''Witch Craft Works'' is a {{seinen}} manga about Takamiya Honoka, an ordinary student who sits next to Kagari Ayaka, the most popular girl in school. Their interactions are limited because her fan club assaults him for simply speaking to her. But when the school's clock tower falls towards Takamiya, Kagari rescues him while flying on a broom. She proceeds to incinerate some strange rabbit monsters and reveals that she is a witch, he is her ''princess'' and her mission is to protect him.

The manga ran in Kodansha's ''Good!! Afternoon'' magazine from 2010 to 2022, and was compiled into 17 volumes. An anime adaptation premiered in January 2014. The anime can be [[http://www.crunchyroll.com/witch-craft-works viewed here]] legally at Website/{{Crunchyroll}}, for viewers living in the following areas: U.S.A, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark, and Central and South America.

!!Tropes include:

* TwoDVisualsThreeDEffects: Most notable when any Witch is flying past buildings and vehicles, or large familiars are on the screen.
* AbsurdlyPowerfulStudentCouncil: The ranking in the school goes from the Chairwoman, to the current reigning Prince or Princess, then the Student Council, and then the Teachers. After the Student Council President tries to break up Takamiya and Kagari, [[spoiler: Kagari fires her with her absolute power over the council, appoints Takamiya as the new President, makes herself the new Vice President and moves the former Vice President to the new position of Vice-Vice President.]]
* AccidentalMisnaming: Takamiya is unable to remember correctly the last name of Tanpopo, ''Kuraishi'', calling her "Crazy-san" or some other English words.
* AchillesHeel: Kagari is ''made of fire'' and as such is effectively invulnerable, except if [[spoiler: you attack Takamiya or separate the two, since his wounds will transfer to her due to their pact, and he's the source of her limitless magic reserves]].
* AffablyEvil: The Tower witches in general. While they do attack Takamiya from time to time, they are also seen doing somewhat regular activities as well, such as eating at a restaurant, or just singing karaoke together. The likes of Medusa and Chronoire even team up with the heroes at times depending on their current whims. Medusa eventually lampshades this, pointing out Tower witches are all about pursuing their personal desires, so there's no reason to not help out the heroes if they feel like it, even if they may change their minds just as easily later.
* AllJustADream: Takamiya has one at the beginning of episode 7, when his mother makes a shocking announcement that she had another child in an affair and introduces her. It turns out to be [[spoiler:Kagari]], and Kasumi seems happy to have an older sister like her. He then wakes up and finds her in his house cooking food, and wonders if he's still in the dream.
* AllThereInTheManual: These [[http://pastebin.com/RTGSqtBb notes]] explains specific aspects of the ''WCW'' world such as the relationship between magical and physical, the nicknames of witches and other little gems.
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: Kagari has long black hair, is at least a head taller than the protagonist and most of the other students at her school, displays an aloof and reserved personality and is the most popular person in her school and even has her own fan club. She even provides the trope picture!
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: Kasumi asks Takamiya a few in episode 4, largely wondering why he got a phone call from a girl on a Sunday, then rushed out to meet her.
* ArrangedMarriage: Between Kagari and Takamiya, set up by their mothers prior to their births.
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: According to Kagari, if Takamiya were to fall into the hands of the Tower Witches all of the following would occur: all humans would die, the Earth would explode, the Demon King would return, and giraffes' necks would get longer.
* AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever: Many witches' familiars can grow this big or more.
** Kasumi, after being double teamed by Tanpopo and Rin, makes her familiar grow so big that its head touches the clouds and one stomp takes them both out. She tops even that with Rinon's encouragement in chapter 32; her familiar's height reaches into [[spoiler: low earth orbit]]!
* BarrierMaiden: [[spoiler:Kagari's mother, Kazane Kagari. She maintains a city-wide magic field that prevents civilians from being injured or killed by magical attacks or the results of those attacks. The downside is that it drains her magic whenever this field is activated. A massive magic explosion that would have completely destroyed the city, caused by the witch Weekend, ultimately renders Kazane powerless for a week.]]
** [[spoiler: Later Takamiya makes the same contract as Kazane, allowing the Workshop Witches to use magic again and restoring the protection of the city.]]
* BatheHerAndBringHerToMe: [[spoiler:After Kayou kidnaps Honoka, she has him take a bath to "cleanse the outside of his vessel" before their wedding ceremony. Made even more disturbing when Kayou joins him in the bath to wash his back.]]
* BattleOfTheStillFrames: The fight between Chronoire and Kazane in episode 12 boils down to the two trading blows in a bunch of still shots, [[spoiler: with Kazane ultimately coming out on top]].
* BeachEpisode:
** Averted in episode 9. Takamiya mentions a beach trip with Kagari, and she's seen in a swimsuit, but then it turns out to be a dream.
** Then it happens again with Kagari making a little dream dimension where everyone has some summer fun. It was so real that Takamiya and Kasumi even get sunburned.
* BerserkButton: You don't ''try to separate Takamiya from Kagari.'' Else savor the resulting TranquilFury-fueled revenge from her.
** If someone ever actually tries to do ''anything'' to him... that person should at least write a last will before they make the attempt.
* BigBrotherAttraction: Kasumi denies that her feelings towards Honoka are nothing but sibling affection... even though she insists in ''sleeping'' together in the same bed and ''bathing'' together and gets ''jealous'' of his brother's almost-girlfriend. Subverted in chapter 31; it is revealed that she views sexual love between males and females to be disgusting. She still loves her brother but in a more innocent way.
* BigFancyHouse: Exaggerated. Kagari lives in an impossibly gigantic 41-story mansion, which has a synchronized army of maids. Her mother even lampshades how nice their house is [[spoiler:and is accordingly freaked out when it's completely destroyed during the fight against Medusa]]. She notes this is ''just'' her mother's mansion. The family has another mansion elsewhere.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: The young woman trying to help the little girl find her lost mother in episode 2. She's very helpful at first, but the instant she recognizes Takamiya, she immediately flicks the little girl off and starts attacking him. Though like with Tanpopo, she gets defeated rather quickly along with her two friends.
* BlackComedy: The anime is extremely (yet bloodlessly) violent, and Takamiya is frequently subjected to gratuitous beatdowns that would normally break more than a few bones. No one seems to even try to understand Takamiya's plight, despite his constant bewilderment at his situation. [[spoiler:Though considering the power of Kagari's mother, at least some of the violence can be rendered harmless]].
** The ending animation revels in BurnTheWitch, and the Tower Witches are cheerfully singing the ending while locked into various torture devices .
* BlankWhiteEyes: Takamiya displays some in the first episode shortly after being saved by Kagari and trying to figure out exactly what happened.
* BridalCarry: Takamiya gets this treatment frequently from Kagari whenever she rescues him.
** He actually gets to do it to her once.
* BrutalHonesty: Kagari seems to be fond of this, having absolutely no hesitation telling harsh truths.
* ButchLesbian: Kazane, at least in her highschool days. She is confirmed to be one of the most dangerous students in her school at the time, and had a deep romantic relationship with Takamiya's mother.
* ButtMonkey: Tanpopo and her Tower Witch friends. They are legitimately dangerous to muggles, but they are nobodies compared to Kagari, who repeatedly wipes the floor with them. They have no luck with other opponents, either.
* CastOfSnowflakes: Each character has a unique design and outfit. No one witch looks the same.
* CasualDangerDialogue:
** When Takamiya sees Kagari's injuries, he's understandably worried about them. However, she largely seems to brush them off as an inconvenience, even if she's been ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice.
** In episode 9, explosions start taking place around the city and school. Their teacher orders the students to leave the classroom and Takamiya attempts to comply. However, Kagari tells him to sit back down and continue taking the test, which he does for a moment. It's only after a nearby explosion burns her test paper that Kagari finally leaves the classroom to see what was going on.
* CatapultNightmare: Takamiya has one when he dreams [[SurpriseIncest Kagari is his older half-sister.]]
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: Takamiya has this, if he has the means to help someone he feels he should do it. This is exploited by various Tower Witches once they notice this trait.
* ClarkesThirdLaw: Explicitly referenced in chapter 10.
* ConservationOfNinjutsu: Kagari's early battles appear this way. Individuals battling her can take a while, whereas when she's fighting groups she beats them pretty quickly.
* CruelToBeKind: In episode 9, Kagari leads Takamiya to a hidden area below the school grounds after they suffer a massive city-wide bombing. [[spoiler:He is attacked by some of the Workshop witches, causing Kagari to retaliate against them, but the damage he sustained transfers over to her before she can knock them all out. Kasumi is also knocked out before she can do anything to protect him. Rinon then explains to him that they have to hide him because someone dangerous is looking for him. Due to what they just went through, he complies and both he and Kagari are put into a room meant to hide their presence. Unfortunately it doesn't work as Weekend's teddy bear finds him and displays a message stating she's going to find him.]]
* CrossCounter: One occurs during a battle between a giant [[BearsAreBadNews teddy bear]] and a [[KillerRabbit a giant rabbit.]]
* CurbStompBattle:
** Kagari easily defeats Tanpopo and her group that oppose her early on. Even when they try to gang up on her she still beats them up pretty fast.
*** She does this again in episode 12, when Tanpopo's gang wants a rematch. Even without her magic, which was still recovering at that point, Kagari simply grabs two of them by their head, and the other three watch helplessly.
** Kasumi easily defeats two Tower witches in episode 4 [[spoiler:after she makes her giant teddy so large its head reaches the clouds.]]
** Kagari is dealt one [[spoiler:by her mother Kazane in episode 7 after she merged with Medusa.]]
** Chronoire decides to round up all the Tower Witches swarming the city, and orders Sebastian to do this. He gathers them up by curbstomping all of them.
** Chronoire easily bests Weekend in episode 12, although it's not too surprising given that the latter has repeatedly stated she's not much of a fighter, hence all of her CrazyPrepared planning she does instead to have things work in her favor.
** Kazane easily defeats Chronoire at least twice in the anime. The first time Chronoire is seen wrapped up in bandages after said battle, and the second time Kazane simply punches her, and sends her flying with said hit.
* DatePeepers: Though it's subtle, Kasumi can be seen occasionally following Kagari and Takamiya during the second half of episode 2 when he's out shopping with her.
* ADayInTheLimelight: The anime's extra episode ("OVA") features a clash of obsessions, narrated from the point of view of the protagonist's possessive jealous sister Kasumi as she orchestrates an assault on Kagari, since Kagari's magic powers have yet to return after the outcome of the original broadcast last episode.
* DealWithTheDevil: [[spoiler:Kagari is implied to have made one with Medusa at the end of episode 6, although it doesn't get fully explored until episode 7.]]
* DebutQueue: The first couple of episodes introduces a new character or two, and several minor ones. Generally speaking, the only ones you have to remember are the ones who show up during the EvolvingCredits.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: While it takes a couple of defeats before it happens, Tanpopo and her gang of Tower witches are seen living with Takamiya and Kagari in his house, secretly in episode 7, but with his mom's blessing by episode 8. They even help Kagari with Takamiya's duel against Rinon in episode 8. Even Chronoire is running the school for a day as a favor for Kazane.
* DidntSeeThatComing: In chapter 30, [[spoiler: Tanpopo's group of Tower witches sans Tanpopo, are working for Medusa and use powerful magic to de-age Kagari to like a 4-5 year old, to a weaker point in her life]]. When they attack Takamiya, Kagari still shows up and curbstomps them, even though [[spoiler:she is still a child]]. This means [[spoiler:Kagari was a fully empowered witch before she was 4-5 years old]].
* DisproportionateRetribution: As is always the case in settings like this, once Kagari starts talking with Honoka of her own accord (the latter of whom knows about her popularity but never expressed any interest in talking with). He starts getting beaten up by some of the Student Council over it, believing him to be overstepping his boundaries as a nobody student. Kagari eventually attempts to put a stop to it, but he regularly receives floods of hate mail.
** Both Kagari and Kasumi are guilty of this to anyone who would keep/separate Takamiya from either of them, including each other. Case in point, when Kasumi 'kidnaps' Takamiya to run away on a paper mache plane, Kagari gives chase - on a huge flying ''dragon''.
* DistractedByTheSexy: Kagari attempts to help Takamiya concentrate to help him summon a magical creature. Unfortunately, he can't do it because she's pressing up from behind him with her [[BuxomBeautyStandard large chest]].
* DistressedDude: The central premise of this manga. Honoka starts out having no idea how to fight, and has absolutely no way to deal with Witches trying to capture him, and is also freaked out by the lengths Kagari goes to protect him. Even later on, he's still the weakest in any given fight.
* DoItYourselfThemeTune: "Witch☆Activity" anime ending theme is sung by the ensemble of Medusa's underlings. It can double as ImageSong for that gang of Tower witches. Another song from the Ending Theme single album is briefly shown to be something those bored, put on standby witches even sing in karaoke when off the clock.
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: Takamiya has some when walking to school with Kagari for the first time. It's largely due to all the scorn being heaped on him by her jealous fan club that spans the entire school.
* EarCleaning: Kagari does this for Takamiya as a method of drawing power from him in order to escape a very well-built prison cell. She considers it even better than a kiss (on the cheek), despite not showing any expression.
* EffortlessAmazonianLift: [[HotWitch Kagari]] {{bridal carr|y}}ies [[NonActionGuy Honoka]] even without the use of magic all the time, signifying her strength and ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend status.
* EnemyMine: Kasumi forces Tanpopo's group to help them defeat Weekend in episode 10. The latter says they're only doing it to earn their keep in the house, later stating that one bomb deactivated on the Workshop witches being held hostage would equal to one month's rent.
* EpicFail: Takamiya is told to kiss Kagari in an attempt to help resurrect her after she [[spoiler: sacrificed herself in his stead]] during episode 12. Atori, who is helping him with it, watches as he does it. He lowers himself to her lips, only to then suddenly swerve at the last second, and kisses her on the forehead instead. Atori is understandably upset at it, and Takamiya tries to argue he's not ready to kiss Kagari on the lips. Fortunately for them that kiss on the forehead works, as Atori hilariously tries to push his head down and force him to kiss her properly after his failed first attempt.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Kagari is the tall, cool type, constantly surrounded by a huge female fan club. So when she decides to stop guarding Takamiya from the shadows and spend the day by his side, he is instantly hated by her fan club for getting close to their precious "Princess".
* EveryScarHasAStory: [[spoiler:Kagari sports a long, thin, diagonal scar across her abdomen. This is why she doesn't wear midriff-baring clothing when it's obvious that she'd look good in it. Thing is, Takamiya notes that it is virtually identical to the scar on his mother's ''left shoulder''. Neither one tells him how they got it, which in Kagari's case, she doesn't remember how she got it in the first place.]]
* EvilKnockoff: During their invasion, one of Weekend's masked underlings gets locked in a fight with Kasumi. To ire of the latter, the underling mimics her every move and rides a miscolored but otherwise identical giant plushie bear summon. Of the onlooking Medusa's Tower Witches, one contemplates if this can be described as a ''doppelganger'' attack. Another one "knowingly" agrees, along the lines of calling it a doppel that does a ganger.
* EvolvingCredits: As new characters are introduced, they get added to the scenery that strolls past about halfway through the song. Some of them join the Tower Witches, while others join the Workshop Witches, depending on their affiliation.
* FanDisservice:
** When Ayaka receives ClothingDamage to her [[NonNudeBathing bathing suit]] in the HotSpringsEpisode, we learn that it's primary purpose isn't necessarily modesty, but [[spoiler:to hide the massive scar on her abdomen]].
** {{Subverted|Trope}} during the BeachEpisode: even though Ayaka's wearing a two-piece bikini, [[spoiler:her scar is always conveniently obscured or out of shot]].
** Played straight with Rinon in the same episode: under her {{Stripperiffic}} bathing suit[[note]]Just her robe and a bikini bottom[[/note]] we see that she has a ''six pack'' as well as various ([[BloodKnight presumably battle]]) scars.
* FlyingBroomstick: Goes along with the pointy-hat witch aesthetic, and is somehow magically stored within witches' robes. Every Witch is shown using a personal broomstick to either get around or patrol.
%%* ForTheEvulz: [[spoiler:Again, Chronoire Schwarz VI and Medusa.]]
* FunnyBackgroundEvent: There's quite a number of them in the anime, some more subtle than others.
** Take note of the subtle [[MobileShrubbery cardboard box]] following Kagari and Takamiya around in episode 2.
** If you pay closer attention, you'll note "someone" was stalking Takamiya for the entirety of the date, starting from the moment he answered the phone in his house. The box was merely the most obvious disguise said person used.
** Kasumi's teddy bears.
** Also in episode 2, while at the maid cafe, Takamiya tries to eat the item he ordered, but it's been completely frozen due to Touko falling on it and freezing it into a block of ice. He tries to gnaw at it, but to no avail.
* GenderBlenderName: Takamiya's first name is Honoka, which is usually a girl's name.
* GoldfishPoopGang: The group of five Tower Witches that keep attacking Kagari and Takamiya quickly turns into this. In the third episode, Kagari [[ATwinkleInTheSky blasts them all into the stratosphere]] with [[CurbStompBattle a single shot]]. They're later shown arguing about whether you can ride a llama to school, and are relegated to comedic relief.
* GoodIsNotNice: Many of the Workshop Witches, while utterly dedicated to protecting their city and the people in it, can be just ruthless and cruel as their opponents, the Tower Witches, when fighting. More specifically, Kasumi outright states that she doesn't really care what side she's on; her only concern is protecting Takamiya.
* GratuitousEnglish:
** In the first episode, as Takamiya is getting beat up by some of Kagari's fanboys and girls, the guy beating him up says in English "The best... is yet... to come!"
** In episode 8, after Rinon and her minions trash the school, she delivers a letter of challenge to him. As they leave, he says "What?", trying to contemplate what just happened.
* GreenEyedMonster: Virtually all of the school does this when they see Kagari hanging out with Takamiya. They make little effort to hide their scorn and disgust of him for being so close to her.
* HarmlessVillain: The Cherry and Star Teams are affiliated with the Tower Witches but otherwise are not a threat to Ayane. They also are rarely seen abusing their magic and are often portrayed [[VillainsOutShopping doing mundane things like singing karaoke.]] It can be argued that they are even [[MinionWithAnFInEvil minions with an F in evil]] as they hardly do anything actually ''evil''.
* HeroicSacrifice: Takamiya attempts this, asking Evermillion for power to restore the town at the cost of his life in episode 12. She seems to grant it, but then Kagari offers herself instead. [[spoiler:It's subverted when they find out Kagari made a separate deal with Evermillion years earlier to sever her contract with Takamiya if he ever tries to risk his life like that, and Takamiya actually saved the town with his own power, and therefore didn't require Evermillion's help for it.]]
* HotSpringsEpisode: Chapter 33 is about Honoka and Ayaka going to a hot springs inn together.
* HotWitch: Ayaka Kagari, [[PlayingWithFire in both senses of the word.]]
* HumanoidAbomination: Kagari. Let's put things simply: she's not on fire when doing magic, she IS fire.
** In general, the most powerful witches aren't quite human any more, and their human appearance starts to slip if they're pressed in battle.
* HypocriticalHumor: At the end of chapter 38, Kagari mutters that the Mikage siblings are unimaginable deviants [[spoiler:while adding yet another photo of Takamiya to the StalkerShrine in her basement.]]
* IdiosyncraticEpisodeNaming: Every chapter and episode are titled "[[CharacterNameAndTheNounPhrase Takamiya-kun and X,]]" with a few exceptions ("Takamiya-kun VS. Weekend/Alciana," "[[LowerDeckEpisode Weekend and Chronoire's World]]" and "[[OddNameOut Living under the same roof as Kagari-san]]").
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Kagari's first overt act to protect Honoka is to cover him from Tanpopo's bunny army, and when he wakes up, she's still over him... because of all the blades through her body holding her up. Her not really caring about the swords through her torso and arms is a first hint of just how powerful a Witch can get.
* ImpossiblyCoolClothes: Some witches have some quite unrealistic outfits... but their clothes are really cool and awesome, so who cares.
* ImprobablyFemaleCast: There's no indication that women are naturally better at magic--one male wizard does appear, and he seems to be quite powerful--but the vast majority of spellcasters are female.
** Mikage-sensei mentions that males in magical families don't have a high standing, so it is likely that it's just the women who have a more prominent role when working spells, which would explain why there are so many more women shown.
* InnocentInnuendo: One of Tower Witches calls herself out on being an idiot, for even trying to get through to her comrade cat-eared rabbit-wielding witch girl, Tanpopo, as the latter is oblivious to how saying that Ayaka is only after ''the white stuff'', which is ''inside his body'', could cause any amount of misunderstandings. Honoka himself, however, is dumbfounded thinking he didn't hear that right.
* InsaneTrollLogic: According to Kasumi, she is not a bro-con. She just wants to marry her brother and have three kids with him, but that doesn't mean she likes him like ''that.'' Further, she believes no sex would be involved (since that would be disgusting) since she took her mother's word that [[DeliveryStork babies come from storks]] and never grew out of it.
* InSeriesNickname: Ayaka Kagari is either called "Princess" by classmates and teachers alike or "Fire Witch" by other witches.
* InstantFanClub: Kagari is almost always surrounded by starry-eyed female students and, when Takamiya's with her, furiously jealous students of both genders.
* InvisibleToNormals: The Witches when wearing their Witch outfits, although it doesn't become relevant until episode 8 [[spoiler:after Kagari and the others help Takamiya to win his fight against Rinon.]]
* KillItWithFire: Kagari's signature style of fighting.
* KnightTemplar: Kagari once more. She justifies using magic on bullies attacking Takamiya on the basis 'If someone attacks Takamiya, that person must be a chaos witch.'
* LastNameBasis: Honoka is called "Takamiya" by everyone, except his family, meanwhile he always calls Ayaka "Kagari".
* LivingWithTheVillain: The Tower Witches under Medusa, including Medusa herself, eventually start living at the house of the Takamiyas. One amusing omake has Ayaka in charge of feeding them. She throws them a bar of chocolate to be shared among all six of them while she feeds Honoka blowfish nabe.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Takamiya initially, when he's attacked for no apparent reason. And also his mother, and pretty much anyone that's not a witch.
* LoopholeAbuse: In episode 12, Takamiya makes a wish with Evermillion to restore the town at the cost of his life. Kagari then intervenes, telling Evermillion to take hers instead and collapses, presumably sacrificing herself for him. [[spoiler:However later on a FlashBack reveals Kagari made a contract with Evermillion that if Takamiya's life was ever in danger, his contract with her would be severed, so he couldn't fulfill that contract. On top of that, the town was saved using his own power, so Evermillion also tells him he didn't that contract.]]
* MassiveNumberedSiblings: According to Natsume, Touko has ''eleven'' sisters.
* MeaningfulName: Chronoire Schwartz. In the original it is written ''kuro noir schwarz'' i.e., "black" in Japanese, French and German.
* MinorInjuryOverreaction: Two happen in episode 9:
** Kagari gets worried about training Takamiya after he gets hurt from fighting her summon and says they should stop. His injury? A scraped elbow.
** Tanpopo was going to use a gym she rented, but then suffers a stubbed toe and sprained ankle before being able to step foot in it. They decide it's better to treat that "life-threatening" injury first.
* MirrorMatch: In the Weekend arc, Kasumi fights a minion who can copy others' magic. This results in the minion copying Kasumi's giant teddy bear {{Familiar}} and mirroring its attacks.
* MoodWhiplash: Near the end of episode 10, Takamiya starts seeing visions of Weekend setting off more bombs and other things going wrong. The music continues playing a dramatic tone, and ends abruptly when Kagari headbutts him to knock him out, complete with comedic sound effect, who states that he'd be in danger if he keeps using his powers. As Weekend approaches Kagari and Takamiya, the cheerful BlackComedy ending song plays.
* MumLooksLikeASister: Kagari's mother, Kazane, looks more like her sister than her mom. At least Kazane behaves like an adult mature woman, meanwhile Komachi, the mother of the Takamiyas, is a self proclaimed crybaby who looks just a bit older than her children.
* MundaneUtility: A moment occurs in Episode 8, as Kagari's friends are talking in a cafe. The scene switches to an outside shot of the building and shows a pair of Tanpopo's magical rabbit soldiers walking past while carrying groceries from a shopping trip.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Any witch with '-End' in their actual witch title. It used to indicate a witch who could ''end the world'' with their power alone but nowadays, a witch who reaches a sufficient level of notoriety and power is given this - similar to reaching Hall of Famer status. This also doubles as a RedBaron since any Witch who has this has more than ''earned'' it. Both Kagari Kazame and Chronoire Schwartz are 'End Witches'.
* NaughtyNurseOutfit: Instigated by Takamiya's mom no less.
* NewTransferStudent: At the end of the first episode, ''five show up at once''. One of them is the girl who'd just spent half the episode trying to kill [[OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent Honoka]], and it's a safe bet that the other four are after him as well.
* NoEnding: The anime only lasted [[TwelveEpisodeAnime 12 episodes]] (13 if you count the [=OVA=]) and thus ended with many subplots unresolved, such as the Tower Witches and Medusa still at large, Chronoire's interest in Evermillion unresolved and the shared past between Honoka and Ayaka still a mystery. The only sense of finality is that Honoka accepts magic as part of his everyday life.
* NonActionGuy: Takamiya, although not by choice. He wants to learn how to fight, but Kagari won't train him for some reason, and instead only focuses on showing him techniques to escape. By episode 9 she relents, although only because Kasumi was planning to teach him in secret, which she [[ClingyJealousGirl isn't too fond of.]]
* NonNudeBathing: In Chapter 33, Honoka and Ayaka take a bath together at the hot springs, but Ayaka has enough modesty to wear a swimsuit. This still doesn't make Honoka any less flustered.
* NoodleIncident: Kasumi mentions being bullied at school due to her brother being too close to "The Princess", Kagari. When he asks about if she's still being bullied, she simply mentions that he wouldn't want to know what she did to them.
* OneHeadTaller: Inverted. Kagari is at least one head taller than Takamiya (as best seen in chapter 12). It's not quite as extreme in the anime, but she's still significantly taller and more imposing than her "princess."
* OlderThanTheyLook: Both Kazane and Chronoire have been around since at least ''the Crusades''.
* OrderVersusChaos: The ideological divide between the Workshop and Tower witches largely boils down to this. Workshop witches believe in upholding the established order and policing the actions of witches to safeguard the lives of muggles. The Tower witches meanwhile believe in having the complete freedom to pursue whatever power or goals they like. As such, not all Workshop witches are good (like some members of the Kagari clan), and not all Tower witches evil (with the likes of Chronoire and Medusa being AffablyEvil and Kazane herself being a former Tower witch who was defined by beating the crap out of any evil beast or witch she found.)
* OverdramaticDatingCommotion: As Ayaka has a crazed fanclub, they get furious at the mere sight of seeing their idol with a boy like Honoka, whom Ayaka only cares about and is affectionate toward him.
** They once call him lame and shoot him some serious death glares, even going as far as wishing death upon him when Ayaka leans in to teach him.
** PlayedForDrama when the leader of Ayaka's fanclub along with her posse beat up Honoka away in a hidden place at school just for "ogling [their] sublime princess."
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Any of the "End Witches" were originally this, although nowadays, a witch could earn this designation "just" by being TheDreaded.
* PlayingWithFire: While it's not her only power, Kagari uses a lot of fire-based magic.
* POVBoyPosterGirl: Takamiya is the OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent POV protagonist, but Kagari is the powerful witch who moves the plot by protecting Takamiya from any threats.
* PowerIncontinence:
** Touko seems to have no conscious control over her ice powers and they mostly manifest when she feels threatened, though not necessarily in a way that would help. Examples include tripping onto a parfait and freezing it solid, spontaneously creating a snowman to hide behind, freezing herself into a block of ice when bullied by Kagari, and creating a glacier when Kagari throws her into a pack of Tower witches.
** Kagari, while generally stoic and in control, will spontaneously set things on fire or raise the temperature around her when angry or excited. This happens most often when people bring up Takamiya around her, especially in a romantic context.
* PrettyFreeloaders:
** Averted with Kagari, who does some chores and cooks for Takamiya.
** [[spoiler:Played straight with Medusa's underlings, who are also in his house, hiding in Kagari's room due to a deal she made with Medusa. They later overtly move in with his mother's permission, but they seem to just eat and sleep there without paying rent]].
* RedBaron: A schoolgirl who is secretly a member of the city-protecting witch circle gets introduced first as a delinquent trying to destroy the protagonist's position of power at his high-school. Her nickname is "Bearslayer", owing to the fact she killed a vicious rampaging predator with her bare hands on one occasion in the past. The animal was a large tiger, and the tiger's ''name'' was Lucky Bear.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: This seems to be the case for some Witches, as Chronoire and Kazane have been alive since the Crusades. This is also implied for the more powerful witches. FridgeLogic sets in when you realize that Kazane went to school with Takamiya-kun's mother, Komachi, despite being centuries old at that point.
* RememberTheNewGuy: A minor one in the manga, as Takamiya's sister isn't even mentioned or hinted at until chapter 7 where Takamiya narrates who she is. This is rectified in the anime where she gets an appearance[[note]]seen from behind at first, then in the background stalking Kagari and her brother[[/note]] as early as the second episode before her introduction in the fourth.
* RobeAndWizardHat: The main characters wear them so they can be [[WeirdnessCensor invisible to]] [[InvisibleToNormals regular people]].
* RunningGag: You can expect something to go wrong every time Kagari's mother [[TemptingFate mentions everything going fine]].
* SaveThePrincess: Both beautifully inverted and lampshaded at the same time. Kagari outright tells Takamiya that not only is ''he'' is her princess, ''she'' is one who needs to protect him.
* SceneryPorn:
** The detail added in the chapters are breathtaking.
** The anime also loves to show detailed backgrounds of the city. The flying scene in episode 3 is a prominent example.
* ScrewTheRulesIMakeThem: Kagari, being elected the Princess by the school, is second in power at the school (only the administrator ranks higher, which also happens to be her mother) and uses this power to fire the student council president. She then names Takamiya as the successor. She decided to do this to curb the GreenEyedMonster jealousy going on around the school due to them being close.
* SealedInsideAPersonShapedCan: [[spoiler:Evermilion aka the "White Princess"]], sealed inside [[spoiler:Takamiya]]
* SealedWithAKiss: [[spoiler:The final chapter ends with Takamiya and Kagari kissing.]]
* SecretLegacy: Takamiya's family turn out to be magical beings, something he didn't know until currently.
* SecretTestOfCharacter: Evermillion does this to Takamiya in episode 5. When Kagari turns to stone, the former asks what he's willing to give up to bring her back. He wonders if she meant his soul, but she says reversing petrification doesn't need that big of a commitment. She then asks for his eyes, and he willingly accepts without a moment of hesitation. [[spoiler:She balks at his immediate answer, and tells him that she wasn't serious about it, but was testing his trust in Kagari, since he was responsible for her turning in the first place, so he needed to have a strong bond with her to reverse the condition.]]
* SelfParody: The anime official soundtrack has a "Watch Activity" song, which is not used in the anime itself. The Anime has an ending theme by the name of "Witch☆Activity" though, of which the "Watch Activity" is a recognizable spoof (music itself, guys instead of girls as vocals, both witches and The Watch being part of the story, a song in {{Engrish}} instead of a song with GratuitousEnglish, lyrics).
* ShipperOnDeck: Takamiya Komachi ships her son with her ex-girlfriend's daughter!
* ShoutOut:
** The cover of the single for the ED theme ''Witch Activity'' looks suspiciously like the album cover of Kraftwerk's 1978 album ''The Man-Machine''.
*** The subsequent Witches Non Stop and soundtrack album's [[http://i.imgur.com/gsLTcG7.jpg covers]] followed suit, making it a series of...[[spoiler: [[StealthPun witch Kraftwerks]]]].
** In episode 2, after Kagari delivers a CurbStompBattle yet again to Tanpopo's group, she then breaks through the floor where Mei was trying to escape with Takamiya. The latter then wonders if she's [[Franchise/SuperMarioBros Mario with a superstar.]]
** Kasumi has the word ''Seigi'' (justice) on her back, written in the same way as the Marine soldiers from One Piece.
** Kasumi and her friend Tanuma are fans of the anime ''[=OrePotato=]'', which is about a girl who gets into a romantic relationship with her big brother. It's probably a reference to ''Literature/{{Oreimo}}'' (and a joke about how blind Kasumi is to her own feelings towards Takamiya). Coincidentally, "imo" is a Japanese word for "potato."
* ShowDontTell: Kagari's usual method of trying to teach Takamiya various spells. She will explain some of them, but she usually tells him to watch as she does one.
* SickEpisode: Chapter 50 where Ayaka collapses with a high fever and Honoka looks after her.
* SleepCute: Takamiya falls asleep on Kagari's shoulder after a lengthy broomstick-flying lesson. It's adorable! He does it from time to time, indicating how much he trusts her.
* SlidingScaleOfSillinessVersusSeriousness: A giant Teddy bear wrestling a giant evil bunny knight and witches arguing with a waitress as to whether a llama counts as a pet; yes, it's this ''silly''. Even when the story gets serious, there still remains some whimsical humor.
* SortingAlgorithmOfEvil: The villains Takamiya and Kagari face off against grow stronger and stronger as the show goes on.
%%* SpitTake:
%%** Chapter 9, and several characters do it in the anime as well, so much so that it becomes a RunningGag with Kazane not wanting anything strange to happen while drinking tea.
%%** Just as Kagari's mom was admiring her mansion on top of the hill behind her office during sunset, '''BOOM!'''
* SpoilerOpening: The opening gives away some plot-related elements that occur later in the show. [[spoiler:Such as Weekend showing up, and engulfing Kazane in an explosion.]]
* SquishyWizard: While some of the lower-ranked Witches are noticeably 'squishy', most of the higher level Witches are definitely NOT. Both mother and daughter Kagari, in particular, are well-known for their "brute force" tactics even without using magic. Kagari has incredible physical strength and fighting skills thanks to her mother's TrainingFromHell to avert this. Chronoire is also quite a lethal fighter, and even takes out dozens of other Tower witches on her own near the end of the anime simply because she was bored.
* StalkerShrine: Chapter 38 reveals that the [[spoiler: stoic Kagari]] has a secret room filled with nothing but photos of [[spoiler: her princess Takamiya]].
* StatuesqueStunner: Kagari is very tall, but considered beautiful by just about everyone.
** Her mother, Kazane, is even taller.
* StealthPun: The soundtrack albums for the anime all have covers spoofing the cover art of various albums by the techno group Kraftwerk, making them witch Kraftwerks.
* TheStinger: At the end of episode 5 after the credits, Chronoire is attacked by the Workshop witches and captured. Kazane then proceeds to torture her because of the latest incident in that episode which caused the former's mansion to collapse.
* SummonMagic: Generally every witch has a familiar that they can interact with and also summon one or many of, such as in the case of Tanpopo's armored rabbits. Some of them can even summon {{Kaiju}}-sized renditions that they can control.
* SuperDeformed: The witches singing in the ending song.
* SweetTooth: Both Kagari and her mother like their sugar with a bit of tea.
* TakenForGranite: Medusa's power, as you can expect. Takamiya is immune to it [[spoiler:due to being the vessel for Evermilion]]. [[spoiler:Kagari is ''not'' immune to it, but in a strange way; when Takamiya loses confidence in Kagari's ability to win against Medusa, the protection he grants to her is weakened]].
** He's not quite immune to her power so much as she deliberately kept her eyes covered and arms bound in the same straitjacket she was imprisoned in, just to see if she ''could'' capture him while bound.
* TakingYouWithMe: In episode 10, Rinon tries to negotiate more time to find Takamiya after Weekend sends a Workshop witch rigged with explosives to go off after thirty minutes if he isn't brought to her. The latter then taunts them further, by stating that she's weak physically, and wouldn't be a match in a fight with the former. But even if they defeat her, the bombs would still go off, so there would still be casualties.
* ThatCameOutWrong: Kuraishi just has to say it... [[spoiler:she actually means Evermilion, the White Princess.]] At least her friend does realize and warns her about the other ''implications''.
--> "We are after your body. The white thing in it."
* TemptingFate: Happens several times.
** When Takamiya mentions how he thought Kagari would be regularly getting love letters, and then he ends up getting hate mail when he opens his locker.
** Kazane mentioning how well things are going, only to then see a giant explosion happen either on the news or within view of her office. Later she mentions the city being peaceful again in episode 7, only to have a giant explosion occur right outside her office again.
** Takamiya tells Kagari that he hopes things will be quiet for a while at the end of episode 12. Immediately after he says that, Tanpopo and her gang shows up demanding a rematch with Kagari. However, StatusQuoIsGod is in play here, and Kagari defeats them easily even without using magic.
* TinyGuyHugeGirl: Kagari is at least a head taller than Takamiya.
* TortureForFunAndInformation:
** Kazane is infamous for her talent at torturing enemies, but she also considers it one of her hobbies as well.
** When a scheming villain witch by the name of Weekend moves her plan to corner our protagonists into the violent phase, Chronoire the unclear agenda self-fulfilling villainous witch decides she'd like to have a piece of the mastermind. The plot follows the protagonists, and the short comic relief scene at one point has Chronoire together with her anthropomorphic crocodile helper wielding a hair-trimmer in a mock of a barbershop setup. Chronoire's idea of an incentive for the distressed BoundAndGagged nameless [[{{Mook}} pawn Witch of the invasion force]] to speak of Weekend's whereabouts -- is a threat to vandalize her victim's long hair into something more appropriate to the surrounding apocalypse landscape.
* TrainingFromHell:
** Kagari subjects Takamiya to this in episode 9. His first practical training is to fight against her giant summoned fire wolf. She then drops him off a skyscraper for his next lesson.
*** Hilariously [[PlayingWithATrope Flip Flopped]] as in between attempts she chastises Takamiya for a scraped elbow and suggests they stop for the day.
** In episode 10, Kagari singled-handedly stops a Tower Witch without the use of her magic by kneeing her in the face. When both the Witch and Takamiya inquire as to how, she tells them that she was forced to fight really difficult opponents without magic while growing up. A FlashBack then shows her mother atop some giant vicious looking monsters, while telling Kagari and Rinon they can't have dinner until the monsters are defeated.
* VillainDecay: Tanpopo's group of witches. While they were certainly a threat early on, by the latter part of the series they largely end up helping the Workshop witches more than hindering them, and being played mostly for comedy relief.
* VillainousRescue:
** Tanpopo dispels the bombs set on the hostage Workshop witches that Weekend set up in episode 10, buying a little bit of time to prevent her from killing them.
** Medusa ends up rescuing Kasumi in episode 11, then grabs four of the Witches in Tanpopo's group, presumably to punish them for not helping the latter in that fight.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: When something interrupts Kagari's precious school life with Takamiya and/or comes between them, TranquilFury and DisproportionateRetribution abound. Not even family is safe.
* WhamEpisode: In episode 9, the BigBad, Weekend, appears. [[spoiler:She tells Kazane that her plan was to use Chronoire and Medusa as pawns to find out where Evermillion was at, and then take Takamiya once she found out where he was. She also releases a magical bomb to drain Kazane's magical powers by forcing her to use her magic to prevent the city-wide explosion from hurting anyone, although it drains all of her magic in the process. Weekend then starts looking for Takamiya, and seems to have found him rather quickly despite the Workshop witches attempting to hide him.]]
* WhamLine: Kazane gives one to Kagari in episode 7, [[spoiler:after the latter merged with Medusa. She tells her daughter that Evermillion doesn't like corruption, and by merging with her, Kagari lost the powers of invincibility granted to her by the White Princess.]]
* WorldHealingWave: In the climax of the Weekend arc, Honoka uses Evermillion's power to create a wave of magic that restores the city that was destroyed by Weekend's bombs.
* WoundedGazelleGambit: The former student council president does this towards Rinon in episode 8. She basically tells the latter that Takamiya did horrible things to her and then usurped her position at school. [[spoiler:She then immediately tries to clarify and says it was all a joking lie, but Rinon was apparently too fired up by that point to hear that part, and believes he really did all those things. This backfires on her after Rinon finds out that she lied about all of it.]]
* XanatosGambit: Weekend has several traps in store to ensure she can capture Takamiya. [[spoiler: She first takes Kazane out of the picture by setting off a massive bomb throughout the city and forcing her to use up her magic to save it. Then she captures some Workshop witches and rigs them with explosives set to go off if they don't bring Takamiya to her. And even after she's captured, she sets off some regular explosives to escape a cell the Workshop witches put her in. And then sets off some other explosives to take out the remaining workshop witches gathering around the field in the school]].
