''Violence Jack'' is a [[AfterTheEnd Post-Apocalyptic]], DarkFantasy anime and manga series by Creator/GoNagai that was released from 1973 to 1990. A StealthSequel of sorts to ''Manga/{{Devilman}}'', the series is particularly infamous for not only including large amounts of sex and gory violence, but also has cameos from several of Go Nagai's other manga as well. In fact, many of the chapters seem to be dedicated to taking classic Go Nagai series and then {{Deconstructi|on}}ng them by placing them in ''Violence Jack'''s brutal setting.

The entire Kanto region of Japan is destroyed in both an earthquake and a volcanic eruption. Any survivors are now forced to fight for their lives, due to biker gangs and warlords having taken over. The worst of them is [[BigBad Takatora]] [[EvilOverlord Dōma]], also known as the Slum King, who practically has all of Kanto under his control.

Luckily, there's Violence Jack, a mysterious, gigantic man with an equally gigantic knife. Unluckily, he's not exactly careful about collateral damage or danger to bystanders, although he's still the closest approximation to a good guy in this CrapsackWorld. Jack travels around Kanto, killing warlords and, eventually faces Dōma himself. However, just as it seems that peace is finally on the threshold of being returned to Kanto, [[HijackedByGanon an old foe from a previous world returns]], revealing some surprising twists about who Jack really is.

Violence Jack has three {{OVA}}s based on three different arcs from the manga (Harlem Bomber, Evil Town, and Hell's Wind). All three have been released in the US, the UK, Italy, and France, but were heavily censored (especially Evil Town). Italy got lucky with Evil Town and got the least censored version, leading many to seek it out. It wasn't until a few years later that uncensored editions were released. Later, in March 2022, Creator/DiscotekMedia announced that they had gotten their hands on the masters for the [=OVAs=], and would be releasing completely uncensored HD remasters of all three on Blu-Ray later that year.

The series got a short revival in 2005, a short 2 Volume adventure under the title of ''Shin Violence Jack''. And 2021 saw the start of a remake under the pen of Yuu Kinutani, called Violence Jack 20XX.

As for the manga, the only place it's ever been released outside of Japan is Italy and very few arcs have been scanlated into English (though this is slowly changing).

No relation to ''WesternAnimation/SamuraiJack''.

----
!!''Violence Jack'' contains examples of:

* AbsurdlySharpBlade: Jack's signature jackknife.
* ActionDuo:
** Mondo and Tatsuma in the manga.
** Iyamon and Bau also count in ''Shin Violence Jack''.
* AdaptationalModesty: In the manga, Blue Kid wore a black leotard with two holes cut out exposing her breasts. In the OVA she wears red leather jacket over a corset.
* AdaptationalVillainy: [[DirtyCop Kawamori]] was never a good person to begin with in the manga, however he is significantly more evil in the OVA. While in both the manga and the anime he was involved in the rape of Aira and the other women, as well as shooting the mayor out of panic, the anime tones up his evilness by [[WouldHurtAChild shooting a young girl at the beginning]] for stealing a loaf of ham, [[ChronicBackstabbingDisorder killing both the mayor and his allies]] [[DirtyCoward then switching sides with Mad Saurus to save his own skin]], murdering Rikki and attempting to rape Aira again. He meets a [[KarmicDeath well deserved fate by being stabbed in the back by Blue]].
* AfterTheEnd: Violence Jack is probably the first post-apocalyptic anime/manga series, even pre-dating ''Manga/FistOfTheNorthStar''. Its depiction of a post-apocalyptic world as a desert wasteland infested with biker gangs also predates ''Film/MadMax''. ''Violence Jack'' influenced ''Fist of the North Star'' and possibly ''Mad Max''.[[note]]And to a lesser extent, Manga/{{Bobobobobobobo}}.[[/note]]
* AllLovingHeroine: Aira Mu, even after all the bad things that happen to her, from being raped to seeing all her friends killed, she still maintains a compassionate heart and refuses to hold grudges against anyone.
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: During Jack’s first confrontation against the Dragon Army, it is heavily implied that Jun Honoo developed feelings for the giant after saving her during the ''Hell’s Wind'' arc. Once getting shot by the Dragon soldiers, Jun is then trapped in another dimension having a [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything rather suggestive]] healing vision after which Jack apologizes to Jun and sends her outside of Kanto. It is hinted that Jack acknowledges Jun’s love, but cannot return it because he isn’t meant to live as an ordinary human being.
** The same could be said of Child Jack and the sassy schoolgirl he saved in ''The Backcountry Academy''
* AmbitionIsEvil: In the El Dorado arc, there were rival gangs attempting to gather large amount of gold bars and expand their territory. The main example of this is Saotome, due to [[SlowlySlippingIntoEvil being crazy with his ambition]] to gain control of a gang called The Flesh Eaters to the point of being AxCrazy. Both his partner and Jack notice, but faces KarmicDeath when the leader of the Flesh Eaters kills him with a rocket launcher. The boss also dies when Jack slices her vertically (but not enough to cut her in half). Tellingly, greed will give you a very nasty demise.
* AmnesiacHero: Having no idea who he is (and generally not caring), the titular character named himself after his violent fame -- Violence -- and iconic knife -- Jack. [[spoiler:Being Akira Fudoh, he has no recollection of the events that occurred in ''Manga/{{Devilman}}''.]]
* AnchorsAway: Jack first appears in ''Shin Violence Jack'' carrying an anchor secured by a chain that he tied to his leg. He uses it to great effect as a weapon against the Marvel Pirates.
* AnimalMotif: Jack and tigers. His art in the Harlem Bomber OAV makes it more blatant, giving him a mouthful of a "tiger-like" fangs. In the subsequent [=OAVs=], he has pronounced canines (to make the teeth reference more subtle), and his wild hair style branches across his cheeks, to invoke a tiger's whiskers/stripes.
* AnyoneCanDie: With possibly the exception of Jack himself (but even he tends to exit his latest fight substantially injured ([[MadeOfIron not that it stops him in any way]]), just about everyone in the manga is eligible for death at any time, almost always at the hands of whichever new BigBad has taken the helm for the current arc.
%%* AntiHero: Jack himself. He starts off as a type V, but eventually softens into a type IV as the series progresses. Administrivia/TypeLabelsAreNotExamples
* ApatheticCitizens: Whenever bullies rape Shingo, the passersby not only do nothing, but ridiculed him for his androgynous appearance.
* ApocalypseHow: Class 0 in the manga, class 1 in the [=OVAs=].
* TheApunkalypse: Possibly the first example in manga.
* ArmiesAreEvil:
** Generally, the biggest villains will have their own armies, starting with Takatora Doma himself. Subverted in the case of good guys like orphan boy Ryou Takuma and others who lead armies against Takatora.
** Special mention goes to the Marvel Pirates in ''Shin Violence Jack'', who are all former U.S. Marines who decided to go rogue and steal treasure from the now-partially submerged Kanto region. They use their training to murder, rape and pillage throughout Tokyo Bay.
* ArtShift: There is a big difference between Jack's depiction in the Harlem Bomber OVA and in subsequent [=OVAs=].
* BackFromTheDead:
** [[spoiler:Violence Jack is Akira Fudoh reincarnated as the Human Avatar of Death.]]
** [[spoiler:Jinmen]] reappears in ''Shin Violence Jack'', having possessed the leader of the New Shu Army, even showing off his ability to take the souls of his victims into his shell.
** [[spoiler:The Slum Queen and Miki Makimura appear at the end of volume 1 of ''Shin Violence Jack''. The former refers to herself as "Queen", while the latter has the body of a ''dog''.]] However, [[spoiler:dog-Miki is actually revealed to be her face, with the rest of her body locked up in the Skull King's dungeon at the Skull Castle. At the end of ''Shin Violence Jack'''s second volume, she gets her face back and becomes some sort of warrior woman with Cerberus as her steed.]]
** [[spoiler:The Yakuza Heretic leader whom Jack beheaded at the Earthquake Fortress in volume two of the original ''Violence Jack'' manga returns as a dinosaur-like demon made of concrete who challenges Jack to a rematch. Before Jack can respond, the Heretic leader is attacked by the townspeople and burned to death.]]
** ''Shin Violence Jack'' also introduces Killer Sara, [[spoiler:who is secretly the host for Sirene, and later gets a sizeable portion of the second half of the manga to show off her true powers]].
* BadassBiker: Jun Hono from ''Anime/GreatMazinger'', in the Hell's Wind arc.
* BalanceBetweenGoodAndEvil: It's revealed by Jack to Kid and Lady Jack that everything that has happened, from Kanto's destruction, Takatora Doma's rise to power, the villains of each arc, the heroes of each arc, etc. has all been a massive conflict [[spoiler:between Ryo Asuka's darkness(the villains) and his light(the heroes). The feud between his light and darkness continued to escalate and create more {{Literal Split Personalit|y}}ies of Ryo Asuka or gathered to each side people whose hearts aligned with both-locking them into an endless struggle. Only through Jack's constant interference and slaying of villains does the balance tip. Unfortunately, Honey Kisaragi failed to save Ryo and he became Satan once again to destroy the world he created. Jack becomes Devilman and manages to end the conflict for good by stopping Satan from destroying the world he created as they disappear in a ball of light.]]
* BigBad: Takatora Doma/Slum King is the EvilOverlord who rules over the destroyed, [[AfterTheEnd post-earthquake]] Kanto with an iron fist, and is the greatest enemy of the titular AntiHero.
* BigOlEyebrows: Several characters, primarily Jack.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: [[DirtyCop Officer]] [[AllMenArePerverts Kawamori]] from the Evil Town arc. He first appears to be a very ruthless, but well-meaning police officer trying to keep the peace. In reality, he is the worst kind of DirtyCop and a [[HateSink repulsive psychopath]] who was involved in raping Aira and her female friends from section C. The Anime makes him even worse, where he murders and back-stabs his own men and then joining sides with Section C in a cowardly attempt to save his own sorry ass, and he attempts to rape Aira again, before being killed by Blue.
** [[FauxAffablyEvil Tahei]] [[FatBastard Shibaki]], the mayor of section A from the Evil Town arc, first seems like a friendly guy, until it is revealed that he, like Kawamori, was Involved in raping the females in section C.
* BittersweetEnding: [[spoiler: A lot of people die and the conflict between Devilman and Satan begins anew. This time however, Devilman succeeds in fighting Satan to a stalemate and the earth itself not suffering a reset as evidenced by people wanting to preserve history despite the many tragedies they faced. Kanto itself begins to rebuild and the people have no reason to commit pointless acts of violence. The series closes with an era of peace and Jack walking off in the distance to unknown territory.]]
* BloodierAndGorier / HotterAndSexier / DarkerAndEdgier:
** Even though the manga was already pretty gory and dark while running in a shounen magazine, it got even gorier, darker, and gained more sex, nudity, and {{Fanservice}} when it began running in a magazine geared toward middle-aged men.
** The [=OVAs=] themselves are much more darker adaptations of the manga story arcs, it added many cases of rape and related sexual violence.
* BodyguardBabes: Takatora Doma is protected by his wife, Slum Queen and her army of masked women in suits. ''Shin Violence Jack'''s Skull King is protected by Skull Queen, an exceedingly-photogenic woman who wears a sharp suit in contrast to the Skull King's armour.
* BodyHorror:
** [[spoiler: Mad Saurus' violent mutation after cannibalizing Blue in the Evil Town OVA.]]
** Takadora Doma was born with an incredibly overdeveloped musculature, so much it needs to be exerted all the time, else it would ''crush his bones and internal organs''. The heavy armor he wears all the time is not for show, his life depends on it; even the mask is necessary to prevent the muscles from damaging his skull and brain, but it also causes his face to lose the skin, and it's not pretty.
* BondOneLiner: "Call me Jack; call me Violence Jack."
* BondageIsBad: Many villains (in the Harlem Bomber OVA) are S&M costume-wearing weirdos who like to tie up and sexually torture innocent young women.
* ICallItVera: Inverted with Jack, to the point where he ''named himself'' after his jackknife.
* CameBackStrong: Near the end of the story, Jack reveals [[spoiler:Satan unintentionally did this when he resurrected him back when he was Akira. Due to how strong his despair was over killing Akira, he made Jack just as strong as the despair he felt. This ends up making Devilman ''as powerful as Satan himself'', though lacking most of Satan's other unique abilities]].
* CanonImmigrant: A large chunk of the characters featured in Violence Jack originated from Go Nagai's other notable works, including Anime/MazingerZ, Manga/HarenchiGakuen, Anime/GodMazinger, Manga/{{Shutendouji}}, Anime/CuteyHoney, and many others. Only here, their backstories are largely rewritten, and some even have their [[AgeLift ages changed]].
** Aira Mu originates from Anime/GodMazinger.
** Koji Kabuto, Sayaka Yumi, Boss, Nuke, Mucha, Dr. Hell, Baron Ashura, viscount pygman/count broken ([[CompositeCharacter who are now both the same character here]]), Jun Hono and Tetsuya Tsurugi all come from Anime/MazingerZ
** Rikki and Iron Kaiser came from Manga/{{Shutendouji}}
** Shingo Susa and Gouda come from Manga/{{Susanoo}}
** Mondo Saotome, Tatsuma Mido and Tsubasa Nishikiori come from Guerilla High
** Honey Kisaragi comes from Anime/CuteyHoney, and her six friends, Hurricane, Idol, Fancy, Cutey, Flash and Misty are all based on Honey's several different disguises.
** Iyamon and Bau from the 1972 ''Devilman'' anime appear in ''Shin Violence Jack'' as members of the Skull King's army, and are rather unusual examples in that they're the sole demons in the series that aren't original or returning from the main manga series.
** Kikuno, Naojiro, Goemon, and Kichiza are all from The Abashiri Family.
* CharacterDevelopment: Jack during his streaks of violent rampage in the post-apocalyptic world. Initially he made it clear that he didn't care whom he was fighting or saving -- it was all collateral whether he felt like saving/killing one person here or there. However as the series progressed, Jack became quite focused on saving people, mostly women and children. After his new-found resolve, the body count of people who sought his help dropped considerably.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: The New Shu Army in ''Shin Violence Jack''. They are a group of Chinese and Japanese actors and extras who were filming a movie based on the ''Romance of the Three Kingdoms''. When the Kanto Hellquake struck, they went collectively insane and began to think that they were real heroes from China's Three Kingdoms era. Their three leaders seek to take Kanto, a "land stripped of history and culture," and turn it into a tyrannical state for the strong, using the ancient China motif to keep their men unified. In that respect they resemble Caesar from ''VideoGame/FalloutNewVegas''. Oh, and they are also AxCrazy killers who terrorize the populace. [[FromBadToWorse And a good proportion of them have become hosts to demons as well]].
* ClusterFBomb: The English dub of the [=OVAs=] just love using them.
-->'''Lazer:''' "Goddamit! Where the hell is Jack, the fuckin' chicken shit! Fuckin' fuckin' shit, fuckin' shit!"
-->'''Jack:''' [''Bursts out of the ground [[BoulderBludgeon carrying a rock]]'']
-->'''Mook:''' "HOLY SHIT, THE BASTARD'S HERE!"
* ContinuitySnarl: This series is a sequel to ''Manga/{{Devilman}}'', but so is ''Manga/DevilmanLady'', making it a complicated topic. Fans have been discussing it for years, noting that ''Lady'' has much more solid connections to the original than ''Jack'', but without having an official answer to which is supposed to be the true sequel. At the end, Nagai stated that ''Violence Jack'' should be treated as its own universe, which implies ''Lady'' is meant to be ''Devilman'''s true continuation. However, considering that [[spoiler:the franchise's world is on a constant loop thanks to God's continuous punishment against Satan, it is also possible to believe that both ''Jack'' and ''Lady'' are simply separate iterations of the cycle.]]
* CosmicRetcon: [[spoiler:After ''Manga/DevilmanLady'' revealed the universe is held in a time loop by God, it's implied that ''Violence Jack'' was part of it and that a Cosmic Retcon erased it to turn the series into ''Lady''.]]
* CrapsackWorld: Even worse than the world of the series to which it's a sequel.
* CreepyCrossdresser: Blue, who even has breast implants.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: So, so many.
* DeathOfAChild:
** The first arc alone has children getting their heads smashed in and getting burned alive. At one point, Jack decapitates a little girl being used as a human shield.
** Not even the [=OVAs=] are spared in this one [[spoiler:except Saburo from Hell's Wind arc]].
* DecapitationPresentation: [[spoiler:In "King of Brutes", one of Kibara's men sticks a kid's head in a pike and drinks the dripping blood from it.]]
* DecompositeCharacter: [[Anime/CuteyHoney Honey Kisaragi]], who is now Ryo Asuka's sister, is also split into seven different characters: Honey, Cutey, Idol, Flash, Hurricane, Misty, and Fancy, six of them being named after and based on six of Honey's different forms.
* DeconstructionCrossover: Several of characters from Go Nagai's other manga show up in ''Violence Jack'', usually as alternate universe versions. One such example is a [[Anime/MazingerZ blind martial artist named Jim Mazinger, and his spotter, Koji Kabuto.]]
* {{Depraved Homosexual}}s: [[DepravedBisexual And bisexuals]]... and heterosexuals... and... ah, fuck it, [[HumansAreBastards nearly everyone]].
* DistantFinale: [[spoiler: The manga's epilogue focuses on Ryou Takuma several decades after the battle against Takatora Doma.]]
* DownerEnding:
** The Harlem Bomber OVA ends with [[spoiler: the heroine's boyfriend and friend dead, leaving her to wander the wasteland alone.]]
* DubNameChange: The Harem Bomber was translated to the Harlem Bomber.
* DudeLooksLikeALady:
** Tatsuma and Shingo.
** [[spoiler:Also Blue, who is transgender.]]
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: The Harlem Bomber OVA compared to the following two. Jack looks far more monstrous and acts much more bestial, saying a single sentence in the entire movie, and is also closer to manga canon by being indifferently murderous towards everyone in his path; even his PetTheDog moment (sparing Kenichi despite the latter stabbing him in the eye) is undone [[spoiler: when he uses Kenichi and his girlfriend's Gyrocopter as a weapon, killing Kenichi in the process]]. The follow-up episodes, he looks less monstrous, is more talkative, and is generally a nicer guy -- he still brutally massacres people, but only evil ones.
* EarnYourHappyEnding: Even if the story is overtly cynical, any characters who actually survive can finally have peace prior to their hellish experience.
* EnhancedArchaicWeapon: Slum Queen wields a whip made of [[RazorFloss razor wire]], while Rose in the Harlem Bomber arc has a whip with thorns on it.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes:
** Mad Saurus in the Evil Town OVA and his moll, Blue. [[spoiler: He's devastated when he finds Jack killed Blue whilst he was badly injured and struggling to catch up, breaking down weeping as he calls her the only one he ever loved. Then he snaps, ''eats her corpse'' and promptly mutates into a monster that almost manages to kill Jack in revenge. When he dies, he has a dying ramble about how happy he is to be with Blue again in hell.]]
** Zuba-Ban is genuinely concerned for his sister Jeanne's well being, so much that he decides to let her free upon realizing that she had found love.
* EvenEvilHasStandards:
** Mad Saurus and his Gang of Section B are disgusted upon hearing how the men of Section A drugged and raped the women of Section C months after the earthquake and went back to acting civil and upstanding. Blue remarks how at least Section B don't pretend to be anything other than monstrous bastards while the men of Section A are just as evil but put on a righteous face. They also don't approve of backstabbing.
** When Slum King goes to get revenge on the Cult of Dante for turning his Rogue-Drake Regiment into sex slaves, He encounters Jack shielding Jubei and Yamagishi, he tells his men that Jack isn't his enemy and slaughter the Cult of Dante instead.
* ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin: He's called Violence Jack because he's a very ''violent'' man who carries around a ''jack''knife. Enough said.
* EyeScream:
** A particularly painful example in the first OVA, in which Kenichi throws a knife at Jack and it lodges into his eye. Jack barely even reacts, and lets Kenichi live because he knows that he's also trying to stop the Harem Bomber.
** There is also Jim "Z" Mazinger from the manga, who has to be guided by Koji after losing his sight in a karate match.
** Jack also falls prey to this after being tortured and enslaved by Kraken's men in the Kraken/[[spoiler: Naojiro Oyama]] arc. [[spoiler: Jack regenerates, anyway.]]
* FanDisservice: Several to count actually.
* {{Fanservice}}: While the series is notorious for intentionally focusing on the opposite side of this trope, there is also an equal amount of sexy scenes that pull through without violence or horror.
* FangsAreEvil:
** Violence Jack's canines, although of a subtlety that would normally deem them CuteLittleFangs (except in [[ArtShift the Harlem Bomber OVA]]), are a warning of his ruthlessly bloodthirsty nature.
** Mad Saurus has vaguely fang-like, peg-teeth, as if he needed more of a sign of his evilness. [[spoiler: After cannibalizing Blue's corpse and mutating, he sprouts full-on fangs.]]
* FateWorseThanDeath: Ryo Asuka and Miki Makimura are brought back to life to be Takatora's slaves. [[spoiler:It turns out Ryo/Satan wanted this as his punishment for killing Devilman, given that Takatora Doma is actually the reincarnation of Zennon, his second in command.]]
* {{Foreshadowing}}: The manga has plenty of examples, but the most notable one being the time Jinnai Doma, Slum King’s grandfather, said in his deathbed that Takatora was but a demon who would bring Hell on Earth. [[spoiler: If he only knew.]]
* FriendToAllChildren: In the original manga Jack was often saving children in the post-apocalyptic world, mostly unintentionally or just because he felt like it; In the series revival in 2005, it seems that children have grown on Jack's heart, he is even a self-proclaimed defender of children.
* FriendToAllLivingThings:
** In keeping with his tiger motif, Jack never harms a wild animal unless they attack him first. In ''King of Brutes'', he revives Shingo's Tiger, and when he arrives to save Aila Mu, Shingo's Tiger and Jack have the first BigDamnHeroes moment in the entire series.
** Aira Muto, who is arguably the most sympathetic character in the series, enjoys comforting children who have been abused, and she even built a village called 'The kingdom of Mu' that looks after children in the King of Brutes arc.
* GainaxEnding: The Harlem Bomber OVA ends with [[spoiler:Jack calling down a lightning bolt to heal his injuries, followed by turning into a giant golden bird and flying off, with the only surviving character following him to who knows where]]. It comes out of nowhere without any kind of explanation. [[spoiler: Although, given the canon that he's Akira Fudoh reincarnated, it's sort of explainable. But not by much.]]
** [[spoiler: It's later revealed that the golden eagle is a manifestation of Jack's that watches over and protects every arc's respective protagonist, granting them the strength to strive against evil in the process.]]
* GeniusBruiser: Apart from being an excellent hand-to-hand combatant with great mystical powers, Jack is also shown to know ancient Chinese history in ''Shin Violence Jack''.
* GeniusLoci: [[spoiler:The entire world is one for Satan. By recreating the world based on his memories, it ends up reflecting his mental state.]] The hellish Kanto is a reflection of self-hatred and the destruction seen in [[spoiler:Devilman's ending.]]
* {{Gorn}}: The entire series. A prominent example is in Evil Town when [[spoiler:Evil Redhead Bitch kills all the children]] and when [[spoiler:Mad Saurus eats the corpse of his lover, Blue, to "become one flesh"]].
* HateSink: Almost all the bad guys in this series fall under this, and very few of them have any redeeming qualities.
** Slightly averted in Slum King’s case. As shown in his tragic past, Takatora Doma was never given a chance to be anything other than a murderous monster.
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe:
** Jack splits several people in half over the course of the series, both horizontally and vertically. Usually with his knife, but not always...
** In the Evil Town OAV, he deals with Bitch by grabbing her by the legs and pulling them apart until she ''splits open''.
** The Hell's Wind gang amuse themselves by tearing a Hope Town villager in half with their motorcycles during their brief takeover, in the OVA.
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:Slum Queen.]]
* HijackedByGanon: Takatora Doma, the Slum King, is the supreme warlord of the post-apocalyptic Kanto region with no equal. It was by Satan's own will that Takatora reigned; except that when [[spoiler:Takatora's slave, Ryo Asuka, sacrificed himself to help Jack kill the warlord, Satan came back and quickly 'killed' Takatora, (in reality, simply relegating him back to his true self as Satan's second in command, Zennon) wanting to resume the eternal grudge between Violence Jack (Akira Fudou) and Ryo Asuka (Satan) in yet another epic fight. [[HoistByHisOwnPetard This backfires.]]]]
* HotBloodedSideburns: Jack, of course.
* IAmWho:
** [[spoiler: Violence Jack is Akira Fudo.]]
** In ''Shin Violence Jack, Skull King is [[spoiler:Akira Fudo]].
** Likewise, in this version, Jack is [[spoiler:Amon]]
** In Shin Violence Jack, Sara is [[spoiler:Sirene]].
** [[spoiler:Takatora Doma is Zennon.]]
* ICallItVera: {{Inverted|Trope}}.
* IncendiaryExponent: Jack's reaction to being blown up with a Stinger missile and covered in flames? Casually murder the the remaining Hell's Wind bikers.
* InvincibleHero: Jack himself, who is physically stronger than a good number of the bad guys. Though the story seems to be well aware of this, since, in a similar vein to Literature/VampireHunterD, Jack is treated as more of a DeusExMachina that the characters rely on fight stronger enemies that they themselves can't take on. And considering how vile the villains in this series are, [[ShowyInvincibleHero it's still enjoyable to see Jack hand their asses to them]].
** He does avert this trope a few times, particularly when he's up against Takatora Doma, Mad Saurus, and even Sumo wrestlers at one point.
* KickTheDog:
** Until the battle against the Heretics, you could believe that Jack is a good guy and the rumors about him destroying towns are just that -- after all, he's defending orphans and only being excessively murderous against ''bad'' people. Then he goes and beheads a little girl being used as a human shield, complete with SlasherSmile. This would be a MoralEventHorizon in any other work, except he's ''still'' not as monstrous as many of the other characters.
** In the Harlem Bomber OVA, he thanks Kenichi and girlfriend for saving his life by [[spoiler: using their gyrocopter as a weapon to kill Bomber, resulting in Kenichi's death]].
* LecherousLicking: Shingo imagines the tiger doing this to Aira while he's watching the two stare each other down at a hot spring.
** Go Nagai used several forms of symbolism to portray this during the many sexual assault scenes in the manga. This was done to prove a point on the depravity of mankind even before the Hellquake.
* LesbianJock: Rikki from the Evil Town arc. More so in the manga; there's no hints of her being gay in the OVA.
* LighterAndSofter: Despite the notes about the [=OVAs=] under DarkerAndEdgier above, both the OVA version of Evil Town and of Hell's Wind are far lighter than the manga, or even the Harlem Bomber OVA. Jack is shown in almost "good guy" terms, being willing to use his capacity for violence only on scumbags who deserve it and deliberately trying to help people who are innocent. Hell, most of the "good guys" in the second and third [=OVAs=] actually survive, even if they do get tortured and/or raped.
* LipstickLesbian: Honey Kisaragi and Aila Mu, in the manga. For the latter, it's unclear if this changes after she falls in love with Shingo.
* LiteralSplitPersonality: Jack can become three independent incarnations of himself with their own personality. These three are Jack, Lady, and Kid. [[spoiler:It's later revealed that Takatora Doma, Slum Queen, Honey Kisaragi, the Honey Angels, Mondo Saotome, Tatsuma Mido, and more are all aspects of Satan's personality made manifest in the eternal struggle of Satan lashing out at himself and his good parts trying to defeat his inner demons.]]
* LukeIAmYourFather: Used several times throughout the manga, and never has a dull moment.
** In the "Future City" arc, it is revealed that [[spoiler: the bandaged man observing Iron Muscle's fights was none other than his long-lost father, having woken up from a coma.]]
** In the "Kraken" arc, it is shown towards the end that the evil Kraken is non other than [[spoiler: an amnesiac Naojiro, Kikuno's surviving half-sibling who once saved her life.]]
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: Jack is king of this trope. In the third OAV, the Hell's Wind gang shoots him with automatic weapons for nearly a good five minutes. He turns to yell at the kid watching about getting used to the sight of blood.
* MistakenForGay: Inverted with Mondo and Midou, who are often mistaken for a ''straight'' couple due to Midou's [[DudeLooksLikeALady feminine appearance.]]
* NoEnding:
** Shin Violence Jack climaxes with the [[spoiler:Skull King starting to remember his identity as the Slum King, and gets a never-seen-before face strikingly similar to Akira's to boot, Zennon turns out to be the Skull King's castle, Miki gets her body back, gains Cerberus as a mount and apparently has psychic powers now... and that's how it ends.]]
** Although Skull King's true identity may actually be [[spoiler:Akira Fudo]], with Violence Jack implied to be [[spoiler:Amon]].
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: The female DecoyProtagonist in the Harlem Bomber arc insists she and her long-sought boyfriend have to save Jack from the OVA's BigBad, even though her boyfriend Kenichi insists it's too dangerous. She ignores him and throws Jack a rope, saving his life... [[spoiler: and Jack uses the rope to pull the gyrocopter out of the air and crush Bomber. The crash sends her and Kenichi flying, and Kenichi suffers an implicitly fatal head injury. When she regains consciousness, they're all dead/gone, and so she has nothing to do but wander hopelessly off into the wasteland again.]]
* NighInvulnerability: Jack is pretty much immune to anything you do to him. Up to and including ''tanking a Stinger missile'' in the Hell's Wind OVA.
* OurGhoulsAreCreepier: [[spoiler: In the Evil Town OVA, Mad Saurus goes insane after finding Jack decapitated his lover. So he eats her corpse and promptly mutates, visibly ripping out of his skin and having the bones of his fingers and toes extend to reshape themselves into claws. The more monstrous-looking Mad Saurus gains a ''massive'' increase in strength, speed and agility, and almost manages to kill Jack.]]
* PetTheDog:
** Jack uses his necromancy skills to revive Shingo's Tiger in ''King of Brutes''.
** Jack spares Jun from her suffering and a lifetime of hatred by transporting her with his powers to a peaceful dimension.
** In a rare case of humane mercy, Slum King himself refrains from fighting Jack after realizing the giant was shielding Yamagishi and Jubei in ''Advent of Evil ''.
* PsychoLesbian:
** Rose from the Harlem Bomber arc, although as her only sex scene was raping one of the women she intends to break in as a sex slave, she may be a DepravedBisexual.
** In the Evil Town OVA; Blue (who, as Mad Saurus's lover, counts more as DepravedBisexual) and Bitch of the Mad Saurus gang of Area B, eagerly join the men of Areas A and B in raping the women of Area C. Blue actually stabs Kawamori to death with a crowbar so she can take his place raping Aila Mu.
* PragmaticAdaptation: The arcs the [=OVAs=] cover, Harlem Bomber (Harem Bomber), Evil Town and Hell’s Wind, are actually set quite far apart in the manga; that’s why Jack’s behavior in Harlem Bomber seems completely odd compared to how much of a nicer person he is in Evil Town, in the Manga he had already gone through several experiences that made him become a better person.
* PsychoKnifeNut: Joker, in the Hell's Wind OVA, is a sadistic psychopath who enjoys torturing people to death with a Bowie knife.
* QuestForIdentity: The Skull King's quest is this.
* RagingStiffie: For some unexplored reason, Shingo gets one (and actually ejaculates himself) after nearly getting killed by a tiger.
* RapeAsBackstory:
** In the Evil Town arc, the reason Aila Mu and the other women of Area C refuse to associate themselves with Area A is because the men of Area A raped them shortly after the earthquake.
** Shingo in the "King of Brutes", due to looking like a girl all his life.
* RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil: The worst characters in the series end up being brutal rapists as the Evil Town Arc will attest.
%%* RatedMForManly: The entire series.
* TheReveal: [[spoiler:Ryo is still alive and retains his memories as Satan, the Slum King is actually Zennon, and the Jacks are Akira. When they merge, they turn into Devilman]].
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Jack gives one to the leaders of the New Shu Army in ''Shin Violence Jack''.
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: [[spoiler:Slum Queen chooses to rebel against her husband, but he kills her with her own whip.]]
** In the Manga, The surviving men of Area A, some of them participated in the rape of the women of Area C, touched by how Aila Mu gave them shelter after Area B destroyed Area A despite their heinous crimes, decide to HoldTheLine against the thugs of Area B in order to buy them time to escape.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: the villains in the [=OVAs=] when they are going to do something really nasty, they're eyes turns glowing red.
* RewardedAsATraitorDeserves: In the manga, Kawamori, shortly after he kills Tahei and makes the other Members of Area A surrender gets stomped to death by Mad Saurus. In the OVA, he is killed by Blue when he tries to rape Aila Mu again.
* SequelReset: The original manga ended with [[spoiler:Jack fighting against Satan, but with no clear conclusion on the fight's outcome]], ''Shin Violence Jack'' comes and Jack is back to killing warlords and other oppressors from Takatora Doma's reign, at least his CharacterDevelopment sticks for this one.
* ShoutOut: The [[Franchise/MarvelComics Marvel]] Pirates, filled with various X-Men look alikes.
* SlidingScaleOfIdealismVersusCynicism: Shifts ''HARD'' to the cynicism side from the get-go and stays there throughout its duration.
* SociopathicHero: Jack himself. Though he gets better as time goes on.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Harlem Bomber/Harem Bomber and Mad Saurus/Mad Saulus/Mad Zaurus
* StatuesqueStunner: And how. Rikki, Fire Venus, Diana, Aphrodite,[[spoiler: Female Jack]], the list goes on.
* StealthMentor: Jack does this for the kid Ryu.
* SuperStrength: Jack has this ability, allowing him to carve through flesh and bone with a jackknife and even rip people apart with his bare hands. It's not MadeOfPlasticine because nobody else gets mutilated like this unless Jack is the one doing the killing. Of course, given the true nature of Jack's origins, it's justified.
* TinTyrant: Takatora Doma wears heavy samurai armor with a mask. [[spoiler: It turns out the reason he wears a mask is because his face has no skin.]]
* TheTokyoFireball: An earthquake ''and'' several volcanoes erupting ''AND'' a tsunami '''and''' flash fires, '''AND''' the entire Kanto region becoming a new island. All triggered by a meteorite shower.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Honey Kisaragi and Hurricane.
* TookALevelInKindness: Jack gets a lot more human as the manga develops, and is notable as being much more heroic in the OVA versions of Evil Town and Hell's Wind than he is in Harlem Bomber -- he still brutally murders people, but only scumbags who deserve it, and he actively tries to protect the innocent.
* TragicMistake: Doma becoming the villain that he is was due to his brother Koji having sex with his teacher whom he loved. He murders the both of them in a blind rage, and when he sees this vision again, he cries TearsOfRemorse.
* TwoFaced: Mad Saurus in the Evil Town OVA has a subtle case; the skin around one eye and upon one side of his nose is either burned red or flayed raw, presumably an injury he took during the hellquake. Combined with the way it distorts that side of his upper lip into a permanent sneer, and the blind, staring eye, it serves as a RedRightHand.
* UnbuiltTrope: ''Violence Jack'' was probably the first AfterTheEnd manga published in Japan. Compared to it, manga set in a post-apocalyptic setting, such as ''Manga/FistOfTheNorthStar'', are LighterAndSofter. The manga devotes its entire first chapter to showing how it all happened -- with plentiful NightmareFuel scenes of people dying awfully, ''lovingly'' depicted by Creator/GoNagai -- including a ''very'' tense build-up to the earthquake -- providing plentiful geographical details and giving a death toll. And afterwards it shows that the resulting world is a CrapsackWorld where people suffer horrific death and abuse at the hands of the worst villains Go Nagai has put to paper, things ALWAYS go FromBadToWorse, and TheHero is a borderline VillainProtagonist who does not feel compelled to protect helpless people and only intervenes into a fight if something draws his attention or he would like to bust some heads.
* VasquezAlwaysDies: [[spoiler: In the Evil Town story, muscle girl Rikki gets torn to pieces by blade-wielding killers, while most of the more feminine women live on.]]
* VillainousValor: Mad Saurus, at least in the OVA version, who actually manages to seriously challenge Jack and survives a beating that Jack thought had killed him. He also saves his lover, Blue, from being throttled by Jack and tells her to run whilst he holds Jack off.
* WalkingShirtlessScene / NakedPeopleAreFunny: A significant amount of the second act of Chapter 1 revolves around Shingo and Aira being completely naked trying to fend off the tiger while the two are bathing in a hot spring.
* WouldHurtAChild: Pretty much nearly all the villains in Violence Jack are not above either killing or abusing children.
** Even Jack himself wasn't exempt from this initially. In one of the early chapters, a yakuza takes a young girl hostage and threatens to kill her in the hopes of preventing Jack from killing him, unfortunately, he not only kills the yakuza, but also the young girl. Thankfully Jack moved out of this territory where he actually starts rescuing children.
* YouDontLookLikeYou: With the exceptions of Jack and Blue Kid the none of the characters in the Evil Town OVA bear much of a resemblance to their manga counterparts.
