->"Hey it's that one Peter jerk again. And this time, he's accompanied by another Peter, Creator/PetePostlethwaite and his killer cheekbones."

Look around the room you're in. Notice anyone with particularly prominent, exaggerated, or high cheekbones? Yes? Chances are they're the one out to get you.

Villains seem to have a tendency toward quite noticeable cheekbones. It's far more common in animated works, as facial features are often exaggerated. This trope is quite often seen on TheBaroness or the DragonLady. It's perhaps because sharper cheekbones lend a face a sharper, more angular look, which can convey intense emotion more easily sometimes, or (as with LeanAndMean) because of the unsettlingly skeletal, deathly appearance it can give you. It's also the opposite of the kind of smoother, softer face known as "baby-faced"--and since a baby-faced person looks like an innocent child, it follows that the prominent bone structure will look like the opposite of this.

Compare LeanAndMean. SisterTrope to SinisterSchnoz and ThinChinOfSin. Contrast with the LanternJawOfJustice for the good guys.

----
!!Examples:

* Kycilia Zabi and M'quve in Anime/MobileSuitGundam. Kycilia's especially since her cheekbones are so sharp and more pronounced.
%%* Sebastian Michealis in Manga/BlackButler.
* Manga/DeliciousInDungeon: Trope when a shapeshifter creates duplicates of Laios' group based on the other group members' memories. A copy of Marcille, influenced by Senshi's FantasticRacism against elves, has exaggerated features with extra-angular cheekbones and ears and blathers about using BlackMagic.
%%* Prandine/Fallow in Anime/DeltoraQuest.
* All of The Big Five in the Anime/YuGiOh anime save OtakiCrump, who is more chubby-cheeked. Extra points go to DaimonLeichter, whose cheekbones could probably score sheet metal.
* Yoshikage Kira from Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventureDiamondIsUnbreakable sports a prominent set As fans have noticed, he also has a resemblance to the late Music/DavidBowie with his swept-back blonde hair, strong jaw, prominent cheekbones.
* Dr. Gero of the Android Saga has just huge cheekbones that not even his big bushy mustache can cover.
** Recoome and Dabura have a set but is overshadowed by their lantern jaws.
** Mr. Satan is an inversion as while he's a greedy coward and an arrogant showboat he's still the strongest non-ki-using-human who genuinely cares about helping people and can see the best even in the worst of people (such as ).
* Myotismon has some sinister cheekbones when looking up close, Although his VideoGame/DigimonWorld counterpart subverts this.

* Franchise/WonderWoman:
** Sharkeeta, a winged shark mermaid who leads her fellows against the Amazons in a bid for bloody revenge, has high very prominent cheekbones.
** Volume 1: The monstrously cruel and self centered Queen Atomia has sharp well defined cheekbones.
* The Comicbook/XMen villain Comicbook/Apocalypse certainly invokes this, with his cheekbones even having metallic implants (it's much more noticeable in the live-action version).

* Very common for Disney villains, many of whom also have the LeanAndMean trope going. These include:
** Yzma from WesternAnimation/TheEmperorsNewGroove.
** Cruella de Vil of WesternAnimation/OneHundredAndOneDalmatians.
** Frollo from WesternAnimation/Disney.
** Jafar from WesternAnimation/Aladdin
** Chernabog from WesternAnimation/Fantasia.
** Chef Skinner and Anton Ego from WesternAnimation/Ratatouille. Ego is a subversion though, as he's less a villain than a jaded CausticCritic, and when something actually is good he steps up as a friend of it. And he has a truly heartwarming flashback.
** Maleficent in WesternAnimation/SleepingBeauty
** Ursula from WesternAnimation/1989 -- she may have a round face, but her cheeks could jab out your eyeballs.
** from WesternAnimation/Up.
* Thrax from Film/OsmosisJones has dangerously pointy cheekbones. Then again, being a virus, he doesn't really have cheekbones so much as a capsid.
* ComicBook/TheJoker from WesternAnimation/BatmanMaskOfThePhantasm and WesternAnimation/BatmanBeyondReturnOfTheJoker. Perhaps the most so in Under the Red Hood.
* In WesternAnimation/TurningRed, in her old age, Wu's cheekbones have become particularly prominent. It's downplayed in that she's really just strict and intimidating rather than malicious.

* Jareth from Film/Labyrinth. Inevitable when you're played by Music/DavidBowie, and it's appropriate that the villain in a child's fantasy would have such a classically evil-looking trait.
* Jackson Rippner in Film/RedEye has cheekbones made more prominent by shadows and lighting effects.
* Creator/CillianMurphy and his cheekbones also make an excellent Scarecrow in Film/BatmanBegins.
* Joeseph Goebbels was known to have prominent cheekbones in real life, but his appearance in Downfall pushes it to the extreme.
* Franchise/PiratesOfTheCaribbean:
** The unpredictable, barely-trustworthy Captain Jack Sparrow has high cheekbones despite being an AntiHero, not a full villain.
** Played straight with Creator/BillNighy as Davy Jones. What's he even need a sword for with those things?
* Grand Moff Tarkin of Film/ANewHope first appears in a position of authority over Darth Vader, so his villainous credentials would be pretty clear already, but he's still got this trope going in spades. Happily averted with Creator/PeterCushing himself.
** Played straight all the other times Cushing played the villain, but averted with many of his roles in the Hammer Horror series; he would often play the hero, opposite Creator/ChristopherLee's villain.
* Discussed in Film/Unbreakable, where Elijah notes the fact that comic-book villains tend to have sharp and pointy features, whereas heroes are lantern-jawed.
* The Red Skull from Film/CaptainAmericaTheFirstAvenger, especially after he loses his LatexPerfection. He looks like a skull so it's not all that surprising that he lacks much flesh to smooth them.
* Film/HarryPotter:
** Pansy Parkinson sports them in Film/HarryPotterAndTheDeathlyHallowsPart2, courtesy of her lovely actress Creator/ScarlettByrne.
** Bellatrix Lestrange, Voldemort's number two, who is played by PerkyGoth Creator/HelenaBonhamCarter. It is mentioned in the books that she has the look of someone who used to be very beautiful before she got too emaciated, so sharp cheekbones can be expected.
** Creator/MadsMikkelsen (no stranger to playing villains for this reason) is took over the role of Gellert Grindelwald starting with the third Film/FantasticBeasts film.
* In Film/StarTrekIntoDarkness, the villain is played by Creator/BenedictCumberbatch.
* In Creator/SamRaimi's first Film/SpiderMan1 film, the Green Goblin is played by Creator/WillemDafoe, who is able to pull off some truly disturbing leers in no small part because of this trope.
* Joseph Goebbels in Film/Downfall. He's one of Hitler's closest associates - need we say more?
* Loki in the Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse. Creator/TomHiddleston's already prominent cheekbones are further emphasized with makeup, leading his face to go from "friendly and lanky" to "skull-like".
* The T-1000 in Film/Terminator2JudgmentDay makes good use of Robert Patrick's cheekbones to make him look sinister.
* In Film/XMenFirstClass, both Sebastian Shaw and Erik Lehnsherr have defined and hard facial features compared to Charles Xavier's soft baby face.
* Creator/AngelinaJolie as the title character in Film/Maleficent. [[spoiler:Subverted in that she's not really a villain for the most part, just really pissed off.]]
* Creator/CateBlanchett and her epic cheekbones as the villainesses in Film/IndianaJonesAndTheKingdomOfTheCrystalSkull, Film/Hanna, Cinderella and Film/ThorRagnarok.
* The sinister Slugworth in Film/WillyWonkaAndTheChocolateFactory has visible cheekbones, emphasized by a prominent scar on his cheek to boot -- though we eventually find out that .

* Literature/Discworld:
** All illustrations of Lord Vetinari, the not quite benevolent ruler of Ankh-Morpork, portray him with very sharp features, including these.
** Some of the elves from Literature/LordsAndLadies made themselves appear to have high cheekbones.
* Crowley from Literature/GoodOmens. But he's only technically evil, and given his position in the universe's moral spectrum, lacking a certain villainous appearance would be unbecoming. Not that it's stopped him being considered MrFanservice by many fans.
* Averted by Duck the Great Western Engine. He has high cheekbones, but he's in no way shape or form evil.
* Averted in Literature/GalaxyOfFear. Hoole has a gaunt face, and while he acts highly suspect in the first few books he's really . The BigBad, who is of the same species as Hoole, has a noticeably rounder, softer face.

* Any Toku villain played by Creator/MitsuoAndo, whose extremely pronounced cheekbones coupled with his ColdHam made him one of the go-to actors for Big Bads in HenshinHero shows produced by Creator/Company. His most notable roles include Professor Gill, Führer Geisel and the Black Cross Führer, all of which had him wear makeup that left his cheekbones pronounced.
* Series/DoctorWho:
** Creator/KateOMara as the Rani in old-school Who.
** The Weeping Angels, from the new series, have faces that look like traditional angel statues when they're relaxed, but their features become sharper and more savage when they attack.
** Missy, aka from the 2014 series, as played by Creator/MichelleGomez.
* Spike from Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer (although he makes a HeelFaceTurn). Most of the characters that Creator/JamesMarsters plays are villainous and his cheekbones are very, very sharp.
* Thomas from Series/DowntonAbbey.
* [=NBC=]'s Series/Hannibal:
** The title character is a cannibalistic SerialKiller played by Creator/MadsMikkelsen.
** Freddie Lounds, an amoral tabloid blogger, has some pretty severe cheekbones of her own.
* Any villainous character played by Creator/NoelFielding on Series/TheMightyBoosh, such as the Hitcher, Old Gregg and the Spirit of Jazz.
* Theon Greyjoy from Series/GameOfThrones, though he's not so much a villain than an insecure boy trying to please his father and eventually redeems himself.
* Series/TheLordOfTheRingsTheRingsOfPower: Adar has prominent cheekbones outlines by his long dark hair, and is the BigBad of Season One.
* Master blackmailer and all-around JerkWithAHeartOfJerk Charles Augustus Magnussen in Series/Sherlock has a face you could cut yourself slapping. He's played by Creator/LarsMikkelsen, so it's not surprising as VillainousCheekbones seem to run in the family.
* While not a straightforward villain, Death in Series/Supernatural is played by Julian Richings, whose cheekbones really help sell the idea that this is THE Grim Reaper.

* Music/DavidBowie put his high cheekbones, which were further accentuated by his bony frame at the time (due to all the cocaine), to good use for the sinister stage persona of the Thin White Duke in TheSeventies.
* Likewise, Music/Eminem lost a lot of weight to portray his SlasherMovie-inspired version of Slim Shady for his Relapse album, also exaggerating his naturally high cheekbones and serving to break him from the CuteAndPsycho PsychopathicManchild of the original version of the character. In kayfabe, mentioned in some of the songs on Relapse, Slim's extreme thinness was due to him taking drugs instead of eating.
* Averted with Agnetha Fältskog from Music/ABBA who despite having very prominent cheekbones, is very nice and kind.

* The Devil in Pinball/DevilsDare has these. As for the villainous part, well... he's the Devil commanding an army of minions to hinder you.

* Zed Provhezor from Roleplay/DinoAttackRPG, an unrepentant MadScientist.

* Creator/CirqueDuSoleil examples, often accomplished with the help of makeup or masks, include Fleur and some of the Nostalgic Old Birds in Theatre/Alegria and the Counselor and his equally wicked son in Theatre/KA. However, in Cirque prominent cheekbones are not exclusively for the evil, but sometimes used for Tricksters (Theatre/KOOZA) or similarly mysterious-but-good characters (the Great Chamberlain in Theatre/NouvelleExperience).
* Voldemort in Theatre/AVeryPotterMusical, via lots of makeup.
* Lady Macbeth (played by Kate Fleetwood) in the 2010 television version of Theatre/Macbeth.

* Franchise/LEGO has quite a few villainous characters with visible cheekbones in their designs:
** Lord Vladek, Karzon, and Dracus from Knights' Kingdom, all three of which are traitors to the kingdom.
** The Witch and Evil Knight from Toys/LEGOMinifigures, the former that does bad deeds to "make up" for all the good she does on the side, and the latter who has worked under numerous overlords (including Vladek).
** The butler and zombie chef from Monster Fighters, monsters that oppose the heroes.

* Klogg from VideoGame/TheNeverhood, the BigBad who imprisoned the god-like ruler and creator of the game world.
* VideoGame/Diablo, the main antagonist of the series and one of the three Prime Evils, sports a rather prominent pair of cheekbones.
* VideoGame/BioShock 2: Sofia Lamb. Not cartoonishly exaggerated, but hers are by far the most prominent of the entire cast. All of Rapture hangs off those cheekbones.
* The G-Man from the Videogame/HalfLife series. He is an enigmatic man in a black suit who follows you around and watches you from obscure vantage points, making finding him a kind of dark EasterEgg hunt. From what the player can puzzle out from his sparse interactions with him, and from what other characters say, it is likely that he is neither human nor benevolent.
* Count Veger from Jak 3 is very thin in general, so naturally he has very gaunt features.
* Cyrus, the BigBad of VideoGame/PokemonDiamondAndPearl, has prominent cheekbones. They're one of his most noticeable features and emphasize his gaunt appearance.
* When the evil sorceress Mizrabel from VideoGame/CastleOfIllusion gets her beauty back, she has cheekbones like knife blades.
* VideoGame/StarWarsTheOldRepublic has this as a facial option for most species, and gets a lot of mileage out of it in terms of Imperial soldiers and politicians; this is, of course, a direct reference to Tarkin, above.
* Humanoid vampires in VideoGame/TheElderScrollsIVOblivion default to having high cheekbones when they're starving and their monstrous nature is especially clear since it uses a pre-set face for them. This is especially clear with the Dark Brotherhood's Vicente Valtieri, who always looks that way.
* In VideoGame/Overwatch, Moira and (to a lesser extent) Reaper both have prominent cheekbones, and are both ObviouslyEvil terrorists.
* Though he is the protagonist of the series, VideoGame/Hitmans Agent 47 has very noticeable cheekbones, befitting his ominous appearance and status as a ruthless killer-for-hire.
* In Chapter 2 of VideoGame/Deltarune, Spamton's design includes exaggeratedly high and prominent cheekbones that fit his nature as an unhinged manipulator. This is especially visible during his attacks in his fight and on his shop sprite, both of which exaggerate the cheekbones even more and make them visibly pointy. Strangely, .
* from VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTwilightPrincess kind of seems like a villain at first but ultimately is a subversion as despite her Tsundere qualities, she's a really sweet person.

* Webcomic/CursedPrincessClub: Princess Gwendolyn of the Pastel Kingdom has rigid, jutting cheekbones (which later chapters extend to the whole area around her eye sockets following ArtEvolution) that are one of many facial features that make her look so sinister. However, she's actually much nicer than her freaky appearance would imply (not that her reluctant fiancé Frederick initially knows that, given he assumes based partly on her cheekbones that she has a constant DeathGlare).
* Webcomic/EveryButtonHurtsTheOtherGuy : N. Buffalo and Vodka Gorbalski are both part of world conquest syndicate the Evil Eye and both have conspicuous, jutting cheekbones.
* Webcomic/ElGoonishShive: Dex has huge cheekbones, sunken eyes and BigOlEyebrows. He hasn't been explicitly confirmed as a villain but even if he isn't he seems to be being controlled by one.
* Webcomic/Misfile: Xaphrael has gaunt cheeks, eye-scar, spiky antennae-like hair, and a range of facial expressions that range from cold disdain to amused detachment. He hasn't actually been "revealed" as a villain yet, but c'mon... just LOOK at him!
* Webcomic/Outsider: While she's not really a villain per se, Stillstorm's sharp, angular cheeks are a visual cue to her aggressive, bellicose and tactless nature.

* Creator/NeilPatrickHarris as Dr. Horrible in WebVideo/DoctorHorriblesSingAlongBlog. In the commentary, during a GlovedFistOfDoom closeup, Creator/JossWhedon even notes, "But then underneath this light, I was like, 'Ooh, look at Neil's cheekbones...'"
* Averted and subverted hard with [=YouTuber=] and model Snow Dollkinson, she has not only the super prominent cheekbones and sunken cheeks but also the classic villainous facial features (as one commenter put it, she looks like the White Witch from The Chronicles Of Narnia), but is a very sweet person who makes positive, encouraging content.

* Megatron from WesternAnimation/TransformersAnimated seems to have this going on. They even manage to stand out in a series where the good guys are also robots so have very angular features.
* Norman Osborn in WesternAnimation/TheSpectacularSpiderMan. Tombstone also has them, in keeping with his generally cadaverous face, and making the contrast with his extremely bulky body more pronounced.
* WesternAnimation/BatmanTheAnimatedSeries:
** The Joker, as in virtually all of his appearances. The fact that he manages to have visible cheekbones even when the flesh of his cheeks has been stretched into his trademark smile is quite impressive.
** Mr. Freeze as well, especially after the show's revamp.
* WesternAnimation/BigHero6TheSeries: Obake, BigBad of Season 1, has some noticeable cheekbones on his gaunt face.
* During his introduction, Jeremiah Surd of WesternAnimation/JonnyQuestTheRealAdventures had ridiculously exaggerated cheekbones that made him look almost goofy. During later appearances, he became gradually more realistic (and more menacing).
* WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender:
** Fire Lord Ozai has some impressive cheekbones. Both his children have high cheekbones, but they're the somewhat softer kind of classical prettiness, while Ozai's are much sharper.
** Amon in the SequelSeries WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfKorra wears a mask that has these carved into it. And Tarrlok, Unalaq, Zaheer, Ming-Hua, and Ghazan all come by the trait naturally.
* Oroku Saki in WesternAnimation/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles2003.
* The Duke from WesternAnimation/Gawayn
* Thrawn from WesternAnimation/StarWarsRebels
* Perhaps unsurprisingly for a Disney villain, Colonel Staquait from WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfTarzan could probably put someone's eye out with his cheekbones.
* Hordak from the 2018 reboot of WesternAnimation/SheRaAndThePrincessesOfPower has an angular face and pronounced cheekbones. [[spoiler:So does his progenitor, Horde Prime.]]
* Red Death, the skeletal supervillain from WesternAnimation/TheVentureBros, has very prominent cheekbones.
* Scorpia from the 1980s version of WesternAnimation/SheRaPrincessOfPower has very prominent cheekbones. Her reboot self who TookALevelInKindness, on the other hand, not nearly as much.
