"Sennen hayai nda yo!"1000 years too early

A stock insult used by the Japanese to show the confidence of a certain character in a one-on-one match, or just to say that a character is out of their league.

Most commonly used before a fight. A character will often say "You're 100 years too early to be facing me." Or any number of years they choose. 100 is most common. In works involving characters that live significantly longer than humans, 1000 or more years might be substituted. The English equivalent would be to call someone "too green" or, less literally, "out of their league".

Not to be confused with someone being years too soon to joke about a tragedy. Or TheJailBaitWait for characters younger than the age of consent. YouAreNotReady tends to be along the lines of advice than taunting.

* Urd uses this on Skuld in Manga/AhMyGoddess all the time, with incredibly ridiculous numbers for how long it'll take. Mostly she uses it because she knows Skuld will react.
* Subverted in Manga/Bastard1988, when the main character is fighting a demon who keeps bragging about how he is 400 years old... with no idea that the protagonist is much older than that. (The dub even Woolseyism adds a line to this effect after the demon's inevitable facepwning.)
* The 36th episode of Anime/BeastWarsII had Hellscream tell Lio Junior that he is a thousand years too early to fight him. Unbeknownst to Hellscream, this was both metaphorically and literally true: at that point of the series Lio Junior is at best a few weeks old.
* A common occurrence in Manga/Bleach, although usually scaled up to factors of millennia due to the Soul Reapers' extremely long life span.
** Anime episodes 57-58. After Ichigo demands that Byakuya use his Bankai, Byakuya says "It's a thousand years too soon for you to die by my Bankai." Instead, he uses his Shikai to attack Ichigo. After Ichigo defeats Byakuya's Shikai with his own Getsuga Tensho blast, Byakuya changes his mind and does use his Bankai on Ichigo.
** At the end of anime episode 86 (during the Bount arc), the Bount Sawatari tells Chad, Noba and Rangiku Matsumoto that they're "100 years too early" to defeat him. Notable in that it's stated that Chad COULD have killed Sawatari if Ururu had not been stuck inside his whale doll.
** PlayedForLaughs in one of the manga fillers where Sui Feng and Kiyone try to surreptitiously take pictures of Yoruichi, who remarks that "[Sui Feng] is 1000 too early to be doing that" after discovering them.
** Even Renji gets in on the action, remarking in his first confrontation with Ichigo, "come back in 2000 years!"
** And if that wasn't enough, the Captain Commander does it too. In the Rescue Rukia arc, he refers to Nanao by saying that he "do[es] not have time to teach infants". Justified in that he's over 2000 years old.
* Variation from Literature/ACertainMagicalIndex: when Touma first tries to punch Accelerator, Accelerator stomps the ground, sending Touma flying away while he says, "Too slow. You're a whole century too slow!"
* Some random female delinquent tells this to Kuroko in Manga/ACertainScientificRailgun, who promptly teleports her upside down six feet above the ground and mocks her age.
* In Anime/CrossAnge, the titular protagonist throws one to Embryo as part of her PreMortemOneLiner.
-->Ange: You wanna screw me again? Give it a few thousand years!
* From The Disappearance of Literature/HaruhiSuzumiya:
-->Haruhi: You peeping Kyon! Trying to peep on Mikuru-chan's underwear? You are two-million-five-thousand-six-hundred years behind!
* Manga/Eyeshield 21 likes having people use the phrase.
* Manga/FairyTail:
** Laxus says this to Natsu . Although on that note, Natsu ends up .
** Happy and Carla meet and stay with Happy's parents, Lucky and Marl, but do not recognize them. As they leave, the two reveal they recognized Happy and Marl talks about proud she is and speculates that Carla was his girlfriend. Lucky says, "It's 100 years too early for him to bring a girl home!"
** In the episode "Challenger", which has a flashback of Lucy's time during the post-Tartarus TimeSkip and working for Sorcerer Weekly, her initial attempts to write an article for her boss Jason are said to be a couple decades too soon. Though as she improves, the number of decades goes down until she's an editor for the magazine.
* Sci-fi variation from Anime/FLCL:
-->Haruko: You're a million years under-evolved, primitive monkey!\
Amarao: That's discriminatory language used against underdeveloped cultures!
* Used in Manga/Gintama by Gintoki to Hijikata when the former defeats a ghost by throwing her upon the latter.
--> "You're still a hundred years too early to teach me on the ways of the samurai."
* In Literature/GoodLuckNinomiyaKun, Ryoko gripes that Shungo is ten years too young to catch a cold from exhaustion.
* Happens A LOT in Manga/GreatTeacherOnizuka.
* In Manga/GTOTheEarlyYears: "Go and train ten years first before looking for me!" (after knocking their leader out with one punch)
* Likewise, Manga/HajimeNoIppo, particularly when Ippo challenges Eiji Date.
* Extra in Anime/IdolProject tells a tentacle monster trying to molest her that he's "a billion years too early to touch her skin".
* Toutaku delivers this line in episode 4 of Manga/IkkiTousen to thugs from his school after they are completely outclassed by Hakufu's mother.
* In Manga/InitialD, Kenta says this to Wataru when he attempts to challenge Keisuke.
* Manga/InuYasha, at least twice, probably more.
* From Manga/KenichiTheMightiestDisciple, Takeda is trying to get a sensei, but is "56,700,000 years too early."
* Manga/LuckyStar:
** Konata says this to Kagami, while cosplaying as Literature/HaruhiSuzumiya.
** In the manga, Akira says that Minoru should be a million years too early to get pictures of him featured in a magazine.
* In Manga/TheLegendOfZeldaFourSwords2004, Stone Arrghus makes this taunt, claiming that the Links are fighting him ten years too early to be a challenge.
* In Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers, Teana usually says this to her idealistic partner Subaru whenever the latter gets carried away worrying about Nanoha, their VeteranInstructor mentor:
** Just before the Forwards leave for the final battle, Subaru attempts to cheer Nanoha up, but notices afterwards that Nanoha ended up reassuring her. When told about it, Teana points out that Subaru is 10 years too early to be reassuring Nanoha, of all people.
** In the last chapter of the epilogue manga, when Teana deduces that the reason for Subaru's apprehension in joining the Special Rescue squad is an unconsciously worry that she won't be able to protect the other members of Riot Force Six, she goes into full Tsundere mode:
---> Teana: You're 10 years too early to even worry about Nanoha-san!\
Subaru: Ah, yeah, true that.
* Variant from Manga/MaisonIkkoku episode 91: Akemi refers to Kyoko and Godai's relationship squabbles, saying that it's "going to take about 100 years to settle this". (It ends up taking 96 episodes).
* In episode 2 of Manga/MassuguNiIkou, Sora believes that Mametarou is trying to "steal" Sebastian from her. She says that Mametarou is a million years too young for Sebastian.
* In the Manga/MidoriDays manga, Seiji's bossy sister Rin informs him that "you're about 100,000 years too young to defy me!"
* Manga/MyBrideIsAMermaid has Lunar using this line on Nagasumi when he offers to help her prepare for one of her acting roles.
* Mashiro from Anime/MyOtome taunts her castle guards with this before she tries to run away from them.
* Used by Deidara on the title character of Manga/Naruto "You're a hundred years too young to be giving ME orders, hmmm!" He also says this to Tobi in the Sanbi filler arc.
* Manga/NegimaMagisterNegiMagi:
** In the first anime, Chisame tells her opponent class that they're 100 years too early to try beating her supreme hacking skills, and that their homepage would fail.
** Also used again by Chisame in chapter 183, unusual because it isn't intended as an insult. Chisame is protecting Negi from exposure to ... Yaoi ah, "material" Doujinshi above his age level.
---> "You're 20 years too early for this stuff! I take that back, [[ThingsManWasNotMeantToKnow you shouldn't learn about [it] for your entire life]]!!!"
** Used in chapter 291, when the fake Eva says to Negi "You're four hundred years to early to be spouting lines like that, brat!"
* Several characters in Anime/OjamajoDoremi use this. Special mention goes to Tooru after he kidnaps Hana-chan just to spite Onpu for telling him off.
* Manga/OnePiece: The characters in general are quite fond of using this, but of particular note is , who uses it to tease over-ambitious kids like Luffy. What makes this notable is a scene that shows when this was said against the same character by his fellow , he took such offense that they clashed swords over it! Whitebeard himself uses the phrase fairly often as well.
* Manga/Psyren, Chapter 142, Yoshina Ageha to Amagi Miroku: "You're going to kill me? Just try it. After all, even if you had 10 years, you still wouldn't be able to do it." [[spoiler:It ain't no boast either; Ageha had already defeated a much more powerful Miroku once before, 10 years in the future.]]
* Manga/RanmaOneHalf:
** Used by Cologne, when Ranma goes up against her. The number of years too early it is changes every time she says it, too... and she turns out to be wrong, thanks to Ranma's 'Fist of The Cat'.
** Shampoo uses this statement as well to Akane.
* Nancy tells Yomiko that she's "100 years to early to worry about me" in Anime/ReadOrDie.
* In the second season of Manga/RosarioPlusVampire, Inner Moka tells a Phoenix "You are ten years too early to defeat me"
* In Manga/Sekirei, Minato finally calls his mother Takami out for the first time to defend his TrueCompanions. In response, Takami praises him for how much he's grown up.... and, being the troll she is, captures him while reminding him with a SlasherSmile that it's still 100 years too early for him to challenge her.
* Manga/SoulEater has Black Star using this on occasion, in line with his claims to being the best everything in the anywhere.
* When Manga/SquidGirl loses at a fighting game to her new friend Kiyomi, she says she'll jet her revenge. Kiyomi tells her she'll have to train 10 years before she can beat her.
* Leozack says exactly this to Star Saber when they meet for the first time in Anime/TransformersVictory. Later, in Transformers: Return of Convoy, Super Megatron tells Sixliner that he's two million years too early.
** In the case of the former, Star Saber easily thrashes Leozack (flashback would show Star Saber already being an accomplished warrior 100 000 years earlier), while in the case of the latter Super Megatron is fully justified in his boast: as leader of the Decepticons he's got several million years worth of combat experience over a comparative youngster like Sixliner (in-universe Sixliner was only active since the 1980s). He easily dispatches Sixliner, and it's only the arrival of Star Convoy that saves the rookie.
* Manga/TheWorldGodOnlyKnows has Keima using this when challenging someone to a shogi match: "It's 100 years too early for you to challenge Master Tenri! First you must face her student, me!"

* Madara tells Naruto he is "literally a hundred years to early to fight me" in FanFic/AGrowingAffection.
* Fanfic/KatawaShoujoRumblingHearts: Akira tells her sister Lilly that she's "a million years too early to put one past me" when discussing Lilly's relationship with Hisao. Lilly insists they're not dating, but Akira knows that she snuck into Hisao's room when she last visited him in California.
* In Fanfic/KyonBigDamnHero, after Kyon's sister awakens her brother by trying to elbow him in the gut, Kyon tells her she's a hundred years too young to try that on him.
* PlayedForLaughs in Kyubed: Shinobi's Revenge on Naruto, where Kira, one of Naruto's kitsune subjects boasts that Tsunade is a hundred years too young to possibly defeat her. The comedic part comes from the fact she's referring not to Tsunade's combat ability but her EmbarrassingNickname of "The Legendary Sucker", something that is an actual title Kira won for her skills at oral sex. She's very confused to learn Tsunade's nickname is about gambling.
* Nereza the Spiritomb says a variation of this when Blitz and his teammates fight against her in chapter 46 of Fanfic/PokemonMysteryDungeonReflectingBalance, telling them that they are about one-hundred-and-eight years too early to be challenging her.
* Fanfic/ThePalaververse: Moonlight Palaver: When someone is trying to be evasive with her, Celestia makes a similar statement of experience:
--> Celestia: I've got a thousand years head start on you

* "The Cauld Lad of Hylton" is a 16th Century ghost story about a dead boy's spirit haunting a castle, who cries out in the night:
-->Woe's me, woe's me,\
The acorn's not yet fallen from the tree,\
That's to grow the wood,\
That's to make the cradle,\
That's to rock the bairn,(baby)\
That's to grow to the man\
That's to lay me!(meaning to "lay to rest", or exorcise)

* Literature/ADearthOfChoice: Biyaban the ghoul dismisses the Silver-ranked team who have come to challenge him, giving them a LastChanceToQuit.
--> Biyaban: Go on, little children. Come back when you are at least Gold-Tier, and we will have a true match. Then, you will be a worthy addition to my legend. I will carve your noble sacrifice into these walls, that all might remember your valiant fight. But this will not be that, and I have no desire for it. Go.
* In Neil Gaiman's Literature/Stardust Tristan hears this taunt from a creature (which Gaiman almost definitely borrowed from the story of the Cauld Lad of Hylton, see Folklore above):
-->“The squirrel has not yet found the acorn that will grow into the oak that will be cut to form the cradle of the babe that will grow to slay me.”

* In the first season of Series/Highlander, Duncan faces a much older immortal who initially holds a significant advantage over our hero. The other immortal, while evil, nonetheless respects Duncan as a WorthyOpponent and comments that with another century of practice (and defeating other immortals), Duncan might become strong enough to beat him.
* Superheroes: A Never Ending Battle: Denny O'Neil says, concerning the "Agent Diana Prince" revamp of ComicBook/WonderWoman:
--> I believed in racial equality, and I believed in pacifism, and along came feminism, and I thought "I ought to believe in this", but emotionally, I was still five years away from understanding and accepting feminism.
* In Series/TomicaHeroRescueFire, after Tsubasa joined the team, it became a RunningGag for him to taunt either the MonsterOfTheWeek or the Mooks by dodging their attacks and saying they're ten years too early to try something like that.
* From :
-->Man: I don't want to kill you, woman.
-->Lagertha: You couldn't kill me if you tried for a hundred years.
* Franchise/UltramanZero: This serves as the titular Ultra's catchphrase usually serving as his PreAssKickingOneLiner. It also references how old he is.
-->Ultraman Zero: You're 20,000 years too early to beat me!

* This, more so than becoming Queen Of ARSION (which she did by defeating Ayako Hamada), was Wrestling/LionessAsuka's primary reason for entering ARSION, who were billing their head trainer Mariko Yoshida as the best woman wrestler in Japan.

* In the first VideoGame/AdvanceWars game, Kanbei says, "Come back when you've matured some! Say, in ten years!!!" the first time he uses his CO Power in the mission "Kanbei's Error?".
* As a Sega game, VideoGame/Bayonetta uses this as a BondOneLiner if she finishes a fight with a Tetsuzankou and gets a Pure Platinum rank for it. It's also sometimes heard when she uses her forward throw as a GuestFighter in VideoGame/SuperSmashBros for 3DS and Wii U. Akira himself also uses it for his appearance as an Assist Trophy in VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosUltimate.
* In VideoGame/DeadOrAlive, Zack refers to this line after Kokoro beats Akira in story mode.
* VideoGame/Cursed Memories uses this before a certain HopelessBossFight (unless you've been grinding like a fiend or are on a NewGamePlus).
--> "No!!! With those herbs, I could've regained my levels! Ugh... why'd you have to go out of your way to ruin my life, you little brat?!"\
"What's the matter? Are you hungry or something?"\
"I'm pissed off!! I don't care about our level difference anymore... today's the day I beat the crap outta you, you hear me?!"\
"Don't you know anything? It's a million years too early for you to beat me!"
* VideoGame/EarthBound1994:
-->[[spoiler:Pokey]]: It is a gazillion years too early for you to oppose Giygas!
* VideoGame/FatalFury:
** This is one of Ryuji Yamazaki's win lines in every game he appears in.
** In VideoGame/KOFMaximumImpact, Billy Kane will tell a defeated Alba and/or Soiree Meira, "It's a hundred years too soon for you to rule this town!"
* In VideoGame/FateGrandOrder, Saint Martha tends to slip to her not-so-holy attitude and fling this kind of insult, "You're ten years too early!", only to cough a bit and give out a more 'saintly' quote afterwards.
* Soulcage pulls something like this when you fight it in VideoGame/FinalFantasyIX, claiming that it has foreseen its death.
* VideoGame/TheFirstFunkyFighter has the most exaggerated example where the main character says "You're one million years too young to be challenging human beings!!!" when he beats a monstrous animal.
* From VideoGame/GitarooMan: "Not in a million billion years." (infinity impossible)
** Later on the game, there's "Not... in all of eternity." (infinity impossible)
* Lass of VideoGame/GrandChase tends to use this as a victory quote and/or a taunt.
* VideoGame/InuYashaTheSecretOfTheCursedMask: After an enemy battle, Inuyasha may quip "Maybe in ten years, you have a chance at beating me!"
* VideoGame/OsuTatakaeOuendan has the "Thrill" level, where Ryuuji says that "Wakana-chan is one million years too early for you!"
* In VideoGame/MegadimensionNeptuniaVII, Uzume will sometimes say that her opponents are ten years too early upon winning a fight.
* In VideoGame/PetalCrash, for one of Penny's winquotes when played as without Deony, she says that the opponent is 1,000 years too early to face her and her brother at the same time.
--> Penny: But if you pay all the annual fees up FRONT...
* In VideoGame/PokemonRedAndBlue/Yellow, there's a trainer in Brock's gym who tells you that you're "ten thousand light-years away" from facing Brock. Upon defeat, he says this line:
-->"Darn! Light-years isn't time! It measures distance!"
** The fangame VideoGame/PokemonClover pokes fun at this mix-up as after you face the Trainer who says the same thing, you have to step on a teleporter to get sent to an asteroid where Brock is waiting, meaning that he really was light-years away from you.
* VideoGame/PrincessMaker1: In Refine, Martial Arts Tournament contestant, Coela Canth says this if the daughter loses to her:
--> Hahaha, it's about ten years too early for a little girl like you to fight me!
* It also shows up a few times in the Japanese dub of the VideoGame/Shenmue, likely as a ShoutOut, since both games were created by Yu Suzuki, and the protagonist is an Expy of Akira.
* In VideoGame/SonicAdventure2, Eggman has this to say to Tails just before their first fight begins:
-->You're just a kid. You couldn't beat me in a hundred years!
* In VideoGame/SuperMarioRPG, when you're chasing down the crocodile thief, there's a point when you have to sneak up behind him. When you do, he says, "At this rate it will take 100 years for you to catch me" and runs away. The second time you catch him, he says it'll take fifty years. The third time, before he can come up with a proper number, Mallow interrupts and demands the stolen property, prompting the boss fight.
* VideoGame/SuperRobotWars AscendedFanboy Ryusei Date uses the same line, in a clear allusion to their voice actor.
* One of VideoGame/TalesOfVesperias end-battle quotes is a variation on this between Yuri and Estelle:
-->Yuri: It'll be a hundred years before you can beat me!
-->Estelle: Because you've lived a lot longer, right?
-->Yuri: ...Not exactly.
** If you lose to Peridot on Mt. Grimm in VideoGame/TalesOfHearts, she says this almost verbatim.
* In VideoGame/VanguardPrincess, Lilith's victory quote is "You're ten thousand years too early!"
* Akira Yuki of VideoGame/VirtuaFighter is famous for his usage of this line ("Juu'nen hayain da yo" - "You're ten years too early"). Other characters even make reference to it (e.g. Pai in Virtua Fighter 4).

* In VisualNovel/LittleBusters, Rin taunts one of her cats saying that he's 100 years late to defeat her after it fails at snatching the toy she was carrying.
* Franchise/WhenTheyCry:
** VisualNovel/HigurashiWhenTheyCry:
*** Mion saying pretty much the same thing as the Pokémon example, with Keiichi making the same correction.
*** Satoko always says something similar.
** VisualNovel/UminekoWhenTheyCry:
*** A humorous variant occurs in the second arc where Battler tells Maria that she's "ten years too early to be telling someone to eat her," but to say it to him when the time comes. This right after telling Beatrice to make him a sandwich out of her breasts. It was a rather odd scene, given what had just happened...
*** Also used in EP 6: "It's a thousand years too early for you to capture Battler's heart, little girl."

* Webcomic/TheOrderOfTheStick:
** When Roy finally confronts the BigBad Xykon, the lich calmly suggests that Roy is a dozen Character Levels too early to face him and even politely offers to postpone their showdown for him to do some LevelGrinding.
** Much later, the infuriatingly GenreSavvy Tarquin says this to Elan, not purely because he's not ready (although he isn't), but because it would be so much more dramatic to run away and mull on his dilemma for ten years before coming back and finally defeating his ArchnemesisDad! Elan is horrified at the idea of simply letting Tarquin continue to rule TheEmpire for another decade, but doesn't have much choice as Xykon is a more immediate threat. He tries to defy the trope before leaving by setting up some minor [=NPCs=] as a rebel alliance, but we haven't yet seen how they got on in the main characters' absence.
* In Webcomic/SuperStupor, Lady Diamondback tells Snowy Owl that she's not ready to face off against a supervillain and should find herself a starter villain like a drug dealer or a crooked cop.

* Stinkoman is explicitly designed to parody every 80's anime trope in the book, so naturally this is the first thing he ever says:
-->Stinkoman: No way, you're just a kid! Maybe when you're older!

* Kakyoin says this when no selling Polnareff's tap on the head in WebVideo/VaguelyRecallingJoJo
-->Kakyoin: Geh... Nobody believes me. Time for brute force!\
(Kakyoin art shifts into a buff version of himself, which looks like Broly, and tries to kill Mannish Boy.)\
Polnareff: Chop!\
(Polnareff tries to knock Kakyoin out with a chop to the back of his neck, but he fails.)\
Kakyoin: You're naive, Polnareff! Come back in a 100 years when you're ready to use those skills on me!

* Before the 2006 World Baseball Classic, Ichiro Suzuki spoke about how badly he wanted to "make the other teams [in the Asian group] think they wouldn't be able to beat them for the next 30 years". Then Japan lost a game to South Korea. Of course, their broken pride was repaired when they won their first WBC title.
* Frequently mentioned in boxing, as in an example from ESPN's Friday Night Fights:
-->Joe Tessitore: Mike Arnaoutis beat Juan Urango back in 2004, but that was a young Urango, not the one we know today.
