Man always-and-forever being their savior, and not letting go in the slightest, but Metro Man has an existential crisis about the fact that he and Megamind have been going at this hero-villain business for so long, formulaic-move-by-move, and he's never realized what he's wanted to do for ''his'' life. So, to free himself, he fakes his own death. When Roxanne finds out that he's still alive, she's completely furious, breaking not just his trophies, but his guitars and even a person-sized speaker over his head, claiming that he let the city down and cowardly deserted them, while Metro Man is completely unfazed, and has a completely drained and exasperated expression on his face that just says "You're just proving my point... Why are you doing this?"
* {{Egopolis}}: It's never mentioned in the movie, but after declaring the city is under new management, Tighten burns the new name into the city with his laser vision: "Tightenville".
* EntitledToHaveYou: A big part of what makes Hal so disturbing.
* EnvironmentalSymbolism: During a FallingInLoveMontage, Megamind dehydrates trash around the city in an attempt to impress Roxanne, who complains to "Bernard" about how dirty it's gotten. Later, after Megamind's disguise fails and Roxanne storms out of their date, the pouring rain rehydrates the trash, reflecting how Megamind's efforts to clean up the city are just as shallow and fake as his holographic disguise.
* EskimosArentReal: Played completely straight with Hal when he says "There is no tooth fairy, there is no Easter bunny, and there is no queen of England!"[[note]][[AccidentallyCorrectWriting Technically, he's right.]] There hasn't been a monarch of England since 1707, when the kingdoms of England and Scotland merged to form the Kingdom of Great Britain, having been in personal union since 1603. And as of September 8, 2022, there is no queen anymore.[[/note]]
* EurekaMoment: When Roxanne mentions how heroes aren't born; they are made, Megamind disguised as Bernard gets the idea to create a new hero for him to fight, kicking off the main plot of the movie.
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: Shown hilariously with Tighten, who's angry at Megamind for, among other things, "lying" to [[PaperThinDisguise 'Space Step-mom']].
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Want to defeat your arch-nemesis and rule the world? Go knock yourself out. But want to ''destroy'' the city because of [[WhosLaughingNow all your bottled-up resentment from a lifetime of rejection]]? Not cool. At least Megamind knows how to take "no" for an answer, unlike Tighten.
* EveryoneWentToSchoolTogether: Megamind and Metro Man went to the same school, though they're the only ones.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: Subverted as Megamind naturally assumes anyone who's given superpowers will use them to help the city and be a great hero as long as he/she uses them properly; he even secretly trains Tighten in hopes that the latter will follow up to Metro Man's true ideals of heroism and selflessness. Unfortunately for Megamind, Tighten has no intentions of being a hero at all.
* EvilCounterpart: Tighten is the evil reflection of Metro Man.
* EvilIsCool:
** Megamind [[InvokedTrope decides to be a]] CardCarryingVillain because he was constantly being compared to Metro Man, even in school.
** Tighten decides to be a villain for this, even more so than Megamind.
* EvilerThanThou: Megamind finds out, to his horror, that Tighten turned out to be a superpowered villain who enjoys wreaking havoc [[ForTheEvulz out of pure spite]].
* EvilGenius: Megamind. In the opening, he points out that he has an amazing intellect and a knack for building objects of mayhem.
* EvilIsHammy: Megamind points out that the difference between a villain and a supervillain is ''PRESENTATION''.
* EvilIsPetty: Played completely straight with Tighten.
* EvilLaugh: Done with great gusto, as Megamind enjoys villainous cackling.
* {{Evil Minion|s}}: Minion, naturally. He's Megamind's servant, confidant, guardian and best friend.
* EvilVersusEvil: Megamind Vs. Tighten, particularly their first fight when Megamind reverts to being evil following Minion abandoning him and Roxanne dumping him. Although it depends on whether his HeelFaceTurn can be considered complete at this point. It is [[EvilIsPetty villain]] vs. ''super'' villain.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: Hal's hair is relatively short and straight when he's normal. When he transforms into Tighten his hair becomes a curly, muffin-top afro. [[note]] This was Jonah Hill's (Hal's voice actor) signature hairstyle back when Megamind was in production. [[/note]]
* EyeBeams: Metro Man (and therefore, Tighten) has them.
* EyeDentityGiveaway:
** Megamind's watch can disguise himself or others into anyone he's scanned it with, but the only thing that doesn't change is the wearer's eye color. Anyone who remembers this will notice that the "warden" Megamind apologizes to and later "Metro Man" returning have the wrong eye color.
** The only exception is when Minion reveals himself to be disguised as Megamind towards the end; his eyes were green like Megamind's, presumably the creators had to break the rule in that instance not to risk ruining that particular reveal. One might also assume Minion uses a new watch Megamind made (since Megamind's using the other one) and thus he upgraded it to changing the eye color as well.
* EyeScream: Roxanne blows a spider ''right onto Megamind's eyeball''. Minion then slaps him in the face... and the spider ''still'' doesn't budge.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:F]]
* FaceHeelTurn: Hal/Tighten, in the second half of the film. It's debatable how much of a face he ''ever'' was, but he certainly didn't start as an outright villain.
* FailedAttemptAtScaring: When the titular character has Roxanne tied up in his lair, none of his death traps impress her, since he's threatened her so many times, and Metro Man has always managed to save her, that she's just bored by the whole thing. When a random spider appears hanging from the ceiling, Megamind pretends it's part of his plan, but Roxanne just blows the spider at his face and he freaks out.
* FakeWeakness: Metro Man claims that copper, which the observatory dome is lined with, drains his powers, leaving him helpless. This deception is part of the plan to fake his death.
* FakingTheDead: Metro Man. Turns out, he is tired of his responsibilities to the city and wants to be a musician instead.
* FallingInLoveMontage: Between Megamind!Bernard and Roxanne, accompanied by "[[SuspiciouslyAproposMusic Mr. Blue Sky]]".
* FamilyFriendlyFirearms: Megamind's dehydrator and defuser/infuser guns.
* FamousFamousFictional: [[InvertedTrope Inverted]] where Hal tells Roxanne "There is no Easter Bunny, there is no tooth fairy, and there is no Queen of England."
* FascinatingEyebrow: A common facial expression used by Megamind.
* FeudEpisode: At one point, when Megamind is dating Roxanne while disguised as Bernard, he and Minion have a falling out and break off their lifelong friendship.
* FieryRedhead: Hal, although we do not see the fiery aspect until he has powers and is destroying the city ForTheEvulz.
* FingerPokeOfDoom: Hal does this to the mayor when he attempts to congratulate Hal for "defeating" Megamind.
-->'''Hal:''' Oh, I wouldn't say free. More like... under new management.
* FistPump: When Megamind is in disguise, trying to train Tighten, he pumps his fist.
* FiveSecondForeshadowing: When Hal reveals his intention to team with Megamind, the drawing he shows of the two of them together has him holding Megamind on a leash, confirming his intention to bully Megamind even before his team up offer was rejected.
* FlightOfRomance: Hal tries to pull one of these off with Roxanne when he first reveals his superpowers to her, but is too egotistical to realize the whole experience is just uncomfortable and terrifying for her.
* FlowerMotifs: The bouquet Megamind brings to the Metro Man Museum contains yellow roses. In floral symbolism, it is commonly agreed that yellow roses represent an apology.
* FlyingBrick: Metro Man, obviously, and Tighten.
* {{Flynning}}: Megamind and Tighten engage in a round of this with lamp posts; it's actually intended to be harmless {{Flynning}} on Megamind's part, but it quickly becomes clear that the feeling isn't mutual.
* FoeRomanticSubtext:
** Like ''Woah'' between Megamind and Metro Man: Megamind goes into mourning over Metro Man, bringing flowers to his statue and lamenting about all the battles they'll never have and how it's "not the same" without him. Megamind is also visibly ''relieved'' Metro Man isn't dead when he sees his cape flying from the explosion, a long moment before his "OhCrap, he's ''alive'' and ''coming towards me''."
** There's also the scene where Roxanne takes Megamind to Metro Man's hideout. He's practically squeeing at all of the stuff and even puts on Metro Man's cape. Roxanne seems uncertain how to take his reaction.
** Megamind and Roxanne have a little bit of this going on among them, right before Roxanne hugs Megamind. Although Roxanne had no idea that "Bernard" was Megamind in disguise, it foreshadowed Roxanne and Megamind's romance that starts at the end of the movie. It's worth noting that on the DVD commentary, WordOfGod pretty much confirms that Megamind had been attracted to Roxanne for some time by the start of the movie, he just kept things professional to avoid upsetting the dynamic.
* {{Foil}}:
** As expected, Metro Man and Megamind are foils for each other, being complete opposites in level of superpowers, moral outlooks, and style. Megamind revels in his role even as he loses, while Metro Man is tired of his role, despite his victories.
** Metro Man and Tighten; same powers but completely different morals.
** And Megamind and Tighten. Both have had less than ideal lives, but Megamind learns acceptance and even pride in his role, while Hal becomes bitter and entitled. When both are given absolute power, Megamind becomes listless and purposeless, while Hal revels in his god-like state.
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** There were many hints that show Hal isn't nearly as heroic as Megamind assumed he was:
*** When Roxanne politely declines his idea of a date (which he interprets as a "soft yes on Thursday"), he vents his frustration by punching his van, and even blames it for hurting his finger. Right there, it sets up a lot of Hal's flaws: he can't take no for an answer, is prone to violent outbursts when things don't go his way, and doesn't feel responsible for the consequences of his actions.
*** When Hal is surprised at seeing Megamind and Minion in his home and suspecting a robbery, he tries to deflect them into robbing his neighbor instead.
*** After Minion hits him with the forget-me stick, [[https://i0.wp.com/img.screencaps.us/201/0-megamind/full/megamind-disneyscreencaps.com-4711.jpg?ssl=1a a book called "Best Comic Book Villains Ever" can be seen on the bed]] before Minion states that Hal doesn't look like a hero to him.
*** Also, the fact that it is a plain black book with white lettering rather than like a colorful magazine or graphic novel can foreshadow how '''dire''' Tighten's villainy will be.
*** In the training sequence, he gleefully rips a Megamind mannequin apart and melts its face with his heat vision. While played for laughs at the time, it shows he has a dark side that is willing to ignore the ThouShaltNotKill superhero standard.
*** One of the things Tighten does with his XRayVision is to spy on Roxanne.
** After being rejected by Roxanne, Hal flies off in a rage and shatters ''every window'' in the building he and Roxanne were standing on without even trying. This is the last clue before his official FaceHeelTurn that he is extremely dangerous.
** Tighten proves that he is not weakened by copper, which is our first clue that Metro Man isn't dead.
** Before Metro Man's supposed defeat there is a shot showing the broadcast of both Metro Man and Megamind. Metro Man blips out of the frame on his end and appears on Megamind's end for a split second, foreshadowing that he took the time to think everything over instead of simply defeating Megamind.
** [[https://i0.wp.com/img.screencaps.us/201/0-megamind/full/megamind-disneyscreencaps.com-2287.jpg?ssl=1 Metro Man's "skeleton" is white, instead of being burnt and charred, and his cape is mostly intact with only slight burns]].
** Megamind's completely bewildered and confused reaction to Metro Man revealing his weakness to copper before the weapon reaches full power, even asking him "You're kidding, right?". He isn't wrong.
** Not long before he quits the superhero thing, Metro Man says in his speech to the people of Metro City, "and at the end of each day, I often ask myself: who would I be without you?" Earlier we were shown Metro Man as a child playing a banjo in front of classmates indicating a long-standing interest in music.
** In the scene just before Tighten fights Megamind, he holds up a torn magazine with Metro Man carrying Roxanne. [[https://i0.wp.com/img.screencaps.us/201/0-megamind/full/megamind-disneyscreencaps.com-7080.jpg?ssl=1 The top of the magazine is torn off, and he holds it up in a way that puts Megamind's head where Metro Man's originally was (with "HERO" prominent on what's left of the cover)]]. It's also an IronicEcho, given that the roles were reversed, with the replacement idea explicit, earlier.
** Throughout the film, Megamind calls Metro City "Metrocity" (pronounced like "atrocity"), despite multiple people trying to correct him. In the climax, Hal realizes that Metro Man is actually Megamind in disguise by recognizing this quirk.
** At the beginning of the movie when a young Megamind tests his dehydration gun out on Minion and then rehydrates him, Minion plays dead for a moment before revealing he was faking. It hints that his DisneyDeath near the end is exactly that and he's really playing dead.
** In Megamind's disguise montage, an image of Metro Man is present at least twice. In his TrainingMontage with Tighten, Tighten [[UpUpAndAway flies with Megamind (as Space Dad) on top]] into a Metro Man toothpaste billboard. In his FallingInLoveMontage, a Metro Man cardboard cut-out saying "READ WORDS KIDS" is visible in the library where Megamind (as Bernard) socializes with Roxanne. Roxanne also mentions Metro Man to Megamind while he is in that disguise. Might want to guess who Megamind disguises himself in the climax?
*** Also, the "READ WORDS KIDS" speech balloon can foreshadow Tighten ([[PsychopathicManchild who has the mentality of a kid]]) realizing Megamind's ruse when the latter (as Metro Man) calls Metro City "Metrocity".
* ForcedTransformation: The De-Hydrate function of the De-Gun. It turns whatever or whoever is hit into a small translucent blue cube which can be perfectly restored through simply putting it into water. After noticing that he's falling towards a water fountain, Megamind shoots himself with the De-Gun and turns himself into a cube to break his fall in the water.
* ForTheEvulz: Subverted by Megamind. His villainous monologues are filled with rhetoric that imply he's a dastardly evil villain, but his actual follow-through is more of a PunchClockVillain who sees his wrongdoings as a form of artistic expression expected from the villain, rather than an end unto itself. However, it's played straight with Tighten, who obviously enjoys causing mayhem with complete impunity.
* ForYourOwnGood:
** Said word for word when Minion is trying to convince Megamind to stop dating Roxanne because he knows it will end badly when she finds out Megamind has been lying to her.
** Less overt, but one of the reasons Metro Man refuses to come back is so that Megamind can grow out of being the villain and become the hero he'd rather be.
* FreakOut: Hal/Tighten does ''not'' take well to all of his {{Berserk Button}}s being pushed at once.
* FreezeFrameBonus:
** When Megamind and Metro Man are bantering at the beginning of the film, there are one or two frames where Metro Man has disappeared from the observatory and can be seen behind Megamind. This is actually the moment at which Metro Man takes his super-speed walk and figures out what he wants to do with his life, as seen in flashback later on. Also slightly reminiscent of [[Film/FightClub another Brad Pitt film]].
** The other functions of the de-gun can be seen this way. The most notable are "demoralize", "de-ath ray" and "decoupage".
** When Hal is knocked out by the Forget-Me-Stick, there's a book on his bed: Best Comic Book Villains Ever
** When Roxanne attempts to leave Megamind's evil lair through the exit door, it opens onto [[ItMakesSenseInContext a pit of crocodiles illuminated with a disco ball and disco music playing in the background]]. In looking at the crocodiles on the pit floor one can see they have a beach ball, a skeleton pillow and crocodile squeeze-toy to play with.
** When [[spoiler:Roxanne uncovers Megamind's disguise as Bernard and storms off into the street, Megamind goes after her while saying [[ICanExplain the famous quote in this scenario]]. In the background we can see the sign of him that says "No You Can't".]]
* FreshClue: Megamind and Roxanne go into Metro Man's hideout and find a glass of water with ice in it, which is proof that someone was there recently. Sure enough, they turn around to find Metro Man still living there.
* FriendlyEnemies: Megamind and Metro Man. When Megamind makes his reveal at the beginning that he had captured Roxanne in his latest ploy, Metro Man plays his part with the usual "You won't get away with this!" lines. Roxanne, as said before, is not as excited to be part of the show.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: After accidentally killing Metro City's savior, the title character decides to train a new one to fight him. He chooses loser cameraman Hal Stewart to become the city's new hero, but when Tighten turns out to be a complete psychopath, Megamind himself has to step in to stop him.
* FunnyBackgroundEvent:
** While investigating Metro Man's hideout, Roxanne and Megamind come across a glass of water and wonder about the fact that it still has ice cubes in it. [[WhamShot Meanwhile, Metro Man -- who they think is]] ''[[WhamShot dead]]'' -- [[OhCrap comes in, notices them, and frantically tries to sneak out without being noticed.]] We find out a few seconds later he has SuperSpeed, making this an example of RuleOfFunny. Alternately, he just panicked.
** Some of the signs seen in Metro City during the final battle are Funny Background items as well, such as "Fauxmatoes" and "We only need two minutes to lube you."
** After Megamind destroys the door to Hal's apartment, Minion can be seen immediately replacing it.
** At the press conference after Metro Man's defeat Hal is wearing a "Game Over" t-shirt, signifying Megamind's cat-and-mouse game is at an end and later, that Hal won't be playing.
** At the beginning of the movie, when the warden has the Megamind illusion projected on him and is walking through a cell block, two cops are playing poker with an inmate. When the cops spring up to arrest "Megamind", the prisoner gleefully grabs the betting pot through the bars of his cell when their backs are turned.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:G]]
* GadgeteerGenius: Megamind superpower is his amazing intellect and his ability to build insane gizmos in a matter of minutes.
* GangstaStyle: Directly Lampshaded by Roxanne when she makes her suggestion for dealing with Tighten.
-->'''Roxanne:''' I say we go back to the evil lair, grab some ray guns, hold 'em sideways and just go all ''gangsta'' on him.
* GeniusBruiser: Metro Man's flashback reveals that he is actually a pretty smart guy.
* GeniusThriller: Becomes this in the third act when Tighten relentlessly tries to kill Megamind. Megamind has to use his devices in creative ways to keep one step ahead of Tighten, as he knows he doesn't stand a chance against Tighten in a fair fight.
* GiantMecha: Megamind's favorite kind of "toy".
* GlamourFailure: Megamind's holo-watch projects an illusion around the person wearing it allowing them to appear as someone else. However, the wearer's eye color remains unchanged no matter who they're impersonating.[[note]]The directors admit they cheat for this when Megamind impersonates Metro Man[[/note]] Also, the watch cannot hide itself.
* TheGlomp: Roxanne gives one to Megamind in the final scene.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: Whenever Tighten is about to use his eye-beams especially when he's really angry.
* GoneHorriblyWrong: Megamind's decision to make a new hero for him to fight. When Hal accidentally gets infused with Metro Man's DNA, Megamind hopes he will be a decent hero candidate. However, this starts to unravel as Hal's un-heroic qualities are revealed. It culminates when Megamind provokes him into a fight by taunting him with his relationship with Roxanne. Hal/Tighten snaps and is ready to fight Megamind to his destruction not just his defeat.
* GoodColorsEvilColors:
** Subverted in The Button of Doom: Megamind starts out trying to fulfill his new role as Defender by replacing his black "Villain" suit with a white outfit and bulky gadgets mimicking Metro Man's powers. But after realizing that he's better off fighting threats ''[[BeYourself his]]'' [[BeYourself way]], he settles with [[DarkIsNotEvil defending Metro City in his old suit]].
** Roxie starts in red, but switches to purple once she has fallen for Megamind as Bernard, and dresses in blue once she supports Megamind openly.
** Megamind's eyes are [[GreenEyedMonster green]] to represent his envy of Metro Man.
* GoodIsNotNice: As a child, Metro Man was actually a bit of a jerk to Megamind. In fact, Metro Man's treatment of Megamind when they were children was practically outright bullying.
* GoodTimesMontage: Coupled with a TrainingMontage, there's the moments intercut with Megamind training Hal in hopes that he'll become a hero and it apparently working, mixed with him in his Bernard disguise happily dating Roxie and opening up to her.
* GracefulLoser: Megamind. He is used to getting beaten by Metro Man and is cool with that, especially since he is jailed in a CardboardPrison and considers the inmate population his ''family.''
* GratuitousDiscoSequence: Megamind has a PitTrap full of alligators, a disco ball, and disco music.
* GreatEscape: In the prologue, one of the inventions Megamind invents is a dangerous tricycle that would allow him and the other inmates to break out of prison. It didn't go through to the end, as the invention was still [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome a tricycle that could easily be stopped by the guards]].
* GroomingTheEnemy: Megamind follows this trope after feeling despondent by the supposed death of Metro Man. As such, he gives the hapless Hal Metro Man's superpowers and mentors him as a supposed parent surrogate to raise him to be the hero he wants to antagonize later as a ReplacementGoldfish. Unfortunately, this plan backfires when Hal decides to simply use his powers to be a villain far worse than Megamind ever was.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:H]]
* HamToHamCombat: Fights between Megamind and Metro Man involve a lot of this. When duking it out with Tighten for the first time, Megamind tries it on his new enemy, but realizes he is too bull-headed and spiteful for this kind of duel.
-->'''Megamind:''' Oh, that's the spirit! Parry! Thrust! Parry again! Now it's time for some witty back-and-forth banter! You go first!\
'''Tighten:''' [[{{Angrish}} AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGHHH]]!!!\
'''Megamind:''' Okay, look, I'm not really sure where to go with that!
* HeelFaceDoorSlam: Once Roxanne realizes that Bernard has been Megamind this entire time, she becomes infuriated and storms off. When Megamind tries to use her statement about "not judging a book by its cover", she brutally points out that the contents underneath Megaminds cover are awful, and he doesn't deserve some snappy acceptance. This comes just after a scene where Megamind admits to Minion he doesn't want to be the bad guy. Luckily for him, unlike most examples, he gets another chance at being a good guy and stop Tighten.
-->'''Megamind''': What about everything you just said? About "not judging a book by its cover"?
-->'''Roxanne''': Well, let's take a look at the ''contents'' then, ''shall we''? You ''destroyed'' Metro Man, you took over the city and then... you ''actually'' got me to ''care'' about you! Why are you ''so evil''? Tricking me? What could you ''possibly'' hope to ''gain''?
* HeelFaceTurn: Megamind himself in the second half of the film.
* HeldGaze: Twice, once between Megamind disguised as Bernard and Roxanne after Bernard has "rescued" her from Megamind, and again with Megamind and Metro Man when Roxanne and Megamind discover him alive.
* HellBentForLeather: Megamind is this in spades, he even claims that he wears "Custom baby seal leather boots". During his first fight with Tighten, he wears two layers of leather.
* AHellOfATime
-->'''Megamind:''' If my parents could see me now.\
'''Minion:''' I'm sure they're smiling down from [[{{Hell}} Evil Heaven!]].
* HeroInsurance: Acknowledged. After all of the destruction caused by Tighten, Megamind's Brainbots are repairing all of the damage.
* HeroicBuild: Both Metro Man and Tighten are absurdly well-built and muscular, although Tighten wasn't like that before gaining superpowers.
* HeroicFatigue: Metro Man gets so tired of being a hero all the time he fakes his death.
* TheHerosJourney: Megamind tries to start this process with Hal, [[MentorArchetype becoming his mentor.]] He doesn't embrace the role and becomes the villain.
* HesBack: Metro Man saves Roxanne and Megamind from a rampaging Tighten. Except that it turns out it's just Megamind disguised as Metro Man, and Minion was disguised as Megamind.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Megamind and Minion, since infanthood.
* HighCollarOfDoom:
** Megamind just loves 'em. He even has one on his pajamas. Even his supposedly standard issue prison uniform has a high collar.
-->'''Minion:''' Just a few alterations, sir, and I will be done with your most terrifying cape yet! I'm calling it: the Black ''[=MambaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAaaaaAAAAaaaa=]''....
** Megamind's parents too, so it doubles as villainous and a piece of his culture.
* HisNameReallyIsBarkeep: Minion.
* HoldingBothSidesOfTheConversation: When Roxanne gains access to Megamind's lair, he puts on his Bernard disguise to try and escort her out quickly. At one point he's in a situation where he has to pretend to be both simultaneously in a "fight sequence" between the two. Megamind ends up repeatedly switching back and forth between his normal appearance and "Bernard", while providing both sides of the dialog. Naturally, Megamind has "Bernard" giving healthy dollops of ButHeSoundsHandsome.
* HoldingOutForAHero: Played straight with the people of Metro City. They're so used to relying on Metro Man that when he's no longer there, no one is brave enough to stand up to the villain. When Tighten shows up and defeats Megamind, the people are quite eager to accept this new hero and are shocked to discover he's even worse than the villain. It's implied that Metro Man became tired of the city's dependence on him which is what lead to his decision to retire.
* HolographicDisguise: Megamind's holo-watch projects a hologram around him which allows him to appear as someone else. During the course of the film, Megamind uses it to impersonate the warden, Bernard, Tighten's "Space Dad", and finally, Metro Man. It's also used by Minion to impersonate the warden to help Megamind escape, and Megamind himself in the climax.
* HopeSpot:
** After the death ray destroys the observatory, it appears that Metro Man emerges from the explosion and is swooping in to save Roxanne. Turns out it's just Metro Man's caped skeleton propelled by the explosion.
** For the civilians, they get one after Tighten defeats Megamind... only for Tighten to explain that they aren't ''free'', just "under new management".
** After Metro Man returns and scares Tighten away never return to [[ExactWords "Metrocity"]], it's revealed that it was Megamind, posing as Metro Man, and everyone is relieved... until Tighten returns, pointing out [[OutOfCharacterAlert that Metro Man would never mispronounce "Metro City" like Megamind did]].
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter:
** Megamind is awed when Hal, Roxanne's cameraman who's been nothing but creepy and repulsive, gets hit with the hero gun, and considers him prime hero material. In an old version of the script it was justified - Hal was being hailed as a hero when it seemed like he had pushed a woman and a child out of the way of falling debris, only for it to turn out that he did so to save himself.
** Roxanne, surprisingly. After Hal has manhandled her around the city and now brags about how he is "the good guy" and therefore deserves her, she tells him that he really is a good guy. It might just be to placate him, but later he himself lampshades her nature to "see the good in everybody, even when it's not there".
* HowDoIShotWeb: The TrainingMontage with Tighten. At first, Megamind and Minion were having trouble teaching him how to be a hero, until Minion suggested using video game-like methods, like out of ''VideoGame/DonkeyKong''. Amazingly, it works.
* HowWeGotHere: The movie begins with Megamind falling out of the sky, then goes into a flashback as Megamind remembers his life. The time in between the beginning and ending points of the flashback must've been only a few seconds to Megamind.
* HugeHolographicHead:
** Made of thousands of appropriately colored glowing brain bots.
** And in "Button of Doom", a straight example generated from the titular button.
* HumanAlien: Metro Man. [[FantasticRacism A subtle part of Megamind's lifelong angst is that his freakish appearance leads to everyone automatically discriminating against him..]]
* HumongousMecha:
** Megamind's huge robot suit he uses in his first fight with Tighten.
** The Mega-Megamind from "Button of Doom".
* HurricaneOfEuphemisms: Megamind and Metro Man's hammy, over-the-top exchange after the latter is trapped is too long to list here but includes such gems:
--> '''Metro Man:''' It's "revenge" and it's best served cold.\
'''Megamind:''' But it can be easily reheated! In the microwave of evil!
--> '''Metro Man:''' Well, I think your warranty is about to expire!\

* HypocriticalHumor: On display as Megamind relates how the hero and villain chose their names.
--->'''Megamind:''' He took the name: Metro Man, defender of Metro City. I decided to pick something ''a little more humble'': Megamind, incredibly handsome criminal genius and master of all villainy!
[[/folder]]

[[folder:I]]
* IdiotHero: Tighten, big time. Until he turns evil, that is.
* IfICantHaveYou: Tighten's reaction to Roxanne rejecting him.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Metro Man has grown weary of being the DesignatedHero [[BecauseDestinySaysSo just because it is expected of him]], so he [[FakingTheDead fakes his death]] and [[HesJustHiding goes into hiding]] so he can be left alone to do his own thing.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Minion disguised as Megamind on the skyscraper's antenna when Tighten throws it like a javelin. Since he's just a fish piloting a robot body, it just breaks his water tank and Megamind puts him in the fountain for the time being.
* ImposterForgotOneDetail: Tighten realizes that Metro Man is actually a disguised Megamind when he pronounces "Metro City" as "Metrocity".
* IncomingHam: Megamind's arrival for the final showdown happens at the top of a large skyscraper, amid a laser-light show with smoke effects, with thousands of flying robot minions forming the [[HugeHolographicHead illusion of Megamind's head]], accompanied by the opening strains of Music/GunsNRoses' "Welcome to the Jungle".
--> '''Megamind''': You dare challenge Megamind?
--> '''Tighten''': This town isn't big enough for ''two'' supervillains!
--> '''Megamind''': Oh, you're a ''villain'' alright. Just not a ''super'' one!
--> '''Tighten''': Yeah? What's the difference?
--> ''[The giant head's mouth opens, and the actual Megamind walks out on the tongue.]''
--> '''Megamind''': '' ''' PRESENTATION! ''' ''
* IndyPloy: Megamind often resorts to these, as exemplified by the following quote:
--> '''Roxanne:''' What's the plan?
--> '''Megamind:''' Well, it mostly involves NOT DYING!
--> '''Roxanne:''' I like that plan!
** There's also the fact that the brilliant stunt he pulls off at the end, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat, is only possible because he happened to be falling directly towards a fountain.
* IneffectualSympatheticVillain: Megamind [[ZigZaggingTrope oscillates between this]] and NotSoHarmlessVillain. At first, he seems more like a sympathetic villainous GracefulLoser whose crimes are of the PokeThePoodle variety - and then he apparently kills Metro Man. Then he vandalizes the city, but never does anything THAT evil. Then he creates Tighten. Oops. And finally he atones for his misdeeds, removing him from villain territory altogether.
* InkSuitActor: Jonah Hill as Hal.
* InMediasRes: The beginning of the film picks up in the final battle with Megamind falling to his apparent death. Cue Megamind offering a mid-fall explanation of HowWeGotHere.
* InsistentTerminology: Megamind gleefully points out that, while Tighten might be a Villain, he doesn't have any skill at ''presentation'' to be a ''SuperVillain!''
* InstantPeopleJustAddWater: Although not limited to just people, Megamind's dehydration gun reduces a person to a small cube that instantly reverts to normal when water is added.
* InstitutionalApparel: Until he gets his supervillain costume, Megamind, from babyhood on up, has nothing to wear but a prison issue orange jumpsuit (like all the other prisoners).
* InterspeciesRomance: Roxie is widely believed to have a romance with Metro Man, who, despite [[HumanAlien looking human]], is an alien. Later, it is revealed that this is no more than a rumor: [[SubvertedTrope Metro Man is just "not her type"]]. And then, [[DoubleSubverted she falls for Megamind]].
* IntrepidReporter: Roxanne. She locates and then infiltrates Megamind's secret lair on her own. Later she is totally willing to take on Tighten with just the advanced weaponry Megamind has created.
* InvincibleHero: Metro Man has no weaknesses and always wins his battles with Megamind. Despite the adoration he receives from Metro City, he has begun to find this life boring and lately has just been "going through the motions". He desires a change but feels trapped by the city's expectations of him. Therefore, when Megamind enacts his solar-powered deathtrap, Metro Man sees an opportunity to finally retire as the city's defender.
* {{Invisibility}}: Megamind's car.
* InvoluntarySmileOfIncapacitation: Hal gets a big, goofy grin after Minion whacks him with [[LaserGuidedAmnesia the Forget-Me Stick]].
* IShallTauntYou:
** When Megamind finds Tighten not wanting to play the game and even becoming a bad guy when he wanted him to be the hero he created, he begins revealing himself as Space Dad and then become Bernard, who Megamind used as a disguise in order to date Roxanne. This more than ignited Tighten into action, though considering how Tighten is intent on killing him, this is proven to have GoneHorriblyWrong.
** Megamind also taunts Tighten in the climax so that he would punch him towards his invisible car, which has the defuser gun he needed to defeat Tighten.
--->'''Tighten''': This is the last time you make a fool out of me!\
'''Megamind''': I made you a hero, you did the fool thing all by yourself!
* ItsAllAboutMe: Even when everyone thought that Metro Man was dead, Hal Stewart seems to think it is an appropriate time to invite Roxanne Ritchi to his party. His selfishness is made worse by gaining superpowers.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: As the city's technical dictator, there was nothing legally stopping Megamind from forcing Roxanne to be with him regardless of her feelings on the matter. It doesn't even occur to him to exert this obvious power over her at any point because he cares more about her happiness than having her for himself, and recognizes that she would never really be happy with him. Therefor, he silently lets her go, however painful that is for him.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:J]]
* JerkassHasAPoint: When Hal points out that Roxanne knows nothing about him, he's got a point. They were just work buddies; she never tried to get to know him as a friend.
** Played with in that we never see Hal being anything but a huge creep towards Roxanne, arguably justifying her in not doing so.
** He does however have a point right after that, when he tells Roxanne that she [[HorribleJudgeOfCharacter sees the good in everybody, even when it's not there]].
** He also makes a point about how thankless of a job being a superhero is - in his words "work, work, work, 24-7". Of course, becoming a stalker, criminal and terrorist in short order because of that was evil, but that's the same grievance Metro Man had which made him fake his death and quit as a superhero.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Even as an infant, Metro Man is a bit of jerk and growing up in a rich, entitled family did not help this attitude. Although he grows into a hero that honors doing the right thing, there are still aspects of his adult personality that are still a bit jerkish.
* JustEatHim: Played with. Megamind's giant head made of thousands of brain bots ''does'' swallow Tighten, but it's just for show and serves mainly as a distraction to give Megamind time to rescue Roxanne.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:K]]
* KarmaHoudini: Although Tighten ends up in jail, Megamind, who terrorized the city, "killed" Metro Man, created Tighten, caused him to go crazy by abusing his evil technology, ''and'' committed enough previous evil acts to earn 88 life sentences, is revered as a town hero when all the good things he did was to stop his own creation. Of course, he makes up for it after the events of the movie.
* KillSat: The EvilPlan that Megamind uses to finally win lured Metro Man into range of a satellite death ray powered by the sun.
* KryptoniteFactor: Metro Man is vulnerable to copper. Or so he claimed. Turns out he was lying, and his real weakness, if any, remains a mystery.
%%* KubrickStare
[[/folder]]

[[folder:L]]
* TheLancer: Minion. The foil, partner, voice of reason, and best friend to Megamind.
* LargeHam:
** Megamind, though Metro Man is not far behind him in the pork rating, and they both provide great HamToHamCombat. {{Averted}} with Tighten, who's not much for posturing.
** Also Minion, in his fake death scene.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia:
** The Forget-Me Stick. Megamind also mentions an "Illiteracy Beam" when he visits Metro Man's monument.
** In ''The Button Of Doom'' short sequel, Minion mentions an "amnesia bomb" among Megamind's old schemes. Megamind doesn't remember that one.
* LastOfHisKind: Apparently, both Megamind ''and'' Metro Man. Assuming Minion is/was actually part of a species and not just created in a lab, he might be this as well.
* LeanAndMean: Subverted. Megamind is a skinny little guy, but honestly he is more mischievous than genuinely evil, and even that is not a solid condition for him.
* {{Leitmotif}}: The riff from George Thorogood's "Bad to the Bone" is frequently used to represent Megamind, presented in different styles depending on the situation.
* LetsGetDangerous: Megamind isn't quite as incompetent as initially believed, it's just that he has a problem with not beta-testing his evil plans to iron out the kinks and he is generally [[OvershadowedByAwesome outmatched by Metro Man]]. But normally, whomever utters the quote "You [[WhoDares dare]] challenge me?" won't actually accomplish much, rather using it as a statement of overconfidence to brag about how supposedly unstoppable they are. But when you hear the phrase "You '''''dare''''' challenge Megamind?!", shit just got ''real!''
* LikeAnOldMarriedCouple: Invoked by Hal during his disastrous attempt at wooing Roxanne, as he mistakes her frightened terror for a lover's argument.
* LonelyAtTheTop: Megamind experiences this after going on a crime spree with no Metro Man to stop him; Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again, Naturally" plays in the background to emphasize this:
-->'''Minion''': Is... is something wrong, sir?
-->'''Megamind''' [dejectedly]: Just think about it: We have it all; yet we have nothing. It's just too easy now.
-->'''Minion''': I'm sorry, you've lost me, sir.
-->'''Megamind''': I mean... we did it, right?
-->'''Minion''': Uh, well... ''you'' did it, sir. Yes, you've made that perfectly clear.
-->'''Megamind''': Then why do I feel so ''"melun-choly"''?
-->'''Minion''': ''"Melun-choly"''?
-->'''Megamind''': Unhappy.
-->'''Minion''': Oh, uh... what if tomorrow, we could go kidnap Roxanne Ritchi? That always seems to lift your spirits!
-->'''Megamind''': Good idea, Minion... but without him, what's the point?
-->'''Minion''': ''Him'', sir?
-->'''Megamind''': Nothing.
* LongerThanLifeSentence: Megamind was sentenced to 88 consecutive life sentences for his crimes against humanity and Metro City. Largely meaningless, since he's able to waltz out the front door of his CardboardPrison, and back into his functional laboratory lair.
* LoonyFan: Hal is this to Roxanne and gets noticeably worse when getting superpowers.
* LoveHurts: "Did you really think I'd ''ever'' be with ''you?''" "[[TearJerker ...No.]]"
* LoveInterestVsLustInterest: Megamind and Hal Stewart are this respectively to Roxanne. While Megamind's relationship with Roxanne did start out as a lie (since he was impersonating Bernard at the time), he actually does get to know her as a person, and when she rejects him upon finding out the truth, Megamind is heartbroken but chooses to respect her wishes. Hal on the other hand believes that having superpowers will mean Roxanne will automatically fall for him once he saves her life, but when she rejects him after he recklessly endangers her life, he turns to evil, goes on a rampage around Metro City, and tries to murder Roxanne for refusing his advances.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: Non-romantic. Megamind only became a villain because he thought it was a way to gain the love and respect of Metro Man, his classmates, and later Roxie.
** Played with concerning Hal. While Roxanne's rejection of him is what caused him to decide to become a villain, it's more of a straw the broke the camel's back. As pointed out several places here, Hal was already behaving in a very entitled manner and most likely would have become a villain anyway.
* LoveRedeems: Megamind's reason to do a HeelFaceTurn.
* LovesMyAlterEgo: Roxanne unknowingly falls for Megamind masquerading as Bernard.
* LoyalAnimalCompanion: Minion is a fish-like creature and the sidekick of the humanoid alien Megamind.
