[[caption-width-right:300: Yarr! Davy Jones's beard be made of Cthulhumanoid Octopus Tentacles!]]

So you want to give a character a beard and invoke all of those fun beard tropes. But oh no! Our character is some kind of creature or robot that doesn't have hair! But, that's okay, we'll just put something else there and make it look like a beard. See? All better!

May also be used when you want your character to appear alien, but not too alien. If they have a real beard anyway, they may be a case of NonMammalianHair. If they're a pirate, may overlap with CaptainColorbeard.

!!Examples:

* Anime/DenNohCoil had a whole episode about beards made out of "illegals", dark creatures that could only be seen by characters wearing the series' computer glasses. The beards worshiped the people whose faces they were on as gods.
* Endeavor from Manga/MyHeroAcademia is a superhero with the power to produce and manipulate large amounts of fire. When using his powers he chooses to give himself a beard made of flames.
* In Manga/OnePiece, Django's goatee is actually the stalk of a mushroom that grew on his chin. Eating the cap of the mushroom is what gave Django his hypnosis powers.

* One of the mutated teens in Charles Burns graphic novel ComicBook/BlackHole has what appears to be a regular beard (which makes sense since he's been living out in the woods) but on closer and repeated viewing is revealed to be his mutation: a lump of flesh growing on his face in that general shape.
* ComicBook/Empowered has the villain Weirdbeard. (It's made of PrehensileHair, otherwise seems to be normal - just very long.)
* Franchise/WonderWoman:
** ComicBook/WonderWoman1942: Rykornians have plant-fiber based facial hair reminiscent of corn-silk.
** ComicBook/WonderWoman1987: This version of Deimos, the Olympian god of terror, has a beard made of poisonous serpents.

* The Candlemaker from WesternAnimation/TheBookOfLife, has one made out of clouds.
* WesternAnimation/Cars2: The Zen Master (an old Japanese three-wheeled truck with a coolie hat and traditional robes and carrying a rake who runs Tokyo Art Museum's zen gardens) has a large white fender over his front wheel that looks like a long, flowing beard (appropriate since he's supposed to be a parody of martial artist mentors). For some reason, his toy and the accompanying blister package art did not show him with his "beard", making him look much younger than he actually is.

* The Goblin King in Film/TheHobbitAnUnexpectedJourney has a mass of fatty flesh hanging down from his chin, wobbling as he speaks, like a very unpleasant beard.
* Davy Jones from Franchise/PiratesOfTheCaribbean has Octopus tentacles around his face to resemble his beard in human form.
* Certain Transformers in the Film/TransformersFilmSeries have beards made out of mechanical parts. Ratchet has a mustache, Jetfire has a beard made of metal plates, The Fallen somehow has a braided beard made of metal, same with Sentinel Prime. Hound has a beard that appears to be made of wires and circuits.

* In the Literature/Discworld novels, Jack Frost's hair and beard are made out of icicles.
* Treebeard and most of the other Ents in Literature/TheLordOfTheRings have moss or leaf beards.
* In Literature/ArtemisFowl, dwarf beards are basically alive. Along with other magical properties.
* Literature/BlueBeard: The antagonist gets his nickname from his titular beard, which is inexplicably blue. Very weird indeed

* Series/DoctorWho: "The End of Time" has a pair of RubberForeheadAliens called the Vinvocci, who have spikes on their heads instead of hair. The male Vinvocci has some spikes on his chin like a goatee.
* D'Argo from Series/Farscape has a fleshy beard-bulb along with a long-braided moustache.

* In the video for Music/LadyGaga's "Bad Romance", there's a guy with a beard made out of golden metal.

* TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons:
** Barbazu are devils with beards made up of bristles so sharp and stiff, they can stab people with them.
** Mitchifer, the proprieter of The World Serpent Inn, has a beard made up of hundreds of small, thin snakes.
* TabletopGame/Dreadfleet: The artwork for Tordrek Hackhart, the Chaos Dwarf captain of the Black Kraken, shows that he replaced his beard with a mass of writhing mechanical tentacles, fitting with the mechanical sea monster theme of his daemon-possessed submersible.
* TabletopGame/MagicTheGathering: Male Kor have tentacle beards.

* Turaga Vakama in the WesternAnimation/Bionicle movies had one on his mask that resembled Pharaoh beards. Other characters that shared his mask-type received noticeably shorter ones, even Macku, who's female. Also, Hahli's Toa Inika form had a mustache+goatee combo composed of breathing tubes. Again, Hahli's a she.

* Boldur from VideoGame/Battleborn is a space dwarf with a beard that is a bunch of tree branches with a few leaves sticking out.
* Vamos the Blacksmith in VideoGame/DarkSouls is a very large skeleton with a beard made of chains.
* The Organon of VideoGame/Deponia have mechanical beards. These beards can contain various tracking sensors.
* Paarthurnax in VideoGame/TheElderScrollsVSkyrim, as a proud member of the Greybeard order, has a beard made out of horns on his chin.
* VideoGame/GodOfWarPS4: Jormungandr the World Serpent, like his title suggests, is a SNAKE with a typical Viking beard, and it's made of seaweed!
* VideoGame/HeroesOfTheStorm: Muradin's Candy King skin gives him a beard made of whipped cream.
* The Deku, a race of PlantPeople from Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda franchise, have leafy beards.
* Franchise/MassEffect: Although it's not common, krogan seem to have a propensity to grow bony "goatees". Grunt has a few little plates on his chin, while Nakmor Drack has a cluster of spikes growing from his.
* A minor character in VideoGame/PaperMario64, Oakley, has a beard made out of leaves.
* Emboar from VideoGame/PokemonBlackAndWhite has a beard made of fire. Also, Probopass has a mustache made of iron filings and Beartic has a beard made of ice. Tropius has a beard made out of bananas, while Galarian Weezing has a beard made of smog on one of its faces. Corviknight has one too, sporting what looks like a beard made of metallic feathers.
* Admiral Razorbeard from VideoGame/Rayman2TheGreatEscape has, well, a razorblade for a beard.
* In VideoGame/TheSecretOfMonkeyIsland, the Ghost Pirate [=LeChuck=], on whom Davy Jones above Expy is based, has a beard which appears to be made of hair but writhes about of its own accord. In VideoGame/MonkeyIsland2LeChucksRevenge, Guybrush keeps it as a memento - and it's still wriggling.
** Also, in VideoGame/TheCurseOfMonkeyIsland, the aforementioned Ghost Pirate [=LeChuck=] has a new demon form with a beard made of fire. This turns into a bit of a ChekhovsGun in VideoGame/EscapeFromMonkeyIsland when his beard eventually melts through the icy mountain he was buried under, freeing him.
* VideoGame/WorldOfWarcraft:
** In VideoGame/WarcraftIII, most Ancients have long flowing beards made of vines and leaves, specifically the Ancient of Lore, Ancient of War, Tree of Life, and Ancient Protector. This is carried into their [=WoW=] models, with the beardless Ancients of Wind and Wonders not appearing at all.
** Male draenei and eredar have zero, two, or four tentacles hanging from their chins like a beard (female draenei instead have them behind their ears). The really weird part is that they can also grow regular beards alongside their tentacles.

* Vlad in Webcomic/ElGoonishShive had feather-antennae growing out of his jaw and cheeks. He lost them when he was transformed into a human woman.

* Webcomic/Unsounded: Ruck, a mind drinking efheby, has tentacles instead of hair. This includes a beard and sideburns, with a pair of small hands for holding victims in place.

* The Website/SCPFoundation contains one such example in SCP-6087, a mythical boogeyman known as the Voice-Taker who, as his name implies, steals the voices of children who lie, curse, and disobey their parents, which he then hides down in the same well where he died. The titular being is described as possessing an oversized mouth, and a beard composed entirely out of flies and maggots.

* In Webvideo/CriticalRole, Fjord, knowing of Nott's fondness for buttons and baubles, concocts a tale of a pirate named Buttonbeard to trick the hydrophobic Nott into accompanying the team on an underwater treasure search. Nott sees through it instantly.
* Pinchly, from WebAnimation/LongGoneGulch, is a cactus man. It's hard to tell sometimes, but he sports a scruffy looking beard and sparse moustache of cactus prickles.

* The way Vilgax of WesternAnimation/Ben10 is designed makes his tentacles look somewhat like a beard. However, you'll only notice this in the very first episode, because for most of the series he wears a breathing mask, making him look like a typical Chthulu-inspired character.
* WesternAnimation/Futurama:
** Flexo has a goatee that's just a black metal triangle. Bender could impersonate him by sticking a copy on like a fridge magnet.
** Bender sports rust stubble if he goes too long without drinking.
* WesternAnimation/StarWarsRebels: Mon Calamari starship engineer Quarrie from "Wings of the Master" has a "moustache" made of flesh flaps and "stubble" caused by variation in the pigmentation of his skin.
* Several Franchise/Transformers characters have metal beards, goatees, or mustaches.
** In WesternAnimation/TheTransformers we have an apparent case of a metal beard growing. Alpha Trion has a long white metal beard, but during a time travel episode a younger version is seen with a black metal mustache. MST3KMantra Best not to think about it.
* In the 1996 series of ComicStrip/DennisTheMenaceUK, one episode had APirate400YearsTooLate looking at portraits of his ancestors, including one actually named Weirdbeard, who had a green beard with something stuck in it.

* Egyptian Pharaohs wore strap on beards made of different materials. Even one, UsefulNotes/Hatshepsut, who was a woman.
* Some people are into bee bearding, with several thousand of the live bugs looking like a beard on their faces and necks, although it's not likely to be a long-term thing when you think about it.
* Dewlaps are fleshy dangling structures found on the necks of animals, such as turkeys (wattles), lizards, or zebu. Not technically beards, but it looks like this trope. Similarly, bearded dragon lizards have spines on their neck that look like a beard, hence their name.
* The barbels of many fish species can look like mustaches and goatees.
* Turkeys have a long tuft of "hair" that's called a beard, and looks bit like a neck beard.
