''Ah! My Goddess'' is a long-running manga by Creator/KosukeFujishima that tells the [[RomCom romantic yet comedic story]] of Keiichi Morisato, a short fellow with low self-esteem studying engineering in college, and the three [[Myth/NorseMythology Norse goddesses]] who move in with him. Because he is a genuinely good person, the sweet and beautiful Belldandy, Norn of the Present, is sent by "The Goddess Relief Agency"[[labelnote:†]]"Goddess Help Line" in some translations[[/labelnote]] in Heaven to grant him a wish. Keiichi, convinced he's being set up for a practical joke by the upperclassmen in his dorm, [[BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor wishes that a girl just like her would stay with him forever]].

So she does.

From there, Keiichi and Belldandy enter into a very sweet, very low-key romance, but then Belldandy's sultry elder sister Urd (the Norn of the Past) shows up, irritated because they haven't moved faster and into more advanced levels of intimacy. Then their kid sister Skuld (the Norn of the Future) appears, convinced that Keiichi is no good for her big sister and seeking to sabotage the relationship. Matters are further complicated by Keiichi's sister Megumi (who in the grand tradition of ''Series/{{Bewitched}}'' knows nothing about the supernatural nature of the sisters); the demoness Mara, who has a grudge against the goddesses; and a large cast of additional supporting characters from Heaven, Hell, and the student body of the Nekomi Institute of Technology, where Keiichi attends classes.

Beginning serialization in Kodansha's ''Afternoon'' manga anthology in November 1988, ''Ah! My Goddess'' (or ''Oh My Goddess!'' depending on which part of the franchise it is) combines the finest elements of America's 1960's [[FantasticComedy "supernatural sitcoms"]] with a tender and sweet love story… and no small amount of both lighthearted slapstick comedy and intense drama. True to its roots, the series has a noticeably subdued use of {{Fanservice}} compared to other BishoujoSeries. The innocent nature of the series make it receivable to a much wider audience (particularly a younger audience) than regular {{Seinen}}. It was also the first exposure many anime fans in the West had to the YamatoNadeshiko archetype.

The series spawned numerous adaptations over its long life, including a five-episode {{OVA}} series in the mid-1990s (which this entry was originally written for – it's the source of the page image), [[TheMovie a motion picture]], and a GagSeries called ''Anime/TheAdventuresOfMiniGoddess''. This was followed much later by two season-long TV series that more faithfully adapted early manga material – the first began in late 2004; the second, "Flights Of Fancy"[[labelnote:†]] (that's its international title; the original Japanese subtitle is ''Sorezore wo Tsubasa'' or "Everyone Has Wings")[[/labelnote]] began in 2006 and is a direct continuation of the first season. Those were followed by a 2-episode TV special to celebrate the franchise's 20th anniversary called "Fighting Wings". A new "OAD" (Original Animation DVD) called "Itsumo Futari de" was released in 2009 and bundled with Volume 42 in Japan.

In TheNewTens, the manga's tone suddenly shifted, fuelling speculation from fans that the series was heading towards a conclusion. Sure enough, in April 2014, Fujishima ended ''Goddess'' after 25½ years of serialization, spanning 48 books and 308 chapters.

Most of this franchise has found its way to the West, where it has garnered a loyal fanbase. Creator/DarkHorseComics publishes a well-regarded translation of the manga, which is notable for being ''the'' longest-running English-language manga (by timespan), beginning in 1994 and lasting twenty-one years. The OVA series was released in North America by Creator/AnimEigo. TheMovie and ''Mini-Goddess'' were handled by Creator/{{Geneon}} (then known as Pioneer). The first season of the TV series was licensed by Creator/MediaBlasters, but Creator/ADVFilms licensed the second – both seasons use the same dub cast, though. The manga is still in-print – Dark Horse began reprinting the series in omnibus volumes in 2016 after finishing the original run at the end of 2015. However, the rights to the various anime adaptations have all lapsed and the series are out-of-print.

Not to be confused with ''Manga/AhMyBuddha'', though that show's rights-holders would like you to be.

A new spin-off manga that takes place after the end of the events of the original series has been announced. It will be called ''Ah! My Job-Hunting Goddess'', it will be about Belldandy having to find a job due to a recession. Its scheduled to premier in the March 2019 issue of Kodansha Monthly Afternoon magazine.

!!This series provides examples of:
[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:A to D]]
* ACupAngst: Hasegawa sometimes displays this, especially when she's drunk. Skuld does too whenever Urd points it out.
* AboveTheInfluence: Keiichi, to the point it drives everyone else nuts.
** In Chapter 43 (Episode 19 in the anime), thanks to a MagicMisfire, Belldandy spends a day throwing herself at Keiichi (including, at least in the manga, taking him to watch a porn movie). He realizes that ''something's'' up and refrains.
** Sayoko shows up drunk at his temple house in the very next chapter (Episode 28 of the anime), throwing herself at (and throwing up on) him. She later wakes up and finds herself sleeping in one of their futons.
** Starting in Chapter 66 (Episode 32 of the anime), Peorth shows up and immediately starts trying to get him in bed with her. Naturally, none of her tricks work.
** Belldandy also counts. At one point Hild succeeds in implanting a demonic familiar inside her, hoping her soul would be corrupted. Instead, the familiar was purified.
* AccidentalProposal: At the very conclusion of the manga, Belldandy reveals that [[spoiler:Keiichi's wish for 'a goddess like you to stay with me forever' is the ''exact'' phrase one uses to propose marriage to a god or goddess. In hindsight, this goes a long way explaining the tone of their relationship.]]
* AdaptationDistillation: The manga ran for over 25 years and took a long time to hit its stride. The TV series (the first season at any rate) – produced over 15 years into the comic's run – focused almost entirely on Keiichi and Belldandy's developing romance. Everything that didn't support or relate to that plotline was cut out or shifted to the second season. As a result, the romance was able to go much further and deeper than the equivalent parts of the manga. Furthermore, because the first season was meant to be self-contained, the arc reached its conclusion in Episode 24.
* AdaptationExpansion: The first episode of the TV series spends its time establishing Keiichi's character – a NiceGuy who is always taken advantage of but always does the right thing – thus justifying exactly ''why'' the Goddess Help Line would choose him. The episode ends with the [[MeetCute first scene]] of the manga.
* AdaptationInducedPlotHole: Happens in the TV series a few times, particularly the second season.
** An unfortunate side effect of the first season's PragmaticAdaptation – Belldandy shows hints of her jealousy storms in Episode 11, and Keiichi remarks on it to an utterly oblivious Bell. But when ''Flights of Fancy'' reaches the point in the manga where the jealousy storms originally appear (Ep.32/Ch.57), Keiichi is shocked to learn Bell can get jealous. In other words, the anime adapted the latter manga chapter faithfully, forgetting to fully account for the hints they'd given earlier.
** Episode 29 [-(adapting manga Chapter 16)-] chronicles Keiichi's attempt to afford a ring for Belldandy. However, future episodes of the anime do not show Bell wearing it. This is in stark contrast to the manga where, once [=K1=] gives her that ring, she '''never''' takes it off (except maybe while bathing). Bell uses it as a metaphor for love throughout the series, and it becomes quite the ChekhovsGun during the Niflheim arc.
** Late in the second season, we see Skuld use her stamp power, but never actually get to see her develop it. [[note]] In the manga, she does so shortly after accidentally "intercepting" Keiichi's love confession, and then feeling out of sorts enough to make Keiichi take her on a date. In the TV series, these events aren't anywhere close to each other (Eps.18 & 26, respectively, the latter combined with Skuld's temporary OvernightAgeUp).[[/note]]
** Chihiro has her introductory episode (a reasonably faithful adaptation of manga chapter 76), but because the rest of the arc establishing her character wasn't animated, it's never explained ''why'' Tamiya and Otaki are so terrified of her. [[labelnote:Here's Why]] They fell in love with her, and both proposed to her within a day of each other. Chihiro couldn't decide between them, so she rejected them to avoid fracturing the Motor Club.[[/labelnote]]
*** By that same token, her shop "Whirlwind" – a major setting in the manga – is not even mentioned until the final episode… where it's seen.
*** Chihiro is given short shrift by ''Flights Of Fancy'' due to her comparatively late appearance in the source material. This is unfortunate because much of the season was taken up by episodic stories which, though almost all came directly from the manga, nonetheless amounted to {{filler}} episodes that could have been jettisoned to make room for more development of the primary characters.
** The TV series never explains the relationship between Toshiyuki and Sayoko – why they're on FirstNameBasis with each other and why Toshiyuki never hits on Sayoko despite his tendency to flirt with attractive girls. They're first-cousins, which Sayoko tells Keiichi early on in the manga.
* AffablyEvil: Urd's mother Hild is the CEO of the Demon Realm, but she's also a caring (though spurned) parent and a big flirt. A lot of the bad things that happen to the main characters in the second half of the manga are directly or indirectly caused by her. In ''Flights of Fancy'', she decided to steal Keiichi from Belldandy just to see how Bell would react. In the canon manga though she ends up revealing she's ultimately not really evil, and in fact still in love with the top god of Yggsdrasil who also loves her back, and her main goal simply being to undo a system she sees as unjust for separating loved ones the way it did her and him.
* TheAlcoholic:
** Urd, partially because drinking booze restores expended energy for her.
** Megumi, whenever she gets dumped.
* AlcoholInducedBisexuality: Alluded to and Defied. Sayoko wakes up after a night of heavy drinking to find someone in bed with her. It's the demon Marller. She accuses Marller of getting her drunk to take advantage of her. Marller protests that she's a woman, too, which only causes Sayoko to angrily protest that she doesn't swing that way, either. In a huff, Marller tells her not to flatter herself.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Averted. There's a grand total of ''one'' bad boy in this series – Toshiyuki Aoshima, who is established as TheCasanova, and is (especially in the anime) often accompanied by an entourage of reasonably attractive girls. However, his efforts to pick up any of the major female characters are universally failures. This is a series where genuinely nice guys get the girls. And yet played straight with Sora Hasegawa, who has a huge crush on Aoshima.
* AlternateContinuity: There are multiple {{animated adaptation}}s, none of which jive 100% with the source material.
** The OVA in particular is its own unique continuity, completely self-contained and having ''nothing'' to do with the manga after the third episode.
** As detailed in PragmaticAdaptation below, the TV series – though hewing much closer to the manga – shuffles early events around during the first season for better narrative flow.
** TheMovie is a completely original story that (despite its being produced less than halfway through the manga's run) serves as a capstone to the series. It could easily follow either the OVA or the TV series. Bizarrely, one central element of the movie ended up becoming canon in the manga over a decade later: [[spoiler:The Gate Of Judgement.]]
** The manga began in 1988, and time seemed to have only progressed to the mid-90's by the time it ended in 2014. The 2005 TV series, by contrast, is all over the place when it comes to technology.
** ''Itsumo Futari de'' has gone all out on this trope. Both stories are original to the anime, and have no basis at all in the manga. The second episode introduces both a school for young Goddesses (Seizu Girls' Academy), and two new characters: Eri and Saga, two ''teenage'' goddesses obsessed with being the best.
* AnachronismStew: Although Fujishima made an effort to keep the story grounded in its late-80's / early-90's origin, this crops up in the manga from time to time – at one point, Peorth is shown watching a TV broadcast of ''WesternAnimation/TheIronGiant'', a movie that came out in 1999 (the manga chapter itself ran in 2000).
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: Literal example. When Mara [[spoiler:messed with Belldandy's goddess license to turn her into a demon in the TV series, she tells the former goddess to commit crimes in order to avoid more troubles for Keiichi.]] One of the "evil" deeds she commits is jaywalking.
** Another occurrence in a scene where an American submarine is hit underwater by an unknown (to them) object, and the damage reports are: "Flooding in aft torpedo room!" "Starboard trim tanks damaged, sir!" "Missile hatches jammed!" "Captain's coffee mug cracked!"
* ArtEvolution: Expected, considering the manga ran for over 25 years. Look at the first chapter and then look at one of the last – they do not look like they were drawn by the same guy.
** There's even a massive shift just within the first dozen or so chapters (i.e. the first two volumes) as the art improves and the character designs settle down.
** The various instalments of the anime are practically a record of how Fujishima's art style changed over the years. The OVA (1993-96) looks very different from the movie (2000) and the TV series (2005-07).
* ArtNouveau: The illustrations often incorporate this style to the point it's our answer to the question of what would happen if Alphonse Mucha became a mangaka.
* AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence: Anyone going through the series will realize the MayflyDecemberRomance could be prolonged by invoking this trope. [[spoiler:By the end of the manga, not only is it demonstrably shown to be possible with the Lake Goddess' origin, but Tyr's last words to Keiichi are that the latter will someday ask him about it. Keiichi smiles and declines anyway.]]
* AssimilationBackfire: The Lord of Terror attempts to possess Belldandy but fails to because of their different pulses.
* AuthorAppeal: Kosuke Fujishima is quite the motorhead, so expect to see quite a few rare, highly-detailed motorcycles, cars, and the like in the series.
** This also leads to lots and lots of racing arcs… that take up [[ArcFatigue a rather large portion of the total manga]] and may be frustrating if you only follow it [[JustHereForGodzilla to see pretty girls being wonderful]].
** He loves cameras just as much as he loves motorcycles; some chapters in the manga involve those in many situations, especially in a story arc in volume 35.
* AuthorAvatar: Like Fujishima, Keiichi loves mechanics. In fact, Fujishima has gone on the record stating that some of the events in ''AMG!'' were autobiographical.
* AwfulTruth: In Chapter 285, Hild drops a bombshell on Keiichi. [[spoiler:When he first made the contract with Belldandy, Heaven altered his mind to suppress his desire towards Belldandy. This was done to maintain the separation between gods and men in the face of a contract that bound a goddess to a mortal. And both Belldandy and Urd knew this all along. It's implied that every goddess except for Skuld has been aware of this mental manipulation from day one.[[note]] This is a bit of a retcon though. Early chapters have Keiichi try various ways to kiss Belldandy and it's quite obvious that he still has a lot of desire towards her.[[/note]]]]
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther:
** Urd and Skuld are constantly at each others' throats, but they're much closer to each other than either of them is to Belldandy, so this crops up a lot.
** Even though Urd will never openly admit she loves her demon queen mother, every single scene between her and Hild oozes this trope.
* BadassBiker:
** Chihiro, Megumi, and the Motor Queen. Belldandy also has the riding skills to count, although she doesn't ride as much as the other three.
** At one point late in the manga, Bell specifically asks Keiichi to let her ride solo because she ''wants'' to be one.
* BadassNormal:
** Keiichi gradually evolves into one. On the Angel Eater Arc, [[spoiler:he's able to bear Lind's angel and kicks ass like a god despite being an ordinary mortal - apparently due to his godlike pureness of heart and being loved by multiple goddesses]].
** And again on the Niflheim Arc, when [[spoiler:he actively helps the goddesses with the challenges AND is able to fight against the current Demon Lord's spell.]]
** Chihiro, who can cow Otaki and Tamiya with a glance, qualifies as well.
* BadassPacifist: Belldandy.
* BaitAndSwitchCredits:
** Mara appears in the opening credits of the OVA series but never actually appears in the series itself. This was apparently because the animators couldn't animate her very curly hair correctly. [[note]] By the time the TV series came around 11 years later, Mara's design had shifted to where her hair was much less curly, and thus easier to animate.[[/note]] This also applies to myriad other things in that sequence – the Infernal Urn, Kodama, Urd riding a vacuum, and so on.
** Keima and Takano Morisato are in the 4th ending of the TV series but never show up in the series proper. Same with Sigel, who is also in that ending yet her existence is never even hinted at in the show.
* BalkingSummonedSpirit:
** Garm, a demonic wolf spirit, was not happy at having been summoned at all by a human medium, but is positively outraged that he was not the spirit meant to be summoned, meaning he was disturbed for no reason at all. He attacks, and it takes the combined effort of Belldandy, Urd, and Skuld to banish him again.
** Inverted by Peorth. Peorth is very surprised to discover that Keiichi did ''not'' intend to summon her from the [[CelestialBureaucracy Earth Relief Helpline]], as Keiichi is a bit [[{{Understatement}} full up on goddesses at the moment]]. However, Peorth refuses to return to Heaven until Keiichi makes a wish from her, and she's fairly certain she ''knows'' what it is he wants. (As a clue she tells him to [[PornStash check a drawer in his desk]]). When Belldandy tells Keiichi she ''wants'' to eventually do those things with him, Keiichi says those words satisfy his wish, and it turns out it was a BatmanGambit by Heaven to accomplish just that.
* BareHandedBladeBlock: Hild does this in two separate fights with Lind, once in the Fighting Wings arc and again in Chapter 248.
* BaseballEpisode: Chapter 58 of the manga, to be precise, with a ragtag team led by Megumi and a somewhat reluctant Keiichi.
* BatmanGambit:
** From Keiichi, of all people. In the penultimate arc he asks to go to Niflheim, knowing full well that Belldandy will have no choice but to protect him, eliminating any scenarios where she uses her full power to solve the current crisis.
** Hild turns out to be the mastermind behind [[spoiler:her own usurpation]]. She planted all of the participants but didn't need to give them any instructions at all; they all just did her bidding without even realizing it.
* BeachEpisode: At least three times in the manga[[labelnote:†]] ("Ultimate Force Down", "Meet Me by the Seashore", Lorelei arc)[[/labelnote]]. The OVA has one (Ep.2), and the TV series has one actual beach episode (Ep.18) and then another one set at a pool. The final OAD also has one.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor:
** The very basis of the story, although it's really a subversion – look at the girlfriend Keiichi got!
** Holds true with demons, who, even when they don't [[JerkassGenie cheat you on your wish]], will still ask for something in return.
** Played straight when Belldandy gets drunk on cola, and runs around indiscriminately granting wishes.
** Also when Peorth shows up to give Keiichi a second wish. When he actually makes the wish he's terrified.
** Also when Urd tries to make Keiichi happy, when she's testing for her first-class license.
** And when Keiichi has the familiar, who tries to grant even his ''unspoken'' wishes.
** So every wish except the very first one.
* BenevolentGenie: Goddesses. Even Urd, whose mischievous nature has gotten her in trouble, has good ''intentions''.
* BerserkButton: Whatever you do, do ''not''…
** …convince Belldandy that you will cause bodily harm to Keiichi (see "BewareTheNiceOnes", below).
** …think about doing anything negative to Keiichi at all. Aside from Belldandy going off on you (the worst possible thing that can happen in this series), Urd will punish you for hurting her sister's love interest; Peorth, who's nearly as powerful as Bell, is quite fond of him, keeps whips, and is not afraid to use them; Lind, the strongest of the Valkyries, considers him her "lifelong friend" – and as far as anyone can tell, her '''only''' friend (except maybe Peorth later on); the Gate Of Heaven doesn't appreciate efforts to mess with him; even ''[[BrattyHalfPint Skuld]]'' likes him… so long as he doesn't get too close to Belldandy.
** …be a girl and get too close to Keiichi. Belldandy's powers spike when she feels jealous.
** …bad-mouth any of Skuld's inventions, or show affection toward Belldandy whenever Skuld is present.
** …badmouth Skuld in front of Sigel; she doesn't appreciate it.
** …bring a girl into the Auto Club's dorm. Tamiya and Otaki will personally throw you out.
** …say "no" to Hild, [[ImmortalImmaturity for whatever reason]].
*** Urd is something of an exception to this, being Hild's daughter.
*** So is Belldandy, seeing as Bell flat-out refused Hild's request to be given Keiichi. This may be because of Bell's personality being similar to her father's (i.e. Hild's ex).
** [[ShipperOnDeck Chihiro, Urd, and eventually Peorth]] will explode with rage when Keiichi is being exceptionally difficult with moving his relationship with Belldandy forward.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Belldandy. She is afforded tremendous power because her stable personality ensures that she won't abuse it, with the dangerous caveat that if she ''does'' do so, it will be overlooked by ThePowersThatBe.
** This trope's application to her gets cranked up any time Keiichi's well-being is threatened (see above). A prime example is in the "Dream Castle" arc when [[spoiler:Tamiya and Otaki have been brainwashed into attacking Keiichi and try to crush him between them]]… only to be blasted with an attack spell by Bell. No trying to talk them out of it, no attempt to break their mind control, no sleep spell to peacefully resolve the situation; she just flat-out ''struck them down''. They survived, but the simple fact that Bell actually got ''angry'' enough to utilize an offensive spell on friends was enough to shake Skuld to her core (and readers too). Even Urd is disturbed enough by it to order Bell to stand back in case of future attacks.
** In the manga, she uses an open handed martial art to fight – yes, FIGHT – a demon who is all muscle. She actually attacks the demon the second she feels the demon wants to harm Keiichi. Just to be clear, Belldandy struck FIRST. She didn't wait for an explanation like usual, she just slammed her hand into the demon, no questions asked.
* BeyondTheImpossible: In Chapter 40 (Episode 14), [[TimTaylorTechnology Skuld upgrades the output on Keiichi's motorcycle to about 113%]]. Megumi was impressed, even as her big brother was horrified, but pointed out to Skuld the futility of said upgrade – the bike's chassis would not be able to withstand the extra power. Sure enough, once Keiichi (unwillingly) tested out his bike, it nearly sent him into orbit… then exploded. The manga goes into further detail: Skuld could, with difficulty, insert a turbo before the carburetor, but the brakes can't take it.
* {{Bifauxnen}}: Mara looked like this early in the manga's run, and both Sayoko and Megumi mistake her for a guy. Later on in the manga (and by extension the entirety of the TV series), she looks more obviously feminine.
* BigDamnKiss: [[spoiler:Finally in Chapter 278, complete with thousands of FLOWERS bursting from the floor.]] [[{{Squee}} Thank your Goddess of choice!]]
* BigDamnMovie: TheMovie released in 2000 puts Belldandy through a TraumaCongaLine with the fate of the world at stake, featuring gorgeous animation and music.
* BigFancyHouse:
** The Monk's House at Tariki-Hongan Temple (where Keiichi and the Norns live) is fairly average-sized for a traditional house outside of Tokyo – five rooms plus the bathroom and kitchen – but the grounds are absolutely enormous; there's a small forest in the back.
** The Mishima mansion, where Sayoko's parents live, was a French chalet transplanted to Japan… until Skuld and Urd trashed it.
** Satoko Yamano, Otaki's girlfriend, lives in one of these. Her father ''is'' NIT's President.
* BigThinShortTrio: Arguable – Skuld is short, Belldandy is thin, and while Urd is only a little taller than Belldandy, she's ''definitely'' more voluptuous.
** After Chihiro's introduction, Tamiya, Otaki and she (respectively) can be seen like this. However, Chihiro is actually fairly average height for a girl (about 5'4"); it's just that Tamiya and Otaki must have been pumped full of growth hormones.
* BishoujoSeries: With some of the bishiest bishoujo ever put on paper too. That's {{justified|Trope}} because they are [[AngelicBeauty divine beings]]. (Or sometimes [[HotAsHell infernal]])
* BlandNameProduct: Played straight most of the time, with brands like "Coco-Cola", "Ninlenbo", and "Moddess".
** Averted with all of the cars, motorcycles, and cameras.
* BodySnatcher: Happens more than once to more than one character.
** Poor, poor Keiichi. Let's count the ways…
*** He gets possessed by the Lord Of Terror when he tries to protect Skuld.
*** Urd and Peorth both take control of his body in (failed) attempts to reawaken his libido.
*** Celestine possesses him at the climax of TheMovie.
** Urd also gets possessed by the Lord Of Terror.
** Megumi's body is briefly possessed by Mara early in the series.
** Hild tries to do this via proxy to Belldandy but fails.
* BodySurf: The Lord of Terror. First he possesses Urd, then he takes over Keiichi, after that he tries to inhabit Belldandy but is unable to… at which point he is promptly defeated by Skuld – she tricks him into possessing a floppy disk, which she pops the tab on to make it read-only, then erases with a magnet.
* BodyToJewel: In one chapter Hild extracts a fragment of herself in crystallized form to give to Keiichi to use against Hagal.
* BookEnds: The story starts with Keiichi wishing that a goddess like Belldandy could stay by his side forever. The story ends with Keiichi saying the same words [[spoiler:after the two are married]].
* BottledHeroicResolve: This is the primary reason why Urd keeps brewing love potions to slip to Keiichi or Bell (or both).
** In the second episode of the OVA, Urd gives Keiichi a love potion under this guise. It makes Kei pass out, and fall deeply in love with the first person he sees when he wakes up. Unfortunately, that turned out to be Sayoko. Fortunately, [[FightingFromTheInside he was able to fight it]], and his relationship with Belldandy became stronger because of it.
* {{Bowdlerization}}: The Studio Proteus (flipped) version of Chapter 58 changed the text on Megumi's jacket from "URD ''DRUG'' JUNKIES" to "URD ''SAKÉ'' JUNKIES". The Dark Horse (unflipped) reprint restored the original text.
* BoyfriendBlockingDad: [[spoiler:Tyr/The Almighty. Despite Keiichi passing the test allowing him to keep his relationship with Belldandy, Tyr says He won't accept it until Keiichi performs a miracle.]]
* BrattyHalfPint: Skuld, particularly early on. This is especially pronounced in the TV series because it mainly covers the first third of the manga, before most of Skuld's CharacterDevelopment.
* BreakTheCutie: The demons try this with Bell all the time. [[LighterAndsofter Nothing really disturbing ever happens though]]…
** …that is, until the end of the manga where she's finally forced to confront the implications of her relationship with Keiichi. Neither of them take it well. [[spoiler:They work it through swiftly, though.]]
** The events of the spinoff novel, ''First End'', break her completely. [[spoiler:Keiichi dies, and Bell hacks the universe to bring him back. She succeeds but is unable to rekindle their relationship.]]
* BreakTheHaughty: Peorth seems to exist to prove that it's possible to humiliate a 1st-Class goddess in myriad ways.
** Urd believes Skuld is in dire need of this, because Skuld's over-reliance on technology keeps her from growing up or developing her powers, but her ego regarding said technology makes her unwilling to realize it.
* BreakingTheFourthWall: Happens from time to time in the manga.
** In one particular chapter, after the usual madness – which happened, thankfully, without him – Keiichi said that he "could'a stayed in bed this issue".
** When Peorth, Urd, and Skuld are all brainstorming ways to "help out" Keiichi, he tries to talk them down before finally giving up and admitting "Not enough room in my speech bubbles to stop this".
** In the TV series, Urd makes the occasional AsideGlance.
* BridgeBunnies: Of Heaven's supercomputer Yggdrasil, no less: Ere, Ex, and Chrono, both in the movie and TV series. Only Chrono appears by name in the manga, and her job is slightly different.
* BrilliantButLazy: Urd. Her inherent powers are potentially (and outright stated by Belldandy to be) leagues above those of her sisters and probably every other deity except The Almighty and Hild – her parents, for the record – but she prefers to lay around Keiichi's house watching TV and practicing alchemy, having fun with her sisters while watching over them.
** Urd insists at least twice that this is also the case with Skuld, who is a whiz with machines yet is utterly incompetent with magic, using technology as a crutch to avoid putting in the hard work needed to actually develop her powers. Much to Skuld's horror, Belldandy doesn't disagree with this.
* BrokenBird:
** Morgan [=LeFay=] from TheMovie [[spoiler:lost faith in love after failing the Judgement Gate's test, which led to her becoming TheDragon for Celestine.]]
** Urd, to at least some degree. Despite her carefree surface persona, she's had to deal with ''a lot'' of sadness and outright prejudice due to her half-demon heritage. An early manga chapter (adapted in ''Flights Of Fancy'') showed Urd used to be in love with a Plum Tree Spirit, who dumped her to search for the "Mystical Golden Bush Warbler" – which all male Plum Tree Spirits are required to do. When he returned, Urd was less than thrilled to see him.
* BrotherSisterIncest: Drastically subverted, at one point a botched love potion fed to Keiichi causes any female who meets his eyes to become passionately infatuated with him — starting with his sister Megumi. She says, "Our love can transcend these foolish bonds of blood!" His horrified reaction: "Oh no it can't!" And he runs for it. Fortunately, neutralizing the potion wipes her memory of the incident.
** During a late manga arc, where Keiichi and Megumi (along with Belldandy, Urd, and Skuld) end up with temporary memory-wipes thanks to one of Skuld's inventions exploding, Velsper tries to force this in order to [[RemovingTheRival get Keiichi away from Bell]]. Unfortunately for him, by the time he tries, Megumi has already reassembled enough of the puzzle to immediately call him out.
* ButtMonkey:
** Several of poor Keiichi's appearances in the third quarter of the manga feature him almost exclusively sporting looks of pain or horror.
** Gan-chan the rat in the ''Mini Goddess'' shorts has it even worse.
** After losing the Four Wheels Club to the Motor Club in a bet, Aoshima became the punching bag to many characters, especially Urd and Tamiya.
** Mara. Over the course of the series, she progressively became less of a threat thanks to the Norns discovering her weaknesses pretty early on. Gets even worse whenever she teams up with another demon, where she is always the ButtMonkey.
** Peorth. Nearly every arc she appears in has her getting humiliated at least once.
* CallBack:
** Hild, upon first meeting Keiichi, explains demonic contracts by saying, "If you want to destroy the world, we can do that too." This is a (probably intentional on her part) dark reflection of Belldandy's spiel from the very first chapter.
** In Chapter 293, Keiichi and Belldandy are looking at their relationship with the help of [[spoiler:The Judgement Gate]]. One of the chapters has them [[spoiler:going back to when Belldandy was watching Keiichi before the Wish. In the flashback, she is shown exclusively in a updated version of her original design from the very first volume]].
** The first ending sequence for ''Flights Of Fancy'' features a redrawn version of [=K1=] and Bell's first meeting in Chapter 1 of the manga, only drawn in the modern art style and Bell is wearing her standard Goddess robes instead of that Indian-thing she wore in the original manga.
* CanonImmigrant: Three examples from TheMovie – the goddesses' battle outfits; BridgeBunnies Ere, Ex, and Chrono; and [[spoiler:the Judgement Gate]] all debuted there, not appearing in the manga until quite some time later – in the case of [[spoiler:the Judgement Gate and its test]], it took over ''twelve years''.
* CannotSpitItOut:
** Keiichi has a difficult time admitting he loves Belldandy, even though she knows it and he knows she knows it. It's triply justified – His father Keima is deathly afraid of women to the point of flipping out if anyone other than his wife or daughter (or Bell) gets within a yard of him. Also, he assumes for much of the series that Bell will eventually be called back to Heaven, so best to not get too attached. It turns out [[spoiler:he ''can't'' spit it out thanks to Heaven intentionally quashing his libido due to what might happen if they didn't – interspecies relationships summon the Judgement Gate, and that almost never goes well.]]
*** He ''did'' manage to say "I love you" earlier in the series (Chapter 50, Episode 18 of the anime) during a romantic moonlight stroll along the beach with Bell. However, Skuld jumped between them at just that moment, and it was treated (by both Skuld and [=K1=]) as if she had "intercepted" his words. The anime version contains a subtle but ''huge'' change – an epilogue scene where Bell is hanging futons out to dry and says to herself, "He actually told me that he loved me."
*** LoveGoddess and ShipperOnDeck Peorth gave Keiichi a serious pep talk so Keiichi could do this in Chapter 194 (TV episode 50). Unfortunately, Urd didn't think it would work, so she secretly gave him a capsule that amplified the power of the word "love". The result? Belldandy is KO'd by the power of the word, [[ComedicSociopathy and poor, poor Keiichi still hasn't officially confessed his love]].
*** On the other hand, prior to [[WhamEpisode Chapter 274]], he implied at least twice that he was waiting for some sort of Go signal from Bell.
** Bell is just as bad in her own way. She admits her love for Keiichi frequently (to anyone and everyone who asks). However, it's apparent she wants more to the relationship yet won't say anything. It turns out [[spoiler:she's aware of Heaven's MindRape of Keiichi. She's okay with it because she's afraid of facing the Judgement Gate, because if they fail the test they'll lose each other forever.]]
* CannotTellALie: An explicit requirement for being a Goddess 1st-Class, which Belldandy and Peorth are.
** Urd ''could'' have a higher rank if she was willing to accept this – she actually passed the promotion exam easily – but she refused the promotion because she felt the ability to lie was more useful than some extra firepower.
** However, that stricture doesn't prevent Bell ''or'' Peorth from [[ExactWords dancing around the truth]]. For example, in the OVA when Bell tried to get back to Keiichi [[MagicMirror via a mirror]] in the girls' bathroom when Sayoko walks in on her.
--->'''Sayoko:''' Belldandy, what was that?\
'''Belldandy (panicked):''' Oh, there's a spot on the mirror.\
''(Bell licks her finger and tries to scratch out a stain on the mirror)''
** In Chapter 68, Peorth decides to slip Keiichi a love potion (à la Urd). [=K1=] doesn't trust her and lets her know it, at which point she reminds him of her rank, which calms him down. During a five-second period when the drink is out of his sight…
--->'''Peorth:''' [-[thinking]-] ''And truthfully there '''wasn't''' anything in it… But there is now.''
* CantHoldHerLiquor: Averted for most characters. The only real lightweight amongst the girls is Sora.
* CardCarryingVillain: The series implies that demons are only bad because it's their [[PunchClockVillain assigned job]].
* CardiovascularLove: Belldandy counters Hild's ♠ kiss with a ♥ kiss to defend Keiichi. It's apparently a ''weapon''.
* TheCasanova: Aoshima thinks of himself this way.
* CastingGag: The English dub of ''Flights of Fancy'' went to great lengths to involve voice actors who had been in previous installments of the franchise.
** At one point Peorth cuddles up to Keiichi in the bath, imitating Belldandy to fool him into thinking his sweetheart wanted to scrub his back. Peorth's impression is spot-on; no wonder, since Juliet Cesario was Bell's dub actress in the 1996 OAV.
** [[Creator/DanGreen Troubadour]] challenges Keiichi to a [[Manga/YuGiOh DUEL]]!
** Creator/MaryElizabethMcGlynn played Urd in TheMovie. She plays Urd's mother Hild here.[[note]] Credited as Lucy Todd.[[/note]]
** Creator/WendeeLee voices the maid shinnentai Creator/ChiekoHonda. She played Urd in ''Mini-Goddess''.
** The original [=OVA=] had Scott Simpson as Keiichi and Juliet Cesario as Belldandy, who were dating in real life at the time. That arguably helped with their vocal chemistry.
* CatchAFallingStar: Belldandy, by letting Urd and Keiichi land on her.
* CelebrityIsOverrated [=/=] FamedInStory: Anyone related to the Tarikihongan Temple or the Motor Club are famous in NIT. Professor Kakuta even tells Belldandy and Keiichi about their local fame, and both are unaware of this fact. Even though no one is aware of the goddesses' status as such, that doesn't mean that their adventures didn't cause ripples around them.
* CentralTheme: Staying together through thick and thin.
* CerebusRetcon: Early chapters show "the system" preventing anyone from interfering with Keiichi and Belldandy's relationship. What the system enforces is literal: "A Goddess like Belldandy will always be with Keiichi", thus when people try to separate them, they get a reaction force from the system protecting the wish. Chapter 285 gives this a rather dark spin. [[spoiler:The system is also preventing their relationship from advancing, and it does so by suppressing Keiichi's libido. As in not letting him feel any lust for Belldandy. After she breaks the spell he starts looking at her differently very quickly. Then the Gate of Judgement appears. If it doesn't judge in Bell and Keiichi's favor, then they will be separated. Thus, the system prevented any possibility of that happening by preventing the relationship from triggering the Gate of Judgement.]]
* CerebusSyndrome: TheMovie stands in stark contrast to the (then-)lighthearted manga, as well as the OVA and TV series, being rather dark with next to no humor.
** The manga went there eventually – the final two arcs are much darker in tone than the rest of the story, though there was still the occasional funny moment at times to lighten up the drama.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn:
** Keiichi, from someone who would gladly kiss Belldandy given the chance early in the manga ("Mustn't... give up attempt... to score...") to someone who practically has a phobia of physical intimacy (especially in the TV series). Justified due to both such behavior being InTheBlood, and also [[spoiler:the retconning of the Ultimate Force's purpose being to seal his sexual urges.]]
** When Urd first appears in the manga she tries to rape Keiichi ([[DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnMale which is]] [[BlackComedyRape played for comedy]]) in order to "advance" his knowledge of sex - her intent was to make him less fearful of approaching intimacy with her sister. Fujishima softened her up quite a bit over the next few years and made her less of an "[[BigBrotherBully Evil Big Sister]]" and more of a [[CoolBigSis "Cool Big Sister"]] character. Also, his art style changed to make her less mean and jerky looking.
* ChastityCouple: Keiichi and Belldandy live together throughout their relationship but never get intimate, despite the implications that neither really want it that way.
* ChekhovsGun:
** [[spoiler:The flowers that appeared in Chapter 278 due to Keiichi's and Belldandy's kiss]] had appeared before, all the way back in chapter 11, when Belldandy saved Keiichi from drowning. Keiichi wondered where they came from.
** The lucky tea stalk on Keiichi's drink proves to be pivotal [[spoiler:in getting rid of Mara from possessing Megumi when Keiichi's trapped in a burning vehicle and Belldandy cannot put off the fire as her powers were sealed by Mara]].
* ChekhovsSkill: At the beginning of TheMovie, Belldandy [[spoiler:sings to an old tree to prolong its life. At the end of the movie she sings the same song to restore [[WorldTree Yggdrasil]].]]
** Keiichi's study of engineering (which included chemistry and physics classes) turned out to be the key to everyone surviving the Niflheim arc. He singlehandedly came up with the plans to defeat at least three of the demons.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: Keiichi and Belldandy, in the OVA.
** In a late episode of ''Flights of Fancy'', Hild tries to pull this card on Keiichi to intimidate Belldandy. Thankfully, it doesn't work.
* ChildhoodMarriagePromise: The final episode of the OVA revealed there was one between Keiichi and Belldandy.
* ChivalrousPervert: Keiichi, to an extent.
* ChoresWithoutPowers: While her powers aren't stripped away, Belldandy is punished for using her powers without permission and restricted from using them for a week. Any use of her powers in that time would see a permanent ban, no matter the justification she used. This doesn't really affect her day to day routines, as Bell typically did the household chores without her powers anyway (Keiichi in the early days was fearful she'd be found out and asked her not to use them unless it was an emergency, so she was accustomed to doing things in a mundane way). However, when a device Skuld created to make a storeroom BiggerOnTheInside malfunctions and turns the room into an infinite space with Bell and Keiichi at the middle, Bell fears that Keiichi might starve in the slotted week. Fortunately, Keiichi remembered that Skulds device affected width and breadth, but not height. He and Bell are able to exit by removing a floor panel.
* CirclingBirdies: Although BlankWhiteEyes are typically used, in the manga and ''Flights of Fancy'' arc where [[spoiler:Mara splits Urd into her demon and goddess halves, one Urd charges toward the other Urd]], and the two spin 'round-and-'round so Keiichi, Belldandy, and Skuld can't tell who's who.
** Happens earlier than that in the TV series — during Urd's debut episode, she appears in an "instruction" video meant for Keiichi, and somehow stumbles out of it while Keiichi's watching, KO'ing him with her knee.
* ClapYourHandsIfYouBelieve: This is how Skuld makes all her gadgets. She doesn't really [[GadgeteerGenius invent]] stuff but instead [[RealityWarper wishes it into existence]]. It can only work because she is a goddess, even though she herself doesn't seem to be aware of it. Belldandy once constructed a superbike out of some random junk using the same kind of magic.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Belldandy, though what sets her off varies, and usually Keiichi explaining that something isn't what it looks like is enough to calm her down. After all, she trusts Keiichi completely, and Keiichi is not the kind of jerk who'd hit on other girls.
** When the Gate To Heaven asks Belldandy to continue [[WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove teaching her about love]], even though she had promised to help, she refused.
--->'''Gate:''' Now, then. Keiichi… teach me about ''romance'', you know?\
'''Bell:''' No.\
'''Gate:''' Why ''not?'' You said you'd do your best.\
'''Bell:''' I did. But not him.\
'''Gate:''' ''[-(with LuminescentBlush)-]'' You're one narrow-hearted goddess, you know?\
'''Bell:''' Yes. When it's about Keiichi… I ''am'' narrow-hearted.
** Skuld displays this trope towards Belldandy from time to time.
** In Chapter 57 (TV Episode 32), Urd utilizes this trope to help banish a demon that Shiho accidentally summons… by making [[PeoplePuppet Keiichi unwittingly]] [[ThanksForTheMammaries grab Shiho's chest]], causing Belldandy's built-up jealousy to explode and banish the demon.
* CloneDegeneration: Happens to a clone of [[spoiler:Urd]] at one point, when Mara duplicates her.
** Also, it was shown in ''The Adventures Of Mini Goddesses'' manga that making too many SuperDeformed copies of oneself cause them to look... [[{{Squick}} rather disturbing]].
* CloudCuckoolander: Tamiya and Otaki are a tad eccentric, with Tamiya coming up with some strange ideas for the Motor Club, and Otaki wearing spark plugs as jewelry.
** The latter can be seen as a case of CrazyPrepared, as the spark plugs are fully functional and it's been demonstrated that Otaki can fix most vehicles using parts he carries on him [[SexyCoatFlashing all the time]].
* ColourCodedEmotions: Belldandy can see Keichi's moods as colored auras.
* ComedicSociopathy: Despite Belldandy being perfect in a YamatoNadeshiko kind of way, she still manages to make Keiichi's life pretty miserable at times. And Skuld doesn't help, especially in ''Flights of Fancy''.
** In the TV series' first season, Urd seems to take great pride in "punishing" Sayoko and Aoshima, even though it only happens when Keiichi, Belldandy, or Skuld is threatened.
* ComicBookTime: Averted early on in the manga, where one real-time year of chapters really did equate to one year in-universe. After that, though, played straight. Over the course of the next 24 years IRL, about three years (if that) pass in the comic. It certainly goes a long way to explaining the ironic freeze in a relationship already bordering on marriage. Taken to its logical extreme at the end. The final 68 chapters – equivalent to 5½ years IRL – occur over the course of about one day in-universe… nearly all of ''that'' within a span of ''six hours''.
* ComicRolePlay: When Peorth has Keiichi pretend she's Belldandy so he can practice saying "I love you".
* CommutingOnABus: Most of the Nekomi Tech characters following Keiichi's graduation. [[TheBusCameBack Most of them put in at least one more appearance afterwards, though]].
* CompellingVoice:
** Belldandy does it to Aoshima in both the manga and anime, and uses what was apparently the stun setting to stop Urd and Skuld from harassing Keiichi in the first ''Flights of Fancy'' episode.
** Urd also does it to Keiichi in her debut chapter of the manga, in an attempt to [[BlackComedyRape "further his sexual knowledge"]]. She does this again to convince him to buy a ring.
** Hild goes even further, being able to strike stark terror in a target's heart simply by glaring at them. Skuld got reduced to a crying wreck this way.
* ContemptCrossfire: Urd is held in contempt by both [[{{God}} the Almighty]] (because Urd is the AntiChrist) and by [[{{Satan}} Hild]] (because Urd is half-goddess, and this makes her noble and heroic and thus [[AntiAntiChrist not a proper harbinger of the Apocalypse]]).
* ContrivedCoincidence: The final arc of the manga takes place on a single day, it being Keiichi's birthday. [[spoiler:The main crux of the arc is resolved precisely because it's his birthday, as Belldandy's birthday present to him is what brings him out of Hagal's spell. It's unknown whether Hild had intended it that way, as she had no control of neither that, nor the fact that Hagal's coup would take place on that day to begin with.]]
* CoolBigSis: Urd, in the OVA and TV series at least (it [[CharacterDevelopment took her a while to really get there]] in the manga) to her sisters and Keiichi, and Belldandy to Skuld.
** Urd may be this to Skuld as well – while on the surface they fight ''a lot'', Skuld actually has a closer relationship to Urd than she does to Belldandy (despite being [[ClingyJealousGirl strongly attached to Bell]]). Urd and Skuld have shown they love one another, and Bell seems to feel left out of the relationship; she actually states that she feels jealous of their ability to feel strongly for each other.
** Peorth eventually became a secondary CoolBigSis in her later appearances after she stopped being a pseudo-antagonist… and while we're at it, Lind and Chihiro have shades of this trope as well.
* CoolBike: It's a Kosuke Fujishima series; this is par for the course.
** For starters, there's Keiichi's motorcycle, which appears to be a rare BMW [=RS54=] complete with a CoolSidecar.
** The custom bikes that Keiichi and Chihiro built for their training trip in the manga come to mind. Chihiro's was a Yamaha based sportbike with a big watercraft engine and over 100 horsepower (which is a lot for a bike), Keiichi on the other hand built a 3-wheeler based on a snowmobile with a light rear end that made it perfect for drifting.
** Then there's Belldandy's "emergency" bike that she magically assembled from bits of junked or crashed bikes on the highway. The final result looked more like a high end Bimota or Vyrus (complete with hub-center steering) than something made from bits of other bikes.
* CorrespondenceCourse: Shiho learned how to be an exorcist this way.
* CrazyJealousGuy: Urd's ex-boyfriend Troubadour. When they were dating he'd make insects crawl out of the bodies of any man who flirted with her, and tried the same thing on Keiichi.
* CreepyCrossdresser:
** The "cheerleaders" for the Auto Club.
** The "Queen Sayoko" arc has [[spoiler:a group of Belldandy's admirers disguising as her to scare Keiichi - with the dress, ponytail and everything]]. As for their appearance… [[{{Gonk}} let's say they won't be winning any beauty contests anytime soon]].
* CrossPoppingVeins: Several characters show these from time to time.
* CrotchGlanceSexCheck: When Velsper reincarnates as a cat, it's through this that the group realizes that "he" reincarnated into a "she".
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Mara spends most of the later chapters being ineffective and acting as comic relief whenever she tries anything against the goddesses. However, this seems to be due to her being an [[PunchClockVillain old friend]]. When she and Hild were threatened by [[spoiler:a monster from Hell sent by Hagall]], she demonstrated that she was a force to be reckoned with and was able to defeat her attackers easily (the only reason she got hurt was due to the sheer power of her own spell).
* CursedWithAwesome: Urd angsts a lot over being half demon early on. But she's the only one who can use both holy and demonic powers.
* CuteClumsyGirl:
** Chrono. Very much. [[spoiler:Peorth actually relied on Chrono's clumsyness to get her job done: Breaking the rhythm orb.]]
** Lind [[LadyOfWar of all people]] is hilariously clumsy when it comes to [[spoiler:getting restoration magic right.]]
* CuteMute: The angels never speak. But they sure are cute, especially Noble Scarlet and Lind's twin angels.
** They can apparently ''cry'' though, considering Holy Bell's reaction when Sayoko (under the influence of a demon that removed her ability to trust) [[YourCostumeNeedsWork called her a cheap special effect]].
* CutenessProximity: Chihiro is a sucker for anything cute ([[BerserkButton don't call her out on it, though]]).
* CutShort: The TV series was not renewed after ''Flights of Fancy''. However, it did resolve most of the plot arcs it set up just in case that happened. The first season had done the same.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Episode 25 of Season 1 focuses on Urd, while episode 26 focuses on Skuld.
** Sora Hasegawa gets this in Episode 17 (and gets a fairly long arc in the manga).
** Otaki of all characters gets a focus story in Episode 31 (manga Chapter 6).
* DeathGlare: In the anime's first season, Belldandy's aforementioned CompellingVoice toward Aoshima was accompanied by one of these.
* DefeatingTheCheatingOpponent: Aoshima sabotages the Motor Club's vehicle for an upcoming race, and hires a ringer for his car. K1 and Belldandy win anyway, knowing that Aoshima cheated, thanks to the unique feature of their vehicle being a three-wheeler and knowledge of a feature of the race course which allow them to come out on top.
* DefeatMeansFriendship:
** After being defeated by Belldandy in Chapter 9 (Episode 6), the Earth spirit haunting Megumi's apartment promises to look after her when the goddess restores his connection to the Earth. He delivers on it later when Mara possesses Megumi in episode 16, and warns Belldandy about the possession.
* DemonicPossession: The Lord of Terror arc. See the BodySnatcher trope for more information.
* DemotedToExtra: Most of the NIT-based characters after Keiichi graduates, with Chihiro taking their spotlight since he and Belldandy started working for her at that point. In the anime, this happens to them during ''Flights of Fancy'' – while most of them are still seen around, and some get an episode or two that focuses on them, for the most part most of the arcs are centered around the goddesses and Keiichi.
* DeusSexMachina: Urd tries to invoke this trope in her introductory chapter, telling Keiichi that he has to have sex with her in order to repair/recharge the system force, and that if he doesn't have sex with her, Belldandy will have to return to heaven. He almost goes through with it until Belldandy comes in and reveals it was a trick.
* DidWeJustHaveTeaWithCthulhu: Given that gods and demons are all {{Eldritch Abomination}}s in human form (though not all their true forms are equally terrifying), the whole series is this.
** In Hild's first appearance, everybody is told that she is the ruler of all demons, and the first thing she does when she appears is hug everyone. This whole scene in the anime is made all the more amusing by having extremely ominous music in the background at its start, and still plays when she's hugging Skuld and flirting with Keichi.
** In one ''Flights of Fancy'' appearance, she sleeps with Keiichi. However, it's obvious it's an attempt to MindScrew with Belldandy.
* DistractedByTheSexy: Urd turns the tide of a softball match by showing up in a uniform two sizes too small without a bra, destroying the focus of the all-male team she and the rest of the cast were playing against.
* DivineDate: The main plot of the series.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Lampshaded in the manga when the embodiment of the Gate to Heaven asks Keiichi to unlock her -- by inserting a huge key into a keyhole ''on her torso''. He protests, "It's so big! Long! ''Hard!'' How would it ''fit?!''" and Urd remarks, "Do you have ''any'' idea what you sound like?" Highlighted by the way Gate blushed and smiled when she made the request, the fact she was magically infatuated with him at the time (Urd and possibly Peorth's fault), and her, ummm, ''moaning'' as he put it in. ''[[MsFanservice Peorth and Urd]]'' were ''blushing'' as they watched while Belldandy had one of her jealousy outbursts.
** Skuld in the Niflheim arc, Mokkurkalfi points out that Skuld's [[spoiler:Super Banpei]] only has two arms, while hers has three, to which Skuld responds "Ewww"…
** The [[spoiler:energy-draining machine]] makes Belldandy all blushy, gaspy, and sweaty, besides its intended effect.
** And then there was the time Urd was granted first-class goddess powers for a limited time. The effect of the "release" was… [[TheImmodestOrgasm pretty easy to interpret]].
* DoNotTauntCthulhu: Subverted. Hild lets Urd get insulting because she's her daughter. If you're not Urd, then [[EvilIsPetty don't push your luck]].
* DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnFemale: Discussed. In Chapter 45 of the manga, Mara finds Megumi to force a DealWithTheDevil on her. Megumi screams for help and accuses Mara of rape, to which Mara responds that since she is a woman, no one will believe her.
* DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnMale:
** In Urd's debut chapter, she wanted to have sex with Keiichi with the supposed intent of spicing up [=K1=] and Bell's love life. It didn't work, though, and her further attempts [[ShipperOnDeck to bring the two together]] were less objectionable.
** In Peorth's debut arc, she attempted to seduce Keiichi several times with the intent of satisfying his carnal desires. However, she really pushed the limits of common decency when she slipped a "love drop" in Keiichi's drink to get him aroused – a rough equivalent of slipping someone a date-rape drug. Fortunately – and unfortunately – for Keiichi, the plan [[EpicFail backfired in the most incredible way possible]]…
* DrunkOnMilk: Belldandy gets intoxicated by drinking soda.
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: Belldandy's eyes get this way a few times in the TV series, such as the episode where Hild uses time travel to steal Keiichi or the time Belldandy walks in on Keiichi [[ComicRoleplay practicing]] saying "I love you" with Peorth.
** A much more serious example happens to her in TheMovie, [[spoiler:as shown in a flashback when witnessing her mentor Celestine rebelling against Heaven and getting arrested leaves her in a completely catatonic state, which is only cured by erasing those events from her memory.]]
* DynamicEntry: Hild is on the receiving end of one of these a couple of times. Usually done by a goddess, from orbit and with the speed of light. She always parries them with ease.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:E to M]]
* EarCleaning: In two episodes of ''Flights of Fancy'' Keiichi gets this treatment; once by Belldandy... and once by Hild.
* EldritchAbomination: Demons and Goddesses in their true forms, Mokkurkalfi shows hers to Keiichi, and it's barely describable. No wonder they always appear in human forms.
** However some trippy imagery that is shown [[spoiler:during the long-overdue kiss]] suggests that while Belldandy definitely isn't human, she isn't scary either. [[spoiler:More like a being of overwhelming affection.]]
* ElegantGothicLolita: Hagall dresses in this style.
* ElementalPowers: Belldandy: [[BlowYouAway Wind]], Skuld: [[MakingASplash Water]], Urd: [[PlayingWithFire Fire]] & [[ShockAndAwe Lightning]], Peorth: Earth (Usually through [[GreenThumb plants]]), Lind [[spoiler:and temporarily Keiichi]]: [[AnIcePerson Ice]]. On the demon side: Hild: Lighting & Wind, Mara: Fire & Wind, and the manga features Halval who has [[CastingAShadow darkness]]-based powers.
* EnemyMine: [[spoiler:In the beginning of the Niflheim arc, Hild and Mara are forced to team up with the goddesses to restore the balance disrupted by Hagall.]]
* EquivalentExchange:
** The Law Of Conservation of Happiness. Granting too many happy wishes in a short span of time means that someone has to suffer a bit of bad luck, as Keiichi learned the hard way when an intoxicated Belldandy started granting the wishes of every poor soul in town.
** Also one of the rules of wishes granted by demons. They ''could'' destroy the world, but the price is steep enough that no human would likely be able to afford it.
* EvenEvilHasStandards:
** Hild wants to increase the demons' stock share on Earth, but she follows the agreement to never kill goddesses, though she did once show no problems beating up her own daughter, albeit non-lethally.
** Mara's own schemes sometimes makes her wonder if she's going too far, such as when she rigs Belldandy's goddess license to make her a demon instead, or when she splits Urd's demonic and goddess halves into two separate bodies. During the Lord of Terror arc, when Urd sets Fenrir loose on the city, Mara asks if she's maybe going "a little ''too'' far?"
* EverythingSoundsSexierInFrench: English manga translation only. Peorth – who in the original speaks extremely refined Japanese – peppers her speech with random French words and phrases. The intros in the Studio Proteus individual issues {{lampshade|d}} this, saying she "Occasionally speaks in French 'cause it sounds cool."
* EverythingsLouderWithBagpipes: The opening sequence of the second anime has Belldandy playing the bagpipes.
* EvilCostumeSwitch:
** Keiichi does when he is possessed in the movie.
** More prominently both Urd and Keiichi get this during the Lord of Terror arc when possessed. Keiichi's hair even grows longer and is dyed blond in the manga and TV series. However, when the Lord of Terror is defeated and is expunged from Keiichi, his hair remains long but goes black and Keiichi is surprised at what he is wearing. In the anime his hair reverts to being short as well.
** [[spoiler:Belldandy]] also gets this in the 20-year anime anniversary special, as well as [[http://gateway.cjb.net/AMG/Gallery/Bell/bell-v25c161.jpg on one occasion in the manga]].
* EvilPlan:
** Hagall runs a pretty clever one against Belldandy. [[spoiler:And seeing how the plan absolutely had to be stopped, it's safe to say Belldandy really WOULD have become a demon this time.]]
** The Lord of Terror. After Belldandy shoots the jar with an arrow, it seems he's defeated, but then he reveals that this [[BatmanGambit was all part of a complicated plan to escape from the jar in the first place]]. Cue everyone looking confused, even Urd.
** When Urd wonders if Hild had trained Hagall and her posse specifically to overthrow her to create a loophole into demon law that would allow her to reset her term as Queen of Hell (and prevent her own death while at it), Hild doesn't really admit it but is very proud of her minion's work anyway.
* ExactWords: How Belldandy and Peorth – both Goddesses First Class – are able to get around the ban on lying. They can't tell a lie, but they certainly don't have to tell the whole truth.
* FaceOfAThug: Tamiya and Otaki look mean and intimidating, [[NoIndoorVoice and they are incredibly loud]], but they are actually the softest teddy bears at Nekomi. They are [[{{Whipped}} absolutely terrified]] of Chihiro, their senior who is less than half their size, and she occasionally makes them serve as her personal slaves. They boss Keiichi around, especially early in the manga, but it's clearly shown to be a Senpai/Kohai thing rather than anything personal. Even when they unceremoniously throw him out of the dorm after Belldandy shows up, they claim it's nothing personal and [[LawfulStupid they're just following the rules]].
* FacialMarkings: All goddesses (plus some demons and spirits) have markings on their cheeks. More powerful ones – including all of the major non-human characters – have symbols on their foreheads as well. These symbols can change in extreme circumstances — when Belldandy breaks her seals during the Lord of Terror arc, her elongated diamond becomes broken with a circle in the middle of it (her cheek markings change too). In that same arc, Urd's upside-down purple triangle splits and changes color to a broken red "V", similar to Mara's facial markings. During the Niflheim arc, Urd finally allows her demon side to take over, and her forehead symbol changes to a five-pointed star (similar to her mother's six-pointed star).
* FacelessMasses: Done in the second episode of the TV series.
* TheFairFolk: Morgan [=LeFay=], in TheMovie.
* {{Fanservice}}: This series is notable for ''not'' having a lot of it, especially for its genre, and what of it there is is tastefully done. The chapter splash pages (and the anime promo art) have more fanservice than anything in the story itself. On the other hand, if [[TechnologyPorn detailed imagery of rare cars and motorcycles]] counted as this trope, this series would be borderline {{Hentai}}.
* FertileFeet: Belldandy does this in ''Fighting Wings''. Lind grows a flower in her hand, so it might be a common trait.
* FightingFromTheInside:
** Whether through demons or [[UnwantedAssistance well-meaning goddesses]].
** Keiichi is the victim of MindControl quite often, yet always tries (and usually manages) to resist it.
** The TV series indicate this for Urd during the Lord of Terror arc.
* FingerGun: Hild does a variant of this in one chapter. She puts her finger to her head in a gun shape, shouts "Bang!" and then collapses. She does it to extract a [[BodyToJewel crystalized fragment]] of herself out of her body.
* {{Flanderization}}: A side-effect of the series running for 25 years and adaptations being made at different points in the manga's long run.
** Skuld is considerably brattier in the TV series than she is in the manga or OVA.
** Keiichi becomes progressively more squeamish around women beginning around the time Peorth shows up. As mentioned above, this was doubly-justified: first by his father being even ''worse'', and also by [[spoiler:the System Force actively suppressing his desires.]]
** Belldandy is considerably more naïve in the anime than in the manga. To a lesser extent, this happens within certain eras of the manga as well.
** Mara was, upon her arrival in the series, a legitimate threat and often posed a problem to the main cast. But she became progressively less dangerous and more pathetic with each arc she appeared in (see ButtMonkey above). The anime takes it even further, exaggerating her failures and making her somehow even dumber.
* FoeRomanceSubtext:
** Hild. With the entire cast. Including [[{{God}} the Almighty]], with whom she had a daughter.
** Hagall with Belldandy since [[spoiler:Her plan is designed to turn Bell into a demon.]]
* ForgottenFirstMeeting: This happens in the OVA continuity. Its final episode revealed that there was one between Keiichi and Belldandy – he forgot, she didn't.
** ''Flights of Fancy'' did this via CosmicRetcon – Hild manipulated time, travelling back a few years into the past to seduce Keiichi before Bell could get to him.
** Kosuke Fujishima (original creator) and Hiroaki Goda (director of the OVA, movie, & TV series) once claimed this trope applies to [=K1=] and Bell in '''all''' continuities. However, Fujishima seemed to have changed his mind by the time the manga ended, since although Bell is shown to have been watching [=K1=], they never actually met before he made the phone call.
* AFormYouAreComfortableWith: Mokkurkalfi tells Keiichi that, even though she looked human, it wasn't her true form. She then proceeded to show him what she really looked like, effectively scaring him witless. She also reminds him that the Goddesses aren't showing him their true forms either, and the only reason they appear human is so people don't feel alienated from them. This causes Keiichi to jerk away when Belldandy tries to calm him down, but she acknowledges the issue and tells him he's not wrong to fear her ''power''… so long as he never fears ''her''. Keiichi is able to continue on and decides he doesn't really care what Bell may really be, because he loves her for who she is, not how she looks.
** There are also points that show that goddesses and demons seem to have an actual preference for human forms (i.e. vanity), in addition to not wanting to terrify every human that they meet.
* FountainOfYouth:
** After the system crashes following the Lord Of Terror arc, Urd regresses into a child (as Skuld [[OvernightAgeUp becomes]] [[SheIsAllGrownUp an adult]]).
** During the "Demon Child" arc, Velsper cast such a spell on Peorth as she tried to apprehend him. Unlike everything else, [[ModeLock she does NOT return to normal at the end of the arc]]; it takes no less than [[{{Satan}} Hild the Demon Queen]] to get Peorth back to her old self.
** Velsper then used the same spell on Belldandy (he was aiming for Keiichi), but Bell reverted to normal once she [[SayMyName remembered his name and broke his curse]]. However, judging by a later exchange between Keiichi and Peorth, Fujishima might have {{retcon}}ned this one away. [[note]] Keiichi states in Vol.21 that when Velsper tried to kill him with the time-rewinding spell, it hit Peorth rather than Belldandy, thus conflating the two attacks. Peorth does not dispute it, suggesting either a {{retcon}} is in effect… or Fujishima forgot the details of his own story.[[/note]]
* FriendToAllLivingThings:
** Belldandy, to the extent she can speak with animals, plants, and inanimate objects.
** Keiichi is this way to [[WalkingTechfix antique devices]], as pointed out by Belldandy herself, rather dramatically.
* FriendsRentControl: Played with. Keiichi definitely couldn't afford the rent or mortgage on a place like his...but he doesn't have to. It's a run-down Buddhist temple that the old monk left him and Belldandy, and Belldandy used her magic to fix the place up for him.
* FromRoommatesToRomance: Keiichi accidentally wishes for Belldandy to always be by his side, so they end up living together and fall in love over time. [[spoiler:They get married at the end of the manga.]]
* FunSize: Urd and Belldandy can do this on a whim. So can Hild.
** This is the point of ''Anime/TheAdventuresOfMiniGoddess''.
** Belldandy splits off a SuperDeformed offshoot of herself after the Lord Of Terror arc (episodes 25-26 of the TV series) so her main body can recover after using a lot of her power to fix the damage around the temple and city from the Lord of Terror arc in the previous episodes.
** Bell does it again during Keiichi's race against Keima. She wanted to join Keiichi but circumstances left her stuck at home.
** Urd splits into multiple little-Urds on several occasions, like in Volume 27 when she, Skuld, and Peorth are trying to track down a possessed Keiichi.
* GRatedSex:
** The scene where Noble Scarlet, Skuld's angel, first appears (though it's more like "G-Rated Childbirth"). Almost a cross between DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything and VerySpecialEpisode.
** Keiichi's sexual fantasies are so absurdly lame and comical at times, they qualify as G-Rated Sex-Fantasies. [[spoiler:Justified due to the Ultimate Force suppressing his sexual urges; when released from it, his fantasies are rather explicit]].
* GadgeteerGenius: Skuld. Fitting as she is the Norn of the Future.
* GenerationXerox:
** Keiichi is a dead-ringer for his grandfather Hotaru-no-suke back in the 30's. However, everyone other than Bell who sees Chieko's photo of HNS agrees that [=K1=] is nowhere near as handsome.
** Megumi looks exactly like her mother Takano, but with shorter hair.
** Urd looks ''a lot'' like her mother, Hild.
** Ansuz and Hild do get along, but they love to fight each other and get into each others' throats for the sake of it, just like their daughters Skuld and Urd.
* GenderBender: Keiichi in one arc, originally titled in English as "Miss Keiichi". Actually spends most of the arc as essentially a guy with breasts and long hair, but does briefly become completely female.

* TheGlomp:
** Tamiya does this to anyone who signs up for the Motor Club. Most applicants quit immediately.
** Peorth glomps Keiichi every time she sees him during her appearance arc. She stops once she realizes he'll never leave Belldandy (and starts to actually respect him).
** Hild does three glomps in a row in her first appearance. Immediately after she arrives she glomps Urd, then Belldandy and Skuld at the same time, then Keiichi.
* GodzillaThreshold: Removing the [[PowerLimiter seals]] of the goddesses while on Earth – it's noted that any carelessness with that level of power could result in massive damage, up to TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt. Belldandy removes hers only when the Lord of Terror threatens complete universal cessasion of existence.
* GoldenMoment: On at least two occasions in the manga, and one in ''Flights Of Fancy'', when Belldandy feels like less of a goddess ([[GreenEyedMonster like the Shiho Sakakibara chapter/episode]]), Keiichi is usually there to comfort her and justify her feelings.
* GoneHorriblyRight: Anytime Mara utilizes Urd's demon half, who then wants to do [[EvilerThanThou even more evil things]] than Mara. Such as in the Lord of Terror arc, or the "Devil In Miss Urd" arc (where Mara successfully splits Urd's goddess and demon sides).
* {{Gonk}}: Tamiya, who arguably looks weirder ''after'' the ArtEvolution.
* GoodAllAlong: [[spoiler:Hagall and her posse take over Hell and thoroughly humiliate Belldandy, but it's all for Hild's sake, who turns out to be their idol.]] Fans of this series should have seen this coming a mile away.
* GratuitousForeignLanguage:
** In this case Old Norse. Unlike her sisters, ''Verþandi'''s authentic name changed dramatically when expressed in Japanese phonemes, but was apparently well-liked and English-sounding, so it was kept in.
** It's also implied that Urd, mistress of oddly-convenient but seemingly useless skills (such as the ability to ride a unicycle), can speak multiple languages (conversing in English in the early manga), and demonstrates herself of being capable of saying the word "love" in more than a dozen languages.
** Senbei, Mara's pet genie, is prone to spectacular abuse of this. While in the Japanese dub, he [[LargeHam chews the scenery with]] GratuitousEnglish, Kevin T. Collins's take in the English Dub has him foppishly dancing from every fancy-pants European accent, from French to Italian, in two sentences flat.
* GroupIdentifyingFeature: FacialMarkings for Angels and Demons, usually the most visible one is on the forehead / between the eyebrows. But they have one on the top of each of their cheekbones. They're a symmetrical pattern.
* GuileHero: Keiichi's not endowed with magical powers or insane physical strength; he's just DAMN clever, and he is NOT afraid to prove it to defend the people or goddesses he loves.
** Example #1: When fighting an opponent who sees sound and can knock you out, what do you do? (1.)Have Belldandy put up a barrier while you think (2.)Drop the barrier and have Belldandy split to make the barrier better, and act as a distraction for #3. (3.)Have the magical vacu– Errr. "broomstick" that breaks the sound barrier attack the demon. She can only see the afterimage of it, so by the time she's seen the broom, it's moved on to another spot. She was blind and couldn't fight it and, unlike the goddesses, that broom aimed to kill with each shot.
** Example #2, In Hell, they have to fight a demon who can PUNCH OUT LIGHTNING in order to advance to the next room. Keiichi's solution? Have Urd make him a super-speed pill so he can trick said demon into punching the door out of existence for them by goading her into attacking him while he stands in front of the door; then, when the pill takes effect, BOOK IT out of the way. The Demon later asks him what he would've done if the door didn't break, and he calmly replies that "If the door didn't break, it would've broken your fist, so either way, we'd have won". Needless to say, she's impressed with him, even admitting he bested her like a good sport instead of making snarky remarks like the last demon he outwitted.
* {{Hammerspace}}:
** Skuld can apparently hold multiple bombs larger than a fist, remote controls, and anything she feels like shoving under her shirt without showing any bulges or wrinkles. In the Niflheim arc, it's even lampshaded when she pulls out tools from a seemingly never-ending supply, searching for bombs until she realizes that she's out somehow. [[spoiler:But we learn later that she did have one in reserve with a blast range of 3000km.]]
** Again in the same arc, Belldandy pulls a full picnic basket out of nowhere after Keiichi says he's hungry.
* HandmadeIsBetter: In the anime series, Belldandy hand-knits Keiichi a sweater for Christmas. Meanwhile, Urd uses magic to accomplish the same task, while Skuld uses a machine to do so. Sayoko gets a high end sweater crafted by a skilled artisan. In the end, it is Belldandy's carefully hand knitted sweater that Keiichi ends up appreciating.
* HandsOffParenting: Keiichi and Megumi's extremely eccentric parents seem to be strong believers of this method. And whataver you do, don't refer to them as [[BerserkButton "mom and dad"]] if they can hear you.
* HappilyMarried: Keiichi and Belldandy at the end of the manga. And TheMovie. And the OVA. Sensing a pattern?
* HarmlessVillain:
** Sayoko sooo wants to be TheRival, but unlike the other antagonists, she really doesn't have enough power or a mean streak. She once says she would sell her soul to best Belldandy, and when Mara calls her on it, Sayoko responds with "figure of speech". The only character she can be regularly mean to is Aoshima (her smarmy cousin).
** Mara herself fails at everything she does largely because of how stupid she is. Not so much in the manga, moreso in the anime where most of her competence is AdaptedOut and her failures are [[{{Flanderization}} exaggerated]].
* HeavenlyBlue: Belldandy, Lind, and Ansuz; all three manage to incorporate blue in their designs.
* HeroicSacrifice: Belldandy and Keiichi attempt one for each other during the Lord of Terror Arc. Keiichi even protected Skuld from being possessed by the arc's namesake at one point.
* HighTechHeaven: The realm that the goddesses come from is shown to be very high tech, despite the fact that the goddesses also use magic. In fact, the "real world" is actually being run by Yggdrasil, this universe's Almighty being's supercomputer that connects all living things. In addition, one of the three main goddesses, Skuld, actually prefers to use advanced technology over magic, partially due to her young age as she has not yet fully developed her magic like her older sisters Belldandy and Urd. But it also works thematically since the goddesses are actually stand-ins for the Norns from Myth/NorseMythology and Skuld is the Norn of the Future.
* HilarityEnsues: Peorth appears, and Keiichi has [[OhCrap a hilarious reaction]] ("Don't tell me... I summoned... ''another'' one..."), as he knows he has enough trouble with [[WithFriendsLikeThese Urd and Skuld]].
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Anything Sayoko and Peorth try to one-up Belldandy or steal Keiichi away always fails, and often ends up embarrassing themselves in the process.
* HonestAxe: Shown to Keiichi in Chapter 289, though with a bard and his harp instead of a woodcutter and his axe. [[spoiler:This turns out to be ChekhovsSkill three chapters later when the Lake Goddess, half-crazy with grief over the death of her mortal lover the bard, throws the dull axe into the lake, asks ''herself'' which axe she dropped into the lake, and as a reward for her own honesty, gives herself the "exceptionally sharp axe".]] And [[RuleOfThree repeated with even more importance]] when [[spoiler:she appears to Keiichi after his motorcycle is destroyed during the Almighty's time-trial.]]
* HookerWithAHeartOfGold: Peorth, in a roundabout way. She even states in her original introduction (Ch.66) that she's in charge of fulfilling the carnal/earthly desires and that she's the best at it in her agency.
* HotBlooded:
** Otaki and Tamiya would like to think that they're this. In the OVA, the name of the Nekomi Motor Club motorcycle drag racing team is "Team Burning Gutsy".
** Urd is fiery and passionate in everything she does, much to the annoyance of Skuld - [[TooMuchAlike who isn't much different herself]].
* HotAsHell: Hild. And technically Hagall when she [[spoiler:usurps Hild's position as ruler of Nifelheim]].
* HowDoIShotWeb: Skuld struggles trying to use magic and summon her angel. [[spoiler:Urd states that the fact Skuld screws up the most basic water spells proves just ''how insanely powerful'' Skuld can be.]]
* HumansAreSpecial:
** A chapter of the manga has one of the BridgeBunny goddesses visit Earth and go into raptures on tasting "Earth's famous soft-serve ice cream!" (They don't have ice cream in Heaven? Then what's the point of going there?)
** For that matter, Peorth returned to Heaven with a lot of games and comic books she'd picked up during her stay on Earth, and was asked ''not'' to do that again, because so many of the other goddesses were distracted from their duties. Apparently humans can create entertainment the deities just can't match.
** A more heart-rending example is in TheMovie; see PatrickStewartSpeech below.
* HumanOutsideAlienInside: Urd uses alcohol as an "alternate energy source", but seems to suffer no deleterious effects. Skuld is the same with ice cream. Belldandy can [[NeverGetsDrunk drink a distillery and be completely unaffected]], but gets blitzed off of soda.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy:
** Belldandy explicitly states this regarding Keiichi, although luckily for her she never gets the chance to prove it because it turns out his happiness requires her being around.
** Through a bit of lunacy, Sayoko ended up with the sweater Belldandy knitted for Keiichi. Though she wanted to toss it into the river, she instead handed it to him and demanded he wear it back to his home, knowing Bell was looking for it.
** Velsper nearly shattered the universe to meet Belldandy again. When she remembers him, he automatically undoes the damage he did, and allows Keiichi and Belldandy to stay together.
** Stringfellow eventually agreed to bring Keiichi (who he sees as a rival for Belldandy's affection) to Chihiro's shop because Belldandy wants him to.
* IceQueen: [[SugarAndIcePersonality Lind]] is a mild case but she still uses ice-magic.
* IdiosyncraticCulturalGesture: In the OVA series, when Keiichi is trying to find a place for Belldandy and himself to stay after he's kicked out of his dorms, one of his friends refuses, holding up his pinky finger, an indicator he had a girlfriend over and didn't want extra company.
* IfWeGetThroughThis: Parodied in Chapter 244 when Lind notes that she would like to try on Peorth's {{Stripperiffic}} outfit after they finish dealing with Hagall's demonic invasion. Peorth then replies that mentioning this trope will always result in a tragedy in the end if "Earth movies" are of any indication. Lind brushes it off by saying that that rule doesn't apply to them since they're not from Earth.
* ILoveYouBecauseICantControlYou: Two examples, Aoshima towards Belldandy, and later Sayoko towards Keiichi.
* ImmortalImmaturity: Skuld can occasionally venture into BrattyHalfPint territory, particularly in the TV series and earlier in the manga, though it's somewhat excusable given that she is, by deity standards and despite her intelligence, still a child. Urd is the oldest of the Norns, but she often isn't much more mature than Skuld is.
* ImprobablyFemaleCast: Par for the course for a Fujishima title. Sort of. While there are plenty of men in the human cast, Heaven and Hell seem almost entirely populated by fabulous women… although there are male deities seen moving in the background from time to time. Also Velsper and The Almighty. The top echelon of Niflheim, Hild's (former) underlings, are an AmazonBrigade.
* IndirectKiss: Invoked by Keiichi in regards to a can of tea he shared with her while she was under the influence of one of Urd's love potions (which had been botched by Skuld).
* InformedFlaw: Keiichi's status as an UnluckyEverydude and "Loser" seems greatly exaggerated by modern anime/manga standards. Yes he's short, poor, plain, had bad luck with women, and is quite the doormat, but one of the major points of the manga is that he's got a lot of HiddenDepths that explain why Bell would stay with him. He's shown considerable courage, fortitude, and intelligence on many occasions. Despite this, he can't say a simple "I love you" to Bell (not without [[UnwantedAssistance too much help]] from third-parties, that is).
* InstantIllness:
** In OVA 1, "Moonlight & Cherry Blossoms", when Keiichi brings Belldandy to the abandoned temple, he gets a fever and faints immediately. Understandable since it's winter, he'd been driving a motorcycle in the rain, and he took off most of his clothes to try and keep Belldandy warm.
** This happens to Belldandy in both the manga and anime during the story where Keiichi temporarily becomes a girl.
* InstantRunes:
** Particularly obvious, in TheMovie.
** Rather averted in the manga, where putting together powerful wards and spells takes a lot of time and the efforts of all three of the main Goddesses (and sometimes Keiichi). It's actually a big deal when Hild plays this trope straight – she's ''that'' powerful.
* InterspeciesRomance:
** Keiichi is a human and Belldandy is a Goddess. However, as a demon proves to Keiichi (who nearly [[GoMadFromTheRevelation goes mad from the revelation]]), just because someone ''looks'' human does NOT mean they are.
** Urd is the product of one – her demonic mother Hild and [[spoiler:Tyr the Almighty]].
** Urd herself was involved with Troubador, the manifested spirit of a plum tree.
** Skuld (also a goddess) develops feelings for Sentaro (also a human) throughout the series.
** The Lorelei will sing a song to attract mates; when Keiichi got water in his ear and began hearing their song, the head Lorelei didn't really seem to mind that Keiichi is a human and she isn't. Likewise, the male Lorelei show little regard to species and hit on Skuld because of a few off notes in the song.
* IntimateLotionApplication: The second [[OriginalVideoAnimation OVA]] has [[BeachEpisode Keichi take Belldandy to the beach]] as part of a [[ShipperOnDeck plan set up by Urd to bring the former two closer together]]. Urd gives Keichi a sunscreen that's infused with a LovePotion to put on Belldandy, and when he's about to, nervously, put some on her, Sayoko interrupts him and spills the bottle's contents.
* IntoxicationEnsues: On one occasion, Belldandy gets into a drinking contest with Chihiro (Sayoko in ''Flights of Fancy'', who had to be taken away by paramedics) and [[NeverGetsDrunk doesn't so much as burp]]. When Keiichi gives her a can of cola for her (non-existent) hangover. However, Belldandy remarks on how delicious it tastes… and then, you bet HilarityEnsues.
%%* JackassGenie: Demons delight in twisting wishes.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold:
** Sayoko Mishima. At first she seems like your standard RichBitch, but it turns out there's a lot more to her (which the anime loves pointing out) – sure, she's rich and popular, but she's also very lonely because no one ''actually'' likes her for who she is; boys just fawn over her because she's hot and has money. She holds a grudge against Belldandy because she (incorrectly) believes that Bell is trying to destroy her, but she's capable of genuine kindness and comes to see Keiichi as probably her only friend. After Keiichi rejects her advances, she's visibly moved when [=K1=] and Bell come to visit her and bring her a meal. She's also willing to give Keiichi advice about living together with Belldandy.
** Keiichi's seniors generally take advantage of him and make unreasonable demands (and they look like bullies), but they actually back him up when he's settling into his new place, and offer to name his future kid.
* KamehameHadoken: Prior to the Mystery Child arc Belldandy's wind attacks tend to be depicted this way instead of the standard gusts of wind. She used this in Chapter 28 to save Keiichi from a truck and against [[spoiler:Lord of Terror!Urd's]] HumongousMecha several chapters later. It is a high density air sphere.
* KarmaHoudini: Belldandy regularly uses her powers to help Keiichi win various contests, sporting events, etc.; she's more focused on making him happy than on fair play.
* LadyDrunk: Sayoko drinks a lot whenever something bad happens to her, which is often.
** Megumi gets smashed whenever a boy dumps her… which has happened multiple times (though only the most recent time was shown).
* LandingInSomeonesBathtub: Reversed when Skuld comes ''out'' of Urd's bath while she's in it.
* LargeHam: Senbei (usually with GratuitousEnglish), Tamiya and Otaki on occasion, Troubadour. Even Hild tends to be overly dramatic.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: [[spoiler:Celestine suppresses Belldandy's memories of Keiichi in TheMovie.]]
* LastDayOfNormalcy: The first season of the anime greatly expands on showing Keiichi Morisato as an UnluckyEveryman who, despite being TheChewToy for the universe in general, is still kind, earnest, and dilligent. Then a wrong number while trying to order takeout brings a literal goddess, Belldandy, into his life.
* LethalChef: Sora Hasegawa. In fact, her nickname was once "[[{{Pun}} The Chef Assassin]]".
* LimitedWardrobe: Most characters besides Belldandy, Urd, and Skuld only have two or three outfits, especially in the TV series.
** Keiichi has all of three outfits: his jeans, white t-shirt, and leather jacket; his racing gear; and that green-&-yellow-striped suit. He has another outfit in the movie.
** Subverted with Peorth, who cycles through different goddess outfits within her introductory arc. She eventually settled on the black leather crop-top and black bikini bottom at the end of the arc, which she keeps for the rest of the series.
* LittleMissBadass: Skuld gets a couple moments like this: in the Dream Castle arc, again in the Lind arc, and in TheMovie where she manages to wound Morgan in the arm.
* LoveBeforeFirstSight: [[spoiler:In Chapter 293, Bell tells Kei she has been watching him (as part of her job) most of his life, and was in love with him before they ever met.]]
* LoveEpiphany: Two examples.
** Skuld has this happen thrice. First when she develops feelings for Keiichi after the Lord Of Terror arc[[labelnote:†]] (during her temporary age-up: Episode 26 of the TV series)[[/labelnote]], then again after she "intercepts" [=K1's=] love confession to Belldandy[[labelnote:‡]] (the confession happens in Episode 18 of the TV series, but the date itself is partly incorporated into episode 26, [[OutOfOrder and both happen much later in the manga]])[[/labelnote]], then it happens yet again after she starts spending a lot of time with Sentaro.
** Sayoko slowly starts to realize her feelings for Keiichi over the course of the early manga (throughout the first season of the TV series, culminating in Episode 28 [-{''Flights of Fancy'' Ep.2}-]).
* LoveHotel: In a go-all-out attempt to finally get Belldandy and Keiichi in the same bed, Urd forces the couple to hide in one of these with the help of a rainstorm. [[spoiler:Belldandy STILL doesn't get it and Keiichi just buys an umbrella instead.]] [[ShipperOnDeck Urd and Peorth]] abandon all hope at that point.
** Earlier, however, Aoshima took Bell to a love hotel with not-at-all-honorable intentions. Bell knew exactly what the building was but evidently not its purpose. When Aoshima tried to make his move on her, he got blasted out the window for his trouble.
* LoveObstructingParents:
** Urd and Skuld, probably manga's {{Ur Example}}s of the "overly enthusiastic" and "utterly opposed" versions, respectively. In the TV series, Urd is actually fairly low-key, only rarely trying to push Keiichi and Belldandy together, while Skuld is much more active about running interference.
** [[spoiler:Belldandy's ''actual'' parents play this straighter still. Her mother is the arbiter overseeing her daughter and Keiichi's interspecies romance trial, though she insists she's just doing her job. Her father, after they pass said trial, refuses to accept the results, and demands Keiichi perform a miracle[[labelnote:•]] (Keiichi must complete a ludicrously difficult race on his motorcycle in 3 minutes, with only three chances)[[/labelnote]] before he will accept their being together.]]
* LovePotion: Urd loves making these.
** In an early chapter, Urd brews one with the intent of tricking Keiichi into taking it to speed along his relationship. She ends up accidentally swallowing it herself.
** Peorth, during her introductory arc, tries to give Keiichi one that would make him fall in love with her. However, she screwed it up and it instead made every woman who saw him instantly fall for him. Including Skuld and his little sister.
* MagicalGirlfriend: Belldandy definitely in the OVA, early manga, and most of the first season of the TV series. Elsewhere, it depends on your definition of "girlfriend".
** Skuld eventually becomes a puppy version of this trope to Sentaro. He may or may not be aware of her true nature though.
* MagicMisfire: Skuld can't seem to get anything ''else'', but the other sisters have gotten their share.
* MagicMusic: Spells can be cast through singing. Also, playing Midgard's Flute is the SummonMagic for the eponymous counter to Fenrir.
** Apparently, the wordless tones heard in the anime are the programming language in AFormYouAreComfortableWith, since Hild speaks of the reunification spell having "verses" rather than "movements".
* {{Magitek}}: The universe is controlled by a magic computer, and spells are often referred to as "programs".
* MagicVersusScience: In the more literal sense – anytime Keiichi fights something supernatural, he can usually weasel his way to victory using his keen intellect and/or science.
** More than likely a type 2 (Magic is Cheating) because magic lets a deity/magical being alter the "program" of reality. Despite this, demons and goddesses can use regular physics and science just as well. Thrym knows a lot about musculature and how to relax tensed/overtaxed muscles. Skuld regularly designs machines that do things for her a mundane spell could accomplish. (more like Type 1)
* TheMagicVersusTechnologyWar: Daily quarrels between Urd and Skuld usually turn out this way, with Urd representing Magic and Skuld representing Technology.
* MagneticGirlfriend: More literal than usual. Most of the girls that turn up are supernatural beings that end up there ''because'' Belldandy is living with Keiichi. Except for Sayoko, who only became interested in him because Belldandy was upstaging her.
* MarriageBeforeRomance: Keiichi Morisato encounters a goddess who will grant one wish to him. He wishes that she stay with him forever. As far as the universe is concerned, from that point on, the two are effectively married. They couldn't leave one another if they tried. In the process of finding a place to live and domestic life they fall in love.
* MarshmallowHell:
** Hild gives one to Skuld in her first appearance, under the reasoning that Skuld reminds Hild of the kid's [[AmicableExes father]].
** [[spoiler:The one time when Belldandy ends up wearing something more {{Stripperiffic}} than usual due to an EvilCostumeSwitch the opportunity is used to hand Keiichi a quick dose of ''marshmallow heaven''.]]
* MasterOfIllusion: Hagall can project illusions into her opponent's mind that [[YourMindMakesItReal become real to them]].
* MaximumFunChamber: One chapter of the manga has Skuld going to great lengths to hide a misdemeanor from Urd out of terror of a "terrible punishment" The punishment turns out to be [[spoiler:being forced to repeatedly build devices that do nothing useful.]]
* MayflyDecemberRomance: Keiichi and Belldandy's relationship is this. He's the mayfly.
** Peorth reluctantly admits this truth to [=K1=] when he asks, but he replies that he already knew; he just needed confirmation. This leads to Keiichi admitting a major concern of his (and prime stumbling block in his relationship with Bell) – when he dies, Belldandy will continue living, unable to let go of his memory.
** Inverted prior to the above revelation. Many times early in the story, Keiichi won't more persistently pursue his relationship with Belldandy because he's extremely loss-averse and is both afraid of her returning to Heaven ''and'' of her not being willing to return once she has to. This fear turned out to be justified in the OVA (but only there), when Bell ''was'' forced to return.
** [[spoiler:The final trial of their relationship is Yggdrasil forcing them to confront the inevitable consequences of a Mayfly-December Romance. As part of the trial, they saw for themselves what happened when time caught up to a similar couple. The goddess essentially self-destructed after her mortal lover died.]]
* MexicanStandoff: During the Rubber Band War in Chapter 173, Peorth, Urd, and Skuld manage to get into one of these. Broken off when a helpless Keiichi tries to join in, only to have his toy gun hopelessly outclassed by Skuld's ''tank'', Urd's ''[[FightingSpirit conjured slingshot warrior]]'', and Peorth's ''railgun''.
* MidAirBobbing: Urd in particular likes to do this. Peorth often does it too.
%%* MiddleOfNowhereStreet: Nekomi.
* MindControlEyes:
** Belldandy, in the movie. Also briefly in the manga after she has a demonic familiar implanted in her (she quickly overpowers and purifies it though).
** Keiichi, in all continuities, whenever he gets put under divine or demonic influence -- Urd's potions, the influence of the Demon-God of Poverty, etc.
* MindReformatDeath:
** At the end of the "Lord of Terror" arc, the eponymous character is defeated by Belldandy and Skuld, when Belldandy starts to draw the Lord of Terror out of Keiichi's body, and Skuld surreptitiously presents a floppy disk for them to transfer their consciousness to. Subsequently, Skuld erases the floppy disk with a strong magnet.
** Happens to Banpei once. While developing him, Skuld gives him the ability to self-program to become sapient, and later gives him a battery pack. Unfortunately, on his first adventure out into the world, his memory seems to be volatile, as his battery pack runs out, and his sapience programming is lost, despite Skuld's efforts to retrieve it.
* MirrorCharacter: Urd and Hild can sometimes come off this way. So can Urd and Skuld.
* MistakenForGay: Tamiya and Keiichi talked about Peorth (on whom Tamiya had developed a crush) in secret. This is interpreted by said goddess as "those two are into each other".
* MomentKiller: ''Just'' when you think Keiichi is going to admit his deep love for Belldandy (or vice-versa)…
* MookChivalry: Invoked. There are various instances where both goddesses and demons are limited to performing or countering only one spell's attack at a time. For instance, the Angel Eater can only target one angel at a time, and Hild, the most powerful demon shown, is utterly incapable of countering a simultaneous attack from five demons (though they are the most powerful demons in Hell under Hild). This is one of the reasons Mara is pegged down a few levels, as her crippling weaknesses were gradually revealed early on and she finds them insurmountable. However, beings that do not use incantations to fight (like Lind) have considerably wider resources available and have more freedom to fight barehanded, though it's fair to say that Lind sucks at incantations in turn.
* MotorcycleOnTheCoastRoad: The second ending credits of the TV series has Keiichi doing this.
* TheMovie: Came out in 2000, and served as an effective end to the OVA and/or later TV series. The manga continued for another 14 years, but elements from the film found their way into the manga's climax.
* TheMovingExperience: One chapter of the manga had Sentaro announce that his family was moving to another prefecture, forcing Skuld to confront her feelings for him before he leaves. [[spoiler:Then it turned out that Nekomi is right on the prefecture border, and his new home is right on the other side of the same border, so he's still close enough that he can bike over and visit on occasion.]]
* MumLooksLikeASister: Hild looks to be the same age as Urd, and Ansuz is the same with Belldandy. It's perfectly undertandable because they're all immortal. What's completely inexplicable is why Takano doesn't look any older than Keiichi when she's completely human, ''[[EpilepticTrees or so we're told...]]''
* MundaneUtility: How does a goddess use her RealityWarper magic? Why, she cleans up and refurbishes a run-down temple into a decent house!
* MundaneWish:
** When Tamiya unintentionally summons the demoness Mara, who offers him a wish, he thinks she's an ordinary human who snuck in and tells her to "get the heck out". She tells him that's an uninspired choice for a wish and then vanishes.
** When Peorth comes to grant Keiichi's wish, these types of wishes are the only ones he can think of – "Do my term paper", "Fix my bike", "Turn part of the temple into a bathhouse", etc.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:N to Z]]
* NavelDeepNeckline: Common from the supporting girls in the series.
** It's not at all surprising from [[MsFanservice Urd and Peorth]], or from Hild and Mara (the latter only occasionally). But, when ''[[InnocentFanserviceGirl Belldandy]]'' [[https://web.archive.org/web/20131114030954/http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/4939/belldandysurprise.jpg displays it]], the [[HeadTiltinglyKinky mind goes "Tilt"]].
** Most of Bell's later swimwear shown on the chapter title pages definitely counts. Bell also gains such an outfit when she's [[EvilCostumeSwitch temporarily possessed by a demonic familiar]].
** In the second episode of ''Itsumo Futari De'' (translated by one group as "Together Forever"), well, it's a BeachEpisode where the outfits of all goddesses have officially crossed into Stripperiffic territory. Cue full on Brain Crash.
* NiceGuy: If you read the synopsis above, then you'd know that if Keiichi ''wasn't'' one of these, there'd be no story in the first place. And many girls ''adore'' this genuinely NiceGuy, too. Having Belldandy around all the time works wonders on anyone's personality. Keiichi was a little crude early on in the manga, but that didn't last long once Bell started to gently steer him in the direction she wanted.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero:
** During the Lord Of Terror arc, Belldandy destroyed the Urn of Mao-za-Haxon[[labelnote:†]] (more correctly: ''Maoh za Hakushon'', a.k.a. "Demon Lord of the Sneeze")[[/labelnote]], unaware that doing so was precisely what would unleash the Ultimate Destruction Program on the world.
** Lind showed up while Keiichi and the goddesses were out and got into a confrontation with Hild, damaging the house. Then, although she admitted she wasn't any good at damage-repair magic, she tried anyway out of a sense of guilt. When the others came back and saw the ''distortion'' her attempted repair had caused, their horrified comments upset her a great deal. Especially since even ''Hild'' [[EvenEvilHasStandards said the demons had gone too far]].
** This trope also comes into play anytime Skuld or Urd executes a plan involving Keiichi and Belldandy, and the other one finds out about it and attempts to foil it somehow.
* {{Ninja}}: Kodama, Hikari, and Nozomi – tiny ninjas transformed from rats by Mara.
* NinjaMaid: Chrono, an assistant goddess who happens to be a candidate for the Valkyries, is sent to earth by Peorth to deliver an item for Belldandy, whilst wearing a maid outfit.
* NoblewomansLaugh: Expertly used by Urd and Sayoko. They even manage a ''synchronised'' one in the anime.
* NoCommunitiesWereHarmed: Nekomi is not a real city in Japan. However, it's generally accepted to be somewhere in [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiba_Prefecture Chiba Prefecture.]] (that's the little peninsula east & southeast of Tokyo, on the other side of the bay)
** Averted with the Morisatos' hometown, Kushiro, which is a real city on the southeast coast of Hokkaido.
* NoIndoorVoice: In the manga, Tamiya is almost always drawn yelling.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Eihwaz is a demon that looks like a small girl and only seems to serve as a guide during the Nilfheim arc. She really loves karaoke. She is also Hagall's [[TheDragon right hand]] and very good at playing evil mindgames.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: Keiichi finds himself in these situations frequently. The unknown variable is how Belldandy responds.
** When Kodama (a ninja girl who came to kill Belldandy) slipped into [=K1's=] bed and he didn't notice until right before Bell came into his room. He insists this trope is in effect, and Bell accepts it without hesitation.
** On the other hand, shortly thereafter, when Shiho gets extremely clingy with Keiichi and he protests, Bell's response is to unconsciously induce a jealousy storm.
** In TV Episode 11 [-(adapting manga Chapter 45)-], this happens when Mara (possessing Megumi) and Senbei set Keiichi up. In the anime version, all three times, Bell begins a jealousy storm but Keiichi talks her down by invoking this. In the manga, it only happens once; Keiichi still says this, but Bell agrees by insisting that [[ComicallyMissingThePoint he'd never have the guts to do anything like that]].
** When Keiichi is practicing saying "I love you" with Peorth (with the ultimate intention of working up the guts to say it to Belldandy), Bell walks in on them, gets a case of DullEyesOfUnhappiness, and walks away. Like the Kodama incident, she eventually accepts Keiichi's explanation in the end.
* OddballInTheSeries: The "Rainy Day" episode of ''Mini-Goddess'' is completely different from the wacky comedy typical of that series. It follows Urd going out for a walk during a [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin rainy day]] with no dialogue and lots of SceneryPorn.
* OhCrap: Done by everyone (save the Almighty One) at least once.
** Hild gets a rapid series of these when [[http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/1578/hildohcrap1.jpg Belldandy]] [[http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/7600/hildohcrap2.jpg asks]] a favor. Her expression when she pops out from beneath the manhole cover is especially funny.
* OlderThanTheyLook:
** Sora Hasegawa. College student. Looks like a junior high schooler. Reminding her of this is her BerserkButton.
** Keiichi's mother Takano. Does she look old enough to have college-age children? Her husband looks ''his'' age (if not perhaps even older than his age due to his white hair).
** Chieko Honda jokes about this when she admits that she's a ''shinnentai'' from the early 1930s.
** As part of Fujishima's early ArtEvolution, his art style throughout Volume 5 (that's ~2½ years into the series) makes ''everyone'' appearing in said volume look 5-10 years younger than they are. Special mention goes to Skuld, whose first appearance is in this book; she looks like she has a 5-year-old's face grafted onto a 12-year-old's body.
* {{Omake}}: "The Adventures of the Mini-Goddesses" – random 4-panel comics that occasionally showed up between chapters throughout the series, featuring everyone super deformed, abusing Gan-chan the rat. Spawned its own series of anime shorts.
* OneWingedAngel: Lind has a literal example; her angel Spearmint has only one wing. Turns out [[spoiler:she has a second angel, Cool Mint, who also has only one wing (it's the one Spearmint is missing). However, the trope itself is averted because neither exhibits the typical traits of this trope, due to being actual angels.]]
* OnlySaneMan: Keiichi and Urd often feel like this, sometimes mutually.
* OntologicalMystery: Volume 36 of the manga, following some mass amnesia.
* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent: College rather than high school, but Keiichi, Megumi, and Sora all count.
* OurDemonsAreDifferent: They're the native denizens of hell, acting more like AnotherDimension than an afterlife-{{Hell}}, and as such aren't evil outright. Their FacialMarkings are either red or purple, instead of heaven's blue.
* OurGhostsAreDifferent: Discussed. Chieko Honda, the housemaid from the old inn, is dead and has been for some time, but she's not a ghost; she's a Japanese spirit called a ''shinnentai''. Belldandy spends a page explaining the difference to Keiichi. A ''shinnentai'' can take physical/corporeal form and interact directly with people.
* PatrickStewartSpeech: Belldandy gives one to Celestine near the end of TheMovie.
* PerpetualMolt: In both TV series.
* PervertAlliance: A very bizarre example involving a group of girls acting in what they believe is the interest of a male. Urd, Peorth, and Skuld are all trying to prove that they are capable of granting wishes in an unofficial contest. Seeing Keiichi respond to the sight of a woman's skirt being blown up by the wind, they all try to accommodate what they believe is his desire by casting spells to make the wind flip up girl's skirts for him. Unfortunately, their spells get intertwined, turning Keiichi into the wind itself. Thankfully, Belldandy is able to restore him.
* PetalPower: Peorth's Storm of Roses attack in the anime, though in the manga she uses whole roses instead of just the petals.
* PetTheDog: Sayoko, unlike her {{jerkass}} cousin Aoshima, is capable of being a decent person whenever she feels so inclined. Mara, despite her DesignatedVillain status, has been shown to have her nice side as well. Hild is even shown to have a soft side.
* PhlebotinumBreakdown: Yggdrasil may maintain reality, but it has no shortage of problems.
* PhysicalGod: Most of the main cast.
* PillarOfLight: Happens whenever a particularly powerful being – Lind, Hild, etc. – descends to Earth.
* PimpedOutDress: [[spoiler:Belldandy's Wedding Dress is indeed fancy.]]
* PlotInducedIllness:
** In the OAV, after Keiichi brings an unconscious Belldandy to the abandoned temple, he collapses from a fever and wakes up with his [[LapPillow head in her lap]].
** In the "Miss Keiichi" arc, Bell suddenly falls ill without explanation. It was Keiichi's attempts to help her that led to the "Miss" part of that title. [[note]] The TV series inverted the events (part of its trying to synthesize a more coherent story arc than the manga had), with Skuld slipping Keiichi a potion that turned him into a girl, ''then'' Bell getting sick as the result of a botched attempt to cure him.[[/note]]
* PokeThePoodle: In the anime, one of Mara's attempts at villainy was knocking a couple of kids' ice cream on the ground, after which, they kick her in the shin.
** In ''Flights of Fancy'', [[spoiler:when Mara and Hild have a scheme that causes Belldandy to be registered as a demon and tell her she has to do evil or Keiichi will suffer, all she can think of is jaywalking, reading a book without paying for it, and writing chalk graffiti, on a chalkboard. They probably would have dropped the idea if they saw any of it. They ''do'' get a little return on their investment – Belldandy hooks a person up with some serious mind-bending and other illicit substances and leaves them crying in despair on a park bench in the night rain. Being Belldandy, she's doing it to herself because she can't bear to do it to anyone else. And, this being Belldandy, she is actually getting drunk on Cola.]]
* PornStash: Kept in the back of Keiichi's third desk drawer. Every recurring character in the series knows about it. They love mentioning it to embarrass him.
* PowerIncontinence: If an unprepared Goddess eats an Angel's Egg, there's a good chance that the angel will run out of control upon hatching. Fortunately averted with Skuld.
* PowerLimiter: Goddesses' powers are sealed on Earth by use of jewellery (most of Belldandy's immense power is contained through her earrings and bracelets), and the amount of power needing to be sealed directly correlates to amount of accessories worn. Hild, the demon queen, wears a ''lot'' of jewellery.
* ThePowerOfLove:
** Keiichi and Belldandy's combined admiration for one another is part of what pacified Celestine at the end of TheMovie.
** The love of a goddess is the source of an angel's powers, this is also why [[spoiler:Keiichi is able to temporarily support Lind's angel; he'd received the love (romantic and otherwise) from multiple goddesses.]]
* PragmaticAdaptation: The TV series, particularly the first season. Whereas the manga [[GrowingTheBeard took a few years to find itself]], the anime didn't. It took full advantage of 15 years of story and art evolution to fashion a more coherent narrative, in part by shuffling around relevant chapters from the first quarter-ish of the series but also adding in a few key character-building bits that simply didn't exist in the manga.
** For one example, to justify the events that set everything in motion, the first episode establishes Keiichi as a mistreated NiceGuy rather than just an UnluckyEverydude, a trait that isn't apparent in the manga at first.
** In the manga, it's first revealed that [[spoiler:Urd is half-demon]] in the Lord of Terror arc, which begins in manga Chapter 34, but we don't learn about [[spoiler:Urd's angel, World Of Elegance]] until Chapter 89. The latter is moved to episode 21 in the anime, and the Lord of Terror arc begins the very next episode, turning the [[spoiler:World Of Elegance]] plot into an effective [[TheReveal "reveal episode"]] of sorts.
*** Holy Bell, Belldandy's angel, first appears in the spontaneous duel with Peorth in manga Chapter 71. In the TV series, Belldandy has Holy Bell help her restore Tariki-Hongan Temple in Episode 3, explaining the importance of angels early and justifying the aforementioned adaptation involving [[spoiler:Urd, her half-demon heritage, and World Of Elegance]].
** Belldandy's jealousy storms don't appear in the manga until Chapter 57, where they're a plot point. The TV series hints at them ''much'' earlier, during Episode 11 (when Senbei forces Keiichi into several NotWhatItLooksLike situations). The adaptation of Ch.57 itself does not occur until TV Episode 32[[labelnote:•]] (a.k.a. ''Flights Of Fancy'' Episode 6)[[/labelnote]]. On this point, however, see AdaptationInducedPlotHole above.
** Sora Hasegawa is never given a proper introduction in the manga – she just appears in Chapter 45[[labelnote:•]] (TV series Episode 11, the part where Keiichi walks in on her changing)[[/labelnote]] with characters already knowing her name and acting like she'd always been there. The TV series fixes this oversight by establishing her in the first episode (via CutawayGag) as the Motor Club's only female member, then revealing her name and giving her lines in Episode 2.
** Lind – and by extension the concept of Valkyries – first appears in the TV series during the Lord Of Terror arc (a.k.a. Season 1's climax). At the time, Lind had only recently debuted in the manga[[labelnote:*]] (specifically in Ch.155, at the very end of Vol.24)[[/labelnote]]. Introducing her early allowed for even more dramatic tension than the manga had. Her existence also set up a narrative bridge into Season 2. Plus, once ''Fighting Wings'' was finally animated, Lind didn't just appear out of nowhere.
** The English dub of the OVA cuts out the middleman regarding Keiichi's wish – in that version, he tells Belldandy explicitly, "I want you to be my girlfriend forever!" rather than the more vague (though more accurate to the Japanese) "I'd like for a Goddess like you to stay by my side forever." So Keiichi and Belldandy are not only a full-on OfficialCouple from the start, but it's implied that [[spoiler:after the finale, ''they got married''.]]
* ThePratfall: This happens a lot to Keiichi.
* PrettyFreeloaders: Belldandy's sisters, Skuld and Urd. Occasionally Peorth too, and Lind (briefly) in the manga. Averted by Keiichi's sister Megumi during her brief stay at the temple upon her initial appearance -- she shows up with cash (and crates of food, in the TV series) in hand.
* PsychoticSmirk: Demons, being demons, tend to show off frightful smirks.
* PunchClockVillain: Mara. It's heavily implied that if she wasn't contractually required to be an enemy, she and Urd would be VitriolicBestBuds. Has even been prone to EnemyMine on several occasions.
* RageAgainstTheHeavens: In TheMovie, Celestine, [[spoiler:though Belldandy talks him out of it.]]
* RedOniBlueOni: In Chapter 40 (TV Episode 14), Skuld and Megumi have a robot-building contest. Skuld wears red and Megumi wears blue (as do their respective fans), which reflects their temperaments.
* RedundantRomanceAttempt: Keiichi's attempts to work up the courage to kiss Belldandy cause him to heat up. Belldandy misinterprets this as a fever and tries to "cure" him with her magic.
* RemakeCameo: Several in the English dub for ''Flights Of Fancy''.
** Peorth is voiced by the actress who played Belldandy in the OVA series, which makes Peorth's Belldandy impression during her introductory episode doubly hilarious.
** Similarly, Urd's voice actress from TheMovie returned to play Hild, and Urd's VA from ''Mini-Goddess'' played resort maid ''shinnentai'' Chieko Honda.
* RhymeThemeNaming: Belldandy's older and younger sisters, Urd and Skurd, have similar names. They also share similar personalities, unlike [[OddNameOut Belldandy]].
* RichBitch: Sayoko, though the "bitch" part is inconsistent. Aoshima is a played straight all the time male example.
* RoboCam: When showing Banpei's point of view. Sigel too, though not as often or obviously.
* RockMeAsmodeus: Inverted with Mara, who can't help but dance until she drops whenever she hears rock 'n roll.
* RoofHopping: Belldandy does so, but with telephone poles. She did the standard version at least once in the manga, when she was afraid Keiichi might accidentally get dosed with one of Urd's love potions. (This was also the first time it was shown that Urd is terrified of Bell getting ''really'' angry.)
* SacredFirstKiss: When the Gate -- who looks like a young girl -- forces Peorth, Urd, and Skuld to kiss her as part of her quest for [[WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove knowledge]], Skuld moans that she hadn't even kissed Sentaro (a mortal boy in whom she's shown significant interest) '''yet'''. And yes, the inclusion of that last word was remarked upon by Urd.
* SameContentDifferentRating:
** The original (flipped) English version of the manga was rated "Ages 8 and up", whereas the (unflipped) edition is rated "13+". There are only three considerable differences between the two – The format, the number of references to Japanese culture (the right-to-left version has more, plus some honorifics) and the crudeness of the wording… If anything, the original was more crude than the newer versions.
** Part of this is probably that bookstores/publishers don't think young children could handle a "backwards" book and multiple foreign references; most of the rest is likely because the original editions came out before the manga publishers standardized their age ratings.
* {{Satan}}: Hild, though she seems like less an ultimate evil and more an annoying trickster. Which is in line with the Norse mythology that the series borrows so heavily from. The Norse didn't have a Satan; they had Loki, who was… an annoying (and malicious) trickster.
* SceneryPorn: Fujishima has made many detailed, awe-inspiring scenes of everything from Nekomi Tech festivals to Tariki-Hongan Temple (Keiichi and Belldandy's home), drawn in a fusion of art noveau and shoujo-manga style.
* SchmuckBait: [[AC:Angel's Egg. Do not touch! Skuld: This means YOU!! Thou shalt not even LOOK at it!]] …It's even placed on a nice little pedestal in the middle of Urd's room. [[spoiler:It takes Skuld only five seconds to EAT the thing.]]
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveMoney: Sayoko and Toshiyuki both invoke this at different points for different (albeit similar) reasons.
* ScrewTheRulesIMakeThem: Chihiro has been known to take control of Motor Club activities on the strength of sections of the club rulebook that don't exist… yet.
* TheScrounger: Early in the series, Otaki was referenced as being one, producing rare motorcycle parts out of nowhere. Keiichi took advantage of this at least once.
* SeriesContinuityError: The second season, ''Flights of Fancy'', kinda forgets that Keiichi and Belldandy had already gotten together at the climax of the first.[[note]] The producers and director clearly weren't certain the TV series would ''get'' a second season, so the original 26 episodes told a reasonably complete story. When the second season DID happen, a ResetButton of sorts was required in order to adapt earlier manga chapters that had been skipped over for streamlining purposes.[[/note]]
* SettingUpdate: The TV series updates the setting from the late 80s-early 90s to the 2000s due to it debuting 16 years after the manga began. A lot of the cars look far newer than the ostensible setting of the adapted chapters. Fashion trends are altered to look more like the 2000's, so no big fluffy EightiesHair for the ladies. Also, there are 2000's-era cellphones; Sayoko owns one… meanwhile, Tariki-Hongan Temple still has a classic rotary-dial phone.
* SexByProxy: In Chapter 290 Belldandy and Keiichi are overshadowing another goddess and mortal who fell in love. Judging by the last panel on page 23, the past couple were lovers. Which means Bell and Kei are lovers, by proxy.
* SexualEuphemism: Calling sex, "This and That" is used by Urd in the "instructional" video she gave Keiichi (in the English dub, it's "[[RuleOfThree this, that, and the other thing!]]") in TV Episode 8.
* SexualKarma: Keiichi gets a chance to meet Belldandy because his karma is so unbalanced; he's a very nice guy whose luck sucks terribly, requiring the Goddess Relief Agency to step in and balance the scales. [[spoiler: However, the "sex" part of this is subverted for a looooooong while, as magical circumstances keep the relationship stuck at a grade-school level.]]
* SexySantaDress: Urd wears one in the 2nd episode of ''Flights of Fancy''.
* SharedFateUltimatum: The doublet system between the Goddesses and Demons works this way by using a type of {{Synchronization}}. A Goddess and a Demon are paired, and then their memory erased of who their pair is with. Thus, neither side can kill the other, lest they kill an ally they care about, or even themselves, while trying to take out the opposition.
* ShipperOnDeck: Urd, Megumi, Chihiro, and (eventually) Peorth all ship Belldandy/Keiichi.
* ShipTease: Since Keiichi functions well as a part of a MoeCouplet, the manga has several chapters throughout that explore potential relationships with the other goddesses, including ''twice'' with Skuld. [[note]] The TV series combines Skuld's outings with [=K1=] into Episode 26, while simultaneously expanding [[SheIsAllGrownUp the story]] of her OvernightAgeUp.[[/note]]
* ShoutOut: Fujishima did this from time to time in the manga; the anime followed up with its own references, and then the English dub added onto those.
** A very early chapter of the manga showed a crowd of men, most of whom were caricatures of guys Fujishima knew. Notably, Creator/HideakiAnno is in that scene – he and Fujishima were friends back in the day. Coincidentally, the original English translator of ''Goddess'' bunked with the founders of Gainax (including Anno) around the same time.
** In Chapter 45, the 3rd Class Earth Spirit (who lived in Megumi's room as a rat) confronted Mara over her possessing Megumi. For his trouble, Mara transformed him into a plushie that bore more than a slight resemblance to Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog. As if the reference wasn't obvious enough already, he even [[CallingYourAttacks calls out "Super Sonic Attack!"]] when attacking Mara later. Regrettably, the TV anime (Ep.12) merely transformed him into a generic teddy bear.
** At one time in the manga the Lord of Terror threatened to [[Film/TheFly1986 fuse a shrunken Keiichi with a fly]].
** There's an explicit shout-out to the ''Series/{{Thunderbirds}}'' in a chapter when a species of sentient machines has a problem, resembling the premier episode "Trapped in the Sky". Keiichi actually tells Belldandy that he asked himself "What would the Thunderbirds do?" and his (successful) solution imitates theirs as best he can improvise.
** There's also one to ''Manga/MaisonIkkoku'' when Keiichi's mother visits for the first time. One of her guesses as to why Keiichi is living with a lot of women:
--->'''Takano:''' I got it! This place is an inn, and you're the resident manager. That one's Mrs. Ichinose, there's Yotsuya…\
'''Keiichi:''' What kind of story is that?
** In Volume 34, Urd was shown changing the TV's channel -- to ''Manga/SgtFrog''.
** Skuld is a ''Series/StarTrekTheNextGeneration'' fan; the TV in the family room is shown tuned to a TNG episode during one chapter of the manga, and she also owns a scale model of the ''Enterprise-D'' (shown in a splash panel in another episode in which she's throwing various junk around during a fit of anger).
** At least one of Tariki-Hongan's residents (probably Urd) is an ''Series/{{Ultraman}}'' fan, as we also see the TV tuned to an episode in another installment of the manga.
** During the Great Rubber Band War in the manga, Skuld escalates the battle by producing a rubber band '''mini-gun'''. At one point in her pursuit of Urd, her (expressionless) face becomes shadowed, and only one glowing eye can be seen. It's a pretty clear reference [[Film/TheTerminator to one of Ahnold's best moments]].
** When asked by Skuld why she wore such an uncool red mask, Mokkurkalfi answered that they got intel that wearing red masks and helmets made you [[Anime/MobileSuitGundam three times faster]].
** At the conclusion of the Judgement Gate arc, Ansuz the Inquisitor (a.k.a. Belldandy's mother) provides [[spoiler:a gift in the form of a purple treasure class formal dress. In other words, Belldandy got [[VideoGame/WorldofWarcraft an Epic wedding dress]].]]
** TV Episode 33 (''Flights of Fancy'' Ep.7) has this gem in both languages – Skuld has a {{chainsaw|Good}} which she affectionately names [[Film/TheTexasChainsawMassacre "Texas Murder"]]… and she wants to test it out on Keiichi, who is (in Skuld's view) too close to Belldandy yet again. Fortunately for him, Urd breaks it before it can be used, causing Skuld to cry, "[[PlayedForLaughs Noooo, my poor little Murder]]!"
** The English dub of TV Series Episode 1 has Tamiya conclude his repairs of a random student's moped with this:
--->'''Tamiya:''' "[[Series/PimpMyRide Your ride has now officially been pimped!]]"
** The dub also has this gem in the 2nd episode, when Keiichi keeps winning at mahjong (probably because Belldandy is standing right behind him):
--->'''Keiichi:''' "Well, what can I say? [[Music/FrankSinatra Luck be a Goddess tonight]]!"
* SilkHidingSteel:
** Lind, the polite and proper ''Valkyrie'' that works for the Almighty.
** Belldandy is so gosh darn nice that she appears to be silk but she is ''really'' sharp steel. Underneath her heavenly smile and gentle manners is a first-class goddess who is very firm on what she considers "acceptable behavior" in the shrine and around Kenichi.
* SingleTargetSexuality: Belldandy towards Keiichi. It takes [[FriendToAllLivingThings her]] a little while to figure this out, unfortunately for Keiichi.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: Belldandy and Keiichi's relationship is quite possibly one of the greatest examples of this wonderful trope.
** Women (and [[OvernightAgeUp girls temporarily turned into women]]) tend to respond better to NiceGuy Keiichi, compared to [[RichBitch rich asshole]] borderline rapist Aoshima.
** Even the bad girls (i.e. Hild) also seem to want Keiichi, though her attraction to him mostly seems to be because she wants to seduce him for fun… making Belldandy angry is a nice bonus.
** Works with Sayoko too. She [[GreenEyedEpiphany realizes]] that the genuinely NiceGuy she [[UnrequitedLoveSwitcheroo rejected earlier is the one she really likes]], rather than her superficial and self-centered courters. Regardless of what she tells herself, she isn't envious of Belldandy because she upset her status as the campus queen; she's jealous of Bell because Bell got Keiichi.
* SkinshipGrope: Done by Urd to Skuld at one point, with Keiichi hearing everything and misinterpreting it (apparently not by much). It's also done in a lighter form in the episode where Skuld temporarily becomes an adult; she brags about her now-curvy body, but is shot down by Urd affirming her status as the "big" sister.
* {{Slapstick}}: Mara and Sayoko are never safe from having a can of whoop-ass opened on them when the former's {{Zany Scheme}}s are exposed and fail; or when the latter goes too far in her bitchery. Usually a good [[ShockAndAwe electrocution]] at the hands of Urd.
* SoundtrackDissonance: When Hild first shows up, some sort of creepy music plays, and most of the characters being frightened of her… in contrast to Hild acting excited like an overbearing mother-in-law to meet the main characters.
* TheSpeechless: The goddesses' various angels. They can laugh, cry, and can [[MagicMusic vocally harmonize for the use of spells]], though.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS:
** Belldandy herself is one of the classic examples, owing to the Japanese publishers not being familiar with the myths. Properly, going by the mythology she's supposed to be "Verthandi" (or more correctly, ''Verþandi''). This is an understandable mistake, though; Japanese lacks both a "v" sound ''and'' a "th" sound, so the katakana of her name spelled out "Berudandi" as the closest equivalent. Even if someone ''was'' familiar with the myths but went into the series cold, they could miss it, since it isn't mentioned that she's a Norn until Urd comes along and makes it obvious.
*** The English translator of the manga was actually very familiar with Norse mythology and confirmed with Fujishima (before it was explicity stated in-story) that they are the Norns. However, he decided to go with the "incorrect" name anyway, writing an essay in one ''OMG'' book explaining the Norse trappings of the story, as well as justifying Bell's name.\
Essentially, "Belldandy", taken as a compound word, is evocative of both bells – generally "happy" instruments, rung in times of celebration and such; and "dandy" – an old-fashioned light-hearted adjective meaning "high-quality". That goes ''much'' further in describing the character than "Verþandi".
*** Translations of the manga in Scandanavia, on the other hand, restore Bell's name back to its Norse original. The Norwegian translator explained that, since people there ''do'' learn about their own ancient culture, using the official names would only confuse readers.
** A few others did this: Urd (correct name: Urð, or possibly Urdr), Lind vs Rind (correct name: Rindr), etc. Most of these are obvious if you actually check the Norse myths they're based on: The Japanese names are the nearest equivalents to the Norse ones possible given Japanese lacks some of the sounds.
** "Welsper" vs. "Velsper". The former spelling is the correct one, but because English (unlike every other Germanic language) still makes a clear phonic distinction between "W" and "V", Studio Proteus's translation opted to go with the latter spelling to make the pronunciation of his name obvious. This continued once Dark Horse took over the English edition.
** "Mara" vs. "Marller". The latter is the "official" Romanization seen on Japanese materials (and in the US DVD's subtitles). While some fans – mainly purists – use "Marller", the English translation of the manga and the English dub of the TV series use "Mara" instead. In a rare inversion of how this usually goes, it's the translators who got this one right; "Mara" is far more appropriate – "Marller" doesn't fit any known entity from any mythology, but Mara is both the name of a spirit in Norse legend who brings nightmares (sure enough, her first appearance is in a nightmare of Keiichi's) and the name of a demon who used his twelve daughters to tempt Buddha during his quest for enlightenment.
** The great ''Ah!'' vs. ''Oh...'' debate. This one was settled by [[WordOfGod Fujishima himself]]; according to Website/TheOtherWiki, and a snippet in Volume 2 of the unflipped English version, the title was due to the way the Japanese put the accent on "Oh" instead of "God" when saying "Oh my God!" in English. So it's two titles for the price of one: a GratuitousEnglish StealthPun in Japan, and its rough English translation is a straight-up pun. A literal [[{{Pun}} Worldwide Punomenon]] -- Works out nicely.
* SpitTake: In the anime's third episode, the mother of a little girl whom Keiichi helped out in the first episode treats Keiichi and Belldandy to lunch at a fast-food joint as thanks — when the little girl starts asking too many questions… and Belldandy [[CannotTellALie starts giving too many answers]].
** He does it again in the first episode of Season 2 when Belldandy compares Skuld and Urd with Keiichi and Megumi after the two goddesses get into yet another argument outside the temple.
* SpyCatsuit: When she's racing, [[InnocentFanserviceGirl Belldandy of all people]] prefers to wear really tight racing leathers. Her skintight battle outfit qualifies too.
* StatusQuoIsGod: The whole purpose of the System/Ultimate Force is to prevent changes in the relationship of our leading couple. Try to get between Belldandy and Keiichi, and '''watch out'''. [[spoiler:The System Force is actively suppressing Keiichi's libido and keeping his relationship with Belldandy stuck in neutral. Belldandy is okay with this because she'd rather have a boring chaste relationship than risk taking it further and lose Keiichi forever.]]
* StealthHiBye: The two motor club guys do this sometimes. Some of the goddesses and demons do this once in a while as well.
* StockSoundEffects: A non-public domain example. The OVA's sound effects come from Anime Sound Production's sound archives.
* StuffBlowingUp: Skuld relies on bombs before her magic develops. She also has a habit of putting self-destruct routines in her machines. She also just, in general, ''enjoys'' having this happen.
* SuperDeformed: Goddesses and demons can split into multiple, smaller copies of themselves, or simply just shrink themselves.
* SupportingHarem: There's never any question that Keiichi and Belldandy are the OfficialCouple, but that doesn't stop Skuld, Urd, and Peorth from being PrettyFreeloaders.
* SwirlingDust: Sort of -- all of Keiichi's possessions instead of dust.
* {{Synchronization}}: Angels and their host goddesses are linked to each other, and so do doublets.
* TakeAThirdOption: Urd manages to convince the tiny female ninjas to do this by exploiting LoopholeAbuse via ExactWords. [[spoiler:Ninja law says that upon disobeying a master's orders, they must either die or kill all in the clan who pursue them. When Belldandy defeats Kodama's pursuers, Urd realizes that the clan is in the room… so they all leave the clan (and Mara's employ) en masse.]]
* TechnologyPorn: Well, this ''is'' a Kosuke Fujishima series; lovingly detailed drawings of rare machines are par for the course. Seriously, if tech was assessed the same way as characters are, this would be a hentai manga.
** Keiichi attends a technological institute where he is a member of a racing club. And the world is [[Film/TheMatrix being run by the Almighty's computer]].
* ThemeNaming: [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamiya_Corporation "Tamiya"]], "Otaki", and [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hasegawa_Corporation "Hasegawa"]] are all manufacturers of plastic model cars, planes, etc.
* ThereIsOnlyOneBed: When Sayoko passes out after drinking and Mara takes her home for the night, HilarityEnsues when they wake up together and Sayoko assumes Mara took advantage of her.
* ThirdPersonPerson: Hagall has referred to herself this way a few times. The little girl Rina also does this.
* ThoseTwoGuys: Tamiya and Otaki, the heads of the Motor Club.[[note]] Officially, Tamiya is the club president, but given that he and Otaki are almost always together, it really doesn't matter.[[/note]]
* TheThreeFacesOfEve:
** Immature kid sister Skuld, who is the Norn of the Future and represents the Child.
** The calm, compassionate, and domestic Belldandy, Norn of the Present and represents the Wife.
** The flirty, fiery, half demon Urd, Norn of the Past and represents the Seductress.
* TimeShiftedActor: Creator/MegumiOgata voiced Keiichi's younger self in the fifth episode of the 1993 OVA.
* TimeSkip:
** TheMovie takes place years after the events of the OVA or TV Series.
** The final episode of ''Flights Of Fancy'' adapts a chapter of the manga that's ''much'' more recent than anything else that made it into the show. Ditto the ''Fighting Wings'' OVA.
* TimTaylorTechnology: Skuld does quite a bit of this, without considering the impracticality of having too much power in her inventions.
* {{Tsundere}}:
** Skuld may lean in this direction; she is generally bratty but her dere-dere side is brought out by Belldandy and Sentaro.
** Sigel, a "female" android repurposed by Skuld after her first robot, Banpei, fell in love with her (she even has [[GirlishPigtails twintails]]). In an interesting variation of this trope, Sigel developed sort of a BelligerentSexualTension relationship with Banpei after Skuld ''[[NiceJobBreakingItHero forgot]]'' to tune Sigel's mind to [[LoveAtFirstSight love Banpei at first sight]].
** Sayoko may also qualify. In the earliest chapters of the manga, she tried to get Keiichi into her hooks, solely to prove her superiority over Belldandy. Later, she settles down – when she finally had Keiichi wrapped around her little finger later in the series, what does she do? ''She returns the sweater Belldandy made for Keiichi'' (which she stole to keep Belldandy preoccupied) ''and tells him to wear it home''… without actually telling him she stole it.
* TwoScenesOneDialogue: One chapter has something along the lines of:
-->'''Hagal [-(in Nifelheim)-]:''' ''…and [[ThirdPersonPerson Hagal]] will become known as…''\
''(cut to Hild, on Earth)''\
'''Hild:''' ''"…the greatest Daimaikaichou ever!" I'm sure that's what she's saying right now.''
* UnexpectedGenreChange: Especially in the original manga, the series occasionally shifts from being a SliceOfLife [[RomCom romantic comedy]] to a fantasy adventure to a romantic drama.
** The Lord of Terror arc. Remember the previous chapter when [[BrattyHalfPint cute little Skuld]] showed up and [[ClingyJealousGirl immediately inserted herself in between Bell and K1]]? Yeah, sorry, putting that concept on the shelf for a few months; it's time to save the world.
** Many times – like in the "Dream Castle" and "Mystery Child" arcs – the series would do this but then SnapBack to its original format.
** The manga shifted for good in the Niflheim arc.
* UnknownRival:
** Belldandy towards Peorth, the former never thinks of the latter as such, which only ticks Peorth off more.
** Possibly Belldandy towards Sayoko as well, since the goddess never seems to have any ill will towards her despite Sayoko's attempts to break Bell & [=K1=] up.
*** In Episode 28 [-(''Flights of Fancy'' Ep.2)-] of the TV series, in a denouement that does not occur in the manga, Sayoko gets sick and tired of this trope and lays it all out there with Bell:
--->'''Sayoko:''' "Well, Goddess Belldandy, I just want you know… I hate your guts."\
'''Bell:''' "Even so, I will still love you, Sayoko."
* UnlimitedWardrobe: In the manga, Belldandy, Urd, and Skuld always wear different clothes on each day of story time. By contrast, Peorth's clothes stopped changing after they achieved maximum {{Stripperiffic}}ness. Also averted with Lind, who is only ever seen in her Valkyrie uniform.
** Belldandy's street clothes, particularly early in the manga, are pretty reflective of what a hip young girl in the late-80's and/or early-90's would wear. She later adopts more YamatoNadeshiko-style housedresses. Later still, she becomes more of a fashionista, particularly after she starts working at Whirlwind alongside Keiichi.
** This is actually explained in the manga (albeit as a small side note and not spoken by the characters). In a chapter where Banpei wants to go out while the others are gone, he looks for the goddesses' clothes but finds none, and eventually settles for Keiichi's. In a side note on the page, it is explained that the goddesses summon their clothes using magic.
* UnluckyEverydude: Keiichi was this early in the manga. Even Mara commented about him being unlucky in chapter 28, since he stepped into raw sewage and got a parking ticket without Mara doing anything. It took a while before he was really portrayed as a legitimate NiceGuy.
* UnresolvedSexualTension: No, the '''glaringly obvious''' between Keiichi and Belldandy isn't the only example in this series.
** Skuld seems to have feelings for Keiichi, and nearly acts on them when she has her temporary OvernightAgeUp (taken further in the TV series), and then again when her powers start to develop. It's probably not a coincidence that Skuld's later boy-friend[[labelnote:•]] (hyphen intentional)[[/labelnote]] Sentaro looks ''a lot'' like a young Keiichi.
** Tamiya and Otaki both have this with Chihiro.
** Sayoko falls in love with Keiichi, but by the time she realizes it, he's moved on to Belldandy. Doesn't stop her from trying to get him anyway.
** Peorth still likes Keiichi, despite doing her best to [[ShipperOnDeck get him and Bell to progress their relationship further]].
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: For all the insane things that happen in Nekomi, none of the locals seem to bat an eye. For instance, during the "Queen Sayoko" arc, when NIT is transformed into a whimsical castle, students and faculty outside it remark that it's about on par with that time the Engineering Club managed to put a bus on the roof… and then go back home satisfied that they get a day off.
** Averted with Banpei in Chapter 65 of the manga. He wanted to go shopping with Belldandy, Keiichi, and Skuld but the latter two didn't approve because they were afraid he'd attract unnecessary attention. What did Banpei do? Wear clone Urd's skin and Keiichi's clothes so that he can pass as a shorter version of Urd.
* UnwantedHarem: Keiichi definitely has one. However, not all the members of his harem are in love with him, and he'll '''never''' betray Belldandy (the only one who didn't show up uninvited). It's rather poignant, since anyone can barge into the temple at any point in time and abuse their welcome.
* UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans: Celestine in the movie. Hagall in the manga's Niflheim arc.
* {{Valkyries}}: Lind is one. Belldandy has the certification to be one. Chrono is a candidate to become one.
* VerySpecialEpisode: The one chapter/episode where Skuld gets and loses her angel has the feeling of a ''Goddess!'' version of a VSE involving [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything a teenage pregnancy]], and the baby being a preemie and dying. [[spoiler:Thankfully, Noble Scarlet returns during the manga's "Angel Eater" arc – adapted as the ''Fighting Wings'' OVA that followed ''Flights of Fancy''.]]
* VictoriasSecretCompartment:
** Where Skuld apparently keeps enough explosives to take down a battalion… despite being [[UsefulNotes/{{Pettanko}} flat as a board]].
** Belldandy, of all people. When [=K1=] stopped to think about holding an object that'd been stored ''there''… She tucks something back in there]], evidently to make sure Keiichi won't take it. That's a ''demon'' accusing her of being vulgar. [[spoiler:And then Keiichi [[ThePowerOfLove reaches in and grabs the item]] anyway. Belldandy was just as stunned as the readers because Keiichi never ever would have done this before in the manga's twenty year long run!]]
* VillainDecay:
** Mara gets hit by this in both the manga and TV series, but ''especially'' the latter. When she first appeared in the first season, she was able to give both Belldandy and Urd a hard time by herself, turning Keiichi into a scooter out of spite, and nearly succeeding at defeating Bell once and for all by using Sayoko's jealousy and ego to her advantage. Fast forward a bit, and she's working at the convenience store Keiichi and Bell used to work at (they gave her the job) and surviving on its takeout while living in a run-down building (an abandoned arcade in the manga), sleeping alongside her rat scientists. She's no longer able to even get into Tariki-Hongan Temple because Banpei guards it and can easily dispatch her. Urd even points out how big a failure Mara is, causing her to break down and cry.
** Welsper is an intentional example. After nearly destroying the universe during the "Demon Child" arc, he is forcibly reincarnated as a cat and retains only a fraction of his powers. From that point on, he's more an annoyance than any real threat.
* VineWhip: Peorth once used her vines as a whip when trying to help Keiichi overcome his CannotSpitItOut problem.
* VomitDiscretionShot: Happens to a drunk Sayoko on Keiichi when he tries to help her get up. He feels very icky about it afterwards.
* WeaksauceWeakness:
** Urd falls asleep if exposed to Enka music. Several antagonists make use of this weakness.
** Urd herself utilizes Mara's weakness (rock & roll music) against her in a similar fashion, which causes the demoness to dance uncontrollably. Banpei also used this against her, following up with much more effective rockets and later holy objects to get rid of her from the temple.
* WeddingFinale: [[spoiler:The final chapter ends with Keiichi and Belldandy finally having their wedding ceremony.]]
* WeirdnessMagnet: Keiichi. He attracts Belldandy, a literal goddess, into his life; then her half-goddess-half-demon sister Urd who attempts to bring them closer together; then her younger sister Skuld who attempts to break them apart. Later, even more supernatural beings come into his life, including [[{{Satan}} Hild, the sexy devil]].
* WhamEpisode: Two of them in the manga, within a year of each other.
** Chapter 275. Belldandy, on the brink of death, decides to [[spoiler:ask Keiichi to cancel their contract. He agrees, at which point she gives him a BigDamnKiss. Turns out that she gave him the Kiss Of Truth, the implications of which are in the very next bullet point. Since the source of a goddess's power is love (and theirs had been functionally stagnant) unbinding Keiichi meant she could sense the depth of his feelings and recharge in an instant.]]
** Chapter 285. After more than twenty years of the status quo, everything is turned even more upside down than before. The fandom, which is normally completely laid back, erupted in chaos when the contents of this chapter were revealed. The wham was just that big. [[spoiler:Hild drops the bombshell. Turns out when Keiichi made his wish, Heaven hacked his brain to eliminate even the slightest possibility of him desiring Belldandy sexually. And Belldandy knew it the entire time. In fact, every celestial character except Skuld learned about it at some point prior to this. The ''reason'' she didn't object was because interspecies relationships are banned and defying the ban brings down the Gate Of Judgement.]]
* WhatDoesSheSeeInHim:
** Everybody and their dog asks this about Belldandy and Keiichi, since she's '''way''' out of his league. Keiichi himself constantly muses about this – as far as he's concerned, he ''knows'' he doesn't deserve her. Bell, for her part, feels the exact opposite, often fretting that ''she'' doesn't deserve ''him''.
** Sweet ShrinkingViolet Sora Hasegawa has an unrequited crush on Toshiyuki Aoshima, the biggest {{jerkass}} in the series. No one can figure out why.
** In TV Episode 31[[labelnote:†]] ([[AdaptationExpansion a greatly expanded adaptation of manga Chapter 6]])[[/labelnote]], Aoshima cannot understand why pretty and demure Satoko Yamano quickly falls for Otaki, who is certifiably insane. [[spoiler:Turns out they have similar interests… and Satoko likes crazy.]]
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Near the end of the manga, [[spoiler:Holy Bell was ripped out of Belldandy by Hagall in chapter 275. She was shown to revert to an egg, but this was not shown to be recovered during the finale or the exit from hell]].
* WhatIf: The last 2 episodes of the OVA series are a retelling of manga Chapter 47, "Goodbye and Hello", where the main characters have to prevent Belldandy from being forced to return to Heaven. In the original, it was Urd.
* WhatTheHellHero: In the anime, when the bug infestation was intensifying due to Belldandy and Keiichi being together. Skuld unsympathetically tells Keiichi that it is for the good of the world if he were not to see Belldandy anymore. Sure she says this, but she also [[JerkWithAHeartOfJerk uses it as an excuse to break them up and bring Belldandy home]]. Urd angrily calls Skuld out on her childish selfishness, saying she doesn't seem to care if Belldandy will be miserable for the rest of her life, just as long as Skuld herself is happy. From one line, Urd effectively pointed out that despite being a scientific genius, Skuld is a stupid idiot when it comes to people's feelings.
* WhenSheSmiles: Lind becomes a lot less chilly and intimidating.
** The "Belldandy Smile"[[TradeSnark ™]] is a superpower in its own right, capable of melting glaciers.
* WhipOfDominance: When Sayoko and Aoshima are trying to uncover Belldandy's secret, they capture Keiichi and leave him to the mercy of S&M Club, who are all [[DressedLikeADominatrix dressed in dominatrix style clothing]], including whips. Ironically, the domineering [[TheTease Urd]] is the one who shows up to rescue him, and she quickly defeats the S&M Club members by stealing their whips and using them to whip them into obedient submission to her, to the point that when Aoshima finds them she's now [[DominanceThroughFurniture using them as furniture]], showing they were vastly outmatched by her in the domination department.
* WomenDrivers: Averted. Some of the best driver/riders in the series (Chihiro, Megumi, Belldandy) are women. In fact, the only male driver to get significant screen/panel-time is Keiichi.
** Sora's a fairly straight example, though, [[CripplingOverspecialization at least when it comes to anything other than a car]].
** [[HopelessWithTech Urd]] proves to be utterly incompetent at driving when she's forced to not use her powers.
* TheWorldTree: Yggdrasil in this case, happens to be the supercomputer that connects all living things and generally runs the universe. The demons also have their own version, Nidhoggr (named after the dragon that gnaws at the root of the world tree in Myth/NorseMythology.
* WrenchWench: Skuld, Megumi, and Chihiro are all skilled mechanics, Skuld supernaturally so.
* WritingAroundTrademarks: During the manga arc with the [[SpaceWhale extradimensional whale]], Keiichi bonds with it by playing music. In the original, he plays songs from the Music/{{Carpenters}} ("Sing"[[labelnote:•]] {actually a ''Series/SesameStreet'' song}[[/labelnote]] and "Top of the World", specifically). However, due to the impossibility of obtaining the rights to publish the original lyrics, the English translation uses Music/MatthewSweet songs instead ([[GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff he's big in Japan, you know]]; he's also known to be a huge anime nerd and was very willing to allow his lyrics to appear in ''OMG''). This was arguably something of an ''improvement'' over the original, because Sweet's "Missing Time" happens to fit the plot perfectly.
* WrongGenreSavvy:
** Peorth spends much of her introductory arc believing that she's the love interest in a romance – even reading trashy comics to figure out how best to go about wooing Keiichi. Unfortunately for her, she's actually in a comedy built around a romance… and she's not the love interest.
** During the fight with Haval, Keiichi, noticing her ability to find her way in the dark and that she was bothered by a loud noise, assumed that she had super hearing and decided to go with the natural counter of making a lot of noise with one of Skuld's bombs. Ends up not working as Haval's super senses turn out to be the ability to actually "see sound", and loud noises only bother her when they happen in front of her eyes, as they are like a bright flash in the face to her.
* {{Yandere}}: Believe it or not, Belldandy is this when she sees another girl macking on Keiichi. Her jealousy has been known to cause everything from minor explosions to freak weather changes whenever her relationship with Keiichi is threatened. It's to the point where the other goddesses know to run for the hills when they see another girl getting sweet on her boy. They've got good reason! – Bell has access to an utterly insane amount of power since, as one of the nicest and most levelheaded characters in the cast, she's unlikely to consciously abuse it; however, since LoveMakesYouCrazy and Bell-chan tends to hold back in almost everything, her jealousy has a tendency to seep out regardless of any knowledge that this is NotWhatItLooksLike or however much Keiichi looks like an AccidentalPervert. And if she ever intentionally lets loose, all you can do is pray for a quick death.
* YearsTooEarly: Gets thrown around a lot.
** Urd loves to say this to Skuld. The one that ''really'' sets Skuld off is when Urd says Skuld's a hundred years too early to handle an angel (and, by implication, defeat her).
** Mara says this to any lesser beings that try to attack her. Episode 22 of the TV series shows her telling the demons guarding the SealedEvilInACan that they're a ''thousand'' years too early to fight her.
** Hilariously, a ''mortal'' trumps them both – in Chapter 44 (TV Episode 9), Sayoko wins a drinking contest and says to the passed-out loser, "You're one-point-two million years too early to drink this lady under the table, pal!" Naturally, she then passes out – [[ShipTease in Keiichi's arms, no less]] – later in the chapter, after a drunken misadventure or two.
* YouCannotGraspTheTrueForm: The form of the goddesses and demons on Earth are not their real forms, and they can take on any form they want according to the demon in chapter 267. When she reveals her true form to Keiichi, it shows up as an EldritchAbomination type of being, and he almost loses his mind.
-->'''Mokkurkalfi''': "You don't perceive our true appearance. Your existence and ours are different. My form, and what you think you are seeing, are not necessarily the same."
* YoungerThanTheyLook: ''Colours''[='=]s encyclopedia pointed out that Keima looked a little too old to be Keiichi's father or Hotaru-no-suke's son. It's also noted that there is mystery surrounding both of their appearances that probably ties in with some of the bigger mysteries and main themes of the series.
* YourMindMakesItReal: When Hagall [[MasterOfIllusion projects an illusion]] into her opponent's mind, it becomes real to them.
* YourPrincessIsInAnotherCastle: Keiichi's attempts to advance his relationship with Belldandy always end up this way:
** First his sister Megumi moves into the temple with them. Not wanting her to invade their privacy and risk revealing Belldandy's true identity, the couple helped her find another place to stay.
** Their peace falls short when Belldandy's older sister Urd arrives, whose methods of bringing them closer are questionable at times- so much so that she might as well throw a wrench in the works instead. It doesn't help that she also had a mean streak that can cause ire even in Belldandy.
** And then the demons are involved, who always have nasty plans that could end up separating the two.
** After that comes Bell's younger sister Skuld, who is adamant on splitting Keiichi and Belldandy apart by any means necessary. For the majority of the series she is usually the one to invoke this trope to Keiichi, especially after Urd TookALevelInKindness.
** If that's not enough, [[spoiler:it was revealed late in the manga that when Keichi made his wish, his sexual desire was sealed by Heaven to prevent him from pursuing the opportunity.]]
* ZenSlap: The monk who runs the Torikihangan Temple, Koshian, uses strikes with a cane to determine if people are truly meditating, and administers discipline if they show signs of distraction. Unsurprisingly, Belldandy, A Goddess, is able to maintain her composure. Keiichi, equally unsurprising, [[ButtMonkey is subjected to a good deal of discipline]] before Koshian leaves after witnessing Bell's angel and assumes it means she's achieved a form of enlightenment he has yet to reach.
