''The Melancholy of Haruhi-chan Suzumiya'' (''Suzumiya Haruhi-chan no Yūutsu'') and ''Nyoron Churuya-san'' are two gag manga spinoffs of ''Literature/HaruhiSuzumiya'', which were adapted to anime by Creator/KyotoAnimation and broadcast on Website/YouTube as three to five-minute shorts.

Both series were formerly available on [[http://www.crunchyroll.com Crunchyroll]], but their rights to the series expired, and were picked up by [[http://www.funimation.com/blog/2014/08/09/home-video-announcements-from-otakon/ Funimation]].

Bandai originally licensed both series and released them on two DVD sets. ''Haruhi-chan'''s manga is licensed by Creator/YenPress.

''The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya-chan'' takes the characters and situations from ''Literature/HaruhiSuzumiya'', {{chibi}}fies them, and turns the madness and comedy up to eleven while adding copious amounts of [[RuleOfCute High-Octane Cute]]. The manga was serialized in ''Shonen Ace'' and ''The Sneaker'' (the magazine where the original light novels were published) from 2007 to 2018.

!!''Haruhi-chan'' provides examples of:

[[folder: Tropes in Haruhi-chan]]

* AllCGICartoon: The first few episodes. It changed to normal 2D animation starting with episode 5, likely due to the cost associated with CG animation.
* AnachronicOrder: Averted. Unlike with the ''Haruhi Suzumiya'' anime's first run and the original LightNovels, the ''Haruhi-chan'' shorts (despite being arranged differently than they are in the manga), have a continuity to them and the jokes from one episode often follow after a previous one.
* {{Angrish}}: Achakura lapses into this when Nagato gives her dog food in a dog bowl to eat.
* ArtShift
** The characters may go back to their normal-looking selves for a gag (and at one point Bishoujo, before reverting back to SuperDeformed style.
** Yuki's doujin VisualNovel.
* AstronomicZoom:
** Every episode of ''Haruhi-chan'' except for episode 25 begins with a zoom from the globe to where Haruhi is standing, which results in the camera zooming in so fast that [[CameraAbuse it slams into Haruhi's face and cracks the screen]].
--->'''Haruhi:''' Here we g-- ''[camera crashes into her face]''
** Episode 19 does an inversion of the trope; when Haruhi thinks she's finally encountered Santa Claus (which is really just Taniguchi in a Santa costume), her excited shout of "Santa!" causes a zoom ''out'' from earth through the solar system and all the way out from the Milky Way.
* AuthorAppeal: Puyo, the creator of the ''Haruhi-chan'' manga, has a fondness for both Tsuruya and Mori despite how they're both minor characters in the original ''Haruhi Suzumiya'' series, and as such they both [[AscendedExtra get more appearances in this series]]. Mori in particular certainly appears a lot; she's even the focus of the first story in volume 4, where Koizumi gets her to [[spoiler:cosplay as Haruhi]]. And if that's not enough to convince you, there's a surprising amount of bonus art of her in casual clothes or with her hair in a ponytail. She even appears in a subplot surrounding Tsuruya harboring unexplained animosity towards her.
* BadassSanta: Haruhi's concept of Santa, part of a clan of super-muscled old ninjas who infiltrate houses and deposit gifts. And she turns poor [[ThoseTwoGuys Taniguchi]] into one.
* BadBadActing - In episode 20.
--> '''Achakura:''' (monotone) Oh, no. Kimidori-san has gone flat.
--> '''Kimidori:''' (equally monotone) I can't go on. Please commit my body to the ocean.
--> '''Achakura:''' (monotone) Sorry, throwing you in the ocean will be environmental destruction.
** And the home-made monster film in episode 25, with visuals to match.
* BattleAura: Used for a game of ''[[MundaneMadeAwesome dodgeball!]]''
* BearsAreBadNews: Tsuruya claims she once defeated a bear.
* BigEater: Yuki gobbling Valentine's day chocolates... priceless.
* BlackHelicopter: Used by the Agency in one episode.
* BlandNameProduct: One of the {{Visual Novel}}s Yuki owns in volume 1 is [[VisualNovel/FateStayNight Fayte/Stay Night]].
* BlankWhiteEyes: Mikuru usually has these when she’s not sporting blank black eyes.
* BlatantLies: Mori after she just jumped through a window.
-->'''Ms. Mori:''' I'm just a normal maid passing through!
** Mori and Arakawa do basically the same thing when they [[MakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext help Kyon dig a hole during a cherry blossom viewing.]]
-->'''Arakawa:''' I'm just a normal taxi driver passing through!
-->'''Ms. Mori:''' I'm just a normal skydiver passing through!
* BloodFromTheMouth:
** Haruhi, after... [[MundaneMadeAwesome taking story suggestions for an amateur film]]. To the extent that she had to be hospitalized, even.
** Also happened when Achakura kicked Yuki in the gut in episode 10.
* BlowYouAway: Tsuruya, as shown in Episode 17. Poor Mikuru.
* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: Yuki's interactions with Achakura seem to follow these quite closely. Yuki's the boke.
* BoxAndStickTrap: Subverted in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vAfgbbCAGY&t=1m54s Episode 8]], Ryoko goes directly to where "Nagato" is hiding and holding the string. Instead, [[KansasCityShuffle she finds out that it's not her, and a cage falls on her, trapping her.]]
* BreakingTheFourthWall:
** Achakura contemplates her previous life, until Kimidori says "I'm not going to let you turn this into a complete episode."
** Kyon asks about another episode's title.
** From Episode 14:
--> '''Kyon:''' YOU! It's terrifying to have a balloon burst in your face!
--> '''Haruhi:''' Uh, Kyon, [[LampshadeHanging a main character]] shouldn't make a face like that.
** From Episode 25, aside from Kyon and Koizumi reacting to the game opening at the beginning of the episode, there’s this from the game itself:
--> '''Nagato(in-game):''' If you'd like...
--> '''Kyon:''' That's from Disappearance!
* BrotherSisterIncest: This might be stretching things, but judging from episode 25's opening, Nagato's game contains a "Kyon's sister" route, so if Kyon's the protagonist...
* ButtMonkey:
** Taniguchi and Achakura.
** To some extent Kyon, who always gets the short end of Haruhi's plans. It's a bit like his role in the series turned up to eleven.
** Haruhi herself in the second episode. In addition to the CameraAbuse she suffers in the intro, she scares away a prospective client, out of frustration and boredom, hurls herself down stairs and later faceplants to the floor from the desk she was lying on, injuring herself.
* CameBackWrong: PlayedForLaughs. When Ryoko Asakura manages to regenerate herself as Achakura, she's barely a couple feet tall, and has lost most of her powers. Not to mention that she has a somewhat childish mentality sometimes, being placated by a merry-go-round treatment, karaoke singing, the "legendary" obi-spin, and a piece of chocolate cake. Later in the manga it's revealed that Asakura can use her powers to a certain extent, but doing so causes her to become ''even tinier''! Kimidori-san shows real concern that if she overdoes it she'll wink out of existence.
* CameraAbuse: The AstronomicZoom mentioned above always ends in the camera smashing into Haruhi's face. It even provides the page image.
* PlayfulCatSmile: Haruhi and Tsuruya.
* CharacterCatchphrase: Yuki's "Oh" after [[BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine outbursts from Achakura]].
* CharacterExaggeration:
** Haruhi is more hyperactive than in the regular series. Conversely, she is A LOT nicer towards Mikuru.
** Mikuru is more moe than in the regular series.
** Koizumi has stopped being ''remotely'' subtle in his ShipperOnDeck activities, taking every opportunity to try to push Kyon into couple up with Haruhi. In volume 4 he's able to force Kyon and Haruhi to go on a scripted date together as a penalty game.
** Kyon is even more of a DeadpanSnarker.
** Yuki is the exception; her stoic demeanour is more frequently broken by her fangirl tendencies, which ''is'' hinted at in the original series, like the masks she buys during Endless Eight. It is like a more selective version of CharacterExaggeration.
* CherryBlossoms: The cherry blossom viewing party where they make Kyon dig a hole and happen to find an alien artifact. This event was actually adapted from the light novels.
* ClothingDamage: Itsuki's shirt gets ripped when Ms. Mori goes flying past him in episode 21.
* ContinuityCameo: Muu-chan, the "Mugen Lion".
* ContinuityNod: Several episodes feature references from previous episodes. For example, the Computer Club's fossilized kappa introduced in episode 5 was stolen by Taniguchi in episode 7. In episode 19, he snuck it back in disguised as Santa.
* ContrivedCoincidence: In episode 19 Taniguchi dresses as Santa and sneaks into the school to put back a gift-wrapped kappa in the Computer Club's room on the same night that Haruhi is holding a Christmas party and has Kyon waiting in the Computer Room to catch Santa.
* CookingDuel: With balloon animals and art, and [[SubvertedTrope it turns out Kyon and Haruhi don't know how to actually make them]].
* {{Cosplay}}: Mikuru and Yuki engage in a cosplay contest. Haruhi is nonplussed.
* CosplayOtakuGirl: Yuki becomes one seemingly overnight, bringing various cosplay outfits to the clubroom and wearing them. Mikuru, who's normally the ReluctantFanserviceGirl forced to cosplay, actually starts to feel threatened by this.
* CountingSheep: Parodied in the first episode, when Kyon attempts to fall asleep by counting sheep, he ends up dreaming of Haruhi in a dog costume walking Mikuru in a sheep costume and using a whip to intimidate her into jumping through a flaming hoop so Kyon can count her.
* CovertPervert: Yuki, though just barely covert, and only because Kyon told her to keep it quiet by using headphones.
* CranialEruption: Yuki and Achakura do this to each other semi-regularly. Haruhi occasionally does it to Kyon.
* CrashIntoHello: Parodied through the VisualNovel that Yuki makes in episode 25 has one. It is set up to be the usual with two people walking into each other at a corner, [[spoiler:but it's Arakawa-san in his car]].
* {{Determinator}}: Kyon, considering how often he blows up.
-->'''Kyon:''' I'm a man with motivation.
* DisappearsIntoLight: Kyon in episode 9. "Hikari ni naru!!!!"
* TheDitz: "Mikuru got confused, and stopped thinking."
* {{Dojikko}}: Itsuki gets into a discussion about Mori dropping by in episode 17, and actually uses the word.
* DoubleKnockout: Episode 10.
* DramaticWind: Episode 17.
* DrivesLikeCrazy: Arakawa. The car is animated as if it's spinning when moving.
* DynamicEntry: Kyon's sister gives one to Kyon in episode 1 with a spinning drill kick.
* EarlyBirdCameo: Churuya's first appearance is actually [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/churuya_1092.png during the intro of episode 25]].
* EmbarrassedByAChild: In episode 7 of the anime, Haruhi organizes her own quirky sports festival, and Kyon falls to this trope [[ButtMonkey just for standing there]], watching the event begin. Then he's used as a rope in an extreme tug-o-war contest and flung up naked, with the kid still watching.
* TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt:
-->'''Kyon:''' [[ItMakesSenseInContext Koizumi, I love you]].
-->*Koizumi blushes*
-->*Haruhi [[http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk318/Anime_Fan_Otaku/Haruhi_feelings_shattered.jpg faints, dark aura appearing,]] [[RealityBreakingParadox reality starts to crack]]*
* EyesAlwaysShut:
** Itsuki, nearly all the time.
** Kyon, every now and then, unless he has BlankWhiteEyes or is looking intense.
* FanService: Itsuki's randomly [[ShirtlessScene open shirt]] in episode 18.
** The manga is even more packed with it, largely due to Haruhi taking any excuse to get the female cast into bikinis.
* FauxYay: Kyon's declaration of love to Koizumi, which nearly caused the world to end.
* FlippingTheTable: Same idea. In Achakura's first episode she becomes increasingly irritated with her treatment by Yuki, culminating when Yuki tries to feed her what appears to be pet food in a doggie dish. Yuki claims that this is a joke and goes to give her some real food but leaves it in the doggie dish, so Achakura flips the dish. Achakura actually does this with a few of the things that Yuki gives her.
* FunSize: Everyone, since they are in chibi form most of the time, but Achakura takes it a step lower.
* GagSeries
* GamerChick: Yuki. Mostly {{Bishoujo Game}}s.
* GayOption: The Doujin Visual Novel that Yuki has Kyon play advertises ten "[[LoveInterest heroines]]": Haruhi, Mikuru, Yuki, [[{{Yandere}} Asakura]], Tsuruya, Mori, [[LittleSisterHeroine Kyon's sister]], and (Emiri) Kimidori. Yes, you counted right. There are eight girls. [[spoiler:The other two are Koizumi and Arakawa]].
%% * Getting Crap Past The Radar: Due to overwhelming and persistent misuse, GCPTR is on-page examples only until 01 June 2021. If you are reading this in the future, please check the trope page to make sure your example fits the current definition.
* GivingUpTheGhost: Happens to several characters, such as the Computer Club members after the dodgeball game in episode 5 or Yuki when Achakura kicks her in the gut for staying up all night playing games.
* GratuitousEnglish:
** "Trick or treat. Search and destroy."
** "Nice Kyon!"
** "Hey Kyon! Pass!"
** "COME BAAAAAAAACK!!!"
** "Too vague."
* {{Hatsuyume}}: The premise of Kyon's dream in episode 01, although with a twist. Koizumi is Mt. Fuji (actually just a regular mountain), Tsuruya is the hawk (or rather, a [[VisualPun crane]] with the heart of a hawk), and Nagato is an eggplant cellphone strap.
* HeroicComedicSociopath: Subverted with Ryoko, as she quickly shows that she legitimately cares for Kimidori and Yuki and put killing Kyon-Kun behind her.
* HeroicSacrifice: Episode 24, by [[spoiler:Kimidori]].
* IAmNotLeftHanded: Mori pulls this in episode 21 [[spoiler:during her rooftop fight with Tsuruya, by getting out of her costume]].
* IdiotHair: Much more noticeable here, always appearing during Haruhi's silly moments.
%%* ImplausibleFencingPowers
%%** In Episode 16, when Yuki sets a sword to homing mode to cut an object in any way possible.
%%** Subverted when Kyon tried it and his wrists got twisted and his body got thrown around like a ragdoll, since it was the first time he had ever used a sword.
* ImTakingHerHomeWithMe: What Yuki does with Achakura. Although she doesn't do it because Achakura is cute, but rather so she can keep an eye on her.
* {{Infodump}}: Parodied. When Yuki was describing a particularly nasty SealedEvilInACan, everyone else promptly announced that the explanation was too long and they couldn't understand it.
* IWasJustPassingThrough: Frequent excuse made by Arakawa and Mori whenever Itsuki calls them in for favors.
* LostInTranslation:
** To western audiences, Tsuruya's obsession with cranes must be a little strange because she doesn't really show it in the actual series. Her obsession with cranes is actually from her name. Her name comes from a popular chain of hotels that utilize the crane as their symbol, due to "tsuru" being the Japanese word for "crane".
** There are frequent text boxes put onscreen at various moments to provide context or explain things that may or may not have been stated in dialogue. Some of the jokes hinge on understanding what they say, yet the English dub always leaves the text untranslated for some reason. While the jokes’ setups are usually funny enough to laugh at even without knowing the punchlines in the text boxes, some things get completely obscured because they're not translated. For example, episode 5 ends with the SOS Brigade winning their dodgeball match against the Computer Club and claiming the kappa skeleton statue they wagered. The last scene shows the Computer Club president still having it and complaining that he doesn't want it, which makes no sense if you couldn't read the text box saying that Mikuru found it too creepy and forced the SOS Brigade to give it back offscreen.
* LudicrousPrecision: Yuki’s helping hand with Mikuru’s job of carving a face into the pumpkin for Halloween consists of telling her how asymmetrical the features are, with the discrepancies given in millimeters.
* LuminescentBlush:
** ''Kyon'' of all people gets one after Yuki thanks him for the balloons.
** Haruhi during her encounter with "Santa".
* MadeOfExplodium: ''Kyon'' in episode 9. No explanation given.
* MoodWhiplash:
** Every time Yuki abuses Achakura and then does something incredibly cute to make up for it.
** Episode 24.
* MundaneMadeAwesome:
** ''Supersonic'' dodgeball. With ''{{Battle Aura}}s''.
** The mock kaiju battle in episode 25, with Mikuru as sort-of Mothra and Yuki as Godzilla. Kyon can only watch in stunned silence.
** And from the same episode - ''Manga/DeathNote''-style ''doodling''.
** Mori and Arakawa's various entrances.
* NinjaMaid: Mori.
* NoodleImplements: Episode 3. We never find out exactly what the "Truck vs Kyon" event involves, but it's hard to forget the line "Here's your firework."
* NotNowWereTooBusyCryingOverYou: Parodied: Kyon and Haruhi are having a blowpipe brawl, and end up hitting Mikuru. Then they're mourning her while learning the lesson about violence that she taught them with her death, just before Mikuru mentions that she's still there.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: PlayedForLaughs in episode 13, when Haruhi asks Koizumi if he knows anything about Halloween and moves on without a thought when he blatantly states that he will pretend not to know for the sake of making things interesting.
* OtakuSurrogate: Yuki inexplicably becomes one in this series, [[RuleOfFunny simply because it's funny]]. She suddenly shows interest in visual novels of the sort made for the male otaku market.
* OutOfCharacterMoment: As you listen to the full intro song, towards the end all three seyus of the girls start to loose their character voice, Mikuru going angry and Nagato losing her monotone singing, for one refrain and then jump back into character for the rest of the song. [[https://www.youtube.com/watchv=FBArHQ2Tdxc#t=184s Listen closely!]][[note]]It's worth noting the ''contents'' of that refrain - namely that they're all BreakingTheFourthWall by complaining about the length of the song, that they're not getting paid enough for it, and begging the fans to consider their suffering.[[/note]]
* PaperThinDisguise:
** [[NinjaMaid Mori]] as a "skydiver who just happened to be passing by"... without a parachute.
** Arakawa counts to a lesser extent with his "taxi driver" who also "just happened to be passing by". [[DeadpanSnarker Kyon]] calls them out almost immediately. Then in volume 5 he uses a school uniform and a wig to stand in for Koizumi at school while Koizumi is away... but neglects to do anything about his moustache.
* {{Parody}}: The intro to the final episode is a DatingSim intro parody.
* PuniPlush
* PunnyName: Achakura is a lisped version of Asakura. "Acha" can also be a "wince in pain" interjection, sometimes reacting to metaphoric pain or even someone else's pain. (E.g., watching someone get hit and saying, "Ooh, that's gotta hurt.")
* ReallyDeadMontage: Happens in episode 24 with [[spoiler:Kimidori, as soon as the Time Bomb explodes. Subverted since he gets better]].
* RelaxOVision: Part of Haruhi's quiz show in episode 3 involves Kyon equipped with fireworks fighting a small pickup truck. It would have been awesome if we weren't seeing Mikuru feeding and playing with her pet lion the whole time.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Kimidori-san.
* TheRival: Tsuruya vs Mori. This reaches ''Manga/DragonBall'' levels.
* RuleOfCute: Aww!!
** Mikuru-chan's crying in episode 12 is the cutest thing '''ever'''! She sounds like a little kitten.
** Kyon's Little Sister shows up in the second New Year's Eve dream sequence. [[spoiler:She's half turned into a cow and is ''adorable!'']]
** What? No mention of Achakura? She's the cutest thing on the show!
%%* RuleOfFunny
%%* RunningGag
* TheScream: Achakura in episode 20.
* SeriousBusiness: The balloon modeling contest, with TrashTalk from Haruhi and Kyon and Itsuki as the judge and commentator.
** Also the dodgeball game. There's freaking [[BattleAura battle auras]] for crying out loud!
* SexySilhouette: Yuki's non-chibi silhouette is visible when she takes a {{shower|Scene}} in episode 24.
* ShirtlessScene: Twice by Itsuki, and both [[FanService completely unnecessary]]. [[LampshadeHanging He even gets called]] for one of those by Kyon.
* ShoutOut:
** One to a particular fan theory—that of Kyon being the real deity in the series—in episode 1. It's even lampshaded.
** "[[spoiler:Yasu]] is the culprit" at the end of the second episode, a memetic phrase referring to the PC/NES mystery game ''VisualNovel/ThePortopiaSerialMurderCase'' and the culprit being [[TheDogWasTheMastermind completely out of left field]]; the game is well known in Japan, but was never exported outside of it. Since the phrase means nothing to most viewers overseas, the English dub replaces it with “TheButlerDidIt”, a close Western equivalent.
** That lion that's seen with Mikuru looks a lot like Sakutaro from ''Umineko''.
** "[[Franchise/SailorMoon Tuxedo Beard]]" anyone? Let's not forget [[Franchise/SuperSentai Supernatural Ranger Team]] was mixed in.
** It wasn't translated into English as such, but in episode 19 Kyon says [[Anime/HellGirl "Ippen shinde miru?"]] to Haruhi.
** Kyon shouting "Hikari ni naru~" (see DisappearsIntoLight) is a direct ShoutOut to ''Anime/GaoGaiGar''.
** That ghostly Santa looks suspiciously like that red-eyed Santa Claus in ''Anime/HareGuu''.
** One of the lines in the intro is [[Manga/DragonBall KA-ME-HA-ME-HA]]!
** The fighting game that Nagato offers to play with Kyon is VideoGame/StreetFighterII with all the characters as cute girls
** Yuki's visual novel in the last episode has the same format, and much the same style, as VisualKei.
** The relationship between Yuki and Achakura has shades of the one between Keroro and Natsumi in ''Manga/SgtFrog'', although with little violence compared to the brutal punishments Keroro is subjected to, to the point that Yuki instead subjects Achakura to fun things to keep her morale up.
* SigningOffCatchphrase: Inverted. "Here we go!" is said at the start of each episode.
* SinisterSilhouettes: Parodied with Asakura claiming to be a member of the [[FourIsDeath Radical Big Four]], which is quickly revealed [[SortingAlgorithmOfEvil to be under]] the [[TerribleTrio three leaders]], all of whom are shown as generic featureless silhouettes. Kyon proceeds to call it cheesy and blame it on [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portopia_Renzoku_Satsujin_Jiken Yasu.]]
* SlowMotionPassBy: In episode 12.
* SortingAlgorithmOfEvil: Parodied in Episode 2, with Asakura claiming there are higher figures in the organisation who will come after Kyon... but they never do.
* SpinningClockHands: While Haruhi and the other girls prepare chocolate sculptures.
* SpitTake: Kyon's understandable reaction to finding out [[HGame what Yuki was doing on her laptop.]]
** He has another one when, while trying not to laugh at Mikuru's attempts at a cosplay war with Yuki, she sneaks up behind him in her frog suit[[note]]The caption says "It's really a bear"[[/note]]. He turns to look, and subsequently laughs.
* SpotlightStealingSquad:
** [[NinjaMaid Mori-san,]] although moreso in the comics than in the animation. Just read any of the mangas and you'll see.
** To a lesser extent, [[{{Chibi}} Achakura]] and [[RidiculouslyCuteCritter Kimidori-san.]]
** As of volume 5, [[{{Bishonen}} Kunikida's]] been getting his fair share too.
* {{Squee}}: An in-story example is Haruhi's reaction to cornering "Santa". Her angrily-flushed cheeks visibly give way to a LuminescentBlush, and the resulting squeal echoes throughout the solar system, and even the galaxy.
* StuffBlowingUp:
** When Nagato ties Achakura to a bunch of hydrogen-filled balloons, they float to the ceiling, hit the lights, and ''blow up the apartment''.
** Also, Kyon blows up during the filming of a drama. Haruhi's comments indicate that he does this on a semi-regular basis.
** There's even a TimeBomb involvement in episode 24.
* SuperDeformed: The predominant art style.
* SuperWindowJump: Via NinjaMaid.
* SurrealThemeTune
** Warning! [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBArHQ2Tdxc&feature=related The following song]] has been known to cause [[YourHeadASplode violent head explosions!]] Proceed at your own risk. The [[http://atashi.wordpress.com/2009/04/26/the-melancholy-of-haruhi-chan-suzumiya-opening-theme-ima-made-no-arasuji/ lyrics]] may or may not be relevant to the show. Nobody's really sure.
** The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQQZXGuN8wQ ending theme]] is somehow even more infectious than the opening. Something about it is so unbelievably cheesy that it rolls all the way over back into awesome. Perhaps it's the fact that the lyrics turn out to be one massive troll to the fans about Season 2.
* SweatDrop
* {{Tsundere}}: Achakura.
* VerbalTic: In the English dub, Tsuruya consistently refers to Haruhi as "Haru-nya", even though the the dub usually changes such terms as "Nagato-chan" to "Ms. Nagato" to make it more palatable for English audiences.
* VillainDecay: {{Parodied|Trope}}. Achakura attempts to avert this shortly after [[CameBackWrong Coming Back Wrong]] by escaping from Yuki's apartment in order to kill Kyon, but rapidly changes her mind after a cat starts eyeing her up for lunch. [[invoked]]
* WallJump: Achakura attempts this in episode 10. Guess how it turned out.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids: In-universe: In the subbed version, Kyon protested that the game Yuki lent him was rated E... [[{{Eroge}} but that didn't stand for "everyone" in this case.]]
* WikiWalk: Lampshaded, complete with step-by-step explanation.
* WireDilemma: Yuki sets one up for Achakura and Kimidori to solve in episode 24. [[spoiler:They don't even bother]].
* WrittenSoundEffect: All the time.
** WrittenRoar: Mikuru's "Honya~!"(ほにぁー!)
* UnwillingSuspension: Mikuru in episode 25.
* VisibleSigh
* VocalEvolution: A version of it. Haruhi's voice is more high pitched and sounds more similar to [[Manga/LuckyStar Konata]] then her main anime counterpart.
* YaoiFangirl:
** Haruhi's script for ''[[IncrediblyLamePun The Gift of the Maid]] II: Stealing Love Within a Month of Death'' has Kyon and Itsuki winning the battle-maid tournament and becoming a couple. Haruhi witnessing Kyon's discovery of a "barrier to the heart" put her in a short-term amnesiac coma.
** Yuki's visual novel starring the cast included Itsuki and Arakawa as possible paths for Kyon!

----
''Nyoron Churuya-san'' follows the adventures of Tsuruya's super deformed counterpart Churuya as she quests for smoked cheese, [[FailureIsTheOnlyOption almost always unsuccessfully.]] Also featured is Ashakura, Ryoko's counterpart with a [[StalkerWithACrush massive, but ultimately doomed crush]] on Kyon. Originally a series of [[{{Doujinshi}} fan comics]] by Eretto that were posted online, the manga was later serialized in ''Comp Ace'' from 2008 to 2009.

Everyone besides Churuya and Ashakura is rendered with the same generic, non-super-deformed body with EyesAlwaysShut, and they're all general {{jerkass}}es. Still, Churuya usually gets a happy ending after enduring some hardships throughout the rest of the episode.

* AllCGICartoon
* BlankWhiteEyes: To the point of being downright creepy.
* BrickJoke: In episode 1, Churuya asks Mikuru how to make smoked cheese, only to be told to go Google it. In the very next episode, Churuya looks up smoked cheese on Google, only to be denied by Kyon.
* ButtMonkey: Churuya and Ashakura being the butt monkeys is pretty much the entire point of the series.
** Hokori-chan.
* CatchPhrase:
** Churuya: "Nyoro~n".
** Ashakura: "Sore Muri" ("Not Possible").
** Kyon: "Da-me" ("No No"), with his arms making an X when he says it.
* PlayfulCatSmile: Churuya and Ashakura's default expression.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Ashakura towards Kyon.
* CreepyMonotone: Everyone except Churuya and Ashakura, moreso in the dub. Mikuru gains a completely deadpan, borderline masculine voice.
* DisneyAcidSequence: The dream sequence in the final episode. "Sumochi Banzai! Sumochi Banzai! Sumochi Banzai..."
* DullSurprise[=/=]EyesAlwaysShut: Everyone other than Churuya and Ashakura. Including Shamisen.
* FailureIsTheOnlyOption: Churuya says "nyoro~n" whenever she can't get what she wants, which is all the time. Likewise, Ashakura will never get Kyon’s affection.
* FestivalEpisode
* FunSize: Churuya and Ashakura.
** The series being what it is, Churuya's short stature and stubby arms hinder more than they help.
* GoldfishScoopingGame: [[FailureIsTheOnlyOption Guess whether or not she catches one.]]
* GratuitousEnglish
** "Made in Japan?"
** "Merry Christmas."
** "Hey, taxi~."
** "Google it."
** "One, two, three..."
* HonestAxe: Episode 7.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Kyon with Churuya and Ashakura.
* HostileShowTakeover: Ashakura attempts to rename ''Nyoron Churuya-san'' in the beginning of episode 8, holding up a sign saying that the new title is ''Sore Muri Ashakura-san''.
* ImageSong: Six for Churuya - two solos and four duets. D'awww~
* KeepItForeign: The "Why?" -> "Naze?" line by Kyon to Ashakura in episode 7, a direct reference to the main series.
* LiteralMinded: This exchange, coupled with a bit of jerkassery:
-->'''Ashakura:''' Kyon, when I think about you, my heart beats so hard that I can't sleep.
-->'''Kyon:''' You're going to die.
* MandatoryLine: Yuki, Itsuki, and Mikuru don't get much screentime and some episodes have them say just one line. Others don't have them present at all. Even Haruhi fails to appear sometimes.
* MonochromaticEyes: Churuya and Ashakura have solid black eyes.
* OnlySixFaces: Literally everyone but Churuya and Ashakura have the same exact face. Including Shamisen, ''the cat''. Even the Goldfish has the same face.
* PluckyGirl: Churuya.
* {{Portmanteau}}: Starting with episode 2, Churuya refers to smoked cheese as "sumochi".
** "Nyoro~n" is itself a portmanteau of canon Tsuruya's CatchPhrase, "nyoro~", and "shobon", an expression of disappointment.
* PrettyBoy:
** Kyon and Itsuki get bishie shots in their host suits in episode 12, complete with {{Bishie Sparkle}}s.
** In the episode where the whole group is having a scavenger hunt Kyon, as part of the game, tells Itsuki that he loves him, causing Itsuki's face to go totally {{bishonen}}, or arguably bishojo, complete with DramaticWind and flower petals.
** This is a RunningGag with Kunikida, who is regularly forced to cross-dress and is the only boy allowed to show his face in the "all-girls beach fanservice" chapter in volume 6.
* ProductPlacement: One segment involves Churuya googling smoked cheese, even using the actual site instead of a BlandNameProduct.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Hokori-chan is a ridiculously cute dust-bunny.
* RuleOfCute
* RunningGag
** Hokori-chan getting sucked up by Churuya.
** Churuya finding Taniguchi or Kyon in random places.
** Kyon's "No-No" signs.
* SpearCounterpart: The dust bunny Hokori-kun. Appears to protect Hokori-chan from the vacuum, but fails.
* StalkerWithACrush: Ashakura towards Kyon.
* TheStoic: Surprisingly, not just Yuki.
* SuperDeformed: Churuya and Ashakura.
* TertiarySexualCharacteristics: Hokori-chan wears pink hairbows on her GirlishPigtails.
* TeruTeruBozu: When Churuya notices it raining outside, she sets this on the windowsill. After it stops raining, she pats the doll on the head and tells it that it did a good job.
* ThrowTheDogABone:
** Kyon decided to give Churuya some smoked cheese for Christmas.
** Also, in one incident of the chain-yanking example, Churuya gets to see the sakura tree blossoming.
** In the final episode, Churuya invites Ashakura to have a sleepover at Kyon's house.
* TookALevelInJerkass: The whole cast except Churuya. Especially jarring with Mikuru.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Churuya and smoked cheese. The whole thing got started because the creator of the yonkoma [[AuthorAppeal happens to like it]].
* WorldOfJerkass: In the extremely strange world of ''Nyoron Churuya-san'', everyone except Churuya (and the dust bunnies) is an unhelpful asshole who often inconveniences her or obstructs her pursuit of fun and smoked cheese for no reason. Ashakura is a bit friendlier, but even she gets petty and hostile when she thinks Churuya is too close to Kyon.
* VerbalTic: You know the one. :3 nyoro~n...
** Also the dust bunnies end their sentences with "hokori" ("dusty" in the dub).
* YankTheDogsChain: Poor Churuya expects to go on a trip with the SOS Brigade, but Haruhi cancels it when she's already at the place.
* {{Yonkoma}}: What the series is based on.
