Formally named ''Saint Seiya: [[AntagonistTitle The Lost Canvas - The Legend of Hades]]''.

A {{prequel}} to the original ''Manga/SaintSeiya'' written and illustrated by Shiori Teshirogi, ''The Lost Canvas'' is set in the 18th century and tells the story of the previous Holy War between Hades and Athena.

Tenma, a young orphan growing up in Italy, and his friends Alone and Sasha, find themselves caught up in the war. Sasha is the earthly incarnation of Athena, while Alone is possessed by Hades. Tenma goes on to become the Pegasus Saint and try to save his friends from the ongoing war.

The series has been made into an OVA series, notable in that this is the only entry that Creator/ToeiAnimation has no involvement in, with production instead handled by Creator/TMSEntertainment. [[http://www.crunchyroll.com/saint-seiya-the-lost-canvas Crunchyroll.com]] is now legally featuring the series (subbed) for free with the second season being simulcasted. In 2018, the series was made available to stream worldwide via Creator/{{Netflix}}. They also commissioned an English dub for it, making it the first Saint Seiya series since the original to be dubbed into English, and the only one since the Creator/DiCEntertainment dub to be recorded outside of Texas, with VSI Los Agneles on dubbing duties.

Sadly though, the series was [[CutShort canceled]] after the second season with TMS having no plans to continue it.

[[folder: A-C]]
* AChildShallLeadThem: Sasha, Athena reincarnated, is only fourteen. Alone is just one year older.
* AlasPoorVillain: Bennu Kagaho and Harpy Valentine.
** The Lost Canvas version of Aiacos got the lucky break of getting this without dying. Last we saw of him, Kagaho let him live his remaining days in peace.
** Also Behemoth Violate and Basilisk Sylphid.
* AMagicContractComesWithAKiss: Pandora and Alone.
* AbsurdlySharpBlade: Capricorn El Cid's signature move Excalibur, Alone/Hades's sword.
* AbusiveParents: [[spoiler:Pegasus Tenma's father, Mephistopheles Youma. He intends to use his son as a pawn, and plans to harvest his soul as soon as it's mature enough to be used as a weapon against Olympus.]]
* ActionGirl: Crane Yuzuriha and Behemoth Violate fit this trope very nicely. [[spoiler: Recently, Pandora and Athena as well.]]
* ActionMom: [[spoiler: Owl Partita; Tenma's mother and a Specter.]]
* AdaptationDyeJob: Thanatos's hair went from silver in the manga to black in the anime, Celintha's hair went from pale brown to light blue.
* AdaptationExpansion: Teshirogi herself suggests and creates new scenes for the anime version, usually things she had no time to explore in manga version or additional backstory.
* AdvancingBossOfDoom: Griffin Minos making his way towards the Sanctuary.
* AffablyEvil: Hypnos, despite being a ManipulativeBastard, is perfectly smooth and polite.
* AllThereInTheManual: Some details about Athena's past life, Hades's past vessel, Cheshire's battle moves and official division within the Specter army... all revealed via DVD/Blu-Ray booklet.
* AlternateContinuity: ''Lost Canvas'' is generally considered to be non-canon due to many irreconcilable contradictions with ''[[Manga/SaintSeiyaNextDimension Next Dimension]]'' but it has some canon plot references/hints about the original manga.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: Cait Sith Cheshire, [[spoiler:Gemini]] Defteros.
* AnArmAndALeg: [[spoiler: Thanatos rips off Manigoldo's right leg at the end of their fight]], [[spoiler: El Cid gets an arm cut off when Icelus [[HoistByHisOwnPetard teleports his own attack against him]]]], [[spoiler: Aspros's arm implodes when he throws Youma inside of the divine dimension ([[NauseaFuel and Youma's whole body implodes as well]])]].
* AngstySurvivingTwin: Played with Aspros and Defteros, to milk all the angst regarding this trope. [[spoiler: Initially, it is Aspros who died-heck, he even died in Defteros' hands, who used to look upon him. Aspros, being Aspros, refused to accept his loss and swore he will return to take over the Sanctuary even after his death. The face Defteros made when he hit Aspros' heart and the fact he carried his older twin's dead body with BridalCarry tells us how affected by Aspros' death Defteros is. Not only he is suffering from the fact he killed his own twin brother, he also knows his twin will be BackFromTheDead and has to train himself to fight Aspros once again. Then Aspros DOES come BackFromTheDead, and this time, Defteros pulled a ThanatosGambit to purify Aspros from his own Genromaoken and from Mephistopheles Youma's influence. The face Aspros makes indicates that it worked, making him wonder: since when did he start looking down on Defteros and stop loving him back? Since when did things go wrong? And now, it dawns upon him. He realizes he just killed his own twin, and that it's his turn to play this trope.]] [[TearJerker Pass me the tissue, please.]]
* AnIcePerson: Aquarius Degel, Krest.
* AntagonistTitle: Although not a character name, even if the Lost Canvas is almost a sentient entity.
* AnyoneCanDie: Especially true for those who never read [[Manga/SaintSeiya the original]].
* ArtInitiatesLife: A cruel inversion with Alone: Everything he paints ''dies''. [[TrueArtIsAngsty His eventual goal is to paint the entire Universe and destroy it]]. [[spoiler: He's nearly managed it, too!]]
* AscendedExtra:
** Unicorn Jabu in the original only appeared in the first/last few chapters, CantCatchUp to Seiya and always remained an extra. But here, Unicorn Yato is one of the main characters, forms a trio with Tenma and Yuzuriha. It also helps that he's much more likable than [[SmugSnake Jabu]] and got some BigDamnHeroes moments on his own.
** In ''Manga/SaintSeiya'', the fight with Hades came the last, as well as the fact that Shun was Hades' vessel was only revealed much later in the story. Here, the fact that Alone is Hades' vessel was revealed right at the first chapter, and the story focus on Athena's Saints v.s Hades' Specters, unlike the original where they fought other enemies first.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Leo Regulus. Nothing escapes him.
-->"I've taken a good look at you. My eyes can see everything about my opponents: their strengths, their flaws, their habits, even the source of their power."
* BackFromTheDead:
** By default, every Specter. Comes with the territory of being warriors for the God of the Underworld.
** Also played for tragedy, Hades has the gall to revive dead Saints to send them back as fodder troops.
** [[spoiler: Partita, Tenma's mother, as an Specter]].
* {{Backstory}}: Libra Dohko and Aries Shion, this was your life!
* BadHabits: Hypnos usually disguises himself as a priest. He's posing as one when introduced.
* BadassBoast: Cancer Manigoldo claims he's "the kind of man even Gods need to watch out for". [[spoiler:Considering he was able to destroy the ''entire'' body of a god, admittedly at the cost of his life, when the best Seiya and company could do to that god was prick his finger without their God Cloths, he's quite right.]]
* BadassBookworm: Aquarius Degel, Balron René.
* BadassCape: All the Gold Saints with a badass wind to blow it in some cool way.
* BadassLongRobe: Sage, Hypnos, Thanatos, Alone.
* BarrageOfBats: Specter Bat Wimber can control bats. His main attack is "Nightmare Sonar": he summons a large swarm of bats that emit deafening shrieks at the opponent.
* BarrierMaiden: Before the rosary that seals the Specters' souls is created, Athena herself sustains a barrier that prevents them to be resurrected.
* BattleAura: Cosmo energy is depicted as something similar to fire.
* BattleInTheCenterOfTheMind: [[spoiler:Virgo Asmita confronts a [[BrainwashedAndCrazy brainwashed]] Defteros inside of his mind to release him from his brother's control.]]
* BattleInTheRain: Dohko and Kagaho's last face-off.
** Dohko's first battle in the series also happens under rainfall.
* BerserkButton: [[spoiler:The mere presence of Wyvern Rhadamanthys, his father's murderer, is this to Leo Regulus.]]
* BigBad: Hades. [[spoiler:Though he doesn't really wake up until endgame, making Alone the BigBad and him TheManBehindTheMan.]]
* BigBadWannabe: [[spoiler:Mephistopheles Youma]] talked tough and seemed unstoppable. He had a brilliant [[AssPull Evil Plan]], equal parts RageAgainstTheHeavens and ForTheEvulz, until someone with the skills and the capacity to stand up to him finally came along, that is. After that, it was just a slow and steady VillainousBreakdown for him.
* BigGood: Athena.
* BittersweetEnding: [[spoiler:Tenma, Sasha and Alone perish after their last attack against Hades, only a handful survive ([[ForegoneConclusion Shion and Dohko]], Teneo, Yato, Yuzuriha, Atla, Cheshire and Pandora), Athena's army is practically destroyed, the Sanctuary is desolated and empty -- but the sky shines bright with the hope of the next generation.]]
* {{Bizarrchitecture}}: Lost Canvas. Fair enough, since it's a gigantic materialized painting.
* BlessedWithSuck: Alone is said to be the man with purest soul; that's precisely what makes him the perfect body for Hades' reincarnation. Ouch.
** Also, Kardia and his overheating heart, Albafica and his poisonous blood and in a rare villian example: Basilisk Sylphid [[spoiler: who also deals with something similar to Albafica]].
* BlindSeer: Asmita
* BloodKnight: Cancer Manigoldo, Scorpio Kardia; Gemini Defteros and Gemini Aspros to a lesser degree.
* BloodMagic: Divine blood, used for many kinds of magic. It can grant you a ridiculously large lifespan (albeit with a DePower) can turn you into a PhysicalGod when injected into your veins (as long as you don't die), it can instantly upgrade your PowerArmor...
** This forgets the fact that Tenma got his first Cloth upgrade courtesy of Asmita pouring his Gold Saint blood on it. This would allow the Cloth to take a golden shine once Tenma would accumulate enough HeroicResolve.
** And also the talismans written with Athena's blood from the previous war, which are still potent enough in the Pope's hands to hold Hades in place, and counter Thanatos' "path of the gods", an hyper-dimension that will rip to shreds anything that is not of divine essence.
* BloodyMurder: Albafica.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: [[spoiler:Gemini Defteros was a victim of this at one point. Virgo Asmita helped him break through it at the cost of killing his twin brother Gemini Aspros, who had conspired to kill the Pope.]]
* BreakoutCharacter: The Gold Saints were so popular they got their own Gaiden series, where each volume is dedicated to one of them.
* BroadStrokes: There are only a few similarities between this and Kurumada's own story taking place during the same time. However, a few do spring up, such as both versions of the Garuda Specter having the name Suikyo.
* BrokeYourArmPunchingOutCthulhu: Because few victories come without cost.
* BrokenPedestal: [[spoiler: Aspros. Poor Defteros used to admire him so much.]]
* BroughtDownToNormal: [[spoiler:Yuzuriha, Yato, and arguably, Dohko]]
* BugsHeraldEvil: The Specter Nasu Veronica is heavily associated with flies, controlling a horde of them to attack his enemies. He claims that the flies that descend upon a corpse do it in order to devour its soul before it can pass on to the afterlife.
* CainAndAbel: Sasha and Alone are the main example.
** [[spoiler:Gemini Aspros and Gemini Defteros. Defteros, being the youngest, executed Aspros after the latter attempted a coup d'etat against the Pope and the Sanctuary.]]
** Similarly, [[spoiler:Youma aka Kairos was similarly betrayed by his elder brother Kronos - yes, ''the Titan Kronos'' - and sealed away. Kairos wants revenge on him and the gods.]]
** [[spoiler:Crane Yuzuriha and her little brother Tokusa, revealed to be the Hanuman Specter.]]
* CallingYourAttacks: Almost everyone does it.
* CameBackWrong: Wyvern Radamanthys.
* TheCameo: The five Bronze Saints in the [[Manga/SaintSeiya classic series]] appeared briefly in the anime opening sequence. They also appear in the last chapter [[http://2.p.mpcdn.net/20881/295894/19.jpg as an image Dohko has when he thinks about the next generation.]]
* TheCavalry: [[spoiler: When Shion and Dohko is about to be overpowered by Hades, the deceased Gold Saints return as spirits to help maintain the sunlight]].
* CharactersDroppingLikeFlies: The series is ''really'' known for having minimal plot armor. [[spoiler: As of chapter 212, Shion and Dohko are out of commission, only Sasha and Tenma remain capable of making a stand, barely.]] It's not looking good.
* CoDragons: Hypnos, Thanatos and Pandora.
* CombatSadomasochist: Scorpio Kardia because he knows he's LivingOnBorrowedTime anyway.
* CombatTentacles: Alraune Queen.
* CombinationAttack: [[spoiler: Sasha, Tenma and Alone! against Hades]].
* ContinuityNod: Instead of using the hair colors in Kurumada's manga, Teshirogi went with the AdaptationDyeJob the anime made, giving the Gold Saints the anime's hair colors. This conveniently helps the fans in making {{Crossover}} fanarts, as they can draw the Classic Gold Saints in their manga's hair colors and the Lost Canvas Gold Saints in their anime's hair colors.
* [[ConvenientlyanOrphan Conveniently Orphans]]: Almost everyone, justified since it's the 18th century Europe.
* CouldntFindAPen: The "True Red" found by Alone/Hades.
* CreepyCathedral: Forest Cathedral, the BigBad's headquarters on Earth.
* CreepyCentipedes: Yato faces a monstrous (and talking) one in the Forest of the Dead.
* CreepyCrossdresser: Nasu Veronica, Phantasos.
* CreepyTwins: Hypnos/Thanatos. One can materialize '''''anything''''' he imagines to toy with his victims; the other can murder people from ''another dimension'' by simply '''wishing''' it. [[Manga/BlackLagoon Hansel and Gretel]] seem harmless compared to them...
%%
%% All the 'Crowning' items go in the other namespaces (Awesome/Funny/Heartwarming, etc.). Not here.
%%
* CurbStompBattle: [[spoiler: Gemini Aspros' defeat takes about half a chapter at the hands of Mephistopheles Youma.]]
** ''Subverted''. Recent chapters [[spoiler: revealed Aspros survived their battle and came back for a rematch. A fight that was in Aspros's favor the entire way through as he systematically overcame everything Youma sent his way, ending with [[AndIMustScream sealing Youma's soul inside Asmita's rosary.]]]]
* CutShort: The OVA series was canceled after only two seasons and the "Twin Gods" arc.
* CynicismCatalyst: [[spoiler: Sui's death is this for his brother Bennu Kagaho]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder: D-F]]
* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: [[spoiler: Athena Exclamation, [[AllYourPowersCombined Zodiac Clamation]].]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Tenma, Manigoldo, Regulus, Yuzuriha, even [[TheDragon Pandora]].
* DarkIsEvil: Hades and his Specters.
* TheDarkSide: Alone. [[spoiler: He regains control over his body, still has Hades powers and decides to go ahead with the Lost Canvas plan.]]
* DeadlyUpgrade: Scorpio Kardia's most powerful version of his signature attack, Katakaio Antares, falls in this category. [[spoiler: Luckily, he doesn't mind as he has a degenerative heart disease and just wants a really good fight before dying]].
** Leo Regulus' Zodiac Clamation.
* DeathByFlashback: Common with most of the Gold Saints. Flashback, does something awesome, dies, rinse and repeat.
* DeathSeeker: [[spoiler:Alone]].
* {{Determinator}}: Tenma is reaching Seiya's level during his fight against [[spoiler: his own mother, Owl Partita]].
* DevilsPitchfork [[BigBad Hades]]' servant Pandora wields a trident adorned with a snake motif.
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: Several instances, like the fight between Manigoldo and Thanatos.
* DidYouJustScamCthulhu: Pope Sage and Thanatos.
* DiedStandingUp: Wyvern Radamanthys. [[spoiler: Then horribly subverted when he's show to still be alive in spite of having a huge gaping hole on his chest and being stripped of his godly powers.]]
* DisabilitySuperPower: Averted with El Cid, he was still able to use Excalibur even after getting his forearm cut off [[spoiler: when one of his own attacks got reflected back to him.]]
* DisneyDeath: [[spoiler: Wyvern Rhadamanthys is a master of this.]]
* DistressedDude: Amazingly, Athena may need defending, but she never really gets kidnapped. ''Tenma'' is taken to one of Alone's fortresses when in a near-death state and trapped in the underworld. He's chained up and told that Alone [[WeCanRuleTogether wants Tenma by his side and wants him to become a high-ranking member of his army.]]
* DontLookBack: The prime rule for those who enter the sea of clouds in the Lost Canvas. [[TakenForGranite Some just can't resist...]]
* DressingAsTheEnemy: [[spoiler:After his FaceHeelTurn, Aspros puts back his evil robe - to avoid suspicions - and goes to find Alone, pretending to be a mere report when he truly intends to attack and kill him.]]
* DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler: Gemini Aspros ends up committing suicide after his failed coup d'état, rather than to atone for what he had done.]]
** [[spoiler:Kagaho's little brother Sui]], as he thought he was a burden for his older brother.
* DwindlingParty: On both Athena and Hades side.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: A bit more like Prequel Installment Weirdness. In here, Tenma and Dohko are portrayed to be [[BashBrothers very close]], and [[BigBrotherMentor Dohko]] even refers to Tenma as his little brother. Which is why it can get very strange when you look back at the original series, where Dohko is a lot closer to his student Shiryu and doesn't seem to think of Seiya as anything other than the Pegasus Saint. But you can probably interpret it as Dohko got over Tenma's death, and only sees the person called Tenma as his brother, so he regards Seiya as a totally different person.
* EldritchLocation: Lost Canvas.
* EnemyMine: Although one side isn't aware of it. [[spoiler: Alone is in fact using Hades's powers for his own gain. Pandora opposes this because it is only through ''Hades'' winning the holy war that her life has any meaning]]
** [[spoiler: Lady Pandora and Pegasus Tenma vs Owl Partita.]]
* EverybodyHatesHades: Played straight, and how.
* EvilCounterpart: Pandora, being Hades's representative and commanding the Specters, is a sort of EvilCounterpart to Athena's Pope. She can also be seen as an EvilCounterpart to Athena herself.
* EvilDetectingDog: Pandora, who scares off all of the animals surrounding Alone off the moment she shows up.
* EvilPlan: [[spoiler: Mephistopheles Youma.]]
* TheEvilPrince: Hades's previous SoulJar was said to be a young prince by Teshirogi.
* EvilTwin: Gemini Aspros.
* {{Expy}}: Most of the Saints look just like their future incarnations from the original Manga, down to their signature moves and even their roles. However, personality-wise, it's a different story.
** [[ActionSurvivor Dohko]] is the only one without an {{Expy}}, for him being the Libra Saint in two generations straight.
* EyeScream: Sagittarius Sisyphus and Taurus Rasgado.
* FaceHeelTurn: Alone, in a major way kicked off by a gigantic KickTheDog moment.
* FacelessGoons: The Skeleton soldiers.
* FanDisservice: Behemoth Violate, who is actually a rather attractive [[{{Tsundere}} girl]], until you look at the rest of her body, which is covered in hundred of scars.
* FightingFromTheInside: Subverted with Alone, when [[spoiler: he that has regained control over his body, has Hades powers, and still decides to go forward with the plan to destroy the Earth with the Lost Canvas.]]
* FloatingContinent: Lost Canvas.
* ForTheLulz: [[spoiler: Subverted in that it's not Alone's motivation, but Youma's.]]
* ForegoneConclusion: It's known from the original Manga that [[spoiler: only Aries Shion and Libra Dohko would be the only surviving Gold Saints, at the end of the Holy War.]]
** Ended up somewhat subverted as [[spoiler: some Bronze Saints and Silver Saint Yuzuriha saved themselves. And not even all the Specters died. However, Shion and Dohko aren't aware of it...]]
* FreudianExcuse: Pandora. [[spoiler: Youma/Kairos.]]
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Alone, taking to extremes in the OVA adaptation, when rabbits, squirrels, foxes, deer and even a ''bear'' all come out to stand by him as he's painting.
** Leo Ilias was also this.
* FusionDance [[spoiler: After Gemini Deuteros redeems his big brother Gemini Asperos at the cost of his own life, Asperos claims his life is not his anymore but his brother's and thus able to wear the Gemini Cloth again and face Hades in spite of previously being a Specter.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder: G-I]]
* GenderBender: Phantasos.
* GeniusBruiser: Leo Regulus
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: Yato to Tenma.
* TheGreatestStoryNeverTold: Almost! [[spoiler: If Sasha had arrived some minutes later, no one would ever know of Aspros's HeelFaceTurn and that he sacrificed his own life in order to defeat Youma/Kairos and seal him for good. She's the only one to know, because she arrived on the spot little time before his death.]]
* GrimUpNorth: Bluegard.
* HamToHamCombat: [[spoiler:Mephistopheles Youma vs Gemini Aspros]].
* HandicappedBadass: Many. [[spoiler:[[BlindSeer Virgo Asmita]], [[AnArmAndALeg Capricorn El Cid]], [[EyeScream Sagittarius Sisyphus]], and [[LivingOnBorrowedTime Scorpio Kardia]].]]
** [[spoiler:Aquarius Degel might also count, since his sight was also greatly damaged that he couldn't see anything farther than a few inches away clearly.]]
* HandshakeOfDoom: A skilled painter, it was Alone's dream to see a painting said to be so beautiful it would make the vilest sinner weep with repentance. Upon being led to the church by Pandora and allowed to view it, he realizes it looks exactly like him albeit mercilessly passing judgment on terrified people. He breaks down until the painting becomes a beautiful angel that reaches out towards him. Convinced that death is salvation, he grasps the Angel's hand and accepts his role as Hades.
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:Gemini Aspros, after his fight with Defteros.]]
* HellishPupils: Leo Regulus. One of the good alignment examples.
* HeroesPreferSwords: Dohko wields the Libra Sword to fight Minotaur Gordon and his axe arm.
* HeroicRROD: [[spoiler:Leo Regulus.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: Lots. The entire time. It's quicker to list the Saints that HAVEN'T died this way than the Saints who have (who are [[spoiler: Albafica, Asmita, El Cid, Sisyphus, Manigoldo, Junkers, Degel, Defteros, Ilias...]])
** [[spoiler:Owl Partita, personal messenger to Athena, reborn as a human to care for Pegasus' soul as his mother -- and switched sides, becoming the guardian of the temple of Uranus. Her fight against Tenma is so he can get enough HeroicResolve to overcome any obstacle, including killing his own mother, in order to bring down Hades.]]
* HiddenAgendaVillain: Bennu Kagaho. He's with [[spoiler: Alone's. Not Hades', just Alone's.]]
** Mephistopheles Youma.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: [[spoiler: Gemini Aspros. Arguably, Leo Regulus as well.]]
* HomoeroticSubtext: Teshirogi seems to take this to consideration a bit too much. There would be no yaoi fangirl who can't take any hint from how Tenma and previous Hades' vessel Alone interact; it's not exaggerating to say Alone, especially after his HeelFaceTurn, is [[FoeRomanceSubtext obsessed of Pegasus Tenma]].
* HopeSproutsEternal: [[spoiler:If you're not too cynical about the ending, specially considering the ForegoneConclusion that this war will happen again in the future.]]
* HotBlooded: Tenma, just like his successor, Seiya. And still TheHero.
* HotterAndSexier: In comparison with the original ''Manga/SaintSeiya'' manga,''The Lost Canvas'' features more instances of casual {{Fanservice}} moments and female characters (Like Yuzuriha) wearing rather revealing armors.
* HumanPopsicle: [[spoiler:Aquarius Degel and Seraphina.]]
* [[IAmNotLeftHanded I Am Not Right-Handed]]: Scorpio Kardia pulls this on his fight against Rhadamanthys. Literally.
* IAmYourOpponent: Griffin Minos to Pisces Albafica, then later [[BigDamnHero Pisces Albafica to Griffin Minos]]; Taurus Aldebaran to Bennu Kagaho; Scorpio Kardia to Wyvern Rhadamanthys; Sagittarius Sisyphus to Garuda Aiacos; Libra Dohko to Bennu Kagaho, at the temple of terra; and finally Gemini Aspros to Mephistopheles Youma.
* IKnowYouAreInThereSomewhereFight: [[spoiler: Athena to Pandora. Sorta.]]
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Lots of corpses lie beneath the stone bridge in Jamir, impaled by giant rock SpikesOfDoom, and the Specters who fight Virgo Asmita there suffer the same fate. Just like the trope image.
** [[spoiler:Regulus]] impales [[spoiler:Rhadamanthys]] with a fist coated in ShockAndAwe and rips off his heart.
** [[spoiler:Tenma]] ultimately defeats [[spoiler:Alone]] with a PowerFist that pierces through his body.
* ImplacableMan: [[spoiler: Rhadamanthys. Survived getting his heart pierced by Kardia; getting it ripped out by Regulus; and survived long enough, after being cut in half by Alone, to unseal Athena's power, and still save Pandora as his last act as an Specter.]]
* IncurableCoughOfDeath: [[spoiler:Leo Ilias]].
* IneffectualLoner: So many, but specially, Bennu Kagaho.
* InsaneTrollLogic: Alone's justifications. Living means suffering :: Living is bad :: If you're not alive, you won't suffer :: Death is salvation from suffering.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: J-L]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Cancer Manigoldo. [[spoiler: In his duel against Thanatos, pretty much every time he claws back from death to further disgrace the god.]]
** Played with Albafica in his backstory.
** Virgo Asmita absolutely qualifies.
* KarmaHoudini: [[spoiler:Pandora]].
* KickTheDog: Pandora literally kicks (or rather psychically lashes out) at the puppy Alone had adopted in her first appearance.
** [[spoiler: She also not only treats Harpy Valentine as one, but even calls Radamantys one as well.]] [[spoiler: Then Radamanthys does the same to his loyal subordinate, Valentine, by piercing his chest with his fist.]]
* KillItWithFire: Bennu Kagaho's main form of attack.
* KilledOffForReal
* KnightInSourArmor: Arguably, Alone. [[spoiler: Not Hades, Alone.]]
* LightIsNotGood: The Lost Canvas itself. It basically depicts a whole lot of angels, which [[spoiler:eventually gain a life of their own to block Tenma's attacks in his final confrontation with Alone.]]
* LightningBruiser: Taurus Rasgado, the fastest Saint.
* LivingOnBorrowedTime: [[spoiler:Leo Ilias, Scorpio Kardia, Gemini Aspros after his HeelFaceTurn]].
* LivingWeapon : [[spoiler: Mephistopheles Youma claims Pegasus Tenma is this and that he plans to harvest his soul in order to take down the Olympus Gods]].
* LotusEaterMachine: [[spoiler: Morpheus' realm in which Tenma was trapped and shown happy visions of his childhood with Sasha and Alone.]]
* LovableCoward: Cait Sith Cheshire.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: Alone.
* LukeIAmYourFather: Mephistopheles Youma to [[spoiler:Pegasus Tenma]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder: M-O]]
* MagicCountdown: Alone's Star Clock, keeping track of how much time is left before he finishes the Lost Canvas. [[spoiler: And that is because the Star Clock's real function is keep track of how much time Alone has before Hades completely awakes and takes over his body, so he ''must'' finish the Lost Canvas before that.]]
* ManOfWealthAndTaste: Mephistopheles Youma, rather than wear a surplice, he wears a tuxedo, top hat included.
* ManipulativeBastard: Hypnos, Youma.
* MarionetteMotion: This is Griffin Minos's power, "[[PeoplePuppets Cosmic Marionation]]".
* MeaningfulName: Alone
** And, technically, Regulus and Aldebaran. They're stars in the Leo and Taurus constellations. Kardia counts as well.
*** As do Sasha, Tenma, Asperos, Defteros, Manigoldo, Asmita, Sisyphus, El Cid, Albafica... in fact, almost all relevant characters have meaningful names, including, obviously, the ones directly based on mythological figures. This is a trend in both the original ''Manga/SaintSeiya'' series and its spin-offs.
* MeditationPowerup: Virgo Asmita.
* MercyKill: [[spoiler:Alraune Queen's reason to [[OffWithHisHead behead]] his partner Minotaur Gordon after the latter's defeat.]]
* MergerOfSouls: The Oneroi, four dream gods, have a OneWingedAngel form that fuses four of their souls into a single body. While each souls is still separate, they work in tandem to keep the body from being destroyed by harm and grant it NighInvulnerability. The catch? [[spoiler:Attacking all four souls ''simultaneously'' with precision strikes can kill them.]]
* MindRape: Often, from such varied sources as Alone, Virgo Asmita (a master in the art of) and Nasu Veronica.
* MomentKiller: [[CoolOldGuy Hakurei]] has just [[spoiler:defeated and [[SealedEvilInACan sealed]] [[ManipulativeBastard Hypnos]], an evil god, and prepares himself to destroy the barrier that protects the Forest Cathedral... but Alone appears out of thin air and kills him]].
* MonstrosityEqualsWeakness: On the Specter side. Usually, the big and menacing ones are quite weak, while the [[BishounenLine smaller and more handsome]] ones are the real threat.
* MotiveRant: Youma gets one when he reveals his true nature to [[spoiler: Aspros]]... which [[KirkSummation is then swiftly deflated when it's pointed out how pathetic he really is.]]
* MsFanservice: Yuzuriha, Pandora, Violate, Partita... take your pick.
* MythologyGag: No pun intended. The whole Lost Canvas is victim of it with characters who are the exact physical clones of their 200 years later counterparts (albeit drawn in a different art style and with personality differences). When Albafica's covered with Royal Demon Roses the path to the Sanctuary is reminiscent to what Aphrodite did behind his temple to prevent any Bronze Saint from reaching the Pope's place.
* NobleDemon: Bennu Kagaho and Harpy Valentine, [[spoiler: Wyvern Radamanthys]].
* ObfuscatingDisability: Virgo Asmita's blindness.
* OffWithHisHead: Alraune Queen's preferred method of killing.
* OminousLatinChanting: Veronica singing Psalm 23.
* OminousPipeOrgan: Veronica plays one while manipulating the corpses of children.
* OneHitKill: A hell lot of the signature moves are designed to be this.
* OneWingedAngel: After being humiliated by [[spoiler: Gemini Aspros]], Mephistopheles Youma revealed his true nature as [[spoiler: the PhysicalGod Kairos.]]
* OnlyMostlyDead: It happens to Tenma early on, thanks to a highly unlikely bulletproof vest. [[spoiler: Wyvern Radamanthys, Libra Dohko and Gemini Aspros as well.]]
** Asmita does come back as a ghost at one point :)
** [[spoiler: And Radamantys, which everyone thought had died at the hands of Scorpio Kardia]]
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: Acheron Charon simply does the job he's paid to. And he ''really'' does the job, even if it's for enemies.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou - The rivalry between Bennu Kagaho and Libra Dohko seems to be heading to this conclusion.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Youma is always in a good mood and making fun of everybody else... when he isn't cheery, run away '''really''' fast.
* OrcusOnHisThrone: Alone, although he knows he could thwart he heroes' advance through the Lost Canvas if he wished. He simply wants them to come all the way and suffer as much as possible before facing him.
* OutOfFocus: Tenma, Alone or Yato and many others in TLC did not appear in Gaiden at all. [[JustifiedTrope Justified though,]] as Tenma was only found by Dohko much later, while Gaiden is the prequel about the Gold Saints.

[[folder: P-R]]
* PaintItBlack: After his FaceHeelTurn Alone's hair turns black. This happened to [[EvilTwin Gemini Asperos]], too.
* PervertDad: [[spoiler: Mephistopheles Yoma. He stops Pandora by grabbing her breasts from behind. [[FlatWhat What.]]]]
* PetalPower: Albafica.
* PhysicalGod: [[spoiler:Wyvern Rhadamanthys]] after being blessed with Hades's blood.
* PlayingWithFire: Manigoldo, Kagaho.
* PleaseWakeUp: Yato to Tenma after the Holy War's first battle in Italy.
* PoisonousPerson: Albafica, Sylphid.
* ThePollyanna: Alone is a male example, and a perfect example of what happens when a Pollyanna is corrupted (that is to say, nothing good).
** And then in some fucked up inversion of HeroicResolve [[spoiler: Alone crushed Hades's spirit and is just using his power to kill everyone anyways.]]
* PowerCopying: Leo Regulus's signature ability. [[spoiler: Shion as well, who can learn people's powers from their armour. In the fight against Lune, who has information on all of the Aries techniques, Shion uses one of the Cancer abilities. Also happens in Shion's gaiden.]]
* PowerMakesYourHairGrow: Happens to Sasha [[spoiler:when she regains her divine powers, previously sealed by Alone.]]
* ThePowerOfBlood: Athena, Albafica.
* TheProblemWithFightingDeath: Hades may have lost all the previous Holy Wars, but he's taken revenge on all of Athena's saints by trapping their souls in the frozen ninth layer.
* PunchPunchPunchUhOh: Deep Niobe to ''[[DudeLooksLikeALady Pisces Albafica]]'' and Bennu Kagaho to Taurus Aldebaran. Interesting since this trope is usually reserved for the heroes instead of the villains.
* PureIsNotGood: [[spoiler: DAMMIT ALONE!]]
* PyrrhicVictory: By the series final, you can count the number of survivers on two hands.
* RaceAgainstTheClock: Athena's Saints must go through the Lost Canvas and defeat Alone before the end of the MagicCountdown (see entry above).
* RainOfArrows: One of Sagittarius Sisyphus's techniques consists on a rain of light arrows.
* RapidFireFisticuffs: Pegasus Tenma, Leo Regulus.
* RasputinianDeath: [[spoiler: Rhadamanthys.]]
* RetCon: [[spoiler: Mephistopholes' goal is to do this to the events of the main series.]]
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: [[spoiler: Deuteros sacrifices his life to redeem his twin brother's Aspros who had become a Specter. Aspros himself with his fight against Youma.]]
* TheReveal: [[spoiler: Youma is Tenma's father and the one who stole Hades's soul from Mrs. Heinstein's womb then ran away with it to Italy, placing it inside Alone, the world's purest child - whom was never really possessed by Hades. The god was initially withheld by Sasha/Athena's flower leash and then began a very slow process of awakening as the leash's power wore off; meanwhile, good old '''Alone''' created the ominous Lost Canvas plan and intended to execute it before Hades could fully awaken and take over his body.]]
* RocksFallEveryoneDies: [[spoiler: What happened when Hades finally overwhelmed Alone and finally revived in full, killing nearly every Saint and severely injuring Tenma, Alone, and Athena in one blast of power save for the injured and distant Dohko and Shion. Yuzuriha, Atla, Yato and Teneo also survive, but this is not revealed till the last chapter.]]

[[folder: S-U]]
* [[SacrificialLamb Sacrificial Lambs]]: Cerberus, Auriga and Sagitta.
* SacrificialLion: [[spoiler: Albafica's death. It was the turning point of the series]].
* ScarfOfAsskicking: Yuzuriha's scarf.
* ScaryShinyGlasses: Hypnos. [[SarcasmMode Think he's a villain]]?
* SceneryGorn: The Underworld, with a waterfall of blood and all.
* SceneryPorn: Loads, but Atlantis takes the cake.
* SealedEvilInACan: Poseidon. [[spoiler: Thanatos and Hypnos end up like this.]]
* ShockAndAwe: Pandora's signature attack.
* ShowSomeLeg: Crane Yuzuriha, Lady Pandora, [[spoiler: Owl Partita]].
* SiblingYinYang: Aspros and Defteros.
* SinkOrSwimMentor: Defteros to Tenma.
* SomethingAboutARose: Pisces Albafica
* SortingAlgorithmOfEvil: Averted. The difficulty of the enemies varies ranging from simply strong Specters like Kagaho, the three Judges, Thanatos and Hypnos. In fact, a good deal of energy is put forth into defeating Thanatos and Hypnos, Hades's [[TheDragon Dragons]] before they even finish off the Judges!
* SoulJar: [[spoiler: Lady Seraphina for Poseidon, and Alone for Hades.]]
* SpannerInTheWorks: Mephistopheles Youma didn't take into account [[spoiler: that Aspros's own reality-warping powers would trump his own. Or that Defteros's spirit would intercept a would-be fatal attack. Or that due to his nature as a Specter he could get sealed inside Asmita's rosary.]]
* SparedByTheAdaptation: Although the Anime tends to follow the original storyline closely, only expanding some characters background, it notably spared [[spoiler: Agasha's father, who is shown alive, but crippled after his apparent death at the hands of Minos (though we can't say for sure if he really died in the manga)]] and [[spoiler: the Saints and footsoldiers (including Salo) killed during the invasion to Hades first castle]].
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Is it Hasgard or Rasgado, anyway? Alone or Aroon? Aron? [[AerithAndBob Bob?]]
* SpikesOfDoom: All over the place in Jamir.
* StartOfDarkness: Gemini Aspros and Defteros when [[spoiler: Mephistopheles Youma was the one that stirred up the rivalry between them and tricked Aspros into fearing and hating Defteros when they were younger.]]
* TheStoic: Hades, fully awakened.
* StoicSpectacles: Aquarius Degel, whenever he's reading.
* StupidGood: Taurus Rasgado. [[spoiler: He could have easily defeated Bennu Kagaho. However, he went easy on him and took grievous injuries that cost him one of his eyes and left his body all scarred up, without killing Kagaho. This allowed for two things: Taurus dying shortly after against two weaker specters because of all the damage he had taken previously, and secondly, Bennu Kagaho went to become a new Judge of the Underworld. Kagaho then proceeded to infiltrate Sanctuary and not only almost stole Athena's Cloth but almost killed Libra Dohko. ]]
** [[spoiler: He does, sorta. As he dies during his fight against Libra Dohko, Bennu Kagaho transforms into the Phoenix -- and promises to return from the ashes for the last fight.]]
** Sagittarius Sisyphus also suffers from this. [[spoiler:He let Sphinx Pharaoh rip his heart out just to prove his loyalty to Athena when he could have killed the specter easily. Even if he does manage to perform Athena's Exclamation to allow everybody else to pass as a last stand, it still feels like a pointless death.]]
* TechnicolorFire: Kagaho's "black" flames, Manigoldo's blue flames.
* TearsOfBlood: People from Hades's army weep blood.
* ThemeTwinNaming: Mostly subverted. You have Sage and Hakurei, Thanatos and Hypnos. The only thing in common between Aspros and Defteros is the three last letters.
* TragicVillain: Pandora.
* TrailersAlwaysSpoil: [[spoiler:The opening for the 2nd season shows Sisyphus's corruption and Gemini Aspros.]] The later kind of ironic as the series was CutShort before he showed up.
* TraumaCongaLine: Alone, Sasha, Tenma, [[spoiler: Pandora.]]
* TheUnfavourite: While Aspros was loved and respected by everyone in the Sanctuary, his younger twin Defteros was treated with utter disdain and hostility. Apparently, said treatment is based on an old lore, which claims thats an older Gemini twin shall be born under an auspicious star, while the younger one shall bring disgrace and chaos. [[spoiler: [[{{Irony}} Oh the irony]].]]
* {{Unperson}}: In the backstory, [[spoiler: what Kronos did to Kairos/Youma, erasing all evidence of him from history. It is also the reason of why [[RageAgainstTheHeavens he wants to take down the Olympus Gods]]]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder: V-Z]]
* TheVeryDefinitelyFinalDungeon: Lost Canvas itself.
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler: Several of the Antagonists. Amongst the memorable ones are those of Minos, Aiacos and Youma.]]
* VillainsOutShopping: Hypnos is occasionally seen calmly having tea and enjoying the view from a balcony in the Forest Cathedral. He and Thanatos also seem to be fond of playing chess.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Tenma and Yato.
* WeCanRuleTogether: Alone initially suggests this to Tenma, but naturally he gets rejected.
* WhatBeautifulEyes: When he first met Alone, Dohko got stunned over the beauty of his eyes. Pandora also mentions that Alone's eyes are beautiful and lively, although full of soul-crushing sadness.
* WholeEpisodeFlashback: [[spoiler: Gemini Asperos' descent into infamy, where Virgo Asmita pulls a [[BigDamnHeroes Big Damn Hero]] moment. Gemini Asperos and Gemini Deuteros' past are more thoroughly explored, including their eventual rivalry.]]
* TheWorfEffect: Subverted, when the 18th century Aldebaran goes down killing numerous Specters, including one who nobody else present had a chance against.
* WouldHitAGirl: Leo Regulus has no problems in physically fighting Behemoth Violate.
--> "That Specter is... a woman? Well, I won't be bothered. She's a soldier and a powerful enemy, nothing else matters."
* YouKilledMyFather: Leo Regulus, who is avenging his father Ilias, dead at the hands of Wyvern Rhadamanthys.
* YourPrincessIsInAnotherCastle: [[spoiler: So Tenma has mortally wounded Alone, this is the end, right? Nope, turns out that badly injuring Alone rather than outright killing him allowed Hades to fully manifest right away.]]
