''Fruits Basket'' is a [[ShoujoDemographic shoujo]] manga series written and illustrated by Creator/NatsukiTakaya. It first ran in Hakusensha's ''Magazine/HanaToYume'' magazine from July 1998 to November 2006.

After the death of her mother, young Tohru Honda has been secretly living on her own in a tent. Her life changes forever when she stumbles upon the secret of the estate she is living on illegally: the land is owned by [[TheClan the Sohma family]], who are afflicted by a HereditaryCurse that changes thirteen members of the family into animals of the EasternZodiac (plus the Cat, an animal who would have been part of the Zodiac but was left out) when they are hugged by someone of the opposite sex that is not also a Zodiac member. Oh, and the family is a hotbed of horribly {{abusive parents}} and [[BigScrewedUpFamily children with enough emotional issues to make a shrink very wealthy]].

Upon being discovered and taken in by the Sohmas, sweet-natured Tohru becomes embroiled in the dysfunctional family's various crises, bringing the outside world to the closed-off family while also having to confront some issues of her own.

One of the best-selling shoujo manga series in both Japan and America, ''Fruits Basket'' is often the second best-selling manga series in the US ''period'', beat only by [[Manga/{{Naruto}} a certain ninja]]. Originally translated to completion by Creator/{{Tokyopop}}, the story was re-translated and re-released in omnibus format by Creator/YenPress in North America.

The series was first adapted as an anime TV series in 2001, which ran from July 5 to December 27 on Creator/TVTokyo. It was produced by Creator/StudioDeen and directed by Akitaroh Daichi.

In July 2015, Takaya announced that ''Fruits Basket'' would be receiving a [[http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2015/07/16-1/fruit-basket-mange-new-series-another-to-launch-in-september sequel]] in the form of a side story titled ''Fruits Basket another''. Taking place after the main trio graduate, the story focuses on a young girl named Sawa Mitoma instead as she goes through her first days in high school. The side story premiered online starting in September 2015, and ended with three volumes in 2018. This sequel has a few one-shots written after the conclusion of the main manga, however.

Another post-series spinoff, ''Fruits Basket: The Three Musketeers Arc'', concerns the titular trio of Shigure, Hatori, and Ayame discussing the aftermath of the main story. This lasted for three chapters, but was announced to have a follow-up installment.

In November 2018, it was announced that ''Fruits Basket'' would have a second animated adaptation produced by Creator/TMSEntertainment and directed by Yoshihide Ibata, that [[TruerToTheText follows the original manga's story more closely]]. It premiered on TV Tokyo (which also aired the first anime) in April 2019; the second season premiered in April 2020 and the third and final season premiered in April 2021, nearly twenty years after the 2001 anime's premiere. The 2019 anime is also licensed by Creator/{{Funimation}} and features {{Role Reprise}}s from several core members of its English voice cast.

The series received a compilation film titled ''Fruits Basket: Prelude'', which premiered on February 18, 2022. It recaps the 2019 anime series, and includes a prequel episode titled ''Kyо̄ko to Katsuya no Monogatari'' that focuses the backstories of Tohru's parents and how they got together, which the 2019 anime didn't adapt, and an original story written by Takaya set after the series.

* AbusiveParents: Be thankful you weren't raised in this series. If your parents aren't abusive, they'll be dead in five minutes. The only characters who don't have abusive parents grow up to hate themselves. In the case of the Sohma clan, it's justified: dealing with a HereditaryCurse that locks a whole clan in a cycle of abuse that's lasted for generations doesn't make anyone good parent material.
** If you want a full list, we've got:
*** Yuki and Ayame, whose parents [[spoiler:kicked Ayame out at a very young age and used Yuki's existence purely for self-gain, since the Rat is considered "special" by the Sohma family, worth a lot of money and prestige for the parents]].
*** Kyo, whose dad [[spoiler: blames him for his mom committing suicide, despite how it was ''him'' abusing her for giving birth to the cat that drove her to it. She in turn kept Kyo from going outside and pretended to love his true form when she didn't, until she couldn't pretend anymore and killed herself]].
*** Momiji, whose mother [[spoiler:went insane over the fact that her son could turn into a rabbit, and chose to have all her memories of him erased, to the point where only his father is left to care for him, which he fails to do by abandoning Momiji to live a peaceful life with his wife and new daughter]].
*** Rin, whose parents were actually fun and nurturing until she asked them a simple question, then [[spoiler: they flipped out, stopped pretending to love her, and physically and mentally abused her so badly that her health deteriorated (including stress-induced ulcers!), and eventually abandoned her after their abuse left her hospitalized]].
*** Kyoko Honda, whose parents emotionally neglected her because they were more focused on what neighbors thought than what their daughter wanted, then kicked her out when she got hospitalized trying to leave the gang.
*** Arisa Uotani, whose father was an alcoholic and whose mother left him for another man. [[spoiler: Though a quick scene in the present shows that her relationship with her father is better now.]]
*** Kakeru Manabe and Machi Kuragi, whose father is filthy rich and as a result, their respective mothers (one in marriage, one a mistress) forced them to be the best at everything to compete with each other for his money and influence. (At least until Kakeru finally told his mom to back off.)
*** Machi got the worst of it. While her mother gave up pushing her when she no longer had to compete with the mistress's son, she is still very critical and dismissive of her daughter, and blames her for being "dull" when the whole reason Machi became so was to live up to her mother's ridiculously high expectations. [[spoiler: Machi's parents also kicked her out the second she tried to interact with her baby brother, because they assumed she had "always been jealous" of him and wanted to murder him, when all she wanted to do was cover him with a blanket so he wouldn't be cold.]]
*** While Kagura isn't hit with as much abuse as the others, her parents are always fighting. They fought so much that she spent a large portion of her childhood hating herself, believing that they fought because she was one of the Zodiac.
*** [[spoiler:Akito]] is actually one of the characters who received the worst abuse. [[spoiler:Ren, her mother,]] hated her for getting attention from [[spoiler:Akira, her father,]] and thus proceeded to mistreat and belittle her at every turn, one of the worst examples being [[spoiler: forcing her to live as a man so that she could be the only woman Akira loved]].
*** For a very short while, [[spoiler:Kyoko]] was this to [[spoiler:Tohru]], in the form of neglect. [[spoiler: After Katsuya's death, Kyoko fell into a state of despair in which she did nothing but lie on the floor all day, not feeding or looking after her daughter. Katsuya's father often came to their home to take care of Tohru, and for days he was not around, Tohru took care of both herself and her mother.]] She gets better when she [[spoiler:travels to the sea to commit suicide, and hears a child crying for her mother. This reminds her of her daughter, alone at home, and she rushes back to Tohru, vowing to never abandon her again]].
* ActorAllusion:
** Creator/RieKugimiya voiced a character named Kagura. [[Manga/{{Gintama}} Sound]] [[VideoGame/Onmyoji2016 familiar]]?
** In the dub, [[Creator/TiaBallard Kagura]] called Kyo [[Anime/DarlingInTheFranXX "darling"]].
** The 2019 anime sees Haru throw a catchphrase from one of Creator/KyleHebert's more known roles in President Takei's face.
--->'''Haru:''' ''[to Takei]'' [[Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann Just who the hell do you think you are?]]
** God's apparance late in the last season of the anime came shortly after the conclusion of another series (or rather, [[WebVideo/CriticalRole campaign]]) where Creator/MatthewMercer is the god of a world.
** Maaya Sakamoto, the Japanese voice of Akito in the 2019 anime, also played Haruhi Fujioka in ''Anime/OuranHighSchoolHostClub'', [[spoiler: another female character who poses as a boy.]]
* AdaptationDistillation: Due to the first anime only running 26 episodes, a lot of events were moved around in the 2019 anime:
** The chapter where Tohru first visits the Sohma estate and the chapter where she first sees Hatori's Zodiac form are combined into one episode in both adaptations of the anime.
** In the manga, Tohru meets Hiro and Ritsu ''after'' the incident [[spoiler:with Kyo's "true" form]], but in the first anime, it happens before, since their particular meetings are self-contained. Rin and Kureno's meetings with Tohru, on the other hand, take place during the Beach Arc, so they don't appear in the first anime.
** In the 2001 anime, Mayuko-sensei is replaced with the gym teacher in all of her scenes, and she isn't mentioned when Ayame gives Hatori the pictures of [[spoiler:Kana's wedding]], which he got from her in the manga.
** In episode 3 of the 2019 anime, some events from chapter 8 (the preparations for the culture fest, Momiji's first meeting with Tohru, and the riceball analogy) are moved here. The last one nicely foreshadows episode 5, however.
** Episode 6 combines the culture fest with the sleepover. The two events also occur in reverse order, transitioned by Tohru accidentally slipping out that she's been staying with the Somas when Uo and Hana confront her about being casual with Yuki.
** Episode 23 has the SickEpisode in its first half, extracting the PoorCommunicationKills that resulted from Kyo taking leeks from Yuki's garden. The second half has the buildup to Kazuma's introduction and foreshadowing for [[spoiler:Kyo's true form]].
** Two of Hanajima's most significant focal chapters in the series - the Yuki Fan Club's visit to her house, as well as her backstory - are placed back to back in season one of the 2019 anime as episodes 21 and 22, respectively. In the manga, these events occur at completely separate times; Hana's backstory is not seen for several ''volumes'' after the Yuki Fan Club's visit.
** The 2019 anime, aside from some brief references from Kyoko here and there, completely removes her backstory with Katsuya. However, it was later announced that Kyoko and Katsuya's backstory would be covered in 2022 with their own anime, ''Kyoko to Katsuya no Monogatari''.
** The 2019 anime removed some rather notable [[spoiler:Yuki/Machi]] moments, which results in their relationship progressing at a much faster rate than the more natural development they were provided in the manga.
** The 2019 anime also removed [[spoiler:Komaki, Kakeru's girlfriend, whose father also died in the same car accident that killed Kyoko and causes some tension between Kakeru and Tohru because of it.]]
** In the manga, Kyo [[spoiler:is barred from visiting Tohru in the hospital after Yuki tells Hana and Uo about what Kyo said to her]], but the 2019 anime removes this moment and reframes it so that Kyo [[spoiler:is simply avoiding her. This makes Kyo's decision to simply abandon her seem a lot more preemptive, as opposed to a reaction to Hana and Uo's wrath/being told that Tohru does not want to see him. Yuki's rant however, is more powerful as a result because he knows Kyo's running away from his problems again]].
* AdaptationDyeJob: In the first anime.
** Tohru's eyes are changed from brown to blue and Kyo's bracelet is no longer red and white (which changes its origins). There are other hair and eye variations too, however Tohru's the most prominent.
** Kazuma Sohma, aka [[EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep Shishou/Master]], has his hair changed from brown to silver.
** Motoko's hair is dark grey, but the 2001 anime changes her hair color to a reddish brown. This is likely because in the manga her hair [[ShadingColourDissonance is shaded in a similar way to Kyo's hair, which is orange]].
** An interesting example in the 2019 anime; the red hat Tohru has that turns out to be a ''major'' ChekhovsGun is now a pale blue. This is particularly important because [[spoiler:it changes the symbolism behind the hat's origins; although Yuki was the young boy who gave Tohru the hat, the hat itself actually belonged to Kyo, thus the manga gives it a color associated with Kyo instead of one associated with Yuki. This also means that Yuki's comment about the hat not suiting him no longer holds the same meaning as it did in the manga.]]
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance:
** In the 2019 anime, Momiji makes his first appearance in episode 3, at a far earlier point than he did in the manga. Justified, as the material was a bit short and borrows that scene from chapter 8.
** Uotani's story about how she met Tohru and Kyoko is brought up much earlier in the 2019 anime, taking place before Tohru meets Kisa and Kazuma Sohma and before the rainy season starts.
** In both anime adaptations, Hiro and Ritsu are introduced before Kazuma shows up instead of afterward. Mine was also introduced before him in the first anime.
** In the 2019 anime, Hana's WholeEpisodeFlashback is also much earlier, placed right before Kazuma's first appearance (in the manga, it was placed after Yuki officially became student council president).
* AdaptationExpansion: While the 2019 anime follows the manga much more closely than the 2001 anime did, it also adds and alters scenes to fill in the runtime.
** In episode 4, Kagura decides to make dinner for the family and ends up having to run to the store after she destroys their meal while beating up Kyo. Tohru gets the chance to have one-on-one bonding time with her when she follows her to the store and they walk home together. The scene where Tohru learns about Kyo's passion for martial arts is also altered; as it takes place before Kagura finishes cooking rather than before bedtime like in the manga.
** In episode 5, additional scenes showed what Yuki and Kyo were doing as they searched for the Honda home while Tohru herself had to face her relatives.
** Episode 7 adds an expanded flashback of [[spoiler:Akito pulling an EyeScream on Hatori's left eye, complete with ''blood''. It would seem like a GoryDiscretionShot like the manga... but then the GoryDiscretionShot got '''[[AvertedTrope averted]]''' right after that first flashback and we're shown to how the EyeScream happened in the first place during the latter half of the episode]]! Yikes...
** In episode 8, we get to see what Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo were doing in between the latter two making it home and the three of them watching the New Year's sunrise on the roof. Uo-chan is also shown calling Tohru to check in on her.
** Episode 14 shows that [[spoiler:Momiji's mom [[BungledSuicide attempted suicide by stabbing herself with a pair of scissors]] in her insanity, causing the talk between Momiji and his dad afterwards to be done ''outside her operating room'']].
** Mitsuru has a part in episode 19, and [[ShipTease she and Ritsu manage to connect very well]] after a trick from Shigure and an accidental ruined story draft, the latter of which was the reason for Ritsu's more serious InterruptedSuicide here.
** Episode 24 makes TheReveal of [[spoiler:the cat's true form]] much more tense by [[spoiler:actually showing Kyo's (painful) transformation into the form, and having him use enough force to send Tohru flying into a pond when he's trying to scare her away.]]
** Half of episode 29 expands on the effect [[spoiler:being dumped by Rin]] has on Haru, and the other characters planning events for summer vacation.
** Late in the series, [[spoiler:when Akito gives Rin her TraumaticHaircut, she just cuts off the ends of a bunch of clumps, making Rin look quite a bit more crude by the time she's rescued. This implies she got her short cut offscreen to at least look more presentable to others]].
* AdaptationInducedPlotHole: [[spoiler: The first anime made the wrong call on Akito's gender.]] To be fair, this wasn't revealed until a much later point in the manga than the first anime ended on.
* AdaptationalJerkass: In the manga, while the disdain Tohru's relatives (except her grandfather) held for her is certainly there, it was far more downplayed compared to the 2019 anime where they make their apathy and disdain for her ''much'' more explicit.
* AdaptationalNiceGuy: In the 2019 anime, Uo and Hana are concerned about [[spoiler:why Kyo hasn't shown up to visit Tohru in the hospital]], implying they weren't told the full circumstances that led to it. In the manga, [[spoiler:they flat-out ban Kyo from visiting Tohru until he apologized for rejecting her love confession]].
* AdultsAreUseless:
** The absolute Sohma family hierarchy with Akito on top means that nobody prevents or intervenes in the event of physical or emotional abuse that occurs regularly within the family at Akito's hands regardless of what they think. {{Discussed|Trope}} and lampshaded from time to time by Hatori and Shigure: Hatori laments from time to time that "[the older zodiac members] really suck at [protecting the younger ones from Akito]," while Shigure prefers to [[TheChessmaster allow things to play out]].
** Momiji's father asks his son to accept that his mother's memory of him needs to be erased in order for her to get better, noting that he'll "love Momiji twice as much" to make up for the lack of his mother's later on. It's implied that this meant leaving Momiji to live on his own, asking Momiji to avoid his mother and sister whenever possible and making him give up violin for the sake of keeping said sister in the dark, while Momiji's father went on to continue to live happily with his wife and new child.
* AgeGapRomance:
** Kyoko and Katsuya, with an age difference of eight years.
** [[spoiler:Uotani and Kureno]], with a difference of nine years.
** The implied relationship between Saki and Kazuma, with a difference of at least ''20 years''. This is subverted as they don't actually get together.
** Also possibly [[spoiler:Akito and Shigure]], who are between seven and nine years apart.
* AllLovingHero: Tohru Honda. But even here, her kind nature [[DeconstructedTrope has its faults]].
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer:
** As a young girl, Tohru was frequently mocked by her kindergarten peers. In fact, the title of the series lampshades this trope: after the kids humiliate her during a game of [[TitleDrop Fruits Basket]] (essentially a version of "Duck Duck Goose" but with fruit names) by designating her as a rice ball instead of a fruit and never calling on her during the game, Tohru thinks "there's no place for me, a rice ball, in a fruits basket." Her experiences with being bullied are what later allow her to help Kisa through her own issues with school bullying.
** Due to their disapproval of his marriage to FormerTeenRebel Kyoko, Katsuya's relatives treat Tohru very much like an outsider, with her grandfather as the noteworthy exception shown in the series.
** Sohma tradition dictates that the one cursed by the Cat is an outcast and an abomination who exists solely to be shunned and persecuted by the entire family, and Kyo is no exception; Yuki and Akito are among his most frequent tormentors. According to Shigure, the Cat exists solely to be looked down on and ostracized by the rest of the Zodiac just so they can feel their own lives are better by comparison.
* AlwaysCamp: Ayame Sohma.
* AnimalMotifs: While more obvious for certain characters than others, the cursed Sohmas' animal forms tend to reflect their personalities: Yuki (the rat) is quiet and shrewd, Kyo (the cat) is impulsive and hotheaded but defrosts to certain people he chooses, Shigure (the dog) is laidback and friendly but occasionally sly, etc.
* {{Animorphism}}: The Sohma family curse affects thirteen members of the family, each of whom are possessed by the spirits of one of the animals of the EasternZodiac plus the Cat, an animal who would have become part of the Zodiac if the Rat hadn't tricked it. They transform into these animals whenever they're hugged by someone of the opposite sex who isn't cursed or when their bodies are very weak.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: During the beach vacation, Hiro asks Tohru why she constantly talks about her mother but never says anything about her father. Tohru is very clearly shaken by this question, and her behavior afterwards is a major indicator that [[StepfordSmiler she's not as positive as she seems]]. It's even lampshaded as everyone else can sense that it clearly affected Tohru, and even Hiro himself realizes that it was a pretty loaded question.
* ArtEvolution: The art gets very noticeably better as the manga goes on, starting from around the end of volume 2. Many characters such as Yuki and Akito originally had rather thin, ''pointy'' faces that filled out and softened up as the manga continued. This prompted the character designs being changed for the second anime, which look like they did later on.
* AudioAdaptation:
** There's [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fruits_Basket#Other an old CD drama]] that was released by ''Hana to Yume'' before the anime started, featuring short original stories. It also had [[TheOtherDarrin a different voice cast]].
** There is also [[http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2012/10/22-1/fruits-basket-anime-cast-voice-special-dvd a new DVD]] released to celebrate Takaya's 20 years as a manga author via [[http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2012-10-19/fruits-basket-voice-comic-reunites-cast-for-last-chapter making a drama CD version]] of the last chapters.
** Online reviewer WebVideo/JesuOtaku did a radio drama adaptation of the manga for a few years, but sadly went incomplete. Episodes and downloads can be found [[http://furubadrama.weebly.com/index.html here]].
* AuthorAppeal: if you hadn't noticed, the author enjoys AgeGapRomance.
* BabiesEverAfter: The epilogue shows us [[spoiler:Tohru and Kyo's granddaughter, though it isn't clear which of her parents are Tohru and Kyo's child]]. The sequel ''Another'' confirms that [[spoiler:they had three children, with their eldest son Hajime being on of the main characters.]]
* TheBeastmaster: The Zodiac members do have the ability to attract and (sometimes) control whatever animal they are possessed by. However, only Yuki is seen actually utilizing the latter ability in the early chapters to help him dig out Tohru's belongings after her tent is buried in the aftermath of a landslide. Kyo is regularly mocked by people who don't know his secret, who suggest that he should become a "Cat Trainer" given how cats are attracted to him.
* TheBeautifulElite: The cursed Sohmas are, to a one, very good-looking, or, at the least, possessing great charisma. They're also, as a family, very rich, owning generous amounts of land, their own hot-springs resort, and private drivers whenever they wish.
* BerserkButton:
** Yuki is pretty much a walking berserk button for Kyo, especially when the former calls him a "stupid cat."
** Hatsuharu doesn't like to be called a "dumb ox", just because his Zodiac animal was tricked in the story.
** The best way to set Akito off is to be a [[spoiler: male]] Zodiac member who wants to leave the family or become romantically involved with someone; or be an outsider who wants to enter a relationship with a Zodiac member. Akito will ''wreck'' you. (Or your loved one.)
* TheBet: Two bets run through the series and drive much of the plot:
** Kyo made a bet with Akito that if he could beat Yuki at anything even once before he graduated high school, the Cat would be made part of the Zodiac [[spoiler:and Kyo wouldn't be confined to the Cat's Room for life]]. He [[AlwaysSecondBest never succeeds]], and it's implied to be because due to the curse, the Cat ''can't'' beat the Rat at anything no matter what, making his bet an ImpossibleTask. Ultimately rendered moot by the end of the series, [[spoiler:when the curse breaks and a newly [[HeelFaceTurn Heel-Face Turned]] Akito tears the Cat's Room down]].
** Tohru's very presence at Shigure's house is revealed to be the result of a bet Akito made. [[spoiler:Ren made a bet with Akito that the Zodiac members would willingly gravitate toward and bond with an AllLovingHero like Tohru than an abusive PsychopathicWomanchild like Akito, thus proving that the curse cannot truly force the Zodiac members to love their God; if Ren won, Akito would have to leave the family for good. Ren ultimately wins, but it's [[MeaninglessVillainVictory rendered pointless]] because she didn't expect Tohru to extend her kind hand towards Akito as well, allowing her to [[HeelRealization realize her flaws]] and let the past go, thus allowing the curse to break and Akito to move on. Effectively, if Ren had never proposed the bet, [[NiceJobFixingItVillain Akito never would have redeemed herself and the curse would never have broken]].]]
* BigBad: Akito is directly responsible for a good portion of the problems several of the Sohmas dealt with. [[spoiler:Ren was the one that ultimately pushed Akito over the edge.]]
* BigDamnHeroes: When Yuki goes with his mother to a parent teacher meeting to discuss his future post high-school, she coldly dictates her chosen path for him, ignoring or overriding both Yuki and his teacher's objections... Until Ayame shows up, drives their mother into {{Rage Quit}}ting, and takes over the meeting. This marks the point of true reconciliation between the brothers.
* BigDamnHug: [[spoiler:In the final part of the story, Kyo finally confesses his love for Tohru and asks her to give him a hug, even though both expect the curse will trigger his transformation again. They tenderly embrace each other and surprisingly, Kyo ''doesn't'' turn into a cat, proving that the curse has been broken.]]
* BigFancyHouse: The main household of the Sohma clan as described and shown in the 2019 anime is described to be having around '''150 buildings''' in a very large land. 50 buildings for the inside circle of the household and 100 for those outside the main family circle. Making this an exaggerated trope. Granted, it can be justified because the Sohma family is just ''that'' big.
* BigScrewedUpFamily: The Sohma clan is all over the map with the myriad ways to screw with a child - if a method of parenting can cause psychological problems, rest assured that at least one member of the family is doing it. As indicated by the flashback showing Ren's early days with Akira, the nasty backbiting and poisoning opinions for influence has been going on for generations, and the penultimate chapter implies that this might have been part of the Sohma family curse as well. To put it another way, there's a grand total of ''three'' caring biological parents in this family still alive at the start of the series, Hiro's mother, Kisa's mother and Ritsu's mother, and the latter's parenting has its own issues. Including living adoptive parents bumps that number up to ''four''.
* BishieSparkle: With an entire cast of {{Bishonen}}, this naturally happens a lot, but most notably during Tohru's daydream of "if Yuki and Kyo got along".
* BlankWhiteEyes: Used to great effect throughout the series, especially by mild-mannered characters shocked with the insanity around them.
* BodyToJewel: The beads of Kyo's bracelet [[spoiler:that he needs to wear to not transform into a monster]] are said to have been made out of the bones and blood of a monk.
* {{Bowdlerise}}: The 2001 anime's episode 4 had, in a childhood flashback, Kagura about to throw a giant boulder at Kyo, a change from the manga's depiction of her pulling a knife on him. Averted in the 2019 anime, which keeps the manga's version.
* BoyfriendBluff: Kyo pulls a non-verbal version of this to protect Tohru from some guys that want to take advantage of her.
* BrattyHalfPint: Hiro Sohma
* BreakingTheFourthWall: After tripping Kyo, Hatsuharu turns to warn the viewers "DontTryThisAtHome" and in the English dub, Kyo asks him [[AudienceWhatAudience who the hell he's talking to]]. Later, Tohru comments "Somehow this has turned into a fighting anime".
* BreakUpDemand: Akito is fond of this, due to the obsessive need to keep the Zodiac members close by any means necessary. Akito doesn't demand break ups verbally so much as lash out at to one half of the relationship that leads the other half to break the relationship off. [[spoiler:She objected so violently to Hatori and Kana asking to marry that she injured Hatori's eye, then blamed Kana for his injury, leading Kana to blame herself; Kana fell into such a deep depression that she had to have all her memories of Hatori erased to get better. Akito also hospitalized Rin and threatened to do the same to Haru unless she broke up with him, and she also got Kisa hospitalized to intimidate Hiro into distancing himself from her.]]
* BrickJoke: When the concept of Tohru having a lover is brought up, Uo thinks she and Hana should crash her first date. At the end of the story, that's exactly what happens.
* BrokenBird: Isuzu/Rin Sohma. [[spoiler:And Akito.]]
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: Kyo and Tohru fit this to a T. To a lesser extent, Hiro and Kisa as well.
* BullyBrutality: Hanajima was a victim of this in the past. She nearly killed a male bully with her PsychicPowers after he [[ForceFeeding force fed her]] a life newt, and later, several girls went so far as to ''burn her with a match'' just to see if she'd react and use her waves on them.
* ButNotTooForeign: Momiji is half-German and speaks German fluently from time to time in the manga, but he is also half-Japanese.
* CallBack: One of the last chapters of the manga has [[spoiler:Tohru falling off a cliffside that crumbles underneath her - the same cliffside that Shigure told her was unstable in the very first chapter]].
* CastFullOfPrettyBoys: {{Justified|Trope}} and {{lampshade|Hanging}}d as the Sohma being TheBeautifulElite, but in fact it goes way further than just them.
* CaughtTheHeartOnHisSleeve: During the class trip to Kyoto, Tohru gets scared that Kyo will one day abandon her after she sees him ignoring a cat. In her panic, she grabs the bottom of his jacket as if quietly begging him to stay.
* CensorSteam: When the Sohmas turn back from animals into (completely naked) humans, the transformation is accompanied by smoke clouds that handily obscure almost everything naughty.
* CerebusSyndrome: Although the general message of the series is of ThePowerOfFriendship and ThePowerOfLove, and its sense of humor never quite goes away, the story eventually becomes more serious as the characters' various issues are further explored and it's made clear just how much of a BigScrewedUpFamily the Sohma clan really is thanks to the curse.
* CerebusRetcon:
** Early on in the manga, Kyo and Yuki's rivalry is PlayedForLaughs. The reasons behind it, revealed [[CerebusSyndrome later in the story]], are [[DarkAndTroubledPast decidedly not]].
** Tohru's habit of [[TalkingToTheDead narrating events and her thoughts to her mother]] comes across as a cute quirk...until near the end where her ''massive'' GuiltComplex and issues revolving around her mother's death are uncovered, explaining that [[spoiler: Tohru keeps a hold of her mother and her memories with her out of fear of "losing" her and promised to herself to keep her mother as her most important person so as to not "remove" her from her life.]]
** In the present day, Hanajima's PsychicPowers are often used for humorous situations, particularly when she uses them to intimidate the Prince Yuki Fanclub whenever they try to harass Tohru. Her backstory reveals that her powers were a much more serious issue for her when she was younger, since she [[PowerIncontinence didn't have as much control over her abilities]] and she was bullied and ostracized at school for having them.
* TheChessmaster: [[spoiler: ''Shigure'']] is revealed to be this near the end; almost everything that happened in the series, even events as early on as [[spoiler: inviting Tohru to live with them after finding her in the woods]], were all orchestrated by him. The few things he ''doesn't'' predict tend to involve [[spoiler: Kureno, particularly when Akito brings him to the summer house]] - and he brings up those seemingly small miscalculations often with an irritated tone, showing just how much planning he has been doing.
* ChekhovsGun: The manga is full of them (almost all are cut out in the first anime adaptation, but restored for the second anime) including [[spoiler: Kyo's beads]] but most noticeably the little red (blue in the 2019 anime) hat that Tohru owns. It is shown sitting in her tent on the very first page, hanging off the iconic picture of her mother. Turns out to be one of the most driving plot devices as [[spoiler: Tohru has a dream remembering her receiving the hat from a little boy when she was lost as a child and he led her home]] and in the second volume goes into full detail about the event. But while hinting at the significance of this story, what at first seems like it might only be [[BoyMeetsGirl a cute accidental meeting]] as we don't know [[spoiler: whether the mysterious boy is Yuki or Kyo at first]] and when we find it was [[spoiler: Yuki]] it is still unsure who the OfficialCouple will be, it actually turns out to weave into a whole JigsawPuzzlePlot between Kyo, Yuki and Tohru's DarkAndTroubledPast where [[spoiler: EveryoneIsRelated]] in ways that ultimately [[TwistEnding turn every character relationship]] [[NothingIsTheSameAnymore on their head]] and [[FridgeBrilliance clears up all their past actions towards each other]], in one [[TheReveal Reveal]] right after another. All because of a little hat.
* ChekhovsGunman: Two of them -- Kakeru and Machi pass Tohru and Yuki at the end of volume 7 ([[LastEpisodeNewCharacter episode 25 in the 2019 anime]]), and we are properly introduced to them two volumes later.
* ChildhoodMarriagePromise: Kagura claims that Kyo made a promise to marry her when they were little, but it's only because she forced him to agree to it by threatening him with a knife (or a large rock in the 2001 anime).
* ChildrenDoTheHousework:
** Tohru Honda was raised by her young and widowed mother Kyoko. Since Kyoko needed to work all day to support them both, Tohru did the cooking, cleaning and laundry at their apartment. After Kyoko dies in a traffic accident, Tohru's experience at housekeeping is very useful when she moves in with the Sohmas since [[MenCantKeepHouse none of her male housemates are good at it]].
** Kyo learned how to cook because his adoptive father Kazuma is a LethalChef.
* TheClan: The Sohmas aren't simply a large family, but a clan consisting of 150 members. Despite sharing the same family name, it's implied that most of the cursed Sohmas are only distantly related to each other or not related at all, and only refer to each other as "cousins" or "relatives" out of kinship.
* ClingyJealousGirl: [[{{Yandere}} Kagura Sohma]] ''is'' a genuinely nice girl, but around Kyo she tends to switch into berserker mode, leaving the object of her 'affection' a crumpled heap on the ground before she knows it. ("My love! Who did this to you??") Kyo is rightly terrified when she first appears.
** The Prince Yuki Fan Club is the definition of this trope [[spoiler:although their leader, Motoko, later realizes she's being selfish about what Yuki wants after an attempt to confront Hanajima backfires and Hana questions them about being too pushy and forceful towards Yuki. She then speaks to Yuki and gets over him]].
** [[spoiler:Akito]] is an enormous one. She has her reasons and eventually gets over it. Her mother is even worse.
* ColorFailure: Usually Kyo after Kagura visits.
* CompressedAdaptation: The third and final season of the second anime series adapts the last seven volumes of the manga into only thirteen episodes. As a result, many scenes from the manga were shortened or removed entirely.
* CoveredInMud: At one point, Tohru's uniform is dirty from the mudslide that fell on her tent. Once she gets cleaned up, [[{{Jerkass}} one of Yuki's fan club]], jealous that Tohru arrived at school with Yuki, says "That mud looked so good on you".
* CrashInThroughTheCeiling: Kyo first appears by crashing through the ceiling of the Sohma house, eager to fight Yuki.
* CrossPoppingVeins:
** Characters will usually sport these when they're angry during comedic moments, but [[HairTriggerTemper Kyo]] gets them the most.
** Parodied in the 2001 anime; after Kagura causes a big mess at Shigure's house, Kyo yells at Shigure for being too easy going about the incident. Shigure promptly reaches down and sticks a large, red set of veins to his head, declaring "Now I'm mad," and removing them a moment later.
* CurseEscapeClause: The only way to break the curse is [[spoiler: if one who is under the curse but not a part of the family is truly loved]]. Originally, it was supposed to make it inescapable since the Cat wasn't cast out until later.
* CursedWithAwesome: Subverted. Sure, on paper having the ability to transform into an animal sounds like it would be pretty fun and/or cool for some people, but it's eventually made clear that the Sohma family curse really ''is'' a curse with far more cons than pros. It's stated very early on that the Sohmas don't get any particularly cool powers and abilities regarding their given animals; they have some form of non-verbal communication with their animals (such as when Shigure intuits that a cliffside has collapsed when he hears a dog howling), and when transformed they can only do whatever comes naturally to their respective animal (which may be cool for animals like the Rooster, but not so much for animals like the Sheep). In addition, those who are cursed [[InvoluntaryShapeshifting can't control their transformations]] and there's also the issue of how the people around them who know about the curse will react, especially their parents, who would have to deal with the shock of their child turning into an animal shortly after they're born. As a result, most members of the Zodiac have to deal with their parents being either abusive, neglectful (or full on disowning them), or even going to the opposite extreme and becoming ''extremely'' overprotective. Worst of all, [[spoiler:as members of the Zodiac, they're all bound to be subservient to the one who's possessed by the spirit of the "God" that brought all the animals together, no matter how much said God abuses them]].
* TheCutie: Applicable to most of the main cast, but a special shoutout has to go to Tohru Honda, Momiji Sohma, and Kisa Sohma.
* DarkerAndEdgier: The 2019 anime compared to the 2001 anime, as several scenes are played in a darker light. Justified, since the 2019 anime sticks much closer to the original manga's darker tone.
* DenouementEpisode: The final episode of the first anime is largely this. The final manga chapter is similar.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Seriously, Momiji? You hug Tohru, knowing full well what it does to you, at her school where a lot of people can see you? Granted, they were behind a curtain, but the cloud of smoke that often appears during the transformation still caught spectator attention.
* DistantFinale: [[spoiler:The final few pages of the manga skips some 50 or 60 years ahead in time to show Tohru and Kyo's children and grandchildren, before showing an elderly Tohru and Kyo themselves from behind.]]
* DomesticAbuse: Invoked in a flashback. Tohru's mother Kyoko comes from an abusive household where her parents heavily neglected her [[spoiler: and kicked her out of home right before her then-counselor and later-husband Katsuya came to ask them for marriage approval]], so once she finds out she's carrying a baby, she has a HeroicBSOD due to being terrified that her relationship with Tohru would go the way of hers with her own mother.
* DontTryThisAtHome: After tripping Kyo (who was running at breakneck speed), Hatsuharu then [[BreakingTheFourthWall breaks the fourth wall]] to say that doing this could cause serious injury to anyone besides Kyo. This prompts Kyo to yell back "Don't try it here, either! And who the hell are you talking to anyways?!"
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale:
** Machi is [[{{Tsundere}} incredibly aggressive when she gets embarrassed]] (and [[ShrinkingViolet she's shy]] so she gets easily embarrassed) and her half-brother Kakeru gets it the worst. Once when Kakeru gave her a embarrassing and rather forward compliment she punched him in the face through a bag of meat and Yuki looked onward calmly stating he told Kakeru he'd be hit if he said that. Even his girlfriend was more concerned with the meat than Manabe, but she kinda has an obsession...
*** Manabe even lampshades it at one point, when he comments "I'm risking my life playing the stooge here." It was said in regards to Yuki, but he seems to have the same goal for Machi (getting them both out of their shells).
** Kagura beating the tar out of Kyo nearly every scene they're in together is entirely PlayedForLaughs, since Kyo knows martial arts and should be tough enough to endure Kagura's violence. The ''only'' time Kagura is ever scolded for hitting someone is in the case of Tohru, another girl, who ends up knocked out on the floor after receiving a single slap from Kagura in the manga.
** To a slightly lesser extent, Uotani towards Kyo as well. She picks fights with him whenever she feels like when he's otherwise not bothering her at all. Kyo explicitly states after having his chair kicked by her because "it's easy to kick" that he doesn't retaliate ''because'' she's a woman.
** Subverted in [[spoiler:Akito's]] case; they're a DomesticAbuser played completely straight, and the damage they cause is taken seriously at all times.
* DueToTheDead: Many characters assist in proper respects to Tohru's dead mother.
* DysfunctionJunction: '''''Everyone''''' has a [[DarkAndTroubledPast tragic past]], screwed up family history, and/or other significant psychological issues. Parents in general tend to be abusive, neglectful, ashamed of their children's forms, or dead. Some characters slip into states of violent psychosis when excited or annoyed.
** On a lighter note, the rampant [[WholesomeCrossdresser cross-dressing]] in the Sohma family seems almost normal by comparison to the myriad accounts of abuse and neglect.
** In the manga, a brief look into Kimi Todo's backstory shows her getting teased in middle school, with the girls wondering aloud why she doesn't just go hang out with the boys and get by on her looks. And then Kimi subverts your expectations hilariously by just going with it.
* EarlyBirdCameo:
** Inverted -- Motoko's appearances in the first chapter of the manga and the culture festival are removed from the first anime, so she doesn't appear there until episode 18.
** The 2019 anim's first ending credits play it straight with Kisa and Hiro, who have two scenes there long before either appear in the series.
** Mayuko has at least two early appearances in the 2019 anime before her proper introduction in episode 10. In episode 4, she tells Tohru about her grandfather's call. Then in episode 7 she passes by discussing Kana's upcoming marriage with her.
** Doubling as a FreezeFrameBonus, you can barely make out Kureno next to Akito at the end of episode 7 of the 2019 anime.
** A shot of Hana's family in episode 8 includes Megumi, but he's seen from the back.
** Ritsu's monkey form appears as part of the EvolvingCredits in episode 9.
** Mine appears in the second opening. Her face is hidden by her umbrella but her maid uniform is a dead giveaway.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness:
** During the sleepover chapter, Hanajima is seen wearing a white nightgown, despite it later being established that she only wears black outside of school. Both animes change it to black in the equivalent episode.
** Akito was implied to be a bit of a {{Troll}}, which is seen when Hatori tricks Yuki and Kyo into taking a photo together under Akito's orders just for kicks. Later appearances show Akito as a much more serious and [[TroubledAbuser troubled]] character with no humorous quirks.
* EarnYourHappyEnding: For all the love and friendship this series has, there's also a ''lot'' of pain.
* EasternZodiac: There is a character for each animal in the zodiac, plus a cat and the 'god' who arranged the legendary banquet. "God" doesn't get a transformation, however, it does have the power to manipulate the other spirits at will, forcing them to do anything it asks. They also love it unconditionally and can never blame it for anything. Unfortunately for the owner of the dragon spirit, a little wordplay means that instead of turning into an actual ''dragon'' (which would be ''[[CursedWithAwesome badass]]''), he turns into a 竜の落し子 ([[SeahorsesAreDragons "tatsu no otoshigo"; "baby dragon"), or "seahorse"]]. [[spoiler:However, Shigure in the manga says that the curse is falling apart and even the animal forms are half-baked forms of what they used to be, and he actually says: "Look at Hatori, for example."]]. While the traditional legend says there was one banquet and that the rat tricked the cat into missing it, the end of the manga reveals what ''really'' happened: [[spoiler:the animals partied with the god all the time, but when they started approaching death, the god came up with a drink of reincarnation and gave some to the unconscious and dying cat. The cat woke up after drinking it and gave a WhoWantsToLiveForever speech that pissed everyone else off. DramaticallyMissingThePoint, they felt betrayed by the cat, drank the elixir, and died at some later point.]]
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Yuki Sohma. Hell, even his ''teacher'' wants him.
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: By about the two-thirds mark, practically everyone who has any perception at all (including classmates who barely know their names) can see that [[spoiler: Kyo and Tohru]] are in love with each other...[[TwiceShy except for the two of them]], of course.
* EveryoneIsRelated: Half the cast is actually distantly biologically related to each other (the Sohma family is [[TheClan HUGE]]).
* EveryOneMustBePaired: By the end of the series, most of the two dozen or so characters have [[EarnYourHappyEnding finally found their happiness]] with a love interest.
* EvilMatriarch: [[spoiler:Ren Sohma]], in '''spades''' - it can even be argued that she's the true BigBad, as it's due to her that [[spoiler: Akito is forced to live as a man, so that Ren could be the only woman Akira loved, and her influence directly caused the young - and comparatively much more levelheaded - Akito to become the abusive person we know today.]]
* EvolvingCredits:
** In episode 7 of the 2019 anime, the ending switches the scene of Kisa and Hiro's Zodiac forms with one of Hatori's seahorse form swimming around.
** The scene changes again in episode 9 to Haru and Ritsu's forms.
** The last shot of the 2019 anime's first ending changes from the windy field to a closeup of Yuki and Tohru's hands starting in episode 10.
** In Episode 13 of the 2019 anime's second season, the opening includes Kureno in the same shot as Rin, with his animal form [[TheMirrorShowsYourTrueSelf being reflected on the screen of his phone]].
** The fifth ending opens with a shot of Tohru's framed photo of Kyoko, along with her zodiac animal figurines and the baseball cap she's held onto. In episode 6 of season 3, the frame is cracked from Tohru [[DramaticDrop dropping it in shock]] [[spoiler:after Kyo reveals that the baseball cap was his]]. In episode 11, after [[spoiler:the remainder of the Zodiac are released from their curse, Kyo's additonal one included]], the frame is fixed, and next to it is [[spoiler:Kyo's beads in a small bowl]]. The final episode replaces Kyoko's photo with [[spoiler:a photo of a younger Tohru with both her parents]], and next to it are [[spoiler:several photos of Tohru and Kyo, showing them in high school, during their wedding, and their children]].
* TheFaceless: Used in the manga and anime to dramatic effect: if you don't see the face of the character in full, they are either TheDreaded as in the case of Akito [[spoiler:or Ren]], or the most morally reprehensible characters of the entire series--notable examples of the latter are Rin's parents, who are the only parents established to have been emotionally, psychologically, ''and'' physically abusive to their child before full on abandoning her.
* FeelingYourHeartbeat: In a flashback to their childhoods, Shigure places Akito’s hand on his chest as he reassures her of his love for her.
* TheFirstCutIsTheDeepest: Kana to Hatori. After they broke up due to Hatori wiping Kana's memories so her mental health would improve, he's reluctant to pursue a relationship again because of the Zodiac curse and how Akito would react if he ever dated someone.
* FlowersOfRomance: In the second episode of the third season, the three main couple (Tohru and Kyo, Yuki and Machi, [[spoiler:Shigure and Akito]]) have an scene where one half of the couple gives the other a paper flower. [[spoiler:Shigure does it to intentionally remind Akito of the time when he gave her a flower as he confessed his love to her back when they were younger.]]
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** In the first chapter, Shigure tells Tohru that the hillsides are weak. Not only does this result in the landslide that buries her tent, but [[spoiler:in chapter 121, when Tohru is trying to befriend Akito, the cliff crumbles underneath her and she falls]].
** In chapter 19, the female student council assistants imagine Momiji in the male uniform after a [[IGotBigger growth spurt]], accurately.
** When Kyo first transfers, Uo comments that his hair reminds her of Tohru's mother. [[spoiler:Turns out there's OneDegreeOfSeparation, as Kyo and Kyoko knew each other.]]
** When Tohru and the others visit Kyoko's grave, Kyo is visibly nervous during the visit and at one point asks Hanajima if she could see spirits, [[spoiler: hinting that they not only knew each other, but Kyo blaming himself for Kyoko's death]]. This becomes even more overt when [[spoiler: Hanajima point blank tells Kyo that his waves are in total disarray, and asks why he is filled with such regret and guilt.]]
** After Yuki's collapse due to a respiratory attack in Haru's introduction, despite being reassured Yuki will be all right, Tohru insists on staying to watch over him due to how a cold shouldn't be taken lightly. Stating how her mother would agree, it's later learned [[spoiler: that Tohru's father's death was due to a cold that quickly developed into pneumonia]].
** When Tohru suggests to Rin that they ask Kureno for help with breaking the Sohma curse, Rin immediately dismisses the idea, saying that Kureno isn't one of them despite the fact that he's the Rooster. [[spoiler:This is because Kureno has actually been free of the curse for at least ten years, and despite keeping this a secret, the other Zodiac members still subconsciously feel as though he's no longer one of them.]]
* ForgottenFirstMeeting: Tohru met [[spoiler:Yuki, aka the boy who gave her the hat]] when they were younger. He remembers that first meeting, but thinks that Tohru doesn't (in actuality, she does; she just doesn't recognize him, as she doesn't remember his face). Ironically, Tohru suggests that perhaps the boy himself doesn't remember when telling the story, as it was "probably just another day" for him.
* FracturedFairyTale: When the main characters' homeroom class realizes how woefully miscast everyone is in their SchoolPlay of "Literature/{{Cinderella}}", they rewrite it into "Sorta Cinderella" and invert a great deal of it. It manages to be a SugarWiki/{{Funny Moment|s}} and very (unintentionally) touching at the same time.
* FreezeFrameBonus: In one episode of the 2019 anime, during a scene where Yuki and Kyo respond to Shigure with CrossPoppingVeins, pausing the scene frame-by-frame shows that their respective animal forms [[https://filliteapot.tumblr.com/post/186242287679/i-noticed-something-beautiful actually morph into the veins]].
* FootFocus: Most characters don't wear socks and they walk barefeet in houses for most of the time.
* FromRoommatesToRomance: Tohru becomes housemates with cousins Kyo and Yuki (and their older cousin and guardian Shigure), eventually becoming the center of a love triangle between the two young men.
* GangOfBullies: Motoko Minagawa leads a small group of girls who routinely make life a little more difficult for the main character.
* GenderBlenderName:
** "Tohru" is usually a boy's name, which is commented on quite frequently. Her father chose the name because he wanted it to emphasize her femininity, which in his words is "like adding salt to something sweet to enhance the flavor". Natsuki Takaya has stated that she likes to give female characters masculine names to "balance them out".
** There's also [[spoiler:Akito Sohma]], who is a girl but was given a boy's name [[spoiler:and even raised as one]].
** Some of the male cursed Sohmas have names that are usually given to girls, though this is largely coincidental since the cursed Sohmas' names are taken from [[TemporalThemeNaming the traditional names for the months in the Japanese calendar]]. Several other characters outside of the Sohma family also have gender-blender names, such as Saki's younger brother Megumi.
* GenderFlip:
** [[spoiler:An unintentional example happens with Akito in the first anime with some of its exclusive scenes. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] since the first adaptation was made when the manga hadn't revealed her true gender yet, so it was an easy assumption at the time.]]
** In the 2019 anime, the Foolish Traveler from Momiji's story is changed from a boy to a girl, likely to ramp up the parallels between the Traveler and Tohru.
* GodivaHair: When CensorSteam just isn't enough, Rin gets this due to her long hair.
* GoodParents: In this series, a parent can get a pass simply by not being a nihilistic asshole, but there's actually a few shining examples of goodness:
** Tohru's mother was almost obsessively doting, but she was still a loving parent and her wisdom is what guides Tohru and allows her to help others.
** Hiro's mother totally accepts him being a sheep and goes out of her way to shower him with love and affection, which makes his brattiness somewhat glaring.
** Saki has a loving family who tries their best to emotionally support her, especially when she was bullied during elementary and middle school.
** Shigure's parents are briefly shown, and he seems to have a slightly disinterested but relatively stable relationship with them (as he does with most people) - he chats with them at a party in Volume 17 without too much fuss.
** Kisa's mother has her own issues to deal with, but she's still ultimately a better mother than most parents of cursed Sohmas. When we first meet her, it seems Kisa's mother has fallen into the trap of being an overprotective Sohma parent, and is at the end of her rope. But some time apart does the both of them good--When Kisa decides to stay at Shigure's house for a few days to be with Tohru, her mother calls everyday to make sure she's eating properly and to tell Tohru what her favorite food is--worrying, but not smothering.
** Ritsu's mother, though asphyxiatingly overprotective of him, does genuinely care about him and even [[LargeHam very dramatically]] tells Tohru (before the latter even meets him) that he's "a good boy" despite all his...[[ApologizesALot quirks]].
** According to the author notes, Kagura and her mother are very close, although this isn't really shown in the series proper. The 2019 anime shows their closeness a bit more by including the mother in more scenes at Kagura's house.
* GraduateFromTheStory: The story ends after Tohru, Yuki, Kyo and their friends have graduated from high school and are preparing to go their separate ways, though there's also a DistantFinale that shows [[spoiler:Tohru and Kyo in their old age, still as in love as ever]].
* GreenEyedMonster: Yuki's fangirls toward Tohru. And anyone else who so much as looks at Yuki.
** [[spoiler:Shigure]] towards Akito. It's the reason why [[spoiler:he slept with her mother. And manipulated everyone around him for years on end]]. Very much edges towards [[IfICantHaveYou If I Can't Have You I'm Going To Destroy You And Make You Completely Emotionally Inaccessible For Anyone Else Ever]].
** Tohru finds out that one of the reasons for the friction between [[spoiler:Kyo and Yuki]] is mutual jealousy.
* GroupieBrigade: Despite not being a really "famous" person," Yuki is regularly stalked by a vast brigade of obsessive fangirls.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:H-M]]
* HardTruthAesop: Yuki’s monologue from the end of Kisa’s introduction chapter can be summed up as "Encouraging people to love themselves is useless. A person who doesn’t love themselves can’t just invent that love from nothing, and what they really need is love from others". This isn't actually ''wrong'', but it does fly in the face of Aesops about learning to love yourself that are prominent in western cultures, especially in the U.S.
* HaremNanny: Shigure Sohma, who owns the house where Tohru, Yuki and Kyo live.
* HateSink: Tohru's paternal relatives minus her grandfather, especially her aunt and two cousins. During the short time Tohru was living with them and her grandpa, the aunt and her kids treated Tohru like an unwanted guest at best, and a humiliating burden at worst.
** The aunt had a private detective follow Tohru out of fear she was as much a delinquent as Kyoko used to be and didn't want "A relative with a criminal record" to spoil her son's future career as a police officer. She then issues a veiled threat of kicking Tohru out ([[EntitledBastard Of her father's house, which she should be lucky to stay in with her kids]]) if she's ever so "Reckless" in the future. It's not even mentioned how long the detective had been trailing Tohru, [[FridgeHorror one must wonder if the aunt knew Tohru was originally living in a tent and just didn't care.]]
** The male cousin smugly mocks Tohru and tries to [[SlutShaming shame her]] by asking if she fooled around with the Sohmas. In fact, in the dub of the original anime he blatantly calls her a little tramp.
** The female cousin's the least offensive, but is still openly rude to Tohru by [[SpoiledBrat whining about having to share a room with her]] and expresses a backhanded compliment about Tohru having supposedly "shacked up" with a bunch of guys.
** The rest of the Hondas are implied to be just as bad, if not worse, considering how horribly they treated Tohru during Katsuya's funeral. One has to wonder how in the hell Katsuya turned out the way he did when his family was made up of such loathsome people.
* HeadbuttOfLove: Tohru and Kyo share a loving headbutt [[spoiler:in front of Kyoko's grave when they decide to live together at the countryside after graduation]].
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:Akito, towards the end of the manga. When Tohru is hospitalized after falling from a cliff, Akito is among the first to visit her, at which point she finally accepts Tohru's offer of friendship.]]
* HereditaryCurse: A curse that changes thirteen members of the family into animals of the EasternZodiac (plus the Cat) when they are hugged by someone of the opposite sex that is not also cursed or when their bodies are weak. The curse has been part of the Sohma family for generations, with new Zodiac members being born after those who are possessed die. While turning into animals [[CursedWithAwesome may not seem like much of a curse]], it turns out that the ''real'' curse is how [[spoiler:all of the Zodiac members feel compelled to obey the individual who represents the "God" of the Zodiac, even if the God abuses them, and how the "bond" the cursed members all share is actually toxic and stifling since they can't freely form relationships with other people outside the family]].
* HeterosexualLifePartners: The Mabudachi Trio (Shigure, Ayame, and Hatori).
* {{Homage}}: The plot is rather reminiscent of "Literature/BeautyAndTheBeast", culminating with the implication that [[spoiler:the curse is broken when the person possessed by the Cat spirit (who has a "monster"-form) falls in love with someone who loves him back.]]
* HotSpringsEpisode: Kyo, Tohru, Momiji and Yuki visit the hot springs resort owned by the Sohma family. Not as much fanservice for guys, but (considering the cast of {{bishonen}}) a fair amount for the female audience.
* IBangedYourMom: [[spoiler:Shigure had sex with Ren, Akito's mom, in retaliation for Akito sleeping with Kureno. Also because Ren is basically the image of Akito might have been had Ren not demanded Akito be raised as a boy.]] ''Not'' PlayedForLaughs, [[spoiler: and this is apparently the reason why Akito exiled Shigure from the main Sohma estate.]]
* IdiosyncraticEpisodeNaming: In the 2019 anime, each episode's title refers to [[TitleDrop a line that one of the characters will speak during that episode]].
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy:
** This is how Hatori feels in regards to Kana after he's forced to wipe her memory, telling God that he'll be frozen and heartbroken for the rest of his life if it means that she'll be happy.
** In the manga, [[spoiler:Motoko]] eventually says this to Yuki.
** This ultimately is how Tohru's friends feel about [[spoiler:Kyo]] dating and "taking" Tohru from them - they don't mind, as long as he makes her happy.
* IKnowYourTrueName: Megumi Hanajima, Hana's little brother, claims to be able to curse a person if he knows his name. Every member of Yuki's fanclub accidentally reveals her name to him, to their horror, except one. ("Nice to meet you, Number Two-san.")
* InconsistentSpelling: The main family name for the cursed Zodiac members is spelled "Sohma" in the first anime and both translations of the manga, and "Soma" in the 2019 anime.
* InstantBandages: Kyo gets these after being tripped.
* InstantFanClub: Yuki has a very determined fan club (which is comprised of most of the school's female population) that is implied to have sprung up the moment he started going to high school, as it's established that the protagonists are only in their first year at the beginning of the story. One episode is centered on their possessive, inconsiderate attitude. [[spoiler:Though later on, club president Motoko Minagawa actually [[CharacterDevelopment gets over her obsession with Yuki]].]]
* InvoluntaryShapeshifting: Members of the Zodiac transform when feeling weak or hugged by the opposite sex.
* IronicEchoCut: During the sleepover in the manga and 2019 series, Yuki claims Tohru is one "that deserves the moon, but would never ask you for it". A cut to Akito would show that they ''are'' one who ask for the moon.
* JapaneseDelinquents: Uotani and Kyoko were both sukeban when they were in middle school, though they would both eventually quit their gangs and change for the better. Even now, Uotani still wears a long skirt with her uniform to show her sukeban roots.
* KarmaHoudini: Multiple characters, and ItMakesSenseInContext. Two of the main themes in the series are forgiveness and second chances, after all.
** [[spoiler:Akito]] -- however, this particular culprit ''does'' show remorse for what [[spoiler:she]] pulled on everyone, even realizing with horror that there's simply '''no''' way to obtain forgiveness from the most abused members of the cast. That, and [[spoiler: she]] has now the knowledge and strength of self to break off [[spoiler: the cycle of abuse that was started by Ren...]]
** Ren really doesn't get punished for all of the emotional abuse and trickery she racks up over the course of the manga. Although she still doesn't end up '''too''' well, given that [[spoiler:Akito is able to move past her manipulations and thus can't be tormented by Ren anymore, leaving Ren just a slightly crazy woman who is ignored and/or disliked by the Zodiac, a lot of the servants, and the family at large.]] However, considering how a good part of Ren's motivation is her desire to completely ruin Akito, [[spoiler:[[FateWorseThanDeath this might actually be the best punishment for her]]. Now Akito is free and somewhat redeemed, and she will be more or less happy from now on -- while Ren will ''always'' be there to see this and will ''never'' get over herself. This might as well overlap with CruelMercy as well, as the Sohma's head maid mentioned that it's a much better choice for Akito to cast Ren into exile than to let her stay inside the Sohma household. But it still stands that Ren will only stew in her resentment for the rest of her life while Akito found a chance in happiness]].
** The [[ParentalNeglect neglectful]] or actively AbusiveParents or get away relatively unscathed. Rin's AbusiveParents? [[spoiler: Well, Hatsuharu called them out, and Rin went to live with Kagura, but no action is actually taken against them.]] Momiji's mother and father? [[spoiler: He's called out by his son for his neglect but that's it; while she retains the "perfect life" that her husband created for her at Momiji's expense -- even his violin lessons were stopped when his little sister decided she wanted to play.]] Perhaps the latter's mental fragility gets her off the hook, but considering what her son went through...
** Tohru's massively {{Jerkass}} relatives, minus her paternal grandfather. They treated her like crap before the story began, treated her like crap when the readers/viewers see them momentarily, and then Tohru leaves for good and we never learn if they repent, regret or get any kind of consequences. The most punishment any of them get is the male cousin getting a slap and a scolding from Tohru's grandfather and [[BewareTheNiceOnes some vague threats from Yuki]].
* KickTheDog: One of Akito's hobbies.
** Ren is also quite fond of it. Really, that's almost certainly where Akito picked it up from.
** In the backstory, Kakeru Manabe had the gall to tell Tohru to her face, ''right in the middle of her mother's funeral'', that she wasn't the only one who lost a parent (the father of his girlfriend, Komaki Nakao, was the driver who hit Kyoko, and he also died in the accident), and she was [[QuitYourWhining being whiny and disgusting for openly grieving]]. Unlike most examples of this trope, [[LaserGuidedKarma karma catches up to him]] immediately: [[WomenAreWiser Komaki]] is rightfully furious at him for saying that supposedly "for her sake", calls him out on his bullshit, and nearly breaks up with him.
* KindheartedSimpleton: A story Momiji says he heard in class about a man who always helped anyone who asked anything of him. Eventually the poor guy looses even the clothes on his back and then willingly allows himself to be eaten by goblins.
** It's made a little bit better if you read the full story separately. There at least the head goblin feels some guilt over hurting such a giving man. He goes to the villagers who originally took advantage of the man and gives them such a [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech Reasons You Suck Speech]]. You can almost feel the intense guilt and shame being heaped on those bastards.
* KissingCousins: Downplayed. While the Sohmas sometimes refer to each other as "cousins" or "relatives" and some of them have romantic feelings for each other, it's often implied that they're only very distantly related or not related at all. The Sohmas are in fact a [[TheClan clan]] consisting of about 150 people, not simply a large family. As such, the current generation of cursed Sohmas likely only refer to each other as "cousins" out of kinship and formality.
* TheKlutz: Tohru Honda.
** By virtue of not knowing much about life "outside" [[spoiler:the Sohma house, Kureno. Seriously. Dude doesn't even know how to use a convenience store basket]].
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: It's literally Hatori's power, and it's how the secret of the Sohma family has been kept since ages before the start of the manga.
* LastDisrespects:
** When Katsuya Honda passes away, his relatives' conversations during the funeral ceremony quickly devolve from the circumstances surrounding his death to expressing their disapproval of Kyoko by berating or gossiping about her, saying that Katsuya was better off single. In a separate recollection of the same funeral, Tohru's grandfather brings up how the relatives would say disparaging remarks toward Tohru right in her face, thinking she would not understand because she's only a young child.
*** Presumably, the only people that mourned Kyoko's death were Tohru, Uotani, Hanajima, and Tohru's paternal grandfather and going by Tohru's relatives' attitudes during the brief time Tohru came back to live with them, the people that may have come to Kyoko's funeral besides the aforementioned latter three probably didn't have very appropriate words either.
*** [[spoiler:Kakeru]] didn't so much accompany his girlfriend to Kyoko's funeral to offer condolences as much as berate Tohru for '''feeling sad about her mother's death'''.
** Kyo's biological father chooses his mother's funeral ceremony to argue with Kyo, using the latter's inability to approach his mother's grave in front of the family as an excuse to make a scene.
** Tohru's paternal grandfather [[DiscussedTrope talks about]] the stupidity of this trope, especially when children are involved.
* LastEpisodeNewCharacter: Rin, Kakeru, and Machi all make their first appearances in the 2019 anime's first season finale.
* LethalChef: Kazuma and Yuki Sohma, the former due to inattentiveness and the latter due to... an extreme lack of talent.
* LetsHaveAnotherBaby: Tohru's parents in their {{Backstory}}. They were never able to.
* LighterAndSofter: The 2001 anime is this in comparison to the manga and 2019 anime, putting more emphasis on comedic moments and downplaying some of the story and characters' darker elements (like making Tohru into more of ThePollyanna rather than a StepfordSmiler, and removing Shigure's manipulative side while turning him into AdaptationalComicRelief). It doesn't help that it only adapts about a third of the manga's story, and thus it never delves into the ''really'' dark stuff [[CerebusSyndrome that becomes more evident as the manga goes on]].
* LongingLook: Plenty, especially between [[spoiler:Tohru and Kyo late in the series; Tohru at Kyo because she's dreading the day when Kyo will be locked away, but doesn't have the courage to pursue her feelings for him because of her conflicting feelings towards her mother, and Kyo because he knows he doesn't have much time left before the Sohmas imprison him, and his guilt over Tohru's mother's death]].
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: Ayame in spades.
* LoveTriangle: A very downplayed case occurs between Kyo, Tohru, and Yuki in that while Kyo and Yuki do have ShipTease moments with Tohru and do have feelings for her, they ultimately want her to be happy with whomever she chooses and don't actively pursue a relationship with her. [[spoiler: Yuki eventually realizes that he actually saw Tohru as more of a maternal figure than a romantic partner, and though he dislikes Kyo, he fully supports his relationship with Tohru when it's clear that the two love each other, making this trope more of an subversion.]]
** Meanwhile, the guy who ''does'' have confirmed romantic feelings for Tohru, [[spoiler:Momiji]], already knows that he's lost and likewise [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy encourages Tohru's relationship]] with [[spoiler:Kyo]].
* MagicPants: Totally averted. Retrieving clothes is the first priority of any of the family members after they turn back human.
* MamasBabyPapasMaybe: During Katsuya's aforementioned funeral, Tohru's relatives openly speculate if Tohru was born from an affair. Their "evidence" was that Tohru didn't physically resemble Katsuya, and that Kyoko was a FormerTeenRebel.
* MediumBlending: The 2019 anime's fifth opening depicts the traditionally animated characters over photographs of real life scenery.
* MenCantKeepHouse: At the beginning of the series, Shigure's kitchen is a huge mess and he only orders takeout for himself and Yuki (and an omake shows that despite Yuki being seemingly perfect at school, he isn't any good at keeping house either). Shigure and Yuki let Tohru stay with them in exchange for cooking and cleaning.
* MindRape: Kana, [[spoiler:thanks to Akito manipulating her after the incident with Hatori and driving her into madness]], and Yuki, [[spoiler:thanks to Akito's psychological abuse when they were kids]].
** Very ironically, [[spoiler:Akito is a ''victim'' of MindRape from much earlier: it came from her mother Ren, who after years of ''horrendous'' mental and emotional abuse, drove Akito to think that the Sohmas would abandon her forever for somebody else...who turned out to be Tohru, who also was able to save Akito from herself]].
** It's implied that Tohru herself went through this as a child, when her father died and she had to listen to her relatives talk about how Kyoko was a good-for-nothing bitch who didn't properly care for Katsuya and probably was having affairs, how Tohru was probably an illegitimate child, and how "a child like that is no consolation". Ouch.
** Flashbacks show that Ren was victim of this too; the implication being that the cycle of abuse in the Sohma clan has been going on for generations.
* MinorLivingAlone:
** Although she has friends she could stay with if she wasn't too polite to ask, [[AllLovingHero Tohru]] decides to try to live on her own after she's orphaned and her grandfather has renovations done on his house. In a tent. Fortunately, the Sohmas are persistent enough to get her to stay with them...although one could just as easily question the logic of moving in with three guys she barely knows.
** Around the time she's starting high school, [[EmotionlessGirl Machi]] is kicked out of the house after [[NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished a kind gesture is misconstrued as attempted murder]].
** [[OlderThanTheyLook Momiji]] was forced to leave his parents when he was about eight, and by the time the series begins, he has a house of his own on the Sohma estate. There would have been plenty of servants around, and Hatori seems to look after him when he has the time, but he's very independent by the time he enters high school.
* TheMirrorShowsYourTrueSelf: Done for stylistic effect in the 2019 anime's second season opening; there's a montage of the cursed Sohmas near bodies of water or windows (or in Momiji's case, a glass with liquid in it), with their reflections shown as their animal forms.
%%* MorningRoutine
* MultiGenderedOutfit: Momiji Sohma is InTouchWithHisFeminineSide and wears a girl's school uniform with shorts instead of a skirt. After he has a growth spurt and looks more masculine and handsome, he switches to the standard boy's uniform.
* MusicalNod: The first and last few notes of the 2019 anime's second season ending theme, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExfPfuxErog "Ad Meliora"]], are the same notes as the opening melody of the 2001 anime's opening theme, "For Fruits Basket".
* MutualEnvy: Both Yuki and Kyo envy each other's circumstances and personalities. Kyo wants to be acknowledged by the rest of the Sohma family and as part of the Zodiac, so he envies Yuki who, being the Rat, gets a privileged place over Kyo and even the other members of the zodiac. Yuki, on the other hand, has always been in a GildedCage, and due to turning into a rat if a girl hugs him, he maintains distance and doesn't have any real friends, nor does he know how to make them. He envies Kyo's more outgoing nature and ability to bond so easily with others.
* MythologyGag:
** The 2019 anime's opening opens with a shot of a falling cherry blossom petal like the first anime's opening, only now there are two of them.
** Tohru hums the first anime's ending theme in the 2019 anime's dub of episode 8 when she's washing the dishes.
** Shigure sings his infamous "High school girls" tune in the dub of episode 9.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:N-R]]
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye: Tohru always said goodbye to her mother, except for the ''one'' day her mother ended up dying in a car accident. This comes up again as a lesson about no second chances near the end of the manga. [[spoiler:In the manga, there's is a flashback with Kyoko saying the same thing about Tohru's father Katsuya.]]
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: [[spoiler:The point of Ren's bet with Akito to not erase Tohru's memories was to allow the Zodiac to gravitate towards a stranger and away from Akito (aka "God"), proving to Akito that the bond between the Zodiac and God was false and that no one truly loved her, thereby pushing her into the DespairEventHorizon. The end result was the breaking of the Zodiac curse, Akito pulling a HeelFaceTurn and Ren being left with nothing but her rage.]]
* NoNameGiven: The three middle school girls who want to be delinquents in order to emulate Uotani never say their names. The author briefly discusses this on an aside on the next volume, claiming that she never bothered to give them names because they were secondary characters, but that she would have loved giving them a bigger role, were she given the time to do so. The second anime avoids this; giving them the names Takemura, Ito, and Ishihara.
** None of Tohru's family members besides her parents are given names.
* NoSenseOfDirection: Hatsuharu Sohma; shortly after he's introduced, he reveals that he got lost in the city for ''three days'' just to get to the main characters' school.
* NoSenseOfHumor: Hatori Sohma. Comes with the territory of being TheStoic.
* NoSmoking: Characters are sometimes seen smoking in the manga and 2001 anime, particularly Shigure and Hatori (with Shigure typically doing it when he's showing his more manipulative side). In the 2019 anime, none of the characters are ever shown smoking.
* NotMeThisTime: When Ayame shows up at the vacation home, Shigure hastily has to assure a livid Yuki and Kyo that it wasn't one of his connivances.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: [[spoiler: Near the end of the series, Tohru sees that this is really the case between herself and Akito, with them both trying to hold onto permanent sentiments to keep them from fading away in their hearts. With Tohru, it was her relationship with her mother, and with Akito, it was the bond that linked her to all the zodiac members. It is this realization that gives Tohru the resolve to help Akito move on in the end.]]
* OddShapedPanel: Takaya is a fan of this - it arguably makes her work memorable.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Shigure, though it's more like "Obfuscating Goofiness" in his case; [[spoiler: he's a much more calculating, manipulative person than he appears to be on the surface, and he uses his silly demeanor to ply others for information and to get them to do what he wants.]]
* OfficialCouple: Given the too-huge-to-be-listed number of these (every major character is in one, and most minor characters as well), this is pretty much the TropeCodifier. It's easier to list the exceptions. The only characters who aren't part of some sort of relationship at the end are [[spoiler:Momiji, Kagura, Megumi Hanajima, and Kimi Toudou.]]
* OnSecondThought: When Momiji sends Kisa and him invitations to come to the vacation home, Hiro starts on a long rant about how of course they're not going and how annoying he thinks Momiji is. Then Kisa cuts in:
-->'''Kisa''': Hiro-chan, I...want to go.
-->'''Hiro''': ...Let's go.
* OneBookAuthor: The 2001 anime was drama actor Murasaki Wakaba's only major voice-over role.
* OneCastMemberPerCover: All of the manga volumes have a different character on the cover. The first fifteen volumes have Tohru and the Sohma members of the Zodiac. Volumes 16-23 feature normal humans who are either close friends or relatives of the main characters.
* OneDegreeOfSeparation: Beyond [[EveryoneIsRelated blood ties]], the characters all manage to have some sort of connection to each other. The friend Yuki makes at school, for example? [[spoiler:His girlfriend's father just happened to be the driver of the car that ran into Tohru's mother.]] Tohru's homeroom teacher? [[spoiler:She happens to be an old acquaintance of Shigure, Hatori and Ayame, by virtue of being Kana(Hatori's ex-fiance)'s best friend and is in love - and by the end of the series, most likely on her way to being an OfficialCouple - with Hatori.]] The most obvious example, however, is that [[spoiler:Tohru just happened to have met Yuki as a child, and Kyo just happened to know her mother]].
* OneGenderSchool: The high school that Tohru and the other main characters attend is co-ed, but it's shown that in the past, many of the zodiac members went to all-boys' or all-girls' schools. This is justified since their transformation is mainly triggered by being hugged by someone of the opposite sex, and going to a one-gender school would be an easy way to keep the Sohma curse a secret.
* OnlySaneMan: Hatori, but mostly with [[LargeHam Ayame]] [[FauxYay and]] [[ChivalrousPervert Shigure]].
--> '''Shigure:''' Yup, we were [[ThickerThanWater inseparable]]! So much so that they called us the Mabudachi Trio/[[DubNameChange Three Musketeers]].
--> '''Tohru:''' Really?
--> '''Kyo:''' More like the Three Idiots if you ask me.
--> '''Yuki:''' How did Hatori put up with you for so long?
* OtherworldlyTechnicolourHair: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. Most of the cursed Sohmas are marked with hair colors that are unnatural to Japanese people but natural to the Zodiac animals whose spirits they possess, which means they get [[MistakenForDyed accused of being hair-dying delinquents]] frequently in school. Haru is perhaps the most extreme, as his hair grows half-black, half-white (even, it's implied, in his private areas).
* OurDragonsAreDifferent: Rather than becoming a mythological creature, the "dragon" Hatori becomes a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leafy_seadragon sea dragon]].
* OurWerewolvesAreDifferent: While not called werebeasts, each member has a single and unique alternate animal form, brought about by being hugged by non-Zodiac members of opposite sex. The animals are a cat, rat, dog, tiger, rabbit, [[SeahorsesAreDragons dragon (seahorse),]] ox, snake, sheep, monkey, horse and rooster (sparrow).
** Also, the person possessed by [[spoiler:the cat will turn into a foul-smelling monster]] if their prayer-bead bracelet is removed.
* OverTheShoulderCarry: After Rin escapes the hospital once again and collapses on the street, Haru slings her over his shoulder to show her he's now a strong man who can carry her when she's weak.
* OverlyGenerousFool: After Yuki and Kyo get frustrated that Tohru used most of her earnings from her job to buy ingredients to make Valentine's Day chocolates instead of paying her deposit for the school trip, wishing she wouldn't be "an idiot", Momiji tells them a story he heard in class called "The Foolish Traveler", about a young man who keeps giving away his belongings to greedy passersby when they ask for help. The Traveler gives the clothes off his back, his money, and eventually his body parts until he is nothing left but a head. When a monster asks of his eyes and he obliges, the monster cruelly leaves him a slip of paper calling him a fool. Momiji, however, deconstructs this, arguing the traveler was not foolish but simply chose not to fret about loss or hardship and instead wanting to give and make others happy, whether they deserve it or not. The fault is on the passersby for not appreciating this. He does this to evoke a parallel to Tohru's kindness, so that Yuki and Kyo will show their appreciation instead of thinking her foolish.
* ThePatientHasLeftTheBuilding: Rin is taken to the hospital to be treated for malnourishment. She wakes up when no doctors are around to check on her and, having no idea what she's doing there or why [[spoiler:she was not imprisoned in the Cat's room as she promised,]] she promptly left and began wandering the streets in a dazed stupor.
* PimpedOutDress: When she and Yuki visit Ayame's shop, Tohru gets dolled up in one by Mine, causing Yuki to have a "Romantic [[HeroicBSOD BSOD]]".
** Not to mention the dress [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments Ayame had been wearing]] a few minutes before.
** Ayame's store tends to deal with these in general. The ones he provides for the girls in the cast of "Sorta Cinderella" are pretty nice as well, with Mine loving Hanajima's request for a "pure black" one.
* PleaseDontLeaveMe:
** Akito says this [[spoiler:after Kureno's curse breaks]].
** A variant is done when Tohru dreams that she is back in her old apartment, and it is the morning that her mother left and was hit by a car. While she dreams that she is stuck in her bed, she mentally screams for her mother to not leave or else she'll die.
* PluckyGirl: Tohru Honda and Kagura Sohma.
* PosthumousCharacter: Kyoko Honda died in a traffic accident shortly before the start of the series.
* ThePowerOfFriendship:
** Tohru's kindness, healing the hearts of the Zodiac members.
** Yuki's later friendship (such as it is) with Kakeru also helps him out a good bit.
* ThePowerOfLove: Ultimately, Tohru's love and acceptance of everyone is what allows everyone to move past their pain, and it's implied [[spoiler:her love for Kyo, the cat who was never accepted by the Sohma family, is what ultimately breaks the curse]].
** At the end of the manga, everyone begins to move on as new people with the curse no longer holding them back from loving anyone.
%%* PuppyLove: Hiro and Kisa Sohma.
* QuestionableCasting: In-universe obvious example. Playing "Literature/{{Cinderella}}" at the school festival? Fantastic idea! Tohru will be perfect in the role of... What do you mean, she was cast as the mean stepsister? PrinceCharming Kyo has no chance of rejecting the stepsister, in this case.
** And when the characters realize it, instead of switching a few actors, they completely warp the story so it fits the actors' personalities. At the end of the play, we have actually no idea what was part of the rewriting, what was the actors going OffTheRails.
* RaisedAsTheOppositeGender: [[spoiler:Akito]] in the manga.
* RealPlaceBackground: In the 2019 anime, many locations were inspired by the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Den-en-chofu Den-en-chōfu]] district of Ota Ward in Tokyo.
* RidiculouslyLonglivedFamilyName: The Sohma Clan dates back thousands of years, to the time of the creation of the Eastern Zodiac. Ever since the original "god" of the zodiac died, certain members of the Sohma family have been possessed by the spirits of the 12 zodiac animals, the cat, and the god (though they were not usually all alive at the same time until the generation alive during the series).
* RedOniBlueOni: Kyo and Yuki, respectively. Kyo is hot tempered, impulsive and foul mouthed, while Yuki is calm, polite and reserved. However, on the flip side, Kyo unintentionally finds it much easier to connect with people and make friends, while Yuki keeps his classmates at arms length and is idolised but not particularly liked for himself alone.
* RefreshinglyNormalLifeChoice:
** Kyoko Katsunuma in her youth was known as the infamous gang leader "The Crimson Butterfly". But after meeting the kind, understanding Katsuya Honda, she fell in love and quit the gang. She eventually married and started a family with Katsuya, before his tragic death forced her to become a devoted single parent to their only daughter Tohru.
** Discussed with Arisa Uotani, who was initially angry when she discovered who her delinquent hero grew up to be. But the Hondas win Uo over, and she realizes she too wants a more refreshingly normal life, which Kyoko helps her achieve by helping her quit the gang.
--->'''Uo:''' I'm just completely disappointed! That the Crimson Butterfly turned into a domestic, overly friendly, doting parent! I can't believe you've sunken this low!
--->'''Kyoko:''' ''(smiles)'' I just... relaxed a bit. That's all.
* {{Reincarnation}}: The agents of the curse, not the characters themselves.
* RemakeCameo: Kakeru's English voice actor is Creator/AaronDismuke, who voiced Hiro in the 2001 series.
* RescueHug: At one time, Tohru trips and falls down a slope, prompting both Yuki and Kyo to try to rescue her, accidentally hug her, and turn into animals.
* RewatchBonus: Many revelations about the characters and curse, such as [[spoiler:Akito being a woman, the curse having been breaking by itself for a while, and Kyo being there when Kyoko died]] makes re-reading the whole manga series that much more rich and layered, since these were all foreshadowed from the beginning.
* RousseauWasRight: [[spoiler:In the end, the only real "antagonist" of the series was the misunderstanding brought on by the curse and the closed nature of the Sohma family, and even the worst individuals are revealed to be scared and lonely inside. A good example is the rivalry between Yuki and Kyo: both actually hold the other in esteem, but their jealousy and perception of the "curse" prevents them from saying so until they have no choice.]]
* RunningGag: Various parts of Shigure's house are damaged frequently throughout the manga; Kyo's introduction into the narrative has him ''breaking through the roof'' to surprise Yuki (and Tohru).
[[/folder]]
[[folder:S-Z]]
* SailorFuku: The girls' uniform at Kaibara High School is a standard navy sailor fuku, though it has a detachable tie for the collar instead of the typical scarf.
* SchoolFestival: The story features two cultural festivals at Tohru's school; in her first year, her class runs a rice ball stand (with Yuki [[DraggedIntoDrag wearing a dress to attract customers]]), and in her second year her class puts on a SchoolPlay of ''Literature/{{Cinderella}}'' which ends up being [[FracturedFairyTale very different]] from the original story.
* SchoolIdol: Yuki, complete with an insane fan club.
* ShoutOut:
** Early on in the story, Tohru refers to the massive garbage pile in Shigure and Yuki's kitchen as "a [[Manga/NausicaaOfTheValleyOfTheWind Sea of Decay/Toxic Jungle]]". Shigure jokingly remarks that it's a good comparison.
** When Tohru is visited by her friends in the Sohma house, Hanajima sees Kyo and Yuki fighting and says they remind her of [[WesternAnimation/TomAndJerry a show where a cat and a mouse are always fighting]] (completely unaware as to how close a similarity she actually ''was'' making). In the manga, Uotani even namedrops Tom and Jerry when Hanajima says this.
** When the main characters visit the Sohma lake house with Hatori, Shigure muses out loud that this is the kind of setting where [[Franchise/FridayThe13th Jason]] would show up. When Kyo asks who "Jason" is, Shigure messes with him by telling him it's a new species of bear (which Kyo and Tohru are both gullible enough to believe right away), but Yuki later correctly points out that Jason is a character from a horror movie.
** In the manga, when Hatori tells Shigure and Ayame that he didn't want to go to Kana's wedding, Shigure jokes that he could have crashed the wedding to steal the bride away like in ''Film/TheGraduate''. In the 2019 anime he simply says Hatori could have done that "like a scene in a movie".
** In the "Sorta Cinderella" parody, the font used for the title of the play is clearly that of {{Creator/Disney}}.
** For the second cultural festival, it's mentioned that another class' production of ''[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mito_Komon Mito Komon]]'' [[GenderFlip changes two of the characters into women]] and has them beat up the bad guys. Uotani immediately compares it to ''Series/CharliesAngels'', with Hanajima namedropping ''[[Film/CharliesAngels2000 Full Throttle]]'' right after.
** In season 2 episode 13 of the 2019 anime, Haru is shown playing a ''VideoGame/MarioKart''-like game on what is clearly a Nintendo Switch Lite.
** After the class play, Momiji finishes off his deduction that Tohru wanted to send a copy of it to Kureno by saying a variation of [[Manga/CaseClosed "Only one truth prevails!"]].
* ShownTheirWork:
** Rats are extremely prone to respiratory problems, being a leading cause of death among those kept as pets. Yuki suffered from respiratory problems when he was younger, and he's the Rat of the Zodiac.
** Leeks and miso are very toxic to cats, explaining Kyo's distaste for them.
* ShowWithinAShow:
** ''Mogeta'', a popular children's manga and anime that the characters occasionally read or watch. From the snippets of it that are shown, it seems to be about [[ABoyAndHisX a boy and his]] CartoonCreature sidekick Mogeta who go around fighting various monsters and villains. Kisa is particularly fond of ''Mogeta'' and sometimes watches the anime with Hiro, though Tohru and Kagura have also shown to like the series (and while Yuki admits it's not for him, the problems its villains have are surprisingly complex for the demographic).
** During their second year, Tohru's homeroom class puts on a school play for the cultural festival called "Cinderella-ish", a [[FracturedFairyTale bizarre retelling]] of the [[Literature/{{Cinderella}} titular story]] that features Kyo as the Prince, Saki as Cinderella, Tohru as the not-so-wicked stepsister, and Yuki as the Fairy Godmother.
* SnowMeansLove: Yuki makes a promise to Machi that he'll take her to make footprints in the snow, making her wish for snow for the first time in her life. [[spoiler:In the sequel, Yuki and Machi are shown happily walking in the snow with their son.]]
* SocialServicesDoesNotExist: Tohru is living ''in a tent in the woods'' at the beginning of the series, and the Sohma kids have all been so abused/neglected that they're barely able to socialize at school. Justified in that Tohru always makes clear she does not want to be a burden to anyone, probably including any social service that would be responsible for her (not to mention she sees it as a [[ThePollyanna training for the harsh real life]]), so she apparently took care that Social Services never learned about her one-week-adventure with the tent. And the big messed up Sohma family are secluded and ''rich'' and stick to themselves, so Social Services could hardly step in.
** Not to mention, poor Tohru was ''loathed'' by her remaining family except for her grandfather, who can't do a lot about it since he's extremely old and sickly. When she has to live with them, her aunt and cousins treat her in a really horrifying manner. At that rate, it was ''for the best'' for her to not stay with them.
* SoundEffectBleep: Hana, in the first episode/chapter.
--> '''Hanajima''': I could [[AC:*beep!*]] her with electro-poison waves.
* SoundtrackDissonance: In season 2 episode 2 of the 2019 anime, a pleasant classical piece plays on a record in the background while Kyo's father rants to Kazuma about [[spoiler:how as the Cat, Kyo should be locked away for the rest of his life after he graduates high school, blaming his wife's suicide on [[ItIsDehumanizing that "thing"]].]]
* SoupIsMedicine: When Tohru gets sick from stressing herself out after failing one of her exams, Kyo cooks okayu (a thin rice porridge) for her as a sign that he's come to care for her quite a lot. Many non-Japanese fans mistook the okayu he makes for soup, to the point that "SOUP!" became a meme related to the Kyo/Tohru pairing and Natsuki Takaya wondered why people were calling okayu "soup".
* SpecificallyNumberedGroup: The cursed members of the Sohma clan are always 14, due to being possessed by the animal spirits of the Zodiac, plus the spirits of the Cat and the God of the legend. However, it's noted to be rare for all 14 of them to be alive at the same time.
* SpeechBubbles: Odd shapes and different fonts are used extensively, especially in the English edition.
* SpitTake: Shigure pulls one off in the manga when he learns that [[FelonyMisdemeanor Tohru is still stuck using her middle-school swimsuit]].
** He does it again (though right at the edge of the panel, so it's easy not to notice, and nobody calls him out on it like in the above example) when Ayame orders Tohru to immediately remove all her clothes in volume 8.
* SplitPersonality: Hatsuharu Sohma's "black" side.
* StayingWithFriends: What Tohru insists she's doing until people find out otherwise.
* TheStinger:
** Episode 16 of the 2019 series ends with one. The three delinquents who've been spying on Uo all day are working on their intimidation, and they decide to test their skills on the next person who passes by. Said person ends up being [[spoiler:Momiji]], who unintentionally manages to scare them off just by ''speaking German''.
** Episode 17 ends with one of the delinquents, now an avid admirer of [[spoiler:Uotani]], sporting a new jacket bearing her hero's name. Her friend is also a fan of her now, and she shows her appreciation by [[spoiler:wearing a wig identical to Uo's hair]].
** Episode 61 has one for the aftermath of the episode -- Kyo and Tohru telling Kazuma what just happened while meeting up with Haru and Rin, and [[spoiler:God giving the Zodiac a final thank you]].
* StockShoujoBullyingTactics: Kisa is the victim of a version of the ignore tactic. First everyone in her class ignores her, and then whenever she says something everyone starts to giggle. This turns her into an ElectiveMute.
* StrangeMindsThinkAlike: Ayame and Mine have no problem understanding each other. In another scene, Hatsuharu talks to Kakeru like he's giving away Yuki to be married. Kakeru jumps into the bit without missing a beat.
* StressVomit: Kyo throws up some BishieSparkle after a stressful conversation with his father. Rin is also shown to do so a couple of times due to her stress-induced ulcers.
* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: The process of healing heavy emotional and mental scars is gradual and can't be forced, even with an overwhelming positive influence.
** While this applies to a lot of the Sohmas after meeting Tohru, this is best exemplified with Yuki, who froze upon meeting two people heavily responsible for his issues after an extended period of time of not being around them (Akito, who appeared suddenly at his school when he decided not to attend the first New Year's Banquet and his mother, who attempted to bulldoze her way through her parent-teacher conference regarding Yuki's future). In both situations, despite having healed a bit from his experiences with Tohru, Yuki's unable to navigate his way through the mental fog that overcomes him when faced with his abuser right away. He finally gets a lot better at helping himself by the time of the second New Year's Banquet.
** Despite good intentions and overwhelming support Ayame has for Yuki ''now'', Ayame can't force Yuki to forgive him for all the years Ayame ignored Yuki.
** Rin is incredibly bitter to find out that [[spoiler:the curse breaking]] doesn't immediately relieve her of the feelings of abandonment and abuse that she suffered from her parents and Akito.
** Even though the final chapters of ''Fruits Basket'' end on a high note, with most of the Zodiac members [[spoiler: (sans Rin) choosing to forgive Akito for all of the abuse she had done to them, ''Another'' shows that her relationship with them is nearly nonexistent - the only character she remains in active contact with outside of her immediate family is Tohru, primarily due to the friendship between their children. Although this is somewhat Akito's decision due to her own guilt, it's clear that the years of emotional and physical torment she caused them have done irreparable damage to most of her relationships with the former Zodiac members.]]
* SurrogateSoliloquy: Tohru talking to a picture of her dead mother. [[DarkAndTroubledPast This has darker meaning to her psyche]], as Hiro unintentionally calls her out on.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: Hatori Sohma. Akito Sohma ''would'' count if [[spoiler: she wasn't a girl]].
* ThereAreNoTherapists: See DysfunctionJunction, above, and the lack of ''any'' comforting figures (parents included).
* ThereWasADoor:
** Some part of poor Shigure's house is nearly constantly being repaired. Causes of damage usually involve Kagura or Kyo, either kicking something or being kicked into something.
** Kagura appears to have a tendency to break her own house, given a scene where she punches a door and her mother comments "Kagura, that's the second time you've broken that door in as many months."
* TitleDrop: The title references a memory that Tohru had of a game she once played in Kindergarten called "Fruits Basket" (essentially Duck-Duck-Goose, only with fruit names). She was assigned the name of "onigiri/rice ball" and was never called on, leaving her to conclude that "there was no room for a rice ball in a fruits basket".
* TookALevelInKindness: When the series begins, Akito is a {{Yandere}} SpoiledBrat who abuses the Zodiac members in horrific ways to get them to stay with and love her. By the end, she has undergone a HeelFaceTurn who acknowledges that there's people who won't like her, becoming a much kinder person. Best shown [[spoiler:during her and Tohru's climactic confrontation: when Tohru falls off the cliff shortly after offering her friendship, rather than gloat or smirk, Akito breaks down in tears and ''screams'' for someone to help her.]]
* TrailersAlwaysSpoil: The trailer for the final season of the 2019 remake pretty much gives away Tohru's feelings for [[spoiler:Kyo and spoils some important lines and scenes between them]]. It also spoils that Yuki ends up [[spoiler:falling for Machi and that Shigure loves Akito]]. The final opening and end credits song for the final season goes even further as it shows Kyo's hands [[spoiler:breaking his beads, older Momiji, Rin with short hair,]] and basically spoils all the pairings.
* TransformationFiction: The story partly focuses on the Sohma family, the ones cursed to transform into animals of the EasternZodiac when hugged by the member of the opposite sex that's also not a Zodiac member or when they become physically weak/ill.
* TrashOfTheTitans:
** How Shigure's house was until Tohru moved in. A throwaway gag later reveals that his bedroom remains like this.
** Machi's apartment isn't much better, being littered with trash and empty cardboard boxes. It likely has something to do with her hatred of anything "perfect" and organized.
* TraumaticHaircut: [[spoiler:Isuzu/Rin has long hair until it gets crudely sheared by Akito in a punishable rage after a run-in with Akito late in the manga.]]
* TripTrap: In one scene Hatsuharu Sohma wants to speak with Kyo Sohma, who is currently running a marathon. He stops him by holding a piece of string across the race path and trips him.
* TroubledButCute: Kyo, who starts out as an ArrogantKungFuGuy.
* TruerToTheText: The 2019 anime adaptation follows the manga more faithfully than the 2001 anime, which is generally LighterAndSofter with more focus on comedy and makes several changes to the story (including [[spoiler:unintentionally {{Gender Flip}}ping Akito]]).
* {{Tsundere}}: Kyo is short-tempered and violent, but being around Tohru brings out his softer side.
%%* TwistedEchoCut: In the second to last chapter.
* UselessBystanderParent: Momiji's dad. Despite promising to make up for his wife's rejection of her son, all he does is enable her neglect, coddling her so that she never even has to ''see'' the son she abandoned. He has his reasons (Momiji's mother was apparently fragile to the point of nervous breakdown), but we only see Momiji's dad making the boy's life even more difficult in his quest to shield his wife, such as demanding apologies when Momiji accidentally runs into his mother and sister, and ending his beloved violin lessons so that his sister had unobstructed access to Momiji's tutor. He clearly acknowledges that what happened to Momiji was wrong, but takes his wife's side to the detriment of his son.
* VomitDiscretionShot: In the manga, Kyo's expulsion is discreetly covered...''by BishieSparkle!'' Also Tohru, in an off-panel shot while [[spoiler:chasing after Kyo in the cat's true form]], as well as in the manga flashback when Kyoko is first revealed to be pregnant, she's leaning over the sink.
* WallPinOfLove: Yuki does this to Tohru in the classroom in the second episode.
* WhamLine:
** Akito revealing to Tohru [[spoiler:they are not the Rooster as she initially thought, but the ''God'' of the Zodiac]].
** In one of Kyo's flashbacks in the second anime, it's not how the line is said, but ''who'' says it.
--->[[spoiler: '''Kyoko''']]: I'll never forgive you...
** Kureno has two back to back -- [[spoiler: Not only has he been freed from his curse for years, but Akito is actually a woman]].
* WholeEpisodeFlashback:
** Uo's backstory is mostly presented in this format. In the 2019 anime, it's two episodes long.
** Hana's backstory is entirely flashback with bits of narration from her in the present.
** Yuki has one showing his life as a kid as he comes to the conclusion that [[spoiler:he doesn't love Tohru in a romantic way]].
* WholesomeCrossdresser: Ritsu Sohma likes to wear woman's clothing, as it helps him cope with his anxiety.
* {{Yandere}}:
** Kagura, given that she shows her love to Kyo through harassment and violence.
** [[spoiler: Akito - she is highly possessive of Kureno, to the point of not letting him spend any time with the other Zodiac members, and stabs him when he informs her he intends to move on with his life.]]
** [[spoiler: Ren takes it a step further - she is traumatized by the sudden death of Akira, her husband and Akito's father, and projects that rage onto Akito. She even forces her to present herself as a man to the rest of the family in order to convince herself that she was the only woman Akira loved.]]
* TheWorldIsJustAwesome: In first episode of the 2019 anime, Tohru stops to have a fantastic view of the city during her walk to school.
* WouldHurtAChild: The ''massive'' amounts of child abuse in general, both physical and psychological. Most of the characters are able to escape or overcome it by the end of the series, but it's still horrifying, especially considering how well most of it is covered up. And it's made even worse when [[spoiler: the biggest of the abusers turns out to have been [[TroubledAbuser one of the most abused victims]]]].
* YaoiFangirl: In the manga, Hatori explains that he's seen Yuki naked because he's a doctor. One of the female students says "I'm relieved, but kind of disappointed."
* YouCantFightFate: Akito is convinced that no matter how far the zodiac members go, they will all return eventually because that is the nature of the curse [[spoiler:and that is what was promised to her as God of the Zodiac]].
** Yuki's attendance to a co-ed school is a light attempt to defy this trope; he refuses to live under the constant fear of transforming in front of people and then losing his connections to them.
** Kyo alarmingly seems to adapt this attitude in the last third of the manga - he accepts that he can't beat Yuki (and his attempts to do so lessen due to Tohru's influence anyway) by the time he graduates high school, but that means [[spoiler:that in accordance with his agreement with Akito, he'll be locked in the cat's room after his graduation]]. He even seems to be okay with the idea, as long as someone's around to take care of Kazuma when he isn't.
* ZodiacMotifs: Thirteen members of the Sohma clan turn into an animal of the EasternZodiac (and the Cat) when hugged by a person of the opposite sex (who isn't also cursed). Each one is associated with a different animal, and this is reflected in their appearances and personalities.

[[folder:''another'']]
[[WMG: Tropes relating to '' Fruits Basket another'' are:]]

* AbusiveParents: As is the Furuba tradition, we have Sawa's mother to add to the list of terrible authority figures. She's shrill, emotionally battering her daughter, and picks on her for every little thing. [[spoiler:It also turns out that she is effectively tormenting some of her old friends and control Sawa's social life so she'd be fully submissive and obedient to her, all while she says Sawa is no good at making friends, when '''she''' is the one that practically control her social life. Sawa's mother also ''blackmailed'' Shiki for an incident about his and Sawa's ForgottenFirstMeeting and blamed him for getting Sawa hurt when it's actually a pure accident that Sawa got hurt. [[TheDogBitesBack And that is when Sawa decided that she had enough of her mother]]]].
* AllegedLookalikes: Riku and Sora Sohma wouldn't even count under HalfIdenticalTwins, given their different facial features, heights, and [[SiblingYinYang personalities]].
* ApologizesALot: So much that it's almost a CharacterCatchphrase for poor Sawa.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Hajime likes to look at the other students in the school as his siblings rather than classmates. Sawa gets a first hand experience with this when she keeps apologizing for bumping into him.
* BrokenBird: Sawa pretty much starts the narrative as this. Because of an unspecified event in her childhood, people that were once her friends started to push her away, and with no help from her mother, she began her first year worried that she'd be a burden to everyone she even so much as looks at. [[spoiler:Later, it turns out that Sawa's mother had been tormenting her old friends without her knowledge and tried to control her life so Sawa will be completely obedient to her]].
* DelicateAndSickly:
** Not to an extreme extent, but Shiki is noted to be fairly weak due to this trope.
** Momo used to be sick when she was younger, but she's doing alright at the moment.
* DisappearedDad: Sawa's mother is mentioned and shown in the story, but Sawa's father has yet to be seen and is not mentioned at all during the first couple of chapters.
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: Sawa sports these on her [[http://www.mymanga.me/manga/Fruits_Basket_Another/3/2 student ID]], as it turns out.
* EarnYourHappyEnding: For Momiji, retroactively. He has a daughter, Mina, meaning [[CleaningUpRomanticLooseEnds he got married to someone offscreen]], and the situation with his sister seems to be resolved as Mina refers to Momo as his actual little sister, rather than an HonoraryAunt.
** [[spoiler:Nearly]] every single one of the Sohmas has a child that lives in a healthy, happy environment, with a school that adores their family, and many of them are close knit.
* ForgottenFirstMeeting: [[spoiler:A younger Sawa actually met Shiki in the past. While waiting at a park while her mother left her be, Shiki approached her and thought she felt lonely. Sawa would later fall off the stairs, slipping on the snow while waiting for her mother with Shiki as a witness. Later, Sawa's mother then ''blackmailed'' the Sohma's and claim that Shiki pushed Sawa off the stairs, when it's actually an accident and a combination of her neglect on Sawa that caused Sawa herself to fall in the first place. Sawa was not aware of this nor does she remember the incident following this. Sawa will come to remember again much later]].
* GenerationXerox: The new main trio of Sawa, Mutsuki, and Hajime quite heavily resemble Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo respectively in terms of physical appearance and in some of their mannerisms from the beginning of the story. Sawa is the clumsy everygirl who seems to be unconnected to the Sohmas, Mutsuki is the kind, handsome prince of the school, and Hajime is the rough sounding delinquent. And just like their counterparts, they all start to show HiddenDepths beyond their initial impressions. In a downplayed case of this, however, Mutsuki seemed to be far more cheerful than his father and Hajime also had [[TeamDad some of his]] [[CoolBigBro mother's traits]].
** There are exceptions among the new Sohmas though. For example, Sora ([[spoiler:[[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} Haru]] and [[BrokenBird Rin]]]]'s daughter) is a cutesy GenkiGirl, Shiki ([[spoiler:[[LovableSexManiac Shigure]] and [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds Akito]]]]'s son) is [[ShrinkingViolet kind of shy]] and openly friendly to his younger family members and Chizuru ([[spoiler:[[LargeHam Ayame]] and [[CosplayOtakuGirl Mine]]]]'s son) is a foul-mouthed JerkWithAHeartOfGold.
** It's not just them, either; the whole school has {{Exp|y}}ies of all the previous characters, and some of it's instilled. Ruriko, for example, is president of the Sohma Fan Club like her mother Motoko, the previous head, but exaggerates this to the point where her fan club is for ''every Sohma in the school''.
* TheGhost: According to Takaya, none of the main cast appears in this manga. True to form, they're no-shows in the main series, and they're only mentioned in passing. However, the extra comics feature silhouettes and faceless cameos of a few of the characters.
* GirlishPigtails: Sawa sports these. [[spoiler:Sawa dropping this and letting her shoulder hair length loose is akin to an ImportantHaircut that Sawa is moving away from being bound to her mother's control]].
* HatesTheirParent: More like hates their grandparents. It's clear to the new generation of Sohmas that most of their parents suffered a lot from the abusive members of the pre-Zodiac generation, they even continue their abuse and hatred to this day. Most of these characters refuse to interact with them, some like Hajime outright dispises them seeing them as hateful individuals.
** [[spoiler: Sawa slowly seeps into this with her own mother as the story goes on and she realizes the depths of her mother's control.]]
* [[SheIsAllGrownUp He Is All Grown Up]]: Megumi Hanajima looks like he grew up quite [[TallDarkAndHandsome nicely]] when we see him as a teacher, though he's still fixated about curses.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Sawa indulges in this from time to time, stating that she can't get close to any person because she feels that she'll just be an annoyance to them.
* LargeHam: Makoto Takei as a teacher. Some things never change, it seems.
* LateForSchool: The story starts off like this, but instead of focusing on the journey ''to'' school, it starts with the superintendent reprimanding Sawa for coming in tardy.
* LegendaryInTheSequel: The Sohmas are a big deal again, but this time Kirisaki celebrates any and all members of the clan, and worship them just as the Prince Yuki Fan Club did years ago.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: Mutsuki and [[spoiler:Kakeru]]'s daughter get along like this, mostly because they're cousins and have known each other for practically their whole lives.
* MaybeEverAfter: [[spoiler:''another'' ends with Sawa meeting Shiki, Chizuru and Rio to guide them to the school's festival, implying that things are looking up for her and Shiki little by little]].
** [[spoiler: A later bonus chapter released with the final season of the anime has an older, taller Shiki all-but telling Sawa that he intends to marry her.]]
* MommasBoy: Hajime's described as this.
* OneCastMemberPerCover: Like the first series, every volume cover has a main character on them. Sawa is on Volume 1, Mutsuki on Volume 2, Hajime on Volume 3, and Shiki on Volume 4.
* OverTheShoulderCarry: [[spoiler:Haru and Rin's son]] Riku thinks Sawa is sick, so he picks her up and places her over his shoulder to carry her to the infirmary.
* ParentalNeglect: In Chapter 1 Part 2, Sawa mentions that she and her mother don't speak very much, and that she's always popping in and out at odd times.
* PrecociousCrush: Shiki, a middle school student, has a small crush on Sawa, a high school teenager.
* SequelSeries: For the original ''Fruits Basket''.
* ShipTease: Between Sawa and Shiki. Sawa finds Shiki incredibly beautiful for his young age, and on Shiki's part he gets nervous and flustered whenever he hears that Sawa's in the area. [[spoiler:There's that ForgottenFirstMeeting of theirs too]].
* ShoutOut: Riku and Sora's names serve as an obvious nod to ''Franchise/KingdomHearts''. They even share several personality traits with their respective namesakes; see SiblingYinYang below for more details.
** Sora makes a nod to a certain other manga while encouraging Sawa to take the initiative with Shiki:
--->'''Sora''': In this world, [[Manga/KaguyaSamaLoveIsWar whoever speaks first is the winner!]]
* ShrinkingViolet: Shiki Sohma is a bit of this. [[spoiler:It likely stems from the broken home he and Akito are still a part of.]]
* SiblingYinYang:
** [[PolarOppositeTwins Riku and Sora]]. Riku is tall, silent, and somewhat incapable of telling Sawa what he wants to say. Sora is shorter, bubbly, sociable, and tries to say what's on her mind all the time. It helps that one has short white hair and the other has long black hair.
** Chizuru is a child, irritable, snippy, and a little uncouth. His older sister on the other hand has her parents' eccentricities down pat, and is much friendlier.
* SpinOffspring: So far, the narrative explicitly tells us that Mutsuki is Yuki and [[spoiler: Machi]]'s son, Hajime as Kyo's through mentioning Kazuma as his grandfather, that Mina is Momiji's, and that Shiki is [[spoiler:Shigure and Akito]]'s, but by the looks of the other Sohmas in the story, it's quite obvious who ended up being the children of who. Sawa is the only exception, since she doesn't have a previous cast member's surname or a non-familial connection with them.
* SpiritualAntithesis: The story is an inversion of its predecessor; while the original series has Tohru, the normal girl, providing a reprieve for the Sohmas, [[spoiler:''another'' is mostly about the Sohmas providing a home and FamilyOfChoice for the clumsy everygirl Sawa]]. Even Sawa herself is the opposite of Tohru--while similar in their roles, Tohru lived with a loving mother who wants the best for her no matter what, [[spoiler:while Sawa lived with an abusive, neglectful mother who effectively controlled her social life, all while she batters her daughter emotionally]].
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: "Oh, come on. I am not a cat. Not once, since I was born, have I turned into a cat when embraced." Subtle, Hajime.
* TearsOfJoy:
** Every time Sawa experiences the joy and tenderness she never received in her own home, [[TenderTears she cries]].
** In one of the extra chapters, Yuki sheds happy years over hearing a young Mutsuki telling him that he's glad to be a part of a loving home.
